Student who took his life over exam fears got top mark

TEENAGER Matthew Mackell took his own life because he feared his chances of getting a good A-level score would be hit by lockdown. But when results were announced last week it emerged that he got a top mark. The body of Matthew was found by police in Dunorlan Park on May 7. The Skinner’s Academy pupil had hanged himself over fears lockdown would mean his schooling would suffer and he would ‘end up in a dead-end job’. But the father of the 17-year-old has told the Times that his son’s fears were groundless as he received an A grade for one of his subjects.

LATEST figures show that Tunbridge Wells is among the districts in Kent with the lowest reported cases of coronavirus. It is also significantly below the national average per head of the population. Just three people tested positive for the virus that causes Covid-19 in figures released last Friday [August 14]. The figures, for the seven days to August 11, are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government’s testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two). Only Swale had fewer cases in Kent, with just one positive test. So far, around 501 people in Tunbridge Wells have tested positive for coronavirus, or 422 people per 100,000 head of population – well below the national

average of 488 per 100,000. As of Friday, there have been 8,347 positive cases in Kent so far, or 527 for every 100,000 people. Tonbridge & Malling saw seven people test positive for the virus, double the pre-

‘We appeal to residents to follow the guidance should they be contacted’ vious seven days, according to last week’s figures – although the borough has the lowest levels of positive tests in the county, with just 372 cases – or 281 per 100,000 people. Across the UK, a total 318,484 people have tested positive for coronavirus. Northampton has the highest rate of

infections, thanks to an outbreak at the Greencore sandwich factory in the town. A total of 260 new cases were recorded in Northampton in the seven days to August 11, the equivalent of 115.8 per 100,000 people – up from 34.7 in the previous seven days to August 4. Kent County Council’s Director of Public Health, Andrew Scott-Clark, said testing in the county had been ‘ramped up’ but urged people in the area to still be mindful of the virus. He said: “We have increased our testing capacity so that we are able to identify and confirm cases in our community and support the NHS Test and Trace programme. “We appeal to residents to follow the guidance should they be contacted by NHS trace. This will hall help us control the spread of the virus.”
