Welcome It’s great to enjoy warmer weather now and the longer days. I’ve mapped out some traffic-free cycling routes from Monton to Boothstown and Blackleach Country Park and can’t wait to get the kids out for some decent bike rides. If you haven’t explored our local country parks, then now is the time to go. Get a good dose of Vitamin D as well as getting your daily steps in! There are plenty of organised walks to join too - jump to the What’s On guide for details. If you are good with your hands and like the great outdoors, you could volunteer with the Salford Rangers and help upkeep the parks as well! This month, we have a Royal Wedding taking place with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle set to marry on 19th May. It’s a good excuse to have a party with friends and family, or head to the all-weekend funfair at Buile Hill Park. Lastly, if you like your local history, we have an exclusive book giveaway. ‘Salford at Work: People and Industries Through the Years’ by Peter Harris, is being launched 15th May, and we have three copies to give away - so make sure you enter!

Community News

GeorGia’s Children of the World:

A charity on your doorstep helping children who have fallen through the cracks of society G-Festival 18, set for Sunday 6th May, is another great opportunity for the local community to get together and make a difference for disadvantaged kids both at home and around the world! We’ve had another busy and successful year for Georgia’s Children. At home, we have delivered over 400 free school uniforms to underprivileged kids, and assisted Lifecentre Salford (Georgia’s House 5) with breakfast and free holiday lunches. We provided weekly physio sessions to local girl Heidi Lou who suffers from Cerebral Palsy, but now has learned to sit independently! (So proud of what she has achieved).

In Cambodia we’ve built three wells in villages that had no drinking water, another classroom at our remote village school, Georgia's House 6, giving education and hope to 150 children who,

3 years ago, had no school. We’ve also completed 'Carole's Classroom', a kindergarten in memory of Georgia's mum, and saved lives by providing medicine and a tuk-tuk to get sick children to hospital. In Romania we’ve continued delivering food and clothing, whilst developing education at Georgia's House 4 – it gets to -25 degrees in the winter, and without education there’s no way out. G-Festival is a celebration of life, set up in memory of Georgia Murray, but now a community festival serving children of the world in the name of ALL those we have lost. Property Feature

Celebrating 33 years of being “YOUR LOCAL AGENT” Carr and Hume are Salford’s oldest independent Estate Agents and this year will be celebrating 33 years of being “your local agent”. ‘Traditional meets modern’ is a great way to describe us. At Carr and Hume we embrace both longstanding traditional methods and modern online/digital techniques. We have a positive, can-do culture, which always puts the customer first. Our ethos is simple: to offer our customers a transparent, friendly and proactive service. As well as helping you to buy and sell, we also offer a fantastic rental service for landlords and tenants and block management which continues to go from strength to strength. Here is what one of our customers had to say about their recent experience: “Carr and Hume provided us with excellent service from start to %inish. We took advantage of a special offer to market our property which made it great value for money. We were advised what price to market the property at, which proved to be very accurate. Pictures were taken very promptly, the property was listed online on a Friday evening, we had bookings for viewings on the Saturday and we accepted an offer on the Monday. So things couldn't have happened any faster. All in all, we received a great service with great communication and the sales team was a pleasure to deal with throughout. We would highly recommend this estate agent.”

THE LOCAL MARKET... Being established in the Salford area for this length of time, we have seen many of the changes that the city has gone through and are immensely proud of its achievements and the continuing growth of the market in the Salford, Swinton, Worsley and Eccles areas. From the tram links in Eccles and Salford, to the highly regarded schools in Swinton, the historical beauty of Worsley, the re-invigoration of Monton

High Street and of course Media City in Salford, it is easy to see why Salford has quite rightly become one of the most popular cities in the UK. For people moving into the area we have seen a significant demand for Monton Village and the surrounding areas. With the increase of bars, restaurants and retail outlets in Monton, the area has become extremely popular for first time buyers and professionals. However, due to the low supply of stock, prices have increased considerably with a two bedroom traditional terraced off the high street averaging at £200,000. Salford and Eccles have also seen a rise in the buy to let sector with landlords country-wide snapping up apartments and terraces . South Swinton has also prospered - here we have more traditional 3 bed semi-detached properties that cater for families and are ideally positioned for commuting with great transport links into Manchester. Additionally, Moorside Primary and High School has made it a highly sought-after area for families with children. In 2016-2017 the northwest had one the highest growths in property values with an annual increase of just over 6% and judging by the fantastic start we have had to 2018, it would appear that the trend is going to continue. In our first quarter of 2018 we have agreed sales on 80% of our newly listed properties, with all of them achieving a minimum of the asking price. To celebrate this success we offering all new instructions a fixed sales fee of £500 plus vat for the months of May and June. For further information please contact the office on 0161 794 4331.

THE NAZ

Winners of “The Best Bangladeshi Restaurant” Award Asian Restaurant Awards 2018 Asian Restaurant Awards 2018 On Monday 5th March 2018, the Asian Catering Federation (ACF) hosted their first Asian Restaurant Awards. The winners of the inaugural Asian Restaurant Awards were announced at a glittering awards ceremony, held at the Manchester Hilton. The evening, attended by over 500 leading restaurateurs, chefs, food journalists and VIP guests, was hosted by BBC TV news anchor, Barbita Sharma.

The Naz, in Monton, scooped the presitgious title of “Best Bangladeshi Restaurant”. The Asian Restaurant Awards were organised by the Asian Catering Federation (ACF) which represents the nation’s 30,000 Asian and Oriental restaurants. In his keynote speech, ACF Chairman Yawar Khan declared the Asian Restaurants Awards a great success and promised to return next year with “an even bigger and better event.” In his programme notes, Asian Restaurant Awards judge, George Shaw, commented: “Over 25 years ago culinary pioneer Madha Jaffrey told me that too many Asian restaurant owners were in a race to the bottom, under cutting each other’s prices, with enormous menus of poorly cooked dishes. Tonight, we celebrate the achievements of those in a race to the top.” Manchester's Deputy Mayor congratulated Mr Mannan, owner of The Naz, and his family on his success (see below).

Local History

Eccles & District History Society

Women's Suffrage Demonstration It is well known that this year we celebrate women obtaining the vote in this country. However, the struggle had gone in for many years previously and would continue for many years until full suffrage was achieved. Our area was widely involved in the women’s suffrage movement. The 1832 Reform Act had given more people the access to the vote, but was still limited to men. In 1867 a Society was formed known as the Manchester Branch of the National Society for Women’s Suffrage. Their aim was to amend the Reform Act with the substitution of the word ’man’ to the word ‘person’. One of the most well- known suffragettes is Emmeline Pankhurst, daughter of a Salford cotton manufacturer, who was born at Weaste. With her daughter Christabel she formed the Women’s Social and Political Union in 1903. Their first militant action was during a Liberal rally at Manchester’s Free Trade Hall in October 1905 when they interrupted the speaker and ended up in Strangeways Prison. Supported by the Independent Labour Party they held many propaganda meetings in a number of Lancashire towns. During the years 1907-8 there was an immense expansion of all the organisations connected with the suffrage movement. In 1909, for the many offences of Breach of the Peace, Disorderly Conduct, stone throwing etc., there were 264 arrests and 165 imprisonments. The treatment meted out by the police and prison authorities was terrible. One of the victims was Nellie Hall, a daughter of Leonard Hall, the editor of the Eccles Advertiser and District Record. She was an organiser of the Women’s Social and Political Union (W.S.P.U.) and was arrested along with her flat mate Grace Roe, her mother Pattie and her sister Emmeline (named after Emmeline Pankhurst). Twenty two pieces of tube and gunpowder were found in the flat. Nellie, only 21 at the time, along with the others went on hunger strike. They were 16 LIVE IT LOCAL

refused bail, force-fed and drugged. Nellie’s punishment was three months. In the 1910 election the Eccles and Patricroft Journal informs us that the North of England Society for Women’s Suffrage was working on polling day in Eccles, Swinton and Urmston. The picture above shows the demonstration in Eccles. One of the women carries a fake bomb, one holds a ‘Votes for Women’ placard and another holds up a ballot box. This picture shows six Worsley suffragettes. The tall lady at the back is the wife of Alderman WM Rogerson, Chairman of Worsley UDC three times in the 1930s. Unfortunately the image isn’t dated. All the information for the article above is available at Salford Local History Library. The top image above will feature on the leaflet from Eccles & District History Society for their 2018-19 programme. There is one lecture still to take place on the current programme: Wednesday 9th May: Eccles As It Was - A Slide Presentation by Chris Carson. Please note: this meeting will be preceded by the Society's Annual General Meeting. Non-members are welcome to attend.

Meetings are held at 7.30pm at Alexandra House, 395 Liverpool Road, Eccles. The 2018-19 programme resumes in September and runs to May 2019. For more information please visit our website www.edhs.btck.co.uk or email us at eccleshistory@yahoo.co.uk

Competition!

BOOK GIVEAWAY!

SALFORD AT WORK: PEOPLE AND INDUSTRIES THROUGH THE YEARS by Peter Harris Enter to win one of these fascinating books - we have three to give away!

Often seen as the smaller twin of Manchester, its neighbour across the River Irwell, Salford boasts a rich industrial heritage. Cotton and silk spinning and weaving in local mills attracted an influx of families and provided Salford with a strong economy, but it was the completion of the Manchester Ship Canal in 1894 that triggered the town's development as a major inland port and Salford expanded rapidly from a small market town into a major industrial metropolis. The population rose from 12,000 in 1812 to 70,244 within 30 years. By the end of the 19th century it had increased to 220,000, mostly housed in low quality and overcrowded Victorian terraces, leading to chronic social deprivation.

Eccles spinning mill, circa 1900

Manchester Docks, May 1951

SALFORD AT WORK explores the life of Salford and its people, from pre-industrial beginnings to the present day. In a fascinating series of photographs and illustrations, it takes us through the dramatic rise and fall of the textile industry and the town's role as a major inland port, the trauma of high unemployment between the wars, postwar industrial decline and into the 21st century. Finally, we see how this 'Dirty Old Town' successfully transformed itself from one of the country’s most deprived areas into a thriving post-industrial city with the regenerated Salford Quays. For your chance to win a copy, email your NAME, ADDRESS & TELEPHONE NO to competitions@onourdoorstep.co.uk (subject: “Salford at Work”). Closing Date: Friday 1st June 2018

The Plotters

Spring into Summer! Plotting on the Macmillan Plot... COMPOSTING TIPS: Now that we are seeing our

plants growing well, we also need to transfer some vegetation to the compost heap. If you haven’t already taken all the dead leaves off your strawberry plants, now is a good time to clean up. Add a sprinkle of Sulphate of Ammonia to the heap - this will accelerate rotting and improve your compost, but don’t overdo it as too much can stop the rotting process altogether. The same Sulphate can be sprinkled on your crop beds as a nitrogen ‘fixer’, just like a fertiliser, before getting your crops in. KEEPING THE PESTS AWAY: Marigolds and Nasturtiums are good plants to scatter among your crops, they help to keep some pests off, especially Blackfly. Marigolds emit a strong odour that will repel greenfly and blackfly. Nasturtiums attract blackfly and are an effective diversionary tactic to move aphids away from your prized fruit and vegetables. Grow them near tomato, bean, strawberry, cabbage and lettuce plants.

The weather is now ripe for slugs and snails to emerge and munch their way through your tender plants so, keep on your guard and don’t let them fatten up and breed at your expense. WHAT TO SOW & GROW IN MAY: In May the cold weather should be drawing to an end. Here are some of the vegetables you can sow Outdoors: Brussels sprouts, broccoli, root vegetables, lettuces and other salad crops & peas. Outdoors under cover: Beetroot, cucumbers, french beans, runner beans and sweetcorn. Indoors: Cabbages, cauliflowers, sprouts & broccoli. Towards the end of the month you can start hardening off young plants and planting outdoors: Aubergines, chillies, peppers, cucumbers, leeks, peas, rhubarb, strawberries, sprouts, cabbages, cauliflowers, celery, courgettes, marrows, squashes, lettuce, salad leaves and the last of your potatoes. Watch out for late frosts - use cloches if necessary. 20 LIVE IT LOCAL

WHAT TO SOW & GROW IN JUNE: By June you should be safe to sow directly outdoors: Beetroot, broccoli, carrots, courgettes, summer squash, french beans, kale, marrows, peas, pumpkins, winter squash, runner beans, swedes, swiss chard, turnips, cucumbers, radishes, spring onions, lettuces and salad leaves.

Plant out: Aubergines, brussels sprouts, cabbages, cauliflowers, celeriac, chilli peppers, courgettes and summer squash, french beans, runner beans, kale, leeks, marrows, pumpkins, winter squash, sweet potatoes, peppers, sweetcorn, salads, cucumber, tomatoes and strawberries.

Around the City... POORLOTS, IRLAM: The hearing date for Poorlots de-registration is 10th June, but compiling the case is well under way and the legal work will be ready in good time so that a conclusion can be reached asap - the waiting list is getting longer all the time! BEECHFIELDS: Bellway are suggesting they will be willing to make money available for the re-shaping and re-opening of this site, if they get consent to build on part of the old Swinton Wastewater Treatment Works. We’ll wait to see what the Planning Panel decide before getting too excited about this; the SAF has been trying to re-open this site for a long time and we have a long waiting list for plots. MOSSFIELD: There are plans to import several tons of topsoil in an effort to further reduce the flooding of parts of this site. HILTON LANE: The Council’s Planning department is now involved in negotiations to establish new allotments here. Hopefully, we will soon have an agreement on how many plots and when they will be available so we can make plans for letting them.

If you are interested in a plot, please contact the SAF secretary carolyn.collins@me.com.

Salford Voluntary Rangers:

Join in and help improve our local Country Parks

Part of Salford City Council, the Salford Ranger Team works across the city helping to improve our country parks and local nature reserves. The work involves site management, site patrols and litter picks, organising regular events and activities for all ages on our sites and supporting friends of groups at meetings. The rangers organise tasks for the Salford Voluntary Rangers which provides the perfect volunteering opportunity to get out, get fit and get involved in your local environment and help improve your local community at a range of sites including Peel Park, Worsley Woods, Blackleach Country Park & Clifton Country Park. Sessions involve practical conservation work from conserving habitats to more construction themed tasks. There are opportunities for all abilities to join

in with clean-ups, bench building, woodland management, tree planting, pond management and path work. A mixture of weekday and weekend tasks are available and volunteers can even choose to become qualified by attending a free training course and undertaking a series of task days. The Rangers work closely with volunteers and local communities to create exciting opportunities and innovative projects to help shape their local area. The Salford Voluntary Rangers is open to anyone aged 16 and over who would like to get involved in improving their local environment.
