Built in the late 16th century, the historic hall has witnessed centuries of change, serving as a family home, hospital and, today, a hub for community life. Restored

DO YOU GET THE SUNDAY SCARIES? What are the ‘Sunday Scaries’?

The Sunday Scaries are that feeling of dread or anxiety that can be experienced before beginning the working week. It’s important to realise that these feelings can be an alarm bell, telling you that something isn't right.

What causes it?

It can be a mismatch between someone’s own values and their work setting. Without realising it, they might feel the need to ‘wear a mask’ at work, and it soon grows heavy. Other causes can include: unrealistic workloads or expectations; negative encounters with co-workers or managers; or the slow realisation that a role no longer feels satisfying.

Effective ways to reduce anxiety on a Sunday

Reflecting on the past week and planning out the next one can be so helpful. Reflection and planning is best done on Friday afternoons or at the end of your week.

Physiologically, the nervous system shifts from the parasympathetic ‘rest and digest’ state to the sympathetic ‘fight or flight’ state: the body prepares for a non-existent battle.

When the Sunday Scaries begin to affect your health

According to recent data from Spa Seekers*, the average person loses 2.5 hours of their Sunday to work-related anxiety. Over months and years, constant stress & anxiety can take a toll on someone’s mental and physical health. It’s important that we recognise the signs, get help and/or take action.

Are the Sunday Scaries normal or useful?

Navigating the Probate Process: Avoiding Common Problems Dealing with a loved one’s estate is stressful enough, but when probate doesn’t go smoothly, it can turn into a nightmare. Many people assume probate is a simple process, but unexpected complications can cause delays, disputes and financial losses. Here are some of the most common probate nightmares and how to avoid them.

Making Mental Health Colourful Hi! I’m Georgia, a 20-year-old artist and the founder of Minds in the Matrix, a small creative business based here in Walkden.

I started Minds in the Matrix after struggling to find where I fitted into the traditional working world. Being neurodivergent myself, I wanted to create something that turned the experiences that can make us feel different, misunderstood or alone into colourful art that actually makes people feel seen.

I draw every design myself and create stickers, prints, tote bags, clothing and other colourful pieces centred around mental health, neurodivergence and all the thoughts our brains don’t always say out loud. My aim is simple: to make mental health and neurodivergence feel

What started from my bedroom has grown into something I never imagined.

The loveliest part though, is hearing from customers who tell me a design made them feel understood or a little less alone.

Hugh Stowell: Salford’s Cursing Clergyman He opposed education unless it was Anglican indoctrination. He was responsible for the building of Hulme Street and Hope Street schools but opposed secular education, stating it was better for learning to be ‘crushed’ than not Christianised.

As you leave the M602 at Regent Road, there rises a steeple, the only remainder of the Stowell Memorial Church built in memory of Hugh Stowell, a testament to the influence this Victorian vicar had on Salford.

An Oxford-educated Manxman, he was a leading evangelical who came to Salford in 1825 as a temporary post at St Stephen’s. So popular was he that in 1827 his parishioners built Christ Church in Acton Square, reputedly the most beautiful in Salford.

Stowell worked his way up the Anglican hierarchy, becoming chaplain to the Bishop and rural dean of Salford, dedicated to converting working people through open air preaching, industrial missions, and new churches such as St Batholomew’s and St Paul’s.

He also employed what he called his ‘holy machinery’, providing welfare and clothing clubs, visiting the sick, campaigning for temperance and building schools.

On the face of it, a progressive. But there was a darker side to Stowell’s work summed up by novelist Elizabeth Gaskell when attending a religious event: “Mr Stowell was there and all the cursing Evangelicals”.

Far from wanting to liberate the working class, Stowell demonised them unless they were subservient.

His publication Protestant Witness carried stories of conversions of workers who proclaimed they were better servants to their masters as a result.

30 ON OUR DOORSTEP

Most insidious was his leadership of the anti-Catholic movement. Between 1841 and 1851 Irish Catholics rose to become 8.3% of Salford’s population.

Catholicism seemed to be on the up causing Stowell anxiety - and what a bitter irony that the new Catholic cathedral was in his Salford.

Catholics were accused of obeying a foreign power (the Pope), taking jobs by undercutting wages, infiltrating the police, and there were lurid tales spread about what priests did in the confession box.

Stowell instituted the ‘Protestant Watchmen’ to follow priests and nuns, make sure young people were kept away from Catholic churches, and distributed anti-Catholic pamphlets.

Stowell was a renowned orator - although the Salford Weekly News reported that his speeches were “vague, frothy and sounding quite in the wind-bag style”. He engaged in fiery rhetoric which some say provoked rioting and violence. But most of all, it sought to drive a wedge between protestant and catholic workers. A cursing clergyman indeed!

Stowell married Susannah Ashworth, daughter of a Salford barrister, in 1828.

They had nine children.

Stowell died in 1865 and was buried at Christ Church. His funeral attracted large crowds and 200 fellow clergy.

His son, Thomas Alfred, succeeded him as vicar.
