When it comes to finding the perfect learning environment for your child, the team at Bridgewater School in Worsley believe that it is as much about instinct as academic success. Which is why all journeys at this family-focused school begin with a personal visit.
At this independent day school for children aged 3-18 years, success and happiness go hand in hand. At the heart of the school’s ethos lies the belief that every individual deserves a range of opportunities which will enable them to flourish, and visitors are invited to experience this holistic approach to education for themselves.
Bridgewater School invites you to begin your individual journey
For parents interested in the benefits of a Bridgewater education, the school is holding an Open Day for all year groups on Saturday 7th November.
Besides enjoying the opportunity to speak to the Headteacher and Heads of Department, visitors are also able to discuss the many exciting possibilities open to their child with the school’s experienced and committed teaching staff. Families will be given a personal tour of the school’s unique woodland setting and find out more about the individualised support and teaching that they provide.
Visit bridgewater-school.co.uk/open-day-2026 to register and see just how far your child could go.
For decades, high school and college students aged 14-18 have been tasked to source their own work experience in areas they are interested in. At age 14, most students have minimal understanding of work environments and potential career aspirations after education.
Now 17, with a passion for journalism, I faced the same struggle of sourcing a day placement. After little response from the companies I contacted, Susie at On Our Doorstep was willing to offer me a placement and the chance to publish this article.
There is an estimated 13,850 secondary students from 15 schools in the Walkden, Swinton, Eccles, Salford, Little Hulton, Pendleton, Irlam and Cadishead area. Plus, around 18,300 college/sixth form students from 7 establishments in the Worsley, Pendleton, Eccles, Salford and Old Trafford area.
I am calling on all local businesses to consider offering any form of work experience placement you possibly can. Understandably, not all companies have the time or resources to offer full week placements, but value can be gained from just a single day, or even the chance for students to complete a mini project for your company (like I have for On Our Doorstep by writing this article).
HOW WORK EXPERIENCE BENEFITS STUDENTS
As with any form of experience, work placements prove to be valuable opportunities to develop skills, gain industry insight and improve confidence beyond what is learned in the school curriculum. By exploring the expectations of a workplace, students can build both their independence and their ability to collaborate with others. A few benefits of these crucial opportunities include:
HELP CONNECT LOCAL BUSINESSES WITH THE NEXT GENERATION
Career Clarity: Increased exposure to a professional setting enables students to experience different industries and roles, aiding them to make informed decisions for their futures.
Enter A Real Work Environment: A professional workplace allows students to gain insight into key behaviours such as punctuality, clear communication and appropriate work etiquette.
Valuable Networking Opportunities: Work placements enable students to interact with qualified figures in their chosen field, which can often lead to valuable references, guidance and even future job opportunities!
Improve Student Employability: The presence of work experience on a CV establishes a clear readiness for future employment and allows students to ‘stand out’ amongst their peers.
If all these students need to source at least one placement during their education, supply will never meet demand, but the situation could be improved. Increasing opportunities for students to engage with local businesses will make the process easier. Placements benefit not only students but also employers, giving them chance to encounter their future workforce. Who knows, you may find your next budding employee! Together we can raise awareness so future generations, and businesses, have the best possible experience.
If you are a local business and would like to find out how you could offer some work experience, please find contact details below.

Holly’s Hearts Runners COUCH TO HALF MARATHON CHALLENGE
Holly’s Hearts Runners is a beginners running group, set up in August 2024 to raise funds for Holly’s Hearts UK. Each August we take our non-runners through the Couch to Half Marathon challenge.
Come and join us on our weekly sessions Tuesday and Thursday at 8pm, starting 13th August at Astley and Tyldesley Miners Welfare Institute (better known as Gin Pit Club).
The first sessions will be a mix of jogging and walking, and we follow a structured plan. Our sessions are fun, chatty and fully inclusive. Don’t be afraid to come on your own, or bring someone along if you prefer.
The support provided from the coaches to all runners is second to none. Tracey, who founded Holly’s Hearts Runners said, “It’s a true honour to watch non-runners grow and develop from complete
novices into strong and confident athletes”.
The journey will take us through milestones of 5km, 10km and our very own “Holly Prince 10 Miler”. Over the past two years, two groups of 30-35 Holly’s Hearts Runners have completed the AJ Bell Great Manchester Run half marathon.
Holly’s Hearts was set up by Mark and Jenny Prince, the parents of Holly, who sadly passed away with childhood cancer when she was just 5 years old. The charity does amazing work providing gifts and experiences, to children with cancer and their families.
If you are interested in joining, please contact us through Facebook or Instagram or send a message to 07967 518 426 with your name and contact number. @hollysheartsrunners
MAKING WISHES COME TRUE
The Genie’s Wish Charity grants wishes for people aged 0-40 with terminal, critical and life-limiting conditions, and for young carers aged 5-18, living in England and Wales.
Evie at 17 has battled Hodgkin lymphoma and, after months of chemotherapy, she now lives with neuropathy that makes simple daily tasks painful.
Evie has shown incredible strengthbut she’s feeling uncertain about herself. Hair loss and weight changes from treatment have made her feel self-conscious, and her confidence has taken a hit. Evie’s wish was simple: she wants to feel like a princess at her school prom. A night where she can shine, be celebrated, and just be herself.
“After the most difficult time of her life going through cancer, this wish has put the beauty back into Evie’s world and brought the sparkle back into her.”

Architecture Unknown Ltd scooped ‘Best Built Community Project’ and ‘The Judges’ Choice Design Innovation Award’ this June as the Ancoats-based practice marks 10 years in business.
The double win saw Architecture Unknown’s circa £1.2m Peel Park Pavilion project in Little Hulton recognised not only as the standout completed community building, but also as the most innovative design from across all 110 entries submitted.
The Salford community pavilion has transformed an unloved park building into a fully completed community hub, with a park café, offices, meeting rooms and flexible spaces for local activities, services and groups.
But what makes the project stand out is how it was built.
Using WikiHouse, a low-carbon modular construction system often described as the “IKEA of construction”, the pavilion gave local people a direct role in the regeneration of their own community space.
More than 100 volunteers from Little Hulton helped on site, with around 60 children from The Lowry Academy and St Edmund’s RC School taking part in early construction activity.
Designed for CommUNITY Little Hulton, Peel Park Pavilion now provides a purpose built permanent home for the organisation, supporting its work with local families, young people and residents, including food clubs, youth clubs, social groups, family services, forest school sessions, community cooking and wider activities across the area. To date, the building has been an incredible success, helping the charity expand their reach more than they could have imagined.
Charlie Butterwick, Director of Architecture Unknown, said: “These awards mean so much because Peel
CommUNITY
Little Hulton Pavilion Wins Two Manchester Society of Architects Awards
Park Pavilion was never just a building dropped into a community. It was built with the community, by the community and for the community.”
“Peel Park Pavilion represents exactly why Architecture Unknown exists. It is community-led, low-carbon, hands-on and deeply rooted in the place it serves. Local children, residents and volunteers helped physically build it, which means this space belongs to Little Hulton in a very real way.”
Planning permission for the site was secured in 2021, before the project was delayed by Covid-19. Construction began in April 2024, with the pavilion opening to the public in February 2025.
Co-founder of Architecture Unknown, Daniel Kelso, added: “As a smaller practice, we have always believed meaningful design does not have to come from the biggest names or the biggest teams. To be recognised in this way, in our tenth year in business, feels like a huge endorsement of that belief and of the power of doing architecture differently.”
The win cements Architecture Unknown’s position as one of the region’s most distinctive emerging practices, with a growing reputation for sustainable, community-led buildings and specialist expertise in WikiHouse design and delivery.

Family Law: What is... Matrimonialisation of Assets?
Matrimonialisation is the process by which an asset such as property, inheritance, or other wealth that belonged to one spouse prior to the marriage, or even before the parties met, becomes treated as part of the couple’s shared matrimonial wealth.
Dividing wealth when parties separate can be a complex issue, and disagreement as to whether an asset has been matrimonialised often arises. The distinction between matrimonial and non-matrimonial property can in some cases be crucial and it is more likely to happen during a longer marriage.
The starting point is that matrimonial assets should be shared equally and in most marriages of any length ending in divorce, an equal division is often the fair outcome. This is known as the sharing principle. Non-matrimonial assets are more complicated and often a party will ask the court to ringfence and exclude them from the financial settlement.
Matrimonialisation does not occur automatically and where there is an issue between the separating couple as to whether an asset has been matrimonialised or intermingled, the courts will look at how parties treated and managed the particular asset(s) in issue during the course of the marriage. Such factors include where for instance non-marital funds, such as inheritance, are placed into a joint account or are intermingled with assets acquired jointly by the parties during the marriage (marital assets).
An example of matrimonialisation, and probably
the most common which often leads the courts to treat an asset as part of the matrimonial pot, is where a family home was owned by one spouse prior to the marriage and the property was then used as a home for the family.
When dividing assets on separation, in all cases, the courts look to achieve fairness between the parties. Even where it is found that assets have not been matrimonialised or intermingled, the courts can still invade those assets to meet one party’s needs where the joint assets are insufficient to do so.
Matrimonialisation was revisited in a case of Standish v Standish and in July 2025 the Supreme Court handed down its judgment in this case. The court found that:
n Matrimonial property and non-matrimonial property can be separated.
n The sharing principle applies only to matrimonial property.
n Matrimonialisation depends upon the manner in which the parties treated the asset(s) over time and the intention behind their actions.
n Transfers into a party’s name whether it is jointly or separately is not enough to matrimonialise an asset.
This case brings clarity to the issue surrounding matrimonial and non-matrimonial property and matrimonialisation of assets.
Advice from well qualified family solicitors with a wealth of experience is invaluable in relation to all aspects of family law.
St Mark’s Church, Worsley Restoration Progress
The church has stood proudly on the rise by junction 13 for 180 years, visible to thousands of people daily. Over that time, various alterations and improvements have been made to the fabric, funded either by its founders or the local people. After extensive works carried out over 4 years in the 1950s, it is now time to carry out further restoration work to ensure its safety and to retain its grade 1 status.
Glass Restoration
Since January, work has been carried out on all the glass, both coloured and plain. Both types have significant historical importance. The outcome has been quite remarkable, greater than we ever expected. The clarity and radiance of the stained glass has exceeded all expectations and we are seeing images and colours that we have never experienced. This has to be seen on a sunny morning. There the full majesty of the Pugin glass and the 17th century German glass can be seen when the sun is rising on the east side. The Burne-Jones window is equally revelatory. The panels in the east window of the Ellesmere Chapel are also radiant.
The church was commissioned in late 1843 by Lord Francis Egerton, soon to become Earl of Ellesmere (1846). It was consecrated by the Bishop of Chester in July 1846, although the early church was not quite what you see today. It was designed by a young George Gilbert Scott, along lines and style proclaimed by A.W.N. Pugin. Amongst the remarkable features inside are the old pulpit, the Reredos, the mosaics in the Chancel and the memorial tomb to its founder. All the oak pews are original. And the clock in the tower chimes 13 times at 1pm. You can stand outside and count them!
Restoration of the Spire and Fundraising
The next stage of the restoration process will be making the stonework of the spire and bell tower secure. This will require a greater outlay than the glass. For this, we will be applying for funds from various charitable organisations, but nothing is guaranteed. However, we are always grateful to accept donations from members of the public and information relating to this can be found on the church’s website: www.stmarksworsley.org.uk
Heritage Open Days
The church will be open for visitors during the Heritage Open Days. Staff will be on hand to help, guide and inform people on Saturday 12th and 19th September, 10am to 4pm There will be refreshments available throughout both days. A programme of events is being compiled and will include talks, music, presentations, tours of the building and the graveyard, a quiz and more. Admission is FREE but donations to church maintenance will be most welcome.

Flapjack Apple Crumble
by Nadiya Hussain
Ingredients
Serves: 4
For the flapjack crumble
• 250g/9oz porridge oats
• 2 tsp lemon zest
• 125g/4½oz unsalted butter
• 100g/3½oz muscovado sugar
• 100g/3½oz golden syrup
For the apples
• 1kg/2lb 4oz Granny Smith or cooking apples, peeled, cored and cut into chunks
• 40g/1½ oz unsalted butter
• 1 tsp cinnamon
• 1–2 tbsp muscovado sugar
• 1 lemon, juice only
• 1 tbsp cornflour
• 150g/5½oz raisins
For the vanilla custard
• 600ml/1 pint whole milk
• 1 tbsp vanilla extract
• 4 free-range egg yolks (roughly 80g/3oz)
• 20g/¾oz caster sugar
• 2 tsp cornflour
Since school, apple crumble has been a go-to in Nadiya's house, with the addition of a few spices and the omission of powdered custard.
Method
1. Preheat the oven to 150C/130C Fan/Gas 2.
2. For the crumble topping, spread the oats on a large baking tray and bake for 10–15 minutes, stirring once, until they are toasted and golden in colour. Once toasted, put the oats into a bowl and add the lemon zest. Leave the oven on.
3. Melt the butter, sugar and syrup in a saucepan over a medium heat until the sugar has dissolved. Pour over the oats, give it a good mix and set aside.
4. Put the apples, butter, cinnamon, 1 tablespoon of sugar and the lemon juice into a pan. Cook for about 10 minutes on a medium heat, until the apples have softened slightly. Stir in the cornflour and raisins, then tip the mixture into a 25cm/10in square or round ovenproof baking dish. Top with the flapjack mix in an even layer. Bake on the middle shelf of the oven for 40–45 minutes.
5. Meanwhile, for the custard put the milk and vanilla into a pan and bring to the boil, then turn down to a gentle simmer. Put the egg yolks, sugar and cornflour into a bowl and whisk until the mixture is light. Slowly add the warm milk in a steady stream, whisking all the time. Once all the milk is added, pour it back into the pan over a medium heat and stir gently with a spoon till the mixture thickens.
6. Pour straight into a serving jug and, if there is a wait, cover with cling film, making sure the film touches the top of the custard. Unless of course you enjoy the skin, in which case by all means leave it exposed. Serve the crumble with the custard alongside.
