Bladsy 4 Vrydag 9 September 2022
Johnson was referring to mining companies “from countries which do not have the same regulatory requirements that we have. Sometimes they seem to be able to do things – such as back artisanal miners to do tremendous environmental damage using very unhealthy mining Mainstreamingpractices.”artisanal mining
to Orion Minerals CEO Errol Smart, who is also the Minerals Council SouthAfrica’s executive for the promotion of junior mining, “… illegal mining here is not junior mining, it is mega-scale corruption and Whatcrime”.started out involving isolated groups of ‘zama-zamas’ (‘people who keep on trying’) working on small operations on alluvial diamond diggings and old, shallow gold mines on the Witwatersrand some 10 years ago, has evolved into large-scale mining operations. These involve gangs of illegally operating miners working underground in various deep-level Free State gold mines for months at a time.
The answer lies in corruption, as highlighted by Lorimer, but also in the lack of political will by governments to tackle the problem, as illegal mining provides a living – albeit dangerous and illegal – to millions of impoverished citizens.
That’s an issue that gets huge attention from NGOs, but the underlying crucial issue – the elephant in the room, if you like, that few are willing to come to terms with – is the financial loss being caused by the illegal Thisminers.kind of mining is essentially theft from the mining companies that hold mining rights over the ground being invaded. It is also theft from the host nation in lost taxes, royalties and foreign exchange earnings from the export of the commodities, which are invariably moved out of the county Gilbertsonillegallytoldthe 2022 Mining Indaba that “the mineral resources get sterilised because, where the pits have been dug, some 40% to 50% of the resource gets left behind but it is now too dangerous to access or it is no longer economically viable to mine because 50% to 60% of the value has disappeared.
“The resource is also squandered.Africa has lost billions of dollars from its natural resources from the evaporation of gemstones from the continent being mined by artisanal or illegal miners, and they are sold for a fraction of the true international value … like 10c on the dollar.”
Continue on pg 5 llegal miners (Zama Zamas) are raided on September 30, 2021 in Randfontein, South Africa. Operation O Kae Molao was led by SAPS
Last year, Gilbertson told Miningmx that the extent of the illegal ruby trade was difficult to assess, but it was huge. He said Gemfields had sold about $620m worth of rubies since it started operations in Mozambique, but he
The municipality is doing nothing – they are certainly being paid off. The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy has an office 9.2km away and they are doing nothing.”
ILLEGALmining is a huge and growing problem across much of Africa but it seems to be particularly prevalent in South Africa, where it is getting rapidly larger and more organised in Accordingscale.

Africa’s Governments Are Powerless To Control Illegal Mining
It is not just SouthAfrica that is battling this problem; it is rampant throughout the major mining jurisdictions south of the Sahara.
According to reports,Thungela has been to court multiple times and won interdicts to stop the illegal miners from operating, but the SouthAfrican Police Service has not enforced these court orders and the mining has
Petra Diamonds’ major tailings recovery operation at Kimberley had been invaded by more than 1,000 illegal miners and, despite both Petra and previous owner De Beers having obtained court orders to stop this illegal activity over several years, nothing had been done. Despite the Mineral Council’s pleas, it is clear there is little being done to meaningfully combat illegal mining. The reason, according to Democratic Alliance shadow minister for mineral resources James Lorimer, is corruption, plain and simple.
“The police are doing nothing –they are probably being paid off.
Johnson’s complaint is sure to be backed up by Gemfields CEO Sean Gilbertson given the group’s experience at its Montepuez ruby mine in Mozambique, which has been badly affected by illegal Muchmining.of these operations, according to Gilbertson, is being carried out by “illegal syndicates” that bring in “vulnerable and impoverished people from faraway towns in neighbouring provinces and countries” to do the Gilbertsonmining.
comments that “any multinational or listed company which allowed people to work in the conditions that are prevalent in artisanal mining would be lambasted for health and safety risks and environmental damage”.
Why has illegal mining gotten so out of hand?
Illegal miners also receive support from institutions like the United Nations and international humanitarian organisationsnon-government(NGOs),which have protested against efforts to control illegal mining that might affect the human rights of the miners. For a company that is listed on a developed world stock exchange, this can be extremely Thisproblematic.articlefirst appeared inThe MiningYearbook 2022 which can be accessed free of charge here According>> to the Minerals Council, some 20% of the world’s gold production comes from artisanal mining, which has “become integral to the economies of many mining countries in the developing world”.The Council also points out that artisanal mining is “plagued with exploitation of children and women. InAfrica it is estimated that about half of artisanal miners are women and 10% are children.”
“We call onAfrican governments to choose their partners carefully. Choose the partners that are not going to make short-term promises that they may not keep.”
Clive Johnson, CEO of Canadian gold mining company B2Gold, which produces the majority of its million ounces of gold from the Fekola mine in Mali, told the CapeTown Mining Indaba: “The kind of things we are seeing in Mali right now in artisanal mining to the north of where we are is devastating to the local river and the potential rehabilitation of agricultural areas.
Lorimer told the Junior Indaba conference, held in Johannesburg in early June, that he had visited the eMalahleni illegal coal mining site. “This has been completely ignored for the past six months. Nothing is being done about it and it’s quite clear there’s a lot of crookery going on.
Just how bad the situation is was underscored inApril, when the extent of an illegal mechanised mining operation onThungela Resources’Khwezela Colliery Kromdraai site near eMalahleni in Mpumalanga was exposed publicly. It only came to light after a serious toxic water spill from the site, for whichThungela was initially blamed, but the company then revealed it had been caused by a major illegal mining operation on ground which Thungela was rehabilitating after it had been mined.
Thiscontinued.isnothing new: the Minerals Council sounded a warning back in 2016 that illegal mining was getting out of control. Then president of the Council Mike Teke commented that the body was “cooperating and working with the Department of Mineral Resources and the SouthAfrica Police MineralsService”.Council security coordinator Neil Metzer said at the time the issue of illegal mining had been taken up “at the highest level of the country’s security Atstructures”.thattime,
The police are doing nothing –they are probably being paid off. The municipality is doing nothing – they are certainly being paid off.
This is like allowing drug dealers to continue selling drugs if they obtain qualificationspharmaceuticalandpaytax on their earnings – it just won’t happen.
“It also assumes that platoons of zama-zamas will miraculously stop their illegal activities overnight, undertake formal training, use PPE [personal protective equipment] and pay taxes and royalties. This is like allowing drug dealers to continue selling drugs if they obtain pharmaceutical qualifications and pay tax on their earnings – it just won’t Therehappen.”aretwoprobable outcomes of the policy, one of which is already apparent, says Scholes.
The first is that it will become the responsibility of mining companies to conduct training and equipping of artisanal miners operating on their properties, at huge cost. The second outcome, which is already present in communities, is an expectation that there will be services provision for whoever is on company property “This short-sighted creation of expectations will cause even more problems for mining companies, which are already battling to manage communities who look to mining companies to satisfy basic needs that a failed state should have provided in the first instance,” Scholes says. “Gwede Mantashe [the mines and energy minister] and his DMRE must put SouthAfrica before the ANC and bin the policy. Start by intervening decisively to stop criminality in the mining sector and only when the all-toofrequent tragic incidents no longer occur, can the notion of promoting smaller-scale mining be pursued.”

Our interventions can be straightforward and simple: capacity building, optimising logistics and giving them a social licence [to operate].”
But that’s easier said than done: SouthAfrica’s Department of Mineral Resources & Energy last year published a draft artisanal and small-scale mining policy that has been rejected out of hand by mining legal expert Hulme Scholes, who declared it to be unrealistic and unworkable.
“The policy is a fantasy,” says Scholes. “With a stroke of the legislature’s pen, it intends to magically create vast valuable open-cast areas where artisanal miners can profitably mine, as previously mined areas are excluded to prevent artisanal miners from environmentalattractingliabilities.

Chairperson of the Council, Collin Louw, says the San Community often feels excluded from the tourism value chain, even though many tourism campaigns offer trips to the areas where the San people live. He says the San people will derive more economic benefits from the tourism sector, if more tourism campaigns include them in their programmes. Louw was speaking at the launch ofTourism Month, at the !Khwa ttu Nature Reserve, nearYzerfontein, on the West Coast. “We have trained guides. We have the Drakensberg, we have the Cederberg.

In his final years he increasingly turned to literary concerns: a book about Setswana proverbs and folktales, and a translation of Shakespeare into Setswana. These works bear testimony to his profound and visionary engagement in a dialogue between the oral and the written, Setswana and English, the past and the Apresent.fittingtributePlaatjediedof pneumonia in 1932. taste – not realised in his lifetime – of what an integrated SouthAfrica might mean and how South Africans might learn from each Lifelongother and life-wide learning Plaatje was an indefatigable selfdirected learner throughout his life. He practised lifelong learning long before it became a policy buzzword. In his various professions – post office messenger, court interpreter, journalist, politician, author, translator – he found and learnt from mentors, books and life experiences. He made the knowledge his own to share with others.Almost instinctively, he combined the role of public educator with everything else that he did. In his first adult job in Kimberley as post office messenger, one of the few positions available to educated Africans in the Cape Colony, Plaatje learnt the importance of bearing the message from sender to receiver. From this he perhaps gained insight into the power and importance of the word in connecting people.

A Plaatjepioneerwas also a pioneer of African independent journalism. He launched and edited a number of newspapers such as Koranta ea Becoana (1901-1906).These newspapers published articles in English and Setswana, targeting the country’s small minority of mission-educatedAfricans. His titles gave this group a public voice and educated them about current Plaatje’affairs.s newspapers also attacked unjust laws and racial discrimination in the Cape Colony and later the Union of SouthAfrica. He also wrote very widely in English medium newspapers like the Diamond FieldsAdvertiser and The Star, educating their white readerships about black experiences and perspectives.
his own tribal and religious identities to embrace a vision of a common SouthAfrica. He stood up against the forces of white supremacy and segregation and advocated for a united, inclusive nation based on justice, equality and the rule of law All of this during the darkest of days and at great personal cost.
SolomonTshekisho Plaatje was born 140 years ago in what is today SouthAfrica’s Free State province. When he was 40 years old, he published Native Life in SouthAfrica, his great expose of the ruinous effects of the 1913 Natives’LandAct.This legislation almost completely stripped black SouthAfricans of the right to own land.Plaatje, known as Sol, came from a family that had been associated with Christian missions for three generations. He was also a proud member of the Barolong clan and treasured hisAfrican identity and culture. He lived through times of tumultuous change in SouthAfrica, including theAnglo Boer War and the creation of the Union of South HeAfrica.transcended

In honour of Native Life’s centenary, it’s worth revisiting Plaatje’s legacy as one of his country’s greatest public intellectuals. It’s also a good opportunity to reflect on how a man with only four years of formal schooling became a brilliant public educator who promoted a common and inclusive SouthAfricanness.
Aprodigious polyglot, Plaatje used the limited opportunities at Pniel to increase his repertoire. One day he overheard the missionary’s wife, Elizebeth Westphal, speaking English to a lady in the kitchen. He said to her “I want to be able to speak English and Dutch and German as you do”. She gave him extra lessons and introduced him to English literature and classical music. He mastered other South African languages as he encountered them. During his brief time at school in Kimberley, Plaatje was exposed to a very diverse spectrum of children from the mining town.
He continued this “in-between” role when appointed court interpreter in Mafeking in 1898.The job was about more than just translating. It involved mediating the world of the English and Dutch magistrates and prosecutors toAfrican plaintiffs and vice versa. He made possible, through his voice and person and the virtue of listening, a dialogue between these worlds.

Early Plaatjeyearsisbest known as a leader of the SouthAfrican Native National Congress, which later became the now-governingAfrican National Congress (ANC). He was also a novelist and journalist. But many may not know that teaching was his first job – and enduring Hevocation.wasjust 14 or 15 when he was appointed as “pupil-teacher” at the Pniel mission station where he’d completed only three grades of school. He later finished another school year in the city of Kimberley Despite his limited formal schooling, Plaatje received what historianTim Couzens described as “the very best education”. His mother, grandmother and aunts steeped him in Setswana culture and oral tradition. They sparked his fascination withAfrican history, folklore and proverbs, which he later evocatively captured in his 1929 novel Mhudi. It was the first English language novel published by a black SouthAfrican.
Plaatje’s journalism gave him a national profile and he was elected as Secretary General of the newly formed SouthAfrican Native National Congress (SANNC) in 1912.Aresponse to the whitedominated Union of 1910, the SANNC unitedAfricans across tribal, regional and language divisions. Later to become the ANC, it gave them a national political voice and identity Plaatje travelled to England as part of the congress’s delegation to protest against the LandAct. He joined a second delegation in 1919, where he visited North America as well. On these visits, he addressed hundreds of gatherings to present the “native Hiscase”.publication in 1916 of Native Life in SouthAfrica was part of this campaign. This and his travels took his role as public educator to an international audience.Although these delegations were ultimately unsuccessful, they laid roots for the later anti-apartheid movement. Plaatje returned from his travels disappointed by the failure of the delegations to effect change and heavily in debt. He resumed his journalism and travelled the country showing films – a novel technology – to blackAfrican audiences. These showed the progress that blackAmericans had made in politics and education. Again, this was an effort to educate and connect people. But, in a rapidly urbanising and industrialising SouthAfrica, Plaatje’s messages of educational self-help and moral improvement did not resonate as they once had.

The 911 had a five-speed manual transmission, a 2.7-liter engine, capable of producing 210 hp (213 ps) and 188 lb.-ft. (255 Nm) of torque. It also had a top speed of 152 mph (245 km/h) and did 0-62 mph (100 km/h) in 5.5 seconds. Now circling back to the man the Porsche impressed, he now lives in Gauteng, which is the smallest province by land in SouthAfrica. On a daily basis, he usually drives what looks like a 1995 3door Honda Civic. When he steps out of it, he painfully gets around by using a cane.

At first glance, Barry is the embodiment of the sweet elder next door that always smiles and waves whenever he sees his neighbors. However, hidden away in darkness within his garage, lies a beast, waiting to roar and pounce with every opportunity it gets. I’m talking about his heavily modified 2012 Nissan GT-R (R35). When he bought it over nine years ago, it was the DBA model with the V6 3.8-liter engine producing 530 hp (537 ps) and 451 lb-ft (612 Nm) of torque. He liked it in the begging, but two years in, it wasn't fulfilling his need for speed anymore. So he had it shipped overseas to a custom tuning shop where it sat on the operating table for over six months. When it came back to him, it was a completely different monsterIthada4.1-liter engine, they changed the rods, pistons, the valve springs as well, the gearbox was completely overhauled, and the list goes on. Barry claims that the car tops out at around 1,200 hp, but the tuning company told him it could even handle 2,000 hp. All that power had to be unleashed somewhere, so Barry could check the 200 mph (322 km/h) drive off his bucket list. He couldn’t have picked a better place for it. The Upington International Airport in SouthAfrica. The runway he chose is one of the biggest in the world, measuring 3 miles (4.9 km) in length. To get a general idea, your usual garden variety runway length starts at 1.14mi (1.83 km).The Upington runway is at least four times that. The conditions that day were perfect. It all seemed like a Hollywood director scripted it, but there’s no fiction in this story. At 75 years of age, Barry Bigwood got in his 1,200-hp Nissan GT-R (R35) and floored it like never before in his entire life. He didn't just get to 200 mph (322 km/h), but he reached a blazing 218 mph (351 km/h) top speed. Way to go Barry! After fulfilling his dream, there were no tears on his face, no big dramatic scene shot in slow motion. Only Barry with the sun in his eyes saying, “not bad, now next thing, we’ll probably try this in a Bugatti.”

TheTrans-Kalahari railway project involves the construction of a new line from Botswana to Walvis Bay in Namibia. In addition, it involves a complete rehabilitation of theTransNamib line. The rehabilitation works will be carried out from Gobabis, through the capital, Windhoek, to the new port at Walvis Bay. The 1,500km railway line will traverse the vast semi-arid, sandy savannah of the Kalahari desert, hence the name “Trans-Kalahari railway”. It mirrors the existing Trans-Kalahari Highway or corridor that links Botswana to Walvis Bay. However, unlike the railway line, the corridor stretches 1,900km. It traverses Walvis Bay through Windhoek, Gaborone in Botswana, and Johannesburg to Pretoria in SouthAfrica. The project will be developed through a partnershippublic-privateapproachbased on a DBOOTcontractual arrangement. Under this arrangement, a developer undertakes the financing, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of the Uponproject.completion, theTransKalahari railway is expected to allow the export of up to 65 million tonnes of coal a year from Botswana through Walvis Bay As a result, this would unlock the value of coal mining in the South African country and power generation in the entire region. Moreover, the railway will expand freight capacity on congested transport corridors within the SouthernAfrican Development Community (SADC). It is also expected to provide greater access to global markets for other landlocked countries in the region. These countries include Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.constructionreviewonline.com
The construction of the US$ 9.5bnTrans-Kalahari railway that is aimed at connecting Botswana’s Mmamabula coal fields to Walvis Bay in Namibia is yet to commence. Plans for the implementation of the project first surfaced back in 2010.This is when the Governments of the two republics entered into a Memorandum of Understanding to facilitate its development. All FourSectorsyears later, the two governments signed a Bilateral Agreement on the development of the 1500km line. The agreement also covered the development of the rails associated coal storage, conveying, loading, and other ancillary facilities. This same year, Leevi Hungamo revealed that tendering of the feasibility study for theTrans-Kalahari railway construction was expected to begin. Hungamo was the then National Planning Commission (NPC) Permanent Secretary in Namibia.According to him, the report would be ready by the following Meanwhile, yearthe two governments were working on logistics and setting up the project management office. InApril 2015, theTrans-Kalahari Railway (TKR) Project Management Office (PMO) finally opened in Windhoek. The office would spearhead the implementation of the project. In 2021, PCSB&SE expressed concern to the Botswana Railways (BR) over the delayed implementation of the railway project. PCSB&SE is the Parliamentary Committee on Statutory Bodies and State Enterprises in Botswana. However, nothing substantial was given in response to the concerns. BR through its CEO Leonard Makwinja said that the Ministry ofTransport and Communications was in a better position to address the concerns.

Volschenk explained that the disease caused serious skin infections and loss of wool as the Psoroptes ovis mites that cause the disease burrowed through the skin to feed on the sheep’s lymph and tissue fluids.
The first sign of the disease was sheep biting themselves to relief the intense itching caused by mite activity This was followed by the loss of wool or hair, and the appearance of wet and oozing spots on the skin. She advised producers to ensure that workers changed their clothes and shoes when moving from one flock to the next to prevent them from transmitting the mites between flocks.
As a controlled disease, outbreaks were monitored by the Department of Veterinary Services in terms of SouthAfrican legislation. All cases of suspected outbreaks needed to be reported to the nearest state veterinarian. Should the tests conducted by the department confirm sheep scab, the flock would be quarantined for at least six weeks, she said.
All vehicles entering and leaving the farm, as well as kraals and camps, also needed to be disinfected thoroughly, and the movement of people on the farm restricted. All new animals introduced to a farm also needed to be kept in isolation for at least 28 days. “This is a serious disease that could spell disaster for the Northern Cape’s sheep farmers. “We need the co-operation of all role players in the sheep production value chain to prevent the disease from spreading further Sheep scab is not a disease that should be trifled with,” Volschenk warned. About Sheep Scab Outbreak In The Northern Cape
At present, there were reports of outbreaks in the DeAar, Vosburg, Carnavon, Williston and Upington districts, with the farms where outbreaks occurred, as well as the adjoining farms, officially being placed under quarantine. “Sheep scab is extremely contagious. It is of vital importance for all sheep producers in the province to implement strict biosecurity measures on their farms to prevent the disease from “Strictspreading.access control and preventative measures are essential,” Julize Volschenk, operations official at the Northern Cape Red Meat Producers’ Organisation, (NCRPO) told Farmer’s AccordingWeeklytoher, it could be assumed that more than 1 000 sheep in the province had already been infected with the disease.

Wat sien ons in die lewe van Job? For God may speak in one way, or in another,Yet man does not perceive it. In a dream, in a vision of the night, When deep sleep falls upon men, While slumbering on their beds, Then He opens the ears of men,And seals their instruction. (Job 33:14-16). Infused knowledge is connected to union. We see this ability often in Jesus. With the woman at the well, Jesus knew her whole life story. Nothing was hidden from him. She was astonished! And many of the Samaritans of that city believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, “He told me all that I ever did.” (John 4:39).

Aim-listed Botswana Diamonds has been granted a five-year prospecting licence, until June 2027, on ground containing the Reivilo cluster of kimberlites in Barkley West, in the Northern Cape province of SouthAfrica. The licence is located about 110 km northeast of the actively producing Finsch diamond mine owned by Petra Diamonds. Exploration by the previous licence holder was reported to have delineated a cluster of three kimberlite pipes, with sizes of 3.1 ha, 1.7 ha and 0.9 ha all within a 250 m radius. Samples of the drilling core produced G10 and eclogitic garnets, which are the optimal indicators for diamondiferous kimberlites, Botswana Diamonds reported. The company has said it plans to review all the available data on Reivilo prior to finalising its exploration programme. “When the ground recently became available, we immediately applied for the area. Botswana managementDiamondshavelong been aware of the diamond potential of this ground, and so we are delighted to have finally been awarded this high-profile exploration ground,” Botswana Diamonds

ITHAS been almost four years since the Constitutional Court ruled that SouthAfricans have the right to consume cannabis in the privacy of their own homes, decriminalisingeffectivelythe personal use of cannabis. Since then, there have been important milestones that have enabled the emergence of SouthAfrica’s fledgling cannabis industry. In 2019, cannabidiol (CBD) was officially rescheduled a level 4 substance, meaning that all CBD-containing preparations were rescheduled and fully Inlegal.June 2021, the much anticipated Cannabis Master Plan was unveiled, detailing how cannabis can be incorporated into SouthAfrica’s business sector as part of government’s ongoing drive towards legalisation and commercialisation. Government has good reason to want to focus on this industry
Development estimates that the cannabis industry is worth an estimated R28 billion in South Africa and could create between 10,000 to 25,000 jobs across the sector There have, however, been some frustrations along the way as the enabling legislation has not been forthcoming, and the pace of change has been slower than anticipated. However, from the outset, Goodleaf had a clear sense of the opportunity and acted quickly, launching their CBD wellness and lifestyle brand within a year of the Constitutional Court ruling. In 2019, Goodleaf opened South Africa’s first premium CBD store in the heart of Cape Town’s city centre. Four years later, the brand has a strong premium product line, which includes oils, skincare topicals, sparkling flavoured water, natural vapes and powder sachets. The brand’s product range is available online and in major retailers across SouthAfrica, including Pick ‘n Pay, Spar, Checkers, Wellness Warehouse, Woolworths and Poetry and Vida e Caffè. From the start, Goodleaf’s intention was to create a South African-grown global cannabis brand. In less than four years, Goodleaf Wellness has gone from a budding start-up to firmly establishing itself as Africa’s leading vertically integrated cannabis operator, combining high-quality, lowcost cultivation and production with a world-class brand and distribution across SouthAfrica, the UK and Europe. Where to from here… There is no doubt the opportunity is there. Demand for cannabis products, and other plant-based wellness and beauty alternatives, will continue to grow as consumers become increasingly aware of the potential benefits of these products for their health and Thewell-being.brandsaw a big opportunity for SouthAfrica, given the country’s abundant sunshine and low cost production. SouthAfrica has an incredibly rich heritage of medicinal plants: think rooibos, moringa, marula, baobab and Kalahari melon. The soothing, moisturising, and antiinflammatory capacities of these plants echo those properties in CBD – making the combination a particularly powerful, organic product for skin vitality, which creates a compelling selling proposition. As the cannabis industry enters this exciting new phase, it is crucial that the sector does not lose the opportunity to create value right here in SouthAfrica. We must endeavour to not become another sector where Africa provides the raw product, but the real value is created in Europe or NorthAmerica. We have what it takes, let’s embrace it and not be afraid to act quickly, decisively and with the confidence that this is SouthAfrica’s opportunity not to be missed.

Warrant Officer Nomvuyo Makoloi said preliminary investigations revealed that three children, between the ages of eight and 12, went swimming in a water tank at the diamond mine. Makoloi said the mine is situated next to an informal “Onesettlement.boywas able to get out of the tank and reported the incident to the police. The police, with the assistance of community members, were able to retrieve the bodies of the two children, who were declared deceased on the scene. Sadly, the two deceased are believed to be siblings,” said Makoloi. The police extended their gratitude to the community members who assisted in the recovery of the two victims. The drownings got tongues wagging about the regulations governing operational and nonoperational mines in the area. It was revealed that the mine has not been operational but had permanent security guards stationed at the main gate. However, the other side of the mine was accessible after the fence was vandalised. Some community members questioned why the children were on the premises, while others wanted to know why the mine was left in that state after it was closed.
