It’s often said that with more than 300 days of sunshine per year, Spain is an all-year round destination. It’s this beautiful climate, coupled with typically mild winters that also make southern Spain an all-year-round golf destination.

With beautiful views, cooling Mediterranean breezes and 70 clubs scattered along the coast, it’s little surprise that the Costa del Sol is considered one of Europe’s most important golf hubs and a Mecca for amateurs and pros alike. A quarter of Spain’s best clubs overall are located on the Costa del Sol and the region has attracted the attention of some of golf’s most accomplished course designers.

Alcaidesa and the surrounding area sits at the very heart of the golden triangle of golf, with numerous championship courses within putting distance. An abundance of manicured fairways, challenging tees, tricky bunkers and iconic holes promise an unforgettable experience, the majority of which have been set out by the best course architects in the world to challenge and test amateur players and decorated champions alike.

With the Costa del Sol home to the most intense concentration of golf courses in Europe, Alcaidesa is the perfect base thanks to its proximity to so many topflight courses (35 courses in 35 minutes drive), wealth of golf amenities and superb transport links.

Golfers keen to tick off a round or two at some of these prestigious clubs – or perhaps enjoy their own pilgrimage to each of Spain’s best courses - will be pleased to know that from Alcaidesa, it’s possible to go from home to green in mere minutes.

La Hacienda Alcaidesa Links Golf Resort A luxury resort in the making, La Hacienda Alcaidesa Links has recently undergone a huge transformation as it bids to become one of Europe’s top courses. The course sits in an enviable coastal location which affords golfers sweeping views of the Mediterranean, the Rock of Gibraltar and across to Africa.

Kurtis Bowman, a graduate of the famed Augusta course in the USA and formerly of Jack Nicklaus Design, was drafted in to reenvisage the course, which will formally re-open in July 2022. With new bunkers, tees and greens, plus a number of entirely new holes and rolling contours, the course has been given a world-class overhaul. The incredible ocean front links and uninterrupted sea views remain, but the addition of new facilities including an all-new club house, driving range, hotel and beach club make Alcaidesa a premium golf destination.

The world famous Valderrama will need no introduction to golf fans – and the good news for those who’ve dreamed of teeing off on its hallowed fairways is that it’s less than a 15-minute drive from Alcaidesa.

The storied Par 71 Championship Course has held the title of Europe’s No. 1 course in Europe for more than two decades and is also a contender for the global accolade of the same name.

Challenging, iconic and designed to tease out thought and precision from every golfer lucky enough to get in a round, the course was originally designed in 1974 by one of the titans of golf course design; Robert Trent Jones. In 1984, Jones returned once again to southern Spain with a new remit; to redesign his original layout to create a heavyweight course that would be globally recognised as one of the world’s best.

Valderrama has welcomed the who’s who of golf for decades. It’s been the course of choice for the PGA Volvo Masters a number of times, the Ryder Cup, the World Golf Championships and is a regular spot on the European tour. Although a private members club, you can play as a guest between 12.00pm and 2.00pm each day.

Finca Cortesin is one of a new breed of courses in southern Spain giving careful thought to sustainability.

It was the first in the country to use the eco-friendlier Bermuda grass in its greens, while those enjoying a round here will encounter almost two dozen different types of fauna, carefully chosen by landscaper Gerald Huggan.

Eminently accessible to players based in Alcaidesa, Finca Cortesin is also the course of choice for many notable championships, including twice hosting the prestigious Volvo World Match Play. In 2023, it will become the first Spanish course to host the Solheim Cup. For those who wish to brush up on their skills before taking on the challenge of Finca Cortesin, there’s a Nicklaus Academy on the grounds offering private and playing classes along with clinics and club fitting.

Real Club de Golf Las Brisas If further proof were needed of Alcaidesa’ s embarrassment of riches when it comes to its proximity to world-class golfing, it can easily be found at Real Club de Golf Las Brisas.

Real Club de Golf Las Brisas is one of no less than nine Robert Trent Jones designed courses to be found on the Costa del Sol, and conveniently less than a one-hour drive away.

It was here that Nick Faldo emerged victorious in the 1987 Open of Spain. This 18-hole course, which was updated by Kyle Phillips just ahead of its half-century anniversary, is as picturesque as it is challenging. Its fairways are framed by a beautiful botanical garden, featuring trees and plants carefully cultivated from each of earth’s continents and which accompany players around the course.

Real Club de Golf Las Brisas is a members-only club so you’ll need to apply if you want to tee off regularly or be invited as a guest of a member.

On the doorstep of Alcaidesa you’ll find yet another pivotal club designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones; Real Club de Sotogrande. What makes this club stand out is that it was the inimitable golf architect’s first ever European design. Of course, Jones went on to create eight other courses in southern Spain, meaning this could be one of several stops on your own journey to play each of his creations on the Costa del Sol.

A las puertas de Alcaidesa se encuentra otro de los clubs más importantes diseñado por el legendario Robert Trent Jones: el Real Club de Sotogrande. Lo que hace que este club destaque es que fue el primer diseño europeo del inimitable arquitecto de golf. Por supuesto, Jones llegó a crear otros ocho campos en el sur de España, lo que significa que esta podría ser una de las varias paradas en su viaje si desea jugar en cada una de sus creaciones en la Costa del Sol.

Opened in 1964, today’s course remains unmistakably in Jones’ vision with greens which merge effortlessly with the lush Mediterranean landscape. One of his own top five courses, Real Club de Sotogrande is challenging and enjoyable, suitable for players of all levels. It has been conquered by some of golf’s greats and seen the likes of Seve Ballesteros, Sergio García and Rory McIlroy crowned champions on its 72-par course.

San Roque

San Roque

At little over 10 minutes away, San Roque is widely considered to be yet another of the best in Spain, with two championship courses to choose from. The Old Course was originally designed by Dave Tomas, with the bunkers subsequently redesigned by Seve Ballesteros prior to hosting the 2005 Spanish Open. The challenging New Course is the work of Perry Dye and was opened in 2003, going on to host the Spanish Open in 2006.

Horses, polo and a spirit of improvement form a vital trinity for this renowned polo player of Portuguese origin, but a resident in the area for years. Gallego recognises that this destination has the best infrastructures on the continent for this exclusive sport and that polo has been a motivation to him to recover in record time from a tough fall and difficult injury.

Hello Diogo, it is a pleasure to have you among our pages, you are one of the most well-known polo faces in the area. Tell us about your beginnings and how you became a fan of this extraordinary sport.

It was when I was little and obviously through family influences, my father has played polo his entire life. I was a big fan of motorbikes but by the age of three I was already on a horse and soon after, the age of seven, I was trotting on the exercise area that we had at home [San Esteban, Lisbon – Portugal]. Thus, I gradually became a fan, acquiring skill and improving until I realised that polo and horses were my passion.

Caballos, polo y superación forman un triángulo vital para este reconocido polista, de origen portugués pero afincado en la comarca desde hace años. Gallego reconoce que este destino cuenta con las mejores infraestructuras del continente para este exclusivo deporte y que el polo le ha servido de motivación para recuperarse en tiempo récord de una dura caída y complicada lesión.

Muy buenas Diogo, es un placer tener en nuestras páginas, eres uno de los rostros más conocidos del polo en la zona. Cuéntanos como fueron tus inicios y cómo te aficionaste a este extraordinario deporte.

Fue de pequeño y obviamente por la influencia familiar, mi padre ha jugado al polo toda su vida. Yo era muy aficionado a las motos pero con tres años ya estaba subido a un caballo y poco después, no llegaría a siete años, ya estaba dando trotes en la pista de taqueo que teníamos en casa [San Esteban, Lisboa – Portugal]. De esa manera, poco a poco fui aficionándome, adquiriendo destreza y mejorando hasta darme cuenta que el polo y los caballos eran mi pasión.

You became a player at a very early age...

Te convertiste en jugador de una manera muy precoz…

Yes, I began accompanying my father at different tournaments, especially here in Sotogrande during summer, as we have had a family home for years here.

I played with him in the Low Handicap category, also in the Intermediate, aged 16/17, I replaced him for the first time in a High Handicap match in the Sotogrande International Tournament. There, I gradually developed and increased my passion for this sport and my desire to become a professional player. During that period, I was travelling between Portugal and Seville almost every week, where I played a lot of tournaments during the year. In summer, we came to Sotogrande, until finally I settled here for the convenience and its extensive season.

Sí, comencé acompañando a mi padre en diferentes torneos, especialmente aquí en Sotogrande durante el verano, ya que tenemos una casa familiar desde hace años. Jugué con él en el Bajo Hándicap, también en el Mediano e incluso, con 16/17 años, llegué a sustituirle por primera vez en un partido de Alto Handicap en el Torneo Internacional de Sotogrande. Ahí fui desarrollando e incrementando mi pasión por este deporte y el deseo de convertirme en jugador profesional. En esa época, ya estaba casi todas las semanas viajando entre Portugal y Sevilla, dónde disputaba muchos torneos durante el año, Los veranos acudíamos a Sotogrande hasta que finalmente me instalé aquí por la comodidad y su amplia temporada.

Do we live in a unique place for polo?

Absolutely. We live in the best European destination for enjoying polo. This area has the best pitches, clubs and facilities for competing in this top-level sport. Each year, it has a very extensive season, with very appealing tournaments for owners and important organisations and the most special and exclusive thing is that polo can be enjoyed twelve months a year, which is the case in very few places worldwide.

Your list of victories and trophy cabinet isn´t exactly short...

I have been lucky to enjoy tournaments in recent years and to accumulate important victories. Among the most notable, I can boast to have lifted three Gold Cups in Sotogrande (in the Low Handicap category).

I affectionately remember that of 2009 with L-14, where I played very well, or more recently that of 2018 with Sotoisola. I also like to highlight, when I assess victories and important moments, the small victories that, although not resulting in a trophy, have been a great source of pride, beating great players such as Polito Pieres or Panelo in important tournaments.

You are also an example of the spirit of improvement by recovering from a tough fall and subsequent injury.

Well, I try to progress each day with the motivation to be better, to give the best of myself and recover my best version since that fall in August 2019. It has been and still is a long and tough journey but I don´t lack enthusiasm and momentum. In February 2020 I was already riding horses, and after undergoing a new operation, during summer I was already hitting, even with the injured shoulder. There have been many obstacles, but I remain highly motivated to improve thanks to polo and competition, it is something that has helped me a lot. I know that every kilometre or match I add, is a step more that I am moving forward and improving.

¿Vivimos en un lugar único para el polo?

Absolutamente. Vivimos en el mejor destino de Europa para disfrutar del polo. Esta zona cuenta con las mejores canchas, clubes e instalaciones para competir en este deporte al máximo nivel. Presenta cada añon una temporada muy amplia, con torneos muy atractivos para patrones y organizaciones importantes y lo más especial y exclusivo, se puede disfrutar del polo los doce meses del año, algo que ocurre en muy pocos lugares en todo el mundo. ¿Tu palmarés y vitrina de trofeos no es precisamente corta?

He tenido la suerte de disfrutar muchos torneos en estos últimos años y acumular importantes victorias. Puedo presumir, entre los más destacado, haber levantado ya tres Copas de Oro en Sotogrande [en el Bajo Hándicap]. Recuerdo con cariño la de 2009 con L-14, que jugué muy bien, o más recientemente la de 2018 con Sotoisola. También me gusta resaltar, cuando hago balance de victorias y de momentos importantes, pequeños triunfos que aunque no hayan supuesto un trofeo, para mí ha sido un gran orgullo vencer a grandes jugadores como Polito Pieres o Panelo en torneos importantes.

También eres ejemplo de superación al recuperarte de una dura caída y posterior lesión.

Bueno, trato de progresar cada día con la motivación de ser mejor, de dar lo mejor de mí y recuperar mi mejor versión desde esa caída en agosto de 2019. Ha sido y es todavía un camino largo y duro pero no me faltan ganas e ímpetu.

En febrero de 2020 ya estaba montando a caballo, y tras someterme a una nueva intervención, durante el verano ya taqueaba hasta con el hombro lesionado. Han sido muchos obstáculos pero sigo con una gran motivación por mejorar gracias al polo y la competición, es algo que me ha ayudado mucho. Sé que cada kilómetro o partido que sumo, es un paso más que avanzo y mejoro.

I normally lead a very orderly and calm life, especially since my recovery. I like to go out to have dinner and go to the beach with my wife and family. We also spend a lot of time in the Alcaidesa area, which is very fun lately with the new beach bars and lots of pleasant places around the fantastic beach. I also like to go out walking or have a drink. I lead a calm life and it is rare that I am not always thinking about some question of how to improve my sporting level (laughs).

Suelo tener una vida muy ordenada y tranquila, especialmente desde mi recuperación. Me gusta salir a cenar e ir a la playa con mi mujer y la familia. Pasamos mucho rato también por la zona de Alcaidesa que está muy divertida en los últimos tiempos con los nuevos chiringuitos y muchos lugares agradables alrededor de esa fantástica playa. También me gusta salir a pasear o tomar algo. Llevo una vida tranquila y es raro que no ande dándole vueltas siempre a alguna cuestión de cómo mejorar deportivamente [ríe].

I am a big fan and I played loads before the injury. I loved to go and play the fantastic Links at La Hacienda, I know that now they have completely revamped it. It is a spectacular course with incredible views.

If I get off my horse and my stick is taken out of my hand, I lose everything. It is a very strong passion, a very important link and a lifestyle that I love and deeply respect. I hope to remain connected to the world of polo for many years, enjoying a place as incredible as this.

I believe there are many strengths, but our biggest asset is our staff. We employ passionate, inspirational staff, who go above and beyond to make the learning experience for students really engaging. When students are inspired, they travel on a journey with enthusiasm and determination. Connect this with our approach to teaching and learning through experiential learning or “learn by doing” and this active learning further drives learning. We are incredibly lucky to be very well resourced, so our learning environment allows students to experience learning in a number of different ways, using IT where needed to further enhance this.

We also teach students to be part of an inclusive society, where we don’t just educate about personal growth, but ask students to think about others. We call this the journey from ME to WE. Our driver for this is our NGO the Kindred Project which is an adult coordinated, student lead NGO, which gives students a voice to use education as a force for good in the world. We have a number of communities we work with around the world.

Giving students an opportunity to be actively involved in service learning really helps to create very well rounded global citizens.

· How is life in SIS boarding house?

The boarding environment at Sotogrande International School is incredibly inclusive. There are currently 107 boarders which are made up of 30 different nationalities.

The cohesion amongst the student body is remarkable and the environment creates lifelong friendships which are cemented both in the boarding house and during the holidays where students choose to visit each other.

This ensures a unique and exceptional learning and living environment for all. This outstanding atmosphere is cultivated internally but has also been recognised externally by the Boarding School’s Association who made SIS one of two finalists for the 2021 International Boarding School of the Year.

Boarding has progressively become central to the school’s identity and philosophy. This has resulted in a completely new boarding house being built for September 2022. The boarders are really looking forward to the new onsite provision and being able to use the school’s exceptional facilities throughout the evenings. This will sit wonderfully alongside the memory-making weekend provision where boarders have the opportunity to go surfing, sky diving, scuba diving, jetboating and city cycle tours (to name a few on the activities rota). SIS boarders are certainly not teenagers who have the opportunity to get bored and we take pride in developing passions and purposes outside the classroom as well as within it. · The school keeps growing and evolving every year, what is coming for next year?

Our evolution comes from a desire to firstly bring all of our learners onto our campus. This will learn that from September students from 4 months to 18 years old will be on one campus. Students from all ages will enjoy the facilities all day long, and for our boarding students in the evenings and during the weekends.

From a teaching and learning perspective, we are looking forward to driving our National and International trips, now that COVID-19 restrictions are reducing. This year we attended a football trip to Italy, where we came runners up and a sports trip to Murcia to compete against 3 other large schools. We are looking to extend these opportunities for students, with teams being entered for the International Schools Athletic Association competitions throughout the year. We will be launching a service learning trip to either Uganda or Ecuador for next year, we have a film trip to Hollywood planned and numerous local trips to really engage students.

From a facilities point of view, we are planning to enhance some of our sports facilities, expand out catering preparation spaces and make our campus run on solar power. We are an Eco school, and thus, trying to find sustainable ways to run our school not only models good values for our students, but also helps our planet.

El ambiente del internado en el Sotogrande International School es increíblemente inclusivo. En la actualidad, hay 107 internos de 30 nacionalidades diferentes. La cohesión entre el alumnado es notable y el ambiente crea amistades para toda la vida que se consolidan tanto en el internado como durante las vacaciones, cuando los alumnos deciden visitarse entre ellos.

El internado se ha convertido progresivamente en un elemento central de la identidad y la filosofía del colegio. Esto ha hecho que se construya un internado completamente nuevo para septiembre de 2022. Los internos están encantados con las nuevas instalaciones y con poder utilizar las excepcionales instalaciones de la escuela por las tardes. Esta actividad se complementa a la perfección con la oferta de fines de semana en los que los internos tienen la oportunidad de practicar el surf, el paracaidismo, el submarinismo, el jetboating y las excursiones en bicicleta por la ciudad (por nombrar algunas de las actividades). Los internos del SIS no son adolescentes que tengan la oportunidad de aburrirse y nos enorgullecemos de desarrollar pasiones y propósitos tanto fuera como dentro del aula. · El colegio sigue creciendo y evolucionando cada año, ¿qué novedades traerá el próximo curso?

Nuestra evolución proviene del deseo de, en primer lugar, traer a todos los alumnos a nuestro campus. De este modo, a partir de septiembre los alumnos de 4 meses a 18 años estarán en un solo campus. Los alumnos de todas las edades podrán disfrutar de las instalaciones durante todo el día, y, para nuestros alumnos internos, por las tardes y durante los fines de semana.

Desde el punto de vista de la enseñanza y el aprendizaje, estamos deseando retomar nuestros viajes nacionales e internacionales, ahora que las restricciones de COVID-19 se están reduciendo. Este año hemos viajado a Italia con el equipo de fútbol, donde quedamos subcampeones, y a Murcia para participar en una competición deportiva contra otros 3 grandes colegios. Queremos ampliar estas oportunidades para los alumnos, con la inscripción de equipos en las competiciones de la Asociación Atlética de Colegios Internacionales a lo largo del año. El año que viene haremos un viaje de aprendizaje de servicio a Uganda o a Ecuador, tenemos planeado un viaje a Hollywood y numerosos viajes locales para involucrar a los alumnos.

Desde el punto de vista de las instalaciones, tenemos previsto mejorar algunas de nuestras instalaciones deportivas, ampliar nuestros espacios de preparación de comidas y hacer que nuestro campus funcione con energía solar. Somos un colegio ecológico y, por lo tanto, tratar de encontrar fórmulas sostenibles que pueda poner en práctica nuestro colegio no solo modela buenos valores para nuestros alumnos, sino que también ayuda a nuestro planeta.

Looking further afield in the next few years, we really want to build a performing arts center. This year, we were lucky enough to put on a community performance of Grease the musical, which was enjoyed by over 1800 people over 3 performances. This raised over 9000€ for projects supported by the Kindred project. We wish to have a cutting edge, state of the art center for our students to further explore their artistic talents. Whilst this will be a few years in the planning and delivery, we are excited to engage architects next year to kick start this next project.

De cara a los próximos años, queremos construir un centro de artes escénicas. Este año hemos tenido la suerte de organizar una representación comunitaria del musical Grease, de la que han disfrutado más de 1.800 personas a lo largo de 3 representaciones. Se recaudaron más de 9.000 euros para los proyectos apoyados por el proyecto Kindred. Deseamos contar con un centro vanguardista y moderno para que nuestros alumnos puedan seguir explorando sus talentos artísticos.

BEST TIME TO VISIT Kiters will tell you that the absolute best time to visit is between May and October. On a bright, clear day you’ll see colourful kites dotting the sky, dipping and diving like an agile bird wheeling on the wind. The toothpaste blue waves, topped by white crests froth and foam at the crossroads of the two continents, were the Atlantic and Mediterranean converge.

BEST BEACHES FOR KITESURFING There’s around 35 km of coastline to choose from so even in the busier summer months, it’s possible to find a spot to take to the waves. Be mindful that some beaches prohibit kite surfing during the summer months until after 8pm in the evening but, there are beaches that don’t impose this rule.

The most popular spots are:

Los Lances Norte This is an all-year-round kite surfing hot spot, hit by both Levante and Poniente winds and there’s no limits on surfing in the summer months. It has kite surf and windsurf zones demarcated so you can launch and land back beachside. A boat rescue service patrols the sea so this spot is also suitable for beginners.

Punta Paloma If you want to head along the coastline a little, Punta Paloma is around 10km from town which is suitable for kite surfers of all abilities, including beginners.

Playa de los Valdevaqueros Right next door to Punta Paloma, you’ll find the long, sandy stretch of Playa de los Valdevaqueros, which also permits kite surfing year-round. With Levante and Poniente winds, this is a great spot to watch more experienced surfers perfect their craft if you’re not sure about taking to the waves yourself.

Playa Chica A popular family beach, Playa Chica prohibits kite surfing but when the wind picks up you’ll see the sky filled with kites as seasoned pros take advantage of the strong Levante winds. It’s a tougher spot and not recommended for beginners but a great option if you want to see the pros at work.

Balneario This beach sits next door to Playa Chica. It permits kite surfing outside of the summer season but is often hit by very strong Levante winds due to its proximity to the Strait of Gibraltar so don’t attempt to surf here unless you’re very experienced.

En un día claro y luminoso, verás cometas de colores que salpican el cielo, sumergiéndose y buceando como un ágil pájaro. Las impresionantes olas azules coronadas por crestas blancas espuman en la encrucijada de los dos continentes, donde convergen el Atlántico y el Mediterráneo.

LAS MEJORES PLAYAS PARA EL KITESURF Hay unos 35 km de costa para elegir, así que incluso en los meses de verano más concurridos, es posible encontrar un lugar para lanzarse a las olas. Ten en cuenta que algunas playas prohíben el kitesurf durante los meses de verano hasta después de las 8 de la tarde, pero hay playas que no imponen esta norma.

Punta Paloma Si quieres continuar explorando la costa, Punta Paloma está a unos 10 km de la ciudad y es adecuada para los amantes del kitesurf de todos los niveles, incluidos los principiantes.

Playa de los Valdevaqueros Justo al lado de Punta Paloma, se encuentra el largo tramo de arena de la Playa de los Valdevaqueros, que también permite la práctica del kitesurf durante todo el año. Con vientos de Levante y Poniente, este es un gran lugar para ver a los surfistas más experimentados perfeccionar su arte si no te atreves a surfear tú mismo.

Playa Chica Playa Chica, una popular playa familiar, prohíbe el kitesurf, pero cuando el viento se levanta verás el cielo lleno de cometas, ya que los profesionales experimentados aprovechan los fuertes vientos de Levante. Es un lugar más difícil y no se recomienda para los principiantes, pero es una gran opción si quieres ver a auténticos profesionales.

Balneario Esta playa se encuentra al lado de Playa Chica. Permite la práctica del kitesurf fuera de la temporada de verano, pero suele sufrir vientos de Levante muy fuertes debido a su proximidad al Estrecho de Gibraltar, así que no intentes surfear aquí a menos que tengas mucha experiencia.

CATCH A CHAMPION IN ACTION Thanks to its pro kitesurfing culture, a number of competitions and events take place in Tarifa, especially through the summer months. One of the standout dates for 2022 is the arrival of the GKA Big Air World Championships, which take place between June and July.

For a town that is mad about kiting, it takes on a whole new level of intensity when the championships roll in.

Spain Kiteboarding League (September) The Spain Kiteboarding League championships typically roll into town at the start of September and bring together around 70 riders from over a dozen countries duke it out for the mantle of best freestyler. Hosted to Ensenada de Valdevaqueros, this event attracts a huge crowd of spectators and an electric atmosphere.

A youth championship also runs concurrently, with brave young surfers from just 8 years old showing off their skills.

Formula Kite Spain (December) As winter sets in and the temperatures cool, it takes a hardy surfer to venture out but that’s exactly what happens every December at the Formula Kite Spain contest. This content is a formula 1 kitesurfing style, which was an exhibition sport at the delayed 2020 Olympics and Tokyo. It will officially become an Olympic sport at the Paris Olympic Games in 2024 so expect some of the best in the world to be in attendance as they prep for Paris.

DISFRUTA DE UN CAMPEONATO EN VIVO Gracias a su cultura pro kitesurf, en Tarifa se celebran numerosas competiciones y eventos, especialmente durante los meses de verano. Una de las fechas destacadas para 2022 es la llegada de los Campeonatos Mundiales GKA Big Air, que se celebran entre junio y julio. Para una ciudad que gira alrededor del kitesurf, ésta adquiere un nuevo nivel de intensidad cuando llegan los campeonatos.

Spain Kiteboarding League (septiembre) Los campeonatos de la Spain Kiteboarding League suelen llegar a la ciudad a principios de septiembre y reúnen a unos 70 riders de más de una docena de países que se disputan el título de mejor freestyler. Celebrado en la Ensenada de Valdevaqueros, este evento atrae a una gran multitud de espectadores y se respira un ambiente eléctrico.

Paralelamente, se celebra un campeonato juvenil en el que valientes surfistas a partir de 8 años demuestran sus habilidades.

Formula Kite Spain (diciembre) Con la llegada del invierno y la bajada de las temperaturas, hay que ser un surfista resistente para aventurarse, pero eso es exactamente lo que ocurre cada diciembre en la competición Formula Kite Spain. Esta competición alberga la modalidad de kitesurf conocida como fórmula 1 que fue un deporte de exhibición en los Juegos Olímpicos de 2020 y Tokio. Se convertirá oficialmente en un deporte olímpico en los Juegos Olímpicos de París de 2024, por lo que es de esperar que algunos de los mejores del mundo estén presentes mientras se preparan para París.

Celebrated across Barbate, Zahara de los Atunes, Conil de la Frontera, and Tarifa, the fair draws visitors from all across the world, along with upwards of 400 seasonal fisherman and tuna experts .

Es un momento en el que la gastronomía, la historia y la rica tradición se unen para crear un evento sin igual: la Feria del Atún. Celebrada en Barbate, Zahara de los Atunes, Conil de la Frontera y Tarifa, la feria atrae a visitantes de todo el mundo, junto con más de 400 pescadores de temporada y expertos en atún.

Many towns along the coast join in the celebrations, with the smell of freshly cooked fish filling the air as local chefs showcase their mastery with cookery demonstrations and tastings.

Spain’s Iconic Bluefin Tuna Bluefin tuna - known as ‘atún rojo’ in Spanish thanks to the deep red colour of the meat - is an Atlantic fish that, like many of us, spends its summers in the Mediterranean.

One of the biggest species of tuna in the world, this catch of a lifetime can weigh as much as 680kg.

What’s the best way to enjoy bluefin tuna during the festival? Local cafes and restaurants cook it in a huge range of different ways. Some will opt for more traditional preparations, while others will experiment with out-ofthe-box new ideas to wow the gourmets who descend on Cadiz to celebrate this remarkable fish.

Some of the most popular ways to sample the fish include tuna tartare, a blissfully fresh fusion where Spain meets Japan in an Asian-inspired dish featuring raw bluefin tuna. Purists might find themselves drawn to the more traditional atún en Manteca, a tuna and butter dish that’s slathered in a generous helping of lard.

Honouring the Almadraba Tradition

While tuna is the star of the show, the Feria del Atún doesn’t just celebrate this delicious seafood; it also honours the traditional method of catching it: almadraba.

Aunque el atún es la estrella del espectáculo, en la Feria del Atún no solo se celebra este delicioso pescado, sino que también se rinde homenaje al método tradicional de captura: la almadraba.

Now considered to be an artisanal form of fishing, this method is only practised in four Spanish towns; the towns hosting the annual celebratory events. The nets act as a guide, funnelling the fish towards a ‘copo’ or centralised area surrounded by boats. In a truly spectacular fashion, the nets are lifted, and the selected fish are transferred to the boats. The remaining fish are released back into the sea.

The nets are set up every year following May’s first full moon, marking the start of the annual celebrations.

These are known as ‘paso’ almadraba, as they catch fish heading out to the Mediterranean from the Atlantic. In autumn, ‘di corsa’ nets may be set up to catch tuna as they make their return. However, with the fish being less fatty at this time of year - and therefore less tasty - there is not the same level of fanfare. Much of the tuna caught at this time of year is used for canned goods.

Festival Highlights From start to finish, there’s never a dull moment at the Feria del Atún celebrations. There are, however, a couple of stand out highlights that visitors can’t afford to miss.

The first is the ronqueo demonstration. Ronqueo is the traditional way to slice bluefin tuna. Considered to be a true art - and one that’s difficult to get right - the method involves quartering the fish along different muscles. This technique uses almost all of the fish, leaving little to no wastage.

The second unmissable highlight is known as Rutas del Atún, or Tuna Routes. Each town will have their own routes set up… or sometimes more!

Considerada actualmente como una forma de pesca artesanal, esta modalidad solo se practica en cuatro localidades españolas, que son las que acogen las celebraciones anuales.

Las redes actúan como guía, dirigiendo a los peces hacia un copo o zona centralizada rodeada de barcos. De forma realmente espectacular, las redes se levantan y los peces seleccionados se transfieren a los barcos. Los peces restantes se devuelven al mar.

Las redes se colocan cada año tras la primera luna llena de mayo, lo que marca el inicio de las celebraciones anuales. Se les conoce como almadraba de paso, ya que capturan los peces que se dirigen al Mediterráneo desde el Atlántico. En otoño, se pueden instalar redes «di corsa» para capturar atunes en su regreso. Sin embargo, al ser el pescado menos graso en esta época del año y, por tanto, menos sabroso, no hay el mismo nivel de revuelo. Gran parte del atún capturado en esta época del año se destina a las conservas.

Lo más destacado de la feria De principio a fin, nunca hay un momento aburrido en las celebraciones de la Feria del Atún. Sin embargo, hay un par de puntos destacados que los visitantes no se pueden perder.

La primera es la demostración del ronqueo. El ronqueo es la forma tradicional de cortar el atún rojo. Considerado como un verdadero arte, y uno difícil de conseguir, el método consiste en trocear el pescado a lo largo de diferentes músculos. Esta técnica aprovecha casi todo el pescado, dejando poco o ningún desperdicio.

El segundo punto de interés ineludible es el conocido como Rutas del Atún. Cada ciudad tendrá sus propias rutas establecidas... ¡o a veces más!

A residential area built to a high quality, an orography that makes us unique, offering enjoyable views from almost anywhere and finally, something that was still needed, services providing residents and visitors with access to restaurants, a supermarket, a pharmacy, a gym, etc.

It is very difficult to find someone with this determination and courage to undertake one of the most important projects in Andalusia and in Spain.

From the outset he was convinced that Alcaidesa was the ideal place to run a luxury resort, and so that is what we are doing.

Desde luego la apuesta es firme, es un regalo para todos los que disfrutamos Alcaidesa la llegada de Millenium y en concreto de nuestro Presidente, Javier Illán. Es muy difícil encontrar a alguien con esa determinación y valentía, para acometer unos de los proyectos más importantes de Andalucía y de España.

As you know, not only is this a 5* Hotel Project, but there will also be 51 Luxury Villas, Restaurants, a Beach Club, a Sports Zone with Fitness Rooms and a Spa, and not forgetting the improvement of our Links Golf Course.

As I said before, one of the shortcomings that the resort had always had, was the lack of services and, fundamentally, quality restaurants. In this regard, we will create some new restaurants. In addition to our restaurant at the Golf Club and the beach bar, both managed by the Azotea Group, there will be a new restaurant in the sports complex, at least three more in the hotel, another one at the beach club, and a café between holes 10 and 11 of the Links course, which will have spectacular views.

Como decía antes, una de las carencias que siempre había tenido el resort, era la falta de servicios y, fundamentalmente, una restauración de calidad. En ese sentido, nosotros vamos a crear nuevos restaurantes, a nuestro restaurante del Club de Golf y al chiringuito de la playa, gestionados ambos por Azotea Grupo, se unirán, un nuevo restaurante en el complejo deportivo, al menos 3 más en el hotel, otro en el beach club, y una cafetería entre los hoyos 10 y 11 del Campo Links, que tendrá unas vistas espectaculares.

• The comprehensive rehabilitation and redesign of the Links course, one of the courses with the best views of southern Europe, position it as a reference point with regards its design, quality and maintenance. How has the process gone?

Hard, without a doubt it’s been hard, but at the same time it’s been very rewarding. Within Javier Illán’s great commitment to Alcaidesa, the reform of the Links course has been both a success as well as a huge challenge.

• La rehabilitación integral y rediseño del campo Links, uno de los recorridos con mejores vistas del sur de Europa, lo posicionan como un referente a nivel de diseño, calidad y mantenimiento. ¿Cómo ha sido el proceso?

Duro, sin duda ha sido duro, pero a la vez muy gratificante. Dentro de la gran apuesta de Javier Illán en Alcaidesa, la reforma del Links ha sido todo un acierto y a la vez un reto importantísimo.

Given the quality of the resort that is being created, we saw the need to improve our Golf course’s facilities, starting with the Golf Club itself, with the refurbishment of the restaurant and now the Proshop, and of course, our emblematic course.

Dada la calidad del resort que se está ejecutando, vimos la necesidad de mejorar nuestras instalaciones de Golf, comenzando por el propio Club de Golf, con la reforma del restaurante y, ahora del Proshop, y como no, de nuestro campo emblemático.

I say that it’s been hard because we have carried out some of the works in record time, and as you know, no works are easy, but when on top of this we set ourselves such short deadlines, then it becomes more complicated.

However, I must thank all those who have contributed to this work for their efforts and firm commitment to achieving a successful outcome, both the construction companies as well as the Project Management company (Acttua) and, of course, the Alcaidesa team in particular.

Digo que ha sido duro porque hemos ejecutado unas obras en tiempo record, y como sabéis, ninguna obra es fácil, pero si encima nos autoexigimos plazos tan cortos, pues se complica más. Pero tengo que agradecer a todos los que han intervenido en esta obra, el esfuerzo y la apuesta firme para llegar a buen fin, tanto a las empresas constructoras, como a la Dirección facultativa (Acttua) y, como no, en especial al equipo de Alcaidesa.

• The resort forms part of the select group of the European Tour Destinations for Golf… how has this opportunity arisen?

Within our plans to relaunch La Hacienda as a quality destination, belonging to ETD is certainly a quality hallmark. Leaving Cortesín after years as a member, opened up the possibility of us entering the ETD, and we have no doubt that we want to belong to that select group of high-level golf destinations worldwide.

The welcome has been amazing, and they are certainly helping us to achieve our great challenge of making improvements each day and providing excellence in service, given that in terms of facilities we are already achieving this. If we want to be one of the best, we must be with them.

• One Eden always commits to quality, these are projects that move in the same direction and with the same idea to offer the best level. What do you think about this?

I honestly believe that the arrival of One Eden has been very timely. As you know, there were some empty plots within the Residential Area and it is a unique opportunity to execute a high-quality development, especially considering the positioning we are seeking. So, it’s a perfect complement that will undoubtedly benefit from new clients who will come to enjoy our golf resort and, to answer your question, yes of course, we both seek quality and a high level to offer our clients.

• Can the synergy between La Hacienda Alcaidesa Links Golf Resort and One Eden make this a renowned destination for the whole of Europe?

Of course it can, after seeing the initial steps of the One Eden project, creating value in the resort, with new shops, restaurants, etc., and creating high-quality residential areas, it will certainly help to position the residential segment as a quality destination. Additionally, important synergies will be created between the two projects which, as I said, will take us to a level of quality that will be good for everyone.

• Forman parte del selecto grupo del European Tour Destinations de Golf…. ¿cómo surge esta oportunidad?

Dentro de nuestros planes para relanzar La Hacienda como un destino de calidad, sin duda pertenecer a ETD es un distintivo de calidad. La salida de Cortesín tras años como miembro, nos abrió la posibilidad de entrar, y no dudamos en querer pertenecer a ese selecto grupo de destinos de Golf de alto nivel mundial.

La acogida ha sido increíble, y sin duda nos están ayudando mucho a conseguir nuestro gran reto de mejorar diariamente y llegar a la excelencia en el servicio, ya que en cuanto a instalaciones lo estamos consiguiendo. Si queremos ser de los mejores, debemos estar con ellos.

• One Eden apuesta siempre por la calidad, son proyectos que avanzan en el mismo sentido y con la misma idea por ofrecer el mejor nivel, ¿qué le parece?

Sinceramente, la llegada de One Eden creo que ha sido muy oportuna. Como sabéis había algunas parcelas sin edificar dentro de la Urbanización y, es una oportunidad única para llevar a cabo un desarrollo de alta calidad, máxime con el posicionamiento que nosotros buscamos.

Así que, es un complemento perfecto que, sin duda, se podrá beneficiar de los nuevos clientes que llegarán a disfrutar de nuestro resort de Golf y, a la pregunta, si, por supuesto, ambos buscamos la calidad y un alto de nivel que ofrecer a nuestros clientes.

• ¿La sinergia entre La Hacienda Alcaidesa Links Golf Resort y One Eden puede convertir este destino en un referente de toda Europa?

Claro que sí, tras ver los primeros pasos del Proyecto de One Eden, creando valor en el resort, con nuevos comercios, restaurantes, etc… y creando residenciales de alta calidad, sin duda va a ayudar a posicionar el segmento residencial como destino de calidad. Y entre ambos proyectos se crearán sinergias importantes que, como decía, nos llevaran a un nivel de calidad que será bueno para todos.

By Ferry From Algeciras: A number of ferry companies operate from Algeciras to Tangier, with around 26 sailings per day. From Tarifa: There are up to 12 sailings a day from Tarifa to Tangier, with sailings taking approximately one hour. From Gibraltar: There is also one line operates from Gibraltar to Tangier, currently this route is only served on Fridays.

There are no direct flights from Gibraltar to Morocco but if you don’t mind travelling to Malaga, both Royal Air Maroc and Iberia operate a select number of direct flights to a handful of destinations in Morocco, including Tangier and Casablanca.

There are a couple of malls too, including the modern Socco Alto with national and international brands.

The medina A stroll through the old town is a must for any first-time or returning visitor to Tangier. A network of azure and whitewashed buildings, expect street vendors touting just about everything you can imagine, baskets spilling over with dried fruits and aromatic spices, shops packed with locals getting their daily essentials, bakeries scenting the air with the hunger-inducing smell of fresh bread and warm sugar – and all contained within the walls of a 15th Century fortress.

The Caves of Hercules and Cap Spartel Combine a trip to the Caves of Hercules with a visit to Cap Spartel. Don’t miss a walk to the lighthouse for great views across the Atlantic.

Chefchaouen If you’re looking for a slower pace of life and want to go off the beaten path in Morocco, the stunning azure mountain town of Chefchaouen is also accessible by road after getting off the ferry in Tangier. Situated in the Rif Mountain, this 15th century Berber town is eminently Instagram-ready thanks to its dazzling sea of azure buildings.

Asilah Also accessible as a day trip from Tangier is the beach resort of Asilah. A formerly Spanish territory, this town is best visited in summer. Its food culture is reflective of its Spanish past with riojas and tortillas gracing many a restaurant menu. Another great reason to visit Asilah is its beaches, which are especially popular with surfers.
