Welcome We hope you all had a great summer! After all the excitement, activities and non-stop entertaining of the children, it’s finally time for them to head back to school. Read our Kids Health feature and find out how you can give them a healthy start to the new school year. Back to School

A Healthy Start

VITAMIN D: From the end of September to the

Back to school is an exciting time but a new term can also mean back-to-school illnesses: viruses, coughs, colds, anxieties and other health issues. As parents we want what is best for our children, but keeping them healthy and active can be difficult. Viruses spread easily. For a strong immune system, children need quality sleep and a balanced diet, rich in vitamins and minerals to maintain health. If your child is a fussy eater, it may be wise to source an age appropriate quality multivitamin and mineral to supplement their diet.

DIET: For a healthy immune system eat a multicoloured Mediterranean style diet packed with omegas and a variety of fresh fruit & vegetables daily with some protein, dairy and grains. Reduce damaging sugar and sweetened food & drinks.

WATER: Staying hydrated has many health benefits. 1 to 3 year olds should drink 1-1.5 litres of water a day; all school aged children 6 to 8 glasses per day.

A Healthy Mediterranean Diet

end of March, the sun in the UK isn’t strong enough to stimulate the production of vitamin D in our bodies, plus it’s very difficult to guarantee you’re getting enough from diet alone (sources include oily fish and fortified food). Taking a supplement is advised.

SLEEP: Restorative sleep is vital to stay well and focused throughout the day. Young children and adolescents need 8-12 hours per night. Routine is important too, late-nights at the weekend may be damaging to health. Lack of sleep leads to difficulties in concentrating and limited learning. Turning off electronic devices well before bedtime, taking a bath/shower and reading before bed will help establish quality sleep routines. EYE TESTS: All children should have an eye check

before starting primary school and yearly thereafter. It's often difficult to tell whether your child has sight problems, which is why regular eye tests are so important. Eye problems are often much easier to treat if detected while a child's vision is still developing, usually up to about 7 or 8 years of age.

FIGHTING COLDS: For a non-drug solution, try

Sterimar Kids Congestion Relief (£7.49, 50ml). It draws and drains excess germ-filled fluid from cells in the nasal lining, relieving congestion.

GERMS: Reducing the risk of infections! Four in five infectious diseases, such as stomach bugs, are spread by hands; children should be encouraged to always wash their hands after the loo, before eating and when coming home. `

THE DREADED HEAD LICE! Head lice will often do the rounds at schools, using a ‘Nitty Gritty’ comb, twice weekly (£7.99 in pharmacies/supermarkets) helps you spot and clear them easily.

OTHER HEALTH ISSUES: If your child has a diagnosed condition such as asthma, eczema or a food allergy, discuss this with the class teacher.

Good luck for the new term ! Wishing you all good health and don’t forget your multivitamins!

NEW SCHOOL SPORTS KIT such as sports shorts, PE skirts, jogging bottoms, fleeces, sports bags, trainers and plimsolls. Doing well at school is key to breaking the cycle of poverty but many families struggle to afford the correct school uniform which means their children can be bullied in the playground, lack confidence and feel isolated. SmartStart is a unique initiative run by children’s charity Wood Street Mission, which distributes uniform and other school kit to children from low income families throughout the year. You can help by donating any of the following school necessities to the SmartStart project: NON-BRANDED NEW SCHOOL UNIFORM for children aged 3-16. The Ellesmere Chaucer Most people will know the name Geoffrey Chaucer and will associate this name with The Canterbury Tales - a collection of stories centred upon a group of pilgrims as they made their way to the shrine of St. Thomas Becket at Canterbury. The plot was that each pilgrim would tell two tales on their journey. The author chose to write the stories in English, and not French - a significant decision since, in the years following the Norman invasion in 1066, French had been the dominant court and literary language. The tales were written between 1370 and 1400 and this choice by Chaucer made the work one of the first major works written in English. A hand-written and richly illuminated manuscript of this work, made in the first decade of the fifteenth century, eventually passed into the hands of Sir Thomas Egerton, an English nobleman and judge who was appointed Lord Chancellor by Elizabeth I in 1596. He started to collect a number of books. Over a few generations, the library gradually expanded, until it came into the possession of Lord Francis Egerton, the first Earl of Ellesmere (1800-1856). By this time, the collection was housed at Bridgewater House, London, where it remained within the Egerton family. With Francis Granville Egerton, who became first Earl of Ellesmere in 1846, the Chaucer manuscript was made available to scholars. The portrait is widely believed to be that of Chaucer himself, the narrator and the author. Sadly, by 1916, taxes were placing a heavy burden upon the family and it was decided to put the collection up for auction at Sotheby's. The American railroad tycoon, Henry E. Huntington, purchased the Bridgewater library in May 1917, 16 LIVE IT LOCAL

through the agency of George D. Smith. The manuscript became known as the Ellesmere Chaucer and was recognized as the 'jewel of the collection'. Huntington became a collector late in life, in 1911, and over the next fifteen years his enormous wealth enabled him to purchase books from all over the world. A true bibliophile, he established his library on his estate in San Marino, California. He paid one million dollars for the Bridgewater Library of 4,400 books. The Ellesmere Chaucer is now on public display there. The Sotheby's catalogue described the manuscript thus: A superb manuscript of the highest possible importance... This manuscript is unquestionably the greatest monument of English literature in the world. W.W. Skeat, the pre-eminent British philologist of his time, used the Ellesmere manuscript as the basis for his edition of The Complete Works of Geoffrey Chaucer, since he saw it as 'the finest and best of all the MSS (manuscripts) now extant.' Chaucer was buried (in 1400) at Westminster Abbey, since he was a tenant of the Abbey's close. In 1556, his remains were transferred to a more ornate tomb in a corner of the Abbey now known as Poet's Corner, making him the first person to be interred in that area. Written by Paul Speakman

HARVESTING SEASON by Geoff Hamilton, Macmillan Cancer Support Volunteer What a summer we’ve had on the Macmillan plot! Pumpkins galore despite no water, Blue Basil flowering so prettily and Tayberries so sweet and juicy. It may have been too hot outside for humanity but the crops loved it. Our Plum tree turned out to be a Cherry (whoops) and the birds stole all the crop. The Crab Apples turned out to be something else too - we don’t know what yet, although the crop is spectacular! The shallots and onions were unusually heavy croppers and we are still eating our way through

the Chantanay carrots. We lifted our Charlotte potatoes a bit early and they were wonderful but only salad sized. However, when we lifted the ‘Albert Bartletts’ they cropped unexpectedly, heavily. The red celery has done well, although several plants have turned green, but they all tasted good on sampling. We planted a Fig tree, for fun, and have been rewarded with some fantastic fruit. So a hot and sunny summer, no water... but what a result! Enjoying harvesting your plot this month!

RHS Garden Bridgewater: Work is underway! Currently the largest gardening project in Europe, Salford’s new 154 acre RHS Garden Bridgewater will open to the public in 2020. Named after the historic Bridgewater Canal which runs along the southern end of the site, RHS Garden Bridgewater is situated on the former estate of the First Lord of Ellesmere, who built Worsley New Hall in the early 1840’s. This once in a generation project will see the Royal Horticultural Society take inspiration from the heritage of the site and transform it into a world-class garden in the North West, while also delivering a programme of community outreach and education activities, volunteering The 4 acre historic lake at RHS Garden Bridgewater Photograph by Mark Waugh and training. With the help of a small army of volunteers, our Horticulture team have been hard at work clearing and preparing the site. Work has also begun on the restoration of the historic 4 acre lake and management of the extensive woodland area. In May local building conservation specialists Maysand arrived on site to begin restoring the walls of the historic 11 acre Walled Kitchen Garden. With 1.4kms of wall, over 5000 square metres of face brick and 100 metres of cracks to stitch and repair, restoring the walls to their former glory is a big job! In future the Walled Garden will Workman in the Walled Garden, RHS Garden Bridgewater contain a Kitchen Garden, designed by HarrisBugg Studio, community Photograph by Mark Waugh teaching gardens, a Wellbeing Garden, an Orchard Garden, a Learning Garden and the central showpiece Paradise Garden, designed by worldrenowned landscape architect Tom Stuart-Smith. Involving young people in the garden from the outset is important to the RHS Garden Bridgewater team. Over the past ten months young people from The Oakwood Academy have worked with the RHS Garden Bridgewater Horticulture team, students from Salford City College have shared their ideas for future play areas, and young people from The Canterbury Chloe Oxton and Isaac Stylianou, Eccles 6th Form College Centre have taken part in a series of sessions facilitated by the RHS Garden Photograph by Kimo Morrison Bridgewater Outreach team. Students studying HNC Animal Management at Eccles 6th Form College - including Chloe Oxton and Isaac Stylianou - have been volunteering every week to help look after our rare breed Berkshire pigs, gaining valuable hands-on experience and skills. This summer RHS Garden Bridgewater will run a 12 week pilot programme for young people in care in Salford and host 12 local young people for a 2 week National Citizen Service programme.

You can meet the RHS Garden Bridgewater team, get involved in a hands-on activity and find out more about plans for the garden at the Students from Salford City College - Prince’s Trust Group Photograph by Kimo Morrison following local events this summer - Little Hulton Summer Festival 18th August, Ordsall Festival 9th September and Salford Big Day Out 15th September. ARE YOU HARD OF HEARING?

A NEW ROTARY SCHEME IS TRYING TO HELP Did you know that in the UK one in six people has some sort of hearing loss? This is more than 11 million people of all ages and as time goes by and the population ages, this number will increase to around 15 million+ by 2035. The difficult part is that hearing loss in all its forms is an invisible condition and as a result its impact is often underestimated. We all like to communicate with people and feel part of a community but those suffering from hearing problems can often feel isolated and cut off from everyday life. Simply managing is not good enough – we all should have the opportunity to hear at our best whether it be at work, home or when we are out and about. Here in Salford, the Rotary Clubs of Eccles, Salford with Swinton and Worsley (Rotary in Salford) are determined to create better hearing experiences for people in our community and have launched the “Let’s Hear Salford” initiative. The scheme aims to inform hearing aid users enabling them to better understand the devices, audit local venues to check the availability and quality of

hearing technologies and to encourage premises to consider their acoustic environment. “Let’s Hear Salford” began earlier this year and has already hosted a public information event at Salford Gateway and started to check hearing loops (which cut out background sound for aid users) in the Monton and Walkden areas. Rotary is now looking for volunteers who can help test more loops, checking signage and finding out about staff knowledge. Volunteers do not have to be aid wearers and training will be given. If we can ensure more buildings and venues have well signposted and maintained loops in the Salford area and staff understand their purpose and value, we can make those with hearing difficulties feel more included in our community. Please help us to do this. in SALFORD
