More houses for Haysden as Local Plan goes public again By Andy Tong andy@timesoftonbridge.co.uk A SECOND large planning application has been submitted to build more than 100 new houses on Green Belt land near Haysden Country Park. The news comes as Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council’s draft Local Plan was put forward for a second public consultation – running until December 23. After they conducted their examination the Government’s Inspectors called on the council to address a number of concerns about Green Belt, infrastructure and sustainability. Developer Gillings wants to build 115 homes on a triangle of fields between Upper and Lower Haysden Lanes. The controversial site, next to one of
the borough’s most cherished conservation areas, was included in the draft Local Plan. It identified the land in south Tonbridge, which was ‘safeguarded’ in the 2007 plan, as suitable for 480 new homes to be built by 2031.

THE town’s three-day Christmas Festival is taking place this weekend with an extra hour of festivities before the climactic firework display begins at the Castle. Running from 6pm on Friday [November 22] through to 8pm on Sunday, the free event will feature a variety of bands and two pantomime troupes. The actors will be walking among the crowds before helping Mayor Jill Anderson turn on the Christmas lights before the fireworks begin at 6.55pm. The festival is organised and sponsored by the town’s Rotary Club for a seventh consecutive year with support from Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council.

The new proposal includes the provision of 46 affordable homes, which is in line with the council’s target of 40 per cent. These will consist of 18 one-bedroom houses, 17 with two bedrooms and 11
The Master of Ceremonies will once again be Dave ‘Mac’ McDonald, local comedian and screenwriter, whose latest drama is being filmed in Birmingham and will appear as a six-part series on British television next year. Mr McDonald said: “It’s been a fabulous year and I have been extremely fortunate to have been invited back to Hollywood [Screen Writers Awards] and Cannes, whilst having a TV drama screenplay bought is a genuine honour.” The festival begins with a funfair in Sovereign Way mid car park on Friday evening and running all through the weekend. The High Street will be closed on Sunday from 10.30am-8.30pm with more than 60 stalls lining the pavements and River Walk, offering Christmas merchandise, jewellery, toys, food, drinks, tombolas and lucky dips. the start of the year, to construct 125 houses on the other side of Lower Haysden Lane. That was also part of the Local Plan, and included the provision of a twoform entry primary school. Further strains on the local community right affect medical services, transport and traffic on the busy Brook Street-Quarry Hill roundabout.
