InMake Exploring U.S. Route 66 a Part of Your Illinois Camping Adventure!

Turn to page 20 for a listing of all 7 Scenic Byways in Illinois.

Throughout 2026, Illinois is celebrating a milestone: the 100-year anniversary of the historic U.S. Route 66 — the iconic “Mother Road” that first connected Chicago to Los Angeles.

the 2025 Illinois camping magazine, we delved into the delights of exploring the seven scenic byways criss-crossing the state. This year, we’re focused on “The Mother Road,” U.S. Route 66. Commemorations for U.S. Route 66’s centennial are happening throughout the year incorporating a rich mix of nostalgia, culture, and community spirit.

A new, restored quarter-mile of original 1920s-era Route 66 pavement — located in Carpenter Park near Springfield — is now open to the public, giving visitors a rare chance to walk a piece of automotive and American history. In addition, several communities have launched new attractions: from giant “Muffler Man” statues and neon-sign parks in Granite City to Route 66–themed murals in Bloomington and McLean County.

The celebrations hit a high point on November 11, 2026, when the Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway Association hosts a full-day statewide conference and centennial celebration at Route 66 Motorheads Bar & Grill Museum in Springfield. Expect a mix of history

sessions, recognition of communities, live entertainment, and a gathering of classic-car enthusiasts.

Beyond the big events, the centennial year is a living tribute to the road’s legacy — honoring the quirky roadside attractions, small-town America charm, and cultural impact that made Route 66 legendary. This is a year for both longtime fans and newcomers to reconnect with the “Main Street of America.”

A new version of the official Illinois highway map (2026 edition) highlights the historic alignment of Route 66 — useful for travelers and rediscovering old segments. To request a map, email: DOT.maps@ illinois.gov. Free copies will also be available at interstate rest areas and other IDOT facilities.

Road Trip Resources

Along the route, find roadside attractions and events, classic-car friendly stops, neon signage parks, vintage-era diners and architecture — especially as local communities push for heritage tourism tied to the centennial.

Celebrating America’s 250th in Illinois: A Year of Reflection, Pride, and Community

The United States celebrates its 250th anniversary this year, and Illinois is gearing up for a year-long celebration that blends history, culture, innovation, and community spirit. From Chicago’s iconic skyline to the small towns that line the prairies, Illinois offers a rich tapestry of stories that reflect the American experience—making it a meaningful place to celebrate America’s Semiquincentennial.

Here are resources for researching Illinois’ historic sites, museums, attractions, and events celebrating America’s 250th:

The Illinois America 250 Commission: www.il250.org/

Illinois - the Land of Lincoln - has had pivotal moments in the nation’s political and social evolution. The state is a hub of industry and transportation, and a crossroads of cultures. Throughout 2026, communities across the state present special events, exhibitions, and festivals inviting residents and visitors alike to reflect on the past while looking toward the future.

Chicago is anchoring many statewide commemorations, hosting expanded historical exhibits, patriotic riverfront festivals, and special programs at museums such as the Chicago History Museum, DuSable Black History Museum, and the Field Museum.

Western, Central, and Southern Illinois destinations are offering equally meaningful tributes. Springfield, the state capital and Lincoln’s longtime home, plans special ceremonies, walking tours, reenactments, and educational programs that connect local history to the broader national story. Communities along the Mississippi River and the historic byways of the prairies will celebrate with heritage festivals, historic site open houses, and Americana-themed fairs that showcase regional food, music, and traditions.

When researching your 2026 Illinois camping options, be sure to check out each park’s events webpage for activities celebrating Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and America’s 250th anniversary.

The Illinois Campground Association invites Illinoisans and visiting campers to join us in honoring America’s journey, highlighting the state’s unique contributions, and gathering in a shared spirit of unity, gratitude, and hope for the next 250 years.
