Needed: Flood-Tolerant Crops The pursuit of drought-tolerant crops is part of nearly every university ag research department nationwide. But this spring, it wasn’t a lack of rain that prevented planting in many areas. It was too much water.

Amanda Huber Of the primary food Editor crops, worldwide, only rice is able to grow in flooded conditions. Why is that? Rice is a grass. Corn is a grass. Why do crops react differently in waterlogged soils?

That’s exactly what researchers at the University of California, Davis, are trying to determine. The research, recently published in the journal “Science,” looked at how other crops, specifically a wild tomato, a garden tomato and a plant similar to alfalfa, compared to rice when submerged in water. They were sur-

prised to find a number of common gene families that are activated in response to flooding.

Rice was domesticated from wild species that grew in tropical regions and adapted to endure monsoons. Other plants may contain the same genes but did not need to activate them because their adaptation did not involve flooded conditions.

“We hope to take advantage of what we learned about rice in order to help activate the genes in other plants that could help them survive waterlogging,” says study lead Julia Bailey-Serres, a UC Riverside professor of genetics.

These studies will continue and more research like this will be needed if scientists are going to unlock the potential for more of the worlds’ primary food crops to survive both flooding and drought, ensuring future food security. CS

The Conference Board released its updated Leading Economic Index, which indicated a recession was not likely.

Grain Use

The seasonal price pattern for the December corn contract shows that prices tend to have some upward momentum early in the year before trading below the yearly average in July. Acreage and yield uncertainty normally support an early season price trend. Even with this year’s late planting pace and delayed crop development, and all we still do not know about final production, the price pattern is following seasonal tendencies. Yield results from the field will help determine whether the seasonal low is in or if it is still ahead of us.

A good week of corn export sales was reported for mid-September at 58 million bushels. This is well above the 34-million bushel pace needed to reach the 2.05-billion bushel target and the highest weekly sales since December 2018.

The September cattle on feed report showed 10.9 million head in lots with a capacity of 1,000 head or more. This is 143,000 head less than last year’s record for September.

While cattle on feed are down slightly from last year, this is still the second highest record for September feed inventories.

Outside Markets

The Federal Open Market Committee of the Federal Reserve voted to lower the target range for the federal funds rate. The committee noted that the labor market remains strong, but they voted to lower interest rates because of the implications of global developments for the economic outlook, as well as

With the crop going in late, acreage and yield estimates are shrouded in more uncertainty. The late-planted crop will face more risk from pollination and grain fill at a hotter time of the summer and issues related to moisture content and test weight at season’s end. In USDA’s September Crop Report, the yield estimate was only slightly lower, and planted and harvested acres were unchanged.

Pioneer Launches Yield Estimator Part of the Pioneer mobile app, the new Corn Yield Estimator is based on kernel count, stand count and kernels per bushel. It walks the user through the process of lining up the corn ear to be sampled, taking the necessary number of images and entering information before providing a yield estimate. The tool requires that husks and silks be removed in the picture, but the ear does not need to be pulled from the stalk.

“This tool is part of Pioneer’s effort to advance customers’ ability to improve management,” says Jeremy Groeteke, U.S. Digital Agriculture Lead, Corteva Agriscience. “The goal of this app is to standardize the process for estimating yield from a single ear of corn and is part of our predictive agriculture effort.”

The introduction of the yield estimator kicks off a Pioneer digital ecosystem, including the Pioneer Seeds mobile app and the revamped Pioneer. com. The new login interface, along with a user friendly online payment experience and mobile responsiveness, is designed to make a more cohesive online environment for users.

The new Pioneer.com website is designed to be a one-stop-shop, providing premium resources to farmers, such as a personalized seed guide, local yield data, updated and improved agronomy filtering, seasonal tools and calculators. CS
