By Andee K. Fagan If you live in NJ, you are in luck that you have so many campgrounds to choose from that won’t take you hours to get to. We camp all over NJ and something we always say is, “I don’t feel like we are in NJ.”
and only pay for the weekends. Not having to tow, park or set up your site every weekend is a huge bonus. It is also a huge convenience if you must alter your weekend plans because of an unscheduled sporting event or party.
Now, mind you, I’m not exactly sure what NJ should feel like. I don’t know if it should be like the mountains and waterfalls in Sussex County, the beaches at the Jersey Shore or the pinelands in South Jersey. All I know is that it is easy to get away and have a relaxing time with our friends and family all year round.
The Spring might have some unpredictable weather conditions, but it is always nicer to be at the campsite than home doing chores. I like to refer to Spring as “Still Winter.” The nights are still chilly enough that a big campfire feels like the perfect place to be.
The Fagan family enjoys a quiet day of fishing.
All four seasons have their perks. Spring has hiking and warm campfires. Summer has the beaches, pools, and concerts. Fall has hiking and beautiful foliage. Winter has skiing and snowboarding. As NJ residents we also appreciate the short drives to the campgrounds. Many campgrounds offer Spring gas saver options. You can park your RV on one site for an extended time before the main season begins
Summer is great because campgrounds are in full swing with planned activities and all their amenities are open. Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start to summer here in NJ. The beaches are open, but jumping into a heated pool at a campground is more inviting than jumping in the cold ocean. Also, there are concerts and an abundance of entertainment everywhere you look. of our campgrounds have it! An important question for many travelers is, “Can we bring our pet?” Camping is one of the best types of vacations to include your furry family members. Most NJ campgrounds are pet friendly, many with dog parks and activities where the pet is included. With that being said, please be sure to check with each park directly for any restrictions or requirements so you, your pet, and your camping neighbors all have a safe and enjoyable stay. Are you at least thinking, “Let’s Go Camping in New Jersey” yet? Let me entice you a little more. The Garden State is ideal for camping, no matter who you are or what you like to do. We have distinctive vacation regions and, depending on where you’re headed, you’ll find mountains, rivers, rural landscapes, city skylines, quaint villages, and the famous Jersey Shore. You can fish, swim, hike, bike, boat, sunbathe, gamble, stroll the boardwalk, shop, go to amusement parks, visit historic museums, see major concerts… you name it! Anywhere you like to visit or anything you like to do, there’s a NJCOA campground just minutes away.

SHORE REGION Let’s Go Camping in the Shore Region! Did you know the Jersey Shore was named one of “The 50 Best Places to Travel in 2023” by Travel & Leisure? You might have guessed by the region name that there is coastal shoreline here. In fact, the region has more than 90 miles of white-sand beaches fit for sunbathing, swimming, fishing, and other water sports. Multiple boardwalks beckon, most with classic touristy activities like arcades, performing arts, souvenir shops, and tasty treats that tempt every palette. Maritime history stands tall at landmark lighthouses like the Sandy Hook Lighthouse. Venture further inland, and the rural landscape provides both food and fun. In between birding expeditions, fishing trips, and canoeing adventures stop by plentiful roadside produce stands for fresh foods to liven up your picnic table. Be sure to carve out a day to tire the kids out at Six Flags Great Adventure & Safari in Jackson.
ADVENTURES Southern Ocean County Long Beach Island is a favorite vacation spot with loads to see and do. Sugar sand beaches beckon at Long Beach Island. Barnegat exudes an artisan spirit inspired by the coastal life. Hit the links in Little Egg Harbor with your choice of golf courses. Browse the thriving art scene in the Tuckerton area, known as “clam town.”
Turkey Swamp Park A walk through this 2,388 acre wooded park reveals a primitive wilderness. Much of the park is forested by pitch pine and oak trees with an understory of bracken fern, pepper bush, blueberry, and catbriar. Fish for bass, catfish, and bluegills. Rent a kayak, canoe, or paddleboat. An archery range is open year round. www.monmouthcountyparks.com SEE OUR AD ON PAGE 19

GREATER ATLANTIC CITY REGION Let’s Go Camping in the Greater Atlantic City Region! Guess what city is in this region? YES! Atlantic City, home to America’s oldest boardwalk, chock full of world class casino gaming facilities, and boasting the 100+ stores of Tanger Outlets-The Walk, taking up three city blocks. But let’s talk about the quieter flipside to the glitzy AC action. The area is populated with quaint, quieter towns with a European flair, like Port Republic. The city of Margate is home to Lucy, the world’s largest elephant-shaped building. Did you know that Hammonton is known as the Blueberry Capital of the world? Birding enthusiasts thrill at the tens of thousands of birds that stop to rest in the Oceanville area on their spring and fall migrations. Keep your eyes peeled for bald eagles and peregrine falcons! We’ll name drop a few outdoor destinations here that you can add to your must-see list: Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, Brigantine National Wildlife Refuge, Estell Manor, Lake Lenape, Weymouth Furnace, Penny Pot, Gaskill, Riverbend, and Patcong Creek.

Eventually, a popular hotel business was built around Lucy. Presidents and royalty came from around the world to stay at the neighboring Elephant Hotel and climb the stairs to Lucy’s howdah. Lucy was completely restored to her original splendor, inside and out. In 1976, Lucy was designated a National Historic Landmark

We love that we don’t have to leave the campground to enjoy a good band, but sometimes it is also fun to enjoy a movie or concert on the beach. As summer warms up and the temperatures rise it is a great time to camp along the Delaware River and take a rafting trip or tube and float down the river. Fall is another great time to do a gas saver option. The days get cooler and shorter. They are perfect for a great hike in the morning and then stopping by a diner for a bite to eat and then enjoying the afternoon at the campground followed by a warm campfire. We winter camp at one site from November to April. We rely on propane to keep the furnace going and keep us warm. Winter camping has its challenges, but it also has its advantages. We camp in the Skylands region for the winter and ski / snowboard at Mountain Creek Resort. Before the skiing season begins, we take advantage of the uncrowded trails at the Delaware Water Gap and Stokes State Forrest. Then we spend the day on the slopes and then head back to the campground at night to hang around the campfire with all the other winter Continued on page 41 32

DELAWARE RIVER REGION Let’s Go Camping in the Delaware River Region! This region is closest to the greater Philadelphia, PA area, making it an easy destination for a weekend camping getaway. In this forested region, you’ll find 150 miles of shoreline along the Delaware Bay and the Delaware River, making it a boater’s delight. Kayaking, canoeing, or just going for a lazy float in a tube down the river can be a great way to while the day away. After a trip to the Adventure Aquarium, pop into one or more of the area’s award-winning wineries to take back a few bottles to share around the campfire. Lovers of brews and spirits aren’t left out, though, with several breweries and distilleries serving up locally made beverages. Work off your indulgences by hiking one of many winding trails in forested nature preserves such as the Pine Barrens.

campers. The keys to winter camping are having the right clothing and a lot of firewood. Having a great group to camp with is a huge bonus. Whether you have an RV or tent, or want to rent a cabin, there are so many great places to camp in NJ. We love quiet rural parks for a weekend getaway. We also like the resort type campgrounds like Jellystone South Jersey. At Sea Pirate Campground you can enjoy the pool or take a short drive to enjoy the beaches at LBI. The Great Divide offers fantastic fishing, and their line-up of bands never disappoints. Or head down to the Southern Shore Region to enjoy Cape May and Wildwood. The variety of New Jersey campgrounds each have their own unique slice of NJ’s vast geological diversity. SOUTHERN SHORE REGION Let’s Go Camping in the Southern Shore Region! Here, we’re surrounded by water! Choose between the shoreline of Delaware Bay and the coastline of the Atlantic Ocean. Among the many distinguished places to visit in this region is America’s original seaside resort with Victorian charm - Cape May. Or, perhaps you’ll enjoy the more eclectic fun of the shorelines and boardwalks of Wildwoods, Ocean City, and Sea Isle City, each with a full calendar of events and an array of entertainment options day and night. Several of the fourteen beaches throughout the region offer free access, so there’s a beach for everyone! Get out and try parasailing, surfing, and surf-casting, or keep it a little more low-key with a round of mini-golf. Plan a visit to Cape May County Park & Zoo, the state’s largest zoo. A couple notable annual events include North Wildwood’s New Jersey BBQ & Blues Festival in July and Avalon’s Seafood Festival in October.

GATEWAY REGION Let’s Go Camping in the Gateway Region! The region is situated just minutes from New York City and all its wonders. With that, plus ample public transportation options, people from all over the world stage in the Gateway Region for day trips to the Big Apple, Ellis Island, and the Statue of Liberty. In fact, you’ll find no better view of the statue than right here. But there’s a lot to do locally, too! Did you know that this area of New Jersey has the most diners in the world? The largest shopping mall and entertainment complex in New Jersey, American Dream, is located in East Rutherford. You can play an abundance of world class golf courses, visit Thomas Edison’s home in West Orange, and discover the jagged cliffs of the Palisades looming 530 feet above the Hudson River. Vibrant small businesses fill the main streets of quaint villages and towns throughout the region.

These sandwiches feature deep-fried hot dogs placed inside pizza bread and are typically topped with fried peppers, onions, and potatoes. The combination of crispy fried ingredients and the unique bread makes Italian hot dogs a regional favorite. Boardwalk Treats New Jersey’s extensive coastline is famous for its vibrant boardwalks, and they offer a treasure trove of classic American treats. At the Jersey Shore, you can find delicious funnel cakes, caramel corn, saltwater taffy, pizza, and zeppoles (fried dough). No visit to the state is complete without indulging in these sweet and savory delights while strolling along the boardwalk.
Fresh Seafood With its extensive coastline along the Atlantic Ocean, New Jersey is a seafood lover’s paradise. From succulent lobster rolls and creamy clam chowder to platters of fresh oysters, the state offers a bounty of seafood options. Coastal towns like Cape May and Long Beach Island are known for their seafood restaurants, offering a taste of the sea in every dish.
Atlantic City’s Saltwater Taffy Speaking of boardwalk treats, Atlantic City is particularly renowned for its saltwater taffy. Legend has it that this chewy, sweet confection got its name from a flood that soaked a candy store’s inventory, and the owner cleverly marketed the candy as “saltwater taffy.” Today, you can find numerous flavors of saltwater taffy at shops along the Atlantic City boardwalk (as well as our other coastal boardwalks), making it a delightful souvenir for visitors. Diners New Jersey is often referred to as the “Diner Capital of the World.” Diners, those quintessential American roadside eateries, are scattered throughout the state and serve a wide range of comfort foods 24/7. They offer everything from classic breakfast dishes to hearty sandwiches, burgers, and homemade pies. The diner culture in New Jersey is deeply ingrained in its culinary identity and serves as a gathering place for locals.

New Jersey’s famous foods reflect the state’s diverse history, culture, and geography. From breakfast sandwiches with Taylor Ham to the sweet nostalgia of boardwalk treats, the Garden State’s culinary offerings are a testament to its rich culinary heritage. Whether you’re exploring the vibrant cities or relaxing along the picturesque shorelines, New Jersey’s food scene is sure to leave a lasting impression and a satisfied palate. So, the next time you find yourself in the Garden State, be sure to savor these iconic dishes that make New Jersey’s cuisine truly unique. Look up New Jersey dining options by region, city, or name on New Jersey’s tourism website at www.VisitNJ.org.

SKYLANDS REGION Let’s Go Camping in the Skylands Region! This is the rural, woodsy side of New Jersey you don’t often hear as much about, compared to the state’s more urban or coastal destinations. But with forested mountains and valleys, it’s a perfect example of why it’s called, “The Garden State.” Here you’ll find High Point State Park, home to the state’s highest point (1,083) and the heart of the Skylands Region. Nature and wildlife is honored and preserved here. Hear wolves howl at the Lakota Wolf Preserve in Columbia and see fish stocking activities at the Pequest Trout Hatchery in Oxford. See more nature on a trek along 28 miles of the Appalachian Trail that cuts through the region. Look to the sky for the Hot Air Balloon Festival at Warren County Farmers’ Fair in late July. The region is also home to the New Jersey State Fair, held the first week of August.

Here’s a fun and easy snack to enjoy around the campfire, or a fun fixing for your next potluck picnic!
Cook on the campfire, on the grill, or in the oven! Serves 8 Ingredients • 1 Tbsp butter • 1 bag milk chocolate chips • 1 bag large marshmallows • Graham crackers, pretzels,and/or fruit Directions Place ~9” cast iron skillet over medium-high heat (~400°F). Add the butter and swirl to coat the skillet. Add the chocolate chips and cook until melted (a few minutes). Arrange a layer of marshmallows, flat side down, until chocolate is covered. Cook until marshmallows are browned and ooey gooey (~5 minutes). If cooking on a grill or campfire, cover with a lid or foil to help it cook more evenly. Serve immediately with graham crackers or an assortment of dippers on a tray! Try it with vanilla wafers, pretzels, strawberries, apple slices, and more.
