Clabough’s Campground History Clabough’s Campground is part of the original Clabough’s Farm, dating back to the early 1900s. The original farmhouse is still intact, and is located not far from the campground. The photo to the right was taken in 1940 of Harold Clabough’s parents, Clyde and Willie Elizabeth Clabough. Harold’s father, Clyde, was a World War I veteran. Harold’s mother, an independent thinker, did not like her middle name Elizabeth, and was known by everyone as Willie. Both Clyde and Willie were born in the late 19th century and survived until the 1970s and 1960s respectively.

Clabough Family History Freda Katherine Watson (1928-2006), the oldest of seven children, was a city girl, and Harold Mitchell Clabough (1923- ), the proverbial country boy. Both were born and raised in Sevierville, Tennessee and married in 1948. Harold, very much a self-made man, brought vision to their marriage and Freda, practicality and determination. Together they would create the business that has grown into the campground of today. Drafted while a junior in high school during World War II, Harold found himself in New Guinea at the time he should have been attending his high school prom. Continuing his service to our country following the end of the war, he would later retire from the Naval Reserves. He honed many skills during the early years of marriage as he worked in the construction business, and for TVA and the Job Corps. Later, his students at Sevier County Vocational School would enjoy the benefits of his expertise in woodworking and carpentry. Freda found her skills as wife, mother and service representative for South Central Bell Telephone, easily transferable to the responsibilities she would assume for the new business she and Harold would start. Her meticulous attention to detail, and excellent bookkeeping would keep a fledgling business on track to success. With the birth of their daughter Brenda in 1949, both Harold and Freda were doting, protective, and familyoriented parents. Harold taught his daughter how to ride a bike and how to swim, very fond memories for Brenda. Freda made their home warm and comfortable, and Brenda’s friends and classmates found it a great gathering place. Both parents were tremendously supportive of Brenda and followed her across the country to attend her basketball games. This love and support gave Brenda a solid foundation for her adult life. Understanding the importance of education, Harold and Freda encouraged Brenda to pursue a college degree, and their advice, encouragement and support helped Brenda reach her educational goals. Brenda would follow her parents’ example and make certain her two children completed their college educations before joining the family business full-time. Harold and Freda gave back to their community as well and Harold continues to this day. This has been done quietly, humbly, with no fanfare, but with recognition of their blessings. Harold is quick to extend the hand of friendship, and has provided assistance to many of those in need. 1978: Service station and store (sold hot dogs, precursor to café) 1980: Establishment of original campground 1992: Addition of full service café 1995: Building addition to café 2003: Expansion of campground 2004: Construction of new offices and registration area 2007: Addition of new cottages 2010: Opening of Lazy River 2014: Going forward: ????? There will be more to come! This is a family owned and operated business with Harold at the helm and Brenda’s husband, Ron Russell overseeing the business. Grandchildren David and Stephen are actively involved in all the activities required to run a successful campground, from construction and maintenance to internet operations and beyond. Three great-grandchildren are in the wings, waiting for their chance to join the family business!
