is opening statement began: Oh, my God, bless all those who are around me through the grace and influence of Jesus Christ our Saviour, change the curiosity of those who are paying attention to me, change that curiosity into sympathy with me. Louis Riel prayed these words aloud to open his address to the jury at the conclusion of his five day trial in 1885. Riel, leader of the North-West Rebellion, was found guilty on six counts of treason, and though the jury recommended mercy, he was hung on November 16, 1885, in Regina. Eight months later, Wilfrid Laurier spoke in the House of Commons, questioning the wisdom of Riel’s execution. He opened his remarks by referencing a prayer to God about healing wounds inflicted on the battlefield. Two politicians with widely diverse backgrounds, each with a different vision for Canada, and yet both holding a common worldview, with God and the Christian faith as central to the new nation. Today, at 150 years young, as Canada reaches adolescent age as a country, most Canadians do not hold such a worldview. For the first time since Confederation, less than 50 per cent of our population identifies as being “Christian” (even in the broadest sense of the word). Canada no longer esteems Judeo-Christian values. It is, unfortunately, now a nation that often sidelines those who do. Our country has become our mission field and we are called to engage it with the truth and hope of the Gospel. Peter wrote these encouraging words while under Roman rule:

But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. “Do not fear their threats; do not be frightened.” But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect (1 Peter 3:14-16). The church in Canada has basked in a favoured position for so long we have forgotten that what Peter’s readers experienced is common for millions of fellow believers today. Let us strengthen weak knees and engage our country—not to fight for our rights, but to serve our communities with gentleness and respect, proclaiming the truth and hope of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Who Is One Hope Canada? O

ne cold, wintry evening in Illinois, two men knelt together to pray at a local street mission. They were as different as night and day: one, a young pastor, heart burning for the lost; the other, a weathered homeless man, emerging from a life of alcoholism to find new hope in Christ. The young pastor, twenty-three-year-old J. Lloyd Hunter, was overcome with a single thought after leading the older gentleman to Christ: “If only this thread of wasted existence had been won to Christ as a boy, not only his soul, but his LIFE would have been saved! ” That thought, planted by the Holy Spirit, was a seed that grew and germinated in Lloyd’s heart. A few years later, in 1926, Lloyd eagerly met with a group of Christian businessmen in Winnipeg to discuss the need for rural parts of western Canada to be reached with the Gospel, but he left discouraged because nothing was decided. Lloyd returned to his hotel room and dropped to his knees, “Lord, if you really want me in children’s work in Manitoba, provide me with $150.00 as a sign to get the work started!” A knock at the door disturbed his prayer. A man he had met earlier in the lobby shoved a slip of paper into his hands and hurried down the hall. Lloyd looked at it; he was holding a $50 cheque. Back inside his room, he breathed a prayer of thankfulness. Mid-prayer, yet another rap sounded on the door. The same man stood there, and handed Lloyd a second cheque. “I didn’t give you what the Lord told me to,” he quietly stated. “Here is the rest.” The second cheque was for $100.

By the raw faith of the Hunters and those who joined them, the newly formed Canadian Sunday School Mission was launched into action. Lloyd wasted no time in living out his passion of reaching children. A free week of camp was offered in exchange for reciting 500 verses, and children across Canada rose to the challenge. In 1930, Gimli Bible Camp, on the shores of Lake Winnipeg, was purchased as the Mission’s first camp. Children memorized Bible verses in droves, and soon other provinces also acquired camp property. By 1950, the Canadian Sunday School Mission was sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ in every province of Canada. In 2014, Canadian Sunday School Mission changed its name to One Hope Canada (L’Espoir Du Canada in French) to better reflect the Mission’s passion of bringing the hope, found only in Jesus, to the nation of Canada. Today One Hope Canada has nearly 200 year round missionaries spread from Vancouver Island to Newfoundland, serving at fifty-five ministry points, and ministering to over 33,000 children and youth each year.

I was born in 1930 and when I was seven or eight, Eleanor Kennedy came to the Oxbow/Carnduff area in southern Saskatchewan. She held one hour Bible classes in many schools, traveling by horse and buggy. She helped with children’s and youth activities, Sunday evenings, and one week of VBS in the summer. She got many interested in attending Estevan Bible Camp. Eleanor served in that area for ten years and many children were saved through her ministry.

I worked at Camp Silversides in the kitchen and as a cabin leader in my younger years. Those were special days of helping others. My message to the children was, "You are a person who is important.” EILEEN, THREE HILLS, AB

We listened to CSSM radio broadcasts as a family and I was one of the campers who memorized 500 Bible verses to earn a free week at camp. I was so disappointed when I got sick and couldn’t go to camp that summer.

I attended a Vacation Bible School in July 1964 and received a certificate signed by Lillian Zwicker and Annabelle Fletcher. During that week, I asked the Lord Jesus to be my Savior; faithful to His promises, He has kept me near to Him through all these years and guided me through many storms. I kept the certificate as a special treasure all these years. It reminds me of how and when the Lord Jesus planted His love deep, deep in my heart.

I went to a CSSM VBS in my church and attended a camp, held at New Brunswick Bible Institute. The camp later moved to Pugwash, NS. Mr. Robins, who had joined Mr. Parschauer at NBBI, drove a truck loaded with camp supplies and around fifteen children to Pugwash. I accepted the Lord at camp that summer and after graduating from NBBI, spent many summers helping with the catering at Sandy Cove Bible Camp. GRETA, FREDERICTON, NB

Our parents, Jack and Ruby Powles, believed so much in camp ministry and were great supporters! They peeled vegetables and took out garbage at Sylvan Lake, now Camp Silversides, for several summers until it got to be too much for them. I will make sure my siblings see this magazine because we placed our parents’ memorial funds with One Hope Canada. In 1945, as an eleven-year-old lad, I attended a DVBS conducted by two young ladies from New Brunswick Bible Institute. This was my first contact with CSSM and my first time to hear the Gospel. I accepted the Lord as my Savior during the closing program. I attended Sandy Cove Bible Camp, which was close to my home. I loved camp. After graduating from high school, I entered New Brunswick Bible Institute. In my opinion, Mr. Parschauer founded the school because he needed workers for summer camp and DVBS ministries! I was surprised when asked to become CSSM’s acting maritimes director. I expect I hold the record as the youngest area director, since I was only 19. It was a great summer, all went well, and Mr. McAllister took over in the fall. I give so much credit for the wonderful lives we have lived to the early influence of CSSM. GLENDEN, FREDERICTON, NB

My mother, Eva Wieler, at 15 years of age, memorized 1100+ Scripture verses, which qualified her to attend Gimli Bible Camp. This was the most Bible verses memorized anywhere in Manitoba. I was about 9 or 10 when I attended Dauphin Bible Camp in the late 40s . We slept in small two-person canvas tents and walked long distances for our camp activities. Many of us kids went on to become missionaries or pastors. There was small pay, but great reward. ERNEST, WINNIPEG, MB

British Columbia  AMASA Hearing that I would recheck my list to see if a camper was eligible for a five-year ribbon, he responded, “Don’t worry about checking. Being at camp is “ribbon” enough!”  ECHO LAKE BIBLE CAMP Back in June, our view of the summer was marred by obstacles, challenges, needs, and exhaustion. Looking back, what a pleasure to see the summer was full of wonder, amazement, and thankfulness. God worked and provided in amazing ways and we were carried along by His grace and strength.  HOPE BAY BIBLE CAMP This summer was amazing: new washroom and shower facilities, faithful cooks, incredible staff, kids, and families opening their hearts to accept the truth of the Gospel. We are humbled and grateful.  MAPLE SPRINGS BIBLE CAMP A highlight: approving every request for camper sponsorship. We believe all children should get the chance to come to camp. One cabin leader, still a student, donated $230 so a camper could attend Teen Camp!

Our Purpose Statement We present the Gospel, particularly to those having the least opportunity to hear of Christ and especially to children and youth, and we disciple believers for living and serving through His Church.

he God story at Lake Of The Trees Bible Camp had plot twists, villains, and one great Hero. Chapter one opened May 23 with a windstorm falling 30 large trees. Thankfully, they missed buildings and equipment, but left the power off for 65 hours and a massive clean up. The power was restored just hours before our Going Deep weekend with 70 campers and staff on site. God provided many friends over the following weeks to haul branches and firewood. Chapter two opened with record camper registrations, and a best-ever attendance at our free Camp Day. This preceded a great week of staff training and a wonderful first week of camp ministry. But the plot thickened July 7 when a forest fire 40 kilometers away forced evacuation of our 110 campers, work crew, and staff. Two days later, the 34 staff and families evacuated again when fire blocked our second major escape route. Although challenging, God provided wonderfully during our two-week evacuation and four-week shutdown. While our camp was closed, our summer staff blessed other Bible camps, yet we hoped the 230 campers and youth work crew would return. The third chapter started August 3 when God helped us reopen, including an added session until September 2. Then, on August 12, God provided a day of cool rain, right after lightning hit too close for comfort. Smoky days and new fires to the east and south eroded a third of parents’ confidence over those five weeks. But those who did come enjoyed less smoky air, a warm lake, good food, great Bible teaching, fantastic staff, and forever memories. We engaged the story God wanted to write, and He is good and trustworthy!

hen the call came for a medical emergency at the waterfront, I raced to help. Lifeguards and health attendants were responding to an injured swimmer, so I directed the remaining campers and leaders away from the waterfront. As the large group of cold, wet campers left the beach with towels, goggles, and snorkels in hand, I reassured them the swimmer was in good hands. As we neared the jungle swing, I saw a boy on the bench, watching the lifeguards work. When I told the camper he needed to leave, he replied, “I can’t leave. I’m helping.” “Tell me how you are helping,” I said as I leaned over to him. “I couldn’t do anything to help her, but I knew I could pray to God, because He listens to us. He can help that girl.” Throughout that child’s week, his leaders and role models had been engaging with him, showing him how to pray, teaching him that prayer lets us engage with a real God, a God who really loves and cares for us. As God continued to engage with that boy throughout the week, He did the same for the injured girl who returned to camp the next day.

Alberta  BETHEL GOSPEL CHAPEL We are encouraged by two new families attending, good community outreach through VBS, a harvest supper, an outdoor service, a Double Portion concert, and outreach ministry by two college drama teams from Peace River Bible Institute and Nipawin Bible College. We have also been blessed with unity as we walked through difficult decisions.

BY DAVE KENNEY, PASTOR  FAIRVIEW GOSPEL CHAPEL On June 18, 2017, Fairview Gospel Chapel joined the Associated Gospel Churches, a ministry partner of One Hope Canada. This brought us into association with 150 Associated Gospel Churches in Canada. We are praying for and following up those who attended David Thompson Bible Camp and for the three who accepted Christ during VBS in Fairview and Whitelaw.  PENHOLD CHURCH OF HOPE We had a great Summer Kids Club— over 60 kids! Most attend our weekly after school programs and some families have attended Sunday morning services.  CAMP SILVERSIDES We had 93 campers accept Christ as Savior! During Teen Camp, we had six baptisms! Four were campers and two were staff. It was so exciting to see these young people make such bold professions of their faith and choose to be baptized at camp.  DAVID THOMPSON BIBLE CAMP A five-year summer and off-season retreat camper who helped us as a go-fer for a few weeks got saved, a highlight for staff who had known him over the years.  ROSS HAVEN BIBLE CAMP We slashed camp fees and camper numbers surged, resulting in well over twice as many kids coming to faith as the year before. Most were from unreached homes.  FAITH BIBLE CAMP Camp ran smoothly this year. We had more than enough staff and excellent speakers. It was great seeing God work in the lives of campers and staff.

eslie and I wear two complimentary hats—one as pastoral couple with Mannville Community Church, the other as community missionaries. Mannville, with a population of only 800, and located two hours east of Edmonton has many hurting citizens, most of whom need Jesus. Our church has a clothing exchange and we hear stories of those in need and stories of pain. One family so appreciated connecting with us they care for the church lawn and greenery. Hopefully, we will see them in church soon. Another lady came for clothes, and not only left with a new outfit but also books from the church library. Chats with these and others are always interesting as we engage them where they are and seek opportunities to present the Gospel. We have visited in their living rooms and they in ours. We visit everywhere we can—hospitals, long term care facilities—taking the Word to shut-ins. It is our privilege to sometimes bring communion. We also work at connecting with community youth, hanging out where they are, engaging them as we can—gym nights, being in the classroom, helping with the school’s hot lunch program. Again, we hear more stories of hurting relationships and seek to gain their confidence and trust, looking for ways to present the Gospel to those who otherwise would not hear it. efore camp season started, our worship team and I spoke and led worship in many area churches, sharing camp needs, the work being done, and the power of camp ministry. These presentations offered good opportunities to touch base with our financial supporters and to meet many who have not been involved at Whitney Lake Bible Camp. We encouraged them to not only support us financially, but to come and assist the camp through working. During camp, the staff and I talked to parents during registration and pick up times. One was surprised we needed volunteers before and during camps. “That’s why we didn’t come. We didn’t know you needed help.” This year, we were pleased to see God using us to increase those involved in camp preparation and programming. At teen camp, our speaker told the campers that whatever they put into the week is what they would get out of it. Most campers were well engaged in all activities. One was exceptionally focused, participating wholeheartedly in every Bible class, chapel, and Bible memorization activity. He paid close attention to what was being taught and what he could learn. This enthusiasm stemmed from his experience at last year’s camp, when a tiny spark was planted in his heart. For the entire year he had wanted to commit his life to Christ but felt unqualified because his family and friends were not believers. After engaging through the week, this camper opened up to his cabin leader about his fears and after that year of contemplation and a lengthy conversation, the young man became a child of God!

An essential question faces believers and their churches:

“How can we effectively engage our community and country with the Gospel?” t is a challenging question because Canada’s social and religious landscape has changed so dramatically. A 2017 Ipsos Reid poll discovered that in the last five years, the number of Canadians who identify themselves as Christians has decreased by 20 percent, with only 48 percent calling themselves Christians (in the broadest sense of the word). A new category of religious opinion sees 20 percent of Canadians describing themselves as spiritual but not religious. And less than 25 percent of Canadians between 18-34 consider themselves

genuinely love our neighbours, because our acts of service to our community are more likely to be genuine acts of love rather self-serving public relations efforts.” publicly or privately religious. That compares to 40 percent above age 55. David Haskell, a Wilfried Laurier religion sociologist, said the survey captured current trends but “I was a surprised by the speed of change.” These discouraging changes can can lead to two responses: close the gates and retreat to ensure we keep the faithful safe from the prevailing winds of culture. The second and equally unhelpful response is to make our mission primarily about communicating truth on issues rather than loving people with the truth. Wyatt Graham, executive director of The Gospel Coalition Canada, admits that while current trends are concerning, he is encouraged by what he sees as a “new movement of evangelism” characterized by leaders and pastors under 40 and their “fidelity to the truth of the Bible and to the preaching of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.” “Canadians—especially younger Canadians— want us to be authentic and hold fast to our beliefs. Slick evangelistic techniques and church programs have lost their luster. We are simply no longer culturally Christian. So these things fail. But what

succeeds is honesty and compassion . . . tell people what you believe with love. That works.” Derek deVries, senior pastor at Transcona Alliance Church in Winnipeg, agrees. “At TAC we put a premium on our people personally being able and willing to read the Word of Christ from a Gospel-centred perspective one-on-one with family, friends, neighbours, and each other. We see programs as beneficial if they can support that ground level rich genuine Gospel ministry. We want to trust God that the pieces of the Gospel that are most offensive—even when shared in love—are also going to be the most glorious to those who are being saved, so we don’t want to hide them with flashiness or change them. I think that keeping the Gospel central also helps us to genuinely love our neighbours, because our acts of service to our community are more likely to be genuine acts of love rather self-serving public relations efforts.” As this new movement of Gospel-centered ministry takes hold in the heart of the Canadian church, Graham remains hopeful. “We need to remember that Christ is building His church and the gates of hell will not overcome it (Matt. 16:18). Since that is true, how much more true is it that the gatekeepers of secular Canada will not overcome God’s work in Canada?”

Manitoba  ADVENTURE DAY CAMP While in Matheson Island (230 kilometers north of Winnipeg), a young boy became a Christian even though many campers mocked the Gospel message we were sharing. Adventure Day Camp travelled to ten locations across Manitoba this summer.  DAUPHIN BIBLE CAMP One night a cabin was too rowdy for devos, so they just hung out. A camper asked his cabin leader, “We are bad sometimes. Why are you so patient and kind with us?” The leader’s response about God’s patience with him was a catalyst to that boy choosing to follow Jesus!  ROSEAU RIVER BIBLE CAMP We were going to be short on staff for the last week and a cabin leader said she felt God telling her to be at camp for that week. We watched a God story unfold that week as she listened to a young girl’s story and shared Christ’s love with her. The Holy Spirit changed the girl’s life that night as she accepted Christ as her Saviour. Praise be to our Father.  VALLEY VIEW BIBLE CAMP We are so thankful our blueprints were finally approved. What a long process. Now we can move forward with our chapel/chalet building project. Summer held many blessings as we saw God's faithfulness in meeting needs, specifically in providing Christcentred summer missionaries.

came to camp expecting a normal week with some challenges like last summer, but ended up working one-on-one with a mentally challenged girl. The other staff were supportive, reminding me I was doing a good job. His mighty work

y husband and I, immigrants with a Chinese ethnic background, served in the Chinese church community in Toronto for twenty years before settling in Carberry, Manitoba, seven years ago. When we connected with the Chinese community in Brandon, we were surprised to discover close to 1,500 Chinese immigrants, mostly segregated from the mainstream culture by the language barrier. Our family was introduced to Turtle Mountain Bible Camp (TMBC), south of Brandon, by church friends in 2011. Our seven children enjoyed everything the camp offered on Family Day, the annual open house in June. Soon, our whole family was involved, and over the past six years we have gone from being campers to working as volunteers. Family Day offers a unique opportunity to introduce Chinese immigrants to the Christian culture, opening hearts and minds to the Gospel. In 2013, we invited Chinese friends to attend, and have been amazed by the growing number of Chinese immigrants who return year after year, although they can barely speak English. God’s Spirit is moving! Those we invite, invite others because they appreciate the camp’s love and care. This June, a day was set aside for 125 Chinese to enjoy a special service and activities. It was my pleasure to translate programs and flyers into Chinese to help the message be presented. Monarch provides such a caring and Spirit-led environment, it seems impossible not to experience growth.  WILLOW SPRINGS CAMP Our theme this summer was Adventure Seekers, based on Matthew 6:33. Campers and staff were challenged to seek first His kingdom and righteousness above all the other stuff. Praise God, we saw this happen!

ctober marks the beginning of a new year for SONshine Bible Clubs. I am thankful for the dedicated volunteers who devote time and energy each week to share the Gospel, the good news. This fall, we hope to operate the club in four Sault Ste. Marie schools. Many children attending clubs come from unchurched homes. Meet Stephan, a grade 6 student who came from a good home but had never heard a thing about Jesus. He attended club faithfully last fall and as we were preparing for our usual Christmas break, he couldn’t understand why we weren’t going to have club for a few weeks. “Why would you stop when you have this story to tell about Jesus?” Why would we stop? A good question. We should be taking every opportunity to tell the story of Jesus, not just in clubs but in each of our lives. “I love to tell the story! ’Twill be my theme in glory—To tell the old, old story of Jesus and His love” (A. The summer of life and death "For this very reason, Christ died and returned to life so that He might be the Lord of both the dead and the living" (Romans 14:9). n July 1, 2017, Mark's father completed his earthly pilgrimage and received a glorious "Welcome Home!" How precious to know he is safe in the arms of Jesus! Dad passed away following a severe stroke that occurred sixteen days earlier. With our VBS program in full swing and Bible camp at Sunny Cove poised to begin, we were overwhelmed until the Lord blessed us with many special people who came alongside. Our daughter Rachel and son Ben stepped up to assume most of our (Mark and Tina’s) responsibilities. We are so grateful for those who, months before, offered to serve this summer. We don’t know what we would have done without those counsellors, cooks, speakers, musicians, junior staff, nurses, lifeguards, and activity group leaders. Many others prayed. We were so blessed to share Jesus’ life with 98 awesome campers at Sunny Cove Camp and 198 children at VBS! To God be the glory, great things He has done! It was awesome that the Lord enabled us to accomplish all our summer ministry programs even in the midst of an unanticipated death. A summary of our busy summer: • a seven-day outreach trip (hosting a block party, conducting door-to-door evangelism, and more!) with 29 high school students to Chicago • five weeks of Northern Lights Bible Fun (VBS) programs • one week of Sunny Cove Bible Camp • an eight-day wilderness canoe trip with 35 teens • many other outreach endeavours to those with the least opportunity to hear the Good News of life in Christ In the midst of a death, lives changed for eternity. Many experienced the promise of eternal life through Jesus' death, a death that had no power over Him because He rose to life! He died that we might live. Throughout the summer of 2017, Jesus Christ was exalted and the Gospel was made known during a time that we will remember as the summer of life and death.

Troublemaker Wisdom meets

uring a 1968 Easter service I found out all my buddies were going to camp for spring break. We attended different schools, so I missed the run-up to their impending departure. I wanted to go and the bus was leaving right after church for Hope Bay Bible Camp in the Gulf Islands. I had no time to go home and pack so the guys said I could borrow their clothes. Jumping on that bus led to one of the greatest changing events of my life. After just one day in camp, it was obvious to me, because of my extensive sixteen years of life experience, the camp director didn’t have a firm grip on camp leadership. So I took charge. My idea of taking charge meant bringing water balloons to a volleyball game. I forgot to mention this was a mixed camp with boys’ cabins on one side of a creek and the girls on the other. My idea of taking charge also meant organizing a late-night raid on the girls’ cabins, after first tying our counselor to his bed. The next morning, Dave Griffin, BC director for Canadian Sunday School Mission, invited me in for a chat. Oh oh. My foolishness was being challenged and I knew I was in deep trouble. They would certainly hang me by the thumbs and pelt me with rotten tomatoes. I would be banned from camp for life!

Mr. Griffin welcomed me into the office and shook my hand. “Deryl, has anyone ever said you have great leadership skills and creative talent?” I was thinking this was a setup and that my dad would appear around the corner, belt in hand. “No, no,” I replied cautiously. “You do,” he continued. “I talked to your dad and would like to offer you a job at the camp this summer as our sports and event coordinator.” “What?” I thought. Of course, I said yes and never caused Dave or the camp leadership another ounce of trouble. I jumped on board and helped as much as I could. That was the first of many summers with CSSM that God used to develop me as a leader and most importantly, as His child. Today, I marvel at Dave’s wisdom. He took a smart-alec troublemaker and gave him an opportunity to channel his abundant energy and passion for good.

Faithful Servant

Rosella de Montmorency 1927 - 2017

osella de Montmorency, a faithful CSSM missionary, passed away in Winnipeg March 15, 2017. She is with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Rosella, or Rosie as she was affectionately called by friends and family, served CSSM for 39 years, nearly her entire working life. She responded to the Gospel when an evangelist came to her rural church near Woodstock, Ontario, and the Spirit of God prompted her to trust in Jesus. After her 1953 graduation from Toronto Bible College (now Tyndale University), she and co-worker Shirley Whitehead served with the Canadian Sunday School Mission (One Hope Canada) in Amaranth, Manitoba, giving religious education in area schools. That grew to twenty-five schools, three Sunday schools, and Bible clubs. In an interview, Rosie stated, “It was a joy to work there, even though transportation was by foot or bicycle! During the prairie winters, traveling from school to school could be very cold.” God later supplied Willy, a little car.

Rosie and Shirley also had the joy of helping to start Ochre River Bible Camp, which later moved to near Dauphin. Now called Dauphin Bible Camp, it is a One Hope Canada ministry, one of 38 camps the Mission operates across the nation. Following their time in Manitoba, Shirley and Rosie moved to Sault Ste. Marie, teaching Bible in public schools and working at Galilean Bible Camp, two hours west of Sudbury. By 1966, Rosie and Shirley felt their interest in children’s ministry growing stronger and that the Lord was leading them into children’s crusades with the Mission. For the next 26 years, they travelled throughout Canada, teaching at summer camps, AWANA clubs, Sunday schools, church children’s clubs, and retirement homes. Not only were Rosella’s beautiful chalk drawings enjoyed by children and adults, the Gospel was made clear with puppets and stories. Many former campers still point to Rosie and Shirley’s ministry as the beginning of their personal relationship with the Lord. CANADA’S HOPE

 STANSTEAD COMMUNITY OUTREACH As we work to share the Gospel with the Eastern Townships Region, we plan to hold several Gospel events before Christmas. Please pray for funding to cover our expenses and that we can continue to build relationships with those in our community.

er children had just finished camp and she wanted to know if she could register their girls for next summer. She told me their daughters, age five and six, had learned so much. “And my husband and I have learned a lot too!” After I informed her that yes, she could register right away and could pay later, she said the girls, who had attended day camp all summer, were passing on everything they learned to their parents (both non-believers), albeit with a slightly different vocabulary. The youngest had told her father he needed to believe God so he wouldn’t go “to the devil place”. That’s not quite how we had put it during the Bible lesson time, but it was one of many seeds God had sown through our youngest camper! While children and youth are undeniably the focus of our ministry at Camp des Îles and within One Hope Canada, the phrase from our mission statement “and their families” reminds me of our larger goal: Go preach the Good News to everyone (Mark 16:15). When I hear stories about how new, young disciples are making other disciples, I see that goal being accomplished and rejoice as the Good News continues to spread.

Into the Kingdom

e always seek new ways to engage with our community. If we continue with the same program and same activities, we will miss opportunities to impact more kids. This summer we added a mobile day camp called City Camp to our program, to attract younger kids to hear about Jesus. To engage kids we brought in inflatables, a portable climbing wall, laser tag, plasma cars, mini golf, gaga ball, Lego, and more. We wanted to draw kids in for an experience unlike anything they’d ever had. Through this, kids can understand that some preconceived notions of church or God being boring are incorrect. After the first week, our second week doubled in size because parents and kids were talking about how much fun it was. Camp is a safe place but sometimes we need to meet parents and kids where they are, rather than wait for them to come to us. City Camp’s secondary goal was to engage with churches. We wanted to work with other ministries to break down walls that keep ministries apart. If we as Christian ministries can’t work outside our camp or church walls, we miss out on opportunities to bring more people into the kingdom than we can alone. Wow, God showed His provision this summer. For example, in one week we had three volunteers cancel just two hours before camp started. Ten minutes later we were greeted by three unscheduled people asking to volunteer for the week. Thanks, God!

 MANITOU LAKE BIBLE CAMP It’s hard to pick just one highlight, but one of our favourites was journeying with several of our summer staff as they sought God’s direction for their life. A couple of them registered for Bible college and are investing time into building a solid foundation!

 RANGER LAKE BIBLE CAMP Another summer of faith in action and the Gospel bringing freedom! We are thankful for the many opportunities we had to share Christ’s love through activities, words, and serving.

 STONEY LAKE BIBLE CAMP I love the WOW factor. Like when a camper gets tossed off the blob for the first time, or is on the Tizzy Tower boat for the first time. Stoney is all about WOWs. The best WOW is when a camper begins an eternal relationship with Jesus Christ as Saviour. WOW!

 TORCH TRAIL BIBLE CAMP We hosted camps for Peter Ballantyne First Nations; please pray that each person who entered the camp will be drawn to our God of comfort and hope.

Seeing Lives Change

useland Bible Camp is a mix of fun and learning the truth of God’s Word. Each day includes wall climbing, archery, laser tag, bubble soccer, crafts, competitive and team building games, age-appropriate chapel times, and wonderful meals! These words, shared by parents, reflect our work: A ten-year-old camper’s mom: “The girls are already asking to go back next year! I'm sure we can make it happen. Our daughter told me she asked Jesus into her heart and that He is now Lord of her life. She told me God is making big changes in her life. This is the first time she has taken real steps on her own in her faith. We are so grateful for camp—she has more confidence and boldness in her faith. That is so exciting.” From a mom: “Kudos to the whole team at camp! My teen boys came home so happy and determined to return! My heart is overjoyed as I watch them sing and participate in worship songs. They are eager to learn more about the Bible and God’s love. What an outstanding job by the whole team!” Another mom said she didn’t know if her six year old would want to stay at camp. But when it was time to pick her up, the child did not want to leave.

s Madge Lake Bible Camp’s program director this summer, one of my favourite responsibilities was organizing new experiences. For example, we were excited to have twelve campers in our week-long Impact Camp, an intense discipleship program for young adults. A new challenge that week was an all-day silent prayer retreat during a canoe trip to a small island in the middle of Madge Lake. No talking, except during chapel. That evening, the campers admitted they had not been excited about being quiet for so long and didn’t think they could do it, but were surprised with how easy it was. One girl said, “It’s amazing how much I heard from God when I stopped talking.” Another exciting thing at Impact Camp every night after chapel was what we call the Throne Room Sessions, based on the Hebrews verse that says we can approach God’s throne with confidence. We explored different ways of entering into prayer with God, taking prayer walks, interceding for nations of the world, stargazing, and praying. On our last night we welcomed prayer warriors from local churches to pray over each camper. How special to serve a glorious God who cares about us and wants to speak to us!

Atlantic Canada  BLOMIDON BIBLE CAMP (NS) It is exciting to partner with area churches to help them reach their communities. Churches influenced campers to come in a variety of ways, and we saw God do a good work in these campers’ lives.  CAPE BRETON BIBLE CAMP (NS) Our highlight this summer was certainly our 50th anniversary celebration! About 300 participated; it was so amazing to see how many had been saved at this camp over the years. Praise God!  NEWFOUND LIFE BIBLE CAMP (NL) The Lord opened two new communities, Norris Arm and Lewisporte to VBS! Each day's Bible lesson explored the coolest book on the planet and later in the week, the children eagerly received a copy of God's Word.  SANDY COVE BIBLE CAMP (NB) What a summer: four salvation decisions, a mom challenged to lead her child spiritually, adult and family ministries grew, solid senior leaders available to answer campers' questions about faith and God, heightened awareness and interest in SCBC, and a great team of eager volunteers!  ANDREW AND TANYA DOREY It has been another great VBS season as we ministered in twelve communities this summer in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, with two of those communities being military bases. Many seeds were planted.

very camp worker knows the moment only too well: it is the end of the week, the campers are played-out, the staff members are tired and cranky, and in an atmosphere of exhaustion, it is far too easy to miss the moments of God at work. Two campers are coloring while waiting to be picked up, and I am preparing for the next day. When I sit down, one of them hands me a drawing of three crosses, explaining: “because Hampton Bible Camp is about Jesus!” This is the story that comes to mind most often when I talk about the ministry of day camp at Hampton Bible Camp. God has given us an incredible opportunity to build relationships with many children over eight weeks, some of whom have attended every week of day camp for the past three years. In the course of a week, two weeks, a month, or two months, they encounter Jesus in a transformative way. In turn, I encounter Jesus through them. I see Jesus at work when they remark during craft time that the happiness they see in me is “because she has the Holy Spirit!” or “because Jesus gave her new life!” I see Jesus at work when they hear the story of Christ crucified and can’t help but interject “but He didn’t do anything wrong!” These are children from my community. I meet their families in the lineup at Tim Hortons and in the aisles of the grocery store; I wave to them at the playground while walking to work. Generosity

e entered this summer seeking to ignite and nourish life-transforming relationships with Jesus Christ, fully believing God’s plan was through a dynamic camp experience. Evidenced by the response of campers and parents, we saw how God had equipped us and our staff to create a fun and safe camp adventure, and how even more importantly He used us to impact children and youth to have that life-transforming relationship with Jesus. Whether an angry boy who was hurting because his father walked out on him, or a depressed girl who didn’t feel self-worth because her parents were not present to nurture her, God showed His concern for the hearts of the young people in Miramichi. One really encouraging story: a local boy was scheduled for heart surgery and a GoFundMe page was set up to raise money for the family. The morning after the boy’s surgery, our speaker was talking about being generous. Many campers and staff gave some or all of their tuck money to help the child and his family. It was awesome to see young people learn about Jesus being generous with His life for us and how that impacted their lives to give selflessly for the sake of another!

hen I hear the word engage, I can’t help but think of the many volunteers in our ministry points across Canada. Each summer, men and women donate a week or more as cooks, cooks’ helpers, nurses, camp grandparents, or with maintenance and cleaning. Although most of our ministry points have full time or part time missionary staff and seasonal summer staff, we could not function without these volunteers. For a week at a time, they are fully engaged behind the scenes so our frontline staff can concentrate on sharing the Gospel. Yes, the hours are long, the work is hard, and at times, conditions can be difficult with heat, rain, cold, and mosquitoes. In most cases, when you talk to these volunteers in the off season, they describe their camp week as most memorable and feel blessed to have served. I was once asked what I thought heaven will be like. I think it will be much like a One Hope Canada Bible camp where we live and work with men and women from different backgrounds, churches, denominations, and cultures. We appear at the start of a week, work furiously all day, and serve together to bless the staff and campers. Differences are set aside during that week and at the end of each day we sit in chapel together, worshipping and praising Jesus. Talk about being engaged in ministry! What an example to our campers.
