YOUNG CRE ATIVE S 10TH ANNIVERSARY

C E LEBRATION

Tuesday 15 May 2018 Royal Opera House

WELCOME

I have had the pleasure of working on the Young Creatives programme since it began in 2008. Born out of a recognition that there were insufficient opportunities for young people to develop their choreographic skills and ideas, Young Creatives quickly found its place in the hearts and minds of dance teachers and young people across the country. I have witnessed some incredible moments over the years; the brave and inspiring work and the young people who have awoken to the possibilities that creating their own dance can bring.

Since 2008 the youth dance and dance education landscape has changed, but young people are still looking for opportunities to exercise their creative talents – indeed perhaps more so than ever. At One Dance UK we will continue to advocate for young people’s dance and create opportunities where there are gaps. In the meantime, I look forward to seeing the Young Creatives alumni flourish as todays’ artists and choreographers.

The Royal Opera House is delighted to host the 10th anniversary celebration of Young Creatives, having been part of this inspiring programme with One Dance UK for nearly 10 years. Artists of The Royal Ballet and ROH dance practitioners have shared their practice with the Young Creatives and the new choreography has been performed at the Royal Opera House. The Young Creatives programme enables young choreographers to explore their creative ideas, reflect on their practice and define their choreographic style. Being part of this programme provides ROH with the opportunity to extend support to the next generation of choreographers, from diverse backgrounds all over the country, practising in a breadth of dance styles. It is exciting to see new and innovative talent emerging and to position the artists, practice and repertoire of The Royal Ballet as a key component to nurture that talent.
