THE NAZ

Winners of “The Best Bangladeshi Restaurant” Award Asian Restaurant Awards 2018 Asian Restaurant Awards 2018 On Monday 5th March 2018, the Asian Catering Federation (ACF) hosted their first Asian Restaurant Awards. The winners of the inaugural Asian Restaurant Awards were announced at a glittering awards ceremony, held at the Manchester Hilton. The evening, attended by over 500 leading restaurateurs, chefs, food journalists and VIP guests, was hosted by BBC TV news anchor, Barbita Sharma.

The Naz, in Monton, scooped the presitgious title of “Best Bangladeshi Restaurant”. The Asian Restaurant Awards were organised by the Asian Catering Federation (ACF) which represents the nation’s 30,000 Asian and Oriental restaurants. In his keynote speech, ACF Chairman Yawar Khan declared the Asian Restaurants Awards a great success and promised to return next year with “an even bigger and better event.” In his programme notes, Asian Restaurant Awards judge, George Shaw, commented: “Over 25 years ago culinary pioneer Madha Jaffrey told me that too many Asian restaurant owners were in a race to the bottom, under cutting each other’s prices, with enormous menus of poorly cooked dishes. Tonight, we celebrate the achievements of those in a race to the top.” Manchester's Deputy Mayor congratulated Mr Mannan, owner of The Naz, and his family on his success (see below).

GeorGia’s Children of the World:

A charity on your doorstep helping children who have fallen through the cracks of society G-Festival 18, set for Sunday 6th May, is another great opportunity for the local community to get together and make a difference for disadvantaged kids both at home and around the world! We’ve had another busy and successful year for Georgia’s Children. At home, we have delivered over 400 free school uniforms to underprivileged kids, and assisted Lifecentre Salford (Georgia’s House 5) with breakfast and free holiday lunches. We provided weekly physio sessions to local girl Heidi Lou who suffers from Cerebral Palsy, but now has learned to sit independently! (So proud of what she has achieved).

In Cambodia we’ve built three wells in villages that had no drinking water, another classroom at our remote village school, Georgia's House 6, giving education and hope to 150 children who,

3 years ago, had no school. We’ve also completed 'Carole's Classroom', a kindergarten in memory of Georgia's mum, and saved lives by providing medicine and a tuk-tuk to get sick children to hospital. In Romania we’ve continued delivering food and clothing, whilst developing education at Georgia's House 4 – it gets to -25 degrees in the winter, and without education there’s no way out. G-Festival is a celebration of life, set up in memory of Georgia Murray, but now a community festival serving children of the world in the name of ALL those we have lost. ROTARY IN WORSLEY REACHING FOR THE STARS: COME AND JOIN OUR ‘SATELLITE’

Worsley Rotary Club has served our community for many years and is best known for its Santa Sleigh collections raising funds for local good causes. But Rotary in Worsley does much more than that including its annual Dragons Den Event, Sponsored Sleepout for the Homeless, the Rotary Ride Static Bike Challenge for Prostate Cancer, the ‘Lets Hear Salford’ project and many more activities. For 2018, in addition to our weekly Worsley Rotary Club meetings with dinner at Worsley Novotel, we have launched a new group ‘Worsley Bridgewater Satellite’, set up as an opportunity for people from all walks of life who would like to get involved and ‘give something back’ and make a real difference, but have limited time available. Our ‘Satellite’ meets only twice a month at The John Gilbert pub for an hour to discuss projects it is working on to help our community, and is planning a Charity Celebrity Football Match and Fun Day in June at AFC Monton in support of the 2 mm’s Youth Club in Winton.

Our ‘Satellite Rotary Group’ currently has 10 members; 5 ladies and 5 men from all walks of life, committed to making a difference and having fun, learning from our Worsley Rotarians with many years experience supporting our community. We welcome interest from anyone living locally who can spare just 2-3 hours per month and would like to join Rotary, meet like minded people in an informal setting, organise projects and make a positive local impact. To find out more, or come along to one of our meetings, please contact: Tony Clayson, Membership Secretary, Worsley Rotary. Email : worsleybridgewater@gmail.com Worsley Bridgewater Satellite

WELCOME T O MILLER METCALFE PREST IGE Miller Metcalfe has grown to become a multi branch enterprise covering the whole of the North-West, whilst maintaining the values and personal service our clients have come to expect. Handling an exclusive property portfolio on behalf of a broad client base, our principle activities involve the sale, let and purchase of luxury residential homes across the North West.

We had our property listed with two other agents before

instructing Miller Metcalfe. What a difference! Their marketing was streets ahead and the customer service was second to

none. Professional, helpful and supportive throughout the sale. They are a great team and we highly recommend them. - Mrs M - July 2017

MEET OUR TEAM Since joining Miller Metcalfe in 2014 I have worked as a Business Development Manager and then moved onto Branch Manager of our Culcheth branch. I have recently taken the position of Branch Manager in Worsley and I am looking forward to the challenge ahead. I started my career as a Negotiator in October 2001, where I quickly progressed to a Senior Negotiator, Valuer and Branch Manager. I first joined Miller Metcalfe as a Business Development Manager in 2014, working in the Walkden and Worsley areas, where I have gained great local knowledge and had great success over the last 16 years. I live locally with my husband and two children, where we enjoy day trips, country walks and holidays together.

Zoe Drayton Branch Manager

At the forefront of my heart is our local property market, having grown up in this area I have witnessed first-hand the way it’s continually changing, improving and moving forward whilst still retaining local values and a strong community feel which tie us all together. I’m passionate about doing a good job, local knowledge comes naturally and I feel I’m perfectly placed to help you with your property needs. From a simple what’s your home worth, to yield on an investment property, let me help you cover the bases and get you where you want be, ready for your next move.

James Murphy

I believe that property is about people, their livelihoods and their future, it shouldn’t just be a transaction, let someone experienced who cares about our local area and your needs help you.

Lettings Manager

I qualified as a Chef in 1981, later going on to train as a Baker with Slattery’s and ended up running a restaurant until 1993. I then moved onto becoming a Mental Health Nurse, qualifying in 1997 and enjoyed a 14 year career, to which I unfortunately had to give up due to illness. I joined Miller Metcalfe in 2012 as a part-time viewer for the Worsley branch, working with various branches within the company over the five years I have been here. I have had the pleasure of showing a variety of houses within different price brackets. I have worked in various branches throughout my time at Miller Metcalfe, majority of the time has been spent in Worsley. I currently live in Walkden.

RESTORING CAR PAINTWORK TO SHOWROOM CONDITION

Small bumps and scrapes - minor accidents can happen to anyone at anytime. ChipsAway Worsley provide a cost effective alternative to the traditional body shop service and this is how we do it...

1

A typical ChipsAway repair: a bumper scuffed against a wall reversing into a parking space causing deep scratches through the paintwork and the bumper plastic.

2

The panel is prepped to ensure complete cleanliness and the damaged area is rubbed with an abrasive to remove any protruding rough spots and minor scratching. The rear wheel is covered to ensure it is protected from any dust or mess.

3

a Specialty Lacquer Blender. The repair is then dried for 45 minutes using infra red lamps.

6

Once the area has cooled down the lacquer is then cut using a fine abrasive. This removes any texture or imperfections in the lacquer and creates a flat surface. The repair is the polished and buffed to a brilliant, smooth shine. All masking is then removed.

7

The surrounding panels are then cleaned. Your flawless ChipsAway repair is then revealed!

The deep scratches are filled and rubbed flat. A primer is then applied to seal the damage, then rubbed down again until completely smooth. The bumper is prepped again before paint is applied and the work area masked off to prevent overspray.

4

Paint is then applied in light coats. Every coat will span slightly wider than the previous to ensure perfect paint colour blend.

Local History

Eccles & District History Society

Women's Suffrage Demonstration It is well known that this year we celebrate women obtaining the vote in this country. However, the struggle had gone in for many years previously and would continue for many years until full suffrage was achieved. Our area was widely involved in the women’s suffrage movement. The 1832 Reform Act had given more people the access to the vote, but was still limited to men. In 1867 a Society was formed known as the Manchester Branch of the National Society for Women’s Suffrage. Their aim was to amend the Reform Act with the substitution of the word ’man’ to the word ‘person’. One of the most well- known suffragettes is Emmeline Pankhurst, daughter of a Salford cotton manufacturer, who was born at Weaste. With her daughter Christabel she formed the Women’s Social and Political Union in 1903. Their first militant action was during a Liberal rally at Manchester’s Free Trade Hall in October 1905 when they interrupted the speaker and ended up in Strangeways Prison. Supported by the Independent Labour Party they held many propaganda meetings in a number of Lancashire towns. During the years 1907-8 there was an immense expansion of all the organisations connected with the suffrage movement. In 1909, for the many offences of Breach of the Peace, Disorderly Conduct, stone throwing etc., there were 264 arrests and 165 imprisonments. The treatment meted out by the police and prison authorities was terrible. One of the victims was Nellie Hall, a daughter of Leonard Hall, the editor of the Eccles Advertiser and District Record. She was an organiser of the Women’s Social and Political Union (W.S.P.U.) and was arrested along with her flat mate Grace Roe, her mother Pattie and her sister Emmeline (named after Emmeline Pankhurst). Twenty two pieces of tube and gunpowder were found in the flat. Nellie, only 21 at the time, along with the others went on hunger strike. They were 26 ON OUR DOORSTEP

The Suffragettes

refused bail, force-fed and drugged. Nellie’s punishment was three months. In the 1910 election the Eccles and Patricroft Journal informs us that the North of England Society for Women’s Suffrage was working on polling day in Eccles, Swinton and Urmston. The picture above shows the demonstration in Eccles. One of the women carries a fake bomb, one holds a ‘Votes for Women’ placard and another holds up a ballot box. This picture shows six Worsley suffragettes. The tall lady at the back is the wife of Alderman WM Rogerson, Chairman of Worsley UDC three times in the 1930s. Unfortunately the image isn’t dated. All the information for the article above is available at Salford Local History Library. The top image above will feature on the leaflet from Eccles & District History Society for their 2018-19 programme. There are two lectures still to take place on the current programme: Wednesday 11th April: Tony Wright – Liverpool to Manchester Monorail Wednesday 9th May: Eccles As It Was - A Slide Presentation by Chris Carson. Please note: this meeting will be preceded by the Society's Annual General Meeting. Non-members are welcome to attend.

Meetings are held at 7.30pm at Alexandra House, 395 Liverpool Road, Eccles. For more information please visit our website www.edhs.btck.co.uk or email eccleshistory@yahoo.co.uk

Local Charities

Demand for Food Parcels Continues to Rise Salford Foodbank experienced another rise in the amount of emergency parcels that it gave out in 2017 and is appealing for more donations to help those who are struggling to put food on their table. Last year the foodbank gave out 5,045 three-day emergency food parcels of which 2,043 were for children. People attending any of the three foodbank centres in Salford are identified by local frontline care professionals, such as health visitors or social workers, and given a voucher to exchange for their food. Salford Foodbank manager Mark Whittington says: ‘2017 was a very busy year for us and we are expecting that this will continue throughout 2018. With over 99% of food donated by the public we are overwhelmed by peoples generosity but

We would be very grateful if local residents could consider buying an item or two to help support local people in crisis.’ Donations can be left at the permanent collection points, at any time they are open, at: Sainsbury’s on Regent Road Morrisons in Eccles, or Tesco, Salford Precinct Alternatively, donations can be taken to: Salford Central Foodbank, Christ Central, Mocha Parade but please call 0161 637 4500 to confirm when you will be donating.

Spring Plotting Plotting on the Macmillan Plot... Finally, the last of the electrical work has been done at Tindall street so we now have lights in the toilet which turn on and off automatically - what a bonus! The solar panels are now installed and generating power, but the company which installed the units went into liquidation without registering the installation with Eon, so we are generating electricity but not being paid. This is being rectified ASAP! Our ‘forced’ rhubarb has done really well, I think it has benefitted from all the rain and when the main crop is in full swing, we’ll keep up a watering regime since we now have 8 water butts. We gave the bed a feed of chicken manure in February too. The bird feeders have been very well used through the winter and we’re hoping the birds will stay and entertain us in summer. We found a good way to keep the squirrels off the feeders is to cut the top 6-8 inches off a plastic bottle, discard the lid and thread the cut length over the wire that the feeder is hung on. The plastic collar will rotate if a squirrel stands on it and the pest will end up on the ground. I’m sure they will find a way to overcome this but, it’s fun to see them looking puzzled for the moment. This idea is a good bit of ‘green’ thinking and you can use the remainder of the bottle as a miniature cloche for your plants and seedings.

greenhouse so they are growing on before they go into their beds. This helps to establish their roots before they face the open air. Don’t forget that some days may be feeling warmer and you need to keep on checking for slugs and snails, it’s amazing how they turn up from nowhere! Finally, are your potatoes ‘chitting’ well? They will need to be ready for planting by the middle/end of April, at the latest.

Around the City...

POORLOTS, IRLAM: The public enquiry into the

proposed extension of the allotments is now fixed and we should have a decision before the end of this year, we hope. It has taken a long time to get this far! This site has had a bad time with the rain the Federation is talking to the Council about how to overcome the waterlogging - raised beds may be a partial solution.

MOSSFIELD: This site has also suffered from waterlogging and advice from Liege University is being considered to see what can be done to improve conditions.

NEWHALL AVENUE: The extension plans have gone

awry with the Council transferring the adjoining land, which is the access area to the plot, to City West and they do not want to give access to the allotment over their land. Where this will all end up, who knows?

CLEAVLEYS: Have had a major ‘makeover’ of their

fencing and it’s hoped that this will have a beneficial affect on the whole site.

BLACKLEACH: Still very much “work-in-progress”.

If you have started peas or broad beans in pots or trays, you can transplant them now if your ground is not too wet, but keep an eye out for late frost. Cabbages can also go out now, but don’t forget it’s always better to delay until March has passed, unless we have an exceptionally warm, dry spell.

Discussions, ideas and financing are all ongoing and the hope is that decisions will be made this summer. If you are interested in a plot, please contact the SAF secretary carolyn.collins@me.com.

Competition!

WIN HAND CRAFTED GIN OR AN AFTERNOON TEA GIN CRUISE

Two great prizes to be won: A 70cl bottle of Worsley Gin and laser etched Worsley Glass, or Afternoon Tea Gin Cruise for Two on Sunday 8th July.

INSPIRED BY NATURE. LED BY SCIENCE. CRAFTED BY HAND. These are the principles which have led to the creation of a new luxury spirit from Manchester – Worsley Gin. A closely guarded secret blend of botanicals sets this apart from its other London Dry counterparts, where the botanicals have been selected for their molecular structure for ultimate compatibility. Some of the botanicals are foraged locally in Worsley making this a truly special product for Salford and the North West. Worsley Gin is distilled using a unique, small batch, single distillation process which creates an incredible flavour journey, making it a must buy for the true connoisseur. Purchase via our website or enjoy a Gin and Tonic at a number of local bars and restaurants in the village and in Manchester. Join one of our special Afternoon Tea Gin Cruises along the Bridgewater Canal where you can enjoy champagne, delicious food and of course Worsley Gin! Details are available at www.worsleygin.co.uk

For your chance to win one of these fantastic prizes, email your NAME, ADDRESS & TEL. NO to:-
