About Us Who We Are:

One Eleuthera Foundation (OEF) is a nonprofit community development organization incorporated in the Commonwealth of The Bahamas. Led by a committed team and Board of Directors, OEF is part of an organic collaboration of different community actors and organizations that have recognized the island’s challenges, opportunities, and assets and have committed to developing a comprehensive, sustainable plan for Eleuthera. We represent a gathering of professionals and organizations that share a commitment to A Shared Vision for South Eleuthera built on the responsible stewardship and development of our island’s many assets and resources.

One Eleuthera Foundation of the U.S. (OEF-US) is a registered 501(c)3 headquartered in the Carolinas.

Founded in 2016, its mission is to support the work of OEF and its partners as they transform local communities into thriving, successful, and scalable models of sustainable development and progressive change.

To facilitate Eleuthera in becoming a thriving, inclusive, and equitable community-driven ecosystem for sustainable development, social empowerment, and economic ownership.

The Centre for Training and Innovation (CTI) is an Eleuthera-based nonprofit birthed and powered by OEF. As the primary education arm of OEF, CTI’s mission is to develop students through technical training. CTI’s vision is to become the country’s leading institution for tertiary training and skills development, focused on driving local innovation and creating economic opportunities in areas critical to the sustainable development of Eleuthera and The Bahamas.

The title for our Annual Impact Report represents how OEF goes from “gift to impact” year in and year out in a balanced yet dynamic sequence. Just as the earth moves around the sun, it is a consistent cycle where the investments of time, expertise, and finances contribute to a larger whole, creating a momentum of its own. Each Annual Impact Report depicts the impact our gifts have had not only on our immediate communities but the country at large. It highlights the strategies being deployed to strengthen our communities, connect the island, and plan for the future as we go “Full Circle” with each new year.

The period 2022-2023 has been an exciting one for The Bahamas and indeed the One Eleuthera Foundation (OEF). During this time, The Bahamas celebrated its 50th Anniversary of Independence which was marked by the hosting of various national events throughout the country including: flag raising ceremonies, the staging of cultural expressions demonstrating the rich history and pride of the Bahamian people, and the hosting of celebrations recognizing the country’s achievements and honoring the framers of the constitution.

This time of reflection further highlighted the common threads that bind us as a people and emphasized the need for organizations, like OEF, to continue to play a leading role in the future development and strengthening of our country and our communities.

OEF has achieved much success over the years as demonstrated in our efforts to improve food sovereignty and security, the expansion of our OEF/ CTI campus training facilities and the strengthening of our social enterprises, including our farm, restaurant and training hotel operations. This success is further exemplified in the facilitation of entrepreneurial opportunities through our Social Enterprise Accelerator, the strengthening of our partners and the support given to healthcare workers and cultural activities on the island of Eleuthera.

As our country moves forward, we believe that OEF is uniquely positioned to tackle the future challenges through our Five Key Areas of Focus that include: economic development, educational advancement, environmental sustainability, health promotion and heritage preservation. This can only be accomplished through the combined efforts of

our donors and supporters, the hardworking staff of OEF, the leadership provided by our dedicated Board of Directors and the efforts of our incredible Senior Management Team.

The last fiscal quarter of 2022-2023 has been one of transition for the organization. During the period OEF Founder, Shaun Ingraham, stepped down as President and CEO ushering in a new era for the organization. Special thanks to Shaun for his visionary leadership that has shaped OEF into a respected force for positive change, while addressing some of our country’s most urgent challenges. We congratulate him on his success and we thank him for ensuring that OEF is well prepared for the next phase of growth and development. We look forward to his continued contribution as a Director of OEF. On behalf of the Board of Directors of OEF, I wish to thank you for your unwavering support and acknowledge the immeasurable contributions of our staff and our stakeholders. Abraham Lincoln It is an honor and privilege to serve our community as the newly appointed President and CEO of One Eleuthera Foundation (OEF) and Centre for Training and Innovation (CTI).

nonprofits in the country. Under his leadership, OEF and CTI have achieved remarkable milestones. I am committed to building upon this solid foundation to further our mission and impact.

I returned to my childhood home of Eleuthera a few years ago with the goal of making a meaningful contribution to these dynamic and progressive organizations for the transformation of our island.

Transitioning from the role of Chief Operating Officer to President and CEO, I felt a deepened sense of purpose and responsibility. I remain inspired by our organizations’ impact throughout the Eleuthera community and the contributions made to our country’s national development over the years.

Yet, I am also excited about the journey ahead and dedicated to leading our consortium of community champions and partners into the next chapter of impact, growth, and positive change.

This past year has been a testament to the resilience, strength, and determination of our team. Despite challenges, we remained steadfast in our mission of planning, strengthening, and connecting the island of Eleuthera through our successful programs and initiatives. We have seen countless lives transformed and communities uplifted as we have expanded our programs in food security, education, the environment, economy, and health.

I want to take the opportunity to express my sincere appreciation and gratitude to our founding President and CEO, Shaun Ingraham, for his visionary leadership and selfless contributions and sacrifices in pioneering OEF and CTI into two of the most progressive

In this report, we celebrate our accomplishments, share personal impact stories from our students, and highlight the partners and supporters who have made our work possible. We also provide a strategic outlook of our plans to tackle the current and future challenges of Eleuthera’s evolving landscape.

As we reflect, we also look forward to the opportunities that lie ahead. The next phase of our mission is more important than ever. By refining our

strategic plan, fostering new partnerships, and implementing innovative programs, we will focus on new solutions to tackle community challenges.

We will also increase our local grantmaking through OEF-US, our 501(c)3 sister entity, to support the ongoing work of our local community partners. Additionally, we will amplify our advocacy efforts for the advancement of the third sector and Eleuthera.

I believe that partnerships and collaboration play pivotal roles in fostering and sustaining long-term change. Our partnerships will continue to expand across various sectors which include government, private, and nonprofit organizations. Together, we can achieve our ambitious goals with remarkable outcomes that cannot be attained alone. I am excited to work closely with our dedicated team, committed volunteers, valued donors, and community partners for our collective success.

MOVING THE NEEDLE A Year of Milestones and Growth The past year has been an exciting one marked by many significant milestones that embody the goals laid out in our founding manifesto, A Shared Vision for South Eleuthera. From year to year, each successful program and community initiative launched plays a pivotal role in connecting our work to the mission of empowering people and building resilient, selfsufficient communities and a strong economy.

As a Bahamian-led nonprofit and community development organization, we are uniquely

positioned to foster inclusivity, drive long-term change, and respond to our community’s needs.

Our work at One Eleuthera Foundation (OEF) centers on holistic, sustainable development and advancement around Five Key Areas of Focus: Economy, Education, Environment, Health and Wellness, and Heritage and Culture.

Looking back over the last fiscal year, we are proud to celebrate both large and small developments that point to our progress and ongoing community impact.

Food Security Acceleration: Production Starts in the Oasis Grow House At the start of 2023, a significant milestone was reached as our revolutionary 1.1-acre Oasis Grow House kicked off full-scale production. This cutting-edge facility marked a breakthrough for food security acceleration, as it allowed us to overcome the challenges posed by scorching summer temperatures. This accomplishment represents a substantial stride towards our overarching goals of enhancing local food security, boosting food production capacities, and ultimately improving community health outcomes. The Oasis Grow House, a true innovation, is the country’s first automated “retractable roof” facility. Its unique design enables us to shield

crops from intense heat, wind, and rain, safeguarding their growth. The Oasis Grow House is not just about advanced technology; it is also a space where pioneering meets practicality. Our farmers are at the forefront of adopting new methods, including low-tech hydroponics, all within a controlled environment that optimizes conditions for plant growth. This convergence of innovation and practicality underscores our commitment to revitalizing the agricultural sector.

By embracing this technology and training farmers on-site, we are not only ensuring the sustainability of our agricultural landscape but also cultivating a community of skilled practitioners who will drive the sector forward.

Solar Powering the Farm & Oasis Grow House As part of our journey to becoming a 100% Green Campus, OEF and Centre for Training and Innovation (CTI) continue to implement clean energy alternatives on the Rock Sound campus. Thanks to a grant provided

by The Clinton Foundation, we were able to install a new 14.58 kW Solar PV System to power our farm and Oasis Grow House. This grid-tied solar addition takes us one step closer to our sustainable green campus goals.

In addition, by utilizing this grid-tied solar PV system, we are not just powering our operations; we are also demonstrating a profound commitment to reducing our carbon footprint. This aligns with our overarching goal of mitigating climate change, a global challenge that demands bold, localized actions.

Increasing International Collaboration and Cultivating Connections For the last several months, the CTI campus has seen an increased amount of growth and visiting delegation tours. Our community organization and local food security initiatives have captured the attention of many international inter-governmental organizations and high-level dignitaries who have visited to see our work in action. Most recently, we have hosted Dr. Crispim Moreira, Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) Representative for Jamaica,

The Bahamas and Belize; Ambassador Cindy McCain, US Ambassador to the United Nations (UN) and Executive Director of the UN World Food Program; Tom Hartley, the United Kingdom’s (UK) Ambassador to The Bahamas; and Dai Qingli, the Chinese Ambassador to The Bahamas, just to name a few. Through multilateral cooperation, we have the power to address complex global issues, starting at the community level.

Advancing Education: $21,000 Awarded in University Scholarships and $257,000 in Technical Training Scholarships on Eleuthera Education lies at the core of our mission and is a strategic focus that drives our investment efforts. In a significant stride towards education empowerment, a total of 18 promising students from South Eleuthera have been awarded funding to pursue their higher education journeys. Among them, several have secured opportunities at esteemed institutions such as The University of The Bahamas and various universities in the United States. This scholarship initiative, totaling $21,000, demonstrates our commitment to nurturing the aspirations of our youth and investing in their future. Our dedication to education does not stop at traditional academia. We are advancing technical and vocational education on Eleuthera through CTI’s Learn and Earn Program in South Eleuthera and the CTI Harbour Island Trade School (CTI-HITS) in North Eleuthera. This fiscal year, we have granted $257,000 in scholarship funding to students, supporting them as they gain essential skills and technical training in diverse indemand trades. By facilitating their growth in technical fields, we are not only shaping individual careers and facilitating entrepreneurship but also contributing to the overall workforce development of our island and local communities.

Filling Local Skills Gaps: Rolling Out New, In-demand Courses & Workshops at CTI We continue to close the skills gap on the island with a direct focus on preparing our workforce for emerging employment and entrepreneurial opportunities on Eleuthera through our training partner, CTI. Closing skills gaps enhances the employability of individuals and the expansion of local businesses contributing to economic growth and job creation, leading to higher standards of living. This year we have added Bartending & Mixology, Massage Therapy, QuickBooks 1, and The Art of Hosting to our robust catalog. Our courses are NAECOB-approved and provide a vital path to success for Eleutherans unable to travel for training and education.

Strengthening Our Community: $70,000 invested Locally This fiscal year over $70,000 was distributed in community grants to support local youth, sports, and culture-based initiatives and various community programs. Strengthening local community organizations and assisting in their growth and success remains an important part of our work in creating thriving, holistic communities.

Our commitment to nurturing organizations that serve the diverse needs of our community is deeply ingrained in our mission.

OEF’s 11th Anniversary is Celebrated With Our Community On April 22nd (Earth Day), OEF celebrated its 11th Anniversary, entering a new decade of strategic planning and partnerships centered on achieving our community development goals. This milestone was commemorated with an Earth Day Community Festival at the Rock Sound campus and with a Staff and Student Volunteer Day on our farm.

This immersion in nature and exposure to sustainable farming practices provided a valuable lesson for the next generation in organic growing, food sovereignty, and the importance of local food security.

Passing the Baton: OEF’s Leadership Transition July 1st, 2023 marked a significant transition for OEF as our visionary founder, President and CEO Shaun Ingraham, stepped down and passed the leadership baton to his successor, Keyron Smith. As a founder, Shaun played a vital role in establishing OEF’s vision, mission, and organizational infrastructure on Eleuthera centered around sustainable development.

Saving Lives with OEF’s 3rd Annual Learn to Swim Program

The Debut of Farmer’s Table Restaurant at CTI On September 6th, our campus training restaurant, Farmer’s Table, opened its doors, serving up delicious farm-totable meals utilizing freshly harvested produce from our farm. The eatery provides a delicious selection of plantbased dishes to promote balanced eating and a healthful dining alternative for our staff and community at large. As a social enterprise, it also functions as a practical culinary and hospitality teaching space, where our CTI students gain valuable experience learning and training in a real-world environment. In conjunction with our training hotel, The Retreat, this addition to our campus footprint enhances our agritourism guest experience.

OEF’s 3rd Annual Learn to Swim summer program continues to make a splash and increase in scope and impact. This year we saw a 23% increase in students participating in this free six-week program, which teaches both children and adults from 5 to 65 years essential lifesaving, swimming, water safety, and drowning prevention skills. This is a critical resource and staple program for our community. We are thankful to our dedicated coaches, volunteers, and program partners who continue to provide support and assist us in empowering our community with this important life skill.

OEF, CTI & Eleuthera Partners Win Prestigious Sustainable Tourism Award Affirming its commitment to the sustainability of the Caribbean tourism industry, the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA) announced the winners of its 2023 Destination Resilience Awards in Barbados in May. The island of Eleuthera and Jamaica took home the top awards on the tourism world stage. This award was bestowed as a result of submissions made by local organizations that prioritize sustainable development, including

One Eleuthera Foundation, Centre for Training and Innovation, The Island School, The Eleuthera Sustainability Council, and Clean Beaches Eleuthera, among others. Recognizing destinations with a deliberate focus on resilience and sustainability, this unprecedented win crowned Eleuthera as a regional leader in sustainable tourism. The awards, presented

by CHTA in collaboration with the Caribbean Alliance for Sustainable Tourism (CAST), were conceived

during the COVID-19 pandemic and are aimed at distinguishing destinations with a deliberate focus on resilience and sustainability. Judges assessed destinations’ commitment to addressing some or all of the World Tourism Organization’s sustainable development goals to mitigate the effects of climate change and the broader challenges impacting sustainable development.

Protection of the Kirtland’s Warbler in partnership with BNT & ABC

The Return of On-Site Cultural & Heritage Festivals

The CTI campus in Rock Sound is a natural habitat for many rare species of both migratory and endemic birds, including the Kirtland’s Warbler, one of the rarest nesting migratory songbirds in the United States and Canada. On the verge of extinction, the Kirtland’s Warbler numbered only 167 breeding pairs in 1987. The population is now upwards of 2,300 breeding pairs. OEF continues to work in partnership with the American Bird Conservancy and the Bahamas National Trust in local conservation efforts, regular workshops, and training initiatives, as well as bird-watching experiences on the CTI campus.

This year we celebrated the full return of community festivals on our campus following COVID-19. In partnership with the Eleuthera Ministry of Tourism (MOT), we hosted the MOT’s Annual Food, Art and Craft Festival, a celebration of authentic Bahamian culture, cuisine, and craftsmanship. By strategically embracing events that bolster the Orange Economy, we are leading the way in fostering and diversifying economic growth, supporting local creative entrepreneurs and nurturing our island’s heritage and unique cultural identity.

Launch of CTI Farm Tours & Group Visits

Disaster Relief Preparation & Action Plan Is Initiated

In March, we officially launched our Farm Tour experience.

This 35-minute guided tour provides guests with an up-close observation of our groundbreaking Oasis Grow House and the sustainable farming practices being employed on our farm. Guests of all ages enjoy learning the history of Bahamian agriculture and our mission to advance agriculture and food security through sustainable farming and local farmer education. School tours are offered for free and have been integrated into the curriculum of some of our local high schools. International universities and volunteer group visits have also increased as interest in our farm and campus grows. The trickledown effect of increased tourism driven by group visits can have positive economic impacts on the island and other sectors of Eleuthera’s economy.

Thanks to a $150,000 grant from GlobalGiving and in partnership with South Eleuthera Emergency Partners (SEEP), OEF is taking action to prepare our island for future storms with an island-wide preparedness and disaster recovery action plan. As history has shown, most recently with Hurricane Dorian, swift emergency assistance and disaster relief are of paramount importance. Due to our heightened vulnerability to the devastating impacts of these natural disasters, advanced preparation is crucial in saving lives, protecting livelihoods, and rebuilding communities.

Part of this effort includes the procurement of essential disaster preparedness and recovery equipment and supplies which will be on-island and on hand should disaster strike.

OEF Partners With BTC To Promote Corporate Wellness

Expanding Our Impact Through Regional Relationships

In April, we were delighted to partner with BTC, one of the country’s leading telecommunications companies, in a staff wellness initiative focused on healthy eating.

In collaboration with the company’s CEO, Sameer Bhatti, a free Farmers Market was set up at the BTC corporate office in Nassau. The market showcased a bounty of CTI’s freshly harvested produce, including heirloom and grape tomatoes, leafy greens, cucumbers & mint. Staff were able to fill their grocery bags with premium, healthful vegetables, which they used to prepare delicious, nutritious meals over the Easter Holiday. Prioritizing employee health and wellness leads to a range of benefits, including improved productivity, reduced costs, enhanced company culture, and increased employee satisfaction. We were pleased to play a part in this community health initiative.

In February, OEF participated in the 5th Annual St. Croix Foundation for Community Development Philanthropy Retreat. This event brought together place-based community foundations from around the region and sparked solutions-oriented discussions on amplifying impact, cross-border networking, and bolstering collaboration to promote progress, equity and self-sufficiency on a larger scale. Joining the conversation with other sector leaders, OEF explored progressive resilience models that have proven effective in navigating challenges, including natural disasters and the ongoing post-pandemic landscape.

Food for thought about food sustainability in The Bahamas

The Launch of OEF’s National Newspaper Column We made the dailies! This fiscal year we launched a bi-weekly column in The Tribune Newspaper, one of the country’s leading newspapers. Media exposure serves as a powerful amplifier for our nonprofit’s mission.

By showcasing our impactful initiatives and success stories, we are raising awareness and bringing attention to the important work of community building. This increased visibility not only attracts potential donors but also highlights the significance of their contributions in driving meaningful change. It also gives our organization a national platform to advocate for and educate the public about the importance of the third sector in community and national development.

I recently came across a document that I wrote in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic when the world was in turmoil due to lockdowns and many of the distributions systems that we took for granted for many years were shutting down.

Many were questioning our survival as a nation, not only due to this novel virus that was wreaking havoc on our health but because our traditional food importation system was showing signs of crumbling. The fact is undeniable that if we were suddenly not able to import food into The Bahamas, we would have a crisis of survival.

Currently, we import approximately 95% of our food. If this food importation was to cease, then what would happen... would only 5% of our population be able to eat? Certainly, we would face complete chaos and the eventual starvation of many unless we could figure out how to grow our own food at volumes large enough to feed our country!

This challenge has evaded us for many years and successive governments have seen the need to address this glaring vulnerability but have not managed to lead us from dependency to food security. Food security means that all persons have regular access to an adequate supply of safe, nutritious and affordable food.

a case that although food security is vital, the ultimate THE food TRIBUNE goal is actually sovereignty. This is a scenario where the population is not merely ‘food secure’ but they are involved and have some control over their food production and consumption practices instead of an unhealthy dependance on corporations whose main goal is profitability. This is a global challenge and one I look forward to exploring in a future article. For now, I would like to propose some simple concepts that can help us move from food dependency towards food security.

To be clear, I am a trained food scientist and have only been involved in food production in The Bahamas for the past 20 years, so I do not pretend to have extensive expertise in economics and governance, but I offer my observations as someone who is very passionate about food production and has a deep commitment to see The Bahamas thrive and flourish both health wise and economically.

I envision a multi-pronged approach to food production that involves diversity of crops and food production models. The more diversity we build into our model the stronger the model will be.

One thing that we are learning as modern agriculture evolves is that large mega farms growing one single crop are vulnerable to many stresses which makes them dependent on a steady input

A good diet is the secret to good health AN ancient Ayurvedic proverb states that “If diet is wrong, medicine is of no use. If diet is correct, medicine is of no need”.

The first time I heard this proverb I got goosebumps.

During the pandemic lockdowns, I was on a journey of discovering the vast depths of clinical studies showing the seemingly miraculous ability of food to heal our bodies. At that time, I remember feeling like I had heard the “gospel of food-as-medicine”.

I was pleasantly astonished that many of the chronic, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) that had become so commonplace in our society (Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and cancer) and were largely being managed and treated by the medical profession using pharmaceuticals and surgical procedures, could not only be prevented but also treated and reversed by diet and other lifestyle changes.

To impress upon you why this resonated with me so strongly, I must share a bit of my career journey.

For much of my high school years, I had aspired to be a physician. Biology and chemistry fascinated me, and I reveled in learning about how the various bodily systems functioned.

It was not until six months before high school graduation that I felt tugged in a totally opposite direction studying agriculture to help move our country toward food security.

More than thirty years later, I am realising that my role as an organic vegetable producer is more important to our nation’s health today than I ever could have imagined when I changed career paths.

Global health has seen a steady decline since the latter half of the twentieth century, being observed initially in developed countries.

An expert Joint Report published in 2003 by the WHO (World Health Organization) and the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) reported that 60 percent of global deaths were caused by NCDs. Today, the percentage of global deaths attributed to chronic NCDs is 74 percent.

Even more concerning then, as it is now, is the rate at which NCDs are occurring in the developing world.

DR SELIMA HAUBER, PHD terminology “diseases of affluence” is now a misnomer according to current statistics revealing that 77 percent of global deaths resulting from NCDs occur in the developing world.

Our very own statistics concur as 74 percent of all deaths in The Bahamas are due to NCDs. The Bahamas leads the region in being overweight and almost half of the population is obese. One in seven Bahamians is diabetic and an alarming 47 percent of the population is hypertensive. This epidemic of NCDs comes at a significant cost to our healthcare system and threatens the future progress of our country. How did this potentially crippling epidemic come about, you might ask?

The WHO-FAO Joint Report cites significant changes in global eating patterns over the second half of the twentieth century from traditional, plant-based diets to nutrient-poor and energydense diets rich in animal products as a factor. While diet is not the sole contributor to the epidemic of NCDs, it plays a significant role.

In 2014, SPORE magazine, a publication of the Technical Centre for Agriculture and Rural Cooperation, addressed the rise in overweight and obesity stats in African, Caribbean and Pacific Island states, pinning the blame on the countries’ dependence on imported foods and “the lack of attention to local food production”.

This is evident in The Bahamas as we currently import

almost ninety percent of our food, with processed foods accounting for $400m of a total $1bn spent on food imports. Although awareness and concern regarding consumption of locally grown produce is increasing, the level of production is grossly insufficient to increase access to affordable, fresh foods in quantities that can positively impact national health.

Here again is where I get goosebumps. Clinical trials conducted more than 30 years ago, and countless epidemiological studies conducted since, are showing the efficacy of whole food, plant-based diets in the prevention, treatment, and reversal of chronic NCDs. In some cases, daily insulin injections are no longer needed. Risky, invasive procedures such as coronary and gastric bypass surgeries can be avoided by adopting healthier eating habits. One does not have to “live” with a chronic NCD. Under no circumstances am I suggesting that one who needs recurrent medication or complex procedures will have an easy road back to health by simply swapping beans for beef. Additionally, it takes tremendous willpower and culinary creativity to compete against hyper-palatable junk foods and reverse decades of poor eating habits.

The great news though, is that changes in health markers can be realised in as little as four weeks and once dreaded conditions can be reversed, and better yet prevented entirely by adopting a whole-food, plant-based diet.

Self-discipline notwithstanding, one must have access to a consistent, large supply of fresh produce to successfully reverse disease. It is also not enough for produce to be physically accessible. It must also be economically accessible.

This is the gap that I am excited and proud to fill as a local producer. This is the gap that is crying out for more young Bahamians to enter. The more growers we have, the greater access our

people have to health-promoting food.

As more of us return to our deep roots of subsistence food production and establish fruit and vegetable gardens that feed us NCDs will become less prevalent in our population. I envision a day when our farms become our “farmacies”.

I strive to grow and to teach others to grow, so that we can eventually pay farmers more often than we are currently paying physicians in the quest for health. Our nation is deserving of vitality and good health, and our future progress depends on it!

This can be extremely harmful and dangerous. A more diversified food production model will allow us to grow using a much more sustainable approach and minimise the need for these synthetic inputs.

I envision a sustainable farming model based on developing four main pillars: Backyard Gardening, Urban Farming, Market Garden Farming and Large-scale Family Island Production.

Backyard Gardening Backyard gardening is the ultimate model of self-sustainability and empowerment. The endeavour of growing your own food allows you total control of what you grow but also how you grow it. There will be no questions about pesticide contamination of your food if you have grown it yourself using organic techniques. It is amazing how much food can be produced from a simple 4-foot by 4-foot garden plot. I encourage you to start small and as you gain experience and confidence you can expand your garden to a size that will provide not only for your family but also for your neighbours!

STUDENT SUCCESS STORIES Leveling Up To Lead Raymond Ward

CTI-HITS Graduate – Carpentry Spring 2021 & Electrical Installation Summer 2023 Growing up in Upper Bogue, Eleuthera and born into a family with an already established Trucking and Heavy Machinery company, Raymond Ward’s path seemed predestined. Yet, he desired to find his niche and a way to add greater value to the business. At the tender age of twenty-four, he is making great strides toward putting Ward’s Heavy Equipment on the map and ensuring it stays there. “I came from a lineage of carpenters, masons, and electricians. My main goal for the business is to expand and really be able to upgrade things from a local family business to one day expanding into a corporation,” he explains.

When Raymond learned of the professional development Carpentry courses offered by CTI-HITS on Harbour Island, he knew it was a path. Seeing it as an opportunity to level up and take a leading role in the family business, he delved into the world of carpentry, learning everything from fundamental techniques to advanced woodworking practices. A hard worker, he earned the respect of his instructors and peers by being a diligent student of the craft and excelling quickly. Raymond used every project as an opportunity for selfexpression, infusing his unique style and 14 | ONE ELEUTHERA FOUNDATION ANNUAL IMPACT REPORT 2022/2023

creative ideas into his work.

Getting certified in Carpentry whet his desire for growth and development, so just a few years after graduating, Raymond returned to class to embark on the Electrical Installation course. He is slated to graduate in August of 2023 and will now add this in-demand trade to his growing portfolio of skills.

“I’ve got a fascination with electrical installation, and it comes really easily to me. The CTI courses are great; I would tell anyone thinking about enrolling that it’s a unique opportunity. It’s an easy way to get access to knowledge that will reward you heavily in the future.”

Raymond will tell you how learning two new trades has bolstered his confidence and stirred his hunger for more. Noticing the uptick in building on the island, he is looking to branch out into different aspects of construction.

“My main focus is versatility and being well-rounded. I am motivated to succeed by the love of those around me, my family, and my loved ones. I want to be of greater help to my community and in the family business. I want to keep learning. It’s a priority to me.”

Receiving scholarships from CTI-HITS allowed Raymond to continue his education at home when pursuing studies abroad was not feasible.

Today, he stands ready to integrate his newfound skills into his family’s business as he elevates himself and the company to new heights.

Learning for Serving Mary Sweeting

CTI Learn and Earn Graduate – Beginners Sewing Class 2019, Apiology & Apiculture (Beekeeping) Course 2021, Basic Culinary Course 2022 Mary Sweeting is not the “typical” CTI student. At fifty-three years young, she is a mother of six and an avid learner who defies stereotypes. She lives by the personal declaration that “Life can be full of learning, loving and serving others. By learning, you are equipping yourself to serve others with your gift, which is a true act of love.”

Over the past five years, Mary has graduated from three diverse “Learn and Earn” courses: Beginners Sewing, Apiology & Apiculture (beekeeping) and Basic Culinary. Each time she has ventured to expand her skill set, it has been with the heartfelt intention of finding new ways to give back to her community while helping to support her large family.

She recalls signing up for CTI’s Beginners Sewing Class in 2019, desiring to meet more people and connect with her community around a shared hobby.

Being self-taught, she wanted to gain the confidence to master her sewing machine and take her abilities to the next level, which she did. With her new skills, Mary began offering free back-to-school uniform alterations for students on Eleuthera, a tradition she continues every year.

“I am so happy to do this for the children returning to school. It makes me feel good to help. I am only going to live here on this earth once. As I get older, I want to look back and think about the simple things I did to make someone’s life better,” she explains.

In April 2021, Mary stepped out of her comfort zone to try her hand at something completely new: beekeeping. As an Apiology and Apiculture student, she learned the fascinating world of bee biology and how to start and manage her own bee colony. She relished the challenge of learning the anatomy of the hive, the safe handling of bees, and how to maintain healthy hives. Being exposed to extracting and processing honey and making beneficial by-products like bee wax salves with essential oils opened her up to a new world. It wasn’t long before Mary’s neighbors began asking for her help with harvesting their honey and safely removing unwanted hives.

The following year Mary upskilled with the Basic Culinary course and expanded her cooking capacity.

She learned many new cooking methods, including stirfry cooking, baking and preparing dehydrated foods, and the basics of food safety and proper sanitization.

Recognizing her tenacious spirit, zest for learning and diligent work ethic, Mary was offered a full-time job at CTI as a Farm Associate shortly after graduation.

Today, she is using many of her skills to help build the farm and organization while supporting her family.

She is an all-around team player and happy to fill in wherever needed, whether checking on the campus beehives, harvesting produce, washing and packaging vegetables or stocking the retail coolers with fresh produce every morning. One of her favorite activities is interacting with customers and sharing the health benefits of eating fresh vegetables. She often leans on her culinary training to offer cooking ideas and recipe suggestions for tasty plant-based meals.

Mary’s story proves that success happens when preparation meets opportunity and that education is the best investment you can make, regardless of age.

Driven to Succeed Stephan Moss

CTI-HITS Graduate – Basic Culinary Course Spring 2023 & QuickBooks 1 Summer 2023 The Bahamas, renowned for its breathtaking beauty and vibrant culture, is also home to stories of resilience, determination, and triumph.

One such success story is of CTIHITS graduate Stephan Moss, who embarked on a remarkable journey from a dishwasher to a Sous Chef at Aquapazza restaurant on Harbour Island.

“When I first arrived, I didn’t have any skills. I just watched how the chef moved and memorized what he put into his dishes. On my breaks, I would recreate what he made, and soon enough, I realized I was getting good at it.”

Determined to elevate his culinary skills, Stephan made a pivotal decision to enroll in the CTI-HITS Basic Culinary course. This decision marked a turning point in his life. The course gave him a solid foundation in culinary techniques, flavor profiles, and kitchen management skills. Under the guidance of seasoned professional instructors, Stephan honed his craft and gained the confidence to experiment with new flavor combinations and more challenging cooking techniques.

He describes it as a “culinary haven,” infusing the savory flavors of Bahamian cuisine with a dining experience that delights the senses and promotes sustainable and health-conscious eating choices.

Stephan recently took another stride toward success by enrolling in the CTIHITS Quickbooks 1 course. With his new accounting skills, he anticipates having a head start on managing his restaurant and a better understanding of his finances.

“It was my grandmother’s dream to open a restaurant. Now that she has moved on, I want to make it a reality for her,” says Stephen. As one of the many scholarship recipients of CTI-HITS, Stephan’s evolution is a testament to the transformative power of education and personal determination.

CTI-HITS Graduate – Basic Culinary Course Spring 2023 Poised with purpose and passion, Shantick Greenslade is quickly climbing the ranks at Valentines Resort and Marina following her graduation from the CTI-HITS Basic Culinary course.

“The culinary class at CTI raised my confidence and inspired me to want to become a Food and Beverage Manager. As I experience more and more of the cooking world, I know I want to be a bigger part of it.

When you do what you love, it doesn’t feel like work.

Now, my motivation is cooking, coming to work, and keeping the guests happy!”

As a single mother, Shantick took the lead in providing for her three children and landed herself a job as a dishwasher in the kitchen at Valentines Resort six years ago. Here, she keenly observed the kitchen chef skillfully working in his element and was soon inspired to join the line staff as a cook. Seeing her enthusiasm, the chef took Shantick under his wing and inevitably, her cooking skills improved over time. But this determined Hatchet Bay native knew she wanted more.

Becoming certified has brought Shantick one step closer to cooking up the life of her dreams for her and her children, and for this chance, she is grateful. “To anyone thinking about completing a CTI course, I’d say just do it! It’s an amazing learning experience. There’s everything to gain and nothing to lose.”

When the golden opportunity to join the CTI-HITS Basic Culinary Course on scholarship presented itself, this determined mom jumped at the chance to invest in herself and her future. Being in a structured environment supported by professional culinary instructors further unlocked Shantick’s potential. The course opened the doors for her to refine her cooking techniques and enjoy the dynamic of learning alongside

Shantick’s success journey continues. She is a testament to the power of passion, dedication and the pursuit of education. Her story serves to inspire young Eleutherans who dream of turning their passion into a rewarding profession, regardless of where they start.

Thriving Beyond the Storm Shenique Smith

CTI Learn and Earn Graduate – Hospitality Course 2023 Shenique Smith is the proud proprietor of “Neek’s Eats and Treats,” a quaint, down-home restaurant just beyond the beautiful Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera waterfront. If you visit there, two things will immediately stand out: the deliciously authentic Bahamian cuisine and Shenique’s warm and welcoming hospitality. Behind her light-hearted demeanor is a woman of grit and resilience who has successfully weathered some storms.

As a female entrepreneur in her mid-thirties, Shenique is keenly focused on taking her entrepreneurial dreams to their fullest potential. Looking at her thriving business and exuberant smile, it is astonishing to think that four short years ago, she experienced one of the greatest seasons of loss and devastation in her life. On September 1st, 2019, Hurricane Dorian struck the northwest Bahamas, completely flattening her hometown of Murphy Town, Abaco.

Overnight, Shenique was uprooted from her home, stripped of her business and every possession she owned. She was temporarily separated from her two young daughters as they were sent to safety with other relatives evacuating the island. Days later, she was reunited with her family when they landed on Eleuthera among a group of six hundred others seeking refuge. Here they were all welcomed by OEF and provided with lodgings, food, clothing, counseling, and all the necessary provisions to begin the long road to recovery.

In the ensuing weeks, to further assist OEF hired over a dozen of the evacuees to work at the organization’s social enterprises on the Rock Sound campus, including the restaurant and farm. Shenique was employed as a Line Cook in the restaurant and soon after promoted to Sous Chef. For her, this was an essential first step in rebuilding her life, livelihood, and dreams.

While working at OEF, Shenique received a scholarship to enter CTI’s “Learn and Earn” Hospitality course.

Seeing the rainbow after the storm, she decided to remain on Eleuthera and continue investing in herself and her vision of opening a restaurant. As a student of the program, she received a weekly stipend that allowed her to “earn as she learned.” She excelled and thrived in the course, sharpening her hospitality skills and regaining her momentum and independence.

The path to recovery and success was not easy for Shenique, but her amazing fortitude, inner strength, and entrepreneurial spirit prevailed, supported by the assistance provided by OEF. Today, she is a shining example of resilience and what can happen when you embrace new opportunities despite hardships, taking the chance to invest in yourself.

You will encounter bumps on the road to success and setbacks you didn’t expect, but never stop believing or pushing. Every setback is a setup for success. Keep investing in your dreams and have faith in God and your vision for your life.”

CTI Learn and Earn Graduates – First Cohort, 2017 refurbishing the hotel and building new furniture for the rooms using their trade skills.

Cercelia Thompson, Jermaine Deveaux, Anastacia Delancy, Tanya Delancy, Kenneth Jones, Lashanta Stuart and Evelyn Thompson all hold a special place in the annals of history at CTI. They were a part of the very first group of sixty students hailing from South Eleuthera to graduate from the Learn and Earn Program in 2017 who were offered full-time employment at the CTI training campus in Rock Sound. Today, they remain on staff and continue to work on the front lines, building our organization and supporting its social enterprises.

Anastacia, Tanya, Lashanta and Evelyn make up the powerhouse housekeeping department at The Retreat. They take pride in maintaining the very facility they helped to restore when the property was purchased and transformed into a training campus.“I love CTI. I love coming here to work every day, getting along with everyone and being a small part of the big difference OEF is making,” explains Tanya.

Powered by OEF, the CTI training campus is home to THE three social enterprises: a sustainable agriculture farm, a farm-to-table restaurant, and a hotel. Each acts as a training facility where CTI students fulfill the practical components of their Learn and Earn courses in a hands-on, supervised, real-world environment. The Retreat Hotel has sixteen charming, bungalow-style rooms. It is the country’s only training hotel. Nestled just a stone’s throw away is Farmer’s Table restaurant, which serves healthful, delicious meals incorporating fresh produce from the training farm located close by.

When an administrative position became available, she jumped at the chance to continue her professional development. Today, she works in the Finance department at OEF and credits much of her professional and personal growth to the opportunities afforded her.

“CTI took me out of the shy shell that I had built up around myself. I gained confidence and was way more skilled at doing things than I ever thought I would be.

The experience was one I didn’t think I would get to have, and now I can fix electrical issues around my house by myself without having to hire someone to do it for me. I like that CTI’s main focus is helping people to get more schooling, especially those who don’t finish high school.”

We are so proud of the strides our former students continue to take to improve their lives and livelihoods while building on the solid foundation that CTI has provided.

Into The Next Decade of Impact This past summer, The Bahamas proudly commemorated 50 years of Independence and nation-building. This momentous occasion ushered in joyous celebrations across the archipelago and invited our citizenry to envision what the “future Bahamas” can become and how the road and decisions made today will shape tomorrow.

Approaching One Eleuthera Foundation’s (OEF) 12th anniversary and steadily moving into our second decade, our leadership and board have been engaged in similar discussions. Looking closely at Eleuthera’s changing landscape, available resources, growing population, and evolving community needs, we are reshaping the role our work will play in moving our island and country forward. Collectively, we are positioning both OEF and Centre for Training and Innovation (CTI) for our most pivotal phase of impact and community development to date.

In evaluating Eleuthera’s shifting landscape, we are also anticipating how inside changes and exogenous shocks will continue to transform our island and local industries while taking a proactive approach in preparing Eleutherans for the road ahead. By fortifying existing and establishing new programs in our Five Key Areas of Focus - Economy, Education, Environment, Health and Heritage – we will continue to strengthen communities and cultivate innovative solutions to address local challenges.

This summer marked yet another historic event.

Our visionary founding President and CEO, Shaun Ingraham, passed the leadership baton to his successor, Keyron Smith. This move aligned the organizations’ succession planning, with the strategic goals for the second decade and beyond, positioning OEF and CTI for continued growth and forward momentum.

Eleuthera: A Changing Landscape & Growing Needs Rebounding from COVID-19 and Hurricane Dorian’s impact, Eleuthera has entered a phase of accelerated growth and development. The island has risen to the second most-visited destination in The Bahamas for foreign air arrivals, behind New Providence. The Ministry of Tourism has reported a 119.6% increase in tourism arrivals in 2022 compared to 2021. The increase in local construction projects has also resulted in more people moving to Eleuthera, placing a greater demand on resources. Recent upticks in development on the island have created opportunities for increased employment and entrepreneurship for Eleutherans, particularly in the construction, tourism, and hospitality industries. New developments, businesses and private organizations have also moved to the island to provide numerous services. However, with accelerated growth also comes challenges.

With new developments forging ahead, there is a shortage of skilled labor on the island to take advantage of the increased job opportunities in the industries highlighted above. There is also a greater demand to address food security and increase local food production to meet the dietary needs of a growing population and advance the goal of creating resilient, self-sufficient communities. Increased activity on Eleuthera has resulted in a greater energy demand that has led to crippling disruptions in both power and water supplies, negatively impacting households and stifling productivity and economic gains for local businesses. New developments and more job opportunities have also led to an influx of domestic and foreign job seekers. While we need a robust workforce to carry us forward, this influx has saturated

the housing market. Combined with the exponential growth of the local Airbnb market, securing affordable housing is a major problem for many, particularly lowincome families and single mothers.

We know that addressing these island-wide challenges will require immediate action alongside long-term planning, innovative solutions and productive partnerships with government, community stakeholders, and the private sector.

With Every Challenge, Comes New Opportunities OEF and CTI have always believed that with every challenge comes great opportunity. We are seeing access to new jobs, more training opportunities and healthcare investments that reduce the need for Eleutherans to travel to Nassau. With new growth, we see new opportunities for entrepreneurs and organizations like ours to meet the demand for affordable housing and improved food security, which are two of the most pressing needs. As with any economic “boom,” we must also find ways to ensure that the most vulnerable in our communities are not left behind or disenfranchised. And while there may be some short-term inconveniences and challenges we look forward to the re-creation of a multi-dimensional economy on Eleuthera with decent work and equitable opportunities for all.

Together, we must ensure that Eleutherans are poised to take advantage of emerging opportunities and that solutions are being put in place to address current and future needs for our collective, sustainable growth and prosperity. As we look toward FY24 and beyond, we have set our sights on a number of programs and projects connected to our Five Key Areas of Focus to help mitigate some of these challenges.

Economy Three Social Enterprises Fiscal year 2023 was a monumental year for OEF and CTI as we witnessed significant maturation of our three training social enterprises: The Farmer’s Table, The Retreat Hotel CTI and The Farm at CTI. These social enterprises are the “live labs” that help us to give people hands-on experiences in the vocational and technical trades so that Eleutherans can take advantage of the job opportunities available. Students earn a living while apprenticing in these social enterprises as part of their training courses. Over the next year, we will continue to make investments in these operations that will be the training and apprenticeship mecca for food service, hospitality, and farming professionals on Eleuthera now and for years to come.

Feed & Seed Food Hub As The Farm at CTI continues to expand we will focus our efforts on the next phase of this economic engine: the establishment of the “Feed & Seed Food Hub.” Through this packaging, processing and research facility CTI will empower local farmers to transform raw materials into value-added, marketable products, reducing post-harvest losses and increasing outcomes along with developing more resilient seeds for higher yields. The creation of this hub will also enhance our agricultural training capacity and ability to feed our growing population.

Community Grants to Local Organizations OEF is committed to supporting key community partners and other groups (e.g., teachers, nurses, community-based nonprofits, etc.) who are making essential contributions throughout Eleuthera. Through our Community Grants program we will continue to

work with local partners on programs and initiatives to uplift our communities and youth. As we have done since our inception, OEF remains committed to assisting and elevating new and existing nonprofits that need help with legal, compliance, strategic planning, funding, guidance and support.

Affordable Housing In recent years, OEF has been working with the University of North Carolina – Charlotte, Michael Singer Studio and the University of the Bahamas to develop new strategies and prototypes for affordable, sustainable housing on Eleuthera, with a special emphasis on providing access to single mothers and low-income families. OEF is actively seeking new grants and partners who can assist with this urgent need, given the shrinking housing market and projected growth for Eleuthera.

Education Vocational and Technical Training Empowering persons through education has been a primary focus for OEF and CTI for many years. OEF will remain committed to supporting CTI through strengthening and expanding training opportunities in culinary, hospitality, solarization, entrepreneurship and other vocational and technical training programs for North, Central, and South Eleuthera in the coming year. Our innovative Learn and Earn and Harbour Island Trade School (CTI-HITS) programs will launch new, diverse courses with a continued focus on increasing employment and creating more job placement and internship opportunities. Through strategic partnerships with hotels, restaurants and business owners our students will have a path to employment, study abroad opportunities and entrepreneurship.

Agriculture Training In FY24, CTI will introduce a new Learn and Earn Agriculture Apprenticeship Program which will focus on providing students with a one-year internship to gain practical training and knowledge in sustainable farming practices in our revolutionary Oasis Grow House, the country’s first automated, smart-technology cooling house. These apprentices will not only be educated on how to grow nutritious crops but will also form a network of highly skilled, young farmers who will strengthen the long-term viability of the agricultural sector and be mentored by experienced farmers in a hands-on “live lab” environment. These internships will also be in partnership with other educational and agricultural institutions.

Hospitality Training In the new year, CTI will also seek to complete the construction of a new Hospitality & Events Training Pavilion which will serve as our main training facility for hospitality and culinary trades. Given the growth of these sectors and the increasing demand for quality training, this new multi-purpose facility will be a much-needed addition to CTI’s campus. Students will have access to practical training while facilitating a wide range of events (e.g., weddings, concerts, food festivals, cultural productions etc.) to give them exposure and real-world experience.

Solar Powering the OEF/CTI Campus Inconsistent power supply on Eleuthera in recent months has made operating a training hotel, restaurant, farm, school and community campus much more difficult.

Currently, nearly 25% of the buildings on our CTI campus are solar-powered with off-grid and grid-tied systems.

In addition to training new technicians to work in this growing sector, we plan to implement solar photovoltaic systems on the remaining portions of our campus and facilities in the coming years. This will demonstrate our profound commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and mitigating climate change.

Solar Installation Training With the increased growth on Eleuthera, access to reliable, consistent power has become an even more vital resource. With more homeowners and businesses turning to solar power to meet their power generation needs, there is a demand for trained technicians to install and maintain these systems. To meet the need in this growing sector, CTI is making plans to train

Blue Economy In recent months, OEF and CTI have been collaborating on new beneficial initiatives impacting the Blue Economy. In FY24, we look forward to unveiling new programs focused on building capacity in this sector while also protecting and preserving our country’s vital marine resources.

Learn to Swim Program OEF looks forward to expanding its free, six-week Learn to Swim program in FY24. Over the last three years, our Learn to Swim summer program has expanded to over 80 children and adults learning vital life-skills in water safety, swim techniques, and drowning prevention.

While our swim program has been on our Rock Sound campus since its inception, we look forward to building the capacity of the program to offer more kids and adults an opportunity to learn these life-saving skills.

Promoting Community Health OEF and its partners remain committed to creating pathways to health and wellness for Bahamians.

Given the significant changes reshaping Eleuthera’s landscape and impacting our communities, OEF is increasing its capacity to meet growing demands, address challenges and help Eleutherans embrace current and future opportunities while staying true to our Shared Vision. Our extensive work over the past eleven years has created a firm foundation and the framework needed to scale our efforts and provide smart, holistic solutions on a larger scale. In particular, we are focused on:

Over the last year, Farmer’s Table training restaurant has been promoting healthier diets by providing nutritious, affordable food options for staff and the wider community. OEF will continue to support the local community by making our greens accessible and affordable to people in the community through The Farm at CTI. We envision that year-round access to nutritious foods will support community health and preventative dietary programs to help address dietrelated non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

Additionally, with the support of our partners at Emory University and Clemson University schools of nursing, OEF is exploring hiring a Community Health Coordinator to oversee and expand local health-related initiatives and increase health education. These programs will include other health sector partners both on the island and abroad.

Heritage OEF is dedicated to relaunching the Eleuthera Arts and Cultural Centre (EACC) in Tarpum Bay. As one of our founding partner organizations, the EACC will be revitalized to engage our community. Funds are actively being raised to hire a new Executive Director with a vision for turning this community asset into one of the premier arts and culture facilities in the country. This will make the Arts and Bahamian cultural knowledge more accessible to youth, residents and visitors. By taking action to preserve and pass down our rich heritage, traditions and culture, we are ensuring that future generations retain this historic knowledge while investing in the promising potential of Eleuthera’s Orange Economy.

OEF will continue to strive toward being the model for sustainable community development throughout The Bahamas and the Caribbean region.

Gregory & Darico Higgs

Nearly forty years ago, Gregory Higgs and two of his brothers started their business with just trade skills and a dream of building a remarkable company that would change the local industry.

Today, Higgs Construction is Harbour Island’s leading full-service construction company, bringing years of experience and an elevated standard of excellence to the industry. The company has taken on some of the most challenging and expansive projects on the island, earning a stellar reputation for delivering quality, professional services while paying exacting attention to details and each client’s unique needs.

Gregory and his family are avid believers in giving back.

They have been friends and supporters of One Eleuthera Foundation (OEF) and Centre for Training and Innovation (CTI) for many years. Gregory has previously served as a

GlobalGiving In recent years OEF has formed a strong partnership with the international nonprofit, GlobalGiving.

Based in Washington, DC, GlobalGiving raises funds from U.S. donors that are invested around the world when there are natural disasters, conflicts and other events that disrupt communities. Since 2002, GlobalGiving has raised more than $750 million from more than 1 million donors in support of 32,000 projects in 175 countries.

In the months following Hurricane Dorian’s landfall in Abaco and Grand Bahama, GlobalGiving sought out Bahamian nonprofits who were doing effective work and could be trusted to manage a sizeable grant. In light of Dorian’s devastating impact on the country’s economy and many of its residents, OEF and GlobalGiving agreed to a grant whereby OEF would work to accelerate the Bahamian nonprofit sector given the contributions that were going to be needed in the coming years.

Since Dorian, GlobalGiving has proven to be a reliable

Director on the OEF Board, while his son Darico serves as a Director on the Friends of Harbour Island Trade School (FHITS) board, which fundraises to provide technical training scholarships for CTI-HITS students. They both continue to contribute time, expertise, and financial gifts to CTI-HITS, recognizing the need to uplift youth, inspire hope and give back in a meaningful way to the community they call home.

This fiscal year, the Higgs family has contributed nearly $10,000 in financial donations, building supplies for our carpentry classes and other in-kind gifts. They have generously afforded space at Higgs Construction to conduct carpentry classes and have plans to provide CTI-HITS with a dedicated building in North Eleuthera to assist with expanding our construction trade training programs.

Their belief in our mission empowers us to push boundaries, defy odds, and create a brighter future for the youth of our island and country,” noted OEF President and CEO, Keyron Smith. partner, providing OEF with several other sizable grants to support long-term recovery efforts and a more robust disaster preparedness strategy for Eleuthera. “Many individuals and foundations donated generously in 2019-2020 to support our humanitarian efforts following Dorian, but GlobalGiving has been one of a handful of newer donors who have continued their support year after year,” noted OEF-US President, Lane Glaze. “It is a reminder of how often so much unforeseen good can come from some of the toughest of times.”

Their ongoing support has enabled us to deliver critical support to persons in need and other nonprofit organizations seeking to do impactful work.”

Diane, a Chartered Accountant, is a proud graduate of Preston H. Albury High and is passionate about Eleuthera and its unrealized possibilities. She currently serves as a consultant to a Family Office and project manager for The TK Foundation’s Disaster Relief Fund. She is a member of The Bahamas Institute of Chartered Accountants, the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, The Links Incorporated, a Director of the Public Hospitals Authority Foundation, and an officer of the 23rd Company Boys’ Brigade.

Cecil is a veteran Compliance, Anti-Money Laundering, Trust and Real Estate Professional, having spent over thirty years in the financial services sector of The Bahamas, with numerous, reputable organizations.

He holds several degrees from the University of The Bahamas, Taylor University, and Nova Southeastern University. Cecil served as a Foreign Service Officer to the U.S and United Nations.

Shaun Ingraham, Director

Shaun Ingraham is the co-founder of OEF and CTI and the past President of OEF. He was born and raised in Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera where he currently resides. Over the past 25 years, he has led disaster relief and economic and social development efforts for numerous national, regional and international development organizations in more than a dozen countries in Africa, Southeast Asia, North, Central and South America and the Caribbean. Shaun has won numerous awards for his community work including a national Cacique Award from the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, and the inaugural Community Impact Award from his alma mater, Emory University, Atlanta, GA.

Clifford has long been a key figure in The Bahamas’ public accounting profession, having held multiple leadership positions at Pricewaterhouse Coopers.

He has also served as a member of The Gaming Board from 1992-1995, the Securities Commission of The Bahamas from 1999-2001 and the Small Business Development Centre (Access Accelerator) from 2018-2021. He is also a member of the Bahamas Institute of Chartered Accountants and Chairman of the Royal Bahamas Police Force Dependants’ Trust.

Theo Neilly, Director

Theo is a long-time public servant, having spent most of the last two decades serving his community and country in local government and civil aviation. Later, Theo was elected a Member of Parliament, and most recently he has served as Consul General for The Bahamas in Washington, DC. A native of South Eleuthera, Theo is a Preston H. Albury High School graduate and later earned his Bachelor’s degree from Palm Beach Atlantic University and MBA from University of Liverpool (UK).

Anton Sealey, Director

Anton D. J. Sealey is a veteran of The Insurance industry of The Bahamas and now serves as Vice President and Director for Insurance Management (Bahamas) Ltd. In addition, Anton is the President of The Bahamas Football Association and serves in several capacities with both the regional governing body for football, The Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF), as a member of the Finance Committee and the world governing body, The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) where he serves as a member of The Members Association Committee.

Keyron Smith, President & CEO

Keyron Smith is the President and CEO of OEF and CTI. He spent his formative years in Lower Bogue, Eleuthera before pursuing higher education abroad.

Keyron holds a Master’s degree in governance and public policy from University of Manchester, UK, a Bachelor’s degree from University of The Bahamas (UB) and is also a certified Project Management Professional (PMP). He is the former Assistant Director of Grants and a Policy Fellow at UB and has been recognized with national leadership awards.

Mario Smith, Chair

With roots in Hatchet Bay, Eleuthera, Mario is the Chief Compliance Officer for RBC Dominion Securities Global Limited (Caribbean) and Regional Compliance - Caribbean. He holds degrees from Acadia University, Canada and the University of Manchester, UK. Mario also serves as a Director of CTI, as a member of the Board of Rotary Bahamas Disaster Relief and is a Past Assistant Governor for Rotary District 7020.

Corrine Abraham, Director

A nurse educator at Emory University since 1985, Corrine has coordinated student immersion experiences in Eleuthera since 2005. Corrine and her colleagues work collaboratively with the Ministry of Health and OEF to align goals and experiences with local needs.

She has received funding for two Emory Global Field Scholars grants exploring strategies to improve chronic disease management, including breast cancer, diabetes and hypertension. She also holds a joint appointment with the Atlanta VA Health Care System, where she coordinates efforts to improve the quality of care provided to veterans.

Former Chairman and CEO from Conco Cos., Rob holds degrees from University of Missouri-Columbia and Georgetown University. He is a big supporter of the arts in his hometown and has been an active member of the community on Eleuthera for the last few decades.

Sameer Bhatti, Treasurer

A native of New Providence, Sameer serves as the CEO for BTC after a ten-year stint with Comcast and more than thirty years in the industry. He holds degrees from Duke University, the University of Maryland, and the University of The Bahamas and has also completed training at both Harvard and Oxford.

His wife, Tricia, is a Pediatric Pathologist at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and shares his commitment to sustainable philanthropy focused on the Caribbean and Africa.

A retired nurse educator, Lynn and her husband Bob have been traveling and serving on Eleuthera for close to twenty years. As a three-time cancer survivor, Lynn has worked closely with those on the island experiencing cancer and helped start the first support group for women going through breast cancer. Lynn has an undergraduate degree in nursing and a Masters in Nursing Education from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She was honored by her alma mater with the Distinguished Nursing Alumni Award and the Humanitarian Award.

In 2012, Marjie worked closely with Tom Burns and Shaun Ingraham to launch OEF. She is President of a nonprofit college scholarship organization serving Native Americans and has served as a board member and Chair of the Board of the Claneil Foundation. Along with her extended family, Marjie has been coming to South Eleuthera for over 50 years.

Lane Glaze, President & Chair OEF-US

Lane first began traveling to Eleuthera in his capacity as an ordained United Methodist Campus Minister over 20 years ago. In 2016, he helped found One Eleuthera Foundation of the U.S. (OEFUS), a 501(c)3 based in the Carolinas. Since inception, OEF-US has assisted OEF by raising and granting more than $22 million to OEF and its partners. Formerly a CPA with Ernst & Young and COO of a private trust company, Lane also serves as a Professor of Practice in Nonprofit Leadership at Clemson University and Trustee for Spartanburg Methodist College.

With degrees from the University of Virginia and Vanderbilt University, Jeff is the Director of Consulting and Business Development at Sustainserv.com which is devoted to developing sustainability strategies and programs. He and his wife Sarah Scarborough were married on Eleuthera, a place that Jeff fell in love with years earlier.

Kim Williams-Pulfer, Secretary

Kim Williams-Pulfer, Ph.D. is the principal consultant of KWP Research Strategies LLC, a research consulting firm focused on community development, the arts, public humanities, and nonprofit and philanthropic management. From 2023-2024 she was an American Council of Learned Scholars (ACLS) fellow. In 202120222, she also served as an ACLS Leading Edge Fellow as Research and Evaluation Manager at The Hurston/ Wright Foundation. Dr. Williams-Pulfer holds a B.A. in Psychology from Taylor University, an M.A. in English from Butler University, a graduate certificate in Nonprofit Management from the Paul H. O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs, and a Ph.D. in Philanthropic Studies with a minor in Caribbean Studies from the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy.

Julian is a businessman and entrepreneur from Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera. He is the former President of the Eleuthera branch of the Rotary Club, where he has served as the Fellowship and Fundraising Chair since its inception. Julian is a devout community builder and operates the Tarpum Bay Shopping Center. An avid fisherman, Julian enjoys the great outdoors and organizes and hosts an annual fishing tournament in South Eleuthera, which promotes tourism on the island.

Reginald Eldon, Secretary

Dr. Reginald Eldon hails from The Current, Eleuthera and spent his career serving the Bahamas Conference of the Methodist Church in various roles including Youth Director, General Secretary and Dean of the Centre of Leadership. He later served as the Dean of Adult Education at Queen’s College in Nassau and as a Consultant for OEF. He is also a certified Grief Recovery Specialist and Spiritual Life Coach.

James Gomez, Treasurer

James has over 30 years working as a Chartered Accountant and Certified Insolvency and Restructuring Advisor and holds membership in numerous professional bodies, including the Bahamas Institute of Chartered Accountants, Association of Insolvency Restructuring Advisors, American Bankruptcy Institute and INSOL. James has substantial experience across several sectors, including public, financial services, tourism and leisure, and public tax policies. He is a proud descendant of Rock Sound, Eleuthera.

A Salute to Our Founder Visionary leaders see beyond the immediate and envision a future that is both innovative and impactful. They possess a deep understanding of their field or industry and can anticipate trends, challenges, and opportunities that others may not. They are driven by a clear and compelling vision and have the innate ability to inspire their team and stakeholders to rally behind a common goal. Shaun Ingraham is such a leader.

After thirteen years of disaster relief work, actively responding to some of the world’s most devastating catastrophes in Africa, Southeast Asia, North, Central and South America, and the Caribbean, Shaun returned home to his beloved settlement of Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera. His world exposure and extensive professional experience prepared him to look at the challenges facing his community and country in a new light.

As the founder of One Eleuthera Foundation (OEF) and the Centre for Training and Innovation (CTI), Shaun played a vital role in establishing both organizations’ vision, mission, and organizational infrastructure, centered on progressive, sustainable development.

During his tenure as President and CEO, he successfully positioned OEF and CTI as two of the country’s leading, impact-driven nonprofits, changing the trajectory of Eleuthera and elevating the country’s third sector. Leveraging his tactical problemsolving skills and network of international contacts and organizations, Shaun worked relentlessly to systematically address the island’s social, economic, and environmental challenges. He activated and connected community partners to provide critical services that filled gaps and served the most urgent needs of Eleutherans. Over time, and with each new successful problem-solving initiative, a blueprint for sustainable, reproducible community development for Eleuthera, The Bahamas, and other Small Island Developing States (SIDS) emerged.

Shaun recognized the power of nonprofits to build capacity, advocate for marginalized communities, solve complex challenges at the local level, and shape government policies. He became a leading voice and change agent in developing The Bahamas’ third sector, using his influence, relentless drive and wisdom to empower new leaders and improve the sector’s efficacy.

Over the years, Shaun received countless awards and both national and international recognition for his selfless work and visionary leadership, including a Cacique Award, the “Peter Christie Heart of Rotary” Award, and the inaugural Emory University Community Impact Award, bestowed by his Alma Mater.

On July 1st, 2023, Shaun passed the leadership baton to his successor, Keyron Smith – a native of Eleuthera, whom he prepared for the role by imparting strategic insights, fostering stakeholder relationships, and sharing institutional knowledge. This proactive planning ensured a seamless transition and ushered in the next exciting chapter for OEF and CTI. Shaun continues to prove that visionary leaders are not focused solely on the present. They are committed to setting long-term goals that drive sustainable growth and multiplying their impact and legacy through others.
