People of Caribbean heritage have contributed their talents to our nation from its inception. Some names that come to mind include Alexander Hamilton, Marcus Garvey, Malcolm X, Derek Walcott, Cicely Ty-son, Sidney Poitier, Roger Toussaint, Sheila Jackson Lee, Colin Powell and you. Today, we contribute to the growth, stability, and safety of the nation. We are doctors, lawyers, chefs, welders, business people, educators, kitchen workers, engineers, and combat soldiers, just to name a few. We touch every facet of American life.

And now this! In your day-to-day interaction with other Caribbean people, I am certain that you have heard these comments; Caribbean people cannot work together! Why do the different groups not hold joint events? Stop! Now, think of the people who whispered those words. What were their motives? Of course, I think they are dead wrong. But let us suppose that their claims are true, I want to explore the reasons why some people would come to these conclusions.

Now let’s start! Although we do not need a reason to party, we always work together when there is a clearly defined purpose. The group’s mission has to be clearly understood by all participants. However, there is an 800 lb gorilla in the room. And that is trust. Here is one reason, I think. Some leaders usually have no plan, very little plan, or if there is some type of a plan, the objectives are fuzzy, and oftentimes, no buy-in by the members. As a result of poorly defined plans, leaders have the ability to manipulate objectives to sometimes fit their personal agendas. And we do not like that!

Here is another reason. Money! And it is back to trust. We don’t like to repay money borrowed from another Caribbean person. Once the money has left your hand you can kiss it good-bye; everything else becomes more important than the repayment to your Caribbean brother or sister. Worse yet, they will smile with you like nothing ever happened.

Moreover, every time groups or associations collaborate on a project, you can rest assured there will be a disagreement on the finance side. Remember, we don’t like the formal business model of using contracts. Contracts are seen as anti-brethren.

There are still some other reasons. For example, I call it, “islandism”. It is the belief that people from one island are “better” than another. If they are from the same island, I call is “districtism”. It is the belief that if you are from the city you are smart and if you from the country, you are uneducated.

These are unwritten or unspoken rules, but it is definitely something you can feel. Another example is what I call the “freeriders”. These are leaders who take sole credit for work without acknowledging the contribution of other groups or individuals. Of course, we are experts in melee, another reason.

There are certain elements that need to be present in a relationship for collaboration to be successful - mutual respect, trust, shared ideas and goals, and a desire to work hard to achieve the expected results. In many cases working hard in our community is a thankless job, with long hours and little or no pay. Any dedicated volunteer will tell you they do it because of the love of their people and their culture. Rather than getting their efforts applauded, many will tell you that no matter how hard they work, some of their own countrymen and others in the community will complain about what is not getting done.

In other matters, I have always spoken on the need for our young ones to study Math and Science and have some good calculator (like TI-83) and computer skills. Okay maybe I am selfish, but having these skills can ensure that many of our young people have jobs. My analysis was supported when CNN run a story on Baytown. Just in the event, you did not see the story. There are about 4000 jobs coming to Baytown in the technology field.

Companies such as ExxonMobil, ConocoPhillips, and Bayer are recruiting for these positions. Positions that need to be filled include operators, research, lab and process technicians. And guess what the requirements are? At least a two-year degree in Math and Science! For over 40 year, Baytown has been the home for many of our Caribbean families. And just by location, these positions would be ideal.

Finally, we need to be careful with people who always echo the “sky is falling” or seek to sow seeds of discontent that does not in fact exist. Don’t get me wrong, we do have our issues. But I believe some of what is currently being espoused is way of base. We must continue to build bridges.

Panamanian Family Struggles Against All Odds

Siblings, Luis, Maria, and Isaac Rivas, now ages 19, 16, and 13 respectively have been struggling for survival since that fateful day in July 1998 when they suffered third degree burns over 90% of their bodies during a horrific house fire in Panama. Neighbors and passersby in their hometown of Arraijan miraculously rescued three of four children from the infernal blaze that afternoon.

A younger sister, Kira, did not survive the tragedy.

This was the beginning of a desperate and uphill struggle for parents, Sixto and Elena Rivas, both 56 years old and their children.

Two days after, the three children were airlift to Houston; thanks to an international network of referral sources including then Panama’s President Ernesto Balladares.

Since then, the Rivas children, Luis, Maria and Isaac have been receiving pro-bono life saving treatment at the Shriners Hospital for Children in Galveston, Texas.

In addition to this agonizing misfortune, it was only months after when Sixto Rivas was on the way home from his dock work at about 7:00 pm. He had actually crossed the street from the Balboa Port-Pier # 18 to await a bus for his 30 minute ride home.

By the time he heard a screeching sound, it was too late for him to get out the way of a drunk driver who careened a privately owned car on the curb running over him in the bus stop. As a result of the crash, Sixto was left comatose for approximately nine hours. Further, he was hospitalized for six months with multiple disabling injuries. As he lay hospitalized, Sixto reportedly could not help thinking about his family and the already “worst day of his life,” referring to the fire. By the time it was all over, Mr. Rivas was forced into disability retirement with significant reduction to his already limited wages.

Through the years, all three children have received multiple corrective surgeries for

deep tissue injuries including skeletal and skin replacement procedures. Then it was on their most recent arrival to Galveston when somebody stole their luggage, leaving them virtually with only the clothes they were wearing. And once again, it was through another network of referral sources, that the Rivas family was introduced to members of the Houston Association of Panamanians, Inc (HAP, Inc). In response to the family’s distress, community members and friends of HAP, Inc came together collaboratively in support of Sixto Rivas and his children with clothing and monetary contributions. Once again we see how important it becomes to have institutional civic groups, associations, and supportive friends available, especially during times of dire need.

Factually, the plight of this family is far from over. All three children have irreversible disabling conditions and their medical treatment is not finished. However, equally unending are the expressions of gratitude from Sixto and his children. As they develop a maturing appreciation for the gravity of their past and present conditions, Luis, Maria, and Isaac have nothing but thankfulness for their rescuers, community members, and medical personnel in Panama and in the United States. In fact, Sixto said “there was no way they could have made it this far without the bravery, kindness, skills and compassion of others.”

The children are currently at the point in treatment where they are beginning to focus on life after treatment. In addition to a foreseeable end of medical treatment, particularly Luis and Maria are understandably concerned about their vocational possibilities. This clearly raises the question of vocational rehabilitation services. Vocational rehabilitation services begin with a comprehensive evaluation of each child, having a clear picture of their strengths and limitations. In each case, the outcome of individual evaluation would undoubtedly offer very different recommendations.

President Barack Obama will visit Puerto Rico on June 14, 2011 at the invitation of Governor Luis Fortuño. Obama is the first sitting president to visit the U.S. Commonwealth in decades.

Dominican Nurses Reunion

The Dominican Nurses in Action (DANIA) held their first reunion in the City of Houston during the weekend of May 27. Colleagues and friends met to give honor to the profession they have dedicated their lives to serving. The group was formed in 2008.

DANIA’s Executive Director, Dr. Paula Abraham said that organization members share a unique vision of enhancing the health and wellbeing of Dominicans.

DANIA paid homage to Theona Frederick, RN. Ms. Frederick is recognized as a true pioneer in the nursing community. She was born and raised in Dominica and graduated from nursing school in 1962. Ms. Frederick progressed in the profession and was appointed Coordinator of Ministry of Health in 1983. In 1995, Ms. Frederick received Dominca’s National Award “The Services Medal of Honor”.

Lecoint-Robinson reminded the group that as nurses, they play an important role in healthcare system in terms of comfort to patients. She counsel them, “Put Dominica first; Our homeland needs our expertise.”

------BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA A PROCLAMATION The fabric of our Nation has been woven together and enriched by the diversity of our people. Our legacy as a Nation of immigrants is part of what makes America strong, and during National Caribbean American Heritage Month, we celebrate the rich history and vibrant culture Caribbean Americans have brought to our shores.

Immigrants from Caribbean countries have come to America for centuries. Some came through the bondage of slavery. Others willfully left behind the world they knew in search of a better life. Regardless of the circumstances of their arrival, they had faith their descendants would have a chance to realize their greatest potential.

Caribbean Americans have prospered in every sector of our society and enhanced our national character while maintaining the multiethnic and multicultural traditions of their homelands. They are doctors and lawyers, public servants and scientists, and athletes and service members. Their successes inspire individuals in the United States and abroad, and we take pride in the contributions Caribbean Americans continue to make to the narrative of our Nation’s progress. Their achievements are borne of hard work and ambition, and my Administration is committed to creating pathways to prosperity that ensure future generations of Caribbean Americans, along with all Americans, are able to pursue and realize the American dream.

In the infamous 1712 speech delivered by Willie Lynch on the banks of the James River in Virginia, the British plantation owner elaborated on “The Making of a Slave”. In this letter, he taught other plantation owners his “fool proof” method for controlling their “live stock”. In this scathing narrative, he discusses in detail the method of utilizing differences within the enslaved community to divide and conquer the cultural mindset.

How has this “teaching” affected the way in which we learn as a culture? Let’s examine carefully how each step of the control methodology has influenced our cultural education.

The first and most important lesson is to understand the value of each enslaved person in terms of property and production. What are we really worth? We must understand our value as we are exceptional in our contribution to every level of society. Our ability to learn is extraordinary, our “learning curve” is steep and we adapt well to any social, cultural and geographical region. But we fail to see our true value in these critical capabilities. Learning information efficiently, applying it effectively and adapting to environments quickly are valuable assets that are necessary for achievement. We fall short, however, by “settling” for average accomplishment. We become complacent

and our performance remains mediocre. We do not, as a descendent culture, seek excellence. Our choice is to seek approval from the historical cultural mindset that uses our capabilities for profit.

How do we address this egregious error in cultural valuation and validation? We must return to the generational value system established by our elders. The elders defined our identity, enforced our self worth and demanded excellence in every accomplishment. This requires the abandonment of any external definition that is contrary to the high standard of our elders. We must acknowledge each person’s value, cultivate that value and encourage excellence in achievement.

As we move forward, we must instill in our youth the generational value that we received from our elders. We must define their learning abilities, strengthen their learning curve and protect them as they adapt. We must admonish them when they “settle” for mediocrity and praise them when they strive for perfection.

When we examine the next lesson in the Willie Lynch letter, we will understand the power of difference within our culture. We will learn how division and strife have prevented us from collective success. We will also learn that difference is the foundation for true cultural unity.

CIF Awards Caribbean Leaders June 25 The Caribbean Impact Foundation will close out National Caribbean American Heritage Month by hosting its 3rd Annual Awards & Community Forum at the International Trade Center, 11110 Bellaire Boulevard in Houston on Saturday, June 25, 2011 from 6:30-9:00pm. The catered affair will pay tribute to Caribbean and American members of the Houston community for their outstanding leadership and recent successes.

CIF is a coalition of Caribbean individuals, organizations and businesses with heritage or interest in the Caribbean. The CIF Vision, according to founding President Marilyn Douglas-Jones, is “to uplift the image of the Caribbean Diaspora and galvanize the local community.” CIF achieves this through the Mission as a series of activities that “promote intercultural awareness, support scholarship at all levels, facilitate critical relief to needy populations, and mentor youth.”

CIF prides itself on being the group to initiate the celebration of Caribbean American

Heitage Month in the state of Texas in collaboration with the Institute for Caribbean Studies in Washington, DC and the Caribbean Heritage Organization in Los Angeles, California. As a result, CIF was able to participate in creating a history making futures exercise in Washington, DC in 2007 under the theme Vision 2020 which was then submitted to Caribbean government leaders as a printed document, which Pres. DouglasJones also assisted in editing.

The CIF collaboration with the LA and DC Caribbean leadership also afforded CIF the opportunity to host a series of receptions in Houston in 2009 for British Caribbean nano-artist Willard Wigan who creates microsculptures inside the eye of regular needles.

So what do you need to do before hurricane and flooding actually happen?

Derek Hodge, who died earlier this week, and former Gov. Juan Luis were political giants in the territory, and both did tremendous things to modernize the Virgin Islands and bring greater prosperity to our citizens.”

Governor Juan F. Luis (age 70) died Saturday June 3, 2011 at the hospital, which bears his name. He became the 23rd governor the of the U.S. Virgin islands in 1978 upon the death of Governor Cyril E. King. Thereafter, he was elected to two conservative four-year terms, which made him the third elected governor in USVI history.

“Lt. Governor Hodge was one of the most respected men in the territory. His wise counsel, sharp wit, friendship and political savvy will be missed and mourned by a great number of Virgin Islanders, myself included,” DeJongh said.

Hodge’s life touched a broad spectrum of Virgin Islanders. He was an attorney and a Senator. Later, he served as Lt. Governor of the US Virgin Islands from 1987 to 1995 under Gov. Alexander Farrelly administration.

Delegate to Congress Donna Christensen said today that she was deeply saddened at the passing of former Lt. Governor Derek Hodge who was a childhood friend and political colleague. He was a well known Virgin Islands attorney and also served as President of the Virgin Islands Legislature.

According to the St. Croix Source, Governor John DeJongh noted that this was the second loss for the territory in a short time.

He said, “We have lost two great Virgin Islands leaders in one week. Former Lt. Gov.

“Derek and I go back a long way, we grew up together and as adults, we worked on each other’s political campaigns, helping to get each other elected,” Congresswoman Christensen said.

The Minister was speaking at Friday’s (May 20) official launch of the Jamaican Diaspora Convention 2011, with the theme “One Nation: Jamaica and its Diaspora in Partnership”, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, New Kingston. The biennial Jamaica Diaspora Convention will be held June 15 – 17 at the Sunset Jamaica Grande, Ocho Rios.

The convention, which has, as its mandate, the expansion of partnerships between Jamaicans at home and in the Diaspora, was last held in 2008. This year will mark the first time that it is being held outside of Kingston. The activities will include plenary sessions, as well as panel discussions and presentations by members of government, regional Diaspora representatives and specially invited presenters.

Senator Malahoo Forte noted that the government has progressively adjusted its foreign policy to reflect the significant role which the Jamaican Diaspora has been playing at different levels.

Earl Jarrett, Chairman of the Jamaica Diaspora Foundation, said that issues such as the governance structure and funding of the Jamaican Diaspora entities, as well as the engagement of the Diaspora communities were among those to be discussed at the convention.

Anguillians Want Independence from Britian The Chief Minister of Anguilla’s frustration with Britian’s delayed approval of his 2010 budget has led him to renew his calls for independence for the island. Chief Minister Hubert Hughes said the approval was a little too late and the island lost out on revenue and a deal with the EU on a fiscal package and a deal with a regional bank. The overseas territory’s leader said he was “very disillusioned and frustrated” with the British administration for Anguilla. “My commitment now is to press on with my program for self determination.” he added. The budget was drawn up in December of last year but only approved a few days ago.

A Caribbean Electricity Grid, Is It Possible?

By Sylvanus Donaie OLC, June 2011: Can the Caribbean islands receive its electrical power through viable interconnected electrical grids?

Another concept is to connect from the Florida into Cuba and then distribute southward to Haiti, Dominican Republic, and Jamaica.

With the rising cost of electricity which is directly associated with the increasing cost of fossil fuels, this vision is beginning to move the talking to studying and implementing.

A Caribbean grid requires a central system operator to understand what is currently in the grid, what is online, and keep account of who is buying what and where. Logistical policies have to be formulated such as the rights to connect to the grid.

In 2010, the World Bank produced a report looking at opportunities to connect electricity systems across Caribbean nations. The report argues that interconnection, especially between the islands of the Lesser Antilles, could be highly economical. This is welcome news to Caribbean governments. The small size of Caribbean electricity markets is a leading factor behind high energy costs on each island.

They are many concepts on the drawing board. One concept is to build a hydropower generator in Guyana which will connect to Trinidad and Tobago and then go north to Puerto Rico and all islands in between. Additional power can be generated from thermal power in Saint Lucia and Nevis, hydro-power from Dominica, and wind power from Barbados and Jamaica.

In recent months, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, and the Dominican Republic have been exploring ways to connect their respective electricity grids using an undersea cable. In Virgin Islands, an undersea cable supplies electricity from St. Thomas to St. John and Water Island.

In support of this project, the United States’ Department of Energy (DOE) will provide technical support, including hosting a workshop to begin exploring the potential for a Caribbean-wide transmission system that would provide the region with access to electricity from renewable energy sources.

DOE will facilitate a discussion on ways to develop policies, regulations and standards to ensure the use of safe, reliable and efficient power.

REDjet Appeals to CARICOM Amid continuing delays in starting operations in Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago, REDjet’s CEO and Chairman Ian Burns has turned to CARICOM for assistance.

Burns stressed that travel throughout CARICOM must be affordable for a person of “average socioeconomic standing” and airlines like REDjet are therefore needed.

He has written to acting Secretary General Lolita Applewhaite saying that due to the critical nature of air transport infrastructure and “the widely reported obstructionism REDjet has faced trying to enter many regional markets”, the airline wanted consideration given to a motion to support open competition for inter-regional travel, as exists in much of extra-regional travel though open skies agreements.

“I am sure that you will agree that we require a new approach to the provision of air services in the Caribbean, movement away from protectionism and the reliance on state supported intra-regional travel,” he said.“REDjet sees our low fares airline as being a major regional asset which creates new potential in the region for the provision of affordable and sustainable air transport.”

“The motion would include an aspect that positive political support be given to all carriers within the region to have access to every state in accordance with the Treaty of Chaguaramas insofar as it pertains to fair treatment of businesses from a Member State, as would be granted to a business resident in that state,” he wrote. REDjet has so far been unable to secure approval to begin services to Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago. It is currently only flying between Barbados and Guyana, having started that service on May 10.

The Jamaican aviation authorities have indicated, after admitting delaying consideration of the matter to facilitate the signing of the Air Jamaica/Caribbean Airlines deal, that a decision should be made this week.

The authorities in Port of Spain have given no word, even after assurances from Works and Transport Minister Austin ‘Jack’ Warner that it would likely have been given late last month.

Burns further argued that national and regional state-owned airlines, while providing a basic level of transport, have been a great burden on tax payers and, in large part, have failed to develop profitable business models. The airline executive said consumers have been disadvantaged by the lack of competition, resulting in rising fares, a lack of direct connectivity with carriers and a lack of capacity in the market.

REDjet last week announced that it had scrapped plans to operate flights between Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago, and postponed the service between Barbados and Jamaica until July 24.

However, the airline’s supporters are pushing for the carrier to get into the skies and have started an online petition, ‘Freedom of Caribbean Air Travel’ petition, to try to nudge the two countries into action.

The plan is to eventually forward the completed petition to the prime ministers and relevant ministers in Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago.

Police Face-off with Residents in Trinidad

Police and some 40 residents of Carenage, Trinidad came to an angry face-off yesterday following an incident in which the police allegedly shot and killed 21-year-old Daaniyaal Coltes not far from his home.

Investigating officers claim Coltes was being sought in connection with several murders in the Carenage and Diego Martin districts. Family members, however, denied he had been part of any criminal activity. The heated clash ignited just after noon hours after police reportedly noticed Coltes brandishing a gun at the corner of Smith Hill and the Western Main Road. Police claim he shot at them and they returned fire, hitting him. He was rushed to the St James Medical Facility where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

As news of the incident spread, some angry residents, among them Coltes’ parents, mounted protest action against what they said was an unjust killing. The protesting residents blocked the Main Road with logs and debris which they set on fire, resulting in a heavy back up of traffic proceeding either way.

had senselessly killed Coltes. His mother, Roma, described him as a reformed person.

She said her son had followed the wrong company at a young age and had landed in prison. “He used to do bad things when he was young but since he came out he really changed his life,” she said. Coltes’ brother, Sayif Noriega, who had been with him up to shortly before the shooting, said that they had just returned from a party when a black van stopped and two men emerged.

He said the men did not identify themselves as police officers. Noriega said one of their friends shouted that the men were police officers. Noriega said he ran up the hill overlooking a nearby river. He said he heard four gunshots and when he looked down saw one of the men, whom he recognized as a police officer, standing over his brother’s body.

Another resident said when he heard the commotion he feared his son might have been involved. He claimed he ran after the officer and saw him pointing a gun in Coltes’ direction as he hid in the bushes. He said he begged and pleaded with the officer to spare Coltes’ life but the officer ignored him and fired four shots. Residents claimed they are being treated cruelly by police.

They say they have no intention of accepting cruelty from police despite being already ‘under threat’.

Rihanna’s ‘Man Down’ Controversy Heats Up

Rihanna’s latest video “Man Down,” is in the midst of the controversy after shocking the music world with the graphic image of her murdering a man minutes after he tried to rape her.

Watchdogs including Parents Television Council (PTC) and Industry Ears slam the video and asked BET to pull the video from the air.

In a release PTC in conjunction with Industry Ears stated “Man Down is an inexcusable, shock-only, shoot-and-kill theme song.

In my 30 years of viewing BET, I have never witnessed such a cold, calculated execution of murder in primetime.”

BET Networks has issued a statement clarifying its decision to air Rihanna’s Man Down video.

“BET Networks has a comprehensive set of standards and guidelines that are applied to all of our content. The Rihanna “Man Down” video complied with these guidelines and was approved for air. At the same

time, it is clear that the “Man Down” video has sparked a passionate dialogue and we will continue this conversation with our audience on “106 & Park.”

In a post from the BET website, Rihanna stated, “I didn’t go into it to make a controversial video. I wanted to make a minimovie, something raw and artistic. The music industry isn’t exactly Parents R Us! We have the freedom to make art, LET US! It’s your job to make sure they don’t turn out like US.” Rihanna further explained herself on a 106 call. “Man Down’ is a song about a girl who committed a murder that she regrets and is completely remorseful about it,” Rihanna explains. “In making that into a mini-movie or a video, we needed to go back to why it happened, because obviously she’s not a cold-blooded killer...and we decided to hone in on a very serious matter that people are afraid to address.”

Just last year in New Jersey, in a branch outside of Atlantic City, a Honduran immigrant was elected to head that chapter, while a Caucasian male in his thirty’s took the chair of the Jackson State University Chapter in Mississippi.

In its beginnings, the NAACP was founded by a mixed group including males, females, African Americans, and Caucasian Jews, who came together in response to the continuing practice of sadistic lynching in the United States and the race riot of 1908 in Springfield, Illinois. We know that Springfield is the final resting place of the 16th President of the United States of America, Abraham Lincoln, also known as the great emancipator for his role in curtailing the expansion of African enslavement in the country.

So it was not by accident that the NAACP was chartered on Lincoln’s birthday, February 12, 1909, following that horrific racial riot in Springfield. In addition to the history of racial tensions, recorded lynching in the U.S. went on between 1882 and 1981 with the randomized lynching of Michael Donald of Mobile, Alabama. And even though it was not recorded as a lynching, many civil rights advocates insist that it was in the case of James Byrd of Jasper, Texas in 1998. Today, there are those who still question the relevance of the NAACP. On the other hand, others are thankful to the visionary leadership of NAACP Chairman Julian Bond, who not long ago, initiated a push for greater diversity in the leadership of the organization. And as a result, we now have Victor Diaz, a 32 year old DomincanAmerican as the sitting President of the Waterbury Chapter of the NAACP in Connecticut. Diaz admitted to his own uncertainty about his likelihood of prevailing, but by the time the votes were all in, he reportedly

Under a new and broadened focus, NAACP branches have been aggressively recruiting new immigrants, gays, and young people who all grew up in realities far removed from the landmark Supreme Court’s decision of 1954, which outlawed segregation in schools. Today, positions of leadership in the NAACP once held only by African Americans are now being filled by members of other racial or ethnic groups.

Julian Bond was clearly ahead of his time in this respect. In this world of a continuum arrangement of privileged against underprivileged people, I believe it is becoming clearer as we go that discriminatory practices among people have less to do with country of origin, ethnicity, gender, or even sexual orientation, per se. In my mind, these are simply justifications used by those who seek to prevail. At least from my point of view, the practice of discrimination seems more about imposing power and dominance over anything or any matter deemed important to living on earth. Notice how important it is to the perpetrators to “dehumanize” those against whom they would discriminate. It makes the practice “easier” to carry out. Discriminating against other human beings in one sense can be seen as an operative method of eliminating competitors for goods, services, and space on earth. And as we have seen in documented history this “competition” can be very brutal at times.

The NAACP seeks to represent all groups which have been historically maligned by discriminatory practices in one way or the other. And the new initiative on diversity in leadership can be viewed as an acknowledgement among the NAACP leadership that America’s social fabric is no longer about just “blacks and whites,” in its traditional sense, as some would call it. There are many other groups of human beings now sitting at the table; and my best guess is that we won’t be going back to the traditional paradigm of 1909 when the NAACP was first organized.

Julian Bond may be right about that. We don’t need to have a separate civil rights organization for every group that has a legitimate axe to grind. There is one already in place; all we need is to learn how to use it effectively! The critical question might be, how many people are willing to make this turn in the road being traveled by the NAACP? I guess we’ll find out further down the road.

In the travel industry, there’s a common saying that ‘you haven’t lived until you’ve cruised’. While only about 20% of North American’s have been on a cruise, those who’ve been tend to sail over and over again.

But, due to cruise ship size limitations, there are only so many places the larger cruise lines can go. Cruising, by far, is one of the best ways to see the world – multiple cities and countries can be experienced within a matter of days and, when sailing with an American-based cruise line in Europe, the cost is significantly better since everything is based on the U.S. dollar instead of the Euro. Accommodations, meals, and entertainment are already included in the cruise rate.

But, traditional big ship cruising has its limitations in Europe. The big ships are limited to the larger ports accessible by the ocean, taking cruisers on the perimeter of Europe.

Even then, the many ports of call are far from the major cities. For example, the nearest port to Rome is over an hour away.

Similarly, the ports closest to London are just as far.

For a more authentic European vacation, river cruises are the way to go. It’s the fastest growing segment of the travel industry and is appealing to both seasoned and novice cruisers alike. For those who’ve felt they’ve ‘been there and done that’ when it comes to big ship cruising, it’s a welcome change and is typically an upgrade from

However, there are also river cruises in China (Yangtze), Southeast Asia (Mekong), Egypt (Nile), Brazil (Amazon), as well as right here in the U.S. (Columbia and Mississippi).

The river cruise experience is completely different from big ship cruising. Unlike the steam ships and paddleboats that may come to mind that previously sailed on the Mississippi River, the river cruise ships of today are like no other ships out there. Those based in Europe are upscale yet casual, and much more inclusive than the big cruise lines. No formal nights, no set dining time, and no crowds are the norm since the average river cruise ship holds less than 200 passengers. Depending on the river cruise line, beer and wine are typically included as are daily excursions. The vast majority of the rooms have either a window or balcony giving most passengers a scenic view of historical castles and towns along the way.

And, the great thing about sailing on a river instead of an ocean is that the ships dock in the heart of these historical towns and cities allowing passengers to experience historical Europe in a way that most visitors to Europe will never witness.

However, similar to the rest of the cruise industry, no two river cruise lines are alike.

Each one has its own personality when it comes to pricing, service, and overall rating.

For those wanting a new and unique travel experience, a river cruise just might be the ticket. But, act fast! It’s the hottest ticket around and doesn’t have any plans to cool off any time soon.

Dad, Daddy, Pop, Poppa, Papa, Pops! There are so many names to embody one very dear person – Father. We currently live in a society where often fathers are ridiculed and portrayed as not being too smart or not quite as capable as Mom. However, Mom could never be Mom without Dad. One of the meanings of the word “father” is originator and that is who Dad is - the one in whom the seed began, and when it was implanted in Mom, it brought forth a new life. Dad, who often underestimates his own importance within the family, is irreplaceable. Sons need a father to train them and model for them what manhood looks like. One of the most important characteristics that God the Father demonstrated to us, however, is His presence. God is described as being Omnipresent; i.e. present everywhere. He visited with and communed with man in the Garden of Eden. He accompanied the children of Israel on their entire journey through the wilderness, manifesting Himself as a thick, protective cloud during the heat of the day and a warm, comforting, way-lighting fire during the cold desert nights. Throughout the Bible God went to lengths to make His presence known to mankind and the fact that He was always present and desiring a personal relationship with each person. “…

It says: “I care about you; I put your needs ahead of my own; you are important to me – you are the apple of my eye”. It says: “I’m here for you; I’m your Father; I love you”. “The LORD is like a father to his children, tender and compassionate …” Psalm 103:13 (NLT) Dad, you are special! Even if your children do not openly express it, they love you and they would be lost without you. Even if they are all grown up, your children still need you to be a part of their lives. Fatherhood is one of the best gifts that you have been given.

An Open Letter to the 2011 Graduates Dear Graduates: Congratulations on your graduation. You have accomplished a great goal and your parents and community are proud of you. You have reached a milestone in your life and now entering adulthood. There is no turning back. As you approach this new phase in your life, here are a few words of wisdom.

1.If you believe in a high power, put him/ her in your life first. He/She is with you 24 hours a day. You can speak to him/her in the quiet of the morning, or in the darkness of the night, he/she will help, encourage, and comfort you.

4. Be courageous in all that you do.

Traditional Roles: Slavery for Women, Lordship for Men

who will do what their mothers did for their fathers. It’s important to note, however, that the majority of these men didn’t grow up with their mothers as CEOs and executives working 11-hour days. I can understand when a man wants, or expects that kind of treatment, because it’s the only example he knows, but admittedly the thought of doing everything, I saw my mother do, is daunting.

This was the cheeky statement from one of my male friends, when I started a discussion on Facebook about traditional roles in the home. Now, he said that’s what “a wise man in UWI’s ‘small’ cafeteria once told the ladies”, but, if you ask the average West Indian man what the appropriate role for women in a marriage or relationship is, you can bet on a similar answer.

For some women, the institution of marriage is just another form of slavery. Men may face the pressure of providing for their home, but women worry about who’s going to do the chores and take care of the children when that time comes. In last week’s article “Marriage: Attractive, Archaic or Irrelevant” by Afiya Ray inOutlish, a man she interviewed said, “I had my wife on probation for 13 years before I decided to go through with this marriage thing… I was able to see that she could wash and cook and her body held up after our child”.

For obvious reasons, this made some people step-up, and while it doesn’t necessarily reflect the views of all men out there, it does remind us that women are judged on their ability to ‘take care’ of a home, in addition to their Coca Cola bottle shape. On the other hand, do men battle with expectations of them being a pseudo butler or that their women will think differently of them, if they can’t fix a bust-up pipe? I think not.

One friend told me that a ‘friend’ of hers recently told her that he didn’t think she was the kind of woman to come home to cook and clean, since she ran her own business.

While he was proud of her ambition, he considered her ‘non-traditional’, and, thus, not necessarily traditional wife material. What pissed her off was that he seemed to consider it to be a big deal, because his mom always ‘took care’ of his father.

“I’m not saying the man can’t cook or clean either,” he added. “But the woman has to do more work.”

Some might say that’s 1950s’ thinking, but in 2011 men and women continue to argue about house roles. For example, when a male friend recently posted a Facebook status, saying that he needed to find a wife ASAP because doing laundry was such a pain. I expected him to get some flack, but the barely contained anger in the responses from some of his female friends surprised even me.

If the Chemistry Is Right Why am I telling you this? It is because I’m scared.

The truth be known, I have liked him for as long time, but our conversations were so platonic and wonderful, I didn’t want to ruin it. But, now we know how we feel about each other, my fear is what next. When we meet, what if he doesn’t like me? What if, I have certain ‘ways’ that he doesn’t like? It could ruin everything. It’s weird to feel this way to someone whom I’ve never met. And yet, someone I’ve known for so long.

From a practical perspective, women know the importance of maintaining a clean home and a full belly. However, I think the bone of contention lies with being defined by traditional roles.

While traditional roles may be a sore point for modern women, for older women, it’s considered the secret to success. When I asked my aunt, who has been married for over 30 years for her opinion, she told me: “Keep his belly full and his balls empty.

Take care of yourself because he ain’t blind.

He will look, but he must be able to say that what waiting for him at home is better than what is being offered to him outside.”

I haven’t met a man yet who disagrees with that statement, and I don’t think that I ever will, but while I think it makes sense, my inner feminist is still a tad peeved by it. This is mainly because I think it implies that the onus is solely on the woman to make a relationship work.

As a single, twenty-something-year-old woman, I sometimes wish that I had a man around just so I wouldn’t have to do everything in my apartment. Putting together furniture, hanging photos, lifting boxes, disposing of dead mice? Gross! In fact, I’ll gladly do five loads of laundry or cook for ten people before I pick up a hammer.

Most modern women, myself included, expect that our partners will be able to shoulder some of the domestic responsibilities around the house, like cooking and laundry, instead of relaxing, while we do housework.

To tell us that this expectation implies that we are not “the type to cook, clean or take care of a man” is an insult.

My aunt, who I mentioned before, and her husband both work, but if he wants stew chicken for dinner and he ‘gets home’ before my aunt, which is usually the case, he will take the chicken out of the fridge, defrost it and season it, and he will do the dishes afterward. He also helps in other areas, like remembering to put his whites and darks in the appropriate basket so when it’s time for her to do laundry, she doesn’t have to sort his clothes. For sure, she handles the cooking and “jamming”, and the responsibilities of five children, but not without his help.

I think most women would welcome this arrangement, and that any man whose wife or girlfriend has a career would think that sharing responsibilities is only fair. However, it is human nature to stereotype and assign roles based on gender, so frankly I don’t even know if moving away from traditional roles is truly possible unless circumstances demand it. I have been friends with someone whom I met through a social networking site over 7 years ago.

In the first two years of us, we talked on the phone on a very regular basis. It was always friendly but long chats. He introduced his friends and family to me and would encourage them to talk to me as well. However, I considered him as a very good friend. And yet, we have never met.

My marriage is ending; I am actually going through a divorce.

In my experiences, the men that I like online, I am usually disgusted by in person. I should say that, I’ve corresponded with one man for a few years before we met in person. Guyanese Accuses Egyptian Man of Hotel Assault

By Stabroek News A Guyanese woman employed as a maid at the Pierre Hotel in New York, has accused an Egyptian businessman of sexual assault resulting in him being arrested on Monday and he is expected to appear in court tomorrow.

A report in the Wall Street Journal said that the 44-year-old woman of Guyana, who lives in Brooklyn, alleges that Mahmoud Abdel-Salam Omar, the board chairman of an Egyptian salt-production company, locked her in his room following which he groped her and rubbed against her after she went to deliver three boxes of tissues.

The incident occurred last Sunday although the woman had reported the incident to a hotel staff supervisor that night, she was told that she would have to wait until Monday to

inform the security supervisor, officials said.

Police arrested Omar, 74, later that day.

Omar was arraigned just before midnight Tuesday in Manhattan Criminal Court on two counts of sexual abuse and one count of forcible touching. He was granted US$25,000 cash bail and ordered to turn over flight documents including his passport; he is required to remain in New York City.

The supervisor has since been suspended for the delay in reporting the matter and the hotel has agreed to equip all room attendants with panic buttons in the wake of incident and the one involving former International Monetary Fund chief Dominique StraussKahn who has been accused of sexual assault against another maid at the Sofitel Hotel in New York.

I have been doing some research on those places, the history, places to visit and the lifestyle. What keeps coming up is the way of life and the diet of the Mediterraneans. Of course that piqued my interest and my first response was how I can share this information with my readers? This is what I learned.

The Mediterranean diet is known to help you lose weight, live longer and lower your risks of heart disease and cancer. Research has shown that after a recent analysis of more than 1.5 million healthy adults the results showed that following this diet has reduced the risk of overall cardiovascular mortality and a reduced incidence of cancer.

These are the foods and drinks traditionally consumed by people living in the countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea. This diet pattern is closely tied traditionally to areas of olive oil cultivation in the region.

The distinguishing features of this diet are: • Use of extra virgin oil - Researchers at the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia found that oleocanthal, a compound in olive oil, may reduce inflammation, which could help prevent conditions like heart diseases, diabetes, arthritis, Alzheimer’s and auto-immune diseases as well as certain cancers.

• Use of olives, nuts and flaxseeds - Omega 3 Fatty acids. They are found in abundance in a Mediterranean diet. It has many health benefits and has been shown to reduce the incidence of heart attacks, blood clots, hypertension and strokes and may prevent certain forms of cancer and lower the risk of neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s disease.

• Whole grains, pasta and bread - Are served without apology. They eat a lot of pasta, rice,

• Fruits and Vegetables in Season – They eat a variety of vegetables such as tomatoes, mushrooms, cabbage, cauliflower, and eggplant. A Mediterranean table is always laden with fresh fruit and is the preferred dessert of choice. They also enjoy a small portion of gelato or sorbet.

• Wine - The diet typically includes a moderate amount of wine. This means no more than 5 ounces or one glass daily for women and 10 ounces or two glasses for men. More than this may increase the risk of health problems, including increased risk of certain type of cancers. If you cannot drink alcohol drink purple grape juice instead.

• Herbs - Rosemary, oregano, sage, garlic, coriander and marjoram are used frequently in their meals. The herbs are also rich in health promoting substances.

• Enjoyment of Meals - Grounded in the principles of enjoyment and pleasure, they enjoy spending hours around the table with family and friends, savoring their meals.

• Exercise - The Mediterranean’s walk everywhere, to the markets, to visit friends, they like to take country strolls and literally loves to walk.

You can start this minute eating and living like a Mediterranean; you need not follow me to Europe. Enjoy your summer.

Men are 24 percent less likely than women to have visited a doctor within the past year and are 22 percent more likely to have neglected their cholesterol tests.

Men: Time For A Tune Up? This month, I want to focus on Men’s Health, especially men of the African Diaspora. Moreover, this month, in the United States, we are celebrating and recognizing the many contributions that CaribbeanAmericans have made to this country. In this spirit, I am making a plea to our men to do a little “preventive maintenance” on themselves.

Remember men, the Houston Caribbean Festival is just around the corner, and you can only jump up, attend jouvert, and play “mas”, if you are running at peak performance.

We know that a significant number of men’s serious health problems can be detected and treated if awareness of these problems is more widespread. If you’re reluctant to visit your physician for regular screenings and routine care, remember this; preventive health care not only prolongs life, it also improves your quality of life. Investing in your health today is a very smart move for you and your loved ones.

Screening tests can find diseases early, when they’re easiest to treat. Talk to your doctor about which preventive medical tests you need to stay healthy.

Body Mass Index: Your body mass index, or BMI, is a measure of your body fat based on your height and weight. It is used to screen for obesity.

Blood Pressure: Have your blood pressure checked at least annually. High blood pressure increases your chance of getting heart or kidney disease, and places you at higher risk for stroke. If you have high blood pressure, you may need medication to control it.

Cardiovascular Disease: Beginning at age 45 and through age 79, ask your doctor if you should take aspirin every day to help lower your risk of a heart attack. How much aspirin you should take depends on your age, your health, and your lifestyle.

Cholesterol: Once you turn 35 (or once you turn 20 if you have risk factors like diabetes, history of heart disease, tobacco use, high blood pressure, or BMI of 30 or over), have your cholesterol checked regularly. High blood cholesterol is one of the major risk factors for heart disease.

People need to be honest in the courtship phase about how important traditional roles are to them. Fellas need to realize that no woman they meet is going to be or do things exactly like mommy, and women need to articulate to their partner what kind of help they expect around the house, early on. When it comes to traditional roles in the home, a little cooperation around the house can go a long way to getting quality “jamming ” on the regular.

Caribbean Mango Chutney

Caribbean Mango Sauce

INGREDIENTS

1/4 cup chopped red onion 1/4 cup lime juice 1/4 cup vinegar 1 1/2 cups ripe mango, peeled, chopped 1 tablespoon honey 2 teaspoons gingerroot, chopped 2 teaspoons chopped fresh mint leaves DIRECTIONS

Combine all ingredients in medium bowl.

Cover and refrigerate at least 4 hours or overnight. Serve with chicken, turkey or pork.

INGREDIENTS

6 whole mango, peeled and seeded 1 Scot Bonnet pepper 4 whole lime, for juice 2 cups orange juice ¼ cup apple vinegar 1 tsp Adobo 2 cups water 2 table aalt DIRECTIONS

In large pot add scot bonnet pepper, water and salt. Allow to boil for 15 minutes, then drain but save 3/4 cup of boiled mix.

Pour in the saved water and all ingredients except vinegar in a blender. Puree mixture.

Return mixture to pot and allow simmer on low heat for 10 minutes. Stir constantly.

Remove from heat and add in vinegar.

Stir. Allow to cool. Keeps in refrigerated for up to four months.

Grilled Tilapia with Mango Salsa INGREDIENTS

4 fresh tilapia fillets 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil 1/3 cup white wine 2 tsp jerk seasoning 1 tbsp parsley flakes 8 oz can sliced pineapple in its own juice

Serve as sweet and spicy for chicken, pork, or fish.

Island Green Mango Salad

Salsa: 2/3 cup chopped mango 2 tbsp lime juice 2 tbsp orange juice 4 tsp scot bonnet pepper, chopped 4 tsp red onions, chopped 2 tsp red bell pepper, chopped 2 tsp green bell pepper, chopped 1 tsp parsley flakes 1 tsp black pepper

INGREDIENTS

5 Mango, thinly sliced 1/4 onion, thinly sliced 2 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil 1/2 cup vinegar Salt and black pepper 1 tbsp. scot bonnet pepper DIRECTIONS

DIRECTIONS

Mix olive oil, wine and parsley then marinate fish in the mixture for 1 hour.

Sprinkle fish with the jerk seasoning and pineapple juice. Place fish on well oiled hot grill. Baste oil marinade on fish. Place pineapple slices on grill. Flip fish over and sprinkle with remaining seasonings.

Add pineapple juice and oil marinade as on first side. Flip pineapple slices.

Combine mango and onion in a large bowl.

Add vinegar and olive oil. Add salt and pepper to taste. Optional: Add scot bonnet for sharp taste. Let stand for about 20 minutes. Mix and serve.

Serve fish with pineapple slices and top with mango salsa. To make salsa mix all ingredients well and refrigerate for an hour or more before serving.

Even if they were to attain free work orientation training on an “on the job” status, for example, the simple cost bus fares and lunches would immediately outstretch the family’s limited “pensionado” income.
