Top Global Student Is Driven By Positive Thinking

“I cannot explain how grateful I am. Because of what Kolomela mine did for me, I can prosper and create a better life for my people.”These are the powerful words ofAnnie Hole, a top global student whose life of poverty and positive thinking was her driver to success.

Afourth- and final-year student in ClinicalTechnology, specialising in nephrology (kidneys) at the Central University ofTechnology in Bloemfontein,Annie received a Golden Key award and a Golden Key medal as the top student in ClinicalTechnology internationally

The Kumba Iron Ore Kolomela mine bursary changed her life. “I do not want to be poor again. I must be able to afford sanitary towels and go to bed with a full stomach. I get anxious and stressed when I think I am failing, as failing means that I shall be going back to poverty.”

My dream

“My dream is to be a successful businesswoman and to open my own dialysis practice. Every day people are diagnosed with kidney failure, and some believe it is the end of the world, whereas it is not.You can still live with kidney failure as long as you attend dialysis.”

Annie has already made good progress as a businesswoman –she started two small businesses calledAnnie Cosmetic andAnnieAtchar. She used a portion of her monthly food allowance to start the businesses.Annie Cosmetic, a registered business, is a beauty brand aimed at helping women be more confident. “And more is yet to come! I want to create job opportunities for the youth and give back to the community through these ventures,”Annie said.

Kolomela bursary changing lives

Annie chose a career in Clinical Technology as she always wanted to work in health science. Helping people is part of her makeup. “When I applied for ClinicalTechnology, I’d already done my research and knew it was what I wanted to do. I knew, however, that the only way to go to university was with the help of a bursary due to my family’s financial instability.”

Tips for learners and bursary holders

Focus on your books – matric results are very important and will determine your future. University requires focus and hard work - you need to know why you are there. Use the bursary funds wisely Study hard and smart. Ask for help if necessary

Attend classes. Choose your friends wisely, because they can significantly impact your life.
