On Our Doorstep DecJan26

It’s the final countdown to Christmas and New Year and hopefully you’re already in a festive mood! I’ve been getting into the festive spirit since the start of November, filling the calendar with seasonal events, social walks and meals out. I’ve bought my fair share of festive food to eat at home in the lead up too!

For me, the Christmas/New Year break is a chance to switch off from work and other responsibilities, and enjoy some mental down-time before the next year begins. Come January, I’ll set out goals for 2026. Determined not to let life rush by, I intend to make every week count and live a richer, happier and healthier life. Plus, it’s time to get to work on my bucket list!

Wishing you all a wonderful festive break! Remember to appreciate the things you have. Enjoy family time, over-indulging and chilling out to movies old and new. I look forward to catching up again in the New Year!

Dog First Aid: The Basics Every Dog Owner Should Know

Every responsible dog owner should know basic first aid.

Dog First Aid Courses are a brilliant way to make sure that you have the confidence and skills to act in an emergency. Often, the immediate actions of a first aider can prevent the issue worsening and means we get our dog to the vet in the best possible condition. It can often be the difference between life and death. A common first aid issue is choking; there is no time to get to the vet if your dog’s airway is blocked so what should you do?

Firstly, open the mouth and check the airway, If there is anything you can reach and remove, do so. There is a risk of being bitten but it is a risk I think most pet parents would take. If the item is bulky, like a tennis ball, we can “milk” the object from the

throat into the mouth by applying firm upward pressure underneath the ball with your two thumbs. For a smaller object, lift your dog by their hind legs and shake them vigorously from side to side and jerk them back and forth. Knowing this and other techniques including how to perform CPR, stem a serious bleed, recognise potentially fatal conditions such as shock and GDV, can literally save lives. I am so proud to pass these skills on to anyone with a dog in their life.

Dog first aid is now in Manchester. Find courses at www.dog-first-aid.com/courses

Why Performing Arts Is Fantastic for Children (and Why PQA Salford Is the Perfect Place to Start!)

Finding the right extracurricular activity for your child can feel overwhelming, especially when every drama school promises creativity and confidence. But the performing arts truly stand out as one of the most rewarding activities a child can take part in.

At The Pauline Quirke Academy (PQA) Salford, held on Saturdays at Oasis Academy Media City, children aged 4-18 get the chance to explore, create, and be themselves in a fun, inclusive, and inspiring environment. Here are five reasons why performing arts is such a great choice, and how PQA Salford is leading the way.

1) Performing Arts Teaches Great Skills for All Children

Whether your child likes to perform or is more interested in being behind the camera, performing arts encourages them to express themselves, find their voice, and collaborate with others. At PQA Salford, students from 6-18 explore three creative classes, gaining skills in storytelling, improvisation, and teamwork, all while building the self-belief to take on the world.

2) Varied Classes, Each Child Finds Their Passion

The performing arts are versatile; classes can involve singing, dancing and acting, or filmmaking, scriptwriting, camera operating, lighting, sound, puppetry and more. At PQA Salford, students take part in three exciting classes: Comedy & Drama, Musical Theatre, and Film & Television, giving them a variety of classes to enjoy.

3)

Professional Learning While Still Having Fun

Teachers build the environment and make the classes fun, educational and supportive. At PQA Salford, classes are led by teachers who work professionally in television, theatre and music. So

students gain authentic insights into the industry, learning from people who live and breathe performing arts. Whilst professional, lessons are relaxed, fun and full of encouragement - the perfect balance of learning and laughter.

4) Big Opportunities and Real-World Experience

At the end of a project, there is usually an outcome, a performance, an award, or recognition that gives children a sense of accomplishment. From creating their own short films to performing on stage, PQA Salford offers unforgettable opportunities. In May 2026, students will take to His Majesty’s Theatre in London’s West End, to perform in PQA’s specially written show. There are also national film competitions, certificates to celebrate every success, and even a the annual PQA Film Festival, where students see their winning films shown on the big screen.

5) A Supportive Community: Everyone Belongs

Perhaps the best part of all? Every child wants to fit in, make friends and belong in a space with other children of the same age. PQA Salford prides itself on being a welcoming, inclusive community that celebrates creativity, kindness and individuality. It’s a place where children make lasting friendships and feel free to be themselves.

Start your child’s PQA journey today, book a free session at: www.pqacademy.com/academies/salford Classes: Saturdays, 10am-1pm

HOW DO I FIND A GOOD REFORMER PILATES CLASS?

When your doctor tells you to try Reformer Pilates, it can sound both exciting and a bit intimidating. You might picture those sleek machines with straps, springs and sliding carriages and wonder - what exactly is this all about, and where do I even start?

Reformer Pilates is a form of exercise that focuses on strength, flexibility and posture through controlled movement. The “Reformer” is a clever piece of equipment that uses resistance from springs to help you move with precision and alignment. Doctors often recommend it to build core strength, support recovery from injuries, or ease back and joint pain. But here’s the thing - not every Reformer Pilates class is the same. The experience can vary a lot depending on the instructor and how the class is taught.

LOOK FOR EXPERIENCE, NOT JUST CERTIFICATION

It’s great if an instructor has a recognised Pilates qualification - that’s the starting point. But there’s a difference between someone who’s newly trained to use the Reformer and a teacher with a background in Mat Pilates and years of experience. Mat work develops a deep understanding of the principles of Pilates - things like breathing, control, concentration and alignment - and these are what make the Reformer so effective when it’s taught properly.

My Doctor Told Me to do Reformer Pilates

How Do I Find a Good Reformer Pilates Class?

Your doctor said Reformer Pilates - now here’s how to do it right, with tips from local expert Kevin Edwards.

WATCH OUT FOR “FITNESS-STYLE” CLASSES

There’s been a big boom in new Reformer studios recently, and while that’s fantastic, many of these classes are based more on general fitness training than traditional Pilates. If you’re after mindful, controlled movement that supports your posture or helps with rehabilitation, make sure the class you choose isn’t just using the Reformer as another piece of gym equipment. ‘Feel The Burn’ has no place in Pilates.

VISIT BEFORE YOU COMMIT

A good studio will be clean, calm and welcoming. Small class sizes are best, so the teacher can keep an eye on your form and make individual adjustments. If you can, watch a class in action - you’ll quickly get a feel for whether it’s focused on precision or just pace.

And finally, talk to your teacher. Let them know about any injuries or conditions before you start. The best teachers will adapt the exercises to suit you.

Reformer Pilates, when taught well, can be lifechanging - helping you move better, feel stronger and reconnect with your body. No wonder your doctor recommended it!

Understanding Probate: Navigating the Legal Process After a Loved One’s Passing

Losing someone close is always difficult, and dealing with the legal matters that follow can feel overwhelming. One of the key steps in managing a deceased person’s estate is probate - a process many people find confusing but essential to ensure that assets are distributed correctly.

What Is Probate?

Probate is the legal procedure used to administer a person’s estate after their death. It involves confirming that the will is valid (if there is one), identifying and valuing assets, settling any debts or taxes, and distributing what remains to the beneficiaries. When there is a will, the process is handled by executors named in the document, who apply for a Grant of Probate to gain legal authority to manage the estate. If there is no will, a close relative can apply to become an administrator, with Letters of Administration granting them similar powers.

When Is Probate Necessary?

Not every estate requires probate. It depends on how assets are owned and their total value. For instance, jointly owned property usually passes automatically to the surviving owner, while assets held solely in the deceased’s name often require a Grant of Probate. Banks and other institutions may have their own rules about when probate is needed, so it’s important to check before proceeding.

The Role of Executors and Administrators

Executors or administrators are responsible for gathering information about the estate, completing

inheritance tax forms, applying for the Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration, and distributing assets according to the will or intestacy rules. This can be a complex and time-consuming task, especially when managing grief alongside practical matters.

How a Solicitor Can Help

Working with a solicitor experienced in probate can make a significant difference. They can provide guidance on legal requirements, help complete the necessary paperwork, value assets, liaise with financial institutions, and ensure the estate is administered efficiently and correctly. Having professional support can reduce stress and avoid costly mistakes.

Getting Help with Probate

Probate may seem daunting, but understanding the basics helps families navigate the process with confidence. Whether you are an executor, administrator, or planning ahead for the future, seeking expert advice ensures the estate is managed fairly and smoothly.

At Widdows Pilling LLP our probate team offers compassionate, clear guidance to support families through every step of the process. From initial advice to full estate administration, we are here to help you handle these matters with care and confidence.

The Birth of Cricket & Tennis in Walkden

In my previous article “Digital Salford - the City’s photo album’, I wrote about the re-launch of the Digital Salford website where you can access 30,000+ historic photos of Salford. (Visit: www.photos.salfordmuseum.com)

New images are constantly being added to the site by the team of volunteers. One I scanned a few weeks ago is shown above.

It demonstrates that the picture side isn’t always the sole source of information. On the reverse is the description:

Whittlebrook Wesleyan Cricket and Tennis Club situated at the northern end of Pennington Street, Walkden. In 1954 the Walkden and District Tennis League boasted thirteen clubs. Tennis in Walkden really began when sports clubs formed connected with the chapels. There had been Sunday School Cricket Clubs from c1880. After the First World War the returning young men wanted something bettergrounds and pavilions and facilities - before the war tennis was looked on by the men as “cissy” - facilities began to be provided (c.1920) for the ladies and the men soon joined in and tennis rapidly became

established. C.1930 tennis courts opened to public in Parr Fold Park - soon a town’s tennis tournament was established - it attracted some of the best players from miles around.

Salford 100 is being developed by Salford Council to commemorate Salford becoming a city in 1926.

Many events are being planned for next year and a number of heritage projects are to be delivered. ‘Joining the dots’ is a project to employ a Heritage Partnership and Engagement Officer. Salford Museum and Art Gallery have been consulting with individuals and groups to select 100 objects for an exhibition and Ordsall Hall hope to have a similar exhibition with 100 photographs. A timeline of significant events in Salford during the last 100 years will be recorded on a website. For up-to-date news visit www.salford100.org.uk. Similarly, the new Salford Link magazine will be on sale in early December in Salford Museum and libraries, or via the Salford Local History Forum website, and will carry further details.
