Kolomela Supports Agricultural Seminar For Emerging Farmers
Kumba Iron Ore’s Kolomela mine strives to build thriving communities and protect livelihoods by entering into strategic partnerships that will realise alternative and sustainable economic sectors. Farming in the Northern Cape has been subjected to persistent droughts and the sector must seek innovative ways to overcome challenges. To enhance farming in the Northern Cape, Kolomela recently donated R100,000 towards the hosting of an agricultural seminar by the Northern Cape Dorper Club.

In his speech at the farmers seminar Keaobaka Matilo, community liaison specialist at Kolomela described agriculture as a crucial and strategic sector that facilitates food security and creates livelihoods. “It is very important to sustain the economic growth of the Northern Cape while impacting lives positively This initiative is in line with one of the pillars of our Sustainable Mining Plan which isThriving Communities and one of our stretch goals which is Livelihoods. It also links to our vision of shared, sustainable prosperity in our host communities beyond the lifespan of the mine.”

The informative agricultural seminar held at the Postmasburg Showgrounds, focused on the informationand training needs of farmers in general, but specifically our emerging Northern Cape farmers. Emerging farmers from all over the Northern Cape attended the seminar and each delegate received an information bulletin that contains valuable farming advice.The presentations of the day included lectures and exhibits by esteemed agricultural scientists, breeding experts and farming specialists.
