And now this! Over the past few months a public dialog has stirred up in the community about what being Caribbean is all about. Who is considered Caribbean? What role do the Caribbean organizations play in the community? How organizations can attract members? How can the existing organizations be relevant to the community at large, particularly to our younger generation, and how can the many organizations in the Houston area work together?

One forum which addressed this recently was hosted by the Jamaica Foundation of Houston (JFH). A spirited meeting was held at Cool Runnings Restaurant in which a cross section of the community met to discuss issues that exist within the Jamaica Community and for the most part the Caribbean Diaspora at large. A panel of JFH Executive members, Jamaican leaders and community members responded to questions from a room full of attendees.

I wish to stress that the issues discussed are not unique to the Jamaican community. In my many travels across Houston, I hear those same concerns being raised within other organizations and the community in general. I am very satisfied with the outcome. Kudos to the JFH leadership for spearheading this townhall meeting. Likewise, I believe many attendees came away with a renewed sense of what the community’s concerns are. This is the beginning of the dialog, let us keep it going. Issues within our community cannot be resolved by sweeping them under the rug; they must be acknowledged and dealt with, with an air towards resolution. Remember, perception is everything, and if someone perceives it, it is real to them.

In keeping with this theme, there has been discussion in the community about the approximate size of the Caribbean population in Houston, and how we can use our size to effect political, economic and other changes to benefit us? We just saw a large number from the Diaspora at the Houston Carnival. If you think, it was packed; well, this is just a small sample of our Caribbean people. So, how can we prove scientifically to others that we are a strong presence here and need to be taken seriously? Here comes One Love Caribbean News.

For the month of July 2011, we have undertaken a demographic and media survey which at completion will allow us to analyze what the potential size of the Caribbean population is in the Greater Houston area, and allow us to use this data to advocate for ourselves. I strongly encourage you to stand up and be counted during this time. The survey can be found on page 11 of this edition. Better yet, you can also go online at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/XN7WXPL to complete the survey. Moreover, if you participate, you

will be eligible to win a i-Pod or a $200 American Express Cash card. We need to use the power of our numbers to effect the kind of change that we want to see in our community. The only way we can do so is by knowing our true numbers.

August 2011 marks the beginning of our fourth season of publication.

In celebration, we are hosting the first ever Caribbean Empowerment Conference (see conference ad). The conference will focus on topics of self-empowerment such as personal health, finance, self esteem and relationships. We have invited four dynamic speakers in these respective fields to speak at the conference on topics that affect our daily lives. Our special guest speaker hails from Trinidad via New York and will be addressing relationship issues within the Caribbean community. You will not want to miss her presentation. A Caribbean breakfast will be served.

I want to extend congratulation to Baytown St. Lucians, Daniel “Viv-Viv” Francois and Jenitha St. Martin being newlyweds. VivViv is the defacto mayor of Baytown. It appears that whole of Baytown attended. But, I just have to say this. When I first met Jenitha, I truly saw my dad’s mother; they looked so much alike.

So you know what my next question was; where in St. Lucia are you from? BINGO! To the T! Same spots! Morne Sion. “Wah a ting”! Well, now you can see Jenitha picture on page 9. Congrats.

Also, I want congratulate Yvonne and Tony Clarke of Tropical Diner Restaurant on their official open in the Katy area. But better yet, they just celebrated twenty-five years of marriage. So, the question is “When is the party?”

Finally, I want to encourage you and you encourage others to attend the play “JUDGEMENT” at the Stafford Civic Center on July 15, 2011. I understand it is guava season, but please make this an exception. You will not regret it.

One Love Caribbean News Launches Demographic Survey OLC July 1 -- “True or False: Is the Caribbean population of Houston is vibrant and powerful?” The time has come to prove this statement true beyond all doubt. For many years the Caribbean population of Houston has had to play second fiddle to other communities, and as a result, we have not been able to properly display our rich and wonderful culture to the world. Others have also dismissed our impact, claiming that there are too few of us to matter. Furthermore, in a world where our collective voices can yield economic, social, and political power, the strength of our community’s voice pales in comparison to the voices of others in Houston. We can change that however, by standing up to be counted and participating in the One Love Caribbean Heritage & Media Survey.

With a the choice of an Apple i-Pod Touch or a $200 American Express Gift Card going to a winning respondent, the One Love Caribbean Demographic & Media Survey is being conducted under the auspices of the One Love Caribbean News during the month of July, 2011.

The survey will obtain basic demographic and media-preference information from respondents, and will provide information that will give the Caribbean community the concrete data to prove that we can be a powerful force within the Greater Houston Area. While we

Baytown Implements Recycling Pilot Program OLC July 1 -- The City of Baytown has partnered with Waste Management to begin implementation of a six-month pilot recycling program.

The pilot began with three neighborhoods whereby each resident receives a 96-gallon recycling container. The larger containers will allow participants to increase their recycling ability and decrease the amount of trash put out for collection. Collection days in the pilot area will remain the same; only the size of the container will change. There is no additional cost to the resident.

ROUND DE YARD - Houston Caribbean News Texas Multicultural Women Presents “Living In America” OLC July 1 -- The Texas Multicultural Women (TMW) will host a series of quarterly forum. The first one, called “Living in America”, is scheduled for Saturday, July 16th, 2011, at 10:00 am at Keller Williams Realty, 19708 Northwest Freeway, Suite 2800, Houston, Texas, 77065.

According to Veronica Ricketts, Founder and Chair of the TMW, there are so many challenges to face, hurdles to cross, and adjustments to be made. We need to understand and learn how to navigate it. The forum will consist of a continental breakfast, presentation, and roundtable meetings.

There will women from different countries and backgrounds along with a speaker to share their experiences. Men are welcomed.

The speaker for “Living in America” is Thecia Jenkins. She is a dynamic speaker, trainer, author, certified life coach and consultant residing in Houston, Texas. She is the Human Resource & Education Director for The Bridge Over Troubled Waters, Inc., a crisis intervention agency providing emergency shelter, transitional shelter and community outreach in southeast Harris County

and owner of Bold Profession Seminars & Consulting.

Jenkins has presented at the Texas Council on Family Violence, National College of District Attorneys, University of Utah, Austin Community College, New Mexico District Attorney Annual Conference, West Texas Conference on Aging and other conferences. Her topics include cultural competency, domestic violence, emotional intelligence and interpersonal communication.

She most recently was featured as a contributing author in the book Inspired Women Succeed and is a staff writer for Houston’s only Caribbean newspaper, One Love Caribbean News.

Texas Multicultural Women was established in July 2008. The organization consists of a group for women of various international origins with a variety of interests and experiences. The goals and objectives of the TMW are to focus on the key issues plaguing women in the United States and throughout the world. The organization frames its interests around promoting diverse cultural awareness in the surrounding Houston communities.

Kansas City Teaches Missouri City Domino Club A Lesson

By Everald Ramsay Houston Missouri City Domino Club Contributing Writer OLC July 1 -- On Saturday, June 29, 2011, The Houston/Missouri City Domino Club traveled to Dallas to defend the Sterling Trophy, which we won a year ago. A few key players were absent due to previous commitments. Nevertheless, we were prepared for the task at hand.

We arrived in Dallas confident of repeating as champions, but the Kansas City and Dallas clubs had other ideas for us.

First to begin, the Dallas and Houston/Missouri City clubs squared off in the opening match, which unfortunately ended in a draw.

We were very disappointed in the results.

Later that afternoon, we challenged Kansas

City who had their full contingent of players. They really showed us who the big boys were that day; they beat us by 30 plus points.

All accolades were given to the Kansas City club because they “apparently” wanted the championship more than we did.

In summary, I personally think that we became to complacent and over confident.

Fortunately, a valuable lesson was learned that day: In the future we must never underestimate our opponents.

Next year, we will travel to Kansas City to retrieve the Sterling Trophy, but until then we are going to put in some long needed practice.

Second Annual Baytown Caribbean International Day

OLC July 1 -- On May 28, President Barack Obama signed an official proclamation declaring the month of June as National Caribbean American Heritage Month to celebrate and recognize the many contributions Caribbean people have made to this country.

In keeping with the celebration, Trinity Episcopal Church in Baytown hosted the Second Annual Baytown Caribbean International Day to kick-off the celebrations. The event brought together some two hundred people of the Baytown/Houston communities, especially those of Caribbean heritage, to enjoy the Caribbean culture, foods, and music, and performance.

Many Caribbean associations partnered with the church to bring out the richness of the region: The St. Lucia Association of Texas, Houston Association of Panamanians, Haitian Multicultural Association, St. Kitts/Nevis Association, Caribbean Impact Foundation, HERO, and CAHFT. Attorney Roselene Alexis, Executive Director/Founder of Haitian Empowerment Relief Organization delivered a moving presentation regarding her organization objectives and focus toward resources in small villages and towns in Haiti. Ms. Alexis emphasized that donations provided whether great or small could make a noticeable impact and help transform lives in a sustainable way.

Within the past year, HERO has built a school in the village of La Gonave, Haiti, which now educates over 100 students.

The Houston Association of Panamanian (HAP, Inc) were accompanied by their cultural dancers, Groupo Folkorico Raices De Panama, (Folkloric Group Roots of Panama). The women dressed in the “pollera” (pronounced “Poyera”) and the men dressed in the “Montuno” (pronounced “montuno”) . The group danced to the rhythmic beats of African-style music.

St. Kitts and Nevis was represented by the masquerade to show the art form combining of African and European influences of the islands. Masquerade is one of the most popular sports performed during Carnival.

Marilyn D. Jones of Caribbean Impact Foundation spoke on the various contributions that the Caribbean Dispora has made to the United States.

Andrea Jean-Baptiste spoke on behalf of The St. Lucia Association of Texas. Dressed in her national dress, she explained the cultural meaning of piece of fabric of the national dress. Thereafter, Sylvanus Donaie of OLC Educational and Resource Foundation spoke on their on-going project to supply books, computers to the library and infant school in Soufriere, St. Lucia.

Barbados PM Counsels Caribbean States crisis, the Grenada coup in 1979, and the world economic crisis of the 80s and, more recently 9/11, among other events, he observed that Member States “hardly had time to catch our breath before the crash of 2008 unleashed an unprecedented, global economic and financial upheaval which still has us in its stranglehold.” Yet, he argued that these circumstances had served to strengthen the region.

If Caribbean states are to truly achieve socio-economic development, then they must become more self-reliant.

This was underscored by Prime Minister Freundel Stuart yesterday as he delivered his maiden address at the opening ceremony of the 32nd Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). It was held at the Sir Cecil Jacobs Auditorium, Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, in St. Kitts and Nevis.

Mr. Stuart told delegates that in spite of the many difficulties facing the region, that in fact, every Caribbean territory “has the capacity to meet the needs of its people, with respect to food, shelter, clothing, health and education”.

The Prime Minister made it clear that the Government of Barbados (which has lead responsibility for the CARICOM Single Market and Economy) remained “unequivocally committed to the pursuit of Caribbean integration, adding “the building of a truly West Indian nation is as much a priority for me as it was for my distinguished predecessors. I pledge to remain true to their legacy.”

Recounting the struggles of the region against a constant backdrop of political, economic and social upheaval evidenced by the conditions of the 1930s, the first oil

And, to recognize that when the occasion demands it the pragmatic and the possible must sometimes become our stepping stones to the ideal.”

The Prime Minister urged Caribbean people not to be “daunted by the negativity of the armchair pundits who continue to spread their ‘doom and gloom’ commentaries across the region, composing their requiems to CARICOM, diagnosing the so-called paralysis, and bemoaning the pressing of the pause button”.

He pointed out that developments that were worthwhile and sustainable were “usually never dramatic”, emphasizing that they tended to come “incrementally, quietly, and very often imperceptibly.”

Privy Council Quashes Death Sentence in Trinidad PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, Friday June 17, 2011 – A convicted killer on death row in Trinidad and Tobago has escaped the hangman’s noose after the Judicial Committee of the London-based Privy Council ruled that the mandatory death sentence for felony murder is unconstitutional.

With the court, Trinidad and Tobago’s highest court of appeal, quashing Nimrod Miguel’s death sentence, he will now be entitled to a sentence hearing where a judge will have the discretion to impose an appropriate sentence.

Miguel was in January 2008 convicted for the murder of Ramesh Lalchan. He had admitted that he and three others robbed the man of his car, but said it was one of the others who shot Lalchan in the head.

His initial challenge to the conviction and sentence in the Court of Appeal in the twinisland republic was rejected and he then went to the Privy Council.

The British court ruled this week that the imposition of the mandatory sentence of death on conviction for participation in a “violent arrestable offense” is particularly harsh as all persons involved in the offense are liable to be convicted of murder and au-

tomatically sentenced to death, even if the killing was done without intent to kill or to cause grievous bodily harm.

Saul Lehrfreund and Parvais Jabbar, human rights lawyers and Executive Directors of the Death Penalty Project - an international human rights organization that provides free legal representation to individuals facing the death penalty in the Commonwealth – welcomed the ruling which they said could benefit others convicted in similar circumstances.

“This important ruling could potentially assist many prisoners on death row who have been convicted of “violent arrestable offense murder” and were sentenced to the mandatory death penalty in Trinidad and Tobago.

All such prisoners will now be entitled to the same remedy as Mr. Miguel and fall to be resentenced,” they said in a statement.

They said they hoped the legislation would be adjusted to remove the mandatory aspect of the death penalty from the statute books.

The London-based Privy Council, which is still Trinidad and Tobago’s final appeal court, rules that mandatory death sentence for felony murder is cruel and unusual punishment.

Jamaica Looking At Smart Grid Technology KINGSTON — Minister of State for Energy and Mining, Laurence Broderick, said the Government is examining the feasibility of introducing smart grid technology to the island’s electricity distribution network.

“Yes, we are looking at it. We just had an expert down, who has been assisting us in that direction,” he told a recent JIS Think Tank, informing that technical discussions and talks with primary stakeholders are also being held.

Smart grids are electrical networks that can intelligently integrate the behaviour and actions of all users connected to it, in order to efficiently deliver a sustainable, cost effective and secure electricity service. The use of the technology could significantly reduce electricity costs for Jamaicans, as it allows customers to only pay for what they need.

Jamaicans Would Have Been Better Off British – Poll

OLC July 1 -- Nearly 50 years into our country’s Independence, most Jamaicans believe that their homeland would have been better off if it had remained a British colony. This is according to a survey conducted by the Gleaner of Jamaica.

The poll found that 60% of respondents support this view and 17% disagreed with a margin of error of plus or minus 4%. A thousand people took part in the survey. Jamaica has a population of 2.7 million people. In essence, six out of 10 adult Jamaicans believe this phenomenon; they would have been better off if Jamaica was still a British colony.

2825 Young Saint Lucians Sat the Common Entrance

OLC July 1 -- Two thousand eight hundred and twenty five young Saint Lucians sat the Common Entrance exams on Wednesday, June 29, to select the school that they will attend for the next five years in pursuit of secondary education.

The exams were held at nineteen centers around the island where the students wrote three papers – English Language, Mathematics and a general paper containing Social Studies, Study Skills, Science and Health & Family Life.

Education officer Carmilita Matthew says as a direct benefit of Universal Secondary Education (USE), which was implemented in 2006, all students who wrote the Common Entrance exams are guaranteed a place at a Secondary school.

“It really depends on students’ performance at the Common Entrance Exams that will indicate the secondary school they will be assigned to. The students were given seven choices out of our twenty three secondary

schools on the island. Definitely there was registration. From our end at the Ministry of Education, we had to prepare the paper and ensure security at the centers and we are happy to have had the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force assist us with security. All students who wrote the exams are guaranteed a Secondary School place.”

The Common Entrance Examination results are expected to be released on Thursday, July 14, 2011.

LIAT to Commence Night Landing into Dominica

LIAT, the Caribbean Airlines will commence regularly scheduled night landing operations into Dominica beginning July 5, 2011. Flight 367 will travel daily from Antigua to Dominica, leaving Antigua at 7:05 P.M and arriving Melville hall at 7:45 P.M.

News of the pending flights has been well received in Dominica where preparations are underway for the hosting of a historic test match between India and the West Indies between July 6 to 10.

The regular flights into Dominica will originate from Antigua in the initial phases but is expected to extend to Barbados shortly.

The flights are expected to make it easier for persons traveling into Dominica to make it to the island in one day.

It is more than ten months since LIAT made its much publicized test night fight into Melville Hall and more than two years after work was completed on the more than $50 million upgrade and improvements to the country’s lone airport.

In May, WINAIR, which at the time was the only airline making nightly flights into Dominica, announced a suspension of its service as it underwent major restructuring.

Two months ago, LIAT announced that the delay in scheduling flights had to do with the certification of its pilots to conduct night landings into Dominica. At the time, the company indicated that pilots based in Antigua had completed the certification process and that those in Barbados were next in line to do so.

A broad range of issues impacting their countries were discussed, including regional security, economic development, social inclusion, energy, food and nutrition security and climate change. The United States and Caribbean countries reaffirmed a shared commitment to work together through the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative (CBSI) partnership to reduce illicit trafficking in drugs, small arms and ammunition, increase public safety and security, and promote so-

cial justice.

The participants reaffirmed their solidarity with the people of Haiti and their commitment to supporting Haiti in its reconstruction efforts and the strengthening of its institutional and human capacity in furtherance of its sustainable development.

The United States and the Caribbean are also cooperating under the Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas (ECPA) in the areas of energy efficiency, renewable energy, energy poverty, and climate change.

The U.S. Secretary of State announced projects that will receive clean energy technical assistance under the Advancing Sustainable Energy Solutions in the Caribbean Initiative and the Caribbean Climate Change Adaptation Initiative, which partners with the University of the West Indies with U.S. universities through U.S. partner Higher Education for Development to enhance research and promote outreach to policy-makers on climate change adaptation.

AntiguaAddreses US Human Trafficking Report OLC July 1 -- National Security Minister Dr Errol Cort has refuted some aspects of the findings of a report by the US State Department, which claims that Antigua & Barbuda has made little progress over the past year in protecting the rights of victims of human trafficking.

He said earlier this year Parliament passed two pieces of legislation, The Migrant Smuggling (Prevention) Act and the Trafficking in Persons (Prevention) Act, to help fight migrant smuggling, and workers in key positions were being continually trained.

The State Department report said a small number of women from Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic are forced into prostitution here, and to a lesser extent, women are subjected to involuntary domestic servitude in private homes.

It cites business people from the Dominican Republic as well as some of the country’s citizens as being pimps, who force women into prostitution primarily at four illegal brothels and private residences here.

“Some of these foreign women voluntarily migrate to Antigua to engage in prostitution but are subsequently subjected to force or coercion and become victims of sex trafficking,” the report claimed.

“After their arrivals, brothel managers confiscate their passports and threaten their vic-

tims with deportation until they repay the brothel owner for travel and other expenses they were not aware they had incurred.”

The report surmised that government does not fully comply with the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking, even though it noted that the country “is making significant efforts to do so.” It also noted that no trafficking offenders have been arrested or prosecuted, yet law enforcement officers continue to treat some suspected victims as criminals.

The minister also stated that lack of funds is affecting the country’s fight against human trafficking, and suggested that government may have to seek outside assistance.

“Where the capacity is lacking, whether financial or otherwise, then we may need to resort to assistance externally,” he said.

“I say to the IOM (International Organization for Migration) that we need to discuss among ourselves how small developing nation states can be better able to deal with the challenges of migrant vulnerable persons. So, if it is that we have an obligation to provide social services t o that vulnerable group, how do we do that within the context of an already strained social sector where our own citizens and nationals are not getting their just due?”

In a recent article published in The Huffington Post on June 28, 2011, Bonnie Kavoussi reported that Goldman Sachs plans to hire 1,000 people in Singapore; while at the same time laying off a significant number of employees here in the United States. The reported source of this information was Fox Business News.

The positions targeted for overseas hiring in Singapore are reportedly high-paying, skilled jobs in sales and investment banking. It’s interesting then, that the same types of jobs being filled in Singapore are the ones being cut in the United States of America.

Further, Goldman Sachs’ hiring in Singapore would be only the most recent expansion overseas, since the company also plans to expand its personnel in Brazil by a projected 20% this year, as reported in Bloomberg News. This would be Goldman’s second workforce expansion in Brazil in two years. To make this picture clearer, this is the same Goldman Sachs that received bail out dollars from U.S. tax payers earlier in our recession. And we are still not out of the woods of recession yet! To be clear, it’s only fair to mention that Goldman Sachs was not the only recipient of bailout money.

The important thing to keep in mind is that this is not about hatred toward America and its citizens. Remember that story about the new elite just a few months ago, otherwise known as 1% (per centers). They are known as super-wealthy people, who wield immeasurable political and economic influence around the world. They exert influence based on their narrowly defined self interests, while the 90% (per centers) “rest” of us occupy our time with issues of culturism, nationalism, genderism, racism, consumerism, and other distractions which help to keep the status quo in place. The 1% (per centers) are well connected to “peers” across national boundaries, while we continue to “look after our own kind or our individual selves!” Whatever that means!

The greater question is, what do we want to do about it? Do we want to learn from and emulate those people, who make a difference around the world? Or do we want to keep doing what we’re doing? Do we want to build or maintain life enhancing institutions to which we may have access or are we sufficiently comfortable with the state of affairs?

Through the eyes of our own history, these questions may be sheer rhetoric, since I believe we already know some good answers to the questions posed. What we may lack mostly, in my opinion, is sufficient courage to change.

But for those who would dare; remember, we must change the way we see everything; if we will change anything at all! And this includes the way we see these bankers moving their investments overseas.

As we celebrate this nation’s independence, and that of many Caribbean nations, there is a heightened focus on the subject of freedom and all it entails. But when one really thinks about it, is there anything that is really free? You see, somebody always pays the price. A lot is taken for granted and often there is a sense of entitlement to the things, the privileges and the liberties that exist around us. But nothing is really free.

Somebody paid the price!

The freedom that is enjoyed in the United States of America or in any free country – someone fought and gave limb or life for it. The prosperity enjoyed in this country – many people over the centuries fought and worked hard to make it happen. “Free” public assistance or public services – free food, free lunch, hardworking taxpayers pay for it every day - somebody pays the price!

The sense of security one has in one’s home, and the relative safety from criminal elements – law enforcement officers devote their time and jeopardize their own safety

The ride in the bus or train or plane, the streets you walk on - somebody went before and paved the way; somebody paid.

Someone risked their lives, went to jail, so you could be free to sit in the front of the bus. Your “free” education - the privilege to study, learn and earn - somebody fought the unjust system to make it possible, somebody spent the dollars, paid the tax, donated the funds. Somebody paid!

The freedoms that you have that you think is your right, somebody fought for it and even now is still fighting. Somebody challenged and won the fight against slavery so you can be free today. Somebody died for it. Don’t take it for granted nor feel entitled; instead be grateful. There are folks who yearn for the blessings that you have, the life you have now…… somebody paid the price, somebody bore the pain.

Your precious, eternal soul – Someone died to save, Someone gave His life… paid up with HIs blood so that salvation is free to you. He did not have to do it, but He loved you that much. John 15:1 “ There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends”. (NLT) Somebody paid!

Thank God for the many “somebodies” who gave their lives for a cause that was bigger than themselves, and won the many freedoms that we have today. Thank God somebody paid!

Widow of Lord Glenconner: “Do the right thing” The widow of Lord Glenconner, who has left his fortune to his West Indian manservant, has appealed for him to return part of the estate to the family. Distressed Lady Anne Glenconner said she hoped that Kent Adonai, 48, ‘would do the right thing’.

Lady Anne, who was a close friend of Princess Margaret, said it was a ‘surprise’ to learn that her husband had left the multimillion pound estate on the Caribbean island of St Lucia to Mr Adonai.

At a memorial service yesterday for Lord Glenconner, 83, near Innerleithen in the Scottish Borders, Lady Anne said: ‘Kent was beloved by my husband but so were we all – I was married to him for 55 years.’

‘We are hoping Kent will follow what we all knew were my husband’s wishes — namely that Cody would be left his estate in St Lucia.’

I think women learn how to go without sex for a variety of reasons. Most of us are acutely aware of society’s double standard, when it comes to sex, so much so that we’re willing to brand the women among us who freely indulge as much as they like, with whomever they like, as whores.

The sex drive is probably one of the strongest biological urges that human beings have. As a single, attractive woman living in New York I get propositioned for sex all the time. In fact I often joke with my friends that if I slept with every man who found me attractive, and wanted to sleep with me I’d be considered a “whore” by society’s standards. Beyond the obvious societal repercussions which I have no desire to deal with, I have always been acutely aware of the role hormones play in the process of attraction.

The sex-act can be an immensely pleasurable experience that binds people together, but it can also become a source of frustration and stress.

Sex is a drug, and in today’s liberal culture, where hooking up and friends with benefits situations dominate, celibacy has become an almost irrelevant practice. In fact, on more than one occasion, when I asked if people still practiced celibacy, several of my friends assumed it was a trick question. This left me with the distinct impression that very few people on either side of the gender divide bothered to practice abstinence.

The general consensus of most of the men I spoke to was that some men probably practiced celibacy, but it most certainly could not be a choice. At least one guy cheekily admitted, “I practice it, but I’m not very good at it”. Another joked that it was something that only HIV-positive people need to concern themselves with, because “man always want to buss they gun unless they little funny”.

Most women will admit that the decision to abstain or indulge in sexual intercourse is far less clear-cut. Several of my female friends admitted to practicing celibacy at one point or another in their life. This was either by force because they lacked men who were interested in them and suitable options, or by choice. In fact, a close female friend chose to reveal on Facebook that she had been celibate for over a year, by saying, “I’ve been celibate for one year, ten months and five days.” That’s 684 days – 59, 097 600 seconds.

Some women, myself included, often torture ourselves over when to give up the proverbial ‘nookie’, especially when we really like a guy. Give it up too soon and he thinks you’re ‘loose’, wait too late and he’ll think you’re a prude, or even worse frigid.

Indulge on a regular basis for pleasure and companionship with a friend, and you might just find yourself addicted, nursing a broken heart when he decides to move on, or just frustrated when you realize you’re not his only source of sexual comfort.

I’m fairly certain that no guy grows up being told to keep his hand out of the ‘honey pot’ or goes through the mental gymnastics mentioned above, before engaging in the sex act. This may be because men – generally speaking – worry far less about becoming attached to their horizontal conquests, although this is not to say it doesn’t happen or that some men don’t practice abstinence.

In conducting research for this article, I spoke to two men who admitted to being celibate, one of whom insists he hasn’t had sex in almost two years. His reasoning was simply, “Using people is wrong in my head.

I also wonder what the person I end up with would think about my many escapades when it came out”.

Personally, I don’t know too many virgins, and firmly believe that people shouldn’t be judged harshly about their previous, sexual decisions. Being good at anything takes practice after all. I do, however, think there’s a case to be made against treating people like “sex toys”. Sex involves way too many hormones for there to be no emotional consequences, for one or both parties involved.

As CNN contributor Dannah Gresh asserted recently in an article on today’s hook-up culture, “there’s nothing biologically brief about a hook up”.

As a single woman, I envy my coupled-up friends, and those who are able to do the “friends with benefits” thing, because sex is an immensely pleasurable experience. Going without it is like detoxing from caffeine or alcohol, except the withdrawal symptoms never go away.

“See you won’t die if you don’t have sex”. I even know someone who’s been celibate for six years now, and seems to be unperturbed by what others would consider a sexual drought.

In my virginal years, I remember my mother telling me that the sex drive was a sleeping giant best left alone, until you had a regular supply (marriage), because once you woke him up it was impossible to put him back to sleep.

Some of my jaded readers will no doubt choose to believe that anyone who says they practice celibacy is a liar. I mean, if ordained priests can’t deny themselves, how can any-

It is my fervent belief that we should be our own experts on our bodies; we are the ones that feel intuitively when something does not feel right. I contend that in order to be healthy we must eat consciously, know what we eat, where it came from and the nutrients within.

In recent years, profound changes in the industrialized world in terms of our food supplies, the depletion of nutrients in our soils and our lifestyles together with our dietary habits have created some serious illnesses.

Many follow a diet characterized by excessive caloric consumption and frequent nutrition imbalances. The consumption of animal derived food products continues to increase with its accompanying increase in saturated fats and cholesterol. The tendency to eat highly refined or processed products reduces the intake of vitamins, certain minerals and other beneficial substances such as fiber contained in foods in their most natural state.

Many nutritional investigations in recent years show in their studies the effect that diet has on the prevention and the treatment of circulatory disease such as heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, cancer and obesity.

Clinical studies have demonstrated that the abundant use of fruits and vegetables prevents the initiation of certain cancers. In fact some of the illnesses such as Type 11 diabetes, also known as adult-onset diabetes, now appear in our young children. Its causes are unknown, but it is exacerbated by a diet rich in sweets, sodas and refined products and poor in whole grains.

A and vitamin C. It is also rich in potassium and low in sodium. It contains anticarcinogenic, sulfurated phytochemicals, as do all crucifiers. It is good for persons with coronary diseases. It promotes the elimination of excess liquid retained in the tissues (edema), operating as a decongestive to the circulatory system and the heart. It is also good for persons who suffer with obesity and diabetes because it is very low in calories and sugars, and because it produces a certain feeling of satiety, it should be included in the diets of the obese and diabetics. It is also good for persons with cancer since it has high levels of beta-carotene and phytochemicals. It is a powerful anticarcinogenic food, whose effectiveness has been proven in a wide variety of scientific investigations.

Banana Banana is one of the most nutritious and medicinal fruit that exists. It consists of a significant amount of vitamins C, B1, B2 and E, as well as foliates. Bananas are also quite rich in minerals, prominent among which are potassium, magnesium and iron. It is an ideal fruit for those suffering from coronary disease or circulatory system disorders because of its exceptional composition.

Carrots Carrots are among the best source of Vitamin A. Found as beta-carotene in carrots, our bodies first convert it into retinol for use. It plays an important role in facilitating bone growth, protecting our immune system, and repairs micro-tears.

Squash Squash contains three of the most effective, proven anticarcinogenic vegetable-based substances: betacarotene, vitamin C, and vegetable fiber. Because of this, the squash family together with that of cabbages, constitute the foods with the highest level of anticarcinogenic effect. It is great for persons with cancer. Squash as a mild diuretic in the kidneys, increasing urine production and encouraging the elimination of liquids from the body. Those suffering from coronary heart disease should not fail to eat squash at least three times a week.

Asparagus Asparagus is a vegetable very high in protein. It contains considerable fiber, B group vitamins, foliates and vitamins A, C and E. In terms of minerals, it provides significant amounts of potassium, phosphorous, iron and magnesium. Several years ago, Richard R. Vensal, D.D.S. discovered that Asparagus might cure cancer. He recommends that the asparagus be pureed and 4 tablespoons taken twice a day.

Tomatoes Tomatoes are the protector of the prostrate.

It also has lycopene which is also found in the testicles, the prostrate and the suprarenal glands. It is an extremely potent antioxidant, preventing the deterioration that free radicals produce in the DNA of the cells. Lycopene intervenes in the mechanisms that control cellular growth. Without its presence cells produce in a more disorderly manner. A variety of studies conducted at the Harvard University shows that men who regularly eat fresh tomato, as well as tomato sauce or juice, are at much lower risk of prostate cancer. Men should ensure that tomatoes are in their diet daily.

Men: Time For A Tune Up? This month, I want to focus on Men’s Health, especially men of the African Diaspora. Moreover, this month, in the United States, we are celebrating and recognizing the many contributions that CaribbeanAmericans have made to this country. In this spirit, I am making a plea to our men to do a little “preventive maintenance” on themselves.

Remember men, the Houston Caribbean Festival is just around the corner, and you can only jump up, attend jouvert, and play “mas”, if you are running at peak performance.

We know that a significant number of men’s serious health problems can be detected and treated if awareness of these problems is more widespread. If you’re reluctant to visit your physician for regular screenings and routine care, remember this; preventive health care not only prolongs life, it also improves your quality of life. Investing in your health today is a very smart move for you and your loved ones.

Screening tests can find diseases early, when they’re easiest to treat. Talk to your doctor about which preventive medical tests you need to stay healthy.

Body Mass Index: Your body mass index, or BMI, is a measure of your body fat based on your height and weight. It is used to screen for obesity.

Blood Pressure: Have your blood pressure checked at least annually. High blood pressure increases your chance of getting heart or kidney disease, and places you at higher risk for stroke. If you have high blood pressure, you may need medication to control it.

Cardiovascular Disease: Beginning at age 45 and through age 79, ask your doctor if you should take aspirin every day to help lower your risk of a heart attack. How much aspirin you should take depends on your age, your health, and your lifestyle.

Cholesterol: Once you turn 35 (or once you turn 20 if you have risk factors like diabetes, history of heart disease, tobacco use, high blood pressure, or BMI of 30 or over), have your cholesterol checked regularly. High blood cholesterol is one of the major risk factors for heart disease.

Colorectal Cancer: Beginning at age 50 and through age 75, get tested for colorectal cancer. You and your doctor can decide which test is best. How often you’ll have the test depends on which test you choose. If you have a family history of colorectal cancer,

you may need to be tested before you turn 50.

Other Cancers: Ask your doctor if you should be tested for prostate, lung, oral, skin, or other cancers.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases: Talk to your doctor to see whether you should be tested for gonorrhea, syphilis, chlamydia, or other sexually transmitted diseases. Your primary care physician can guide you; contact our Access Center if you need help finding a physician.

HIV: Your doctor may recommend screening for HIV if you: Have sex with men.

Had unprotected sex with multiple partners.

Have used injected drugs. Pay for sex or have sex partners who do. Have past or current sex partners who are infected with HIV. Are being treated for sexually transmitted diseases. Had a blood transfusion between 1978 and 1985.

Depression: If you have felt “down” or hopeless during the past two weeks or you have had little interest in doing things you usually enjoy, talk to your doctor about depression. Depression is a treatable illness.

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm: If you are between the ages of 65 and 75 and have smoked 100 or more cigarettes in your lifetime, ask your doctor to screen you for an abdominal aortic aneurysm. This is an abnormally large or swollen blood vessel in your stomach that can burst without warning. Your primary care physician can guide you; contact our Access Center if you need help finding a physician.

Diabetes: If your blood pressure is higher than 135/80, ask your doctor to test you for diabetes. Diabetes, or high blood sugar, can cause problems with your heart, eyes, feet, kidneys, nerves, and other body parts.

Tobacco Use: If you smoke or use tobacco, talk to your doctor about quitting. For tips on how to quit, go to http://www.smokefree.gov or call the National Quitline at 1-800-QUITNOW.

TRINI FATHER AND SON An illiterate Trinidad father with his educated son with a PhD in Astrology went on a camping trip.

The Retirees

Two old retired friends, Timothy and Longman, meet in the Charlotte Amalie Park in St. Thomas every day to feed the pigeons and watch the mongoose and iguana. They always discuss Caribbean integration; how the Virgin Islands should join with the other Caribbean Islands.

One day, Timothy didn’t show up. Longman didn’t think much about it, and figured maybe, he had a cold or something. But after Timothy hadn’t shown up for a week or so, Longman really got worried.

However, since the only time they ever got together was at their park, Longman didn’t know where Timothy lived. He was guessing that he was living either in Savan, Pearson Garden, or Frenchtown, and so he was unable to find out what had happened to him.

Longman figured, it had been about a month, he had seen the last of Timothy. But one day, Longman approached the park and -- lo and behold -- there sat Timothy!

Longman was very excited and happy to see him. “Man, where have you been. I thought that I would never see you. Then he said, “For crying out loud, Timothy, what in the world happened to you?” Timothy replied, “I have been in jail.” “Jail!” cried Longman. “Wah you been doing?” “Well,” Timothy said, “You know Judy. Dat cute little waitress at de Savan Bakery where we sometimes go to get some lemongrass tea?”

“Yeah! Yeah man!” said Longman, “Mi ah

The New Supermarket A new supermarket opened in St. Lucia. It has an automatic water mister to keep the produce fresh. Just before it goes on, you hear the sound of distant thunder and the smell of fresh rain.

When you pass the milk cases, you hear cows mooing and you experience the scent of fresh mown hay.

In the meat department there is the aroma of charcoal grilled steaks with onions.

When you approach the egg case, you hear hens cluck and cackle, and the air is filled with the pleasing aroma of bacon and eggs frying.

The bread department features the tantalizing smell of fresh baked bread & cookies.

I don’t buy toilet paper there anymore.

The Mental Test

Jim and Edna were both patients in a mental hospital. One day while they were walking past the hospital swimming pool, Jim suddenly jumped into the deep end. He sank to the bottom of the pool and stayed there.

Edna promptly jumped in to save him. She swam to the bottom and pulled Jim out.

When the medical director became aware of Edna’s heroic act, he immediately ordered her to be discharged from the hospital as he now considered her to be mentally stable.

The doctor went to tell Edna the news.

“Edna, I have good news and bad news.

The good news is you’re being discharged, since you were able to rationally respond to a crisis by jumping in and saving the life of another patient. I have concluded that your act displays sound mindness. The bad news is Jim, the patient you saved, hung himself with his bathrobe belt in the bathroom. I am so sorry, but he’s dead.”

Trinidad Curried Goat

Ingredients: 2 lbs goat cut into 1-2 inch pieces 1 medium onion sliced 3 cloves garlic crushed or sliced thin 3 sprigs thyme, 1 tomato sliced 2 scallions 1/2 tsp curry powder for seasoning the meat 1 1/2 tbsp curry powder for cooking 1/4 tsp geera powder (cumin) 1/4 tsp on amchar masala 1 leaf fresh thyme 4 leaves shado beni (bhandhanya) 3 tbsp oil (something that can withstand high heat) 3 1/4 cups water, 1/2 scotch bonnet pepper 1/4 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp black pepper DIRECTIONS: Wash and drain the meat, then season with everything listed above except the water, oil, onion, garlic, pepper and 1 1/2 tablespoons of curry powder. Mix well, cover and put in the fridge to marinate for at least 2 hrs.

In a heavy pot put the oil to heat on medium.

Add the onion and garlic and allow to cook for a few minutes Add the hot pepper and curry powder so it cooks with the onion and garlic Allow to cook for about 2 minutes.

Add a 1/4 cup of water and allow this to cook on medium heat for about 5 minutes.

Keep stirring.

Increase the heat and start adding the pieces of seasoned goat a few pieces at a time and stir between each batch.

Cover the pot and bring to a gentle simmer.

Allow to cook for 1 1/2 hrs until the meat is tender. Reduce heat until to allow gravy to thicken to your liking.

Trini Rice and Bean

Ingredients: 2 cups rice 1 – 2 cups pigeon peas or red kidney beans 1 cup unsweetened coconut milk 4 cups water 1/4 lb salt meat (optional) cut in pieces 1 small onion, chopped 2 blades chive 1 sprig fresh thyme 1 scotch bonnet pepper, chopped finely 1 tsp salt 1 tbsp vegetable oil DIRECTIONS: If salt meat is used, soak overnight. Combine peas, meat (if using), salt, coconut milk and 1 cup water. Cook for 20 minutes on medium-high heat for dried beans or 15 minutes on medium heat for tinned.

In a separate pan, heat the oil and brown the chopped onion, pepper, and chive. When the peas are almost cooked, add 2 cups water, the sprig of thyme and the rice. When the rice is tender, mix in fried seasonings.

Trini Rice and Bean

Ingredients: 1 1/2 cups blackeyed peas 3 scallions, finely sliced, 1 celery stalk, diced 1 carrot, diced, 1/2 green pepper, diced 1/2 tsp. dried thyme, 1 tsp. paprika 1/4 tsp. crushed red pepper 1/2 tsp. ground allspice 1/2 tsp. ground mustard powder 3 1/2 cups water, 1 tsp salt DIRECTIONS: Pick over the black-eyed peas and wash well. Place them and all other ingredients, except salt, into a pressure cooker. Lock the lid in place, and bring the cooker up to high pressure. Cook at high pressure for 11 minutes, and then bring the pressure down using a quick-release method.

Check the seasonings and add more if necessary. Add the salt and simmer for 10 minutes. Serve over brown rice.

Where the topic of casual sex is concerned, I don’t want to treat anyone like I treat my toy. Being treated like a sex object may be momentarily satisfying, but I think it pales in comparison to the uninhibited pleasure of communicating with someone you really like through sex. That’s just me, though, and, maybe I’m in the minority here.

This year, the event includes a fundraising for the people of St. Lucia. In late October 2010, Hurricane Tomas traveled through the Caribbean and wreaked havoc in St. Vincent, Barbados and St. Lucia. St. Lucia was hardest hit with over $100 million dollars in damage. The island was deluged with rain over a period of twenty four hours. Many roads and bridges were washed away or covered with tons of mud and debris. One of the hardest hit areas was the town of Soufriere where their schools and the local library suffered severe damage.

The contributions from fund raising will go toward the library and infant school project administered by OLC Educational and Resource Foundation, Inc.
