Damhouse Community Fundraising Events Damhouse, a Grade II* listed building in the heart of Astley, is lovingly maintained by Morts Astley Heritage Trust, a small local charity. THE 10-MINUTE DAILY RESET Small habits that improve sleep, energy and focus In a world that often demands more time than we have, the idea of improving your health in just 10 minutes a day may seem unrealistic. Yet increasingly, experts are pointing to the power of small, consistent habits and simple actions that, over time, can have a meaningful impact on how we feel.

The concept of a ‘daily reset’ is straightforward short, manageable interventions that help restore balance, both physically and mentally, without requiring a complete overhaul of your routine.

In other words, rather than committing to an hour at the gym or a strict wellness regime, it’s about finding moments within the day that allow you to pause, reset and refocus.

The Move Groove For many, that begins with movement. A 10-minute walk, particularly outdoors, can boost circulation, increase energy levels and provide a valuable break from screens.

Exposure to natural light also plays a role in regulating sleep patterns, helping to align the body’s internal clock.

Walking one of the simplest and most accessible forms of exercise, yet often one of the most effective.

Easy Breathe Breathing exercises are another powerful tool.

Slowing the breath, even for just a few minutes, can activate the body’s relaxation response, reducing stress and improving concentration. In a fast-paced environment where mental overload is common, this kind of reset can be surprisingly impactful.

The Wonder of Water Hydration is often overlooked, but it is fundamental.

Even mild dehydration can lead to fatigue, headaches and reduced focus. Starting the day with a glass of water, or simply making a conscious effort to drink more regularly, can have an immediate effect on how alert and energised you feel.

Eat and Repeat Nutrition also plays a supporting role. A quick reset might include a healthy snack - something balanced that stabilises energy levels rather than causing spikes and crashes - a handful of nuts or a natural yoghurt for example. It doesn’t need to be complicated; it simply needs to be intentional.

The Rest Test Sleep preparation is equally important. A short evening routine such as reducing screen time, dimming lights, or stepping away from devices, can signal to the body that it’s time to wind down. Even ten minutes of calm before bed can improve both the quality and consistency of sleep.

There is also a mental component to the reset. Taking a few moments to step back, reflect or simply sit without distraction can help clear the mind and improve focus. In a culture of constant stimulation, that pause is often missing, and increasingly valuable.

The key to all of this is consistency rather than intensity. Ten minutes, repeated daily, is far more effective than occasional bursts of effort. Over time, these small habits begin to compound, creating noticeable improvements in your energy, mood and overall wellbeing.

Probate vs No Probate: What Difference Does a Will Really Make?

Many people assume that having a Will means they can avoid probate, but that’s not always the case.

While a Will provides clear instructions on who should inherit, probate may still be required to legally administer the estate. Let’s compare two scenarios one with a Will and one without - to highlight the key differences.

Scenario 1: There Is a Will

Scenario 2: There Is No Will (Intestacy)

John passes away, leaving a valid Will naming his daughter Sarah as the executor and sole beneficiary.

Emma passes away without a Will, leaving a husband, two children, and a property in her sole name.

What Happens Next?

1. Sarah applies for a Grant of Probate. This gives her legal authority to collect assets, settle debts, and distribute the estate.

What Happens Next?

1. Her husband applies for Letters of Administration.

Since there’s no Will, intestacy laws decide who inherits. The family cannot access Emma’s accounts or sell property until this is granted.

2. Her estate is divided according to intestacy rules.

In this case, her husband inherits the first £322,000 of her estate and half of the remaining assets, while the children share the rest.

3. Potential disputes arise. If Emma’s family assumed everything would go to her husband, they may be surprised that the children automatically inherit a share.

2. John’s property and bank accounts can be accessed. Some banks may release funds without probate if the amounts are small, but most require official confirmation.

WALKDEN YARD The Lancashire Central Coalfield Workshops Located close to the Ellesmere Colliery, the Walkden Yard ultimately became the NCB Central Workshops for Lancashire. From here the workshops served the Bridgewater Trustees’ collieries, providing engineering support as well as maintaining the numerous railway locomotives and the many hundreds of wagons that the company owned.

Opened in 1878, Walkden Yard transferred to the National Coal Board upon the 1946 nationalisation after the Second World War, and its importance grew as it served the other Lancashire collieries too.

At Walkden there was a machine shop, joiners’ shop, electricians’ shop, paint shop, tinsmiths’, locomotive repair shop, wagon sheds and wagon machine shop. The yard itself employed hundreds of men and boys but was closed in 1986 with the decline of the Lancashire coalfield.

A housing estate now sits atop the site of the Walkden Yard and it is hard to remember that the site once serviced the many locomotives that belonged to the NCB, or that the Coal Board and its predecessors operated many locomotives over their own lines as well as the railway company ones and that a huge industry was maintained at Walkden Yard, repairing locomotives and rolling stock.
