IT’S ALL IN THE FAMILY! When you’re driving the Alaska Highway and you get to Alaska, the very first town you come to is Tok, and the first RV park you see is Tok RV Village, (mile 1313.4) built and run by a longtime Alaskan family, the Jernigans. Construction of the Tok RV Village campground was started by the family during the Fall of 1985 and opened in 1986 with 50 sites. This was accomplished while Jerry was working on the Alaska pipeline (the original reason he and his family moved from Portland to Alaska in 1975), and Rose and son, Michael were employed by a major construction company located in Anchorage. Over the following six years, Jerry, Rose and Michael commuted from Anchorage to Tok each weekend during the summers as they oversaw management of the park, added amenities, increased the number of sites (now 161) and improved the services. All of their hard work paid off when, in July 2007, the Good Sam RV club gave Tok RV Village their highest rating of any park in Alaska: 9.5 out of 10. In 1991 the Jernigans retired from their professions and moved from Anchorage to Tok. Jerry, Rose and Mike run the park with the help of their grandson Chad and granddaughter Ashley (both truly born and raised in the RV park). Rose is responsible for guest registration, reservations and operation of the gift store while Jerry and Mike handle all maintenance and the ongoing improvements to the parks.

One of the things that the Jernigans pride themselves on is the cleanliness of the RV park. “Clean is an understatement,” Jerry says. During the peak tourist season Tok RV Village features nightly entertainment. This along with the scooped ice cream that’s popular with kids and adults alike. The park is big-rig friendly with over a 100 pull-thrus and a complement of sites for smaller RVs, electricity to the tent sites and ample space and greenery between all sites. When asked what Mike appreciates most about the park, he says, “Everything works, you want 50-amp you get it, the breakers aren’t popping off, lots of hot water, washers and dryers work. And the Wi-Fi, internet, and cable TV are always up and running.” Mike is also the maintenance man so he’s in the know. Tok Junction was chosen as the site for Tok RV Village for its unique location as a jumping-off point for all highway traffic entering and departing Alaska. Because it’s located roughly a day’s drive from all major cities (Whitehorse - 400 miles, Fairbanks - 212 miles, Valdez 254 miles, Anchorage - 323 miles) and untold miles from most tourist home ports, it’s an excellent location for taking a rest break, restocking supplies and reviewing and confirming one’s Alaska travel plans. The Jernigans are always eager to answer guests travel questions and assist with their plans for visiting the “Last Frontier.” Ending the conversation, Jerry adds with a smile, “We really enjoy meeting all the people. That’s what makes this such a nice business.”
