As you may remember, Patty Duke was our cover entertainer story of the Fall 2010 issue of b magazine. I met Duke personally at the Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention, which is held every year in the fall. She was very gracious and hugged me like we were friends. Like many of you, I was saddened to learn of her sudden death.

I really appreciate that so many of our readers take the time to contact us to let us know how much they enjoy b magazine. I often hear, “I love every issue, but this last one was the best!” I will ask why, but the answer is usually, “I don’t know, it just is.”

It makes me feel good to know that my editorial team has put together an eclectic assortment of articles that appeal to the interests of our readers. And my production artists create dynamic and engaging layouts that pique readers’ interests so the stories aren’t just words on a page.

If you have a health, home improvement, financial, caregiving, or other topic that you would like us to address in b magazine, please let me know. The goal of b magazine is to not only reminisce and entertain, but also to educate and provide information that will help you navigate the changing times of your lives.

You’ve probably noticed that there are many profiles about your friends and neighbors. About four decades ago, actress Karen Grassle was practically broke with nary a job prospect in sight and seriously considered saying goodbye to acting. Then she got the call to audition for an upcoming television show by the name of Little House on the Prairie.

That call and the character she originated, Caroline Ingalls, would change her life and her career forever—a career that, up to that point in time, had included stage roles on Broadway, regional theater, some television roles, and performing

alongside such luminaries as Sam Waterston, William Devane, and Christopher Walken.

“They had seen everyone in Hollywood who would have been right for the part,” Grassle says in a phone conversation from her home in the San

Francisco Bay area. “I went to see my agent and a call came for me to see Michael Landon.”

The roles of the children were already cast, as well as some of the adult roles except for the pivotal Ma Ingalls.

“Michael had made up his mind

California and once a year in Tucson, Ariz., according to Grassle. It ran for eight seasons and can still be seen in syndication.

No one is more surprised than Grassle with the show’s popularity and the fact that the stories have so resonated with people around the world, both then and now.

“Even Michael didn’t realize it would last that long,” she says. “It was thought it would go on for three years.”

Grassle grew up in Ventura, Calif., where she developed her passion for theater and dance. She graduated from the University of California at Berkeley, majoring in drama and English.

She spent summers honing her theater craft at such places as the Pasadena Playhouse and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art before moving to New York to join the ranks of other unemployed artists.

She lucked out. Grassle made her Broadway debut in 1968 in the Lanford Wilson play The Gingham Dog, and although the show was short lived, she

found herself working steadily on the East Coast and the Midwest before performing the works of Shakespeare in Warwickshire, England.

Then Hollywood beckoned, and Grassle got a call to do a lead in an independent film. She moved there and soon thereafter was cast in Little House on the Prairie. The rest, as they say, is history.

Out of the more than 150 episodes of the series, Grassle admits that the one from season seven titled “Oleson Versus Oleson” is her favorite. It was one of the more comedic stories, she says, that focused on an issue she strongly believes in: women’s rights.

“In the episode, the women in the town want the men to sign a petition for women’s property rights,” Grassle says.

“The women protest and they forego their matrimonial duties. The writers based it on Shakespeare’s Lysistrata.”

But Grassle didn’t rest on her laurels.

almost immediately,” Grassle recalls. “I was sitting on a long sofa and Michael was kneeling on the floor right next to me. He was really close. After I started reading, he leapt off the floor and said ‘Send her to wardrobe.’”

Grassle remembers Landon as an incredibly talented and intense person.

He was complicated, she says, and while his public image was that of a family man—something that was true, she adds—it was also not the whole picture.

“He was gifted but had a lot of challenges with his own demons,” she says. “He was a real person. Artistic people are not always middle of the road. He was great when he was great, and horrible when he was horrible. I was fortunate to have such a gifted actor, producer, and director in Michael. We had a great crew and one of the most well-oiled sets in Hollywood.”

While the story, based on Laura Ingalls Wilder’s bestselling series of Little House books, took place in Walnut Grove, Minn., the television show was shot in various locations in

drama entitled Battered. Performing alongside actors such as LeVar Burton, Mike Farrell, and Joan Blondell, Battered consisted of the interweaving stories of three women who were abused by their husbands.

Back then, domestic abuse was not out in the open as it is now, and Grassle and Sears were covering brand-new territory.

“We’d read a series of articles on wife beatings by a Texas journalist,” Grassle recalls. “Cynthia and I did original research, and we interviewed people in the field and women who left home due to domestic abuse. For me, this was a counterbalance to Little House. It became meaningful to people whose lives were disrupted by abuse. We made a difference.”

From a performance standpoint, she had no trouble with the Ma Ingalls character, Grassle says, because her own mother informed* the character tremendously. As an actress, though, she yearned to “spread her wings more

often” when away from the Little House set and be more challenged when on the set.

“Yes, I did speak to Michael a lot about that,” she says. “You’ll have to read about it in [my upcoming book of memoirs].”

And, yes, Grassle is in the midst of revisions for her memoir, where she’ll reveal much more than she’s told me during our phone conversation. But until then, fans who wish to see Grassle in person have several options. July 1617, 2016, Grassle will be making an appearance at the Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum in Walnut Grove, Minn.

She also continues to perform on stage and will be starring in Driving Miss Daisy, Sept. 28 to Nov. 6, 2016, at the Riverside Center for the Performing Arts in Fredericksburg, Va. “Theater is my roots, where the actor has full sway,” she says. “No one can edit that performance. While some baby boomers have already settled into retirement mode, others aren’t that far behind. Hard to believe when you consider it seems like only yesterday we were wearing bellbottoms and humming Beatles tunes.

It’s time to get real. We’re living longer, better, and more active lives than previous generations. We’re traveling, perhaps looking toward living in warmer climates, helping with the grandkids. All that takes money. Fortunately, there are options for boomers to make the most of the dollars they’ve made and/or saved throughout their lifetimes.

One of those options is an Individual Retirement Account (IRA), which allows you to save money for retirement in a tax-advantaged way. Another is a 401(k) account—a plan established by employers

to which eligible employees may make salary-deferral contributions on a posttax and/or pretax basis.

So what should you do if an unexpected expense arises? Take out the cash from your 401(k)? Withdraw from the IRA? Or how can the two work together to your best advantage?

According to Erika Eckman, financial adviser with Rodgers & Associates in Lancaster, cashing out a 401(k) is the least favorable option.

“When cashing out a 401(k), the employer is required to withhold 20

percent for federal taxes,” she says. “If not rolled into a qualified retirement plan within 60 days, the entire amount will be taxed as ordinary income for the current tax year. An additional 10 percent penalty will be withheld if the individual is under 59.5.”

In many cases, individuals take a distribution from their IRA with the intent of rolling the funds back into an IRA and using it as a means for a shortterm loan. If a distribution is taken from an IRA, says Eckman, the Internal Revenue Service allows tax consequences

percent on a 401(k) distribution.

“An IRA also creates an opportunity to consolidate investable assets in one place, making it easier to manage, allocate, and create a diversified portfolio,” Eckman adds.

Another financial “outlet” for boomers is Social Security, a “complex system with many moving parts,” says Nathan Imboden, financial advisor with Conte Wealth Advisors in Camp Hill. According to Imboden, recent rule changes taking effect later this year have greatly reduced the number of claiming strategies available to married couples pertaining to Social Security.

Tips for a married couple to think about when it comes to Social Security include whether they will work and have income while receiving benefits, which might reduce those benefits; spousal benefits where a spouse is entitled to a maximum of 50 percent of their spouse’s full retirement age (FRA) benefit amount; and longevity.

As part of longevity, survivor benefits are defined as the higher of the two spouses—surviving or deceased. In this case, the smaller amount of the two will stop.

“This can be a factor in deciding to delay and increase the benefit amount,” Imboden says.

The age of when someone is eligible for the full retirement benefit differs according to when an individual was born. That holds true for baby boomers, born between 1946 to 1964. If born between 1943 to 1954, the FRA is 66.

If born between 1955 to 1959, the FRA is somewhere between 66 to 67. Anyone born after 1960 has an FRA of 67.

“Unfortunately, the specific year you are born and the specific age year/ month you collect determines the percent reduction should you collect prior to FRA,” Imboden says. “The earliest age one can collect retirement benefits is age 62. Average reduction at age 62 is between 20 to 30 percent.”

But no matter what your FRA is, Imboden says, for every year an individual delays taking benefits beyond their FRA, they are entitled to a guaranteed 8 percent per year increase in their benefit for each year they delay until age 70.

“This is called a Delayed Retirement Credit,” he says. “So if one’s FRA is age 66, their benefit amount at age 70 would be 132 percent of their FRA amount. Those with an FRA of age 67 would receive 124 percent of their FRA at age 70. In addition, if there is a Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA), that would be added in addition to the 8 percent guaranteed increase.”

Remember: Each individual has different circumstances or needs, and whether you’re considering a 401(k) plan, an IRA, or Social Security, it is imperative for boomers to discuss their unique financial situations with a financial adviser before making any decisions that could affect their financial future. )))

to be avoided if the money is rolled back into an IRA within 60 days. The tax code permits one 60-day IRA rollover in a 12month period.

New regulations prevent those with several IRAs from taking a distribution from each IRA with no tax consequences, even if it’s rolled back into an IRA within 60 days. As of Jan. 1, 2015, you are allowed one IRA rollover per year pertaining to all of your IRAs collectively.

In other words, those several IRAs are all aggregated and not viewed on an individual basis.

“When utilizing a 60-day rollover, it is important to understand the new ruling because tax consequences can be severe,” Eckman says. “The new ruling does not apply to direct trustee-to-trustee transfers, rollovers to or from a qualified plan, or Roth conversions.”

There are factors to consider with a 401(k) vs. IRA. Investment options within a 401(k) are limited and loaded with fees. IRAs offer more diversified options. Distributions cannot be taken from an IRA before age 59.5 without a 10 percent early withdrawal penalty applied.

However, in a 401(k) plan, if you are separated from employment during or after the year you reach age 55, distributions may be taken with no penalty. An IRA allows for a more strategic tax-planning approach.

Distributions from 401(k) plans are required to have 20 percent withheld for federal taxes, whereas an IRA does not have a required amount. An individual is still required to pay tax on IRA distributions; however, depending upon the individual’s tax situation, it could be substantially less than the required 20

If you’re not close to retirement age, it’s easy to ignore what Social Security is doing. However, some significant announcements late last year make now a very good time to pay attention.

What follows is a summary of notable changes to Social Security at the start of 2016 and ways to ensure you’re making the right retirement planning and claiming (www.consumerfinance.gov/ retirement/before-you-claim/) decisions based on what’s ahead: 1. 2016 Social Security payments won’t increase.

In late October, Social Security (https://www.ssa.gov/myaccount/) announced that there wasn’t enough

inflation in 2015 to create a cost-ofliving adjustment (COLA) to monthly benefits this year.

Understandably, this announcement shook up recipients who look to Social Security for a significant part of their monthly income. It’s only the third time payments were frozen in the past 40 years since automatic COLA adjustments began, but here’s the rub—all three occasions occurred after 2010.

In short, recipients will have to live with an average monthly payment

of $1,341 with married beneficiaries receiving a total of $2,212.

2. Married and divorced individuals may have to rethink the way they claim benefits.

Also last October, Washington settled a federal budget battle in part by closing some notable loopholes in Social Security law that allowed certain married couples to substantially increase their benefits over time and certain divorced individuals to claim benefits

3. Other COLA-related issues.

When there’s no cost-of-living adjustment, there’s no change in the maximum amount of earnings subject to the Social Security tax, which will stay at $118,500 in 2016.

This means earnings above that level aren’t subject to the Social Security portion of the payroll tax or used to calculate retirement payouts. At the same time, the Social Security earnings limit for people who work and claim Social Security payments will stay at $15,720 in 2016 for people ages 65 and younger.

Social Security beneficiaries who earn more than this amount will have $1 in benefits temporarily withheld for every $2 in earnings above the limit.

4. Some benefits are going down—a little.

The highest possible Social Security payment for a 66-year-old worker who signs up for Social Security this year will be $2,639 per month, down $24 from $2,663 in 2015.

The reason? Social Security noted that despite no cost-of-living adjustment, there was an increase in the national average wage index, one of the

statistical guideposts the agency uses to calculate benefits.

5. Service changes.

If you haven’t created a My Social Security account, do so for two reasons: First, there have been reports of ID theft related to thieves attempting fraudulent signups for such accounts.

Second, the agency is making more detailed account data available online, such as estimates of monthly payments at various claiming ages. Also, Social Security expanded office hours in some of its field locations in 2015, so if you need face-to-face assistance, check hours

These new restrictions on so-called file-and-suspend and restricted-claim strategies go into effect starting in May. In short, if you’re close to age 62 (the earliest age you can start claiming Social Security benefits), getting qualified advice has never been more important.

While it might not be possible to turn back the clock, baby boomers are lining up for skincare treatments that can help them look and feel more like their youthful selves. Agedefying facial treatments, from the quick lunchtime peel to the more invasive eyelid surgery, are becoming the solution to many skin complaints that baby boomers face.

“You don’t have to do something dramatic to see results,” said Alyssa Licatese, owner of Blossom Med Spa in Lancaster County. “Baby boomers are embracing even the little things that make them feel better—whether that’s taking the vitamins that are good for their skin or finally using the right moisturizer.”

There are many facial treatments that appeal to both male and female clients at

Licatese’s business. While some clients seek a little pampering, many more want to walk away with a fresh take on youthful living.

One popular treatment is periorbital tightening, which targets the fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin found under the eye and under the brow. Using a machine called an EndyMed PRO, Licatese can use radiofrequency to strengthen the elastin in the skin while

stimulating collagen with heat.

Some people call the procedure “relaxing,” Licatese said, and they simply sit back while the technician gently glides the ultrasound wand across the skin. While the skin might be a bit pink afterward, she said, most people go

Another popular treatment among baby boomers is Intensif RF Microneedling. During this procedure, fine lines, wrinkles, loose skin, stretch marks, enlarged pores, and even scarring can be corrected. Using a tip with 25 tiny, gold-plated needles and built-in radiofrequency, a technician goes over every inch of the face and neck.

The result is collagen that starts to fill in areas that needed a plumper, firmer look. There’s no need for downtime with this treatment, Licatese said, although she said the skin might have mild redness and swelling, and makeup should not be worn until the next day.

A third device that helps with aging skin is ThermoLo. Using radiofrequency,

a client can find relief for spider veins, skin tags, cystic acne, and cholesterol deposits, Licatese said. The radio frequency current helps dehydrate the area, such as a skin tag, so it can be removed. It also can break up the pigment in a spider vein so that it disappears right away.

Depending on what was treated, the client might want to take the day off work to allow for the skin to heal, but in most cases, Licatese said, clients are able to get back to business the same day.

A less invasive and very popular facial option at Blossom Med Spa is the O2 Lift. A client looking for an instant glow for a special event is the most likely to benefit from the facial, which uses stem cells and oxygen with manual exfoliation to brighten skin, clear acne, smooth fine lines, and hydrate skin.

“People love a traditional facial too because it’s simple yet has an impact,” Licatese said. “They get that pampered feeling they want and they look great afterward.”

Some baby boomers also opt for the Vi Peel, which uses retinol, vitamin C, and other ingredients to fight sun damage, wrinkles, and dull skin. The peel takes about three days to run its cycle, and clients might feel a tightness in their skin until it’s complete, Licatese said.

Finally, pigment removal with a laser is another popular facial treatment for baby boomers. With no real downtime but some minimal scabbing, a laser targets sun-damaged cells, and within a week the old skin is sloughed off to highlight new, undamaged cells. For

many people, a single treatment gives them the results they want.

“There are so many treatments out there that many people like the variety of options they have when it comes to improving their skin,” Licatese said.

“Customization means we can choose the treatment that’s best for the individual.”

For baby boomers who want something more, injectables, eyelid surgeries, and tear trough treatments have become very popular, said Dr. Nirutisai “Nancy” Graff of WellSpan Plastic Surgery in Ephrata, Lancaster County.

The most popular injectable is Botox, which has been seen for years as a miracle treatment that reduces the appearance of wrinkles, Graff said. But Botox is just one of many injectables on the market that can help bring a youthful appearance back to the faces of aging baby boomers.

Botox is mainly used to prevent nerves from telling the muscles to

contract and make a motion, Graff said.

Everyone has certain facial expressions that, over time, can cause wrinkles, such as raising the eyebrows to making a creased forehead or developing lines around the lips from smiling.

Dry skin can make the wrinkles start even sooner for some people, Graff said.

The results of Botox last about six months and require continued maintenance. While it does sting a little to get the shot, she said, it’s more tolerable than the flu vaccine.

Juvederm, a popular injectable for treating the “parenthesis” lines that people develop around the nose and mouth, can provide similar wrinkle relief for about nine months to a year.

For those who want to bring back the youthful, baby-cheek plumpness to their faces, Voluma XC is an injectable that can help reduce droopy jowls or a sagging chin line.

Aside from chemical injections, fat injections have been a popular option for

years, Graff said.

“Many people have a poochy area in their thighs or butt where they are more than happy to have a bit of fat removed,” Graff said.

Once the fat is taken from another place in the body, it’s injected into the cheeks or lips to add a plump, youthful look. Most people are less likely to have an allergic reaction to their own fat versus a chemical injectable, Graff said, although fat can be tougher to control.

The harvesting of the fat in addition to hoping it continues to grow in a different area of the body can make it a bit more complicated.

Downtime for any injectable depends on the individual, Graff said, but in most cases it can take anywhere from two to 14 days to see bruising completely go away. Ice is the best way to help the body heal from an injectable because it tightens the blood vessels and minimizes heat loss, making bruising less likely, she said.

Some procedures, such as a Botox injection, might require just a long weekend of recovery, while a fat injection might require several days off of work, she said. If someone wants to have an injectable done before a big event, such as a wedding or party, it’s good to plan in advance.

Eyelid surgery also is a popular treatment option for baby boomers looking to add a bit of lift to the face, Graff said.

As people age, the lower lids can get puffy or wrinkle because of excess skin.

Some people also develop a “tear trough” or a sunken look under the eyes. The upper eyelids often have similar issues, but the position of the lid also can droop over time, she said. That droop can not only cause someone to look older, but it can interfere with their vision.

Surgery usually involves lifting the eyelid muscle, moving “puffy” fat, or adding fat to the tear trough area.

“There is usually an initial scar that’s seen right after any eyelid surgery,” Graff said. “We can now make sure that incision heals so that it isn’t noticeable soon after.

So many people are pleased with the results.”

Eyelid surgery takes about three to four days of recovery with several hours of ice packs on the wound to keep it from bruising and swelling, she said. Many people will sport sunglasses for about a week until the bruising goes down. After a week, it can be safe for many people to wear makeup again.

“A lot of these treatments help people find an enriched quality of life,” Graff said. “We can’t make people younger, but we can help them feel like they’ve regained some of those youthful characteristics.” )))

Divorce, no matter how amicable, involves stress—it signals the end of one phase of life, and the beginning of another.

While nothing can totally remove the anxiety, anger, uncertainty, or fear associated with divorce, those negative emotions may be reduced by a collaborative divorce, said Susan E. Grosh, AJD, an attorney and shareholder with the Lancaster law firm of Blakinger

In a collaborative law case, there are joint meetings held with the parties, their attorneys, and perhaps joint experts or consultants to discuss items ranging from spousal support and custody issues to division of property, “without a bloodbath, so to speak,” Grosh said.

If one or both parties refuse to cooperate on resolving various issues, the process can end, and at that time all remaining unresolved issues would be litigated in open court. If that happens, collaborative law attorneys for both parties are prohibited from acting as counsel in litigated court proceedings.

“The premise is that if you’re resolving it yourself, then you are able to design a final agreeable result,” Grosh said. “If you are settling something, you can do this on the basis that no one, such as the court, is telling you how to resolve it. That makes the resolution of these issues stick better and makes more sense for a particular family.”

Another advantage of collaborative divorce is that issues are resolved in a confidential setting, rather than debated publicly in open court, Grosh said.

Ultimately, a collaborative divorce may cost half as much as would a long, drawn-out, contentious divorce. The process generally takes less time, it retains the dignity of both parties, and it gives both parties a voice and control over the outcome.

“If someone is going to play games or try to hide information or assets, the process is going to break down at some point,” Grosh said. “There is a duty and obligation for the information to be

also trained in collaborative law and represent clients in that alternative process as well,” Grosh said. “The general concept for collaborative law is that it is a different way to divorce—it is a voluntary dispute-resolution system.”

Voluntary dispute resolution is the foundation upon which the entire concept rests, Grosh said. Both parties need to agree in order to go through the process.

Each party is represented by an attorney, as in a litigated divorce.

“Each party needs to have an attorney who is trained in collaborative law, which requires a certain amount of education in mediation and collaborative law training, and not all attorneys are trained in that way,” Grosh said. “Nofault divorce is a law in Pennsylvania that allows parties to sooner or later agree to obtain a divorce.

“Even in collaborative divorce, you have to go through the court system in order to be divorced or proceed after two years of separation. You can’t get divorced without getting a decree from the court.”

At the outset of the process, both parties sign a collaborative participation agreement. To work, it requires that both parties voluntarily disclose information, such as income, assets, debts, etc.

“It’s based on full and fair disclosure; it’s based on not playing games in trying to get information, and not withholding it from the other person so the attorneys and parties have the information they need to make a resolution, which the parties think is appropriate under the circumstances,” Grosh said. “In a nofault divorce, you can have litigated support, you can have litigated custody,

disclosed, and if the process does break down, both parties must engage different attorneys to litigate the divorce.”

Donna M. Mullin, JD, CPA, a director in the tax department of Boyer & Ritter LLC, in Camp Hill, said she has been involved in numerous divorce cases. Divorce cases in general and collaborative divorce cases often involve the equitable distribution of assets, property, and debt. It’s a way to resolve financial issues “without starting an allout war.”

“A lot of times, we’ve gotten involved in divorce cases because they were existing clients,” said Mullin, who also

works with financial matters affecting nonprofit organizations. “We have existing knowledge of what their assets are, and we have existing knowledge of their tax situations—it is less expensive to involve the current couple’s CPAs because the background is there and the trust is there.”

Without that cooperation, it becomes impossible for the CPA to represent both parties, Mullin said. In all of the divorce cases in which she has been involved and where Mullin advised both parties, she represented existing clients and it wasn’t a contentious divorce.

baby boomers and empty nesters, where custody issues are off the table—the goal is to fairly divide the assets, Mullin said. The parties need to consider the tax implications involved in splitting the assets.

For most older people, the primary assets to be divided are their house and retirement plans. Generally, the cost of divorce is not tax deductible.

“Even property settlements can be contentious,” Mullin said. “When we are talking about spousal support, it has to meet the definition of alimony for federal tax purposes to receive special tax treatment as alimony. It is deductible by the payer and included as income to the recipient.”

There are seven criteria used to determine whether spousal support is considered alimony, she said. The criterion that most often “trips up clients is that alimony has to end at death.”

“When a party promises to give the other party a stream of support over the next 10 years—no matter what the intentions—if it doesn’t effectively end at death, then it’s not considered alimony under federal law,” Mullin said.

“For people considering a collaborative divorce, they definitely should consult a tax professional to make sure it meets the federal definition of alimony (if that is the intent). If it is stated in the agreement that it’s not alimony, the feds will respect this.”

Most people facing divorce do not want to cash out retirement pensions, Mullin said. If pension funds are cashed out, it will be considered as income to the parties involved. If it is not an IRA,

and hand it to your spouse to put it in their IRA. It’s often one of the largest assets, and cashing it out is usually a mistake.”

In both federal and Pennsylvania tax law, there is an exclusion from taxation for gain from sale of a qualified residence, Mullin said. For example, if the couple paid $150,000 for their home, but sold it for $300,000, the exclusion threshold is $250,000 if single and $500,000 if married. Most people in Pennsylvania, she said, “are not looking down the throat of a $500,000 gain on their residence.

and it’s a qualified retirement plan (such as a 401(k) plan), it has to be divided by a “qualified domestic relations order, because of ERISA (Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974), in order to be distributed to anyone other than the plan recipient.”

If it involves an IRA, it can be transferred pursuant to a separation or divorce agreement. To be tax free, no one is allowed to touch the money; it has to be a transfer under the IRA transfer rules, Mullin said.

“You have to be careful how you do it,” noted Mullin. “The end result is that you can’t take money out of your IRA

forces you not to recognize gain or loss,” Mullin said. “It’s not elective; it’s required. So if the asset is sold for a loss, you can’t take a loss until you sell it. If it’s a loss and you both want to participate in the tax loss, you should just sell the asset rather than distributing it to one or the other.”

Other typical financial concerns for divorcing couples may involve dividing business assets: stocks, bonds, savings, luxury items, vehicles, etc., Mullin said.

The bottom line—Mullin advises anyone going through any divorce that involves assets of any kind to seek out a CPA or other financial expert. )))

More and more people are loving and seeking the outdoors— as part of their own homes—during the summer or any other season, for that matter.

If remodeling an existing house or moving into a new house, consider a patio or other outdoor living space and how suited the home is to what you want in outdoor living.

Outdoor living areas, expressed through patios and outdoor kitchens, are on the rise, and along with that popularity is the desire to have outdoor furniture that’s not just practical but also beautiful.

What are the trends in outdoor furniture? A few local experts gave their opinions.

When it comes to colors, this year’s trend is “a lot more pastels, like pinks and purple—more than we’ve seen in many years,” said Suzanne Chubb, vice president of Wicker East, based in Mechanicsburg. “Last year the colors tended more toward oranges and red.”

There are also hundreds of choices of fabrics for outdoor furniture—prints, solids, stripes, and geometric patterns.

However, floral patterns are not as big as

they used to be.

In general, Chubb pointed out, color trends in clothing, cars, and home furnishings are somewhat coordinated or even overlap.

Sunbrella fabrics are also “in.” These are solution-dyed fabrics conventionally used outdoors in boat sails and awnings.

Now you’ll find Sunbrella used as patio umbrella fabric and as the upholstery for outdoor furniture and its covers.

The colors of Sunbrella are fade resistant as well as mold and mildew resistant and come in rich, bold colors that will liven any backyard entertaining area.

Throw pillows through a company like Elaine Smith are always popular, but more so this year. You can change the entire look of an outdoor living space with throw pillows, and “it’s easier to change them than upholstery pillows,” added Chubb.

Wicker has always been a favorite type of outdoor furniture because it gives

The store offers a few wicker pieces for outdoors in different styles, ranging from bright colors to more traditional ones.

“We have resin wicker love seats, chairs, and coffee table sets, as well as furniture seating collections,” said Buhrman.

A greater range of materials is available in outdoor furniture than ever before. One is poly-wood, a recycled plastic that looks like wood.

Another popular choice is eucalyptus, which is used as a substitute for teak and is a sustainably harvested and plentiful.

Eucalyptus has similar properties as teak—the same natural feel—and weathers to a soft gray. Its high oil content repels water and moisture.

It is an affordable choice for budgetconscious customers.

Eucalyptus trees also have a minty, pine scent with a touch of honey. Because these trees grow very close to one another, numerous hybrids are produced, which result in diverse scents.

After enduring four rainy, cold days in London, I arrived in Bristol a bit waterlogged. However, when I exited the train station, the sun shone, the sky was blue, and the air warmed. I took this as a fortuitous sign regarding my upcoming stay in Bristol and Bath.

As the largest city in western Britain, Bristol is a historic inland port and is located just across the channel from Wales.

The River Avon snakes through the city and empties into the sea a mere 7 miles away. As a result, Bristol is filled with bridges and boats and is easily walkable.

The city’s seafaring traditions go back to 1051, and by the 14th century, ships from Spain, Portugal, and Iceland were

arriving with goods to trade.

It was also a departure point for ships sailing to the New World. Their rich nautical history can be seen by visiting the Harbourside area.

And the best way to get a great tour of the city is to take one of the brightly painted ferry boats that make 17 stops, allowing a visitor to hop on and off to explore.

While in Harbourside, I recommend a stop to tour Brunel’s SS Great Britain—

the world’s first ocean liner. The grandeur and classic elegance of the liner is a far cry from today’s mega-ships.

In this area you can also visit the Bristol Aquarium and Science Centre.

The ferry boats also travel under the famous Clifton Suspension Bridge, which spans the Avon Gorge. Designed by engineer Isambard Brunel to transport light, horse-drawn traffic, the bridge was started in 1831 and finished in 1864, five years after Brunel’s death.

Today, more than 12,000 vehicles cross it daily. Visitors can walk, jog, or bike across the bridge for free, and there’s a lovely view of Bristol from its lofty perch, but it should be avoided if you’re afraid of heights!

On the west side of the bridge is the Clifton Observatory, which also offers scenic views of the city and the bridge.

It’s a beautiful place for a picnic, and many families and couples took advantage of the warm sunshine the day I was there.

One of the things I enjoy doing when visiting a new city is taking a day to wander around. My aimless travels brought me to Bristol’s Old City, and I discovered St. Nicholas Market.

The maze of shops has been in existence since 1743. I nosed around the small stores and spent extra time in Stanfords, a travel and map bookstore— heaven!

The scent of roasting beef filled the alleys, and many locals sat at tables eating lunch.

The Bristol Museum and Art Gallery was another one of my finds. It has free admission so you can stop in for a few hours. The collection is a bit of a hodgepodge with paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries, Chinese ceramics, Egyptian antiquities, and collections of locally produced glass and pottery.

The museum gained attention in 2008 when it exhibited the works of the elusive Bansky (a graffiti artist whose work grew out of the Bristol underground scene).

Located 13 miles southeast of Bristol is Bath. An UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bath is another walkable city.

The Romans built the baths in A.D. 75 and dedicated it to the goddess Sulis Minerva. They believed the water was a gift from the goddess Minerva and had healing powers.

Supplicants would throw items into the springs as gifts or payment for miracles.

Visitors can see these items in the museum as well as take a tour through the excavated site of the Temple of Sulis Minerva.

I highly recommend visiting the baths and taking the audio tour. Throughout the pump house, baths, and museum there are numbers for audio commentary, which includes historical details.

A few audio stops included comments from the well-known travel writer Bill Bryson. If you want a hands-free trip, you’ll need to bring your own headphones for the audio device.

In the main bath area, you are welcome to pull off your shoes and dip your feet into the water. Although the green color isn’t inviting, the temperature is comfortably warm.

At the end of the tour, there is a fountain where you can sample the water, which contains 42 minerals. I didn’t enjoy its harsh, metallic taste.

There are a number of other places to visit while in Bath. The Jane Austen Centre is dedicated to the famous author and her novels. Austen lived in Bath from

1801 to 1806 and the city inspired her writing, especially the novels Northanger Abbey and Persuasion.

Those who wish to experience life in the Regency period can immerse themselves by dressing up in period costumes and having tea in the Regency Tea Rooms.

The Bath Abbey is located on the main square and worth a visit. The abbey is known as the “Lantern of the West” due to its abundance of windows.

Another of Bath’s famous citizens, Beau Nash, who was a flamboyant dandy and leader of fashion, is buried in the nave of the abbey.

Speaking of fashion, the Museum of Costume in Bath has one of the best

To get a sense of just how heavy these stones are, there is an interactive display at the new visitor’s center where you and a group of your friends can try to move a stone the same size and weight—try being the key word.

Stonehenge is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors can see it from the road or hike into the surrounding fields, but a fence keeps you from getting close.

I strongly recommend buying a ticket and listening to the audio tour. Some people are disappointed that they can’t walk among the stones. Due to soil erosion, it is not permitted.

However, you can go within 15 feet, and there is a walkway that encircles the site. I enjoyed being able to view

the stones without other people in the way. It added to the mystery and heavy importance of the place.

There are many theories about why the ancients (not the Druids) build Stonehenge. The authors of Stonehenge Decoded claim it is an astronomical observatory capable of predicting eclipses.

In 2008, human cremation remains dating back to 3000 B.C. were found around the stones, and this led to the theory that Stonehenge was a monument to the dead.

No matter the reason for its existence, visiting Stonehenge was the highlight of my tour. And the weather remained beautiful! )))

While in Bath, book a tour to Stonehenge. Located an hour away in Wiltshire, England, Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument and the most iconic landmark in Europe.

Built around 2500 B.C. in the late Neolithic period, Stonehenge comprises standing stones arranged in concentric circles. It’s an amazing engineering feat because the heavy stones were moved from miles away.

shingles – a painful skin rash

At my last physical, I asked my doctor about the shingles vaccine. She said, “You’re too young.” Because my eye doctor had been telling me the opposite about the quality of my eyesight and my age, it sounded like a compliment.

My insurance would cover the shingles vaccine at age 60. I had 20 years more to worry about that.

How Shingles Presents Itself A few weeks later, I had a severe earache, like someone was karate-chopping my eardrum. Five days passed. A blistered, red rash broke out on one side of my face.

Black and red sores oozed hot. Intense itching, pain, and burning accompanied.

The lightest touch set off a chain reaction of nerve pain.

“Many people will feel shingles coming on before the rash appears, so it’s important to have knowledge of what it can feel like,” said Megan Mendez Miller, D.O., Family and Community Medicine, assistant professor, Penn State Hershey Medical Center.

Shingles can be painful in whichever nerve distribution (dermatome) it has

been activated. It can be mistaken for a different disease typically affecting the body region of the shingles outbreak, such as back pain being diagnosed as a muscle strain or a kidney stone.

According to the CDC, 33 percent of the people who once had chicken pox will develop shingles later in life. Chickenpox lies dormant in the spinal cord after its symptoms disappear, and the immune system blocks recurrences.

Much more severe and impactful, shingles spreads through nerve bands, confining itself to one side of the body. It can appear in more than one area and can affect internal organs.

“No one knows why shingles develops in some people, but not others,” Miller said.

Who Contracts Shingles?

The average age to contract shingles is 52. In addition to the waning-immunesystem characteristic of the 60-plus age bracket, those with compromised immune systems are more susceptible to shingles. This includes pregnant women, chemotherapy patients, and AIDS patients.

“Often, there is a major life change that precedes shingles or other stressrelated diseases,” Miller noted.

A cluster of small bumps (1) turns into blisters (2) that resemble chickenpox lesions. The blisters fill with pus, break open (3), crust over (4), and finally disappear.

This process takes four to five weeks. A painful condition called post-herpetic neuralgia can sometimes occur. This condition is thought to be caused by damage to the nerves (5), and can last from weeks to years after the rash disappears.

Possible Complications Twenty-five percent of shingles sufferers develop complications.

For me, the outbreak spread from my right ear to the right side of my scalp, face, and inside my mouth. The shingles stayed in their nerve band, ending on an imaginary line in the center of my chin.

Because the sores clustered inside my ear, I could not shut my jaw until the outbreak cleared up.

Because of the rash’s proximity to my eye, I consulted with an ophthalmologist.

Gautam Mishra, M.D., of Schein Ernst Mishra Eye (locations in Lemoyne and Harrisburg), said the worst place to contract shingles was “on the face and eye. Depending on how shingles travels through nerves, shingles can cause longterm or permanent damage in the eye in terms of loss of vision.

“Over 50 percent [of shingles sufferers] get neurotrophic keratopathy, or neuropathy of the eye,” Mishra said.

“This can cause eye problems long term.”

Neurotrophic keratopathy is a degenerative disease characterized

by decreased corneal sensitivity and poor corneal healing. The disorder leaves the cornea susceptible to injury and decreases reflex tearing. It is a progressive disorder, becoming worse over time. The list of complications is long, including blurry vision.

“

Ramsay Hunt Syndrome is a complication affecting facial muscles and the inner ear. Symptoms include hearing loss or abnormal sounds, dizziness or vertigo, and loss of taste in the tongue. Its most noticeable characteristic is facial droop resembling Bell’s palsy.

Another common complication of shingles is postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), a burning, stabbing pain due to nerve damage. It is characterized by either markedly decreased or hypersensitive sensation in the affected area. In rare cases, a patient may experience muscle weakness, tremors, paralysis, or neurological problems. PHN affects 16 percent of shingles patients.

A bacterial infection can fester in open sores.

“I have hospitalized patients with shingles because of impetigo-staph or strep infections,” Miller said.

Spreading Shingles Though the shingles virus manifests from the chickenpox virus, there is a chance of contracting shingles through physical contact.

“If you touch an open [shingles] sore on someone else, and then touch your eye or other mucous membrane, that can

spread the virus,” Mishra said.

Keep the rash covered, and don’t touch it. Also, avoid people in the high-risk category.

Good hygiene and hand washing is sound prevention advice for shingles.

Miller also recommended “good sleep, healthy diet, and medications that don’t suppress your immune system.”

As far as reactivation, “mental, emotional, or physical stressors can cause it. So can surgery or illnesses,” Miller said. “Anyone who is immune compromised is definitely at higher risk.

“Shingles is not as contagious as chickenpox,” Miller said. Once the sores develop crusts, they are no longer transmittable.

Vaccination If shingles holds no age discrimination, wouldn’t it make sense for everyone to be vaccinated, not just those over 60?

Not necessarily. The vaccine, FDA approved in 2006, has been studied for people aged 50-plus. CDC’s guidelines recommend vaccinations for those 60plus.

“It reduces the chances of contracting shingles by 50 percent, and it could lessen the severity by up to 60 percent if you do get [shingles],” Mishra said. “It also reduces the chance of PHN by 67 percent.”

There is no official recommendation for when to receive the vaccine postoutbreak.

Because it is a live virus, a pregnant woman should not be vaccinated.

“The vaccine helps tremendously,” Mishra said.

“Throughout the world, the vaccine has been underutilized. I believe in herd immunity, helping the community through educating and vaccinating the public,” Miller said. Herd immunity is vaccinating large populations against a contagious disease so that the likelihood of an outbreak is reduced.

Since 1995, there has been a 40 percent increase in shingles cases in the United States. Because more people are being immunized for chicken pox and that vaccine is effective, you would think we would see fewer cases of shingles.

But the opposite is true, and doctors

have no idea why.

“This is a stronger argument to get vaccinated, sooner rather than later,” Mishra said.

Treatment Though there isn’t a cure for shingles, there are treatments to speed the healing.

“If shingles erupt, seek medical attention as soon as possible,” Mishra said. “The oral antiviral medication helps reduce severity from possible complications. The sooner you start an oral antiviral treatment, the better.”

Your doctor can also prescribe medication to help combat PHN and manage pain while your nerves heal.

Topical antiviral treatments are not approved for shingles and have not been proven effective.

Blisters can take weeks to scab over and heal and, unfortunately, residual symptoms can last from several months to years.

A leaking basement doesn’t have to bleed your wallet dry.

There are a number of solutions both inside and outside your house to keep excess water out. And excess moisture isn’t always obvious.

Ken Wenzel, of Penn Stone, said, “If you rub your hand over your walls and notice a white powder, this is called efflorescence, or EFF. It’s not always an indication that water has leaked through the wall, but that moisture is present on the outside of the wall and trying to work its way to the inside.”

Water weakens the foundation each time it enters. The presence of EFF is due to transmission of water vapors through block basement walls and foundations.

Houses susceptible to basement water leakage are generally situated on low areas or at the bottom of an incline.

Water takes the path of least resistance, and it flows downhill.

If a house has a cracked foundation or pavement, this means that water has made its way into the porous concrete.

When water freezes and thaws, cracks result.

Moisture may seep through seams where the wall and the floor meet or even up through the cement floor.

Especially in sunken basements, look for signs of moisture not only on floors and walls, but also on ceilings that are at or below ground level. If water entered into the house from the ground level, it may spread farther across the basement

ceiling by being absorbed into the ceiling insulation. The insulation will often hold water before showing any outer evidence, but mold or mildew will eventually grow.

If you have a drop ceiling, you can remove the tiles to examine for water damage. Finished basements are a little harder to inspect, but feel for dampness where the basement floor and wall meets. At least you’ll know if water is seeping down between the walls.

Also, it’s necessary to check with the municipality where the hardscape system is being installed. In certain jurisdictions, regulations do not allow water to flow from a residence into the public water supply. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation partners with government to legislate reductions in polluted stormwater runoff in this part of Pennsylvania.

If your grandchildren are infants or toddlers, before you know it, they’ll be highly mobile—and into everything. That’s why it’s a good idea to make your home a safety zone well before your grandchildren start crawling.

Toddlers, especially, are injury magnets. In fact, a study in Pediatrics found that childhood injuries peaked at 15 to 17 months of age, which isn’t surprising considering that these natural explorers typically put everything in their mouths but lack the cognitive development to know right from risk.

“Because toddlers aren’t yet able to

protect themselves, it’s 100 percent up to the adults around them to provide a safe environment,” says Rose Ann Soloway, R.N., of the National Capital Poison Center in Washington, D.C. Still, it’s not realistic to expect yourself to be vigilant every single moment.

“You’re human. You will get

distracted,” says pediatrician Robert Sege, M.D., Ph.D. A better idea? Think one step ahead and try to minimize the dangers in your grandchild’s environment.

In the Kitchen • Get into the habit of drinking coffee, tea, and other hot beverages from a

travel mug and use placemats instead of tablecloths. Also, stir microwave food carefully and check it before serving it to your grandchild. It should feel just slightly warm.

• Turn the water heater down to 120 degrees F or less to prevent scalds.

• Hot liquids, hot water from the tap, and foods steaming right from the microwave are a major cause of burns in toddlers, whose skin is naturally thinner, and thus more sensitive to heat, than adults’.

• Store cleaning fluids, such as Windex, which look like fruit juice to a child, in their original containers, locked in a cabinet out of sight and reach of your grandchild.

• Push teakettles and electric coffeepots away from the counter edge and wrap dangling cords in a twist tie or rubber band. Or tape cords to the wall with masking tape or a cord cover.

• Cook only on the back burners of the stove and turn handles so they don’t extend over the edge of the cook top.

• Cut food into bite-size pieces— especially hot dogs, cherry tomatoes, grapes, and gummy candy—to reduce the risk of choking. And don’t give toddlers peanuts; they’re not appropriate for this age group.

In the Nursery • Don’t buy a “pre-owned crib” at a yard sale, thrift shop, or online. Because crib safety standards change all the time, it’s important to buy new.

• Updated federal crib safety standards went into effect in June 2011, which stopped the manufacture and sale of dangerous, traditional drop-side cribs; required stronger mattress supports and more durable hardware; and made safety testing more rigorous.

• Don’t use crib bumpers or crib positioners (wedges used to keep baby sleeping on his back) or place blankets, stuffed animals, or toys in the crib. Each

of these is considered a strangulation or suffocation hazard. When it comes to crib safety, keep in mind that bare is best.

• Position your grandchild’s crib mattress at its lowest setting, if you haven’t already. If your grandchild still climbs out of his crib, put him in a toddler bed with railings or consider putting the crib mattress on the floor.

“Kids can break bones if they jump from the crib rail,” says Sege.

• Arrange your grandchild’s crib and other nursery furniture away from a window to prevent falls.

• Cut looped cords on window blinds in two, or choose window treatments that don’t use cords; they’re a major strangulation hazard.

• Avoid high chests or tables, or bolt bookcases and chests to the wall so they won’t tip if your toddler grandchild scales them. You can find mounting hardware at most hardware stores.

In the Home Office • Keep your home office off limits to toddlers by locking the door or cordoning off the area with safety gates.

In the Bathroom • To reduce the risk of drowning, keep the toilet lid down when not in use, invest in a toilet lock, or block off the doorway with a safety gate.

All Around the House • Continuously collect choking hazards on the floor, such as small toys (anything that fits in a toilet paper roll qualifies), coins, batteries, and bits of popped Latex balloons.

What makes balloon pieces particularly dangerous is that they conform to the shape of a child’s airway, which makes them difficult to dislodge, and they can easily go in farther as a child inhales.

• Never leave the room or answer the phone when your grandchild is taking a bath.

• Install pressure-mounted gates at the bottom of stairs and hardware-mounted gates at top of stairs. To reduce the risk of falls, keep them up until your grandchild is 2 years old.

• Keep all medicines and vitamins, especially those containing iron, in their original, child-resistant containers

• Place TVs and DVD and Blu-ray players on a wall-mounted stand or a shelf fastened to the wall.

Outward Bound • Keep the front, back, and sliding glass doors of your home locked when you’re home so your grandchild can’t sneak out of the house and head to the nearest swimming pool, pond, street, or driveway.

• Purchase a tall flag for the back of your grandchild’s tricycle or riding toy so it will be visible to motorists. You should also be sure your grandchild has a certified helmet, and always supervise when he or she is riding.

• Make sure your grandchild’s swing set has a soft landing.

• Empty all 5-gallon buckets; they’re a formidable drowning hazard. If you’re using a cleaning solution, don’t let it sit around, and store the bucket upside down so it can’t collect water.

• Store matches, antifreeze, charcoal lighter fluid, windshield wiper fluid, gasoline, and oil in their original containers, out of children’s sight and reach in a locked cabinet.

• Don’t let a toddler play with wild mushrooms growing in your yard. A number of wild mushrooms can be dangerous, even fatal, if a toddler swallows even just a small amount.

On the Road • Don’t leave medication on nightstands or in suitcases. Place it out of reach and sight of children.

• Don’t buy a used car seat. There are new requirements for infant seating (facing back or front), toddler seats, and then the booster chair until your grandchild meets the standards for car seatbelts. )))

Summer is a great time for families to get together to kick back and relax at a backyard pool or at the beach. Grandparents enjoy watching their grandkids burn off extra energy splashing around while their own “children” enjoy some much-needed time sitting back and relaxing.

Before jumping into the pool or arriving at the beach, though, evaluate your grandchild’s water-safety knowledge and swimming skills.

While some kids have the opportunity to swim year round, most only spend time in the pool or at the beach in the summer or during vacations. This makes it essential for parents and grandparents to go over water-safety rules before the kids get excited and distracted.

The United States Swim School Association has compiled the following tips for preparing children to be around water.

Water-Safety Tips Create a verbal cue that must be given by an adult before any child can enter the pool.

Gather the adults of your extended family if nieces, nephews, and other friends and relatives are swimming together to create an agreed-upon set of pool rules before the kids are allowed into the water.

Select a parent to be the designated “water watcher.” This adult should not be drinking alcohol while children are in or near the water.

Take time to familiarize children with the pool they will be swimming in, e.g., where the shallow and deep ends are, where stairs to get in and out are located, and where they can and cannot swim.

If visiting a hotel with an indoor pool or water park, do not rely on lifeguards to constantly monitor children. You cannot be sure how experienced a lifeguard is and should never assume. It might take a new guard time to notice an unsafe situation in a crowded pool, and you need to be ready to react first if your grandchild needs help.

Do not use water wings or pool floats as a substitution for supervision if your grandchild is not a strong swimmer.

Always go with children to the hotel pool. Do not let them swim unsupervised.

Before allowing children to wade into the ocean, explain to them that they need to be constantly watching for waves that could knock them over and other potential dangers. An automotive repair specialist and owner of CTM Automotive by day, Clint Murray is proud of the work his company does and the customer service they provide.

“We’ve been in the same location for 27 years, and we have a lot of repeat customers. We don’t need to do much advertising because people are happy with what we do and they tell others.

Word of mouth works great for us,” he said.

But in the evenings and on the weekends, Murray takes on another

persona, one that he’s equally proud of and one that gives him a great amount of joy—he’s an avid and talented 8-ball player and has been honing his skills since he was 5 years old.

The game of 8-ball is basically billiards, played on a pool table, but the final objective is “making the 8 ball,” Murray said. (It is sometimes called

solids and stripes.) He can recall as far back as 1964 playing with his dad as a youngster.

“It came easy to me. I guess you could say I had a knack for it,” he said.

“I couldn’t even see over the top of the table back then!”

Murray is a longtime member and currently the vice president and the

people ))) behind the 8-ball

treasurer of the Lancaster County 8-Ball League. The league consists of teams who travel to different locations to play teams from other leagues.

“This year, we have 15 teams, and I’m serving as the captain,” he said.

“Some years we’ve had as many as 30 teams.”

Mostly a bar league, one must be 21 years old to join, but Murray said “younger kids are just itching to join; they can’t wait to play. It’s amazing how many people want to learn to play! You would not believe how many teams there are in Lancaster County as a whole.

Probably 50 to 60 different teams. It’s a very popular sport.”

Part of the draw, in his opinion, is that this is a sport that you can pick up when you’re very young and continue to enjoy for your entire life.

“We have guys in their 80s and 90s still playing,” he said. “It’s a close-knit group in our league, and people tend to join and stay members for a long time.”

Modestly, Murray admits that he has a few trick shots up his sleeve and said that “people enjoy watching me goof around—it’s my personality, I guess.”

Although it’s a predominantly male sport, there are women who play as well.

“We have some husbands and wives who play on the same team, and also some who really prefer being on different teams,” he said.

A typical night of league play will average 21 games for the night overall, taking about 10 minutes per game.

Because of his many years of experience and high skill level, Murray is a sought-after teacher for those who want to learn the game and learn it right.

“I know my way around the table, and I’m more than willing to share my expertise,” he said. “I will teach someone who is willing to learn everything I know.”

Not only do the members of the league participate in local tournaments, but they also raise money at some of those tournaments for local charities.

“In 2015 our league raised $14,000 for the CASA here in Lancaster, an organization set up to help children,” Murray said. “And the really neat thing is that the Riverside Camping Association 8-Ball League matched our donation. The CASA people were stunned, and we were all really excited to be able to give them a donation of that size.”

So what keeps the league members coming back night after night, year after year?

“The camaraderie of the people and the challenge of the game,” Murray said. “Every game is different. You never know what’s going to happen, depending on the skill level of the players. And it’s just fun to be with people who love the sport as much as you do. Back in the 1990s, when she was a busy mother of three children, Marlene Usdin remembers talking with a friend about her friend’s volunteer work with the Literacy Council of Lancaster-Lebanon.

“It sounded interesting to me, so I asked her questions because I was curious,” she said. “I thought at the time that it sounded like something I would someday be interested in doing, when I had more time. So I tucked the idea away.”

Flash forward a few years, when Usdin found herself becoming restless and needing something more to do.

“I remembered the Literacy Council and how interesting it had sounded to me when I first heard about it,” Usdin said. “I really believed in the work they were doing and wanted to be a

part of it. So now that I had the time to pursue volunteering there myself, I went through the training program and became a tutor in 2010.”

Tutors with the Literacy Council typically work with one adult student at a time, although that can be altered as needed, meeting with them usually three days a week. A tutor can assist an adult student with seeking employment, furthering their education, and just supporting their personal and professional goals in any way they can.

“I have no teaching background myself,” Usdin said, “but over 50 percent

of our tutors hold degrees, some advanced degrees, in a variety of areas.

For example, we have former educators, retired military officers, and professors, all working as tutors. It’s a mix of everything, really. They bring invaluable knowledge and life experience to their students.”

But it isn’t just the adult students who are benefitting from the time spent with their tutors. Usdin said that the tutors get just as much enjoyment out of their interactions with their students.

The week I placed my 82-year-old mother in a personal care home was the same week my 5-year-old son started kindergarten.

The decision to move Mom out of her home was made after months of agonizing discussions with my brothers and sister. We all spent hours and hours researching her options, being very reluctant to take any of Mom’s independence away from her.

As time went on, it became increasingly apparent that she wasn’t able to properly and safely care for herself the way she had done for decades. We were all in agreement that Mom couldn’t live alone any more. But what was the best solution?

There were many options to take into account. We discussed everything from Mom moving in with one of us (a choice she would never go for) to having someone live with her, to moving her to a residential care facility.

Increasingly, adult children are faced with this same situation. Sandwiched between generations, still in the throes of raising their families, they are also having to make decisions for aging parents. In fact, nearly one in four households in the U.S. is caring for an older parent or relative.

We are descriptively called “The Sandwich Generation”—feeling pushed from two sides—caring for our own children and finding ourselves a parent to Mom or Dad. After months of investigation, we found the perfect care community. Mom has her own room, all of her medications are administered, she has daily interaction with lots of people, her meals are provided for, and there is someone available 24 hours a day (if she needs anything).

The environment is stimulating and the residents are cared for lovingly. I wanted to provide all of these things for my mother. With the challenges of raising three children and caring for a husband, I wasn’t able to do all of them myself. For my situation, this was an answer to a prayer.

Becoming your parent’s parent may seem like a tremendous mountain to climb. You may feel that you are all alone. However, there are millions of baby boomers providing both emotional and financial support to their parents, while raising their own children.

There are many local and national resources to make the quest easier. Take the time and do the research. You’ll then be able to make informed choices.

After all, Mom and Dad made the best choices for us when we couldn’t do it for ourselves. Here’s how to return that favor.

Where to Start Your choice of what type of elder care to use will depend on what your parent is capable of doing, both physically and mentally. For example, if your mom can do light housecleaning, but needs help with heavy tasks, all you may need to do is to connect with a homecare agency that assists with nonmedical necessities.

If transportation is an issue, we are fortunate in this region to have no-cost or low-cost transportation services for senior citizens.

If your parents have come to a place in their lives where they are unable to remain in their current living situation without some changes, then it’s time to consider other options. Everything from adult day services, a personal care home, an assisted living residence, or a nursing home to homecare, home-delivered meals, or moving in with a relative are possibilities.

Caring for the Caregiver In her book The Complete Eldercare Planner, Joy Loverde devotes an entire chapter to caregivers, with a focus on taking care of the caregiver.

“According to Children of Aging Parents, Inc., family members provide 80 percent of the care of aging relatives,” Loverde notes. “They do so without pay, often with little or no assistance, while coping with competing

It’s best to accept your feelings but be on the lookout for early warning signs of trouble, such as becoming aware of your persistent irritability, sleep problems, depression, anxiety, and temper flare-ups.

Take a step back and prioritize tasks.

Don’t feel like everything must be done today. Take breaks. Give yourself a daily change of scene.

It’s not uncommon for a caregiver (usually a woman) to spend nearly 18 hours a week caring for an aging parent.

Joan, Steve, and Ross are siblings who are dealing with the death of their mother, which ended up leaving their father, Matt, living at home alone.

The loss of their mother and the grieving they were going through left the family emotionally raw.

The kids are now concerned about their father living safely at home alone.

Matt has mild dementia as he enters his 86th year. The house is a two-story home with Matt’s bedroom on the second floor. Fall risk is a major concern as he has experienced falls in the past.

Joan and Steve live near their father, while Ross lives in another state, a seven-hour drive away. The kids believe their father needs a caregiver to assist him but are not in agreement about how to go about this.

Ross feels the family should hire a professional caregiving company, while Joan and Steve believe they can manage the situation themselves with the help of some neighbors.

Ross also felt strongly that his father’s bedroom should be relocated downstairs so as to minimize the fall risk. Joan and Steve don’t agree with that move and stated, “We are here and see Dad every day.” This comment led to hard feelings between these siblings.

What to do?

The feelings Joan, Steve, and Ross are experiencing are all too common in adult children caring for a loved one. Our parents took care of us when we were growing up, but now many of our parents need us as they enter their golden years.

Unfortunately, with that comes

disagreements from family members on what’s best for Mom or Dad when they need help with day-to-day activities or even when their loved one becomes ill.

Here are seven of the most common situations that I see all the time, along with potential solutions.

A Parent Doesn’t Want Care If a parent refuses to move to a personal care or assisted living facility or won’t allow assistance through an inhome care provider, let them know you are simply presenting options so their quality of life remains stable.

Always let them feel in control of these important decisions, and make it clear you are presenting these options because you love and care about them and want the best for them.

One Child is More Involved than Others Caring for an elderly mother or father is hard work but can be even more overwhelming when only one child takes an active role in the process.

If there are other siblings in the picture, don’t assume they know how you’re feeling or what you need. Let them know you need help. Even if a sibling lives at a distance, there are plenty of ways they can play a role.

Perhaps they can visit for a short period of time, assist with finances, or help research potential homecare providers.

Does Mom or Dad Need Care?

Oftentimes, family members disagree over whether or not a parent needs care, and if so, what kind of care is needed.

Seek the objective opinion of a family physician or other qualified healthcare professional.

Locate a quality personal homecare agency and ask for a free in-home assessment.

End-of-Life Care and Wills While one family member might want hospice assistance for their loved one, another might want to bring a terminally ill parent into their home and care for them. This is why everyone should have a living will that spells these things out clearly so there is no confusion or disagreement when the parents might not be able to answer for themselves.

It’s also important that a will be drafted so after the person’s death, it is very clear who inherits what.

Dealing with Caregiver Burnout Caregiver burnout can be a major contributing factor in adult children disagreeing on the path of care for their parents. The added stress can exacerbate feelings and emotions.

Caregiver burnout is a real phenomenon and is accompanied by a state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion that may be accompanied by a change in attitude—from positive and caring to negative and unconcerned.

Burnout can occur when caregivers don’t get the help they need, or if they try to do more than they are able—either physically or financially. Caregivers who are “burned out” may experience fatigue, stress, anxiety, and depression.

Many caregivers also feel guilty if they spend time on themselves rather than on their ill or elderly loved ones. It is critical that adult children who provide caregiving get the support and help they need to weather the storm.

How Can We Afford This?

The question should be reframed to, “How can we not afford this?”

Unfortunately, the cost of in-home care or personal care is typically more than many families can afford, and government assistance isn’t always there.

Come together in person as a family and have an honest discussion on what each person can contribute. If the numbers still don’t work, figure out what each person can sacrifice to make care more affordable.

In the end, a family moderator specializing in these situations may help bring a resolution. Seek the advice of an elder law attorney.

Strategies to keep your nest happy when it shifts from empty to refilled Written by CLAIRE YEZBAK FADDEN

Baby boomer parents are confronting a new boom — the return of their adult children to the nest. The 1960s community of free spirits has spawned a generation of boomerang kids, many who are unable or unwilling to cut the parental tether.

According to a Pew Research Center study, nearly one-in-three parents say an adult child has moved back home in the past few years because of economic conditions. High student loan debt, lowpaying or nonexistent jobs, and the high cost of living lead the list of reasons.

Whatever the motivation, empty nesters are increasingly finding their bedrooms (and their garages) full.

rough patch. To make this temporary return to the nest work to everyone’s satisfaction, however, it requires a bit of planning.

If you’re wondering where to start, consider theses suggestions.

Great Expectations Before the first suitcase comes through the door or boxes are stored in your garage, discuss what each of you expects from this revised living arrangement.

“You want this to be a purposeful decision, not just a casual arrangement,” says financial advisor Derrick Kinney. “Ask your child why she’s come to live with you. Help her articulate to you what she truly needs.

Maybe it’s guidance in helping finding a job, or your counsel on another area.”

Susan Kuczmarski, Ed.D., agrees.

“This is the time to step back and establish more of a peer-to-peer relationship with your adult children,” says Kuczmarski. In other words, view

What’s Their Plan?

Discuss your child’s short- and long-term goals. Does he want to start a career and save money, prepare for graduate school, or take a break from everything?

“Your child has moved back home because they don’t have any other options or their first choices didn‘t work out,” says Kuczmarski, the mother of three adult sons. “Help him develop a time table to achieve his goal.”

Part of that plan should include a job-hunting section. According to Kuczmarski, it’s possible your college graduate hasn’t learned how to look for a job the right way.

“Don’t find him a job, but ask questions … be a sounding board,” she advises. “Play the role of placement counselor, and help him get over being uncomfortable about the job search.

Give him leads to follow, encourage him to talk to peers about how they found their job. Remind him that in-person networking and LinkedIn can be some of the best ways to get the word out that you’re looking for work.”

Have a family meeting to set clear expectations, write them down, and have both sides sign it, suggests Kinney.

“Then your child will thrive in developing independence, building confidence, and will be equipped to move on. Put a timeframe on your agreement,” he adds. “Say: ‘This is for 90 days and then we’ll evaluate how well it’s working for both sides.’”

House Rules Having your adult child move back home requires adjustment on everyone’s part. You’ve gotten used to not planning dinner. Maybe your husband is fond of hanging around the house in his boxers.

Whatever the reason for your child’s return, he will still have family obligations and household chores.

Someone still has to take out the trash.

To preserve the family harmony, sanity, and dignity, Kuczmarski suggests that you mutually generate and mutually agree upon a new set of rules.

“Have your child pick a couple chores to be responsible for. I encourage transcending gender—daughters can do car-related, yard-related, or tool-related chores. Sons can cook, clean, and do laundry.”

Discuss whether she can have dates over for dinner. What’s the sleeping arrangement if she has a friend spend the night? If your boomerang child wants to be out all night, is he expected to phone or text home?

Common courtesy and mutual respect will assist in the process of laying down house rules that put your mind at ease.

Money, Money The most successful situations have set the financial boundaries in advance.

Discuss the terms by which your son or daughter will live at home again, advises Kinney.

“You don’t want to become the financial Pez dispenser for your children,” he says, “so that any time a handout is needed you automatically click ‘cash out.’”

According to Kinney, in situations where a formal agreement hasn’t been reached, the outcome is typically frustrating and unpleasant.

“Mom or Dad feels taken advantage of and the relationship sours. Instead of bailing your child out, use this opportunity to develop a financial plan,” he says. “Through budgeting, he’ll learn how to pay down debt and avoid new debt.”

Charging Rent?

For some parents, the mere mention of charging rent draws outrage. Other parents feel that requiring rent—even a minimal amount—is needed preparation

for living independently. According to the Pew Research Center, 48 percent of boomerang children have paid rent to their parents and nearly 90 percent say they help with household expenses.

“Asking your children to pay money should be based on their situation,” Kinney says. “If they’re using this time to get back on their feet, perhaps it isn’t necessary to add an additional financial burden. But if your child hasn’t demonstrated responsibility, insisting on paying rent, even a small amount, may be a good idea.”

can strain your nest egg. Adult children have decades to build their financial security, while you may be only a few years away from your retirement date.

Ironically, if you are not careful, you could end up financially dependent on them.

“It’s very important for parents not to run their home by guilt, but instead have guts,” says Kinney. “I see many clients who say to their kids: ‘OK come live with me.’ I encourage them to consider how that decision might negatively affect their lifestyle. Unlike when you’re a student, no one gives out loans for retirement.”

“You’re not the only parents whose kid decided to move back home,” reminds Kuczmarski. “In addition to the financial consumption that increases, parents need to know it’s not forever. Go out on your weekly date. Get out of the house. Keep your friendships active.”

Happy Horizons Whatever arrangement you and your adult child agree to, stick to it. Studies show when both sides hold to their agreements and continue to respect one another, there will be fewer problems.

If things start to unravel, call a family meeting to discuss expectations and boundaries.

nostalgia auto enthusiast makes his mark with custom vehicles Written by ROCHELLE A. SHENK

If you’re an auto enthusiast who’s visited cars shows like those hosted by Carlisle Events, one of Steve Pretz’s custom vehicles may have caught your eye. The Somerset-area man has created several unique vehicles, including a stylized trike.

The seed for this passion was planted in his youth. Growing up he liked to put a motor on anything from a bicycle to a lawn mower.

“I started building hot rods and trikes in the ’70s,” Pretz says.

His enthusiasm for motors and vehicles has led to a career as a mechanic, and he’s even had his own garage.

“I’ll work on anything and everything, from a weedwacker to

heavy equipment,” he states.

Pretz has fostered an interest in cars in his four daughters—Heather, Holly, April, and Jessica. They’ve not only helped him with some of his custom creations, but they’ve also accompanied

“I’m really proud of them and have told people that they’ve helped me with my cars. Some guys don’t believe women can look good in a bikini and turn a wrench,” he says lightheartedly.

Although he’s been creating trikes for a number of years, his most recent endeavor was created with twin daughters Heather and Jessica. It served as the girls’ senior project and is the result of a two-year effort.

The project to construct the trike began in 2005 and is a conglomeration of different parts.

“We found some parts in junkyards, and when people in the area found out about the project, some of them

donated parts,” he explains.

The tubular frame was custom built

by Pretz. The front end, rear end, and transmission is from a ’76 Freightliner.

The Cummins 400 motor and 13-speed transmission is from an Autocar truck, a purpose-built, heavy-duty vehicle built in Hagerstown, Ind. The steering wheel and steering box are from an International truck. The fuel tank and gauges are from an old Mack truck that had done duty on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

As the family was constructing the trike, Pretz says that he caught an episode of “Monster Garage” in which Jesse James (the show’s host) was building a trike.

“The front end looked just like ours,” he recalls.

While building the trike was a lengthy process, Pretz says that getting it licensed and insured was onerous.

It took nearly 18 months to get it licensed by PennDOT. He explains that it’s licensed as a motorcycle trike since it has three wheels on the ground. He worked with 14 different insurance companies before finding one that would insure it.

But, he says that it was all worth it—“It’s fun to drive it around or to different car shows.”

Pretz and his daughters recently completed a four-year project on a ’38 Chevy truck. He says that the project took so long because it came “out of a barn and was in a million pieces when

I bought it.” This street rod has the appearance of a pickup but it sits lower and is four-wheel drive.

“I rolled a ’92 F-10 frame and motor and a four-wheel drive system under the Chevy. It has all the original body parts and interior,” he says.

He’s planning on taking the ’38 Chevy to Carlisle for this year’s truck show.

“Most of the projects we do, we try to stay ‘old school.’ We use older vehicles so we don’t have to buy that many specialized tools. Also, the newer vehicles have a lot of components that either contain or synchronize with computers.

“We try to keep our costs reasonable,” he explains. “It didn’t take a lot of special tools to build any of these vehicles; you can do it on

a tight budget.”

The family is currently working on a ’53 Ford F-100, a project that Pretz estimates will take two years to complete. He says that the burgundycolored truck is a project that he’s doing for his wife. He plans to put a 429 engine in it from a ’67 Cadillac.

Like the Chevy, it had been stored in a barn, but unlike the ’38 Chevy, this vehicle had a good paint job (even though it was last painted in the ’70s) when it was purchased. That’s why he feels it will take less time to complete.

So, keep an eye out at this year’s Carlisle truck show for Pretz’s ’38 Chevy, and perhaps in a year or two, you’ll also catch a glimpse of the finished ’53 Ford. )))

His artistic inventiveness mimics a pot simmering on the back burner of the stove, constantly bubbling with creative energy. storyboard artist, Roda describes himself as “an illustrator with a forte for the humorous cartoon,” whose mission is to create “visually appealing and engaging images” that evoke smiles, laughter, and appreciation, all while “providing me,” he says, “with a nice living for my family.”

Roda’s artistic propensity surfaced early on.

“I remember drawing a sailboat when I was about 5,” says Roda, “and my grandmother telling my parents, ‘This boy has talent.’”

Later, he says Jack Davis, creator of Mad Magazine, “became an idol.”

In grade school, he says, “I was the one always looking out the window and drawing on my paper.” His artistic renderings eventually got him excused from class to create seasonal bulletin boards in the school hallways.

He also tells a story about his high school days where he applied his creativity to “work the system,” wheedling his way out of math classes in order to spend extra periods in the art room at Lancaster Catholic High.

After serving in the Navy and then graduating from York Academy of Arts in commercial art and illustration, Roda took a job in Baltimore, Md., with a package design studio.

This was prior to the computer technology and sophisticated software that drives commercial illustration today, so he remembers using the traditional artist tools of watercolors and magic markers to render his mockup designs for the company’s staff

Roda’s next employment opportunity brought him back to Lancaster with Godfrey Advertising, where he further honed his skills as their art director and illustrator for 15 years.

Meanwhile, Roda continued to grow his professional presence. He recalls a pivotal moment when he used some vacation time and ventured into New York City to drum up interest in his work.

From the street, he phoned an art director at Field and Stream magazine and was told to come right up—“He said he’d give me 15 minutes to show my work,” says Roda. He flipped through his proverbial black portfolio with the clear plastic sleeves, and the editor liked what he saw. Roda landed a humorous illustration in the regional section of the magazine and went on to win larger assignments from Field and Stream.

That led to an assignment from Young & Rubicam, one of the big agencies in New York, for a TWA ad promoting a flight between Florida and New York, which ran in the Miami Herald.

Roda says that getting these assignments increased his credibility, thus enabling him to acquire artists’ representatives in New York City and Philadelphia.

In 1988 he had set a five-year goal to be self-employed; in 1994 he set up shop in his own basement as Bot Roda Studio.

He says, “I embraced technology and got a Mac. I had to be my own IT guy and was on the phone for tech support a lot in the early days. I had to work out a billing package; my wife, Joanne, helped manage the financial aspects of the business.”

Roda says he was eventually making twice his previous salary but adds he was working 60-70 hours a week to meet client deadlines.

Working solo proved to be a great run. Roda says he was around more while his two children were growing up. He made great connections and achieved industry recognition. He was part of a multitude of diverse projects, having generated artwork for companies such as GE, Pepsi, BlueCross BlueShield, Conrail, American Red Cross, Giant

Foods, and UGI Corporation, in addition to sports franchises, including the Philadelphia Flyers, the LA Lakers, the Baltimore Orioles, and the Boston Celtics.

Because of a former hobby, his experiences as a Civil War re-enactor led to his involvement with Turner Pictures as a storyboard artist for the feature films Gettysburg and its prequel Gods and Generals. His ability to diversify is what he says has given him a competitive edge.

The tools Roda used at the start— “the markers, brushes, watercolor paints, ink and illustration boards—“are

a far cry from the Wocam Centiq 24 HD and pressure-sensitive pen he uses today at his desk with Weber Advertising & Marketing.

In May of 2015, Roda sold his business to Weber Advertising & Marketing and came on board with them as both illustrator and account executive.

What prompted this decision? Roda says it was a combination of factors.

As a result of a slow-down in work that began about a year before his transition, an increasing sense of isolation that selfemployment can produce, and recent reminders that life is short, he chose a new path once again. Roda says Weber

is a good fit, and he’s enjoying his new office and colleagues.

Roda says he’d like to eventually make time to create fine artwork, maybe for gallery display, such as landscapes and realistic and impressionistic pieces.

But hands down, his favorite creations are his signature caricatures where he captures the spirit and likeness of his subjects with the basic handheld tools on an illustration board.

Taking into account the thousands of illustrations he’s generated throughout his professional career, it looks like Roda’s grandmother knew what she was talking about, all those years ago. )))

Joe Novak knows what military sacrifice means.

“My father was killed in Korea, at the Chosin Reservoir,” says the Harrisburg native. “I was 6 or 7 months old.” His stepfather saw service at Omaha Beach, at Normandy, during World War II with the Mighty 98th.

And Novak, born in 1951, joined the United States Marine Corps at 16. It wasn’t long before he found himself in Vietnam, where has was assigned as a demolitionist. As a sergeant, Novak served with 1st Marine Division, 1st Battalion, 1st Platoon, Charlie Company, attached to 1st Recon.

Due to his demolition work, Novak earned the nickname “Rocket Recon”

from his fellow Marines. He later shorted it to “Recon,” and he’s still known by that name today. But the name “Rocket Recon” lives on as the name of a cabin cruiser he just restored.

Novak, who today remains active with the Vietnam Veterans of America Michael J. Novosel Medal of Honor Capital Area Chapter 542, Harrisburg, also participates in the Central Pennsylvania Vietnam Round Table, a lecture and discussion group.

His work with the 542 is a tribute to a war that some Americans—even veterans of the conflict—might prefer to forget. Novak keeps the legacy alive.

It started when he joined the Marine Corps, and he remembers spending his 17th birthday at Parris Island, the famed and fearsome Marine boot camp.

“I landed in ’Nam two days before Christmas 1969,” Novak remembers.

It was a trip he made by way of San Diego’s Camp Pendleton and Okinawa, Japan.

Novak’s job was to destroy enemy targets.

“My team was credited with blowing up a Viet Cong hospital,” Novak says.

What his team destroyed wasn’t a traditional hospital full of nurses and children. It was more of a place

where the Viet Cong patched up their wounded, and it shared a mountain with an ammunition dump. Novak says he’s not sure anyone was even in the enemy medical facility the day the Marines took it out, but the ammo dump that was stored in it had to go.

This demolition made the pages of the military newspaper Stars and Stripes in June 1970.

Such control of weaponry would seem to give Novak an upper hand in

the war. But it didn’t in a land where nothing or nobody seemed to be what they were.

“You didn’t know who you were fighting,” recalls Novak. “You’ve got little kids strapped with ammo.”

One way to relax for those who served in all branches of the military was to see the famous USO shows, starring the likes of Bob Hope and Ann Margret.

“I never got to see any of that!”

Novak says with a laugh. He never even went on rest and relaxation leaves. He preferred duty over playtime, sticking with his comrades.

It seems hard to believe, but “R and R” had risks of its own. Some soldiers went to places such as Tokyo or Sydney and got into trouble, either by going absent without leave or meeting up with crime that left them dead.

Novak did visit Vietnam’s famous China Beach, where you were allowed to carry a weapon. The biggest hazard

there, he says, was keeping sand out of your gun.

Novak was wounded a few times, and one time didn’t even involve bullets—at first. The young Marine was felled by malaria.

“They sent a basket, for a jungle extraction,” Novak says. The basket lifted him into a helicopter that would take him to the hospital ship USS Sanctuary. “[Then] the chopper got hit!” Novak says, but the helicopter made it to the ship.

The crew of the Sanctuary were expecting a sick man, and instead, “here comes this Marine, all full of holes,” he jokes. He had to have shrapnel removed, which is still coming to the surface and being removed to this day.

Another time Novak was wounded, “[We were] somewhere we weren’t supposed to be,” he says, alluding to secret missions in enemy territory.

while he was working on a demolition container called FoGas. “A rocket landed,” he remembers, “and it blew me away.” It was the event that sent him back to the States.

Novak’s trip home was a complicated one.

Due to his wounds, he was transported stateside to Walter Reed Army Medical Center near Washington, D.C., in 1970, and later to a veterans’ hospital in Philadelphia that Novak refers to as “The Morgue.”

At one point, Novak was actually listed as “killed in action,” which caused his family great distress.

He spent months in a body cast.

Novak wanted to continue to serve, but ultimately, he was honorably discharged in Washington in 1973 after a two-year medical leave.

There were other painful sides to coming home from Vietnam. Novak remembers the stateside criticism of the conflict.

“I was known as a bum [because of my service],” Novak says.

In addition, Novak had been exposed to Agent Orange, a poisonous defoliant used to clear jungles, but it afflicted many American soldiers as well. To this day, Novak still gets treatments for skin issues and severe post-traumatic stress disorder.

“In sun and snow, I actually bleed,” he says of his skin.

Though he’s looking forward to his trips on his cabin cruiser, Novak has to either remain shaded or go night fishing with his buddies on board.

Novak has visited Washington’s Vietnam Veterans Memorial, though it took him a while to do it.

“I couldn’t go until 1995,” he says.

Today, he visits with fellow veterans, and “I’ve got eight names on ‘the Wall,’” meaning eight fallen comrades whose names are inscribed on the monument.

At home, a hilltop house in a quiet

setting outside Harrisburg, Novak has a room dedicated to the war, filled with memorabilia from Vietnam.

Novak is retired and devotes his time to Chapter 542.

“After the war, it was hard to find a job,” he admits. But he eventually went to work for Uniroyal and then he went into the property-maintenance business.

He sees a parallel between Vietnam and today’s wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, where hostile action can come from anywhere.

“The world hasn’t changed much,” Novak says with regret.

But he sees a positive in the way those who serve are treated today.

“It’s totally different. Today, the people are backing the veteran or the soldier,” Novak says.

Though he still deals with shrapnel pain, PTSD, and the aftereffects of Agent Orange, Novak says, “It’s a long road, but I refuse to give up … It’s been a long road, and it ain’t over.” )))

What is the best memory you have from your childhood?

My memories of childhood include spending a lot of time with my grandparents at their home in Lancaster.

We lived five blocks from them on South Queen Street. Grandpa Kile was the business manager for the Queen Dairy in Lancaster.

My dad was a deliveryman for the Queen and drove the first diesel truck in the city that was for delivery. Not long before that, the dairy used horse-drawn wagons for deliveries, and when my dad rode along as a kid he said that the horses knew exactly which roads to take and where and when to stop for feed and water.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

When I was around 12, I began fooling around with old radios, buying them at house auctions, searching for tubes at old radio-TV repair shops and rebuilding them so that they worked just like they were new.

That led to an interest in radio broadcasting, which I pursued through college and into my early career years.

When I was 17, I noticed an ad for an announcer trainee in the Lancaster New Era and applied for the position at WGALAM and FM in Lancaster. That led to a job working weekends as an announcer,

inserting the local commercials in the Phillies games, reading the news and weather, and doing regular announcer shifts playing music and trying to be topical.

What is your fondest memory from elementary school (grades K–8)?

Hambright Elementary School had an annual talent show, and my friends and I decided to perform a lip sync routine to “The Monster Mash,” a song that you still hear on the radio at Halloween time.

I dressed up as a vampire and my two friends, Betsy Brown and Linda Morrin, wore sheets over their heads and were the dancing ghosts behind me. I remember it going very well, with me lip-syncing along to “I was working in the lab, late one night, when my eyes beheld a terrible sight,” etc.

What was the first thing you remember buying with money from “your own paycheck”?

Working at Two Guys in the camera department fueled my interest in photography, and the first real investments I made were an enlarger and chemicals for the darkroom I built in my parents’ basement. The chemicals always smelled bad, and unfortunately the darkroom was very near where Mom did the wash, so I had to plan my developing to allow plenty of time for the air to clear.

What are you most proud of?

This one is easy. I am most proud of the family that Zoa, my wife of 32 years, and I built together. Prior to the kids coming along, Zoa had a great career as a local TV reporter for WLYH-TV and WGAL-TV. We have two children: daughter Meredith, 27, Web editor for Entertainment Tonight, who lives in Los Angeles, and son Taylor, 24, is a graphic designer who lives in Millersville, Pa.
