Area Attractions GLACIER POINT, an overlook with a commanding view of Yosemite Valley, Half Dome, and Yosemite Falls, is located 30 miles (a one-hour drive) from either Yosemite Valley or Wawona. A short, paved, wheelchair-accessible trail takes you to a point 3,214 feet above Yosemite Valley’s Curry Village, allowing views of Yosemite’s high country. In 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt went on a three-day guided wilderness trip through Yosemite with John Muir that started at the Mariposa Grove, and included Sentinel Dome, Glacier Point, and Yosemite Valley. Muir seized this opportunity “to do some forest good in talking freely around the campfire,” with the president. Buffalo Soldiers from the Ninth Cavalry Troop were there as presidential escorts, and were asked to clear the Four Mile Trail for the president’s use, but Muir and Roosevelt had other plans and used that ploy to escape from their escorts! This story ended up as an article in the New York Times later that year. MARIPOSA GROVE FEATURES SEVERAL ICONIC SEQUOIAS: Grizzly Giant: One of the largest and oldest trees, estimated at 2,700 years old Fallen Monarch: Famous for a historic 1899 photograph showing cavalry officers riding atop the fallen tree Bachelor and Three Graces: A picturesque cluster popular for photography Upper Grove Trees: Includes the Clothespin Tree, Faithful Couple, and the fallen Wawona Tunnel Tree, accessible via a longer hike with elevation gain WATERFALLS: Yosemite Valley is home to most of the park’s famous waterfalls. The best time to see them is during spring runoff; they have little or no water in late summer and fall. TUNNEL VIEW provides one of the most famous views of Yosemite Valley. From here you can see El Capitan and Bridalveil Fall rising from Yosemite Valley, with Half Dome in the background. This viewpoint is at the east end of the Wawona Tunnel along the Wawona Road (Highway 41). EL CAPITAN rises over 3,000 feet above El Capitan Meadow In Yosemite Valley, El Capitan Meadow provides a view straight up El Capitan and a great view of Cathedral Rocks, as well. Located along one-way Northside Drive, it is best to stop here on your way out of Yosemite Valley. BEYOND THE MERCED RIVER ARE EL CAPITAN AND BRIDALVEIL FALL You can look up Yosemite Valley from alongside the Merced River at Valley View. Located along one-way Northside Drive, it is best to stop here on your way out of Yosemite Valley. This popular vista is located just after a view of Bridalveil Fall but immediately before Pohono Bridge, about the time you begin to see directional signs for highways leaving the park. Page 7
