n December the federal government announced that applicants applying for Canada Summer Jobs Grant funding must attest that both the job and organization’s core mandate respect individual human rights in Canada, including the values underlying the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and other “rights”, including the Liberal government’s position on reproduction and sexuality. This newly added attestation—a series of four statements applicants had to agree with—was confusing and left unanswered questions among non-profits and charities across Canada, including 40 One Hope Canada ministry points that rely on these grants to hire key positions such as lifeguards and summer program directors. Jesus’ words to be “as wise as serpents and as innocent as doves” guide our response as we courageously share the Gospel with our country that at times appears hostile to what we believe. Jesus tells us to be wise, so we can avoid the snares before for us, and innocent, so we can move ahead with integrity.

• We rely on the body of Christ—from Christian lawyers to believers serving as members of parliament to other ministries such as the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada and the Canadian Council of Christian Charities— to discern the best way forward. • We remain completely confident in the Bible—and say with humble confidence, this is who we are, this is what we believe, and we will not change. Even if that means losing hundreds of thousands of dollars in funding and seeing over a 100 summer positions impacted. • We move forward—many of our ministry points applied for the summer jobs grant and included a letter from the One Hope Canada Ministry Resource Centre, stating how we interpret the government’s attestation in a way that is consistent with our country’s Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms AND remain true to our unchanging beliefs.

To present and promote the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ primarily to the otherwise unreached in Canada and elsewhere so the lost can be evangelized and that Christian believers are taught and strengthened in the faith. OUR CURRENT PURPOSE STATEMENT

We present the Gospel, particularly to those having the least opportunity to hear of Christ and especially to children and youth, and we disciple believers for living and serving through His Church.

As stewards of One Hope Canada, the National Board is committed to ensure that the founding purpose of this Mission remains its focus for years to come. Yes, history is full of examples of organizations drifting from their original purpose, so we remain vigilant. Though the future will undoubtedly bring challenges, some of which we are already experiencing, our commitment to our founding purpose remains unchanged.

The Winter/Spring 2017 Issue 13 had the cover picture of Henry Schellenberg's truck at Gimli Bible Camp. My dad, Peter Krahn, memorized 500 verses and was picked up in this vehicle and taken from the Altona area to Gimli for the free week of camp. This was one of the most important factors in Dad's spiritual beginning and his life pilgrimage. He farmed in Ontario, served in our local church and with the Gideons, and owned the Bible book shop in Winkler for many years. At 97, Dad is still keen minded, in long term care in Altona. The magazine brought back many memories and he has enjoyed giving this issue of your magazine to visiting family. Thank you for your ongoing ministry. You have blessed our family and impacted our lives with the Gospel and the love of Jesus.

We received the Canada's Hope Summer/Fall 2017 issue and read it with interest. We praise God for all the people who were at your many camps throughout Canada. Back in the late thirties and early forties, we had CSSM daily vacation Bible school teachers who came to teach about Jesus in northern Saskatchewan. One of the highlights of my summers was DVBS. The Canadian Sunday School Mission [now One Hope Canada] sent workers to schools in the community. They arrived before school dismissed for the summer to advertise DVBS. We always anticipated their visit during exam week. Part of the excitement for me was that since we lived close to the school, the DVBS teachers usually stayed at our place for meals and the night. The workers I remember are Tina Bargen, Henry Ginter, Charles Gurton, Arthur Powell, and Jim Vaus. It was through Jim’s teaching and his dynamic series on Paul that I became a believer. I clearly remember when he invited us to accept Jesus and I did so, kneeling at a desk in my school. These workers also taught us the books of the Bible to a tune I still remember.

It is always a marvel to look back and see how God led in bringing people to Himself. At the age of six I was saved through the Gospel message at a VBS in a rural church in northern Ontario. I understood little of my position in Christ until the age of 14 when I went to Galilean Bible Camp for a summer teen weekend. Our parents, though as poor as can be, sent the three youngest of us; I came home from that valuable camping experience and before I went to sleep that first night, alone with God, gained assurance of my salvation. I realized clearly that salvation could not be attained by my good works, but only through the grace of our Lord Jesus (Ephesians 2:8-9). My two sisters who had accompanied me to camp were also impacted greatly by God’s love. It is so thrilling to look back and see how they matured in their faith. One served as a pastor’s wife in Canada and the other as a Bible translator with her husband in a remote south Pacific island.

God used One Hope Canada to influence all my older six siblings for Christ and each went on to serve Him. The Mission was also there to encourage my mother in her wavering faith. She had been a nominal believer for years but through the ministry of One Hope Canada and Back to the Bible broadcasts, she grew in her Christian walk. Gradually, the Lord impressed His love on my dad’s heart and, in his mid-fifties, he understood his need of personal salvation. His radically changed heart no longer opposed the Gospel. I thank the Lord for Galilean Bible Camp and the impact a One Hope Canada missionary had on my life and that of my family.  CAMP AMASA A new camper wrote in his online newsletter: "I believe in everything the camp stands for. Thank you Camp Amasa, for putting on this camp . . . and for everything you do.”  LAKE OF THE TREES BIBLE CAMP God helped us reopen after a wildfire evacuation forced a four week shutdown in July. The campers who could come in August were blessed. We welcome prayers for losses and our insurance claim.  MAPLE SPRINGS BIBLE CAMP This year we received an awesome playground and camp van for activities and outreach! Mostly, we are thankful for how God connects us as a camp family! Pray for our kids and families who are hurting and need love.  NESS LAKE BIBLE CAMP What a privilege to have a hand in God’s ministry to Prince George this fall! Dependence

n the summer of 1995, I had my first experience of Canadian camp ministry. Fresh out of a year of Bible school, I was invited to speak at a teen camp. This was a daunting challenge because I had never done anything like this before. While in Bible school, there had been a strong emphasis on Jesus being the center of the Gospel, not only for salvation, but for daily living, kingdom serving, and everything else. Expressions such as “God is not as concerned with our ability as with our availability”, and “The Gospel is not our responsibility, but our response to His ability” rang in my ears. Armed with that head knowledge, and hoping it to be true, I stepped into the adventure. My dependence on His ability became a desperate dependence as the time came closer to speaking. I didn’t feel prepared, my thoughts were fuzzy. I felt nauseous and wanted to run away. But God seemed to whisper, “Trust Me. I called you to this. It is not about you, but My glory. I want to use you!” In that first session, I experienced a miracle, one that repeated itself every day. God gave me things to say and His passion in saying them. I still felt weak and desperately dependent, but from there on, Jesus came alive in me. Twenty-two years later, and having been a camp director for 16 summers, some things remain the same. Camp ministry is way too big, I am way too small, but God continues to whisper, “Trust Me, I called you to this. It is not about you, but I want to use you for My glory.” The result? Jesus comes alive through our ministries.

amp ministry taught me the lesson of being desperately dependent on God in new and powerful ways. This summer, two days into staff training, we lost our head cook. Stressful! We knew God had the big picture in mind, but we were being challenged to trust Him in a deeper way. My wife, Lyn, stepped into managing food services and guided the cooks and staff who came each week. God sent numerous faithful people from Tennessee and, from just down the road! One lady said she needed to call to see if we needed kitchen help. The moments of people stepping up are humbling, and accurately pointed to our utter dependence on God who provides in His time and in His way. One night, a camper experienced such profound spiritual oppression it haunted and intimidated fellow campers and staff. We knew we were helpless in our strength to overcome what was happening, but we also knew the authority in the name of Jesus Christ. God challenged us to pray without fear; the change was immediate and palpable. God’s intervention in this camper’s life was tangible, and profoundly impacted those who witnessed it. God taught us that, though we may know our dependence on Him, sometimes He asks us to walk by faith in that reality.

Alberta  DAVID THOMPSON BIBLE CAMP Over 30 campers came to faith in Christ this summer despite threats and abuses from some homes (siblings included). So cool!  JOY CHAPEL Last summer’s Gospel treasure theme, Christmas thank yous for our teaching, and a spontaneous, “I’m staying on Jesus’ path”, reveal Christ is indeed the treasure folks at Joy Chapel are seeking.  LITTLE SMOKY COUNTRY CHAPEL We had good turnouts, including many unsaved people, for all our Christmas meetings. The community centre president expressed thanks to everyone who put on the excellent Christmas concert.  NORDEGG COMMUNITY CHURCH With the help of three other churches, over 70 children on the Big Horn Reserve received a Christmas gift box. We had about 100 people come to the church potluck to end the annual Nordegg Days. Our monthly community movie night is a good time for the community to get together. Proceeds go to the Nordegg Public Library.  ROSS HAVEN BIBLE CAMP We are racing to get our new website running with our new registration portal. Campers and staff are eager to register. A few bugs to iron out yet. Stay tuned!

Simple Acts of Love

ur junior high camp program gives campers the opportunity to go mountain biking on trails in the adjacent Pigeon Lake Provincial Park. The trails offer engaging rides for most skill levels. Mountain biking is often the highlight of each camper’s week. This summer we had a camper who had never ridden a bike. His cabin leader, aided by the camp speaker and a few others, took time throughout the week to teach this young man. These staff members were often seen running beside the bike, keeping him balanced as he practiced. The cooks, watching from a kitchen window, commented excitedly on his progress. What a wonderful thing to see how impactful the teaching and personal investment were in this boy’s life. The camper’s mom was deeply moved when she heard what happened and expressed profound gratitude that her son was flourishing in our camp family. She later shared a video of him riding a bike in their hometown saying, "He wanted to ride a mountain bike because of your empathy, compassion, patience, and willingness to help." One of the beautiful things about camp is this kind of opportunity to build community and relationships through simple acts of love. live in West Monroe, Louisiana, and in the fall of 2016, God placed it on my heart to serve with one of my best friends at Camp Silversides. Never did I dream I would spend a summer in Canada, but it appears God’s intentions and plans for me are not anything I can dream. When I met my friend in college, she told me about a Bible camp and its impact on her life. I had no idea that two years later I would completely understand and share her love for Camp Silversides. I can think of no greater phrase to summarize my time on staff at Camp Silversides than He is good! God revealed and demonstrated His goodness and love throughout each camp session, with each child, in the words of the speakers, and through the servant-hearted staff. I made eternal bonds with staff members, genuine believers who I know I will see in heaven. I saw families and campers worship Jesus boldly and freely. I witnessed many beautiful and precious salvation experiences in which young children and adults declared Jesus as Savior and Lord. God granted a tremendous number of opportunities for the Gospel to be shared throughout each day, and His hand was evidently working on each soul that walked into the camp. There are no words to fully describe seeing the light in a camper’s eyes as they realize how much Jesus truly loves them and how desperately they need Him. I will be forever grateful for the role I played in presenting the Lord’s truth at Camp Silversides. I joined the staff, hoping to be a vessel for the Lord and a laborer in His harvest, and through it all, experienced the true joy of being part of the family of God.

Three values were discerned as core to One Hope Canada and were adopted by the National Board on June 6, 2017. One Hope Canada’s core values are not promotional slogans; rather, they define the Mission’s individuality, how we behave as we fulfill the Mission’s purpose every day. That is why our core values will continue to shape how we do ministry. Without doubt, they are hills to die on.

THE IMPACT OF ONE HOPE CANADA’S CORE VALUES

One Hope Canada’s core values bring freedom. Knowing clearly who we are as a Mission frees and empowers us to make decisions with integrity. Our core values give freedom to supporters and constituents, to hold the Mission accountable in its decisions. One Hope Canada’s core values bring clarity. With a few words we communicate who we are and what is unique about the character of One Hope Canada. These three values describe the culmination of over 90 years of the Holy Spirit’s creative work in the life of One Hope Canada.

Core Values We are desperately dependent on God. We accomplish nothing of eternal worth apart from God’s Spirit empowering us, and we practice this dependence upon God by being Christ centered and Gospel focused. (John 15:5, Romans 1:16)

We are completely confident in the Bible. The Bible is our final authority in all matters of faith and practice.

One Hope Canada’s core values bring responsibility. If core values are hills to die on, we are duty-bound to ensure the Mission continues to live by them. The challenges against our values will not only be from without—a culture that undermines biblical standards—but also from within, within our hearts, which, if left unchecked, will drift toward selfsufficiency and independence. That is why the Gospel must remain at the heart of One Hope Canada, for none of us ever outgrows the need for the life-transforming truth of what Jesus has done and continues to do.

Manitoba  ADVENTURE DAY CAMP In March, ADC partners with Roseau River Bible Camp’s year round discipleship students to host a spring break day camp! Praise God for unity and partnership between camps!  GIMLI BIBLE CAMP Alongside our ongoing follow-up events in Winnipeg, we have four discipleship retreats this winter for campers who made a decision to follow Christ but are not in a church. The opportunity to encourage the children in their faith is priceless.  ROSEAU RIVER BIBLE CAMP We continue to ask God to provide and He does. Over the past four months, we have seen much ministry in the lives of those connected to the camp. Our year round discipleship program participants continue to learn and grow each day. Winter camps are growing, personal support for our missionaries continues to come in, and the Cyprus Lodge project moves forward. We praise Him for all this!  TURTLE MOUNTAIN BIBLE CAMP Join us in celebrating our faith journey as God’s miraculous story unfolds, as He replenishes the cruse of oil, bringing our new facility closer to being operational. Donations for kitchen equipment, our many volunteers, the free delivery of drywall, use of lifts and machines, discounts on insulation, and an offer to build counters and cabinets at cost, are some of the many answers to prayer. We anticipate TMBC continuing to be a conduit for spreading the life-transforming message of Christ to campers of all ages.

Gifts of

the Spirit

f all the events that took place this summer, one stands out in our minds. During the first teen camp, our speaker was talking a lot about identity in Christ and gifts of the Spirit. Two younger campers, “Josh” and “Tim”, really took to heart what was being said. All week, many campers were learning things about the Bible they had not heard before; Josh had taken an interest in the gifts of the Spirit, particularly in healing. Near the end of the week, after a chapel, Josh asked many questions. He had just accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior and wanted to know how long he had to be filled with the Spirit to pray over someone for healing. I said that through him, Jesus could heal someone immediately. Josh was excited to hear this and ran to his cabin. Later that night, Josh told me his friend Tim had hurt his knee so badly he could not have participated in their cabin’s late night activity. Josh eagerly told me how he had prayed over Tim’s knee and that the pain disappeared. What a life-changing moment for them as they realized the Bible is true and that Jesus still heals today!

Our Perspective-

changing Gospel

f there is one thing I've learned while being in full-time ministry as a young family it’s this: the Gospel is relevant. I know this is true. You don’t need to be a mother or involved in full-time ministry to accept this simple truth but, if I were to sum up our last five years in ministry and three-plus years of being parents, it would be with these simple words: we need the Gospel. I need the unchanging hope of the Gospel as I go about the mundane tasks of being a mom; our kids need the Gospel as they grow daily and begin to develop opinions and personalities; our marriage needs the Gospel as together we navigate life, the busyness of parenting, full‑time ministry, and our growth as a couple. Often, this past summer, my attitude and heart needed a perspective change. I would look at our circumstances and think: “Woe is me. Being a mom is hard. Being a mom during a busy summer of camp is hard.” As I was reminded of the Gospel, of how much was sacrificed for me, for our children, and for every child in camp, my perspective changed. Seeing first hand the transforming power of the Gospel in campers, staff, and volunteers, changed my perspective. Just listening to the powerful testimonies of God’s goodness and the power of His Word during staff meetings was enough to change my perspective. As I tucked our children into bed and reminded them why Daddy wasn’t home and what he was doing, my perspective changed. My perspective shifted from me to the Cross; how I needed that! It is why we do what we do. It is why we persevere. It is why we (try to) focus our hearts and minds on the Gospel. We have a perspective-changing Gospel that transforms lives and furthers God’s kingdom. What a privilege to be a part of His work.

Knight Ministries BIBLE CLUBS

 GALILEAN BIBLE CAMP What a privilege for Galilean Bible Camp to celebrate 65 years of ministry. How special to look back on the thousands of ways God has used Galilean to touch the lives and hearts of so many.  MONARCH BIBLE CAMP This summer we had a special reminder that all things are in God’s hands and in His timing. A camper had come to camp for several years, but this year was her time to become a Christian. It was the first time for her cabin counsellor to lead a child to the Lord, so that was special for her. Her cabin mates were impacted by this display of faith and trust. ne day at a Bible camp, we observed a girl running around the corner of the chapel. She fell on her knees, weeping uncontrollably. Just as Bob went to see if she was alright and began talking to her, a group of girls, who had chased and taunted her to tears, came around the corner of the chapel. She was one of the sponsored kids sent to camp that week. When the girls saw Bob talking to her, they ran away. Bob shared with the girl how special she was in God’s eyes, about heaven, and God’s plan for her life. There was a giant cross on the chapel wall: Christ was being shared at the foot of the cross. When we think of One Hope Canada’s core values, we can't help but think of the opportunities we have to share the Gospel, be it at summer Bible camps, school Bible clubs, in prisons, on mission trips, or in churches. There is a world out there to be reached through the opportunities presented by One Hope Canada ministries.

KNIGHT MINISTRIES BIBLE CLUBS • The Knights’ ministry takes

 HOPEYOUTH has been reaching out to the youth of the Wikwemikong Reserve on Manitoulin Island for seven years. One Hope Canada worked this year with HOPEyouth in transitioning from being primarily a youth ministry into a church plant. We are thrilled that this process, which began almost a year ago, is becoming a reality. The Sunday night Bible study meetings are now held at an off-reserve school. Adults and former youth members who could not previously participate are joining the youth at the REALhope church plant meetings. On January 1, 2018, One Hope Canada released Pete and April VanVolkingburgh and the ministry of HOPEyouth to C2C, a church planting/ training ministry under the Canadian Conference of Mennonite Churches. Confident the ministry will continue to thrive under their capable leadership, we are following the new HOPEyouth and the REALhope church plant with our prayers and invite you to do the same.

Our ever present help

squirrel hurried out of my way and when safe, peeked out at me. I extended my hand, pretending to have a treat. The little animal emerged from its hiding place, revealing a desire to trust me. Cautiously, it moved closer, but doubt kicked in and away it darted. I abandoned that developing relationship, for if I had something to give and had regular input into its life, it may have started looking for me, depending on me, and losing its fear. This encounter made me reflect on Candy, whose arms bore the scars of cutting, a lovely young girl whose weight reflected comfort eating. For her, it was a struggle to engage, to connect with others, so our team, filled with compassion, worked to encourage her. Unlike my brief encounter with the squirrel, we did have something to contribute to Candy’s life. We believe that through us, she is learning to depend on others and lose the fears that dominated her for too long. She showed interest during chapel and requested a free Bible and I invited her to attend the following camp. I was quite pleased she accepted, and we were surprised when a joyful girl greeted us the following week. I have been her camp mom for three summers and sometimes in between. We prayed together through her parents’ nasty divorce and she continues to feel stuck in the middle as each parent uses her as leverage. As she navigated these changes, she transformed into a teen and started high school. For her many worries, I can provide a listening ear and timely hugs, but my most significant role in Candy’s life is leading her to be desperately dependent on Christ, our ever present help in time of trouble. ENGAGE 2017

s part of One Hope Canada’s leadership team, Joanne and I arrived at the Delta Ocean Point Hotel a couple of days before the beginning of the 2017 personnel conference. From our hotel window, we enjoyed a panoramic view of downtown Victoria and its inner harbor. What a view! Seeing tugboats, ferries, seaplanes, yachts, fishing boats, seagulls, and seals, we knew we were not in snowy Alberta. That is but a small part of what the personnel conference was all about: to come away for a time, to reflect on God’s goodness and provision, to rejoice in being part of a really cool mission—One Hope Canada. The theme of the personnel conference was ENGAGE. And engage we did. It was wonderful to have the entire leadership team in one place to plan the conference’s final details. We wore blue ENGAGE 2017 T-shirts for November 6, missionary arrival day. What an awesome day that turned out to be! Joanne and I proudly wore our T-shirts and greeted each Alberta missionary. It was a day of greeting, hugging, going out to lunch or supper, and visiting. The same thing happened with other field directors and their regions. The genuine love for one another and the excitement of being together

continued throughout the conference to such an extent that the Delta hotel staff noticed our genuine caring and expressed their enjoyment of hosting us. They would love to have One Hope Canada back! What the hotel staff saw was Christ’s love through us as missionaries. May God continue to draw the hotel staff to an understanding of who He is! In our plenary sessions, 200-plus missionaries were in one conference room. It was not just a sea of people but a huge gathering of those who love the Gospel and are dedicated to sharing it across the nation. As missionaries, we often serve in isolation and, over time, the idea that we are few in number gets stronger. Yet, to sit in that room with so many who live in a similar environment was such an encouragement. How good to know we are not alone in this great endeavor. How good to know we are part of something much bigger. This is one reason why One Hope Canada holds this conference every five years. I wish it could be more often. The personnel conference is a tremendously valuable opportunity to network. Having face-to-face discussions is far more effective than what can be done by phone, email, Skype, or Facebook. What an opportunity to

get input from missionaries outside our home region. What an opportunity to build relationships and make friends. What an opportunity to renew relationships. For example, I had good visits with at least threequarters of those who attended. Some made a point of meeting everyone! And yes, it was an opportunity to learn new jokes: What do you call a Jamaican sprinter who is not fast? (Answer: Pokemon) We also came together to learn. By divine appointment, we were taught by Lawrence Jensen. Lawrence pastors a rural church in Alberta and often speaks at camps. He walks daily with the Lord and has been gifted by God to effectively deliver His message. I will not forget his oft-repeated statement, sound doctrine leads to good deeds. This may not sound too exciting but, as he explained the meaning, it can change everything. For example, when I think of Jesus dying on the cross and I just leave Him there, it affects how I make life choices. It’s all about me me me. “Yes! Jesus died for me. Now I get to go to heaven.” That, said Pastor Jensen, is incomplete doctrine. However, if I think of Jesus as resurrected and alive, I get to be with Him every day and every hour. I get to know Jesus and what pleases Him, what He wants me to do. I am not waiting to meet Jesus one day, because I already meet with Him every day. I am alive and others, hotel employees included, notice. Kingdom purposes are achieved. This is sound doctrine. A highlight all missionaries will remember fondly was recognizing terms of service. Service pins were given to those who have been with One Hope Canada for 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, and even 40-plus years. We enthusiastically applauded each category and when it came to those serving the longest, there was a heartfelt standing ovation. After five days, the conference ended all too soon. For me, there was the extra sense that God was smiling on all of us. I sensed He was saying, “Well done, One Hope Canada missionaries. Keep up the good work I have called you to.” I felt His glow descending on us. I trust that glow lingers until the next personnel conference. I know the glow from the 2012 Quebec City personnel conference lasted all the way to Victoria! I say thank you to those behind the scenes who planned and worked on this conference for so long. I thank our faithful prayer warriors and extend a special thank you to donors who allowed this conference to be debt free. God blessed us through you.

The play, put on by volunteers from the summer staff, is an awesome opportunity for our leaders to be encouraged in their faith and build relationships with the summer staff. We are so excited to have received over $27,000 in donations at this event. MLBC is blessed to have such amazing support from our surrounding communities.

hen most kids think about camp, they envision sleeping in cabins, nervously sneaking through the woods during a night game, shooting their first arrow at a target, and swimming in the camp lake or pool. Knowing how important water activities are to camp life made a conversation last spring so disappointing when I was told winter damage to our pool was unrepairable. Our swimming program would have to shift to the lake. If our camp were located on a British Columbia or northern Ontario lake, that wouldn’t be much of a problem, but in southern Saskatchewan, lakes have the tendency to form an overgrowth of algae each August. As the news of our failed pool set in, my thoughts and prayers centered on our lake, wondering how to sell my staff on the idea that swimming in all that algae would be fun. Fast forward to late summer as I chatted with a local man at the gas station overlooking the lake. “In all my years of living in Kenosee,” he said, “I’ve never seen a summer when the lake stayed so clear for so long.” I smiled to myself and said a prayer of thanks to our Lord because, while we didn’t have a pool to swim in, the Lord did give us a clear lake to enjoy. Another reminder that we truly are desperately dependent on our Lord for all things.

major economic slowdown over the past couple of years had taken its toll. As our year end approached, we were short on funds, without much hope of seeing things change. We had experienced an amazing season of growth, both in attendance and in developing our vision to make disciples and yet, there we were, looking at troubling financial numbers. As part of our growth as a ministry, we had done some teamwork development and had re-committed to daily prayer times in our office. We wanted to recognize our dependence on God for all things. In spite of the great year and steps forward, we still faced the question of bleak finances. What was God’s plan to provide? It was right down to two weeks before year end and I received a phone call: “I have a donation to drop off. Are you in the office?” Then another call just like it, then the mail brought some surprisingly generous and unexpected gifts, then a conversation and a cheque with a very large donation. When the dust settled, because of God’s gracious provision, we were caught up on our bills and had enough left over to make an amazing start for the new year! How could we help but praise God? have two questions for you: can I call my worker, and how do you know if you’re in love?” This was twelve-year-old Carla’s second week at our camp; my wife, Jessica, and I spoke with her regularly at meal times in our dining hall. Of the over 900 campers who come to our summer camps each year, we are always amazed at how many do not have a supportive family structure to return to after their time at camp. Carla didn’t know her father, her mom was in recovery for substance abuse, and it seemed like she had no adults to ask about life’s important questions. We spent the next hour with Carla, answering questions and praying together. This girl had a clear need of family. During our first summer at Ranger Lake in 2001, Jessica and I were taken aback by the camaraderie among the staff. Despite differences in hometowns, economic means, and ages, these teens and twenty-somethings accepted each other as family; this acceptance spread to the campers. Their consistently welcoming atmosphere was instrumental in our deciding in 2006 to work with the camp full time. While it is not a replacement for family, the camp’s accepting community is often the closest caring group many children will experience. It is common to see teary-eyed kids on the last day of camp. They will miss being part of a faith community! After camp ended, Carla made a connection at a local church where she is involved in the music program. We are grateful she is part of the global Church and is experiencing life in the family of God!

When Things Don’t Go

as Planned

amp work is nothing without the prayers of supporting saints. “Judy” was a 12-year-old camper this year. Her cabin leader and a few others were sick so we substituted leaders throughout most of the week. We prayed for the sick cabin leaders, for leadership to manage the situation wisely, and for my 16-year-old daughter, Meagan, who did double or triple duty most of the week. We also were prayed for by family and friends and prayer groups that love this ministry. Throughout all the chaos that was our focus, Judy connected with the message of the Gospel. She did not see what we were coping with; instead, God captivated her through His message and Meagan’s love. At the end of the week, we were filled with joy that the Lord answered so many prayers as the scripture has promised! Judy left camp seriously considering surrendering to Him, absolutely convinced that we loved her, that Meagan loved her, and that camp was a safe place. I am so grateful, as a dad, that Meagan had this experience of relying on God. I am also grateful that through prayer, we can face many challenges and difficulties and not abandon focus or hope that God’s work is getting done. “Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many” (2 Corinthians 1:11).

We are so thankful for individual believers who gather each week for fellowship, prayer, and the study of God’s Word. A highlight? Our fellowship dinner and Lord’s supper with our home church group just before Christmas.

 STANSTEAD COMMUNITY OUTREACH A highlight for us is the community Bible study, now in its third year. Recently, we had a young couple and a single man take interest in our study. The Bible study group has become a kind of home church for three or four participants, and we realize a huge responsibility to be Spirit-led in shepherding this small body of believers!

Atlantic Canada  CAPE BRETON BIBLE CAMP (NS) The highlight of the new year at CBBC was an event held at a school we rented in Sydney. There were not as many kids as we had hoped for, but the day was lots of fun with games, food, prizes, and a strong Gospel message. I believe it had a good spiritual impact on the children.  CHARLOTTE COUNTY COMMUNITY MINISTRIES (NB) When we were speaking at Hampton Bible Camp last summer, I took a stroll to the corral and since they were short on walkers I had the privilege of leading the horses as the children tried out their riding skills. I soon realized that "crocs" weren't ideal footwear around horses; the next day I put on my steel toed boots. It was a joy to help the campers enjoy a new experience. My wife and I were also blessed to introduce them to who Jesus is in chapel.  DOREY FAMILY (NB) This year is our 10th annual Easter egg hunt, and we are planning on it being our largest ever. What a great opportunity to reach our community and share the Gospel! We are planning a busy summer of traveling Atlantic Canada to hold VBS in many communities.  HAMPTON BIBLE CAMP (NB) HBC is excited to offer March Break Day Camp, as well as a new summer program which includes laser tag. Praise God for the ability to reach children in new ways!  NEWFOUND LIFE BIBLE CAMP (NL) The story of our Savior's birth was presented in seven public schools to 2,224 students and teachers. What a precious opportunity to share with some who had never heard and others who were full of questions. Praise God!  MIRAMICHI VALLEY BIBLE CAMP (NB) This fall/winter has been met with many bumps in the road, but our passion and purpose drive us to trust God to accomplish what He will with this camp for His glory.

God’s Word— Exciting and Life Changing

olly had to be creative to find a solution for an unusual complaint about chapel from the 8 to 10-year-old girls in her cabin. The speaker gave many verses to support the truths he was teaching and they couldn’t find the references quickly enough. When Holly started a cabin Bible study during free time, the girls would grab their Bibles and pile on the floor to search for the verses from the morning session. This prepared them for chapel and they were excited and ready to learn fascinating new truths. Amy, a cabin leader, had great confidence in the power of God’s Word. It was a confidence that came from the dramatic and ongoing change it was working in her life. She was pumped to be a good cabin leader and worked hard to find creative ways to connect with her campers during cabin devotions. She encouraged everyone to sit on the top bunks, then on the floor, or under a tent they made. Each night she connected deeper as she shared her story and skillfully created a safe place for the girls to open up and allow God’s truth to speak into their lives. During a special devotion time on the trampoline on the last night of camp, God’s Word broke through. Girls’ fears were alleviated, broken hearts were affirmed, and one deeply wounded twelve year old was wonderfully saved. The next day Amy joyfully grabbed pen, paper, and her young friend’s Bible and together they prepared her mind with truths that would show her how to live in freedom!

he sense of family at camp provides real-life opportunities to show God’s love. What does it look like? Continue reading for examples from our 2017 summer ministry. Valerie was anxious most of the time. A believer from a solid Christian home, she knew all the truths, but needed someone to listen to her hurting story of feeling inadequate and left out. Through prayer with a co-worker, she saw God’s truths applied to her. Lucas prayed for God to forgive his sins. The leader pursued the opportunity to explain salvation yet again to him and Lucas got it this time. “I feel so clean! God is awesome!” Deanie reflects after each chapel on what was taught. Something clicks: God is real for her needs and the Bible has real answers. She opens up to a leader who listens to her struggles. “I have difficulty reading the Bible. Nothing sticks.” She wants to be more personal with God, so they pray together from the heart, not out of duty. Matt told many lies about being treated badly at home. He needed intervention. A leader prayed with him and shared scripture for him to focus on. He needed to clarify who he is before God—a child of God, loved by God, secured by God—so he could be honest with God and grow. At our Active Agers camp (aged 60 plus), it was obvious the camp speaker really cared for those in his audience. This caused two ladies to talk privately with him and his wife. After a few questions, they trusted in Christ for salvation. We are so thankful God used His Word and servants to be catalysts in each of these lives and so many more across the country. Thank you for your ministry in prayer for the follow up that continues to encourage each one in the faith.

TERRY KERR, Saskatchewan Field/Lead Field Director

Bonnie and I became involved in camp ministry in the mid 90s as volunteers for Kenosee Lake Bible Camp in southeast Saskatchewan. After a few years, I joined the camp board, eventually becoming the board chair. In 2011, I started full-time as the Saskatchewan field director for One Hope Canada. Before joining the mission full-time I worked four years for a major oil company and 17 years before that as a police officer. Married for 31 years, we have three children, two of whom are married. Bonnie works with special needs children in the public school system and travels with me during the summer, playing a major role in our ministry.

CAROLE RICHARD MURPHY, Quebec Field Director

Carole has been involved in One Hope Canada (CSSM) since she was seven. From being a camper, to kitchen helper, to cabin leader, she has experienced most aspects of camp ministry. She served on the board of Camp Livingstone and the National Board for four years before joining the mission full time. She has worked with her husband Brian, the director of Camp Livingstone, since June 2006.

PETE STENSTROM, British Columbia/Alberta Field Director

Pete spent the past four summers as director at Cape Breton Bible Camp, a One Hope Canada ministry on the southeast coast of Nova Scotia. He grew to appreciate the value of camp ministry. Before heading east from Alberta, Pete had a background in recreation administration and was the community services and recreation director for the Town of Rimbey, AB. Other ministry experience prior to One Hope Canada includes an eight month assignment with Africa Inland Mission in Kenya at Rift Valley Academy. Pete is no stranger to the British Columbia and Alberta forests as he spent nine years forest fire fighting and seven years tree planting.

STEPHEN JOHNSON, Manitoba/Ontario Field Director

After graduating from Ontario Bible College with a bachelor of theology in pastoral ministry, Stephen spent 13 years in business, 10 years as a lead solo pastor, ordained with the Fellowship of Evangelical Baptist Churches, and five years as a director with Focus on the Family Canada. Stephen and Beverly, married for 38 years, have four adult children and three grandchildren. When not travelling to ministry points, Stephen pastors a house church. Stephen and Bev enjoy being empty nesters but are blessed with frequent visits by their children.

RYAN SKALING, Atlantic Field Director

Ryan joined One Hope Canada in the fall of 2015 after pastoring for three-and-a-half years in Ontario and 11 years in New Brunswick. He, Joanna, and their four daughters joined the Mission to restart the Truth for Youth Bible Camp as Blomidon Bible Camp in his native Nova Scotia. Ryan’s years of leading church ministry motivated him to create a space where believers could grow in Jesus and invite their community to know Him too. After watching God do a good work in that first summer at Blomidon Bible Camp, Ryan became the Atlantic field director in February 2017. Ryan loves to work at the camp with his family, while having the privilege of helping other ministry points in his field bring the hope of knowing Jesus to Atlantic Canada.

DON COLLINS National Board, vice chair Don Collins is the vice chairperson of One Hope Canada’s national board and has served in Christian ministry for over 50 years, including two years (2009– 2011) as the national director of CSSM Ministries.

It helps us to understand more clearly what core values are and what a vision statement is if we see them in contrast. A vision statement is a hope for the future. What changes in our country and culture do we envision— dream for—as we see our evangelistic and discipling purposes being fulfilled? By contrast, our core values are a clear statement describing who we are today. Core values are not a goal—not what we aim to become—but what we sincerely believe is true about One Hope Canada now. Our core values are simple: we are desperately dependent on God, completely confident in the Bible, and continually committed to being family—God’s family—in which One Hope Canada is situated. It is vitally important that these core values remain true in One Hope Canada. As true statements of who we are today, core values are essential. They are our DNA. What we do and where we aim our resources grow out of our core values. We remember our core values when selecting staff, volunteers, and board members. We don’t ask our team members to adopt these values so they can serve with us, we are looking for team members who already hold to these values.
