Artistic Director’s Introduction Welcome to our Autumn season, always the highlight of our year. Bookending the season are two professional productions – first, my production of The Producers brings another West End and Broadway hit to the Trinity stage. Then, over Christmas, I’m thrilled that we can bring to Trinity the new musical adaptation of Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in The Willows. It’s a terrific show that takes a fresh and tuneful look at this timeless classic and has a script by Downton Abbey’s Julian Fellowes. We continue to present a vibrant and varied film programme under the expert guidance of our film programmer – bringing you the best of independent and world cinema. In spite of all the plans, we remain the only cinema in town! You’ll only find our September and October films listed here, so watch out for the announcement of our November films later in the year – make sure to sign up to our mailing list via our website so that you’ll be the first to know! Our youth theatre continues to grow and do great things both onstage and off, bringing the Terry Pratchett classic Mort to Trinity this season. We believe we have a vital role to play in the community, and continue to do this via our Senior Cinema programme, Speech Bubbles work with children and, working with the Assembly Hall Theatre, jointly providing a free youth theatre in Sherwood. We also have exciting plans for developing our building and I hope that we will be in a position to share these with you shortly. That we do all this in the face of declining funding and increasing costs is, I think, a minor miracle! We cannot do this without your help – both by coming to see things here, and by making donations. This forms a vital part of our income and I would ask you to please consider making a donation to us whenever you book a ticket. Another way of supporting us is to become a Friend of Trinity – that way not only will you be able to save money on tickets and pay no booking fees (amongst many other benefits) – but you will also be able to engage more with us and help shape our future. As ever I welcome your views and feedback. Please feel free to email me at: john@trinitytheatre.net John Martin Artistic Director

Mayerling

Die Walküre

The Nutcracker

Mayerling is a classic of the Royal Ballet repertory, with its emotional depth, haunting imagery, and one of the most demanding roles ever created for a male dancer. Kenneth MacMillan choreographed a complex work around the psychologically tormented heir to the Habsburg Empire, Crown Prince Rudolf. From the ballet’s start, the glamour of the Austro-Hungarian court is contrasted with undercurrents of sexual and political intrigue that drive the story to its violent climax in a double suicide.

Wagner’s Ring cycle is one of the greatest works of all opera. Keith Warner’s production is conducted by Antonio Pappano, and this final revival is cast with an outstanding international array of Wagnerian specialist singers. The full cycle’s four operas journey from the beginning of a world to its destruction, with gods, heroes and monsters. This epic myth portrays every type of human emotion in music and ideas of extraordinary power. Once experienced, never forgotten; Die Walküre is the second opera in the cycle, and features several of the Ring’s musical highlights

The Nutcracker has long been one of the most delightful ways to discover the enchantment of ballet – and makes for a delicious seasonal treat for all the family. Tchaikovsky’s much-loved music is matched to a magical adventure on Christmas Eve for Clara and her Nutcracker doll. Their journey to the Land of Sweets brings with it some of the most familiar of all ballet moments, such as the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Waltz of the Flowers.

Simon Evans: Genius Thu 25 Oct | 8pm

Ever since he was a small boy, all Evans really wanted was to be recognised by the world as a man of genius. He has, until now, remained thwarted. The world seems increasingly indifferent to true genius of any kind, let alone Evans’. Endlessly distracted by the trivial, we allow the classical tools of grammar, logic and rhetoric to lie unregarded in the shed of consciousness, rusting to a picturesque hue that would actually look really great on Instagram. But which filter? Hmmm… Super-sharp wit TIME OUT £19 (£18) £16

Rich Hall’s Hoedown Fri 9 Nov | 8pm

G

Rich Hall’s critically acclaimed new show begins its second leg of touring. There has never been a better time to be an American comedian in the UK. Hall’s precision dismantling of the tenuous relationship between two countries is as freewheeling and deadly accurate as ever. The Hoedown begins as a withering dissection of Trump’s America, but ends up being a celebration of Americana. There’s stand-up, improvised ballads, cracking good musicianship, and ultimately a hilarious, foot-stomping, shitkicking good time to be had by all. Even if you don’t own a hoe.

Transitions

An eclectic trio of long-established exhibiting artists, working with textiles and ceramics. Their vitality and passion for their work shines through their energetic and diverse styles. Their work includes both decorative and functional pieces, inspired by observations of life, sometimes funny and sometimes serious.

For years, Jenny had to paint on the kitchen table, but now has the luxury of a small studio at the bottom of her garden. A self-proclaimed “restless soul”, Jenny uses a wide range of materials, oils, watercolours, acrylic, pastels, etching and often all of these together! She finds inspiration in many places, but especially St Ives where she has spent a great deal of time over the years.

Wednesday Embroidery Workshop

Through My Lens

A small group of experienced embroiderers, originally part of the Tunbridge Wells branch of the Embroiderers Guild. The group meets regularly to stitch and exchange ideas and information. Their work covers all forms of embroidery, including both hand and machine stitch and mixed media and they have exhibited at Art Club in the Pantiles and at Chequermead in East Grinstead among others.

Dorothy Clarke is a photographer based in Sevenoaks. Through varied work, Clarke hopes that the exhibition brings to you a sense of the wonderful and interesting places she has seen through her travels. Her photographs are just a few of the things that inspire her in life.
