The Ancestral Constellations process is a bridge between Western systemic methods and indigenous African ancestral traditions. My work seeks to integrate these two approaches, to offer a more African centred therapeutic practice. One that focuses on transgenerational relationships, multiple-identities and separation and migration issues in family and community life.

In my presentation I will use the Ancestral Constellations framework, drawing on the chapter that I have written for the BAATN, Colour in Therapy book. Using small dollies as figurines, I will demonstrate how the ‘embodied’ ancestral constellations method can be used to create a ‘visual map’, exploring the ‘deep roots’ of transgenerational family life.

This approach can offer clients a different perspective from which to view difficult family relationships, as patterns that operate within a historical context and as a legacy of past community traumas. These influences are often hidden and can become 'excluded conversations' in the therapeutic space. The aim is to create safe spaces to look at the ‘entangled’ parts of the ancestral tree and explore what strengths can be found to support healing of the current family system.

I am a transgenerational therapist with an interest in the mental health and wellness of Black Diaspora families and communities. I have been facilitating groups for over 25 years and developing the ancestral constellations approach for the past decade. I am a qualified mental health nurse, systemic practitioner, family constellations facilitator, community mediator and NLP Master coach.

My work with individuals and family members explores generational patterns and their influence and impact on the current family system.

I have travelled extensively within the Caribbean and Africa, combining personal family research with professional learning about African healing traditions. I continue to integrate these ‘other ways of knowing’ into my therapeutic practice as a form of ancestral RE-Membering.
