After a well-needed break from eating, partying and spending over the festive period, the coming months bring a steady stream of occasions to celebrate again.
It’s time to make reservations and search for those special gifts for your loved ones with Valentine’s and Mother’s Day (Sun 15th March) coming up. For some cultural fun, head into Manchester for Chinese New Year, 14-15th February, for the biggest celebrations yet with market stalls spread across the city. Plus, look forward to the long Easter weekend which comes earlier this year, 3rd-6th April.
As we head into spring, look out for the early blooms, enjoy the increasing hours of daylight and warmer weather. It’s time to get outdoors more, and to start on those spring cleaning, gardening and home improvement projects!
British Summer Time begins 29th March; remember to set clocks forward at 1am!

Charity resident, Malcolm
Could you walk ‘A Mile In Their Shoes’?
Did you know people who are street homeless
walk an average of 10 to 15 miles each day?
Homelessness charity Emmaus Salford is calling on individuals, businesses, colleges and other organisations to put yourself in their shoes and fundraise by walking 28 miles in 28 days this February.
Over the past 11 years, Emmaus Salford has been a lifeline for people forced into homelessnessproviding a home, support and work opportunities that have helped more than 775 people move on.
Charity resident, Malcolm, will be one of the people walking a mile each day in February. He also plans to join the community’s Walk For Good fundraiser on 17th February.
“I had very little food, very little money and I had to walk miles to get to an appointment. You’re cold, you’re wet, you’re miserable and the next thing you’ve got to get up and do it all again.”
“I’m walking for good in February to show solidarity with homeless people. I’m doing it to try to raise money and raise awareness.”
The 28 miles is significant for Emmaus Salford because the lease on the charity’s Langworthy home expires in February 2028 and it is now in desperate need of funding to either relocate or cover vital refurbishment work.

Aremarkable fact is that in Manchester in the 1880s there were more vegetarian restaurants than there were in the 1970s. One reason was because the founders of the modern vegetarian movement came from Salford.
In 1809, in the pretty Swedenborgian Christ Church chapel sandwiched between King Street and Queen Street, in the Greengate area of Salford, a bull-necked, powerfully built man made his way to the pulpit.
His text was Genesis 9.3: "And God said, Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you: even as the green herb I have given you all things, but the flesh, with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat." Thus the Rev William Cowherd began a sermon which instructed his congregation to abstain from meat.
The sermon had both immediate and lasting effects. It precipitated a split between Cowherd and the Swedenborgian leadership who regarded vegetarianism as "a pernicious doctrine".
By the summer Cowherd had established the Bible Christian Church which consisted of his own and three other congregations. It was the first modern institution established to advocate vegetarianism.
Though small, its influence grew and a generation later its members formed the nucleus of the Vegetarian Society both in Britain and America.
Vegetarianism’s Greengate Roots
Cowherd died in 1816 and his successor as pastor was Joseph Brotherton who became Salford's first MP. A mill-owner, he was able to retire in 1819 at the age of 36. He devoted himself to his church and to public service. Brotherton was one of a tightlyknit group - linked by religion and family tieswhich took over the reins of power in Salford.
Brotherton put the church on a stable footing and campaigned for vegetarianism - chairing the meeting in Bridge Street, Manchester, which in 1847 set up the Vegetarian Society.
The church’s members were radical and persecuted by the authorities. America was seen as a land of freedom. In 1817, a group of migrants led by two ordained ministers of the Bible Christian ChurchJames Clarke and William Metcalfe (1788-1862) - left for America.
Metcalfe earned a living from teaching and devoted his spare time to journalism and vegetarian propaganda. In 1850 an American Vegetarian Convention was called with Metcalfe as its president for its inaugural meeting. The convention established the Vegetarian Society of America. Metcalfe became the society's correspondence secretary and in 1851 he became editor of the American Vegetarian and Health Journal.
In 1859 he was elected president of the Vegetarian Society of America on the death of its first president, Dr William Alcott. Metcalfe himself died in 1862.
The influence of the Bible Christinas is commemorated in the new Greengate Park laid out on the site of the original chapel.

How to put your HEALTH FIRST
by Rob Bullock
Looking after yourself by prioritising your physical and mental wellbeing is a way to stay happy and healthy. Whether it is eating healthily and sleeping well, getting more exercise or managing your work/life balance, there are plenty of ways you can begin to put your health first to live your best life.
Diet
Eating a varied, nutritious diet high in fruit and vegetables and lean sources of protein, whilst reducing salt and sugar intake can make a vast difference to your physical and mental health. Drinking less alcohol and caffeine and more water can improve bodily functions and brain activity, reduce your risk of suffering a heart attack or a stroke and just make you feel better about yourself.
Exercise
Daily activity and getting into good habits and routines is good for your health. It can help you reduce your weight and lower your risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and certain cancers. Exercise helps you sleep better and gives you more energy, and it improves how you feel about yourself. You can do different types of exercise; perhaps consider joining a gym or hiring a personal trainer but it could also include going dancing with people you love, swimming with friends, or even getting out for a walk every day. And, by setting small reasonable exercise goals they are likely to be achievable.
Sleep
Getting a good night’s sleep of around 7 to 9 hours is the way your body recharges itself, physically and mentally, makes you feel better about yourself and strengthens your immune system.
Health Screening
You can prevent certain health conditions by regular health screening. Early detection of certain diseases can often lead to more effective treatment and full recovery. Health screening can also prevent conditions from becoming serious by allowing you to make early, informed decisions about things like diet, exercise and your lifestyle.
Reduce stress and improve work/life balance
Modern life can be stressful, with many of us focusing on those around us, our jobs, the world around us, and the expectations of others. Simply reducing our screen time is a good place to start because it can cause stress, and we should prioritise ourselves and schedule in ‘me time’ to begin to improve our mental health. By practising mindfulness and learning breathing exercises, we can immediately begin to bring calm into our lives. Taking up a new hobby or pastime, or making time to spend with family and friends can also take us out of ourselves and make us feel more self-assured and confident.
The best lifestyle changes are small, gradual ones, often having a more lasting effect than unachievable dramatic changes. When starting to exercise, set small goals, when making dietary changes, allow yourself treats, and when trying something new, don’t be afraid to take time to learn.
Introducing The Care Compass Circle
Over the past year, we have listened closely to the questions and concerns so many of you have shared with us. Time and time again, the same themes arise, particularly for those just beginning their care journey, whether for themselves or a loved one. When you don’t know where to start or who to ask, it can feel confusing, isolating and overwhelming.
At Home Instead Salford & Worsley, we often talk about our “Kathy and Ken” - the people who are right on the cusp of needing support, unsure of the next step and looking for guidance. We meet many Kathys and Kens every month. While we may not be the right care provider for everyone, we can always offer reassurance, clear information and trusted signposting.
Some of the most common questions we hear include:
n What are Direct Payments and how do they work?
n Can I complete a Lasting Power of Attorney myself, or do I need a solicitor?
n What is the difference between live-in care and residential care?
n What makes Home Instead Salford an outstanding care provider?
n Where do I turn when a loved one has just been diagnosed with dementia?
These are important questions, and people deserve accessible, trustworthy answers.
That’s why, in 2026, we are taking a new step forward by bringing information and support directly into our community. Our Compass of Care evenings are designed to share knowledge, offer reassurance and create a welcoming space where anyone can ask questions without judgement or pressure.
We are delighted to announce our first two Compass of Care Community Information Evenings:
These evenings will run on the first Tuesday of every month, each focusing on a dedicated topic, with guest speakers, practical guidance and plenty of time for questions, coffee, cake and conversation. Our hope is that confidence will grow, friendships will form and the journey into care will feel far less daunting.
We warmly invite you to tell us which topics matter most to you - whether that’s funding, dementia support, navigating the NHS, understanding care options or anything else you’d like clarity on.
Our message remains the same; please don’t wait until Kathy and Ken reach crisis point. Starting the journey early, with the right information and support, can ease the panic and uncertainty that so many families experience.
Visit our Facebook page for further information: www.facebook.com/homeinsteadsalford
We’re really looking forward to welcoming you and growing this supportive community together.
Why Early in the Year is the Perfect Time to Review Your Will
The start of a new year, or the early months that follow, is a natural moment to take stock of finances, plans and future goals. It is also an ideal time to review your Will, even if you already have one in place.
Many people assume that once a Will has been signed, it can be forgotten about. In reality, a Will should be reviewed regularly to ensure it still reflects your wishes and personal circumstances. Life changes quickly, and even small changes can have a significant impact on how your estate is dealt with.
Marriage, divorce, or entering a civil partnership can affect the validity or interpretation of a Will. A marriage will usually revoke an existing Will unless it was made in contemplation of that marriage. Divorce does not revoke a Will, but it can alter how certain gifts are treated. If your Will has not been updated following a change in relationship status, it may no longer operate as you expect.
Family circumstances are another common reason for review. The birth of children or grandchildren, the death of a beneficiary, or changes in family relationships can all mean that a Will needs to be updated. A Will that no longer reflects family dynamics can lead to confusion, disputes or unintended outcomes.
Assets can also change over time. Property may have been bought or sold, savings and investments
may have grown and business interests may have developed. A Will drafted several years ago may not take account of these changes, particularly where specific gifts or trusts are involved.
Another issue often overlooked is the choice of executors. An executor appointed years ago may no longer be suitable, available, or willing to act. It is important to ensure that your executors are people you trust and who are able to carry out the role when the time comes.
Finally, reviewing a Will gives an opportunity to check that it is clear, legally effective and properly signed. Poorly drafted or outdated Wills are a common cause of delay and stress for families at an already difficult time.
The New Year provides a natural opportunity to review these arrangements and make any necessary updates. Taking a little time now can give peace of mind that your wishes are clear and that your loved ones will be properly provided for in the future.
Widdows Pilling LLP Solicitors can provide advice on reviewing or updating your Will and help ensure your arrangements remain clear, effective and up to date. For more guidance, get in touch with us:

PHOTO FINISH: DIGGING THE MANCHESTER SHIP CANAL
Back to 1889 and the formation of a waterway that would sail the industrial revolution into new territory.
Carved through 36 miles of Lancashire and Cheshire clay, the Manchester Ship Canal was one of the boldest feats of Victorian engineering - in essence, a waterway that would turn a landlocked industrial city into a seaport.
This 1889 photograph captures the back-breaking reality behind that ambition: gangs of labourers, or ‘navvies’, working by hand to dig the vast cuttings that would one day carry ocean-going vessels from the Mersey to Manchester.
The canal’s construction began in 1887 and employed more than 16,000 men at its peak. Working in gangs with picks, shovels and wooden barrows, they shifted millions of tons of earth. Temporary rail lines, like the one seen here, hauled spoil away in wagons drawn by steam locomotives, and before long the landscape connecting this great city was changed forever.
It wasn’t all good, though. Wages were modest, conditions brutal, and accidents frequent. The work was relentless - digging, draining, blasting through rock, and constantly battling water and mud.
It took six years to complete the canal, which opened in January 1894. Stretching from Eastham, near Ellesmere Port, to Salford Docks, it was hailed as the eighth wonder of the world. And sure enough, the project transformed Manchester’s fortunes, giving the city direct access to global trade and independence from Liverpool’s docks.
Looking at this image today, it’s impossible not to admire the scale of the effort, nor should we forget the estimated one thousand men who lost their lives during this incredible construction effort.
