NEW FUNDING BOOST
RECORD high temperatures were enjoyed in Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge on Bank Holiday Monday [May 7]. Highs of 28.7°C (83.66°F) were felt in parts of the South East, making it the hottest May Day Bank Holiday on record, according to the Met Office. It was at least 20°C (68°F) for much of the day in local towns, with similar weather on Saturday, Sunday and also yesterday [Tuesday, May 8]. Crowds looking to cool down were turned away from Tonbridge Swimming Pool at times on Monday, with the facility operating at full capacity. At some points residents looking to swim faced a wait of more than two hours to be allowed to enter. The heat also made for testing conditions for the competitors in Monday’s Tonbridge Triathlon [see P70].

One in four people voted for Alliance where candidates stood By Jonathan Banks newsdesk@timesoftunbridgewells.co.uk
THE new political party Tunbridge Wells Alliance, that was launched just ten weeks ago, has hailed its success at last week’s borough council elections as ‘an incredible achievement’. It took one seat from the Conservatives and came second in four other wards. Across the seven seats where it put forward candidates the Alliance attracted 2,782 votes out of the 11,230 that were cast. This represents just under 25 per cent
and means one in four of those who had the chance to support the new party did so.
Alliance founding member Nick Pope has his cake and eats it The Alliance was established to primarily oppose plans to spend £90million on the new Civic Com-
plex and theatre on land adjoining Calverley Grounds. Speaking for the Conservatives Cllr Tracy Moore told the Times yesterday: “For perspective, the Alliance contested seven seats and succeeded in only one, Park ward, in which the civic development is meant to be located. “This is understandably a highly emotive proposal for the near neighbours and the election result is partly a consequence of that.
“But I also think the lesson learned is we must redouble our efforts to engage with the community, and do a better job of explaining the benefits of the project both now, and for the future prosperity of the town.” Alliance founding member Nick Pope won Park ward by 143 votes, from Catherine Rankin, who had warned the Alliance during the campaign that it was breaking election law by handing out fairy cakes; a move that could have been seen as treating potential voters.
