Summer News Riverside businesses get water safety training In April, businesses working near the River Medway in Maidstone took part in water safety training so they can help people who get into difficulties.

The training session with Kent Fire and Rescue and the RNLI, was hosted at Lockmeadow Entertainment Centre, and highlighted reasons people end up in the river and how to help rescue them while keeping yourself safe.

New Mayor for Maidstone!

During May, Maidstone elected a new Mayor at the Maidstone Borough Council (MBC) Annual General Meeting. We would like to welcome Cllr Derek Mortimer as the new Mayor of Maidstone, and we thank outgoing Mayor, Cllr Fay Gooch for everything she has done during her time in office.

Maidstone Business Boost Networker Event In June, Lockmeadow Entertainment Centre was host to the MBB Networker Event. Organised by The Business Terrace, Maidstone Borough Council’s flexible workspace, the event invited Maidstone businesses of all ages and sizes to come and find out what ‘boosts’ could be available to them.

Celebrations for

Maidstone United M

aidstone United are celebrating promotion to the Vanarama National League – the top flight of non-league football.

The Stones were crowned champions in front of a sellout crowd of 4,175 at the Gallagher Stadium and next season will take on a host of household names, here in Kent’s county town.

It’s a far cry from when the club reformed in 1992.

If the Vanarama National League is level five, the club restarted at level 13 and gradually worked their way up the leagues. In the early 90s, the club played their home matches on a pitch behind the London Road Retail Park (home now to the likes of Dunelm and Home Bargains), before groundsharing miles away in Sittingbourne and Ashford.

All that changed in the summer of 2012 when the Gallagher Stadium opened. The homecoming heralded a golden era that saw three promotions in four seasons and a dramatic FA Cup replay win in front of the BT Sport cameras.

After a relegation and two Covid-dogged seasons, this year’s success has been all the sweeter with crowds averaging more than 2,400 and all the knock-on benefits that brings to the town centre with increased footfall before and after the game.

Celebrations continue this summer as the Stones mark a decade at the Gallagher Stadium.

There is a full programme of events and activities, including the Bill Williams testimonial, community section tournaments, a six-a-side tournament and a golf day. The club are also planning a marquee pre-season friendly on Saturday 16 July to mark the anniversary.

DINO EGG TRAILER In partnership with Maidstone Museum, we were very EGGcited to arrange the Dino Egg Trail. Participants were able to collect clues from dinosaur eggs, decorated by local artists and schools, which were hidden at 20 businesses across the town. Thank you to all of the wonderful businesses, artists, Maidstone Museum and to everyone who took part!

Whether it’s organising local events to increase footfall in the town centre, providing additional safety measures around town or supporting businesses in other areas, we listen to our BID members and see how we can help.

During April and May OneMaidstone BID hosted multiple training workshops for local businesses.

The Social Media Training courses were held by Onward Socials, Maidstone based Social Media and Content Consultant, and covered 6 modules on the basics of everything needed to create a strong social media presence.

Summer in Maidstone MAIDSTONE FUSION

STREET FESTIVAL We are delighted that for another year, The Maidstone Fusion Street Festival is returning to our town! The Fusion Street Festival hosted by Cohesion Plus and Maidstone Borough Council, will be on Saturday 16th July and will include a great mix of performances, live music and arts activities for the whole family to enjoy. Look out for a variety of entertainment throughout the town center on the day.

o mark Pride month in Maidstone, ‘Not a Phase’ was created as an oral social history exploration, in partnership with OneMaidstone, Hazlitt Theatre and HI Performing Arts, to amplify LGBTQ+ voices in Maidstone and it’s neighbouring villages.

To make this project such a success we asked people who identify as LGBTQ+ to share stories about places in Maidstone that have been significant in their story.

We wanted stories of queer joy and the human lived experience of growing up LGBTQ+ in Maidstone.

Some of the stories were happy and others were sad but the most important thing is that these stories were honest.

The interactive audio tour was available throughout June and culminated in a live performance at the end of the month. Thank you to everyone who shared their story, and to all who took part in the event.

THE QUEEN’S JUBILEE

T

he Jubilee weekend was a busy one across the country, and Maidstone Town Centre was no different! At OneMaidstone we were delighted to work with CEP Agency and Applause Touring to arrange the town-wide entertainment from The Mall right across to Fremlin Walk.

Around town you’ll have seen a Bubblologist, Royal Guards, Face Painting, Crafts Table, Dancing Cleaners, Still Walking Trees and Tree Fellas.

The sun was shining and the town was buzzing with shoppers and a few extra guests…

Plus, in keeping with the Queen’s Jubilee request to plant more trees, OneMaidstone were running a competition! Entrants were to find our farmers around town and take a selfie with them for a chance to win! Thank you to everyone who entered and congratulations to all of our winners - Happy planting!

ith mental Health Awareness Week just gone (May 9th - 16th) we wanted to highlight one of the great service-based businesses in our town, who are here to help.

We spoke with Counselling For Life to find out more about their work.

Who are you?

Hi, we are CFL, Counselling for Life. We provide young people and adults with online and face to face, one-toone and couple, low-cost counselling and psychotherapy sessions, with trained professionals.

Our therapists have a wealth of experience working with addictions, abuse, mental and physical health issues, relationships and other traumas.

Who is on your team?

The Directors and founders of CFL are Michelle DennyBrowne, Angela Christie and Rosemary Turner, who have been in the counselling and therapy world for over 40 years between them.

CFL have a mix of qualified and student therapists working online, and face to face from our counselling room in Maidstone.

Ivan Spikin heads up the business from the company’s head office in Maidstone and has over 30 years experience working for both local brokers in the town and also brokers in London. He aims to provide “good old fashioned service” that actually involves visiting local businesses to see their shops, offices, restaurants and bars and engage with them to discuss their insurance requirements and the local risks and issues facing them.

“Many brokers now never see their customers or the premises at which they are trading, making it very difficult to ensure the policy cover is correct and fit for purpose! Which is usually only ever discovered when a claim occurs!”

Unfortunately, many insurance policies are now sold on a “one size fits all” approach, which isn’t usually correct and doesn’t provide the best solution or best pricing.

Unlike other brokers who claim to be “local” with an 01622 number, but don’t have an office in the town, we are based at the Maidstone TV Studios and 3 of us live in Maidstone with another employee based in Rochester.

Visit Maidstone launch Walking Festival V

isit Maidstone, the tourism team at Maidstone Borough Council (MBC) has launched the Heart of Kent Walking Festival with hikers coming from far and wide to take part in the first walk.

The festival is being organised by a collaboration of partners from organisations around Maidstone and will take place from 30 September and will run until 2 October 2022, the walk marked the start of the first event of its kind in the borough of Maidstone.

Laura Dickson, Visitor Economy and Events Development Manager at Maidstone Borough Council said: “We are thrilled this first walk has taken place and can’t wait to start encouraging people along to the many routes the Walking Festival will have to offer. “The first walk was a taster of what people can expect, the full festival will include long distance walks, history walks and a wide range of walks across the borough.

Not only is walking one of the best exercises, it is also great for your wellbeing.”

The walk started in Charing and finished in Lenham and was led by Therese Hammond, from Kent Community Rail Partnership with help from MBC. Many of the walkers stayed, visiting the shops, cafes and pubs at the end of the walk, allowing people to enjoy the area and providing additional spend to local businesses.
