DESERT SHADOWS

Off we go on another brand new year, it just doesn’t seem possible.

Time just keeps going by at a faster pace each year. I’m sad that there is nothing we can do about it except enjoy each day as it comes and make the best of it. Keep smiling and having a good time.

DECORATORS: I know December is over already, but I still want to thank our wonderful decorators. The December newsletter was already out to print, so I couldn’t acknowledge them at that time. However they did such a wonderful job I would like to thank them now. When you see them please join me in saying “thank you” for making our auditorium look so nice and festive for December. They are Sue Schmid, Kathy Miles, Linda Marlman, Jill Switzer, Sherri Bricker, Charlene Kinmann, Ron Kinmann, Bill Rider, Shyla Rotering, George Greig, Audrey Greig, Less Henry and Larry Callahan. Thanks for taking the time out of your busy day to decorate for all our Decembers activities. It was a beautiful winter wonderland and was enjoyed by all.

As we get into January the population at Desert Shadows rises a bit more each day. That brings more activities to attend, and January looks pretty full. We hope you plan on attending as many of the fun activities as you can.

WESTERN DAYS Kick off our Western days, Wednesday evening with the Travel’n Opry Show at 7:00pm tickets $5.00. Thursday is the Western themed, Potluck lunch; please sign up on sheet in the lobby. There will be many events going on Friday and Saturday please take a moment to look at the bulletin boards and see the schedule for all of the fun activities we have planned.

Also, we will need volunteers to help with them, and make desserts for cake walk. Sign up sheets will be posted. Just keep your calendars clear for January 23rd through January 26th and your eye on the boards so you don’t miss a thing. We wrap up western days with American Kountry band Saturday evening.

We also need volunteers to help set up and decorate tables, and ladies to be models, please come to activities office to let us know what you are interested in doing.

It should prove to be a fun western show.

DESERT SHADOWS PARK PLAY The play will be performed in January on Tuesday 29th and Wednesday 30th at 7:00 pm.

You can get your free tickets at the activities office and specify what day you would like to attend. There is no fee but you will need a ticket so we know how many chairs to set up. The actors will need time to practice and a place to practice, so we might be moving around some schedules for them. Play directed by Paul LePage.

DO YOU LIKE TO SEW? Please come join us in the back auditorium on Mondays from 10 am to 4 pm to work on you own projects or a class project. You will need your own sewing machine and materials, but we offer help and assistance when needed.

We will also be offering some workshops starting in January and going through March for those interested in learning something new. Some of the class meetings are for Hot Iron Totes, Pumpkins, Microwave hot pads (for bowls and cups) etc. You will need to call Chris Jewett for a supply lists if you are interested in the special classes. Computer User Group Wednesday, January 2 will be the first session of the Computer Users Group this year. It begins at 10:30am and is open to everyone.

Bible Study are held on Wednesdays @ 2:00 p.m. in the Back Auditorium with Rev. Withee teaching through Jan. 16th and then Rev. Ekleberry Jan. 23rd – Mar. 27th

If you are a beginner, we are here to help you. If you are an advanced user, we need your expertise.

We usually have a 15 to 30 minute presentation on a computer related topic, followed by group generated questions and answers. The group is very informal, with an easy give-and-take atmosphere. If you have a “portable” computer, it may be helpful if you bring it to our gathering.

Our first session will be a general session devoted to answering your questions and hopefully to solving a few problems. We will also ask you for suggestions on upcoming topics. Following are just a few ideas: 1. Decrap your computer-especially if it's a new one 2. A demo of how to get a phone message digitized - like closed captioning but using your phone line and a computer.

ALL ARE WELCOME!!!

3. Discuss new devices people may have received over the holidays...smart phones, e-readers, etc.

We also invite anyone willing to sing in the choir to our practices on Fridays @ 10:00 a.m.

New Year’s Day Black Eyed Peas “See in the new year with a hearty bowl of black-eyed peas cooked with garlic, onion, tomatoes and diced country ham. A real country ham is quite salty, but the flavor and seasoning is just right for this homey dish."

Ingredients: 1 pound dry black-eyed peas 2 cups chopped cooked ham salt and pepper to taste 1 pinch garlic powder

2 onions, diced 1 (14.5 ounce) can whole tomatoes Directions Place black-eyed peas in 8 quart pot. Add enough water to fill pot 3/4 full. Stir in ham and diced onions, and season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Place tomatoes in a blender or food processor, and blend until the tomatoes are liquefied. Add tomatoes to pot. Bring all ingredients to boil. Cover the pot, and simmer on low heat for 2 1/2 to 3 hours, or until the peas are tender. And most importantly, don't forget to have a Happy New year!!!
