We are celebrating our 100th issue!

The idea of On Our Doorstep was born back in July 2009. Wanting to run my own business and to be home for my boys, I jumped from the world of Management Accounting to Publishing, of which I had zero experience. How hard could it be?

It was the steepest learning curve ever! Tackling sales, design, content creation, production, distribution... on top of the challenge of being full time mum to two very energetic toddlers!

The first issue came out in January 2010. Now, over 16 years later, we are still here! Much has happened in that time - the magazine expanded from a circulation of 5,000 to 20,000, my boys grew into men and went off to Uni... and I grew old!

I’ve loved working with the community and have learnt so much about our local area and history. A massive thank you to every business, contributor, community group and reader who has supported us.

CLARENDON COTTAGE PREPARTORY SCHOOL

Wrap-Around

COME AND SING WITH US!

Experience the thrill of singing in a large choir with Salford Choral Society.

We’re always looking for new members to join our friendly choir of around 100 people – aged from 18 to 80-plus.

We sing classical and modern pieces under the leadership of our inspirational music director Tom Newall, who makes every rehearsal fun and helps us to sound amazing.

EXCITING VENUES

We perform four concerts a year at top venues like the Royal Northern College of Music, supported by professional musicians and soloists.

It’s helpful if you can read music or have sung in a choir before, though there is plenty of support available for non-music readers.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

We rehearse every Wednesday (7.30pm-9.30pm) at Hemsley House, Crescent, Salford M5 4PE. (Free on-site parking).

There’s no audition and you can try us out for a few weeks for free.

To find out more, email our membership secretary Maureen Price: membership@salfordchoral.org.uk or ring her on 07854 331760. www.salfordchoral.org.uk @SalfordChoralSociety

WORSLEY VILLAGE COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION

Helping to Celebrate the Centenary of the City of Salford

Worsley is delighted to join in celebrating the centenary of the City of Salford by holding festival events throughout the year. Our star event will be a Centenary Village Fair held on the historic village green on the 12th July. Strawberry tea will be served in the marquee where you will also be able to enjoy a glass of Pimm’s. Other refreshments can also be bought to enjoy. Entertainment will be provided all afternoon by the Wigan Ukelele Band.

There will be stalls representing all parts of the City which can be reserved using the contacts provided.

We will be hosting a Summer Quiz Night in the Village Library on 14th July, a Canal Cruise with Afternoon Tea, and Line Dancing for the more energetic! For full details of these events or about the Association, get in touch with Karen or Anne.

Our aim as a local community association is to support, enhance and enrich the lives of all residents. This is partly achieved by holding events throughout the year which include:

• Luncheon Club, every month at the library where senior residents come together for a lunch and chat.

• Coffee Mornings, Fridays in Worsley village library, 10am to 12pm - drop in for a coffee/tea and a chat. Your local councillors and PCSO’s are often present to give advice and listen to concerns.

At any of these events you can join our Association or use the contacts below. Further events are also held and these will be advertised locally. For further information contact: Karen Garrido: 07841 054794

Our Community

Roe Green Beesley Green Community Association (RGBGCA)

A New Chapter of Community Spirit

Formed summer of 2025, the Roe Green & Beesley Green Community Association has already become a vibrant force for good, bringing neighbours together, creating joyful events, and ensuring that residents of all ages can truly live their best lives.

What began as a simple idea has quickly flourished. Our first major event, ‘Picnic on the Green’, drew crowds from across the area and set the tone for what community life could be: connected, lively, and full of heart. Building on that success, our volunteers delivered a hugely popular Halloween Trail, which will return even bigger and better in 2026.

Looking ahead, the team is hard at work planning a spectacular Summer Fair. Easter Saturday will see families hunting for giant, handcrafted eggs hidden around the village - a brand new tradition in the making. For Christmas, we are already exploring ways

to make the festive season shine even brighter.

In just a few months, we’ve also achieved something remarkable: our community Crowdfunder reached its £12,000 target, thanks to the generosity of local residents. This funding will support a full calendar of activities, including quiz nights, lunches for older adults, and much more.

Our 500 Club monthly draw, just £24 per household a year, continues to raise vital funds while giving members the chance to win cash prizes. Scan the QR to join.

The story is simple but powerful: when a community comes together, life blossoms. 2026 is just the start!

Why Having a Will (and a Lasting Power of Attorney) Is One of the Most Important Decisions You’ll Make

Many people assume that making a Will is something to think about “later in life”. In reality, it is one of the most important steps you can take to protect your family at any stage.

If you pass away without a valid Will, your estate is distributed under the rules of intestacy. These rules are strict and may not reflect your wishes. Unmarried partners are particularly vulnerable, as they have no automatic entitlement, regardless of how long they have lived together. A properly drafted Will ensures that the people you care about are protected and that your assets pass according to your intentions.

A Will also allows you to appoint executors you trust, name guardians for minor children, and plan sensibly for inheritance tax where appropriate. Without one, your family may face unnecessary delay, cost and uncertainty at what is already a very difficult time.

Equally important, but often overlooked, is putting a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) in place.

An LPA allows you to appoint someone you trust to make decisions on your behalf if you lose mental capacity. There are two types: one covering property and financial matters, and another covering health and welfare decisions.

Many people believe that their spouse or children could automatically step in if something happened

to them. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Without an LPA, your loved ones may need to apply to the Court of Protection for authority to act, which can be a lengthy and costly process.

Planning ahead is not about expecting the worst. It is about removing uncertainty and giving your family clarity and security. Having the right documents in place can prevent disputes, protect vulnerable beneficiaries, and ensure that your wishes are respected.

We regularly advise individuals, couples and families on Wills, LPAs and estate planning. Every situation is different, and careful drafting ensures that your arrangements are tailored to your personal and financial circumstances.

Putting these documents in place provides reassurance – for you and for those closest to you. If you have not yet reviewed your Will, or if your circumstances have changed, now is a sensible time to take advice.

Widdows Pilling LLP Solicitors can provide advice on Wills, LPAs and estate planning and help you set out clear and effective arrangements.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

Details are correct at the time of publishing. However, please check event dates and times with the venue in case of any changes.

This year marks a special anniversary for Salford which first became a city 100 years ago. Salford has a number of different anniversaries.

2024 marked the 50th Anniversary of the creation of the enlarged city including Eccles, Swinton & Pendlebury, Worsley and Irlam. In 2030, we will celebrate the 800th Anniversary of Salford receiving its original Charter as a Free Borough and looking ahead, 2044 will mark 200 years of Salford being Incorporated as a Municipal Borough, with extended voting eligibility, a Mayor and a Council of 24 councillors and 8 aldermen representing four wards, Blackfriars, Crescent, St Stephen’s and Trinity.

What Salford includes has varied over the Centuries. In 1086 The Domesday Book recorded a population of 63; pretty small by today’s standards but putting it in the top 20% of recorded settlements at the time. This would have grown significantly by the 1230 Charter and by the time of its Incorporation it was about 80-90,000. Although many northern townships were growing because of industrialisation, there was an additional boost in 1853 when Salford incorporated Pendleton and most of Broughton, and doubled its number of council wards and councillors. In1889 when County Councils were established, 61 English County Boroughs, with a population >50,00 were deemed to be too large to be administered by their parent counties. Salford’s population greatly exceeded that criterion and so it had independence from control by Lancashire C.C.

By the 20th Century population was a significant factor for anywhere wishing to acquire City status. The original determinant for becoming a City was the presence of a Cathedral. By the time we wanted to become a City, although we did have a Cathedral (Roman Catholic, not Anglican) the rules had changed to Local Government, rather than ecclesiastical, standing. Some early Cities had minute populations compared with Salford. The rule adopted in 1907

How Salford became a City

was that new cities should have a population >300,000. Unfortunately Salford could only muster a figure of 243,700. We also had the disadvantage that some Home Officials regarded us an Annex of Manchester just separated by the River Irwell. Undaunted, the Town Clerk, L.C. Evans determined population figures (as well as rateable values) from the 1921 Census for other boroughs who had been elevated to City status and demonstrated that half a dozen of them had populations similar to ours (Leicester, slightly less than ours). Evans, with the Mayor, initially George Billington and subsequently Samuel Delves (and supported by our M.P.s) managed to arrange an audience with the home Secretary, William Joynson Hicks (a former Manchester M.P.) who subsequently indicated that The King had approved our application and we were granted City Status 21st April 1926.
