As a mission, we pause to celebrate the completion of this summer’s camp season. We have prayed, we have given, we have organized and planned, we have wondered, doubted, worried, and then prayed again and again. Looking back on the 2015 summer camp season, we rejoice how God used One Hope Canada’s camps and ministries to present the Gospel to thousands of children. Hundreds committed their lives to Jesus. Do we have a reason to celebrate? I say, “Yes!” ABOUT THE CHAIRMAN Ferdi has been serving on the National Board since 1995 and became the Chair in 2000. As a young adult, he volunteered at a children's camp, and that is where he heard the message of salvation for the first time. He believes that ministry to children is possibly the most important Christian ministry: children need to hear about God. Canada’s Hope

MAKE KNOWN WHAT HE HAS DONE

CELEBRATE WHAT GOD HAS AND IS DOING The theme of this edition is “celebration” and according to the dictionary, this means to observe or commemorate with ceremonies or festivals; to make known publicly, proclaim, to praise widely or to present widespread and favorable public notice. As I considered this editorial, my mind kept going to the Don Moen chorus I learned many years ago: “I will celebrate, sing unto the Lord, I will sing to Him a new song!”, because we do have so much to celebrate. We witnessed 3,700 children and youth come to camp, many of these for the very first time. About a third of those have no regular exposure to any

type of an evangelical Christian church. So, we continue to stay true to our mission of proclaiming the Gospel to those with the least opportunity to hear of Christ. As you read and interact with the stories that follow, keep in mind the words of the prophet Isaiah, who wrote in 12:4: In that day you will say: “Give praise to the Lord, proclaim His name; make known among the nations what He has done, and proclaim that His name is exalted. We celebrate what God has and is doing to His honour and His glory.

hen I was nine, my mother, Gretta, died and everything was different without her. Our house seemed so empty at times. I was the only kid I knew who wore a key around her neck—everyone else had a mom to welcome them home after school. I let myself into the empty house and waited for more than an hour before Dad came home from work.

Some days, I tried to make supper and in the middle of stirring the creamed corn, would get distracted. Dad sometimes got burned corn and potatoes, but he never complained. He just appreciated my trying. While losing Mom was hard, and though I didn’t have siblings, I was blessed with an absolutely wonderful father. He was so kind and I knew he would always keep me safe. I knew he needed a wife and I needed a mother, so I simply asked God to send us someone. A year after Mom died, I was invited by friends to Gimli Bible Camp. It was my first time at camp; I was so excited to travel by bus with friends! As we tumbled out of the

bus, we were greeted by a lady with a sweet smile. She reminded me of my mother and I was immediately attracted to her. I discovered this pretty woman wasn’t married, and my ten-year-old heart was thrilled! I followed her around all week, and didn’t leave camp before taking her picture and getting her address. At home, I waited for the right moment. One night after supper I showed Dad the picture and told him, “Dad, this is the lady I want for my new mom. Here is her address. Now you write to her.” Being the shy man he was (it took years to get up the courage to ask Mom to marry him), he responded with a decided, “No Faye, I can’t do that.” > page 12 Canada’s Hope

I realized God was asking me to take

my family and spend the summer as camp nurse. To tell you the truth, I was afraid! A moment. That’s how it all began. A moment of saying “yes” to serve at Dauphin Bible Camp for the summer; a moment of saying “yes” to spending ten minutes with my daughter, Ellianna. To tell you the truth, I was afraid! I realized God was asking me to take my family and spend the entire summer as camp nurse. However, a true feeling of peace came over me when these words were spoken into my soul

in that moment: “I am going to do something amazing!” Not realizing how amazing it would be, God brought my daughter into His family as a result of the time we spent at camp. The staff were wonderful at camp; one staff member in particular took the time to let Ellianna tell him stories and he wrote down what she told him. God used this little exercise, which

she has come to love, to enable my daughter to express the love that had been growing in her heart for Him. After creating a story about dinosaurs with this head cabin leader, she then used storytelling to tell me about Princess Ellianna, who let go of her anger because Jesus died on the cross for her and rose again! Precious words that I was not expecting to come out of her mouth in the moments I spent with her after lunch one Friday. She was so excited to tell God she loved Him. In fact she repeated this confession numerous times as she expressed in her own words how thankful she was for Jesus and what He did for her. This event made my whole summer worthwhile, because the soul of my child is of utmost value

A true feeling of peace came over

me when these words were spoken into my soul in that moment: “I am going to do something amazing!” to me and our Heavenly Father. God used these moments and a kind young man this summer to bring my four-year-old daughter into relationship with Him. I believe these moments were possible and happened in the time they did because of the opportunity my daughter had to be a camp kid this

summer. I thank God daily for the way He used the staff at Dauphin Bible Camp to bring about this commitment from my daughter!

One cannot read the Gospel accounts without quickly

realizing that we find in the pages one story after another of God meeting people where they hurt. And it is into that hurt that Jesus, God with us, enters into those loves with simple actions. Sometimes a word of grace and mercy, sometimes a touch of kindness, fulfilling the prophecy, “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

Many children have bought into the lie that there is no hope. 8

Have you ever asked yourself why that is the case? Why are the Gospels full of such seemingly hopeless people? While the situations may vary, their conditions don’t – they are trapped, rejected, estranged, with no place to turn. Often the only words on their lips is a desperate prayer.

Why did God leave us one account after another of wounded lives being restored? Did He orchestrate this so we could be grateful for the past or so that we could look back with amazement at what Jesus did? My belief is that isn’t the reason at all. The purpose of these stories isn’t to tell us what Jesus did but to tell

We celebrate the amazing changes that are evident as young lives come to know Jesus. us what Jesus does, so that we can together with the Lord, celebrate the hope that we have in Christ. These stories are historic moments when a real God met real pain, so that we can answer the question that so many are asking today, “where is God when I hurt?” And today as perhaps never before, there is a sense of hopelessness in our children and youth. This past summer our ministry points encountered many children and youth who have bought into the lie of the evil one that there is no hope. We have children whose thoughts are being led to self-mutilation, self-harm even

to the point of suicide. For the past eighty-eight years, our Mission has been able to speak the truth and demonstrate the unconditional love of Jesus particularly to children and youth and we continue to do so in these days. And while we are at times overwhelmed with the issues that we see in these young lives, we are also privileged to celebrate with the Lord and the angels in the amazing changes that are evident as young lives come to know Jesus in a personal way. It has been my privilege to witness first hand changed lives and can bear

testimony to the fact that we have a God who is our hope and who cares about us infinitely more than we can fathom. Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; His greatness no one can fathom. One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts. They speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty— and I will meditate on your wonderful works. They tell of the power of your awesome works— and I will proclaim your great deeds. They celebrate your abundant goodness and joyfully sing of your righteousness. Psalm 145:3-7

“Four boys became Christians last night,” one of our cabin leaders shared at morning staff meeting. Good news, but not unusual, as about a dozen campers make that decision every week. Art Thiessen was visiting, and challenged us to cheer every time we hear about such a miracle. The angels in heaven do! While the chastened staff were enthusiastically cheering I started bawling. While I know all four boys, one of them is special to me. When I finally stopped crying I was able to share why: When I found Mikey (not his

real name) was coming back to camp this year I was excited. His three sisters and brother attended camp for years but each stopped when they were about 14 due to pregnancy or legal issues. Their home life is not the best, and they were always a challenge to have at camp. Mikey, the youngest, attended when he was 8, 9 and 10 years old. Mostly camp was good,

but every year he would have a major meltdown. The first year I heard some yelling, noticed he was emotionally out of control and escalating, and that his cabin leader did not know what to do. I held him tight until he could calm down--he tried to scratch and bite me as he poured out his hatred. The next year, during our overnight tenting at Camp Morton, I noticed him chasing a boy with a club, with murder in his eyes. I held him again for about ten minutes while he fought viciously. As he got a bit under control he complained, “The mosquitoes are eating me!” I wrapped my huge shirt around his tiny body and we struggled some more until he fell asleep, and I laid him in his sleeping bag. It was only about 8:30 but he was safe and out for the night.

Strange. I asked him, “What was that?” and he replied, “A window. I am in

prison and I am trying to see what it is

like outside.” My heart broke. He had

perfectly explained what his life was like. The third year his cabin leader, the best I could give him, dragged the angry child to me saying, “He attacked another boy. I don’t know what else to do.” We let him go and Mikey ran to the trampoline, with me following. We bounced a bit. I lay on the side and quietly watched a lot. Every ten minutes or so, over the next hour-and-a-

half I stopped him and we talked. Towards the end, when he was ready to apologize and rejoin his group, he stopped bouncing and went over to the trampoline netting and made a square with his hands. Strange. I asked him, “What was that?” and he replied, “A window. I am in prison and I am trying to see what it is like outside.” My heart

broke. He had perfectly explained what his life was like and, at that moment I would have immediately and gladly given my life that his could be better. But it doesn’t work that way. And the next month, the postcard that we sent to him to encourage him, came back. He had moved and I couldn’t discover where to. That was three years ago. On my computer in my office the background pictures are of kids that have affected me in some way. And when their picture comes up, I pray for them. I had been praying for Mikey, 30 seconds at a time, for three years but now he was 13 and, excited as I was that we would have the chance to minister to him again, I was concerned about what kind of behaviour we would have to handle from this, much larger, angry young man.

God knows what He is doing. Mike sucked up the attention we gave him, and four days later was able to understand and accept Christ’s offer to free him from his prison. I couldn’t give my life for Mike, but Christ did. That is worth cheering about! GIMLI BIBLE CAMP

I hounded him for days. Sometimes, I would walk past his bedroom and see him on his knees by his bedside. I hoped he was praying for the courage to write that letter.

Finally, he agreed to write, but he cautioned me, “Faye, this doesn’t mean she will want to have anything to do with us.” I understood that, but couldn’t wait to see if she’d respond. Every day I ran home from school and checked the mailbox, and every day—no letter. Weeks passed, but I didn’t give up hope. One afternoon I opened the mailbox and my heart leapt. There it was, a pink envelope. The longest hour and a half of my life was spent waiting for Dad to get home! The pretty woman from Gimli Bible Camp, Irene Adams, agreed to meet Dad. She also agreed to be his wife, an answer to my prayers.

I did get my new mother and I got to choose her! I distinctly remember one incident where my new mom and I were disagreeing about something and when I complained to Dad, he put down the newspaper, looked me right in the eye and said, “Faye, you picked her, you work it out!” What could I say? My prayers were answered in such a beautiful way, yet recently I realized there was more to this story than even I had thought. Several years ago I was looking through some of my second mom’s keepsakes and came across a real treasure, a certificate given to her many years before. It simply read, “This is to certify that Irene Adams has attended Summer Bible School conducted at Thunder Creek School.” It was dated July 26, 1934, when she was eleven. On the certificate I recognized another name, the signature of the Bible School teacher, Miss Gretta

McIntyre. My second mom had told me that the first time she heard the Gospel was from Gretta, a twentynine-year-old CSSM missionary, who spent her summers traveling to different communities playing her harpsichord, singing songs, and telling children about Jesus. I recognized Gretta’s name, because twelve years after the certificate had been issued, Gretta McIntyre married my dad and, two years later, at age forty-three, gave birth to me. God, in His faithfulness, had woven together the answer to my prayer years before I was born! When Dad wrote that first letter to Irene, he didn’t know his first wife, Gretta, had introduced Irene to Jesus and, although Irene had never met Dad personally, she knew that Gretta would have married a good man, so she felt led to respond to his letter. And, as Paul Harvey always said, “Now you know the rest of the story.”

The joy of the Lord, the revealing

of His plan, and the work of His people. Relentless commitment, unyielding duties and an obdurate motivation, most definitely mean the kingdom of God is a party. The words of Tim Neufeld echo throughout this summer again and again. The very idea of celebration can easily be swept away by overloaded schedules and seemingly outlandish expectations, but this is camp after all, and the one thing that brings it about face is the very real fact of celebration.

The moments throughout the summer, when all is lost in the constant attempts to get your Peewee campers to slow down enough to complete the basic daily tasks, are solidified at the end-ofday experience of having those small souls ask how they can know Jesus. Maybe your summer has looked more like a frantic reminder of an over-paced world in which we are dying to just get one more

breath in, and then it happens. Slowness approaches and through the fogginess of sleep deprivation a precious moment is born in which we undoubtedly see God moving. Celebration is ultimately the driving force behind what we do. Knowing that God can and does work in the hearts of the broken and battered. The outbursts at campfires of broken homes and embittered families, the loss of self-worth in an ever progressing self-centered world, and in the moments when screaming is all that seems left to do. These are some of those hard moments but, celebration is also found in the profound moments of understanding, the moments when child-like faith shines through an unsuspecting crowd, and in the stillness of a clear star-filled night. Celebration really boils down to the joy of the Lord, the revealing of His plan, and the work of His people. Lamentation 3:22-23 says, “The Lord’s lovingkindnesses indeed never cease, For His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness” (NASB). God’s faithfulness in itself is something worth celebrating. This past year we celebrated our 25th anniversary and I challenge you to reflect on the faithfulness of God in your life and celebrate His goodness. ROSEAU RIVER BIBLE CAMP

The Manga books are awesome!

from the Bible League of Canada! This summer One Hope Canada received over 7,000 Manga books from the Bible League of Canada to distribute to thousands of campers at 23 camp locations, stretching from Pender Island, BC, to Hampton, NB. What a gift! Over half the children and youth who attend our camps come from homes with no Christian inf luence. These Manga books are an effective way of telling them who God’s Son is, and what Jesus did for them. We are deeply grateful for the ministry of the Bible League of Canada, as we could not have covered the cost. Response from the frontlines has been encouraging: The Manga books are awesome! We used them during cabin devotions. It was exciting to see the campers, and especially the boys who have a hard time sitting still, make the connection between the story we read in their Manga book and the same story in the Bible. From age 10 to the present, One Hope Canada has significantly impacted my life. The first prayer I saw answered was prayed by my school bus driver, a One Hope Canada (formerly CSSM) pastor. The first church I attended as a new believer in my teens was a One Hope Canada church. After Bible college, the first church I pastored was with the Mission. My wife, Gloria, grew up in a One Hope Canada church, attended Camp Silversides many summers, and taught VBS with the Mission two summers. Fourteen years ago, the Lord called us to rejoin the Mission as Alberta Field Director. Tell us about the Mission’s history of sending community missionaries and how that led to many churches being planted across the country.

Over 140 churches grew out of the faithful ministry of community missionaries who had a passion to take the Gospel into Canada’s remotest corners. Some rode horses, others bicycled, and some had vehicles. They taught the Bible in schools and promised children a free week at camp for memorizing 500 Bible verses. Many met the challenge, camps were started, and out of these ministries grew Sunday schools, which frequently developed into churches. What has happened to those churches?

Many churches joined denominations, went independent, or closed their doors when community demographics changed.

Then we discovered that CRA does not allow us to have bi-vocational missionaries, because we are what they call a religious order. That creates a significant problem for many pastors who need to supplement their income or work in their communities to develop relationships for sharing the Gospel. At the heart of the new vision is a partnership with the Associated Gospel Churches. Explain the partnership and why it is so important.

Over the past year, much research was done to determine if there was another non-denominational, Gospel-centered ministry seeking to plant and sustain churches in small towns or rural settings. AGC is thoroughly evangelical, has more than 150 churches, congregations, and ministries across Canada, is non-denominational, and has no missions programs or camps. Because CRA does not see them as a religious order, their pastors are free to be bivocational. AGC works in out-of-the-way communities and has developed resources to assist churches and small town pastors to be effective. We learned that

Over the next year or two, One Hope Canada churches can determine which umbrella they best fit under. Our more established churches will slide under the AGC banner if they can fully support their pastor. When a pastor needs or chooses to be bi-vocational, he can be accredited with AGC. This will see our churches and missionaries evaluating what works best in their community. We, of course, will continue to fellowship together at annual conferences and will add AGC pastors to our conference registrations when they need to come under our banner to raise support. What is your hope and prayer for the future?

Once we work through the next year or two of transition, I sincerely long to see the Gospel going into rural/small town settings all across Canada through community missionaries. I sincerely long to see churches birthed. We have the tools through the AGC and the means through One Hope Canada. Christ stated He would build His Church and it shouldn’t matter how He chooses to do it, as long as souls are saved, lives are changed, and Christ is glorified.

continue to put before us is that of the Red River Cart. The point is to emphasize that locomotion for the cart is dependent on both wheels. In a similar fashion, the mission of One Hope Canada can only be fulfilled when both the corporate wheel (Ministry Resource Centre and Front-line missionaries) and grassroots wheel (Board members, volunteers) work together. This past summer our camp ministries, which employ seventeen full-time year-round front-line missionaries, were assisted by over 856 volunteers and summer staff. In a time when we are told that volunteerism is dying, we celebrate the individuals who take time out of full and busy schedules and give many hours of dedicated service so that children and youth can hear and learn and experience the love of Jesus firsthand. of the thirty-eight board members who serve our five Manitoba camps. Allow me to introduce you to two of these individuals. Dennis Zilinski is on the board of our Roseau River Bible Camp (RRBC) and has been involved at camp for many, many years. Dennis has served as a board member for 22 out of the 25 years the camp has been operational. Joshua Scorgie pastors the Baptist Church in Erickson and recently joined us on the board of Dauphin Bible Camp (DBC).

What motivated you to become a board member of a One Hope Canada camp?

DENNIS: Initially I was asked to be involved on the board by the Gift Discernment Committee and I wanted to serve somewhere at RRBC. My initial involvement was as a counselor and I loved it, so because of my loyalty and commitment to camp, Iâ€™m still involved. JOSHUA: I was impacted as a young Christian going to Galilean Bible Camp in Ontario, which is a One Hope Canada ministry. It gave me an opportunity to serve as a young Christian leader, and the opportunity now to serve on the board of Dauphin Bible Camp is allowing me to be a part of impacting others for Christ.

God is at work, lives are being impacted ... What makes the mission of the camp you serve and One Hope Canada meaningful to you?

DENNIS: Camp ministry is so worthwhile. I grew up Catholic and knew nothing about camp. Over the years I’ve seen the reality that camp matters, the Gospel is preached and young lives are being changed. It’s also very affordable. JOSHUA: I am excited about the leadership of the camp and seeing the difference the ministry of DBC is making in the lives at my church – children, youth and adult volunteers. I see that God is at work, lives are being impacted and that’s being evidenced in my ministry here in Erickson.

What appeals to you about your board service as a volunteer activity?

DENNIS: The camaraderie of working with other Christians. This is something that I can do and be a part of something that really matters. I also have the satisfaction of being a resource to younger people. JOSHUA: In vocational ministry (as a pastor), it’s easy at times to get focused on my little part of the world and my ministry. Being involved on the board of DBC allows me to gain firsthand a broader Christian perspective…like going from a microscopic view of ministry to a more binocular view. What has been one thing that has caused you to celebrate your involvement as a board member of your One Hope Canada camp?

DENNIS: Seeing kids come to know Jesus. Because of my involvement

over the many years, I’ve come to see this as my camp – it’s a part of who I am and I see the joy that camp has brought to so many. JOSHUA: Dauphin Bible Camp's vision of Gospel ministry includes, but is not limited to, beginning people in the faith. DBC seeks to establish and grow people for a lifetime of being led more by Jesus and leading more people to Jesus. That's Biblical and holistic discipleship worth celebrating and supporting! God has been so good to us in providing us with dedicated board members such as Dennis and Joshua who give of their time, energy and resources to help make One Hope Canada ministry points the blessing they are. We celebrate their passion and faithfulness and thank the Lord for each one of them.

EVERY SUMMER, ONE HOPE CANADA’S 46 MINISTRY POINTS WELCOME MORE THAN 3,600 VOLUNTEERS. With camp ministry being so people intensive, appealing for volunteers is vital. That is where One Hope Canada’s radio ministry comes in. Since 2001, One Hope Canada has partnered with Heart of the South, enabling us to secure paid advertising for all camp ministries. It’s a great way to spread the Word. Heart of the South is a two-hour weekly Southern Gospel radio program airing on 36 stations from British Columbia to Ontario—and

around the world on the Internet. Long-time host Harold Giesbrecht explains how it works. In 1999, I joined CSSM after working for Golden West Radio. My program director said they’d like to use me now and then as a production voice for commercials. Because CSSM was a religious order, my receiving

outside income was not an option with CRA, so we arranged for Golden West to give CSSM commercials in exchange for my recording time. From small beginnings fifteen years ago, the concept grew beyond Golden West to Heart of the South, airing on three dozen stations in five provinces. In exchange, One Hope Canada receives 4,000 commercials and thousands of Minute of Hope audio stories annually, a retail value in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Harvest Celebration Three years ago, we switched from hosting an Open House in June, to a Harvest Celebration in September. We felt we needed to have the community join with us to celebrate God's faithfulness for the summer that has just passed.

We realized that we had not been sharing stories of our summer, and our supporters were missing out on many of the blessings we experience throughout the year.

At our Harvest Celebration we have leaders and staff members share how they saw God work through their campers and different situations, what was most

impactful, and what encouraged them most. Campers share what they learned through our development programs. As leaders, we get to express our gratitude to our staff and countless volunteers who help make the summer happen, and most of all, we publicly give God all the glory for the great things He has done during the summer and in the year past. As directors, we find this night of celebration to be a huge encouragement. We have come to realize the importance of reflecting on the summer, sharing where we saw God move, and celebrating God's faithfulness - whether it be the provision of staff members, spiritual and physical protection, donations, lives transformed, or how staff have grown in their faith. This celebration fills us with thankfulness and gratitude, which

in turn refreshes us for the season ahead. It is a reminder of why we do what we do! No celebration is complete without food, and so our evening always ends with an array of desserts in the dining hall! Our theme this past summer was "Throwback," and the verse we chose to go with the theme was "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, and today, and forever" (Hebrews 13:8). ...and that, friends, is a reason to celebrate!!

SHIRLEY: When I was a teen, I attended an Inter-School Christian Fellowship event in Bessie Plunkett’s Thunder Bay home. While helping with the dishes, the conversation changed to my spiritual condition, and she helped me trust the Lord for salvation.

SHIRLEY: We attended Toronto Bible College [now Tyndale University], where we met and later sensed God’s call to full-time work with Canadian Sunday School Mission. What was your first assignment with the mission?

ROSIE: We were sent to Amaranth, a wide spot on the road in southern Manitoba, in October 1953. Our first ministry was to teach religious education in schools. That grew to twenty-five schools, three Sunday schools, and Bible clubs. It was a joy to work there, even though our early mode of transportation was by foot or bicycle. During the prairie winters, traveling from school to school could be very cold. God later supplied us with Willy, our little Willys car. We also had the joy of helping to start Ochre River Bible Camp, which later moved to near Dauphin and is now Dauphin Bible Camp, one of the chain of camps with One Hope Canada. After a few years in Amaranth, Shirley’s mom had a stroke, and Shirley went home to Sault Ste Marie to help. She took a teaching job in an elementary school so she could care for her mom. I stayed in Amaranth for a couple of years but, by then, it was felt the work

was developing into a church planting ministry. Don and Donna Lee moved to Amaranth and, in God's wonderful way, helped start and build a church. I moved to the Sault where I served with CSSM as an assistant to Mary Neal, teaching Bible in public schools and working at Galilean Bible Camp. What was your next ministry?

SHIRLEY: Our interest in working with children’s ministry grew stronger and stronger, and the Lord seemed to be leading us into children’s crusades with the Mission. After consultation with CSSM’s national office, it was decided we should begin a ministry with Children’s Crusades out of Winnipeg, but reaching into other provinces. In 1966, we visited the Maritimes to observe a similar CSSM work under the Whites. That was an eventful trip with our little travel trailer, but such a valuable one. When we returned to Manitoba, we were asked to go to Amaranth for a children’s crusade. One encouragement was the provision of a unique, self-supporting chalkboard, with its overhead lighting and black light for Rosie’s backgrounds to support my Bible lesson. A man from my church in Sault Ste Marie created this teaching unit for us. Besides travelling to summer camps, our time was filled with Bible presentations to AWANA clubs, Sunday schools, church children’s clubs, and retirement homes. ROSIE: One of the greatest challenges in ministry was the stress of unloading our packed car, filled with equipment and visuals, to set up for a meeting. An even greater stress came after the meeting as we attempted to fit everything back into the car.

the black light revealed the hidden climax to the Bible presentation Rosie so cleverly created. At the camp, we were always thrilled when your letter of acceptance to our invitation arrived. We wanted you to join us more often, but realized others wanted a share of your God-centred ministry. Your valuable chapel ministry was a huge encouragement to me as a beginner in camp administration. Even yet, as I talk with former campers, some still say it was through your ministry that they began a personal relationship with the Lord. What about retirement?

SHIRLEY: Shortly after we retired in 1992, we had the privilege of going to Venezuela for a short visit. Frieda Johnson, who served there with TEAM, invited us to teach missionary children during their missionary conference. It was a joy when some of them grew in the Lord. Now, after over twenty years, we praise the Lord for His protective care. People gave so much of themselves so we could serve this way. We are thankful for the many children who responded to the call of the Gospel during those exciting and full years. These two dedicated ladies still reach out to the needs of people, praying that the Lord will enable others to present the Gospel to the spiritually needy across Canada. There will be many in heaven who found the way and the truth and the life through Rosie and Shirley’s ministry.

When you drove into Galilean Bible Camp for July chapel sessions every third year for a couple of decades, your station wagon just bulged with interesting teaching aids. Your puppets took on real life for campers as they saw ventriloquism done so effectively. The remarkable hush from the children as Shirley presented the Gospel through Bible stories was a gift from God. There was often an audible, but gentle, expression of awe from campers as

How does a mobile ministry function without mobility?

Every summer, Adventure Day Camp travels all over Manitoba, bringing evangelistic programs for kids. This past summer, nine different church or Christian groups invited Adventure Day Camp to come. We partner with the local group, helping them bring a quality recreational program, Bible Lessons, and games and crafts to the kids in their community. But, how do we get there? Several years ago, a gentleman from the Winkler Mennonite Brethren Church approached someone from our Mission, telling us about one of their amazing ministries, G-Force. They accept donations of

unwanted vehicles, have them inspected and repaired, and then release them to people in need. One Hope Canada has been in need and G-Force has helped. They have donated long-term vehicles to

Beaver Lake Bible Camp (MB), Gimli Bible Camp (MB) and, just recently, to Camp Livingstone (QC). Harold Giesbrecht, our Radio Promotional Coordinator, tells more about his experience with G-Force. "It was sometime last autumn that I noticed on our office bulletin board that Camp Livingstone was in need of a car. I contacted G-Force in Winkler about the need and, at the time, they had nothing. Later, an elderly couple donated their wheels . . . a beautiful, completely loaded Buick LeSabre! G-Force meticulously restored it to like-new condition and my wife, Natalie (who used to work at Camp Livingstone), and I had the privilege of delivering it to Camp Livingstone in March! Iâ€™m not sure that Iâ€™d ever driven a car with so many options! This gift has allowed

broke down. Pastor Keith, from the Emerson Baptist Church, got them in touch with Frank and Rob Suderman at TAC Auto Sales Quality and Price. Cooking with Fire CONFESSION … HONESTY … WAITING. I’M LEARNING THAT BEING DIRECTIONALLY CHALLENGED AND COOKING IMPAIRED ARE NOT THE ONLY THINGS I STRUGGLE WITH. I am grateful that God led us to the theme, Powered by Prayer, at Turtle Mountain Bible Camp (in Manitoba) this summer. Little did I realize the importance of endeavouring to implement more prayer into my life and the lives of staff and campers. It is easy to apply when miracles happen (we evidenced many) and when God works and answers in ways beyond anything we can ask or imagine. We rejoice in His faithful provision through donations to the camp, volunteers who come with servant hearts, and the blessing of a God-focused and praying staff team. It is easy to forget we are in a spiritual battle and need God’s armour. I’ve discovered, like Elijah who experienced incredible victory, how quickly one can

begin listening to Satan's subtle lies, drowning out God’s still small voice of truth. This results in our focusing on circumstances and becoming frustrated, overwhelmed, and defeated. How does this relate to cooking? Just as it takes the right ingredients for a tasty meal, so too do we need God and one another to get the correct spiritual results. I am a do-it-myself person. Instead, God calls us to community. For example, this summer God used His people to bless our camp through donations of meat. Working alone, I could have made four hundred pounds of ground beef into 7,000 meatballs in May. Yes, what could have been long and tiring days took only two hours while visiting and laughing with volunteers. As we learned in

the culinary class at Skills camp, there is much to learn from one another as we taste and see that the Lord is good and share the results with others. It is important to follow instructions when cooking, so too is a successful life recipe all about choices! Will we listen to God’s Holy Spirit, His Word and truth, or the deceitful lies of the enemy? Will we accept the prayers, hugs, and support of His people, or will we wallow in self-pity and struggle, trying to do things on our own?
