T

his summer I visited eleven camps in five different provinces. From New Brunswick to British Columbia, I met men and women, young and old, serving as dish washers, archery instructors, cooks, boat drivers, office receptionists, program directors, nurses, speakers, cabin leaders, and horse wranglers. I was reminded again that it takes a village to do camp ministry. The task of creating and coordinating a week-long, high-energy program that will keep kids and adults safe, having fun, and open to new experiences is not for the faint of heart. The range of responsibilities and skills needed to pull it off is massive; the number of volunteers and summer missionaries staggering. Yet at more than thirty-five One Hope Canada locations across the country, this was a reality. As amazing as this logistical feat is, the most humbling part of it all is what the countless volunteers and summer missionaries say when asked, “Why do you do it?” The response is always the same, “Because kids need Jesus.” It’s why the 40-year-old takes a week of holidays from a full-time job to work fourteen-hour days in a hot kitchen, and why the 19-year-old turns down a better-paying opportunity to serve twenty-four hours a day, six days a week, as a cabin leader. It’s why our board members, after working sixty hours a week in their businesses, will come out to see camp in action and give up evenings at home in the middle of winter to participate in camp board meetings. It’s because kids need Jesus and the good news He proclaims. In this edition of Canada’s Hope you will read just a few of the stories from this summer, highlighting lives changed because of this good news. These few pages are a tiny fraction of the book God is writing. Lives are being forever changed and He is using your time, prayers, and support to make it happen.

staple of Bible camp ministry in central Alberta has closed its doors, following more than seventy-five years of active ministry. Faith Bible Camp joined Canadian Sunday School Mission (One Hope Canada) in 1988, sharing the good news of Jesus with thousands of children in Wetaskiwin County. It already had roots in the area, having grown out of Fisherton Bible Camp, a ministry launched by local farmers in the mid‑1940s. Faith Bible Camp did not own property, instead renting from other area camps. Eventually coming to an arrangement with Covenant Bay Bible Camp (CBBC) on the shores of Pigeon Lake, Faith Bible Camp offered two weeks of overnight camp each summer, using CBBC facilities. Jim Stenstrom served at Fisherton Bible Camp / Faith Bible Camp for many years during the 1970s and 1980s. A former CSSM Field Director for Alberta, he remembers the impact the camp’s missionaries had for the Gospel, and notes key leaders such as former directors Howard and Naomi Pearson, and in more recent years, Ian Pops and Colin and Krystal Fowell. “They always tried to feature missions and

missionaries as speakers at camp,” Jim recalls of the Pearsons. “That was influential. That was what got Joanne and me into the missionfield.” The Stenstroms would eventually go on to serve as missionaries overseas. Jim says local participation—churches and individuals—were key to ministry success. It helped keep costs low, allowing many families to send their children to the camp. “For many years, the camp thrived,” he says. “There was always that sense of rural commitment.” Faith Bible Camp’s shared arrangement with Covenant Bay came to a close following the summer of 2019—and then the pandemic hit, making typical camp ministry almost impossible. Determined to stay the course, Faith Bible Camp changed its focus in 2021 to become a mobile day camp ministry, taking camp on the road to surrounding communities including Drayton Valley, Millet, and Rocky Mountain House, among others. The model saw some success over the next two years, but church and community interest was waning and volunteers were few. Faith Bible Camp ceased operations in 2023.

This is

God's Camp I

These events weren’t in our plans, but were no surprise to God. This is His camp!

t was a quiet morning in early July. My initial plan was to run errands in town, but something made me hesitate. I couldn’t put my finger on it, but felt I should stay. After mowing grass and tidying things, I saw smoke southwest of the camp. BC was in the middle of an intense wildfire season, so I called our fire chief. “Call BC Wildfire Service immediately!” he instructed. Within minutes, two helicopters were bucketing water from the lake while a spotter plane circled.

Soon, BC Wildfire personnel were on site, arranging to take water from Echo Lake. A structure protection specialist arrived to assess how many buildings we had and what they’d need for sprinklers and pumps. As safety measures were put in place, we waited . . . and watched. EVACUATION

No campers were onsite during this emergency, although we were hosting several private groups. The fire seemed distant, so a church group arrived for their weekend event. When the wind picked up the next day, sending thick smoke into camp, BC Wildfire Service told us to evacuate. CLEARING CAMP

We wouldn’t see the camp or our home there for ten days. Would anything be standing when we returned? The days were long, and we received little news about what was happening. We knew the fire was getting closer—at one point just a kilometer away—but were thankful, confident that God’s people, locally and across the country, were praying for us. Finally some news! The winds turned at the last moment and our home and camp were spared! Fire crews used the camp as a staging area to fight other blazes.

NO SURPRISE

These events weren’t in our plans, but were no surprise to God. This is His camp! He knew the fire would stop just a kilometer away. He protected our camp, home, and family, and used camp facilities to bless hardworking firefighters. He also knew kids would still hear the good news of salvation! Although we didn’t run a camp program, we hosted a multi-church VBS at a Vanderhoof church in late July. A few days later, we welcomed a group of young adults for an event back at the camp. We have so many reasons to say thanks! Darcy Milroy is site director at Echo Lake Bible Camp, located between Vanderhoof and Fort St. James, BC.

British Columbia  AMASA I was a cabin leader in July. One new camper didn't bring a hat, so she borrowed one of ours. I told her she would need to return it. The last night of camp, I felt prompted inside to ask if she wanted to accept Jesus into her heart—she did! I led her through the sinner's prayer and she cried throughout. At the end she asked, "Can I keep the hat?"  LAKE OF THE TREES BIBLE CAMP Markus came to camp for the first time this summer. This 15-year-old had been in jail and was recovering from a drug addiction. While at camp, he heard the Gospel message for the first time. He was overwhelmed by voices in his head and couldn't rest. During one chapel he cried out to Jesus for help. Immediately the voices stopped and he accepted Jesus as Lord of his life! His smile the rest of the week was beautiful!

ur camp speaker phoned me at 9 pm, the night before our final week, teen camp. The news wasn’t good. “I’m so sorry, MARK WILSON with wildfires nearby I can’t leave my family to come speak.” Director There was no time to find a new speaker, and I had a lot of other work to do. Still, I love sharing about Jesus with campers, many of whom I know well. With both excitement and anxiety, I decided to fill in. That week was the best! Even with minimal prep time I was able to share the urgent and passionate love of Jesus, and the full, restorative life He offers. Some of our summer team also shared meaningful testimonies about God’s goodness in their lives. During that same camp, two friends arrived a day late, due to wildfires near their homes. At first, Natalie and Samantha struggled to connect with the group. They came with a lot of makeup, a lot of attitude, and a lot of snickering and eye-rolling. However their leaders really worked hard to build good relationships with them. One night, Natalie got stung by a bee; her finger swelled up and she was hysterical. However, while first aid was administered, the situation became a time of bonding, filled with laughter. Natalie even received a new nickname, “Fatty Finger.” Still, I wasn’t sure if camp had an impact. That is, until the girls ran up to me before going home, excited to give me a special gift. It was a key chain; each bead represented a fun camp memory or lesson. Some were silly like a bead for my orange hair, and one to represent Natalie’s fat finger. But also on the chain were beads portraying our initials, another representing Jesus and another for an answered prayer that their homes would be protected from the nearby wildfires. God used camp to bring great news and comfort to these sweet, sassy girls. MAPLE SPRINGS BIBLE CAMP is in Peachland, BC. • www.maplesprings.ca • 250 767 2354

SUMMER/FALL 2023

"Do you remember a summer when the Lord wasn’t good?"

NESS LAKE BIBLE CAMP

Hoping in God DAVE HORTON Executive Director

A

s we prepared for summer, I was reminded of Deuteronomy 31:8 (NIV) which says, "The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” Moses spoke these words to Joshua when he introduced him as Israel’s new leader. While Joshua’s role was not exactly the same as a camp director’s, those words still gave me great hope this summer. I definitely needed hope, because the last three weeks of June and the first two of July are my most emotionally difficult weeks. In these crunch weeks, we are usually short-staffed, training is incomplete, and we ask, "Is this possible?" The key to finding hope was to look in the rearview mirror before we let questions break our will to serve. Another question sometimes surfaces: Do you remember a summer when the Lord wasn’t good? The answer? Of course not! It has never happened. Ness Lake Bible Camp turned seventy this summer—seven decades of God providing people, resources, and the necessary skills when needed. The living God went ahead, giving us answers to questions we didn't know we’d have. This summer we welcomed 1,460 campers. Each was exposed to a community of believers and given clear opportunities to join those who found their hope in Christ. Seeing campers memorizing verses, having their eyes opened to God’s character, and proclaiming their faith in the risen Jesus was an unbelievable experience. Alberta  BEAR LAKE BIBLE CAMP Our team spent its last camp night sharing what God did in their lives as they served at camp. A junior cabin leader said he loves camp because it is one of the few places where he can let down his guard and be himself. Camp was a safe place for him to grow in his faith, free from outside pressures.  ROSS HAVEN BIBLE CAMP At Thursday morning chapel, I explained that those who heard CORNELIUS & Jesus’ final cry, “It is finished,” EVANGELINE would have recognized those THIESSEN words as a Roman victory cry. DIRECTOR Having vanquished the last enemy, an officer, with raised sword, would yell, “It is finished!” But unlike a Roman warrior, Jesus was victorious over sin and death. During a medieval game, the leader of the winning team, foam sword waving wildly, bellowed, “It is finished!” He had been listening in chapel. He got it.

ndy was talking about Joy Camp: “It was fun! Let’s do it again!” Andy doesn’t read, but under his arm he held his blue-bound Bible with pens sticking out. I was reminded of the precious fruit the Holy Spirit produces, completely apart from our abilities. The theme at our three Joy Camps this summer was Flourish Like a Tree. Speaker Cliff Spence reminded us through a song that “apples don’t grow on pear trees,” that God wants us to bear good fruit for Him. We saw that kind of fruit this summer. Joyful smiles from non-verbal campers. Melissa’s testimony in front of other girls. The servanthood of a young adult missionary who willingly surrendered his room to someone needing more comfortable accommodation. Brenda’s spontaneous thoughtfulness when she noticed a tired camp leader coughing and brought a cup of cold water. The fruit is ongoing. In the food line at Joy Chapel, Anthony, another camper, wanted his name on the clipboard for Praise and Prayer. He gave his requests with a stammering tongue—for family and uncles. Then he turned, encouraging his roommate to take part. But Mark couldn’t express himself so Anthony prompted, “How about your uncle and family?” Mark agreed. One camper helping another to share his concerns. Such sweet fruit! JOY CHAPEL MINISTRIES is in Grande Prairie, AB. •

CAMP SILVERSIDES

KORY SIKSTROM Director

After Camp, What Next?

S

ometimes campers arrive with big issues. This summer, suicide was a recurrent theme. Our leaders had numerous conversations with campers who struggled with suicidal thoughts and self-harm experiences. Needs are complex, relationships fractured, families broken. We preach Jesus for a week and send campers on their way, but James 2:16 says, “If one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace; keep warm and well fed’, but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it?” Campers’ needs are physical, spiritual, and relational. The need to follow up and maintain relationships is more urgent than ever. As we move further into a post-Christian culture, we must understand how to walk with these kids in their daily lives. Our connection-building activities during the year include weekend teen camper retreats, building relationships with like-minded ministries in nearby towns, and connecting kids with leaders there. We’re hoping to host day camps on non-school days to serve families needing extra help, while offering monthly face-to-face interaction with campers. For a short time each year campers experience a Jesus-rich environment. They thrive in the safety of His refuge for one week, then go home. So we pray, “Lord, we know You are with our campers in their homes. Show us how to join You in Your work of transforming lives. Amen.” CAMP SILVERSIDES is about half an hour from Red Deer, AB. • www.campsilversides.ca • 403 748 2689

Saskatchewan  DALLAS VALLEY RANCH CAMP This summer I had the incredible privilege of working at camp, sharing Jesus’ amazing love—and my love of horses—with kids! I've grown so much in my faith and learned what the real love of Jesus looks like. I've experienced the power of prayer, and met many great people. Camp changed me for the better. I'm counting down the days until next summer! (Jocelyn Young, riding instructor)  ESTEVAN BIBLE CAMP Paintball and wilderness skills were added to this summer’s camp activities. Campers learned to embrace the outdoors as we built relationships through unforgettable experiences like rushing through the trees, trying to dodge paintballs, and watching campfire flames grow from small sparks. Along with camp favorites like chapel and cabin times, kids will remember the love of Jesus through their encounters at camp.  KENOSEE LAKE BIBLE CAMP We have so many reasons to be thankful! Our total enrollment was up fifteen per cent and three quarters of our summer missionaries participated in discipleship programs. The Lord healed lives, called campers to Himself, and gave them His freedom. Not only that, we enjoyed our first summer in the new dining hall!  RANGER LAKE BIBLE CAMP “Look! A bald eagle!” Camper Jonas sat in the bow of our trip guide's canoe. Fred explained about the wildlife in the river valley, the same valley where Jonas’ ancestors had lived for generations. When we set up camp that evening, I heard Jonas ask Fred, “Were you a Christian ever since you were born?” That prompted Fred to share his most precious possession, his faith in Jesus.  STONEY LAKE BIBLE CAMP A crew member’s thank you note, sent to her crew boss, sums up why we run camp each summer. She talked about knowing Jesus most of her life but still struggled with doubts. Through the work crew discipleship, she realized how God used her doubts to answer questions and transform her life. Now she is ready to work on her relationship with the Lord!  TORCH TRAIL BIBLE CAMP A cabin leader had girls in her group from surrounding communities. She was encouraged to see them at camp as they don’t have believing families or another place to learn about Jesus. The girls, eager to read and study the Bible, asked many questions. Three committed their lives to Christ! We are eager to see how God will grow these girls and use them to impact their families.

Transforming Lives for Eternity O

ne word best describes our summer camp season: transformational! It was incredible seeing God work in the lives of campers, summer missionaries, volunteers, and families! Our discipleship work team (13–18 years old) completed a three week component of a two-year MARILYN KIRK training program. Their impact on camp was Director significant; five publicly declared their faith. New workers arrived with energy and enthusiasm, making themselves available, stepping outside comfort zones, and trusting God to do what only He can do. As our team reflected God’s goodness, it was contagious. Campers sensed a safe environment and trusted those around them, asking significant questions about faith and life so often left unsaid. They made decisions to trust and follow Jesus. Statistics show that many believers (43%) come to Christ before age twelve. Another 23% make a faith decision before they turn eighteen. We’re thankful to be part of sharing the truth of God’s Word with these young people. Camp provides opportunities for connection and creating friendships that have an impact now and in years to come. Christian community spurs us toward faith and good works! (Hebrews 10:24–25) LUSELAND BIBLE CAMP is ten minutes northwest of Luseland, SK. •

t evening snack time we asked campers, "What was your favorite part of the day?" Much to my surprise at teen camp, almost every answer was an emphatic "Chapel!" All week our speaker had expounded on our theme verse: "If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed" (John 8:36). One night he gave campers the opportunity to share their burdens and have a leader pray God's truth over them. Amazingly, most campers came forward to receive prayer. Later, one boy tearfully told me he was able to unload something that had burdened him for three years. On the last night of camp, the speaker's topic was, "Free to Hear God's Voice.” He shared how we are created to hear God's voice. A sixteen-year-old girl told us she was skeptical at first, but she later shared, "I had tried hearing from God before, but always felt unsuccessful. My imagination kept getting in the way. But that night I said to the Lord, ‘You are stronger than these other thoughts. Whatever picture I see next, I know it will be from you.’ “Instantly, all the pictures in my head quieted and I saw a simple heart. With this picture, I heard God say, ‘I love you!’” This camper shared from the stage; later, others told her how much they appreciated what she said. The freedom God gave her and many others was definitely a significant highlight of camp this summer! MADGE LAKE BIBLE CAMP is in Duck Mountain Provincial Park, SK. •

“It is important to live out our testimony daily, because how we do so proclaims loudly what we believe.”

MANITOU LAKE BIBLE CAMP

JADE WHEATON Director of Creative Programming

Live Your Testimony “

We loved you so much that we shared with you not only God’s good news but our own lives, too” (1 Thessalonians 2:8). This summer I taught a session called “Live Your Testimony” during a discipleship camp for teens. We covered topics like what a testimony is, and why we should know what to say about our faith so we can effectively share it with others. I said it is important to live out our testimony daily, because how we do so proclaims loudly what we believe. Indeed, actions do speak louder than words. Living out a loving and bold Christian testimony during (and after) camp has been one way our team has shared the good news with campers. As Director of Creative Programming, I get to intentionally shape and facilitate a fun, safe atmosphere and teach leaders how to share God’s love. We often think of chapel times creating a spiritual environment, but can’t forget key moments that come naturally— having a conversation in the meal line, comforting a homesick camper, teaching new skills, joining a game with a cabin. These natural interactions leave lasting impressions and show our leaders’ consistent Christian testimony in action. I was reminded of this when a leader said, “I had a camper who did not believe in God and only came for the fun. He had questions as the week went on and last night asked how to become a Christian.” Isn’t that awesome? Manitoba DAUPHIN BIBLE CAMP The Holy Spirit moved in hearts as the good news of Jesus was shared during chapels, cabin times, and devotions. Not only did campers turn to Jesus, but two support team members allowed God to be Lord of their lives. Numerous summer missionaries made public declarations of faith. The Gospel was proclaimed, the Holy Spirit worked, and lives were changed.

GIMLI BIBLE CAMP

Good Out of Bad L

ike the Gospel, good news often starts with bad news. Bad news arrived as I brushed my teeth on the final AMANDA PENNER night of teen camp. “Trouble in cabin 3. You’d better get Cabin Leader there quick!” I reached the cabin in time to see my camper, Lea, burst through the door and storm off in a rage. In her wake were angry, scared, and crying girls. When she returned, I stopped her outside; she could not come back inside the cabin in this state. Lea unleashed on me, swearing and spewing spiteful things of which she had no doubt been the recipient in her young life. My defensive anger melted as I looked into the stormy face of a girl who had reached the end of herself. Her outward explosion only revealed her inner needs—drug cravings and ungrieved losses. Eventually, she marched into the darkness outside camp property. I handed the situation to another leader, who sat with her on the roadside. I couldn’t sleep, so I waited outside and prayed. I could hear Lea crying—long, mournful wails from deep inside her broken heart. I prayed she would cry until all her pain and grief had drained away. I also prayed that Jesus would save her. The next morning, I saw Lea sitting alone, ashamed. I knelt and put my hands on her knees, looking past her hanging hair and hood, into her face. I spoke her name and she wept. That morning, with an open, repentant heart, Lea received Jesus Christ as Savior! With joy I watched the Spirit bear fruit in this newborn Christian as she asked forgiveness from each girl in our cabin. She had peace inside! Indeed, bad news had given way to good news.

ROSEAU RIVER BIBLE CAMP Campers were glad to be at camp and we were excited to have them! We had tons of fun playing games, doing skills, and singing wholeheartedly in chapel. What a blessing to see campers return, to watch our summer team grow spiritually, and to receive encouraging feedback from parents! This summer God encouraged us so we could encourage others. VALLEY VIEW BIBLE CAMP A number of our summer team members started their spiritual journey as campers, attending leadership programs and learning from senior team members. Now, they serve at camp! We’ve seen many former team members giving back, supporting the frontline team with time and finances. Proclaiming the Gospel produces life changes that multiply over the years in a variety of ways.

ow amazing to see God miraculously provide for urgent needs each week! Our team depended on Him for patience, energy, and unconditional love to demonstrate and share the Gospel with campers. This opened doors for questions and meaningful conversations during cabin devotions, skills, tuck time, chapel sessions, and one-on-one encounters. This summer we called on extra prayer support when we learned a girl was returning after being sent home last summer. It broke our hearts to dismiss her, but she was violent and everyone feared her angry outbursts. We prayed she would make it through an entire week this time. She did amazingly well and shared at the campfire. “I have real friends who are kind and really care about me. I was complimented ten times in one day. Usually, I never get compliments.” A highlight was Journey with God, where campers spend quiet time in God’s presence. They visited different stations around the campground to read scripture, listen to worship music, pray, or write letters. Later, many spoke of new freedom from guilt and shame, and that they were being filled with love, joy, and peace. These teens were hungering for Christ and surrendering to Him. Dan, a last-minute cabin leader for teen camp, said, “I felt complacent and didn’t plan to come, but by the end of the week, I was grateful God interrupted my plans. As our team shared God’s love, it was incredible to see lives impacted, including mine. I had no idea what God was preparing me for—my 21-year-old daughter was suddenly called to her heavenly home the following Wednesday.” Only God can bring beauty from ashes. very full-time missionary who joins One Hope Canada enrolls in an intensive, two-year credentialing program. As they are introduced to the larger mission family, each missionary gleans a better understanding of who we are and how we do ministry. The program includes custom online teaching videos and interactive assignments, where students discover our purpose, history, and important guiding standards. We equip them with practical, Gospel-sharing tools: risk management, balancing home and ministry and more, plus rolespecific ministry training. The training concludes with Equip, an in-person training conference, a one-on-one meeting with a ministry specialist, and a presentation to their ministry board. Since its inception in 2015, we have seen over sixty missionaries graduate from this program.

Meet our newest graduates! Please pray for them as they continue to learn and serve.

Jennifer Enns, Ministry Director, Torch Trail Bible Camp I’ve been involved with camp ministry since I was fifteen. In Canada, Bible camps still have the opportunity to present the good news of Jesus to children and youth. I want to be part of that in a full-time capacity.

Jade Wheaton, Director of Creative Programing, Manitou Lake Bible Camp I have loved camp since I was a kid and now I can help impact campers’ lives and disciple our team!

Darcy Milroy, Site Manager, Echo Lake Bible Camp Employment doors closed for me in Alberta following the COVID pandemic. Meanwhile, God struck my wife with a bolt of inspiration. Why not camp ministry? We are so thankful we took that step!

“They are proclaiming truth ... throughout the day.”

CAMP DORION Dorion needs a camp director. Please pray for God to send one soon. The camp has shared Jesus with children and youth in the Thunder Bay area since 1946. WILLOW SPRINGS CAMP Although she wasn’t from a Christian home and had never attended church, Caroline signed up for our Exploring the Bible elective for two consecutive weeks. We loaned her a Bible, asking if she wanted to keep it; she declined. Hungry for answers to burning questions before attending camp, she’d asked her unchurched parents for a Bible and they’d bought one. God was already working behind the scenes! MONARCH BIBLE CAMP It’s comforting to know that people from across Canada and elsewhere are aware of One Hope Canada, value its ministry, and pray. I am thankful for the mission and the lives impacted at camp by the Lord and His servants. Monarch’s small size allows for deep connections between campers and our team, and we see restoration, healing, prayer, and God’s love in action. SONSHINE BIBLE CLUBS After a three-year hiatus, SONshine Bible Clubs are returning to Sault Ste. Marie to spread Jesus’ love in the northern part of the province. We have approval to instruct in five schools with the potential for three more. We are thankful for One Hope Canada, our dedicated volunteers, and generous supporters. Together, we spread the good news, rekindle hope, and leave indelible marks on our communities.

Singing the Truth D

o you ever have a song stuck in your head? Maybe a catchy tune from the radio or a song from way back when you were a kid in Sunday school? That was the case for me this summer! Leading worship is one of my favorite parts about serving at camp. I’m so thankful we can proclaim the KATIE ELLIOTT good news of Jesus through music! Assistant Director This summer, I made it a practice to go to the chapel early, before the campers arrived. As I prepared for worship, I sang the song “I Speak Jesus” as a prayer over our session. I took time to choose music with biblically sound lyrics for our time together. Once the bell rang, campers were on their way. As they rushed into the chapel, we welcomed them with Christian dance music playing loudly over the speakers. Most campers danced and sang along as they found their seats. We started with prayer, asking God to soften hearts by the power of His word, as we proclaimed His truth in song. Singing filled the chapel with worshipful praise. Singing at camp is such a joyful experience! It’s encouraging to witness campers getting songs of truth stuck in their heads! Whether or not they recognize it, they are proclaiming truth as they sing throughout the day. In their cabins. To and from activities. And as they head home to share this truth with their families. RAINY RIVER DISTRICT MINISTRIES

Opportunities to Grow RACHEL MAST Sunflowers Bible Club

S

unflowers Bible Club started in September 2011, as an opportunity for young girls to hear the Gospel and experience freedom in Christ. What an amazing privilege to teach repentance, love, and trust in Jesus as Savior! Last year I taught Bible truths from Max Lucado’s Anxious for Nothing. The girls learned that fear and anxiety can consume us as Satan tries to steal hope and joy. But when we give the Lord our cares and requests, He gives peace and comfort. Many girls memorized Philippians 4:6–7; I pray they will seek peace from Jesus Christ, rather than from the world. It’s been an exciting year. In September I married Brock Peters, moved to Manitoba, and am excited to continue serving with One Hope Canada. As a going-away present at the last Sunflowers gathering, my girls gave me a binder of encouraging notes. One wrote: “I appreciate all the time it must have taken to keep teaching us. You were a big part of my spiritual growth and I don’t think I would be where I am without you. I will miss it all.” Others: “Thank you for everything you did to teach us more about God” and “Thank you for all you’ve done to help us grow in the faith. It means a lot!” Please pray that God will provide someone to lead this special ministry so many more girls can experience a saving faith in Jesus Christ. I’m glad I can share the Gospel and disciple wherever God leads. Thank you for your prayers. RAINY RIVER DISTRICT MINISTRIES serves communities in northwestern Ontario. • 888-960-2580

Québec  CAMP DES îLES A camper who was with us for several camping sessions had a difficult time. On the last day, I was supervising him indoors, as he did not behave safely elsewhere. He was coloring a booklet outlining the Gospel when our chapel speaker approached and explained the Gospel simply. I added a few words, and the camper prayed for Jesus to enter his life! What a blessing to see what God can do in young hearts!

I

t was just another night of chapel. We’d gathered together—the well-seasoned alongside those who hadn’t heard—to learn about Jesus and His goodness. Joyful voices sang, attentive ears listened, and eager hearts searched for the One who saves. In the crowd sat someone who had seen the darkest of days. She had once felt cut off, far from all hope, until she came to camp. There, a spark of hope was kindled and light filled her soul. Over the weeks and months, God worked in her life, drawing her closer to Himself. She became a soul saved, a life changed. Now, years later, she stood tall in the same chapel where that little spark was first ignited, shining her light for those still in darkness and looking for a way out. As she led in worship and in prayer, it was such a testimony to the hope and new life found in Jesus—freedom for the captives. Her story reminds me of Jesus’ words: “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5: 14–16). During the summer Daryk and Nicole serve at Fair Haven Bible Camp in New Carlisle, QC. The rest of the year they share Jesus throughout the Gaspésie region. CAPE BRETON BIBLE CAMP

“God does immeasurably more than we ask or think.”

Atlantic Canada  HAMPTON BIBLE CAMP We sometimes wondered if we would have enough people to run camp (cooks, cabin leaders, day camp assistants, etc.). We worried too soon; God faithfully provided at the right time. With the team in place, we could focus on the most important thing: teaching children about Jesus! We praise God for several children—returnees and first-time campers—who responded by putting their faith in Him!  MIRAMICHI BIBLE CAMP “Angela, you know how you say God always keeps His promises? I don’t know if that’s true.” Parker felt safe asking, so I reminded him that God doesn’t promise our lives will be easy, but that He walks with us in the hard times. I love camp ministry—it’s a safe place for children to wrestle through big faith questions!

CAPE BRETON BIBLE CAMP

Impact Beyond the Summer C

amp is demanding in many ways but God has been faithful to Cape Breton’s ministry for more than seventy-five years. This summer was no exception. We hosted 299 kids and young adults; twelve put their trust in Jesus. We had more opportunities for NATHAN MACISAAC discipleship, an area we’d like to expand. Director Last summer, a girl who became a Christian at camp told her family about Jesus and her mom became a Christian. Praise God, camp ministry makes an impact beyond the summer. This summer, her younger sister came to know the Lord. God does immeasurably more than we ask or think.

 NEW FOUND LIFE BIBLE CAMP As we looked at a brightly colored VBS poster featuring several children, someone asked, “Do you recognize these kids?” Our hearts rejoiced to see new faces mixed with familiar ones. The new VBS program at Norris Arm Salvation Army church was successful. Non-churched parents came with the youngsters and listened attentively to the Bible lessons. Although no one publicly declared a faith decision, we know God’s Word impacted lives.  SANDY COVE BIBLE CAMP You never know what a casual conversation might reveal when you proclaim the good news. During middle school camp, our Bible teacher approached a camper during Treat Hut, asking our summer theme question (also a question Jesus asked): “Who do you say I am?” The camper replied that he believed in Jesus, who is the Savior. The speaker asked when he came to this realization, and the boy told him, “This week at camp!”

lthough I’ve been part of Blomidon Bible Camp for years, having worked here in the past, this year truly opened my eyes to the camp’s great opportunities. Each week is different, yet rewarding. It’s amazing to watch kids return year after year, develop friendships, grow in their love for brothers and sisters in Christ, and willingly learn what God has done for them. Over the years it also impacted me as I created lasting friendships, developed leadership skills, and saw my relationship with Jesus blossom. During teen week this year I was privileged to lead a girls’ cabin. Our awesome God brought the girls closer to Himself and got them thinking. As the week progressed, they studied God’s Word and asked great questions. I’m thankful God gave me the opportunity to speak into their lives. It was what my spirit needed. I connected more deeply with God and gained insights from fellow believers. Most rewarding: watching God work in individuals. Ongoing Story S

WILMER LOEWEN AND HIS WIFE, MARILYN, SERVED WITH CANADIAN SUNDAY SCHOOL MISSION (ONE HOPE CANADA) FROM 1974 TO 2018, LEADING CAMP AND COMMUNIT Y MINISTRY IN QUEBEC.

tory One: Some years ago, it was Sunday morning between camps; I was exhausted and discouraged. The phone rang. It was a former camp worker. “I felt led to call you with a word of encouragement,” she said. “Remember Sandy? She attends our church and recently shared some spiritual struggles. She made this comment: ‘One thing I still cling to: I made a commitment to follow Christ at Camp Livingstone several years ago and I’ve never let go of that!’” Years later, as retirees, we visited family camp and guess what? Sandy was there with her family. Her story is ongoing! Several years ago she was baptized at camp, and visiting the camp is her yearly highlight. This summer her daughter served on the camp team. Story Two: Years ago a seven-year-old boy—let’s call him Russell—and his younger brother came to family camp from foster care. Youth Protection considered camp a safe place for the boys to be with their father, who was dealing with heroin addiction. Recently, Russell, now thirty-five, spent a week in our home. He was between jobs and lacked purpose and direction. We had several conversations about the Gospel and scriptural truths and, for the first time in years, he attended church with us! Even in retirement, we repeatedly see that God called us, not to a job, but to a ministry of proclaiming the good news of freedom in Christ, often with former campers! I’m reminded of Philippians 1:6: “Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
