oming into summer, we did not know what to expect. Health restrictions across the country made the thought of in-person ministry to children seem impossible. Yet, in spite of the uncertainty, our team of 140 year-round missionaries hoped for the best and planned for the unexpected. It required unprecedented mental and emotional toughness. By the beginning of July, in-person day camp ministry was permitted in every province, with several allowing overnight camps. Winter and spring planning and hard work paid off as we launched into ministry, maximizing opportunities from coast to coast to tell more than 9,880 boys and girls about Jesus. Eleven-year-old Grace is one such camper. The night before camp, her parents warned her that she would hear a lot about a god. They said they didn't believe there was a God, but she should still go because camp is a great way to have fun. “Just be sure to ignore anything they teach from a book they’ll call the Bible,” they said. From day one Grace loved camp and was captivated by chapel messages about Jesus. During the week, as she learned more about who Jesus is and what He did for her, she made a profession of faith and decided to follow Him. At the closing chapel session, the camp speaker conducted a Q&A with campers as they sat next to their parents. When the speaker asked, “Who can explain what salvation is?”, Grace promptly stood and explained the Gospel, with her mom by her side. Grace’s story and that of many, many others is the lifeblood of every One Hope Canada camp—last year, this year, and next year. Over half our campers come from homes that know nothing about Jesus, the Bible, or true Christianity. These past months demonstrate yet again that God is ready and able to exceed our expectations. Despite doubt and uncertainty for the upcoming season, we want to live with the great expectation that Jesus still seeks lost sheep, welcomes prodigals, and transforms lives.

Material Things
n 1927, when Canadian Sunday School Mission (CSSM) founder J. Lloyd Hunter was planning the mission’s first Bible memory contest, he presented the project to a Bible class attended by business women at the Winnipeg Bible Institute (now Providence College). Muriel Drummond Taylor took on the project and the contest led to the development of Bible camps, the reward for completing the contest. Muriel was hired as CSSM’s first general secretary in May 1929. She felt strongly that children needed to know the Bible, and in 1931 developed the Bible Correspondence Course, a sequel to the Bible Memory Contest, for children wanting to return to camp. She wrote three courses, turning the contest into a four-year program. Her passion for children and the Bible caused Muriel concern about the lack of follow-up campers received throughout the year. Her solution was to develop the Best Book Club, a series of correspondence courses focused on scripture memorization, Bible stories, and biblical principles applied directly to children’s lives. The club ran for close to fifty years; at its peak, almost 10,000 correspondence lessons were mailed monthly to
children who had been reached through summer camps and vacation Bible schools. Although Muriel retired from secretarial work in January 1951, she continued working for the mission as publicity director. Olive Carmichael, a close friend who had worked closely with Muriel since 1938, filled the position of secretary. Muriel died in 1972 at age ninety-two. By all accounts, she felt greatly fulfilled in her life and work with CSSM. In her own words to Olive: “in my old age I have . . . far more than material things . . . and you are headed the same way. You’ll not be sorry thirty or forty years from now that you lived for more than the values of this life.” DANICA GEDDERT served with One Hope Canada in the Winnipeg office this summer.

Missionary Profile
Serving a God who answers Twenty-two years ago I joined Canadian Sunday School Mission (CSSM) as a full-time missionary. As I stepped into the public relations role previously filled by Jack Klassen for twenty-five years, I knew I had big shoes to fill! But God had been preparing me. As I reflect on my life’s journey, one theme keeps appearing—answered prayer.
The Birth of Christian Radio Ever since my days at Winnipeg Bible College, now Providence University College, friends had encouraged me to pursue a career in radio. In 1993, six years before joining CSSM as a full-time missionary, I was studying business administration at Red River College in Winnipeg. I also found myself working as a disc jockey at Red River College’s in-house radio station.

Prayer At the time, Canada’s broadcasting laws did not allow for the operation of Christian radio stations. Several movers and shakers in Winnipeg and across Canada petitioned God and lobbied the CRTC (the governing body over Canada’s broadcasting laws) to change that policy. I joined the prayer effort, especially after eighteenwheeling across the US and being tremendously encouraged by Christian radio there. On the day of my last college exam, June 3, 1993, the CRTC changed the laws to allow Christian stations to operate. I woke up the next morning rejoicing that my college days were done—and then heard the exciting news that Canada’s broadcasting laws had changed. What an answer to prayer! Christian stations are now on the air across the country. The development of faith-based stations also paved the way for the 2001 launch of Heart of the South, the Southern Gospel radio show which I host.

In April, Harold and his wife Natalie welcomed a long-awaited daughter, Evangeline Hannah Doralyn, into their family— another answer to prayer!
Heart of the South Launches Heart of the South began as a one-hour program on three stations in Manitoba. It expanded to two hours by the end of 2001, and then began to air on an Alberta station (AM1140) in 2005. Around that time, the book The Prayer of Jabez was quite popular. I prayed that God would “expand my territory” of ministry. He answered my prayer in the years that followed. Heart of the South expanded to a Southern Gospel radio station (www.lighthousefm.ca) in Nipawin, Saskatchewan in 2007, and then to two Golden West community radio stations in Saskatchewan (CKSW– Swift Current and CJSN–Shaunavon) later that year. This was followed by CKVN, a new Christian station in Lethbridge and a vast network of community radio stations (www.ciamradio.com) a few years later. CIAM Radio currently airs in twenty-six communities, including the Northwest Territories. In the following years, Heart of the South was picked up by stations in Portage la Prairie (CFRY 920), Sudbury (KFM), International Falls and Warroad (KXBR in Minnesota), and Belize. Most recently, Heart of the South was added to the programming lineup of Eagle Wings radio, an online station managed by Gord Lang, husband of Roseann, CSSM’s former bookkeeper. Currently, Heart of the South airs weekly on approximately forty stations in Canada, the US, and Belize. In exchange, stations promote the work and mission of One Hope Canada, its camps, and community ministries.

“God had another plan for so many kids here in the Cariboo.”
CAMP AMASA After almost two years without ministry, we were excited to offer overnight camping. But with wildfires raging in the area, we were blanketed with a thick layer of smoke. At camp I was reminded again of Matthew 7:7, “Ask and it will be given to you.” We prayed for the smoke to abate and God enabled us to see the mountains, which we had not seen for weeks, plus clouds and blue skies! ECHO LAKE BIBLE CAMP "I have one major request," began a single mom during family camp. "Can you please do this again next year?" Although youth camps were beyond our reach, our desire to meet community needs and share the Gospel was not. By God's grace we tried a new ministry format to bless families of many shapes and sizes. Limitations encouraged new possibilities, which we are eager to implement in future summers! NESS LAKE BIBLE CAMP Calum came as a leader in training this summer, expecting to stay two weeks. He had never shared the Gospel, but learned how and shared it with a camper during the first week. When Calum asked the camper if he wanted to receive God’s free gift of salvation, the camper said yes. Calum was shocked! At our end-of-week meeting, his face radiated joy. Realizing he could play a role in God’s Kingdom, Calum stayed most of the summer. HOPE BAY BIBLE CAMP God blessed us with a new program director, Shaun Schaffrick, his wife Niki, and their children, Eleanor and William, enabling us to run day camps for our island’s children. COVID restrictions lifted, making camp feel more normal. Heartfelt worship and youthful laughter from our first church youth group rental filled us with joy, and installing a new metal roof on our dining hall, planting gardens, starting a chicken run, and including bunnies enriched the camping experience.

LAKE OF THE TREES BIBLE CAMP
Finding Our Identity in Jesus JANETTE BLAHUT Program Director
T
his year our team at Lake of the Trees encountered a cultural shift in campers. During the lockdowns and separation from peers and family in past months, campers have been strongly influenced by social media and exposed to many ideas about identity and self. At camp we saw a negative shift in their self-confidence, in their ability to communicate emotions, and in identity confusion. As a team we dug deep into God’s Word, realizing we were unprepared for the conversations we would encounter each week. We had never seen this kind of influence on such a large scale or such an acute need for Jesus to meet these campers in their struggles. Summer became a season of teaching campers about their true identity in Jesus. One young teen struggled with his sexual identity and self-image. His expectation in coming to camp was that Jesus would never accept him. After hearing several chapel messages and receiving love from his cabin leaders, he discovered that Jesus loved him. He accepted Jesus into his life that week! His journey may not be easy but his cabin leaders have committed to walking with him, staying in touch, and praying for him over this next year. God definitely exceeded my expectations for the summer. I was trusting God for full camps, but my faith was small. God had another plan for so many kids here in the Cariboo.

t is always easier to grumble than to joyfully expect what God will do. Scripture reminds us to trust God, as our team of eight summer missionaries chose to do, and our expectations were more than fulfilled. When restrictions lifted, our team was excited about the possibility of campers staying overnight—the real camping experience! A month before opening, Maple Springs made the scary decision to offer overnight camp, in addition to day camp and shuttle-to-camp options. On opening day, our dusty field was filled with cars. People lined up at our little circus tents for registration. Some who pre-registered for day camp, showed up with luggage for overnight camp but had forgotten to tell us of their changed plans. Other children brought only a backpack for the day. Parents were asking where to pick up their campers. In the middle of all this, our bus arrived—some campers with bedding, others intending to return on the shuttle. For hours that week our office manager was on the phone. Some campers, having rarely left their homes in over a year, were homesick and wanted to go home at night. Others showed up on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday with luggage, wanting to stay overnight. A logistical nightmare. Were we crazy to offer so many options? But hope does not disappoint, and in that first week, sixty amazing kids, loved by their leaders, heard the incredible news of Jesus. Over time things became easier. Our leaders never complained about walks up the steep hill to the pickup point, the challenge of leading campers, or the many phone calls and emails. We hosted more than 500 campers over eight weeks. Most campers stayed overnight for the week they were on site. Many lives were changed for eternity! Ephesians 5:16 says, “Make the most of every opportunity.” By living with great expectations, we saw opportunities around us where God was already at work.

Alberta BEAR LAKE BIBLE CAMP Our expectation this summer: four weeks of day camp with forty campers per week. Pandemic limitations called for smaller camps and fewer staff, but shortly before camp startup, we got permission for overnight camps with few restrictions. We opened registration for two weeks of overnight camp with leaders for two cabins of boys and two of girls—thirty-two campers compared to our usual ninety-six. Then the Lord brought ten qualified cabin leaders, allowing forty extra campers to hear the life-changing truth of the Gospel! CAMP SILVERSIDES Unforeseen circumstances led to a critical last minute change in camp directors in early June. God's provision of Katie Lutz as interim director was such a tremendous blessing. In the face of this summer’s unique challenges, Katie’s skill set allowed several weeks of day camp where many children heard the Gospel! DAVID THOMPSON BIBLE CAMP On the first morning of off-site day camp, we described what the week would look like. During chapel, when we mentioned learning about Jesus Christ, one camper immediately told us we were swearing by saying, “Jesus Christ”. When we explained who Jesus is, she was surprised, as she had never heard this before. She asked many great questions during the week and accepted Christ as Lord and Savior on the final morning. JOY CAMP/JOY CHAPEL A climbing wall, giant swing, rock painting, and meals provided seventyone adults with disabilities muchneeded time together at Joy Camp this summer. Many drew near to the One from whom our expectations come (Psalm 62:5). One unburdened his heart to a summer missionary and they prayed together. Another summoned up courage to sing a special song about the Lord and a few campers audibly responded in prayer to receive Christ during chapel.

ocky Mountain House, Brightview Church, and Millet—where we hoped to run day camps this summer—stretch across 180 kilometers of beautiful central Alberta. In early spring I planned a bicycle tour of the area to promote our new mobile day camps. Two weeks prior, I spent a total of about four hours training. My expectations were low, because only three children attended the first Millet day camp in 2019. Two hours into the tour, down the road from Rocky Mountain House, I was already sore. By noon, the only way to prevent overheating was to keep pedaling and let the breeze cool me. Sixteen long and tiring hours later, the One Accord Centre in Millet finally came into view. As summer approached, our volunteer board struggled to find planning and preparation time. But as COVID restrictions lifted and camp dates drew near, a few registrations trickled in and we managed to finalize our program. Two of the three day camps had nearly more children than our volunteers or space could manage. We praise God for providing far beyond our expectations!

Saskatchewan DALLAS VALLEY RANCH CAMP It had been a hard day for Samuel, a camper who came from a difficult background. His cabin leader, Tyler, asked if he would like to hear some Bible stories, something that had helped soothe Samuel in the past. At first Samuel refused, but when he saw Tyler fidgeting with the zipper on his backpack, Samuel finally broke the silence: “It's not in that pocket.” “What’s not in that pocket?” asked Tyler. “My Bible,” said Samuel. “It's in the other pocket.” Tyler pulled out Samuel’s Bible, opening it to Psalm 23: “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing . . .” Tyler read through the psalm and they continued to talk about the Good Shepherd.

ESTEVAN BIBLE CAMP
A Powerful Impact A
s summer neared, our anticipation grew at Estevan Bible Camp and we wondered how God would work this year. He blessed us above and beyond our expectations. Squirt and Junior day camps were amazing and filled to capacity as in past years. Evening and SHAWN overnight camps were available for teens; teen BISSONNETTE attendance doubled with some joining as late Assistant Camp as the evening before camp started. Director The Lord blessed us with amazing weather. We lost count of how many times poor weather was forecast when we planned for outdoor skills, wide games, or outdoor chapel. Nearly every time, the rain stopped just before our planned activity, and once we finished, it returned. God also blessed us by providing great speakers in His time and way. We had a speaker lined up for nearly every camp, when our teen camp speaker’s son was involved in a serious farming accident several weeks before the camp started. Recovery time was potentially months. Thankfully, the family returned home about a week before teen camp and our teens were powerfully impacted by the speaker’s meaningful stories of what he had learned in this time of depending on God. KENOSEE LAKE BIBLE CAMP After a year of limited community, missionaries and campers were ready to grow in their faith together. The summer provided an opportunity for faith renewal and regeneration, as together we witnessed why it is good to be in community with believers. As one team member said, "I have a joy at camp I haven't felt in a long time." LUSELAND BIBLE CAMP One camper prayed, “God, You are my one love! I’m so happy to be here.” We felt that same thankfulness to again host overnight camps for excited campers! It’s the mix of friends, games, skills, great meals, and talking about important things, life-changing things! Chapel is a highlight for many, and talk times provide opportunity to ask questions such as: “What does that verse mean to us today? How can we follow Jesus and live for Him in 2021?” MADGE LAKE BIBLE CAMP We have a ranch camp where campers tent in the bush. A cabin leader had to get stitches, wind was messing with the horses, several campers were anxious and refusing to ride. We arrived back at the camp three hours later than expected, but in the midst of the confusion, God was on the move—during chapel time, the Holy Spirit moved powerfully. The kids sang their hearts out and prayed for each other for hours! MANITOU LAKE BIBLE CAMP We didn’t know what this summer would hold, but we knew God would do great things! Early on, we were planning for day camps, camps in tents, extreme skill options, and family camp. When overnight camps became an option, we were thrilled, so we decided to run them in addition to the camps originally offered. It was a new opportunity to be creative and partner locally with community churches that hosted our day camps! RANGER LAKE BIBLE CAMP This summer we noticed our campers’ increased attentiveness in chapel, compared to past summers. In their words: "Chapel really helped me to understand things. I never used to pray every night and never had a Bible. Now I have a Bible.” “Before camp I really struggled with confidence and my identity. Chapel helped me to realize that God loves me no matter what I look like." We are grateful for many stories like these and look forward to summer 2022.

Jesus Changes Everything B JENNIFER ENNS Ministry Director
efore we knew what summer would hold, we planned two weeks of teen canoe trips on the Churchill River system. There were eleven of us on the trip; five adults as well as six campers who had all attended TTBC in previous years. It was good to see them again. What a blast learning different canoe strokes and testing our knowledge as we headed from our campsite for day trips upriver. We fished, swam, and cooked delicious food over campfires. It was good being unplugged, surrounded by God’s beautiful creation. As leaders, we presented devotionals, but it was tough to gauge where the youth were spiritually. We presented the Gospel and how believing in Jesus changes everything. Several were already Christians and we had encouraging conversations with them. Others seemed disinterested in chapel times or intentionally spiritual questions. We prayed God would use this trip to show them how amazing, powerful, and loving He is. In the midst of all the fun, the trip had its share of adventure: forest fires, curious bears, and the focus it takes to master rapids. We constantly asked God to keep us safe. Traveling back to camp, I asked what they had learned about God. They said, “God created everything . . . I learned that God protects . . . I can trust Him.” We were encouraged that our young adventurers tangibly saw God answer prayers every day. I know He was at work and seeds were planted. For that we are thankful. his past summer was a series of lessons on how God provides us with those we need when we need them. It was also a testament to the fact that His strength is sufficient when we are weak. We were so thankful we could run overnight camp, and thrilled to see many campers who had never been to camp before. Parents were looking for any activity for kids after a winter of limited activities. God caught our attention during leader training while we practiced canoe rescues. The instructor made his canoe the dry canoe, where we could place anything we didn’t want getting wet. One team member trustingly placed her $800 Apple Watch in his safekeeping. But the instructor forgot his was the dry canoe and used it to illustrate pulling someone from the water into a canoe, dumping every dry item overboard. The watch owner was understandably upset, so the instructor and I tried diving for her watch. We went to the general location, put on goggles, and prayed, “God if you could make a lost axe head float in the Bible, help us see this watch.” I dove twelve feet and was shocked to see it directly in front of me. I came up feeling great relief at not having to replace an expensive watch because God sees, cares, and provides.

rom the day they first set foot on camp property, we want our full-time missionaries to realize there is more. So we introduce them to the bigger family that is One Hope Canada. Their eyes are opened to the big picture through our credentialing program. Through teaching videos and interactive assignments at our online training centre, new missionaries discover our purpose, history, and important standards that guide us. We also equip them with common ministry skills such as risk management and balancing home and ministry. After orientation, these men and women choose from an extensive collection of electives to equip them in their specific roles. Their two-year credentialing process is rounded out with the last of twenty modules. They attend a nationwide Equip conference, meet one-on-one with a ministry specialist, and make a presentation to their camp board. Since 2015, we have seen more than fifty missionaries graduate from our credentialing program.
Meet seven of our most recent graduates. 14
SUMMER/FALL 2021
Randal Schroeder serves at Dallas Valley Ranch Camp, just north of Regina, as maintenance director. He graduated in November 2020. He chose to serve at Dallas Valley because of the Gospel. “God made a way for salvation,” he said, “and by His grace I can use His gifts to provide campers with the good news of salvation through Jesus.” Dayna Penson graduated from credentialing in May 2021 and has served as program director at Ness Lake Bible Camp since 2019, reaching children in the Prince George area. She chose this path in ministry because camping made such a big impact on her life. “I want to provide the same joy and entertainment with games, activities, and schedules that kept me coming back year after year.” Jared Kehler serves as facility manager at Valley View Bible Camp south of Brandon. A 2021 grad of the credentialing program, Jared chose this path in ministry because he was looking for a change in life and this role fit his personality and skill set. Kelly Rempel is the director of creative communications with our Ministry Resource Centre in Winnipeg. She completed credentialing in March 2021. “I love using my skills to assist our frontline missionaries and communicate with supporters as we share Jesus’ love with kids across the country.”
Dylan Mari serves as assistant facility director at Maple Springs Bible Camp in Peachland, BC. He graduated in May 2020 and describes his reason for serving with a Bible verse: "If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also" (John 12:26). He believes Jesus is working at camp and wants to work with Him. Sophie Roy serves at Camp Livingstone, one of two One Hope Canada camps in Quebec. She graduated in March 2021 and directs camper follow-up and discipleship in the southwest corner of the province.
Kendra Thiessen completed her credentialing in September 2021. She serves at Madge Lake Bible Camp in eastern Saskatchewan as program director and does camper follow-up and promotion. She loves being part of what God is doing in kids and teens through camp ministry!
Please pray for our new missionaries, that God would give them longevity and a desire to continue learning well after their credentialing is complete. ROLAND MCQUADE serves as One Hope Canada’s credentialing and online training coordinator.

Manitoba DAUPHIN BIBLE CAMP Horse camp. What a great outreach. Kids love horses so they come to camp and at camp they hear the Gospel. Roughly seventy-five per cent of these campers do not regularly attend church or receive any Gospelcentered teaching. Some heard about Jesus for the first time this summer. Kids who may have not come to overnight camp heard about Him through our day camps.

GIMLI BIBLE CAMP One young cabin leader needed a week off to vacation with his family, so I helped to take charge of his two young campers. They were good kids, but exhausted me by the end of the day I spent with them. The next week they were very excited to have their young leader back and I (humbly) experienced again how much campers want and need good role models. These ten-yearolds aspire to be Christians like that young teen, not like some grandpa—no matter how attentive I might have been. Isn’t it so true that our faith is caught more than taught! Campers hear the Word, but learn to live it by watching us. (Don Roe) VALLEY VIEW BIBLE CAMP We were blessed with another group of amazing young people who came alongside to make camp happen. This year we noticed so many with servant hearts. We always say camp life is a picture of what the church in Acts may have looked like. The bond of community runs deep: we live together, eat together, serve together, work through differences, challenge each other, and share burdens. Not an easy life, yet it blesses our hearts to watch the team come together, enjoy each other's company, and serve Christ.

urtle Mountain Bible Camp offered full day camps, providing opportunities to build relationships: more time for campers to talk, be heard, and loved while experiencing fun and community. In our Ignite evening programs, youth were eager to ask questions as we navigated topics such as loneliness, anxiety, why following Jesus is worth it, and why faith and hope are so important. A highlight: seeing many teens interested in the Disciples In Training program so they could serve at camp next summer. A few other reflections from the summer: • God reminded me anew of my dependence on Him. • Every morning He provided what was needed each day, while giving wisdom to navigate difficult situations. • I experienced fun, peace, assurance, and the ability to rejoice in struggles, as our mission was filled with joy and wonder. • He stretched me to let go and allow my team to take hold of the program. • He gave an immense appreciation for my colleagues and summer missionaries who shared the summer and their hearts with me. What a privilege to share Christ and Him crucified, to show love to those we encountered, and in turn see the Gospel profoundly impacting lives. In times of adversity, we experienced overwhelming provision and strength from God as He guided. One new volunteer, prior to camp, had no intention of continuing to live. That person’s testimony, among others, revealed how God was at work before, during, and after camp. Having the new facility operational, and furthering the Gospel through family camping, on-site Joy Camp, and rental groups was amazing. God’s presence was evident! The summer was fruitful, lives were changed, and we continue to celebrate the ever-present and unchanging hope we have in Christ!

his was a season of joy and a season of sorrow. As the end of June approached, we had no idea how ongoing COVID restrictions would affect us. Planning was exasperating, but not wasted. We decided on day camps, which attracted 422 campers, many first-timers. They were excited to build friendships, explore their faith, and experience new opportunities in a safe and secure environment with caring staff. August arrived, and with it news that overnight camps were allowed in Manitoba. Green light! To repeat a phrase often used by the summer team, “Let’s go!” We planned, re-planned, and tweaked plans again, to offer campers a positive overnight experience. Then, on the afternoon of August 8, everything changed. A highway accident claimed the lives of Sophie (17) and Acacia Goertzen (15), daughters of our camp director, Duane, and his wife, Sylvia. We know the girls now see Jesus face-to-face, but it has been so difficult. Sophie and Acacia were wonderful girls who built relationships with many. Even while we grieved, we knew Sophie and Acacia’s desire would be for us to finish the summer well. We rallied solely on the prayers of family and friends, and gathered the summer team to continue the ministry dearest to Sophie and Acacia’s hearts—to tell others about Jesus. This summer our theme verse was Luke 10:27, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and love your neighbor as yourself.” We are so thankful for the speakers, volunteers, and summer staff who made this summer possible. And we are thankful for continued prayers for Duane and Sylvia and their family, and for the Roseau River Bible Camp team.

“With the Lord’s provision of leaders on short notice, we enjoyed clay slide swimming, tower climbing, archery, and canoeing.”
GALILEAN BIBLE CAMP As our wilderness camp begins, nerves kick in. Will I remember how to interact socially? Twenty girls begin to settle in and I think, “What does God have planned for this week?” All praise to Him who is always good. He greatly exceeded my expectations and transformed hearts by the Holy Spirit’s power! He provided deep fellowship for campers who had been apart for over a year! (Katie Elliott) MONARCH BIBLE CAMP God blessed us in our first week. We had brothers who struggled to get along, mostly with each other. They had mean streaks and pushed each other’s buttons. When they asked the Lord into their lives, we saw a change in their faces and a drastic shift in behavior. They took on the role of helping younger campers and showing brotherly love. RAINY RIVER DISTRICT MINISTRIES Throughout the COVID era, we have sought to serve with great expectations. Our resilience was noticed and someone wrote: “I am so encouraged by how you maintain a what-we-can-do attitude in the midst of this pandemic! It's so easy to get on the hamster wheel of thinking about and discussing all we can't do. Thanks for being a voice to the contrary!” Pray that we will anticipate what we can do even more in the days ahead, doing it all for Jesus. SONSHINE BIBLE CLUBS We continue to wait and look forward with great expectation to the start of clubs. With children in school, we are one step closer but have not received approval from the school board, as after school programs are still on hold. Please continue to pray for muchneeded volunteers and open doors. We wait with eager anticipation for the Lord’s perfect timing and will.
DORION BIBLE CAMP
Celebrating an “In-tents” Summer T
his summer, Dorion Bible Camp hosted boys and girls desperate to be outdoors, chatting with friends from summers past, enjoying games, and learning more about the Bible. Our outdoor chapel, a borrowed hunting tent, accommodated daily Bible teaching sessions, rain or shine. CHARLES SNELL With the Lord’s provision of leaders on short Site Director notice, we enjoyed clay slide swimming, tower climbing, archery, and canoeing, where some preferred having more water in the canoe than out. Long-time volunteer, Kevin Pollock: “When I came to the camp, a young boy named Cayden asked if I remembered canoeing with him at Round Lake and hiking into Atik Lake in 2019. I did remember that contact with Cayden, but retired from canoeing and cabin leading at Round Lake that year. But Cayden wanted to team up with me again, both to and from Coldwater Creek. What are the chances of bumping into a former canoe camper from another camp and canoeing together again? Obviously, God was behind it and I was blessed by the time spent with him.” Near the end of camp, gale force winds blew in, threatening to uproot many tents. When a volunteer leader was asked how he rated his camping experience this summer he replied, ‘It was in-tents’.” DORION BIBLE CAMP www.campdorion.com • 807 857 2331 •

fter seventeen years as a camper and team member at Willow Springs, I will never again take for granted that special end-of-summer feeling—pure joy, yet never wanting camp to end. The feeling you get at the last campfire when your wrist is covered with friendship bracelets, your Bible has been well used, and your voice is cracked from too many cabin cheers. You look at the sixty kids singing their hearts out for Jesus and a tender, unfathomable feeling engulfs you. Nothing compares. As I look over the last year and a half, when our camp was closed to campers due to the pandemic, I realize how much I took it for granted until it was gone. I am so grateful God carried us through these difficult times, even when we had to put overnight camping on hold. The camp gate was closed, God's Kingdom was not. We had the incredible opportunity of offering brand new virtual programs that we will keep in place when the pandemic is over. Virtual Bible studies, game nights, mentorship programs, and pen pal programs were some of the new things created during the pandemic. We made our iconic Willow Springs Camp Barn better for campers. It already housed the chapel, dining hall, rec area, inside gym, and washrooms, but now includes a craft studio and bike shop! Generous donors helped raise $40,000 over the last two years to update and improve this amazing facility. Definitely the Lord’s provision! This pandemic has reminded us of the importance of friends, family, time together, time outside, and time for fun. It takes losing something to understand its true value. We’re excited about summer 2022, never taking for granted the opportunities summer camp brings to encounter Jesus, have fun, and find community. AN UPDATE ON ONE HOPE CANADA MINISTRY PROJECTS
I
n recent editions of Canada’s Hope, we highlighted three new ministry initiatives of One Hope Canada, each strategically focused: training One Hope Canada missionaries, year-round discipleship with children, and advancing children’s ministry in Quebec’s heart language. Here is the latest on each project.
The Good News Story thegoodnewsstory.com One Hope Canada has partnered with Grace Story Team, a faith-based media ministry based in Warman, Saskatchewan, and Grace Fellowship (Saskatoon) to produce The Good News Story, a brand new video-based Bible study. This free digital resource, which includes fourteen professionally produced videos and an illustrated study guide, went live October 13. Material can be downloaded at thegoodnewsstory.com.
22
SUMMER/FALL 2021
The series is a history-spanning narrative of redemption from Genesis to Revelation that aims to deepen participants’ love for God’s Word, His Son, and His mission. Host Murray McLellan (Grace Fellowship) unpacks the unfolding story of the Gospel in seven scenes, focusing on the ongoing revelation of Jesus throughout the Bible. An introduction to the Gospel for those who are journeying toward faith, as well as a tool for equipping believers to live out the Gospel each day, The Good News Story can be used in church settings, small group studies or individually. The material will also be used as a training resource for One Hope Canada missionaries.
Les Pourquoi de la Foi The Big Questions About the Christian Faith This summer, One Hope Canada Quebec directors JeanSébastien Morin and Katie Peach were able to field test material that will be used with Les Pourquoi de la Foi, a French language, video-based discipleship tool for pre-teens and teens. “I was talking with a mother who was saying that nothing ever "stuck" with her 14-year-old boy,” says Jean-Sébastien of an encounter at a family camp. “After our evening session talking about the existence of God, he came back to his cabin enthusiastically saying, "Mom, It's all true! Christianity is true." Les Pourquoi de la Foi will include twenty-six high quality, twenty-minute episodes (thirteen for pre-teens, and thirteen for teens). Each episode will address the big questions of Christian faith with a blend of expert interviews, animation, humor, and cultural connections. Curriculum kits also include a study guide and a parent/teacher handbook. To date, donor gifts have covered more than 78% of the funds for the $85,000 project. Script writing is well under way for six of the modules and Jean-Sébastien and Katie are meeting with technicians, camera and studio crew, and animators, to find the right people for the team.
Faith Spark App faithsparkapp.com Originally designed as an app for camper follow up, Faith Spark has grown over the past year to become a discipleship platform for children’s ministry organizations across North America. The app enables ministry leaders to safely stay connected with their pre-teens through in-app live streaming, group chats, a virtual question box for kids to ask questions about faith, life and God, and leader-created quizzes. The past months have seen a fresh look for the website, as well as the addition of new app features such as a one-to-one chat option. This feature allows students to message leaders privately, giving opportunity to continue conversations away from the larger group setting. (These messages are conducted in a safe, secure environment; all chats are saved and can be viewed by administrators at any time.) Camp ministry follow-up and discipleship is still a big priority for Faith Spark; there were more than 1,400 active users of the app during the summer. In the coming year, the Faith Spark team will continue to improve current features and add new ones, as well as promoting the app to camps and like-minded ministries across Canada and the U.S.

Québec CAMP LIVINGSTONE For nine weeks our young team sacrificed hugs, outside visits, and family time to live in a physically distanced world for the sake of community families. We showed love, faith, and hope through day camps, family camps, and an overnight teen camp. How could we not marvel at the rewarding and sustaining love of Christ when we decided to do hard things for the benefit of others. FAIR HAVEN BIBLE CAMP— GASPESIE What a dreary day. We were catching the tail end of Hurricane Elsa and the forecast offered no hope for going outdoors. Then a junior cabin leader announced he was going to pray for the rain to stop. Soon we were enjoying a sunbathed bay as it reflected a bright blue sky. God had answered. Others began praying—for healing, provision, and even a hair dryer! Soon everyone was talking about what God had done. As for this year, we expectantly wait on our faithful Lord.

SUMMER/FALL 2021
t’s Friday morning, the first day of staff training. Sam walks in, avoiding eye contact with most people, giving a quick wave as his only response to our warm hellos. He sits alone, eats breakfast alone, and goes to the cabin to unpack alone. It’s the first time Sam has helped as camp monitor; he doesn’t know the summer missionaries he’ll work with, and he’s signed up to work all five weeks. We wonder what we’ve gotten ourselves into. Week four of camp. Friday evening. Sam is at the pool with all his new friends, relating how God changed his life this summer. He tells how he’s never before worked with people who love God and want to serve Him; now he’s ready to make a commitment to serving Christ for the rest of his life. Sam gets baptized as a profession of his deep faith in his Savior. This is what God can do in just four weeks of summer camp. We often focus on the children attending camp and how they will be impacted by the Gospel, and rightly so. But God doesn’t just work in children’s lives, He also works in our summer missionaries. He works in cooks, cleaning crews, and maintenance guys. God doesn’t miss a single person. This is the God we serve and their stories are what we look forward to hearing. “It was incredible to share the good news of Jesus Christ.”
MIRAMICHI VALLEY BIBLE CAMP
Is Anything Better Than That? T
his summer at Miramichi Valley Bible Camp (MVBC) was one for the books! It was my first summer as executive director and, while I have been involved with the camp for a number of years as camp speaker and board secretary, being on the front line was a whole new adventure! ANGELA ETTINGER Many campers this summer had zero faith Executive Director affiliation. It was incredible to share the good news of Jesus Christ with them! Parents made a point of telling us their kids came home each day and shared the Bible story. On her last day of camp, one little girl said, “Angela, thanks for teaching me about God this week.” Is anything better than that? For me, one highlight was seeing friendships blossom. A camper had a tough Monday morning and wanted to go home. I convinced him to stay for lunch and later convinced him to stay for quiet time. When I accompanied him to his cabin, another little boy introduced himself, sat with him, and made him feel welcome! They became friends. The first boy stayed the rest of that day and came back excited every day after! God did amazing things at MVBC, and we’re eager to see what else He will do throughout the coming year!
BLOMIDON BIBLE CAMP We were hopeful about restarting overnight camps, but had to battle unbelief. Would children return? Would we complete renovations on time? More obstacles compounded our struggle: exposure of new infrastructure problems, red tape, and a shortage of summer missionaries. Grit and determination were not enough, but God removed every obstacle and His will prevailed. God wanted His Son proclaimed on this property and incredible stories of the impact are still coming in. NEW FOUND LIFE BIBLE CAMP God promised to do above and beyond what we could ask or think. With only a month to go before day camps at our new venue, with no summer missionaries signed up and only a few campers, we prayed. God answered by bringing a team of two Christian school teachers, four teens, and a soccer coach. Fifty-three children attended the three weeks, forty-three for the first time. Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised! SANDY COVE BIBLE CAMP Ned had given up on God because of personal circumstances, but the peace he saw at camp and the hope he heard about from our workers and Christian campers caused him to reconsider. Thanks to God’s intervention, cabin leaders testify to receiving unexpected wisdom to answer campers’ questions. Campers eagerly and voluntarily read their Bibles because they caught the excitement. Team members were counseled to lean into God's truth for their personal spiritual warfare. We were blessed.

send out [my word], and it always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it (Isaiah 55:11, New Living Translation). While our core program shifted over the past two years to primarily a day camp model, we saw tremendous growth this year in the quality of discipleship for campers and young summer missionaries. Twelve children approached our senior leaders with questions about sin and salvation and we are confident they made clear professions of faith in Christ. Brad had attended day camp for several years, and one day approached his leader with questions about salvation. His leader clearly showed him the good news of Jesus in Scripture and Brad eagerly prayed to receive Christ as Savior. He shouted across the pond, “I’m a Christian!” and told his friends around the camp about his new faith. The teachings he’d learned all summer about Christ became real and we noticed a remarkable difference in his actions and attitude for the remaining weeks of day camp. Mazie had attended day camp for five summers and when asked early this season if she was ready to trust Jesus, she replied, “Not yet.” On her last day, after eight weeks of day camp, I asked what she had learned in chapel. She recounted matters of creation, being made in God’s image, and sin. I asked if Jesus was her Savior and she said, “Yes!” without hesitation. I asked how she knew and she pointed to the crosses on the front lawn. Tears streamed down her face as she said, “Because whenever I look down there, I think of all the things Jesus has done for me.” I could tell many stories about God meeting and exceeding our expectations. We witnessed real faith and real life changes as a result of that faith. Though our program changed, sharing God’s Word with children has not. The good news of Jesus was faithfully taught and God caused His Word to prosper at Hampton Bible Camp in 2021.

SUMMER/FALL 2021
Expect Great T h i n gs
Expect great things from God; attempt great things for God. William Carey
O
HOWARD McLEOD served with Canadian Sunday School Mission from 1976–2007, as director of Galilean Bible Camp and Ontario branch director.
ne spring in the 1940s, Margaret Thompson sat in a motorboat near her tourist resort on Lake Dubourne in north-central Ontario, picturing it as a place for area children to hear the Gospel. For several years, she searched for an organization to help her realize the vision she had for her Sunnybrook Cottages. Meanwhile, she vacated the resort for a week each summer so boys from her Sunday school class could enjoy freedom in the great outdoors and overnight in her cabins. She built a chapel and dining hall, expecting God to one day use her property for His glory. Early in 1952, Margaret met personnel from the Canadian Sunday School Mission (CSSM), and that summer hosted one week of Bible camp in Sunnybrook Cottages for children throughout her area. Mary Neal, a CSSM missionary, directed the camp, using its beautiful sandy beach, comfortable resort cabins, dining hall, and chapel. For eighteen years, Margaret loaned her entire resort to CSSM for the summer and camper numbers expanded each year. During that time, this summer ministry was named Galilean Bible Camp. After much soul-searching, Margaret signed over the deeds of her two lakefront lots as a gift to God and CSSM. A board was formed and Margaret’s vision of reaching children expanded to include a retreat ministry for adults. By faith, the new board witnessed a miracle: a large winterized, three-storey lodge was completed with twenty dorm rooms and other amenities for weekend retreats, thanks to generous gifts from God’s people. Through the faithful ministry at Galilean Bible Camp, and other One Hope Canada camps like it, many children have placed their trust in Jesus Christ, and teens and adults have obeyed God’s call to full time service. May godly expectations continue and may many more find fulfillment as we “attempt great things for God”. CANADA’S HOPE
