hallenges are not new for our missionary team. Each summer, camp directors work hard to find young (and not so young) adults willing to work long hours with little pay. Sometimes they face extreme conditions (2017 and 2018: forest fires and evacuations), and still manage to plan unforgettable experiences for hundreds of children a week. Why? For the sole purpose of presenting Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. These are the challenges we have come to expect and each summer we see the body of Christ rise to meet them. Five months ago we faced a new challenge when the federal government changed the Canada Summer Jobs Grant application process. Our decision not to sign a document that compromised our biblical convictions resulted in an estimated need of $250,000 to support summer missionaries and, to cover legal and media relations costs.

HOW DID THE BODY OF CHRIST RESPOND?

We heard from dozens of believers. “Stand firm . . . Rely on God to provide.” That encouraged us to appeal to more than two thousand supporters. Wow! The response was four times the usual—over $114,000 came in. Many camps spoke to their constituents; the results were similarly encouraging. This equipped One Hope Canada to handle dozens of media inquiries across the country, consult Christian lawyers due to the government’s continued interaction with our camps, and see our camps faithfully share the Gospel week after week with thousands of children and youth. Challenges such as a sudden loss in government funding are healthy for One Hope Canada and, by extension, the church in Canada. Years of government assistance can lull us into believing that Caesar, not God, provides what is needed to fulfill our mandate. A lesson well learned. We are both encouraged and thankful to our Lord and to you, our faithful supporters, for what we have experienced and learned over these past five months. One Hope Canada need not fear the future as long as the body of Christ continues to unite in desperate dependence upon God as the source of all we need. Partners in the Gospel with you.

One Hope Canada’s purpose has remained essentially unchanged since the mission’s founding in 1927. Our vision, revisited over the last few months by mission leadership and the national board, gives us a laser focus for the next decade. Although recently rearticulated, our core values have been part of the mission’s DNA from the beginning. PURPOSE

We present the Gospel, particularly to those having the least opportunity to hear of Christ and especially to children and youth, and we disciple believers for living and serving through His Church. VISION

CORE VALUES

We are desperately dependent on God. We accomplish nothing of eternal worth apart from God’s Spirit empowering us, and we practice this dependence upon God by being Christ centered and Gospel focused (John 15:5; Romans 1:16). We are completely confident in the Bible. The Bible is our final authority in all matters of faith and practice (2 Timothy 3:16). We are continually committed to being family. The Holy Spirit, through the Gospel, creates a new community where we intentionally love and serve one another (John 15:9-17; Colossians 3:12-15).

To intentionally equip present-and-next-generation leaders to be Gospel centered, and to aggressively pursue new ministry strategies that recognize cultural and geographic realities.

While attending Vacation Bible School in July 1964, I asked the Lord Jesus to be my Savior. Faithful to His promises, He has kept me near to Him through all these years and has guided me through many of life’s storms. I received a certificate signed by Lillian Zwicker and Annabelle Fletcher and have kept it as a special treasure all these years. This certificate is a faithful reminder of how and when the Lord Jesus reached into my life and planted His love deep in my heart.

On June 22, 1940, I was baptized by D.R. (Walter) Aikenhead. Before going into the water, we sang Trust and Obey and Mr. Aikenhead prayed. Just received the magazine Canada’s Hope Winter/ Spring 2018. Could not help but send a note to you— I’m always interested, especially in Sandy Cove Bible Camp [NB]. Both my children, Wendy (now 61) and Randy (now 58), were saved there. When Wendy was in Bible school, she worked at Sandy Cove as a counselor. I became involved by taking a week off work for a couple of summers to help as an assistant cook. Met many wonderful people. I have so many great memories, I just had to send a quick note of appreciation for all Bible camp work across our great country.

I was raised in CSSM churches in Alberta 60 years ago. Times are changing, but I believe we may have to go back to older, more secure positions in regard to summer worker funding. When I counselled in the 1960s and 1970s, we expected no remuneration except what came in by the end of the week (certainly not any aid from a godless government). Those few dollars didn’t amount to much even then; a summer worker was expected to be essentially a volunteer. I think it needs to return to this quickly. As a young worker, I felt led to obey the Spirit’s impulse to serve a week or two at camp, and I found a way to fund myself. God provided then and He is still able to do so.

Faithful Servant Les Johnson 1935 – 2018

Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his faithful servants (Psalm 116:15).

t is with sadness that we announce the passing of Les Johnson, a faithful CSSM missionary. After some weeks of illness, Les passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 21, 2018, and is now in the arms of our blessed Lord Jesus Christ! Les and Myrtle Johnson served with CSSM Alberta for 47 years. In April, we were honored to present them with a Lifetime Service Award at our banquet in Three Hills, Alberta. They began their CSSM ministry in 1966, pastoring Bonanza Gospel Chapel. After that, they spent several years church planting, helping build congregations in Silver Valley, St. Paul, and Clandonald. In 1970 they became involved at David Thompson Bible Camp, and two years later Les became camp director, continuing in that role for 25 years. He also was camp director at Whitney Lake Bible Camp for six years, starting in 2000. Les continued with CSSM/One Hope Canada as a pastor until his retirement in 2013, filling in where needed. After a life spent serving the Lord in obedience and faithfulness, he has now heard the words, "Well done, good and faithful servant.”

British Columbia  ECHO LAKE BIBLE CAMP This summer we experienced an upheaval to our summer program with the threat of forest fire. Because of that threat, the last two weeks of camp had to be cancelled and the camp evacuated. Despite that, it was one of our most dynamic ministry seasons, expanding well beyond the walls of our camp. God’s presence, protection, and provision were so evident.  HOPE BAY BIBLE CAMP This year was marked by growth: more campers, passionate team members, decisions for Christ, and church and youth ministry putting down roots on Pender Island. God is good!  LAKE OF THE TREES BIBLE CAMP We rejoice over the record number of campers and faith responses to Christ. Thick smoke hampered just a few camp days, and rain fell when needed. Evacuation insurance was finally resolved from July 2017.  NESS LAKE BIBLE CAMP We have been trying to develop our follow-up ministry to campers. The other day, while promoting Ness Lake Bible Camp at the mall, a mom stopped at our booth to say her son had decided to follow Jesus at our camp. Since then he has read his Bible every day; now she is wondering if we would recommend a church where she could take her son. We pray God will continue the good work He has started, not only in this boy’s life, but also in the rest of his family.

Love in Action

hile “Patrick” and I were on a walk, he formally asked if I would do him the honor of becoming his wife. I told him I was honored he would ask, but I was already married. He replied, “Easy come, easy go! Love down the toilet!” Our Amasa campers are like any other sector of the population: they want someone special to love and someone who will love them in return. As we tell our leaders, your prime duty as a cabin leader: “Love our people!” The challenge we face in our camp is explaining and demonstrating the different types of love in the Bible: romantic love, the brotherly love of friendship, and God’s divine love. How does that happen when some campers do not hear, see, speak, or understand well? The answer? God’s love is love in action! Making Disciples

“I am so thankful for every person who listened to Jesus' call to go and make disciples this summer.”

ith only a week until summer camp, we looked through our list of everyone we knew who might be able to cabin lead. Having asked all my family, friends, acquaintances, and third cousins, I felt like a salesman going door to door. More campers had signed up than ever before. We had many great leaders, including leaders in training, and alumni, but needed a few more. It is hard to find people who will sacrifice other things to serve and lead in God’s kingdom! The day before our mandatory summer missionary training started, Dylan called from Lloydminster, SK. He loves God and desperately wants an abundant life of serving and knowing Jesus. We talked and he said, “I'd love to come, but I'm committed to a job. I'll ask if I can quit today, but I doubt they will let me.” I reminded him that training started the next day. Later, he texted that his employer supported his going and he was on his way. Dylan drove twelve hours through the night, making it just in time to start a full day of training! He was amazingly committed to his kids, shared thoughtful devotionals every night, and introduced many of his boys to Jesus! This September I visited a church and asked some kids what part of camp they liked best. A little boy said, "My leader, Wrench”, Dylan's camp name. I am so thankful for every person who listened to Jesus' call to go and make disciples this summer. I am also thankful for those who donated so young people could serve. Praise God, He always provides but asks us to participate in calling people to serve. Unfortunately, so many of us often think of ministry as a second priority. But Jesus said the time is now! The harvest is ready, and we have the greatest news, the greatest friend, and He is the hope for the whole world; there is nothing more important than that! Alberta  CAMP SILVERSIDES We praise God for an incredibly blessed summer, proclaiming the Gospel to 600 people. One hundred and four campers gave their lives to Christ and 10 campers were baptized in the lake! How great is our God!  DAVID THOMPSON BIBLE CAMP This summer, a young camper who had planned to attend with her best friend, experienced the tragic death of that friend. During our testimony campfire, she shared how she had been afraid she might be judged because of her sadness. Instead, she had felt accepted and couldn't believe how much everyone loved her!

 FAITH BIBLE CAMP One camper, with moderate to severe asthma, has struggled every year with running and physical activities. Yet she keeps returning, and hopes to be a summer missionary in two years because of the relationships she is building at camp.

 JOY CHAPEL Hearing the Gospel at our special needs camp, 51-year-old Susan kept repeating, “I wish Jesus would forgive all the bad stories of my life.” “He has forgiven them,” we encouraged as she prayed, using her own words. A few minutes later, I saw her sitting on the ground, leaning back against a wall, her head bowed and hands clasped together. A precious sight!  NORDEGG COMMUNITY MINISTRY This last year we had many opportunities to build relationships in the community. Our Sunday service provides an opportunity for many full and part-time community members to praise and worship God. We have also provided a time and place for the community to watch a movie. With two other churches, we provide Christmas presents for children on the Big Horn Reserve.  WHITNEY LAKE BIBLE CAMP Heading into summer, Whitney Lake Bible Camp had a cabin leader shortage, especially with males. As we counted down the days and hours to camp opening, we saw God miraculously provide more than enough male leaders from as far away as Nova Scotia. Some had no previous connection with our camp. He is so faithful!

hus spake King Henry V as he faced his army on St. Crispin's Day, and thus spake our intrepid leader, Greg, as he faced our small assembly of team members before the last kids camp of our season. We were heading into one of our largest camp weeks with a very small team. That morning, in church, we had prayed God would send more workers for the kitchen and the boys cabins. Then we received word that two kitchen workers wouldn't be coming. We had eleven special diets to cook for, and about 100 campers. We were desperate for help. So King Henry's speech (from a Shakespearean play) was delivered to put our focus back on the God who gives the victory, rather than on our abilities. Daniel showed up at team meeting. A mature and experienced leader, he had come to work as a cabin leader. A young, inexperienced Micah also offered to help. Our three youngest daughters, Robyn, Cheyanne, and Sarah helped in the kitchen, and another Micah volunteered for the kitchen, proving to be a dedicated and valuable worker. A wrong number resulted in Luke coming to work in the kitchen, and Carol to clean. There’s more! Hearing of our desperation, Katherine came to prepare gluten-free foods. By the time she arrived, our kitchen was bursting at the seams and she didn't need to stay! We were blessed to see how God provided when we felt desperate. We had had fleeting thoughts of calling a cabin of boys and telling them not to come, because we lacked the team, but that week we welcomed eleven souls into God's kingdom. Surely, He provides for His work. At week’s end, we again quoted Shakespeare’s King Henry, with alterations: “And gentlemen in Alberta now abed shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here, and hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks that fought with us in Kids 4 camp.” ROSS HAVEN BIBLE CAMP www.rosshavenbiblecamp.com

Bear Lake Bible Camp Joins

One Hope Canada

“One Hope Canada is excited to welcome Bear Lake Bible Camp.”

he newest addition to the One Hope Canada family is Bear Lake Bible Camp (BLBC). Founded in 1936, the like-minded and well-established ministry was owned and operated by Peace River Bible Institute. BLBC joined One Hope Canada April 1, 2018. Located 20 minutes northwest from Grande Prairie, AB, the camp is situated near a steady and growing population base on the beautiful Bear Lake shoreline. The property has popular recreational facilities such as a rock climbing tower, giant swing, 18 hole disc golf course, indoor gym, BMX track, remote control racing course, and a dynamic beachfront. The main building complex, which welcomes guests year round, houses offices, kitchen, dining hall, tuck shop, bathrooms, lounge, and some sleeping accomodations. Without doubt, the star attraction is the old chapel. Originally constructed in 1941 as a barn, the barebones, rustic structure has witnessed thousands of children, youth, and adults encounter the Gospel, many for the first time. Our first summer together, led by Director Danny Johnston and Assistant Director Jayden Wilson, saw BLBC welcome 571 campers and 40 special needs day campers. Approximately 41% of them had little to no previous exposure to the Gospel. Welcome. I’m so glad you’re here! e often use these words to greet guests or family members to our home. The words express a genuine joy at seeing family and friends. In the same way, I used these words to welcome each One Hope Canada church that recently joined the Associated Gospel Churches. Strategic ministry partnerships are valuable to the AGC. Our partnership with One Hope Canada has been a blessing as we have welcomed four churches into the AGC family and anticipate seven more in the near future. The AGC’s vision is to be a movement of healthy, reproducing churches. AGC sees reproduction in several ways—in new church plants, daughter works from existing churches, multi-site churches, or partnerships with like-minded ministries such as One Hope Canada. Each of these works interdependently to see many people come to Jesus and walk as disciples. So... Welcome. I’m so glad you’re here!

STEPS TO AFFILIATION WITH THE AGC

In 2015, One Hope Canada entered into dialog with the Associated Gospel Churches of Canada. The focus of the discussions was simple: how to form a strategic, long-term partnership with the AGC, resulting in the Gospel being more effectively proclaimed in Canada. One Hope Canada facilitates dialog between a One Hope Canada church and the Associated Gospel Churches (AGC), encouraging affiliation with the AGC.

The One Hope Canada church votes to begin the process of applying for AGC affiliation.

The church formally applies to join the AGC.

The pastor applies to be credentialed (and ordained, in some cases) with the AGC.

One Hope Canada’s Ministry Resource Centre helps the church develop a constitution and bylaws that will meet the requirements for religious society and charitable status.

Applications for religious society and charitable status are submitted and the long wait for a response begins, sometimes with amendments along the way.

AGC approves the One Hope Canada church for affiliation and the pastor for credentialing/ordination.

Religious society and charitable status are granted.

One Hope Canada transfers land and building titles to the church. A celebration Sunday is held to welcome the church into the AGC family.

CHURCH TRANSITIONS Fairview Gospel Chapel (Dave and Vera Brisbin), Faith Gospel Fellowship, Ft. Vermilion (presently seeking a pastor), Penhold Church of Hope (Dave and Heather Trenholm), and Two Hills Fellowship Chapel (Warren and Ellen Charlton) have been formally accepted into the AGC and their pastors credentialed/ ordained. Pastor Warren convenes a coffee fellowship of AGC pastors in his area of Alberta; Pastor Dave (Brisbin) hopes to establish a similar fellowship in the Peace River area. Penhold is waiting for word on its application for charitable status. Myrnam Community Church (Gary and Bonnie Dupuis), and Silver Valley Gospel Chapel (Mike Driedger) have been approved for AGC affiliation. Pastor Gary has been approved for AGC credentials and ordination; Myrnam is waiting for word on its charitable status; Silver Valley has its charitable status and Pastor Mike is waiting for his credentialing interview. Bonanza Gospel Chapel (Brian and Debbie Smallwood), Little Smoky Country Chapel (Fred and Grace Sherwood), and Mannville Community Church (Dave and Leslie Kenney) have applied for AGC affiliation and are working on their documents. Pastor Fred and Pastor Dave have been approved for AGC credentials and ordination. Bethel Gospel Chapel, Wanham (Mike and Helen Hicks) and Red Earth Creek Community Church (Lyle and Anita Wahl) have voted to apply for AGC affiliation and are working on their documents. Pastor Mike is approved for AGC credentials and Pastor Lyle is already credentialed and ordained by the AGC.

COMMUNITY MINISTRY INITIATIVES (CMI)

One Hope Canada’s partnership with the AGC empowers the mission to help community missionaries reach the least opportunity areas of Canada through children's, youth, and other community-based ministries. In some cases, these CMIs become church plants led by the AGC (as in Stanstead, Quebec); in other cases, our community missionaries faithfully continue to share the hope of Jesus with their community, under the leadership of One Hope Canada. COMMUNITY MINISTRY INITIATIVES IN ALBERTA

(currently remaining with One Hope Canada)

Nordegg Community Ministry (Rich and Cindy Hull) serves the hamlet of Nordegg, 90 kilometers west of Rocky Mountain House. Because Rich and Cindy have become an integral part of the fabric of Nordegg, Rich is known as the community pastor in a community with no other formal Gospel witness. Joy Chapel (Corney and Evangeline Thiessen and Jonathan and Allison Lorentzen) serves over 150 special needs people in the Grande Prairie area through a midweek supper and church service. During the summer, the Thiessens and Lorentzens minister to the same community through three weeks of summer camp.

Longview Bible Fellowship (Gil and Andrea Kidd) is transitioning to the Canadian Baptists of Western Canada, with which Pastor Gil is already credentialed. There is already an AGC church in geographical proximity, so this was a good alternative for Longview.

Our partnership also provides opportunity and training for AGC pastors from smaller churches to raise personal support through One Hope Canada, enabling them to minister full time in their communities. For example, four pastors of transitioning churches continue to receive some raised support through One Hope Canada (Little Smoky, Mannville, Penhold, and Red Earth Creek). Manitoba  DAUPHIN BIBLE CAMP What an amazing summer! We were so blessed to have the summer missionaries we needed each week. Our new paintball program was awesome and we look forward to a new discipleship program planned over the winter!  GIMLI BIBLE CAMP God brought enough volunteers to camp so ministry to children could happen: ladies in their 70s and 80s worked long hours in the kitchen; a health officer gave her summer; cabin leaders came the one week we needed them most. Every summer we look for more volunteers than we have recruited, but God knows our needs and works it out. Our 2018 highlight: again being humbled by God’s faithfulness. For 90 years He has provided enough volunteers so children could learn of His love for them.  TURTLE MOUNTAIN BIBLE CAMP We had an amazing summer with a record-breaking number of campers! God Is Moving

his summer, Adventure Day Camp traveled to eight communities in Manitoba. Each community won a special place in our team’s heart; it was clear God was moving in these places. Here are several stories from this summer. Our week in Shilo was different than anticipated. We expected about 20 campers, as in past years. To our surprise, the first day produced only five. I say I believe that numbers aren’t what matter in ministry; if only one person hears the Gospel, a good work is being done. But that week, I more fully understood that truth. Four of the five campers had never heard the story of Jesus and were hungry for it! They were so drawn to the story and lessons we often had only a few minutes left for games, because of answering questions and teaching about God. The majority of our 25 Emerson campers were unfamiliar with the Gospel but seemed interested in learning. A group of 10-to-12-year-old girls loved the lessons and asked how they could apply them to their lives. By week’s end, there were new commitments to Christ and some girls asked for random verses, so they could find them in their new Bibles!

he days were growing longer and temperatures steadily rose as summer drew near. Camper numbers were above average, facilities had been upgraded, and the grounds were taking shape for a great summer of ministry. But we lacked summer missionaries. More and more people were looking for jobs where they would make a good amount of money. Each morning, the full-time missionaries and those who had already joined the team for the spring asked God to provide workers for the upcoming summer. There were many holes to be filled and it was becoming a bit stressful. One morning, someone prayed that God’s will be done and that He would provide the right number of people and the best people for the positions. At that point, more and more applications came in and interviews began. Not only was God providing needed summer missionaries, but He was assuring those He had called of His provision. arly in the year it became evident we could not, in good conscience, proceed with our federal government summer grant application. There were concerns about how our summer missionaries would fund their post secondary education without grants, so I challenged them to trust God. Right away, He gave me wisdom to see this as opportunity, not tragedy. For one team member, in her sixth summer at camp, it opened the door to a new position; her assistant to the director position wouldn’t have been possible had we relied on the proposed grant positions. Another team member planned to finish her online university degree and couldn’t work full-time hours, so we created a part-time position as supervisor and set the hours to suit her needs, rather than grant hours. Eight team members returned, despite having no guaranteed support. We also had part-time summer missionaries and volunteers. Leading up to summer, everyone on our team kept saying, “We got this!” That expression became central in our approach to ministry, reassuring us that with God’s enabling we could do what He’d called us to do. We were really short-staffed and had to work harder than ever, but got the work done, often in record time. We were blessed to draw closer to God because we did ministry in His strength, not ours. We saw lives changed in a deeper way— ours and the campers’. Summer missionaries were thrilled to lead many to the Lord and saw the eternal rewards of ministry in a new light. his summer we were reminded that, even though we relied on government summer grants in the past, we need to rely on God instead. After much prayer, we decided to take a leap of faith and share the camp’s financial need with supporters and church family. We were overwhelmed by the response. One family brought tears to my eyes when they showed up at our door with a donation for the camp. The father had given many of his teenage summers to being a camp counselor, and now their two boys attend every summer. The family had prayed about our financial need; not only did the parents donate, but the boys had set aside their allowances over time to thank the camp for its input into their lives. Because of families like this, our summer missionaries were able to share God’s love with over 380 campers. One girl who attended three weeks of camp came with zero knowledge of God. By her third week, she told her counselor she wanted to ask Jesus to be her personal Savior. “I feel like I heard God’s voice, and I am so excited,” she said. Blessings like these kept us going. Alicesâ€™ Story

His Mercies Are New Every Morning by Sandi Killeen, Program and Day Camp Manager, Hampton Bible Camp, NB

lice Fortin-Hamm was born in northern Manitoba to a French Canadian man and a First Nations woman. Following her father’s suicide and the collapse of her family structure, Alice lived at a home for children run by the Northern Canada Evangelical Mission (NCEM) in Montreal Lake, SK, from age seven and a half until she graduated from high school in 1968. Alice recalls that the NCEM staff would truck a group of children from Montreal Lake, to Carrot River, to Torch Trail Bible Camp—a journey of over four hours. “It was a very long ride in the back of an older truck on gravel roads, but our excitement bolstered us.” Sleeping on a straw tick mattress . . . watching heat lightning through cracks in the cabin roof . . . swimming for the first time in a real pool . . . having fun . . . absorbing kindness from caring counselors . . . being instructed in God’s Word under trees at the meadow’s edge—all became part of Alice’s camp memories. “The stories and life lessons were interesting and became part of my spiritual fiber,” she said. Alice attended Torch Trail Bible Camp four times, experiences which reinforced and augmented the Bible teaching she received in the NCEM home where she had accepted Christ as a child.

Alice attended Caronport High School (now Briercrest Christian Academy), a private school run in partnership with Briercrest Bible Institute (now Briercrest College and Seminary). She describes graduating from Caronport as being like “taking a tomato plant out of a hot house.” Outside that sheltered spiritual climate, her relationship with the Lord faltered. Alice said, while she regrets the time that could have been spent obeying and having fellowship with God, she has seen God offer endless mercy and faithfulness, and uncountable opportunities to correct life’s detours. Although she wandered from Him, He never lost His grip on her. In her fiftieth year, Alice visited her brother and sisterin-law, both Christians. As she sat outside drinking her morning coffee, the crisp air, bird sounds, and peaceful silence gave her the feeling of being at Bible camp. She went inside, opened her sister-in-law’s Bible, and read John 15:1-2: “I am the true vine, and My Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in Me that bears no fruit.” This convicted her and she re-dedicated her life to Jesus on her fiftieth birthday. Alice has seen God work through camp ministry in her life and in that of her grandson, who received Jesus at an overnight Bible camp last year. She has seen Proverbs 22:6 to be true: “Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old he will not depart from it.”

 KENOSEE LAKE BIBLE CAMP We celebrated the launch of our early years program and were blessed to have so many young families join our volunteer team this summer.

 LUSELAND BIBLE CAMP To God Be the Glory was our theme this season as we celebrated 85 years of ministry to youth and their families! Opening a new pool was a blessing to all!

 MADGE LAKE BIBLE CAMP This summer we had another tremendous season of ministry and growth. God was again faithful and we saw lives changed by the power of the Gospel. God really blessed us with good senior leadership, including many amazing volunteers who came with the right heart attitude. Praise the Lord!

 MANITOU LAKE BIBLE CAMP “I need to come to your office,” said a young camper. She arrived with her leader and another camper. They both shared how they had met Jesus that day and were going to follow Him!

 RANGER LAKE BIBLE CAMP Even though a gorgeous summer is behind us, we look forward to trying new activities with schools and youth groups this fall and winter! Skiing, tubing, and sitting around our new fireplace will be a blast.

Our Hearts T

his summer we participated in the Lord’s work of helping hurting people. On reserves north of us, we conducted an adult grief and loss camp, sharing the Gospel with those who seemed to have no hope. We also dealt with suicide. Whether in sessions on tough topics, sharing testimonies, or meeting for chapel, the theme always pointed to Christ and what He has done for us. We saw people returning to hopeless situations, but with the hope of Jesus Christ in their hearts. We heard of a man going home after camp and of his buddies coming over to party. He told them he does not live that way anymore. Such life changes are only due to the work of Christ. We dare not take credit—we just get amazing opportunities to be used by the Lord in His work. Learning from Both Sides

ne of my favorite things about Stoney Lake Bible Camp is seeing cabin leaders zero in on campers with truth that only the Gospel can deliver. One first-year cabin leader told me with unbridled excitement that her entire cabin of junior girls had put their trust in Jesus Christ. That kind of news helps remove the sting of everyday challenges. Yes, camping presents many challenges—some good, and others not so good. For example, there is no easy way to tell parents their child cannot attend camp next summer because of behavioral issues. There is no easy way to send a camper home in midweek because of self-harm threats. It is never easy to have conversations with a parent whose child is having a particularly difficult time with life. Sure, I love the easy and unchallenged life. Who doesn’t? But adversity builds strength and endurance. We may face difficult life lessons, but we should always be better after the challenges than when we first faced them.

He Exceeded My

Expectations I

t was early, much too early for this many registrations. Normally I would be thrilled, but as I watched them pour in, a feeling of dread started somewhere deep inside me. All four girls’ cabins were booked with campers excited to come, with more on the waiting list. But I had only one team member to lead them and no idea where to look for more. I felt we had filled these cabins by faith, had done everything we knew to do, and had to leave the rest to God. That is what I told myself and, after a few more panicky moments, realized it was true because God had given me peace. As I waited, God brought together an amazing team in His time—a volunteer here, a phone call there, and on the day before camp, the final team member. What an amazing summer, watching the team working and playing with campers, seeing their eyes shine as they shared the amazement of God using them to lead others to Christ. God not only met our needs, but exceeded my expectations; through His power we affected many lives, not just for the summer, but for eternity. 'm sure seasoned camp directors have lots of stories like the one I want to share, but this is my first. In my five years at Camp des Îles, finances were never an issue, but 2018 was different. A long, cold winter, unexpected expenses, and a couple of rental cancellations had taken their toll. As we plowed through the final weeks before summer, we were definitely in financial straits. I've always wanted to grow in faith and watch God work, but somehow it was easier to read George Mueller stories than live them. I'd talked with our treasurer (with a brave face, of course), but inside was a gnawing worry: What happens when we can't purchase food for a week of camp? As I gave these worries to God, His assurance filled me. And sure enough, upon opening my email several hours later, I saw a message from a church wanting to know our financial situation. This church, though involved with our ministry, was not a regular financial contributor to the camp. They sent another message three days later stating they had not only decided to give us a substantial financial gift, but would also send an additional amount in weeks to come! Yes, God does exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think (Ephesians 3:21).

Atlantic Canada  BLOMIDON BIBLE CAMP (NS) It was exciting to watch the camp’s impact grow. Campers returned, bringing family and friends, and new summer missionaries were eager to be a part of our life-changing environment.  SANDY COVE BIBLE CAMP (NB) This summer we saw six known salvation decisions and great leaders for many spiritual conversations! Fall 2018 included guest groups, renovations, teaching Going Deep weekends, hosting three events, and reporting to local churches.  ANDREW AND TANYA DOREY (NB) It was a great summer of sharing God’s love in many small communities throughout the Maritimes. As a result, one church has restarted their Sunday school and has seen many new children attending. We have also been coming alongside camps, churches, and Christian schools, helping them understand how to be more effective in working with autistic and behaviorally challenged children.  CAPE BRETON BIBLE CAMP (NS) This year’s highlight? The salvation of two summer missionaries! Our teen camp speaker taught the difference between true and false conversion, and two young men, who had grown up in the church and knew the truth of the Gospel, realized they had no real, living relationship with Christ. They surrendered their lives to the Lord and were changed.  HAMPTON BIBLE CAMP (NB) We had another amazing year of growth in overnight and day camps. In September, we began preparations for a building expansion, which includes office space, day camp space, kitchen storage, and much-needed replacements of our walk-in freezer and cooler units.  MIRAMICHI VALLEY BIBLE CAMP (NB) Jesus didn’t mean for Christianity to be boring. MVBC is growing into a great place for campers and summer missionaries to start and grow in this meaningful life.

Ye Shall Know Them

all caps are a popular way to show our affiliations or to advertize what we want people to know about us. I sometimes wear a cap with one of our camp logos on it or one that just says Canada. While shopping, I noticed a man, several years my senior, with a cap that said, First Infantry Division, Korean Conflict 1950–53. My asking about it provided an opportunity to share Christ. Before parting, I asked if I could pray with him. I prayed the way of salvation, with the hope he would understand his need of Christ. Although the day approaches when I will retire from the official capacity of missionary, I know my tour of duty won’t end until I’m called into the Lord’s presence. One challenge for we retirees is wondering what was really accomplished for the kingdom of God over those many years. Like the man who fought in a war that has yet to officially end, we soldiers of the King are in a never-ending war. While eternity will reveal many victories and some defeats, we can take comfort in Paul’s words to the Corinthians, “Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong” (1 Corinthians 16:13 NKJV). Incidentally, I don’t plan to buy a hat with Retired on it.

n the last night of teen camp, many of our 24 campers shared from their hearts around the campfire. One testimony influenced everyone. “Jeremy” said his life was ordinary and boring. The truth is, none of these teens are average or boring. We have known most of them since they were very young, and they have been the source of our greatest ministry joys. They have worked alongside us, teaching younger day campers the daily Bible verse, leading songs, and even telling the missionary story. They kept the camp running last summer when my wife’s father died. Through them, the Lord has encouraged us to keep going. These young volunteers are challenged to do things they never thought they could, and are now involved in children’s ministry in their churches. One volunteer loves camp so much she wants to be the next camp director when Lori and I retire. This summer, when she purchased a new phone and case, she had the case personalized with the camp summer missionary logo, and added Director in Training. NEW FOUND LIFE BIBLE CAMP

recently had the privilege of teaching Romans to a second year Bible college class. In it, Paul paints a picture of the world’s desperate state, where God has clearly revealed Himself through creation but we have chosen to ignore God, the Creator of everything. We prefer worshipping ourselves and other created things. Because of people’s ignorance and resistance towards Him, God gives them over to their desires, which results in idolatry, immorality, and reprobate minds incapable of thinking logically in the spiritual realm. In many ways, this description in Romans 1 is an accurate portrayal of our Canadian context. What hope do we have? What is the answer to this downward trajectory? Is it an absolutely hopeless situation or is there a silver lining somewhere? The answer is clear. There is more than a silver lining—there is a marvellous hope for the world, for our nation. The answer is in Jesus and His Gospel, the whole point of Romans. Though we find ourselves in a desperate state, Paul reminds us that the Gospel is the power of God for salvation to all who put their faith in Jesus alone. For those who are made new by the Spirit of Jesus, all condemnation is removed. What great news. What great hope. What a stunning message. This Gospel, the message of Jesus and His redemptive work on the cross, is the message we gladly, eagerly, and boldly share. It is the one hope for Canada!
