Two old friends meet by chance on a cobbled street in a European city. Both had spent many years working with the elite in wood floor design and supply. Balthazar It starts with a forest, deep in Bavaria, or in Burma, or in the American heartland. Next, Balthazar, our wood guru at the mill selects the finest grade of raw lumber from trusted foresters that he’s known for most of his life. Then his skilled team shape the raw wood into planks, taking great care to work with and guard the natural, visual fingerprint of the grain.

What appears from our mill is our collection of exquisitely curated wood in an eclectic and contemporary range of widths, styles and finishes.

Sustainability At Soho Forest we demonstrate our commitment to the environment by purchasing all our American lumber from sustained yields in local forests from small foresters with excellent reputations. As for our Tropical species, we purchase all our wood from Certified importers passed by the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC). They of course, must all be preapproved sustainable exporters and that’s no easy feat. Our European Oak is sourced from centuries old sustainable forests throughout the continent and especially from a small revered patch in the Black Forest of Bavaria.

Understanding the Cut All different industries have their ‘fav’ go to bundle of words, that they love to throw around. In advertising offices you’ll hear words and phrases like Brand Image Alignment, Meaningful Online Engagement, On Brand and Closing the Loop. Well, us ‘Woodies’ have words too. American Oak We think it’s time that we make the winner in this competition a lot clearer for all the potential clients that we have out there on both sides of the Atlantic.

Americans, you should be very proud, as your oak is unquestionably some of the finest on the planet. Just ask the European wine and whiskey makers. As well as using it to age their wonderful products, It has gracefully enhanced their stunningly beautiful manors and chateaux for centuries.

American Oak is just a hint lighter and more uniform in color, with a straighter, subtler grain. That’s it.

European Oak Europeans, well, we look to Europe for some of the finer things in life, so when it comes to wood floors, let there be no more confusion. Your Oak is wonderful and just a slight tad darker, with more golden tones and a wavy grain. Voila!

Blog Back in the early 90’s , maybe late 80’s, I read somewhere that Robert Redford, had Eileen’s cheesecake flown out to him on location while filming. Well, that got my attention and I wasted no time in making the jour ney downtown to Cleveland Place and found the ‘Holy Grail’ of cheesecake.

If I remember correctly, I bought a half pineapple and half strawberry pie and it was simply amazing. Ever since that day I’ve indulged every chance I get. Another downtown New York landmark not to be missed.

Starting in February 2017, check out our ‘Blog’ on www. sohoforest.com/blog. It’s going to include interesting little pieces about Soho, New York and its neighboring villages.

It’ll include snippets on different architects & designers favorite building designs in the area, their favorite boîtes & restaurants, shops and maybe we’ll reveal the ultimate downtown pub crawl.
