OUR CANADIAN MISSION FIELD:

BY THE NUMBERS

T

he early pioneers of One Hope Canada, formerly Canadian Sunday School Mission, did not envision a ministry defined primarily by camp. In fact, it was only as a result of 28 children memorizing 500 Bible verses—which earned them a free week at camp—that the mission began camp ministry in 1928.

Those children were a few of the thousands over the decades reached yearround as missionaries organized mid-week children’s programs, taught Bible class in country schools, served as community ministers in areas with no church, and over time, worked with local believers to establish summer camps.

Today, One Hope Canada is the nation’s largest camping ministry, with God affirming each year that camp is still one of the most effective ways for churches to fulfill their mandate of evangelism and disciple-making. There is much more to do, which is why in 2018 One Hope Canada’s national board established a vision statement to guide mission leadership:

This edition of Canada’s Hope presents an overview of how many of our ministry points aggressively pursue new ministry strategies to recognize Canada’s cultural and geographical realities. With ministry having no off-season, our missionaries and hundreds of volunteers evangelize and disciple children and youth year round.

Yet, we know that no effort or strategy bears lasting fruit unless the Holy Spirit is at work. That is why One Hope Canada, in cooperation with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, Christian Camping International (Canada), and the Fellowship of Christian Camps (British Columbia), is initiating a national Day of Prayer for Camp on the last Sunday in May. Through resources provided at prayforcamp.ca, churches from coast to coast can unite to ask God to bless His Word and work this summer and beyond.

Canada is changing and so will One Hope Canada as it fulfills its mandate.

But what will never change is the constant truth and hope of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and our desperate dependence on Him. Partnering in the Gospel with you,

To proactively share the good news of Jesus, we must discern realities—such as the changing face and location of Canada’s population and a secularization which undermines biblical absolutes. When the federal government changed the 2018 summer jobs grant application process, Christians responded with overwhelming financial and prayer support. As challenges continue, One Hope Canada will continue investing in new initiatives—such as launching the nation-wide Day of Prayer for Camp.

I am pleased to send a gift to One Hope Canada, grateful for the vision and Canadawide growth of the ministry pioneered by the Canadian Sunday School Mission.

At age 17 (1943), I spent the summer with CSSM, and served the Boissevain, MB, area in 1944. After Bible school, I worked in the Turtle Mountains with CSSM from the fall of 1945 through the summer of 1947, living with families who owned the farm which is now Turtle Mountain Bible Camp.

I ministered in the Dauphin area, and in 1947 was invited to become the Manitoba superintendent for CSSM. As I had applied to work in Africa with Sudan Interior Mission, I declined. My main work now is caring for Jessie, my 97-year-old wife.

We have been married 69 years.

Thank you for the summer/fall publication. I am amazed at the number of camps and that so many of them operate for the whole year.

In 1927 CSSM began, and it is also my birth year. How I praise God for His mercies and grace that gave our family the privilege of learning much from the Lord. One blessing, above all others, was my dad’s baptism at Gimli seniors camp. He knew the Lord only in his later years and the baptism gave him great peace. Camp has been important in my life—four years as a young person memorizing 300, and then 200, verses to attend; several years of attending youth camp; several years of traveling by bike with a friend to teach DVBS in the north; two summers as head cook for 200-plus campers; in 2004 attending seniors camp after returning from 40 years of mission work in Kenya. Thanks to God for gracious times spent with CSSM. I continue to pray for camps across Canada. The last publication gave a clear view of each of the 35 camps, 4 day camps, and 6 community ministry initiatives. It will be my guide for days to come.

Praise God that the Word has been preached: “Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life.”

Faithful Servant

Mae Mouland 1927–2018 Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his faithful servants (Psalm 116:15).

M

ae Mouland, a faithful CSSM missionary for 43 years, passed away in Thunder Bay, ON, on October 3, 2018, at the age of 91.

She was an example of one who left all—even her family in Saskatchewan—to serve the Lord. In 1950, at the age of 22, Mae graduated from Briercrest Bible Institute and was sent by the Canadian Sunday School Mission (now One Hope Canada) to assist Eleanor Moyer, co-founder of Dorion Bible Camp, in Ontario. Together, they taught Bible classes in 74 classrooms until 1988 when school boards closed the door on Bible teaching. Mae also served as

assistant director at Dorion Bible Camp for 35 summers.

Mae had many stories of no hydro, a swamp for refrigeration, a wood stove for cooking, and a barrel hot water heater in the camp kitchen. The night of Mae's passing, the camp was hosting 45 teachers and students when just before midnight the hydro went down, a taste of how it all began.

Even though Mae retired from DBC in February 1992, she unfailingly supported camp events and fundraisers, faithfully providing the kitchen with handmade washcloths, through to last summer. DBC was not the only mission Mae supported; she was regularly seen at mission events, the last one in September, just days before her passing. Her continued support of God’s work, and her commitment to seeing the Gospel shared in our community will motivate One Hope Canada for years.

British Columbia  AMASA I am always impressed with how the Father touches each camper— without exception—despite their intellectual ability. Like a beautiful rose, each one blossoms and I see the Father’s love bringing each camper into His wholeness and plan. What a privilege to witness the transformative and loving power of God released over each of His lambs!  ECHO LAKE BIBLE CAMP Echo Lake started a weekly teen Bible study as a follow-up initiative in a local community last fall. It began with six youth who had church/camp connections, but quickly attracted ten unchurched youth with no Christian connections. All sixteen come regularly and are excited about attending camp this summer.  HOPE BAY BIBLE CAMP Our year-round ministry is growing!

God provided full-time team members and amazing people for last summer. Campers with tough stories sometimes required more intentionality and selflessness.

When we were ready to throw in the towel, Jesus picked us up!

He continues to show the full extent of His love, reminding us that serving is at the heart of camp.  MAPLE SPRINGS BIBLE CAMP Our highlight is definitely our growing, year-round team! This year we had eight missionaries and four interns serving throughout the year, connecting with more than eight churches, youth and kids groups, and families. One afternoon we had a coffee book study and discussed our place as part of God's church.

Many camps have been a onefamily endeavor, but camp is an opportunity for God's people to serve together! We always need to grow; we need to support young people as they follow Christ and use their spiritual gifts. It is a great challenge to build a team and community with God's heart for our world!

A Memorable Summer E

ach summer at camp we meet tons of young people; more than 1,400 campers attend each year. It may be easy to think that because they are kids, campers have “kid‑size” personalities. But this is definitely not the case! Often our campers have big personalities, which makes for a memorable summer.

As part of our follow-up program, we run junior youth camp nights in local churches. We invite kids who came to NLBC to come to the church and experience youth group with a camp-style twist!

We are not always sure how many will come, or who to expect. At one youth event, we were surprised when one little guy with a big personality walked through the door. At camp he was known as the “arms guy,” because he subconsciously waved his arms above his head when excited (which, at camp, is all the time).

Other campers joined him that night, and we had a great night of fun, with games, campfire songs, and a small group Bible study. Since then, that youth group has seen nine of those camp kids become regular attendees. How amazing to see children and youth find God and get to know Him more, outside of their one week at camp!

Our Biggest Heartache and Greatest Prayer

“Fostering spiritual growth between summers has always been a challenge.”

W

e were brimming with vision when God called Jody and me to Lake of the Trees Bible Camp in 2001. That vision saw Bible camp reaching children and youth with the transforming message of God’s Word.

Although we have witnessed amazing camper faith responses, fostering spiritual growth between summers has always been a challenge. Our desire is to introduce campers to supportive relationships in local churches. Our hearts ache for campers who do not have this connection; it is our greatest prayer that they may find it.

Each camper receives a free Bible correspondence course with a follow-up letter from cabin leaders. Cabin leaders are encouraged to pray for their campers and stay in touch. Our missionary team mentors campers in a post-summer preteen boys’ club and youth ministry. Going Deep is a free camp sponsored by the Bible League of Canada for campers with the least ongoing exposure to the Gospel.

I find encouragement in the story of a family somewhat opposed to Christians who, surprisingly, toured camp and registered their children. The children came for many summers and responded with trust in Jesus Christ for forgiveness and life everlasting. They now attend youth group and their parents come to church.

Please pray this story happens many times over.

Alberta Community Ministry

 BEAR LAKE BIBLE CAMP Bear Lake's summer highlight is the Lord's amazing provision. Like many others, our camp did not receive the federal summer jobs grant; we prayed, we trusted, and God provided adequate funds to support our missionaries. That provision was apparent in other areas: we saw people leave because of injury, and God provided replacements who came with excitement and the passion to make a difference. A true blessing. The Lord is good and always takes care of us.  CAMP SILVERSIDES Camp Silversides is celebrating its ninetieth year this summer! We praise the Lord for His enduring faithfulness and the awesome privilege of sharing the Gospel with thousands of campers through the years. We also praise the Lord for calling Martha Zabel to serve as director of discipleship and administration and look forward to seeing God use her and the camp ministry this year to further His kingdom.  DAVID THOMPSON BIBLE CAMP Girls camp was a special week, with many coming to Christ. They wrestled through numerous faith questions, seeking counsel from cabin leaders and speakers. Rather than responding during an altar call, each came to Christ in her own moment. Lives were also recommitted and, at the final campfire, all gave testimonies and glory to God.  FAITH BIBLE CAMP Faith Bible Camp is running a pilot weekday camp for 6–11 year olds at a Wetaskiwin area church. We hope this camping experience will encourage them to attend our regular camps in August.  ROSS HAVEN BIBLE CAMP Last fall we refurbished the dining hall with new floors and paint, and got a good deal on new equipment. We installed new camp gates and look forward to seeing God fill the need for gate posts this spring.  WHITNEY LAKE BIBLE CAMP Preparations for the 2019 camping season are well underway and we are excited to offer a new leaders-in-training camp.

Young people, desirous of becoming leaders, will have opportunity to experience camp in a supporting role (when old enough), be mentored, and participate in leadership classes.

NORDEGG COMMUNITY MINISTRY

Connecting with Community T

he Nordegg community ministry point is always looking for ways to be Gospel-centered, and to pursue unique ministry opportunities that recognize cultural and geographical realities. Because we are isolated, about 100 kilometers from the nearest grocery store, we face many challenges to sharing the Gospel.

RICH HULL Most people who live in our community want to live Pastor here; they want to be isolated.

One unique way we approach ministry is by volunteering in the community, specifically in the community library, which is run by volunteers. It is open only when a volunteer is available to open it. As one of the main volunteers, I spend many hours each week at the library, so it can be open. This also makes it possible for me and the community to connect.

Many people today will not meet to discuss Jesus, but they will have a conversation while hanging out in the library. Even though some have chosen to live here in isolation, they do enjoy conversation and connecting with others on their terms. The community library is a safe and neutral place to have a good conversation with me. Also, through the library we provide a monthly movie night which is another unique way for the community to connect.

eryl from Joy Chapel phoned recently: “What are the rest of the names in ‘Unto us a child is born and His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, the Mighty God’?

What’s next?”

I was pleased she wanted to complete Isaiah 9:6. For about ten years we have featured Bible memory at our weekly Joy Chapel services, attended by most of our campers. Group repetition, even for guests with cognitive disabilities, enables the Holy Spirit to use those words later, comforting and encouraging them in Christ.

We are introducing verses that start with alphabet letters. Tammy, one of our camper/ guests, was trying to remember the C verse: “Come unto Me . . . and I will give you rest.”

She told me, “I cried out to Jesus last night and He put His arms around me.”

Tammy went a step further in talking to Roberta, another camper/guest who is blind. Roberta was sad because of her grandparents’ deteriorating health. Tammy told her, “You can’t worry about your grandpa and grandma too much. Cry out to Jesus.

He knows. If you don’t cry out to Jesus, how is He supposed to help you?”

The one being encouraged is now encouraging another. Beryl is doing it, too. When we shared the remainder of Jesus’ names from Isaiah 9:6 with her— Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace—she told me she wanted to include them in the Christmas cards she was giving. We know this reflects God’s beautiful plan for layers of blessing!

anadian Sunday School Mission’s Quebec ministry began in 1946. Camp Livingstone opened in 1953 and Camp des Iles joined the mission in 2012.

Together, these two camps host over 700 children and youth annually.

Two missionary couples faithfully served in Quebec for 63 years with what is now One Hope Canada.

Although retired from the mission, they remain active in ministering to those who cross their paths. Their lives are examples of love for God and others.

The Loewens began with the mission in 1972, directing Camp Livingstone until 2008. Instead of retiring from the mission, they moved into the Stanstead community, where they had been doing pulpit supply and Bible teaching in a church, bringing the hope of the Gospel to hurting people. Soon after joining the Stanstead curling club, they were asked to run a junior curling program, a confirmation that God was guiding them.

This involvement connected Wilmer and Marilyn with many parents, children, and youth, and opened the door for a day camp ministry. In 2007, they launched Beebe Day Camp and continued its ministry until 2016.

Their visitation and organized follow-up programs included winter youth sliding parties and community barbecues. The goal of each event was to share the Gospel. In addition to the youth outreach, they began a weekly Bible study in their home in 2016, which still meets with an average of 10 to 15, some not connected with any church. In 2018, the Loewens retired from One Hope Canada, but did not retire from living out their faith in the Stanstead community.

 Kent and Debbie Osborne Before joining One Hope Canada, Kent was a missionary to merchant seamen at Quebec ports for five years and for 22 years, pastored an Associated Gospel Church in Deux-Montagnes (Two Mountains), Quebec. In 2002, Kent was asked to “help for a bit” at Camp Livingstone.

What they thought was short term became 15 years with One Hope Canada. They provided leadership and support; Kent serving as Quebec field director, as Camp Livingstone’s maintenance director until 2009, and as

Quebec field director on the national board. During this time, Kent helped build the camp’s duplex/office building and was instrumental in Camp des Iles joining One Hope Canada. In 2015, realizing the need for a younger couple to do property management, the Osbornes left camp to free up housing, and moved to Stanstead to work with the Loewens, Camp Livingstone’s former directors. Kent and Debbie asked God to open a ministry door to adults and children and He brought together a house church of 20 believers and seekers—Border Community Church, which now has official registered status with the Quebec government and is working on federal charity status. Last year Kent retired from One Hope Canada, but continues to work with the Loewens and BBC. He serves on AGC’s Quebec board and hopes BBC will become a full member church with AGC in Stanstead, a town of nearly 3,000 with at least nine (and counting) closed churches.

Manitoba  ADVENTURE DAY CAMP Our November Going Deep retreat was a great success.

Three campers accepted Christ!

As we joyfully look back on God’s work during that retreat, we look forward to what He will do at Spring Break Camp. Pray for campers from the Brandon area as we prepare to minister to them at the end of March. Adventure Day Camp brings its program to communities throughout Manitoba, partnering with local churches.  DAUPHIN BIBLE CAMP So they will understand the depth of God’s love for them, we anticipate God doing big things in campers’ lives this year as we focus on discipling campers and missionaries all year. On behalf of DBC, thank you for your prayers.  ROSEAU RIVER BIBLE CAMP During a recent staff meeting, we again realized how thankful we are that God is answering an ongoing prayer. Cyprus Lodge (our capital project) is moving forward in donations of time and money. Volunteer tradespeople have blessed us, giving valuable time to see this project progress.

Plumbers, tapers, electricians, painters, and mechanical experts have often been on site since November. We need to raise about $200,000 to purchase materials, and funds for furnishing the main floor with bunks and mattresses before we can partially occupy it.  VALLEY VIEW BIBLE CAMP We ran our sixth annual snow camp in January with 40 children attending from two local First Nations communities. The Gospel was clearly presented and everyone had plenty of fun in chapel, on the tubing hill, doing crafts, and taking sleigh rides. Join us in prayer that seeds sown will take root.

GIMLI BIBLE CAMP

A

s Gimli Bible Camp’s discipleship coordinator, I focus on ministering outside of camp. It is a privilege to phone parents and visit campers’ homes and I am often shown postcards from cabin leaders, which the camp mails four times a year. One camper kept a postcard from her cabin leader in her school binder because of its encouraging words and Bible verse.

It is amazing to see God stirring hearts and growing these kids during the year. For many, camp is a starting point on their journey with Christ, even for those who do not make that choice of surrender at camp.

In December I received a call from a mom who was registering her kids for a winter discipleship retreat, where we invite campers to continue growing and learning about God. She had noticed a change in her son after the summer, that he had learned much about forgiveness. She was thankful the camp had invested in his life. Witnessing God work in the life of a young person through camp ministry is an incredible blessing.

E

ach summer for three years, I’ve made awesome connections with Turtle Mountain Bible Camp campers. However, it wasn’t until this past summer I realized the importance of maintaining these relationships throughout the year.

During my first year of cabin leading, I really connected with a girl and each summer was able to build on that relationship. But this year I challenged myself to develop that bond during the other 51 weeks of the year. I’m a youth leader at her church and we go for coffee, movies, and shopping. She often asks me to pray for her and things in her life. This has been a season of growth for both of us, a season that started at camp.

I stayed in touch with campers by being a volunteer youth leader for two churches.

Through this, I’ve made strong links with camp and non-camp kids. A few months ago, some youth asked if I would lead their Bible study, so now I meet every Sunday with grade eleven and twelve students to study God’s Word. It amazes me, week by week, to see that each student wants to be there to learn more about God. It’s really exciting and rewarding to see the impact one week of camp has had on the rest of the year, to see these students actively desiring a closer relationship with God. Camp is an amazing place for campers to meet God, a place where He works through people to influence campers for life, not just for a summer.

Ontario  DORION BIBLE CAMP During our winter teen camp, we invited campers to participate in Crucial Conversation discussions, which were deep and challenging, reflecting pressures on today’s youth. These were a highlight for campers, who can seldom articulate with Christian mentors, exploring ways to find God in it all. Their willingness to listen has encouraged them to live boldly and love fully.  KNIGHT MINISTRIES Bob and Karen Knight continue to be active in the Christian community in northern Ontario.

This summer, Bob helped present a six-week visual Bible series on the Israelite wilderness experience, followed by spiritual application.

Please pray for the 40-plus children who attend the AWANA program, that the Word will take root and that children will come to know Jesus as Savior. Please pray that the Lord keeps the door open for Bible Club to resume at the Echo Bay Central Public School in February. We thank the Lord that Bob remains cancer free and has good reports.  MONARCH BIBLE CAMP Shine is our after-school girls program, where we study the book of James, enjoy a monthly Friday fun night, and a February winter retreat.

The girls are eager to do anything we come up with and appreciate all we do. Our other group, Haven, runs on Thursdays, and has changed for the better since we moved from the school to a church. Previously, students were easily distracted and harder to motivate. In our new space, we have added a monthly meal and occasional baking. Recently, a young lady made a decision to follow Jesus!  SONSHINE BIBLE CLUBS Most children in our clubs do not attend church and, in many cases, it is the first time they learn about Jesus. They are eager!

Just think, your mission field is right in your neighborhood. If we are to expand clubs and reach more children in the Algoma district (Sault Ste. Marie), we need more volunteers.  WILLOW SPRINGS CAMP We look forward to what God has for us this summer. Last year we launched our day camp program, in addition to our overnight camps.

We have worked hard to promote day camp to new families with younger children as they may be hesitant to send children to an overnight camp. We are excited to see more campers grow close to God, close to home.

Building into Lives W

hen I was a camper, I remember thinking that summer missionaries were so cool! I wanted to be like them when I grew up. During my camper years, I developed a strong appreciation for the time they built into my life during and after camp. Through these relationships I grew in my understanding of KATIE ELLIOTT the Gospel. Staying connected with my role models Program Director throughout the year was a huge encouragement to me as a young teen! Christ’s love compelled these summer missionaries to disciple and encourage me as I grew closer to Jesus.

God works in great ways through relationships built during camp, and my story testifies to that. I spent several summers as a camper but, when old enough to volunteer, I hesitated. I received messages from a summer missionary, encouraging me to serve, despite my hesitations. I needed the extra push to start and I’m so thankful she spoke truth into my life.

Once I began, I fell in love with serving the Lord at camp and spent seven summers volunteering at Galilean. Not only that, but God worked out the details for me to begin full time ministry here! What a privilege it has been to experience first hand the purpose of follow-up. What an opportunity to build into the lives of our campers and young summer missionaries who return year after year.

O

ur ministry beyond camp in the Rainy River district takes on many exciting opportunities!

In the fall, Mark coordinates trips to Guatemala, taking teens and their parents on mission adventures to see the world through God’s eyes. Last November, we helped build 24 homes, constructed a school, conducted numerous Bible schools and church services, and served people scavenging at dumps. These are but a few of many highlights. In addition to our outreach instilling a sense of the Great Commission, we see teens surrendering their lives to Jesus Christ in new and exciting ways. In November, eight of the 70 participants were baptized during the missions trip!

Other facets of ministry beyond camp are the Apples of Gold, Sunflowers, and Northern Lights discipleship programs that reach children and teens. The Bible studies, crafts, and theme meals deepen faith in Jesus Christ and increase biblical knowledge.

Another avenue of our ministry is at the remote Pikangikum First Nation in the Sioux Lookout district of northwestern Ontario. Of its 3,000 population, 80 percent are under the age of 25.

Our primary responsibility is teaching 28 Bible classes in Eenchokay Birchstick School each week.

Beyond the school day, there are many opportunities to minister in crisis situations; Pikangikum is gripped by spiritual darkness, and we have been blessed to bring the light of Jesus in many amazing ways. Please pray that the Holy Spirit will penetrate the darkness that perpetuates issues in so many lives. Truly, Jesus is the only answer!

We are also blessed to conduct a network of vacation Bible schools during the summer. They are an effective way to reach children and teens who do not attend camp.

An annual highlight is the late August eight-day wilderness canoe trip for 35 teens. What a powerful way to instill and nurture faith in ways that far transcend Bible camp. The experience of being immersed in God’s creation and removed from any trace of civilization or technology results in the Lord doing miraculous things!

Our ministry beyond camp is an exciting way to fulfill One Hope Canada’s mandate of reaching those with the least opportunity to hear. Will you pray for us? We desperately need an army of prayer warriors to uphold us before the throne of grace with each ministry we conduct.

A Vision

that Compels

The first of two articles on One Hope Canada’s vision statement by National Co-director Bill McCaskell

I

n response to our nation’s rapidly changing culture, One Hope Canada’s national board established a vision statement in 2018 to guide mission leadership and its 45 ministry points as together they consider future ministry endeavors.

The vision states that One Hope Canada will intentionally equip current and next generation leaders to be Gospel-centered and, aggressively pursue new ministry strategies that recognize cultural and geographical realities.

“Our new vision statement will focus our energies and initiatives for the coming years, ensuring that One Hope Canada can continue fulfilling the mandate God has given this mission since 1927,” explained National Board Chair Ferdi van Dongen.

In this brief article, I look at the second part of the vision statement and show, that though unique, the mission’s 45 ministry points are united around One Hope Canada’s purpose and are discovering ways to actively pursue ministry strategies to fulfill that purpose. This often begins with a year-round focus on ministry.

“At one time we were known for summer-only ministry, but not anymore!” commented Bobby Cooper, director of Hope Bay Bible Camp. “Much has changed, and we’re almost as busy now in our weekly yearround ministry work.”

Bobby and his team have discovered that Hope Bay Bible Camp, located on Pender Island off the east coast of Vancouver Island, has a unique opportunity— due to its geographical reality—to fulfill the mission’s purpose: there are very few churches for the island’s more than 2,200 permanent residents. “The need for a consistent community on the island,” said Bobby, “led to weekly services, Sunday school, a Friday evening youth group, and a teen Alpha study. All these added to what people outside of camp ministry refer to as the off-season.”

Martin and Shannan Lord, directors of Dorion Bible Camp, an hour east of Thunder Bay, agree there is no off-season. “We are a small community and most people know how busy we constantly are,” commented Shannan. “There are year-round ministry opportunities, whether it’s weekly youth Bible studies in Thunder Bay or weekend retreats at the camp throughout the year.”

Martin pointed out that historically, summer Bible camp ministry was a byproduct of ministry that happened year-round. “In the formative years, summer camps were an extension of a year-round school ministry. Back then, when all missionaries conducted Bible studies in schools, it was an effective way to recruit summer campers.”

Our ministry points are discovering that building relationships with community organizations and churches is key to pursuing new ministry strategies that recognize cultural realities. “Our camp developed a relationship with Dilico—the local aboriginal children services organization,” said the Lords.

“When foster parents need respite, the campers come to our camp for a week. This forms 50 percent of our summer campers.”

Ryan Skaling, director of Blomidon Bible Camp on the Bay of Fundy, says the new vision statement spurs him to connect with the local church. “Seeing BBC as an extension of the church changes how we minister yearround. I want to find creative ways, such as using camp ambassadors or camp days in churches, to connect our campers with a church. I also look to find how the camp can help the church with training and encouragement.

This May, one of our day camp missionaries, Andrew Dorey, will hold a training session for the local church on teaching and building relationships with kids who have behavioral challenges.”

There are challenges to aggressively pursuing new ministry strategies—a lack of financial resources or time are common—but so is being misunderstood by those our missionaries minister to.

“My heart breaks when I see people in our community misunderstand our motive to love them,” said Bobby Cooper. “But this is how Jesus must feel every day. If my heart breaks, how much more is His breaking for those He made in His image? It is a powerful reminder that part of my job is to build trust with my community.

I need them to know how much I love them because that is how God has chosen to show His love to them.

We love because He is love, and therefore He can’t help but love.”

From coast to coast, One Hope Canada missionaries and volunteers make every effort to love over 7,000 children and youth each year in non-summer ministries and will continue to do so. Why? Because they resonate with Paul being compelled by the love of Christ. It is the love of Christ that spurs them to take an honest look at their mission field and respond with creativity, energy, and a desperate dependence upon God. This, as they move ahead with the eternal hope of the Gospel.

Saskatchewan  ESTEVAN BIBLE CAMP Follow-up is a vital part of camp that can be difficult, so we are encouraged when supporting churches rally around our weekly kids club.

Organized by a couple from our camp board, it is mostly staffed by volunteers from supporting churches. We are excited to see kids learn more about God’s Word throughout the year and make new decisions to serve Him.  KENOSEE LAKE BIBLE CAMP We are celebrating the second year of our winter teen discipleship program, COLD (Christ Oriented Leadership Development).

Each weekend retreat sees new youth join the program as interest in COLD grows. It has been great working with these teens, as their faith and knowledge of scripture mature.  MANITOU LAKE BIBLE CAMP This year we did in-depth follow-up Bible studies with our leaders in training (LIT) and our BOLD (Becoming Obedient Lifelong Disciples) camp participants. When finished, we will have completed an overview of the whole Bible. Our LITs are separated by distance, but this study brings them together online. What a joy to be part of this journey, as passion for studying God’s Word grows in their lives.  RANGER LAKE BIBLE CAMP Ranger Lake Bible Camp welcomed about 876 campers in 2018. What a blessing! We look forward to what 2019 holds as we begin our promotional tour around Saskatchewan to many youth groups, schools, and churches.

Stoney has hired Jason and Jen Leo as full-time associate directors. The plan: train them for complete operation of the camp before they move into the directors position.

The Leos and their three children come from Three Hills, AB, and start in May. Stephanie Schmidt, from Humboldt, SK, recently joined our team as administrative assistant.  TORCH TRAIL BIBLE CAMP Camp sure has some amazing moments.

We were reminded of this when a camper decided to follow Jesus, just moments before going home. We may have been tired and done, but the Spirit was still working.

We praise the Lord for these moments.

t Luseland Bible Camp, we are excited to build relationships with campers and summer missionaries, and to see those relationships continue long after the camp season. Camp weeks are filled with unique situations that help us get to know one another quickly and to talk about things that really matter.

MARILYN KIRK Once those significant relationships begin, it’s special to Camp Director see the caring and mentoring continue throughout the year in friendships that run deep. We each need others to care about us and to pray for us when things are going well, even more so when life gets tough.

We often hear of such conversations among our summer missionaries and between them and campers. Spontaneous support groups are formed and the love that Jesus speaks of is reflected in caring and tangible ways. We need people in our lives whom we trust, heroes to look up to. We’re learning to do that better. By being transparent with what happens in our lives, others can relate and understand they are not alone.

Jesus created us for community, and building trusting relationships makes that work.

Most special for me at this time of year is receiving applications from summer missionaries who want to serve at LBC again. One question they answer on the form is how God is working in their lives. Reading those answers is the best part of my job, because their growth is evident and often reflects those ongoing friendships. We look with anticipation to God’s work in many hearts and lives.

e work hard on follow-up during the post-summer months. It is one of the most challenging parts of camp ministry, and we want to close the gap as much as possible. We do that through our Parkland Party (a monthly regional youth event in our area), Horse Play (a weekly Bible study involving horses), and the Madge Lake Bible Camp dessert theatre production during the Christmas season.

A number of years ago, a few youth would travel to one of the camp’s supporting churches to attend youth group with camp friends. Some traveled an hour or more, just to be with friends and be encouraged in their faith. Eventually the youth leaders created Parkland Party, a monthly regional event. More youth groups in the Parkland region have joined.

Horse Play is a weekly ministry that intentionally reaches campers post-summer.

It targets campers with an interest in horses and, through weekly Bible lessons, gives them more understanding of who God is. Horse Play is for kids who might not come to a normal church event, bridging the gap between events at church and camp. Follow-up Coordinator Naomi Tensen says, “Horse Play has been a real opportunity to speak into the lives of kids and youth. A girl who came last year attended camp this summer and I've had neat conversations with her about God and horses while giving riding lessons. It's amazing that I can take something that happens in the arena and show how God uses similar situations in our lives.”

MLBC also hosts a dessert theatre production. The summer missionaries and camp board meet each fall to put it together, but it is so much more than putting on a show. A close sense of community forms each year between cast and crew. Leaders show the team how to use their gifts and talents to honor and glorify God, while ministering to people in their area with the Gospel. God has blessed this part of our ministry in so many ways. It has become our biggest fundraiser each year.

ot only do we have the responsibility of ministering during the summer, but also have many opportunities to be witnesses for Jesus Christ year round.

At Dallas Valley Ranch Camp, we try to keep our campers and families informed about the upcoming summer through newsletters, sent out several times a year.

The newsletters build excitement for returning to camp, teach more about Christ, and strengthen the campers’ faith. We encourage cabin leaders to send postcards at Christmas to keep their campers connected and encouraged in their faith. Our booths at area events promote the camp and provide opportunities to reconnect with campers as we chat, play games, or simply encourage them in their walk with the Lord.

There’s more to impacting children than just promoting our camp; it involves direct contact, prayer, and building lasting relationships. Year-round connections with campers provide opportunities for them to grow closer to Jesus Christ. Cabin leaders are mentors and role models, and when campers see the effort and care a leader puts into building a friendship, it motivates them to do likewise, not only with others, but also with the Lord. We want to mentor and build strong Christian leaders; they will more likely achieve that goal if they have a deep relationship with Jesus, great experiences at camp, and ongoing support during the year.

Quebec  CAMP DES ILES I was dropping off one of my camp girls after a one-on-one coffee date when she gave me a bracelet with an infinity charm. “It’s to remind you to live in light of eternity,” she said. For weeks we had been talking about living our everyday lives in light of eternity, with Christ as our focus. My heart was blessed!

n 2009, the Roy family attended Camp Livingstone’s family camp. Sophie Roy was 13. As the years progressed, she and her brother and older sister served as cabin leaders and in other camp positions. Along the way, her church began TGIF, a Friday night kids and youth outreach. Today, Sophie leads this group and a similar outreach in Sherbrooke. These ministries are follow-up opportunities to summer campers from these regions. Kids invite friends, the Gospel is faithfully presented, and many choose to attend camp the following summer! My daughter and sons, along with other summer missionaries, have volunteered to help Sophie at these clubs over the past few seasons.

We are pleased to announce that in January, Sophie started a year-round position as Camp Livingstone’s follow-up and discipleship coordinator.

Her objectives: continue this work, lead camp follow-up rallies, support summer missionaries in carrying out discipleship activities, and start two kids clubs by partnering with area churches in communities that have no outreach to children. Please pray for her and other summer camp leaders as they invest in children’s lives even when there is snow on the ground and summer is a long way off.

The Doreys

 BLOMIDON BIBLE CAMP We love the way a family is using Blomidon Bible Camp to help neighborhood kids hear about Jesus.

Besides holding a book club and bringing them to church, they partner with the kids to bless their community by doing yard projects. While they serve, the kids earn a week of camp.

The family’s goal: bring as many kids as possible.  HAMPTON BIBLE CAMP We are excited to see progress on the much-needed expansion to our main facility. This fall and winter, we had a wonderful opportunity to host a weekly club, Bible Bunch. At this club, our day camp manager provides in-depth Bible teaching to regular attendees of our day camp program.  MIRAMICHI VALLEY BIBLE CAMP Miramichi Valley Bible Camp was recently blessed with a great donation that will allow us to do further ministry.

We are excited for God’s blessing and feel energized going into summer camp, where we will have further opportunities to serve the young people and families of Miramichi.  NEWFOUND LIFE BIBLE CAMP We shared the Christmas story in eight public schools, with 2,290 students and teachers listening intently to the story of our Savior’s birth. It was evident people were praying. A Muslim boy told us, “I’m not a Christian but thanks for telling the story.” An intern recalled Lori teaching her the same story in 2006 when she was a student.

God promises His Word will not return void. Please keep praying for God’s Spirit to work in hearts.  SANDY COVE BIBLE CAMP We look forward to celebrating 70 years of ministry at Sandy Cove Bible Camp this year. Sandy Cove, CSSM’s first Atlantic provinces camp ministry, was established on the sandy shores of Davidson Lake, New Brunswick, in 1949. Over the decades, thousands have been impacted by God and His Word.

I lead a small, but tightly knit weekly college and career group at Coxheath, near Sydney, where we play games, fellowship, and have a Bible study. These young adults have a passion to know the truth and spread it.

One evening, we went to downtown Sydney, sharing the Gospel on the street.

What a great opportunity to strengthen our faith.

Early in February, Cape Breton Bible Camp held a camp day at a rented Christian school to reach out to the community. We had regular camp activities such as games, lunch, and chapel. We proclaimed the Gospel of Jesus Christ, while allowing kids to experience a taste of this summer’s camp!

I serve this island through discipleship, evangelism, preaching, and teaching, with a particular emphasis on the Margaree area.

A Catalyst for Generosity

his summer, my daughter returned to Dauphin Bible Camp in Manitoba for her tenth summer as a wrangler. The camp community captured her heart years ago and, even now as a young adult, her dedication to camp ministry hasn’t wavered. Being able to wrangle at DBC was a critical factor in choosing the type of work and education program she would pursue.

But she is not alone in her commitment to camp ministry.

While some serve for only a season, others generously give their time year after year. Camp ministries can change kids’ lives, but they often fly below the charity radar. I am grateful for the many who faithfully orient their finances to support camp communities. Some regular donors give over many years; others fund building projects or special initiatives. Much camp ministry funding

comes from direct cash donations. Long before people open their wallets to share resources, they decided that giving and investing in others is not only worthwhile, but contributes to a world where everyone wins.

n the context of Jesus’ provision of a huge catch of fish, we are told of Peter’s fear, a fear related to his own perceived necessities. How would his family’s needs be provided for? How could they survive apart from what he was most familiar with? Jesus was teaching him, through the miracle, that the effectiveness of Peter’s calling and ministry would be through trusting in Jesus’ sufficiency alone. We face this same need—to depend upon Jesus’ sufficiency as individuals and in our ministries today.

In the first twelve chapters of Acts, Jesus fulfilled His promise to Simon Peter to catch men. Peter, relying on Jesus’ sufficiency, boldly proclaimed the Gospel in different places and to individuals and people groups, representing cultural and geographical realities. For example, in Acts 3, Peter and John go to the temple and encounter a lame man asking for alms.

How could they benefit this beggar? Only with Christ’s resources. “In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk” (7-8). And the beggar did!

We have this same promise and sufficiency available for our daily life and ministry, through Jesus Christ’s abiding presence, the Spirit’s enablement, and the light of the Word for guidance. May we take more time to meditate on the greatness and sufficiency of Christ.
