By Richard Williams and Lottie Bulmer THE property market in Tunbridge Wells and the surrounding areas is ‘one of the hottest on record’ with homes selling within a week or even hours of going on the market. Previously sales might have taken several months.

Research over the past week by the Times shows houses being snapped up, sometimes before they are even advertised, due in part to an influx of buyers from London creating a shortage of family homes.

The clamour for properties in Tunbridge Wells comes after house prices in the Borough have increased by more than 50 per cent over the last decade.

In the last year alone, they have risen on average £32,000 with the average home in the TN1 postcode now costing £535,000, according to online estate agent Zoopla.

Now estate agents have told the Times

how a shortage of family homes is seeing the average family home in Tunbridge Wells selling within a week, with some selling in a matter of days, and even hours.

Deborah Richards who run Maddisons Residential on The Pantiles said the average selling time for a family home in Tunbridge Wells is now seven days.

‘We’ve had properties sell within hours, some before they’re even advertised’ “From the time a house is available to view, we begin fielding offers over the next few days and I’d say from end to end you are looking at a week to make the sale,” she said.

“In some cases, we are selling above the asking price or having to take sealed bids because we get so many offers.”

But people living in the area looking to

upsize now face ‘eyewatering mortgages’ estate agents admit, as demand for living in the area increases.

“I feel very sorry for the youngsters. I regularly see people with a £650,000 mortgage now say they want more space, or somewhere to park their car, but they are going to be looking at a million pounds,” said Deborah Richards, adding much of the demand is being driven by Londoners.

“Typically, Londoners have liked moving to the area around The Pantiles or St John’s but we are seeing more and more look to the villages now that commuting is no longer that important for people,” she said.

“Wadhurst is now very popular, as is Frant, Penshurst and Speldhurst because you get more bang for your buck in those areas, more space and larger gardens.”

His election required the newly elected Mayor to use his casting vote to break the stalemate, but the move now hands minority control of the hung Council to the Conservatives.

The election took place in a new look Town Hall chamber last Wednesday [May 26] at the no overall control Council, where the 24 Conservative and 24 opposition councillors were separated by plexiglass to LEADER adhere to Cllr Tom Covid safety Dawlings regulations.

Cllr Dawlings’ nomination to be the next leader followed the resignation of previous leader Cllr Alan McDermott, who stood down last week following a disastrous local election on May 6 that saw the Conservatives lose overall control of the Council for the first time in more two decades.

All 24 opposition councillors voted against Cllr Dawlings’ Conservative succession as leader, but the vote was carried after new Mayor, Cllr Chris Woodward, used his mayoral privilege of a

casting vote to carry the motion forward.

Chris Woodward himself was only elected as the new Mayor thirty minutes earlier after the previous Mayor, Joy Podbury, used her final casting vote to carry his election through.

The Council’s constitution gives the Mayor, who also acts as Chairman of the Council, the final vote on any tied motion.

MP tells Cummings he was whistleblower who forgot to actually ‘blow the whistle’

TUNBRIDGE WELLS MP Greg Clark led the questions last week when he interviewed former government advisor Dominic Cummings.

The Kent MP, who is chair of the Science and Technology Committee was co-chairing an inquiry with former Health Secretary and chair of the Health and Social Care Committee, Jeremy Hunt.

The cross-party investigation into the UK’s handling of the coronavirus crisis was announced by the two former cabinet members amid worries a government inquiry will take too long for lessons to be learned in time.

Bradley Mackintosh of Southborough-based Flying Fish has seen similar demand which he also says is being driven by a four-fold increase in Londoners buying homes in the town.

He said: “There’s always been an interest from Londoners, but we’ve never seen anything at this level before. It’s about three or four-fold of what we’re used to.

“The other thing is that these buyers have often been renting so they are in a strong position to buy as they don’t have to wait for a house to sell.

It’s a good time to sell.”

Marc Johnson of KMJ Properties, based in Rusthall, said they have seen properties sell even before they have been advertised.

“We have had some properties sell within hours, some before they’re even advertised. Those that sell quickest are the good-sized family homes of three or four bedrooms.”

Louise Norman, Associate Sales and Marketing Director at Dandara South East, added: “Demand for new homes in Tunbridge Wells and the surrounding commuter belt is experiencing an all-time high which is evident at our Knights Wood and 1887 The Pantiles developments where demand has increased significantly in the last few months.”

The same picture is playing out across the area.

Steve Bovis, from Wood and Pilcher, which has offices in both Tunbridge Wells and Crowborough, says it is one of the busiest times he can remember in 40 years in the business.

“It is certainly up there as one of the hottest on record. It has been an incredible 18 months. We are running out of stock. If you have a good property and you put it on the market it will get snapped up.

“Our Crowborough branch has had an exceptional time. The demand has been amazing, whether for people coming out of city looking for a home or people wanting work from home requirements.”

Mr Bovis also doesn’t believe an end to the stamp duty holiday – the discount finally stops this month – will slow the local housing market.

“It is good old supply and demand. If you have to move, for whatever reason, that will happen if there is a stamp duty holiday or not.”

‘The fundamental reason was I was really frightened of acting’ The pair have said the inquiry would aim to produce interim recommendations along the way but would not pre-empt any future official inquiry.

During the seven hours of questioning last Wednesday [May 26], Dominic Cummings, who resigned from his position as chief aide to PM Boris Johnson in November, criticised the government’s handling of the pandemic, saying that ‘tens of thousands of people died who didn’t need to die’.

He added that current Health Secretary Matt Hancock ‘should have been fired for at least 15 to 20 things’, and that ministers, officials and advisers ‘like me’

were ‘sorry’ for falling ‘disastrously short of the standards that the public has a right to expect’.

Having heard Mr Cummings’ evidence, which has since been dismissed by Downing Street as bearing no ‘relation to reality’, Greg Clark said to the former Tory spin doctor: “What you have described is that you were a whistleblower, in effect, but you forgot to blow the whistle.”

Mr Cummings, who made headlines during the pandemic after taking his family to Durham before taking a trip to Barnard Castle despite having tested positive for Covid-19, responded by saying ‘whistleblower’ was not the ‘right word’ but it was ‘true I hit the panic button and said we have to ditch the official plan’.

“The fundamental reason was I was really frightened of acting,” he said, adding that if he hit the panic button and got it wrong ‘I was going to kill hundreds of thousands of people’.

It is not the first time Mr Clark and Mr Cummings have exchanged words.

In September 2019, the PM’s aide told Mr Clark he would be ‘purged’ if he stepped out of line on Brexit.

In a four-letter phone rant, Mr Cummings told the former business secretary: “When are you ******* MPs going to realise we are leaving on October 31? We are going to purge you.”

Greg Clark subsequently lost the Conservative whip over his Remain views on Brexit. It was later restored.

Surge testing begins for renamed variant TESTING for the Indian variant of coronavirus has begun in parts of Kent, although rates of Covid-19 remain low in Tunbridge Wells.

Just eight new cases of the virus were reported in the Borough in the seven days to May 24 leaving Tunbridge Wells with a rate per 100,000 of 6.7 – unchanged from the week before.

Elsewhere there is rising concern over the prevalence of the Indian variant, which is thought to spread more quickly than the Kent variant that was responsible for the surge in cases in the UK over the winter.

Stage is set for major revamp after theatre receives £500,000 windfall

Strains The different strains of variants have now been renamed by the World Health Organisation [WHO], with the Kent variant now becoming Alpha, and the Indian variant, scientifally labelled as B.1.617.2 is now called Delta to remove any stigma.

The newly named Delta strain is said to be responsible for a rise in rates in Canterbury, where 50 new cases were recorded in the seven days to May 24, up from 32 the week earlier.

Surge testing to identify carriers of the new strain has got underway, but Dr Allison Duggal, the interim head of public health at Kent County Council, said while the variant was a ‘concern’ rates of infection were low.

Heatwave forecast TEMPERATURES in Tunbridge Wells are expected to the hit their highest level for the year today.

Monday’s bank holiday was already recorded as the hottest day of the year so far after reaching nearly 25C degrees in parts of the UK, but temperatures are set to exceed that today.

Tunbridge Wells residents can expect highs of 24C degrees, while people in Crowborough are set for 25C degrees.

Elsewhere in the UK the MET office say temperatures could exceed 27C degrees, but the warm spell is likely to be broken by thunderstorms by the end of the week.

Becky Mitchell, a Met Office meteorologist, said: “There’s a chance of some thundery breakdown in the southeast and we could have some quite intense storms there.

“There’s still a lot of uncertainty but with the warm and humid weather we are having we have the key ingredients for thunderstorms.”

Murder inquiry launched POLICE have arrested a 19-year-old man on suspicion of murder after the disappearance a teenager.

Marc Williams, 18 and from Uckfield, East Sussex, was last seen on Sunday morning (May 30) at Chapel Green in Crowborough.

A murder investigation has now been launched as officers believe the teenager ‘may have come to harm’.

Suspicion Detective Chief Inspector of Sussex Police Alasdair Henry said: “Sadly, we are now treating the disappearance of Marc Williams as a criminal investigation and a suspect has been arrested on suspicion of his murder.

“Finding Marc remains our priority and we continue to appeal to the public with any information to please come forward and report it to us.

“Our thoughts are with Marc’s family at this incredibly difficult time and they are being supported by trained officers.”

TRINITY THEATRE

TRINITY Theatre in Church Road has secured a National Lottery grant that has given it the green light for a £1.5million major redevelopment.

The charity run arts venue, based in the former Decimus Burton church in the town centre, has secured funding of £506,700 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund [NLHF].

Reality The money comes in addition to a £300,000 grant by Tunbridge Wells Borough Council as well as a previous £26,200 NLHF grant, both awarded to the Theatre in 2019.

The new £500,000 grant secures the venues £1.5million improvement plan designed to enable key repairs, heritage conservation and to upgrade the building’s facilities.

As part of the redevelopment, the clock tower is to be converted into an ‘engaging heritage space’, including a reworking of four floors and a 360-degree viewing platform at the top.

Stuart McLeod, Director London & South at The National Lottery Heritage Fund, said: “We are thrilled to support Trinity Theatre, a beloved community institution in Tunbridge Wells and a vibrant arts venue, in fulfilling its ambitions to

create a clocktower space, improve heritage engagement by a wider group of people, as well as expand activity plans and income generation resources.”

Trinity says the proposed changes to the former Victorian church have come following an extensive period of consultation over the last few years, gaining over 2,500 responses.

“This project has been three years in the planning, and we’re delighted that, thanks to a development grant from The National Heritage Lottery Fund, it’s a big step further to becoming a reality,” said Alison Kemp, Trinity Theatre Grants Manager.

She added: “Trinity is very much a community

venue and we’re really looking forward to sharing our plans with local people.”

Following planning permission approval, Trinity obtained listed building consent for the development project in May 2020, and appointed architects Kaner Olette of Tunbridge Wells to oversee the revamp.

Architect, Michael Kaner said: “We are looking forward to the challenge of successfully integrating the new access and interpretation interventions into the Grade 2 listed structure to provide a memorable new heritage-based experience for Kent.”

A tender process for contractors to build the clocktower space will occur later this summer.

However, the theatre says they have had to put fundraising for the project ‘on hold’ until after the current pandemic.

During its closure, Trinity was awarded more than £350,000 from the Government’s Cultural Recovery Fund to help it replace lost income.

Alex Green, Chief Executive Officer at Trinity Theatre, said: “Following a year challenging year for us all, I’m really excited that this long-term plan to invest in our home and expand what we offer visitors and the local community, is now moving forwards into its final stages.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing the project’s end result.”

TV star returns to the BBC but misses charity special TV HOST Nick Knowles will return to DIY SOS despite breaching BBC rules on appearing in advertisements.

The Tunbridge Wells star’s position at the broadcaster was under threat after he appeared in a Shreddies TV advert, but the star has now come to an agreement with BBC bosses.

He will resume filming in the coming months and be back on screens in 2022, although he will have to miss a Children In Need charity special of DIY SOS later this year because the campaign for Shreddies will still be running.

Drink driver high on cannabis jailed for killing married couple

Town centre van fire and collision A VAN accidentally caught alight just as an air ambulance had to be called following two separate incidents in Tunbridge Wells town centre at the weekend.

On Saturday May 29, a crash involving a van and a motorcycle on Church Road saw police, the ambulance service and Kent Fire and Rescue attend at around 12.25pm.

The motorcyclist, whose injuries are said not to be life threatening, was airlifted to hospital.

A Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “Two fire engines attended and crews used hydraulic equipment and tools to stabilise the van and release one casualty, who was passed into the care of the air ambulance.”

At a similar time, smoke could be seen across Tunbridge Wells town centre as fire crews attended a van fire in Grosvenor Road near to St John’s Road just before 1pm.

A fire service spokesman added: “Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called to reports of a van alight in Tunbridge Wells.

“Two fire engines attended, and crews wore breathing apparatus while using hose reel jets to extinguish the flames.

“One person sustained slight burns to their hands. The cause is believed to be accidental.”

By Richard Williams AN UNINSURED driver from Tunbridge Wells who had consumed whisky and cannabis before causing a car crash that killed a married couple in their 80s has been jailed for more than five years.

Kristiyan Trendafilov, who only held a provisional licence, had been driving a Toyota Avensis taken from a relative without permission, during the evening of October 7, 2018.

Shortly before 11.15pm, he lost control of the car on the A228 at Colts Hill while attempting to negotiate a bend and drove directly into the path of a Fiat 500.

The two occupants, Shirley and Alan Reygate, had been returning to their Sussex home from a night out with family when their car was struck by the Toyota.

The impact of the head-on collision forced the Fiat into a roadside hedgerow while Trendafilov’s car span into a ditch before catching fire.

The 83-year-old Mrs Reygate who had been a front seat passenger in the Fiat suffered serious injuries and died several days later in hospital.

Her 82-year-old husband spent a number of months in hospital but never recovered from his injuries and died in January 2019.

Kent Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit found that earlier in the day 29-year-old Trendafilov had attended a barbeque, where he had consumed alcohol and drugs.

Blood tests later indicated a significant amount

of alcohol in his system and tests also revealed levels of cannabis in his blood, which were over the legal limit.

Trendafilov appeared at Maidstone Crown Court and initially denied two counts of causing death by dangerous driving before later admitting the charges.

In sentencing Trendafilov to five years and two months’ in jail last week, Judge Julian Smith said: “These cases are always deeply distressing and profoundly sad.

“The loss caused is catastrophic and the impact of those who have lost loved ones cannot be reflected in any punishment.

“This sentence can never compensate for nor reflect the loss and, quite frankly, nothing could.”

Outside court, PC Lee Berridge who led the investigation against Trendafilov said the ‘irresponsible and reckless’ had led to ‘devastating consequences’.

“His actions have not only ended the lives of two people but have caused profound suffering and distress to their families.

“Drivers who drink alcohol or take drugs before getting behind the wheel are not only risking their own life, but the lives of their passengers as well as other innocent motorists or pedestrians.”

Hermes in 2018, say they expect shopping centre rents to fall even further, raising speculation that the landlord could be ready to dispose of its less profitable retail assets.

The decline in retail value of British Land’s retail centres, which also includes Meadowhall in Sheffield, has been blamed on the pandemic that forced many of its tenants to close.

‘Once we’ve got stable cash flows, we can make a decision on the outlook’ Rent collection from offices, which make up the bulk of the company’s assets, was at 99 per cent in 2020, say the landlord, but it only collected 71 per cent of the £305million it was owed by retail tenants for the same period.

Some of the £88million shortfall is expected to be recovered, but at least £30million has been written off after tenants such as Arcadia, which owned Topshop in RVP, collapsed.

As a result, British Land’s underlying profit fell 34 per cent year on year to £201million.

By Robert Forrester THE owner of Royal Victoria Place [RVP] in Tunbridge Wells has said more than a third of the value of its shopping centres have been wiped out by the pandemic.

The future of the town’s flagship shopping centre has been cast into doubt after owners

British Land admitted last week that more than £1billion has been wiped off its portfolio in the past year, with a lack of rents from its shopping centres to blame.

The commercial landlord warned last year that the pandemic had wiped off around a billion off the value of its retail arm, but figures released last Wednesday [May 26] show that its shopping

centres, such as RVP, lost 36 per cent of their value.

The combined worth of the FTSE 100 company’s property holdings fell by more than 10 per cent to £9.1billion over the 12 months to the end of March, its figures show.

British Land, which bought RVP in Tunbridge Wells for £96million from previous owners

The news caused shares in British Land to fall 1.7 per cent in late-morning trading last week.

The commercial landlord has said it will now narrow its focus and invest in urban logistics and out of town retail parks — two sectors which have benefited from the boom in ecommerce during the pandemic – but it raises speculation the company could offload its least profitable assets, such as its shopping centres.

Simon Carter, British Land’s chief executive warned that shopping centre rents are expected to fall another 10-15 per cent from today’s levels but said the company has made no firm decisions on its assets yet.

He said: “We’ll roll our sleeves up and do some heavy asset management. Once we’ve got stable cash flows, we can make a decision on the outlook.”

Council leader reaches out to the opposition after being ‘rebuffed’

By Richard Williams THE new leader of Tunbridge Wells Borough Council [TWBC] has asked opposition leaders to work with him at the hung authority after they had ‘rebuffed’ his approaches for co-operation.

Cllr Tom Dawlings was voted in as leader on Wednesday [May 26] at the first Full Council meeting held at the Town Hall since the pandemic began.

He replaced fellow Conservative Cllr Alan McDermott who resigned from the position following a local election result earlier this month, when TWBC fell to no overall control after being Tory held for more than 20 years.

The Town Hall has 24 Conservative and 24 opposition councillors. Despite having minority control, the new leader will need to either rely on the Mayor’s casting vote to approve any new policies or get opposition support.

In his first statement as Leader, Cllr Dawlings reached out to opposition councillors who he said had ‘rebuffed’ his approaches to co-operate on the deadlocked Council.

He said: “Last week I approached each Leader of the Opposition Groups. I suggested that even without a hung Council, my aim would be to have good relations with opposition groups mainly because we would be in full agreement on most of the services the Council provides.

“But in the balanced state the Council is now in working more closely together is all the more important.

Delay “Sadly my approach to sort out some matters in advance of the Full Council meeting on May 26 were rebuffed.”

Labour, Lib Dems, the Alliance, and the only independent councillor Rodney Atkins have all ruled out ‘propping up’ the Conservatives in the hung Council.

However, Cllr Dawlings went on to list some of the issues facing the Borough over the next 12 months, including a possible delay to the £19million Amelia Scott project – the town’s

new museum cultural and hub – as well as alluding to resident dissatisfaction with waste management provider Urbaser.

He said: “We have major matters to address – the Local Plan; the Climate Emergency and our net zero target for carbon emissions by 2030; our property assets and completion of the Amelia Scott. The Boundary Commission is about to start an investigation to balance up the wards sizes across the Borough which inevitably will lead to many changes.

“Some of the services provided by Tom our major contractors are presently Dawlings less than satisfactory.

“The pandemic has seriously impacted on the Council’s income so there are some major financial decisions to take to balance our revenue budget and replenish reserves. Despite the initial rebuff, I hope the Opposition Group Leaders will now be prepared to discuss establishing good working relationship because that is what our residents and businesses both need and deserve.”

WHAT THE OPPOSITION SAY The Times has contacted opposition group leaders for comment on whether they would now work with the Conservatives: CLLR HUGO POUND, LABOUR ‘The Conservatives have ignored the election results and gone for a power grab.

“All of the senior positions are still held by Conservatives and shamefully 25 of the 26 senior positions are held by men – setting back women’s emancipation in the borough by decades,” he said.

He added: “Labour Councillors have always said that they will contribute to the development of a vision and plan to get the borough out of and beyond the pandemic.

“At the same time, we will

continue to provide the constructive opposition expected by our voters to a Council leadership determined to follow the same path that has led us into the ruinous position we are now in.”

Despite losing their majority in this year’s local elections, the Conservatives retained control of Tunbridge Wells Borough Council thanks to the vote of an unelected ex-councillor!

deadlocked council.

“Regrettably, the new administration has not started with a conciliatory or collaborative approach. We hope there will be a change of tone in the weeks ahead.”

From Bank of England to the council hot seat Tom Dawlings has been a councillor at Tunbridge Wells Borough Council since 2014.

The representative for Benenden & Cranbrook has been the cabinet’s head of Finance and Governance since 2019.

The 65-year-old spent his career with the Bank of England where he was involved with the sterling money markets, special banking operations, financial sanctions and anti-money laundering (AML) and counter financing of terrorism (CFT).

Plan In 2007, Cllr Dawlings and his wife, Martine, bought a smallholding in Benenden where they now look after a large array of animals.

His involvement with trying to get a new Primary School in Benenden led to him becoming involved with drawing up a Parish Plan for Benenden. He was also one of the founding trustees setting up the Benenden Village Trust which oversees the recreation grounds in Benenden and Iden Green, the Village Hall and some other properties.

This all led to him being encouraged to stand for election to Tunbridge Wells Borough Council winning a seat in the Benenden & Cranbrook ward in 2014.

At the Council he has served on the Planning, Licencing, Audit & Governance and Overview & Scrutiny Committees and the Finance & Governance Cabinet Advisory Board.

Leader selects cabinet CLLR Tom Dawlings’ election as Leader is for a four-year term and in his first job in his new role was to select his cabinet.

The Cllr has retained his finance and governance portfolio and his predecessor, Cllr Alan McDermott, remains on the cabinet as head of planning and transportation.

Former cabinet member David Scott [Culverden] has returned to his former file as head of economic development.

Cllr Scott had resigned from the cabinet last year after a failed attempt to oust Cllr McDermott.

Cllr Andy Fairwhether [Frittenden & Sissinghurst] has replaced Carol Mackonochie as head of Communities after she lost her seat in Capel on May 6.

Former mayor says role will ‘never be the same again’ A FORMER Tunbridge Wells Mayor has said power in the Town Hall now effectively lies with the mayoralty due to the current stalemate in the chamber.

Last week Conservative Broadwater councillor, Chris Woodward was elected Mayor of the Borough after the previous Mayor used her casting vote to break a tied vote on his election.

Cllr Woodward then used the same voting privilege to secure Conservative Cllr Tom Dawlings election as Council leader.

Council records show that a mayoral casting vote had not been used in the Town Hall in at least the last decade until last week.

Opposition councillors had argued the Mayor being a Conservative ‘did not represent the balance of the Council’ and the casting vote removed the mayor’s impartiality.

Talks had been underway between group leaders of the various parties and the Chief Executive of the Council to see if there was a way of separating the civic role of Mayor and more political role of chairman of the Council, but no deal was struck.

The only independent councillor at the Town Hall, Rodney Atkins, had put himself forward to be the next Mayor arguing he

would be more impartial, but his nomination was not accepted.

Now a former Mayor of Tunbridge Wells has criticised the current situation, which he says has turned the mayoralty from a purely civic function into a political one.

David Neve, who was a Lib Dem during his time as Mayor in 2016, before later becoming an independent on the Council, said he never once voted during his time in the role.

Decisions “I never used my vote let alone a casting vote in my time as the Mayor because I believed it was important for a mayor to remain an impartial figurehead,” he said.

“Now we have a situation like in France or London where the mayor has actual power and can make decisions. In effect, we have a municipal mayor, and that is not right on the people. That’s not what they voted for.”

He said that the casting vote now gave the mayor ‘real power’.

“While on paper the mayor does not have any power, in actual fact this mayor can now make all the decisions so he might as well just run the show himself.

“It is political games and I think MAYOR PAST the mayorship will never be the David Neve same again.”

MENTAL HEALTH CHARITY TOP THE Mayor Cllr Chris Woodward has named Tunbridge Wells Mental Health Resource as his chosen charity.

The charity will work in conjunction with the Mayoral office to raise awareness and organize fundraising events with the proceeds going towards their work in the community.

Last year the charity helped nearly 15000 people across five projects including advocacy support for people detained under the mental health act, a wellbeing centre dubbed ‘The Hub’, an out of hours telephone crisis service, and outreach projects.

Speaking at the start of his year as Mayor, Cllr Woodward explained he was keen to support Mental Health Resource because, ‘mental health became a greater concern during Covid lockdowns, especially among young people’.

He added: “Mental Health Resource was quick to adapt and did its very best to use distancedbased delivery to support its clients. Their contributions to helping and steering those with such needs are crucial and much appreciated.”

The new mayor has been a member of the council since 2006.

He was born in Uxbridge in 1945 but spent his school years in Nigeria and Southern Rhodesia

(now Zimbabwe) and describes himself as being a ‘white African’.

He attended university at Imperial College, London studying electrical engineering and went onto have a career in IT. Chris and wife Jenny have six children and are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The new mayor has nominated Cllr Godfrey Bland [Conservative] as Deputy Mayor, and a unanimous vote of 44 councillors for the motion, two against, and two abstentions, backed his election.

Crowborough brewery shows a lot of bottle over battle to sell its beer

By Richard Williams A BREWERY has renewed attempts to get a licence to sell alcohol from its premises arguing the pandemic has had a ‘catastrophic effect’ on its business.

The Good Things Brewing Company had attempted to secure a licence to sell alcohol from its Rendlye Farm base, which is near Eridge.

Its original application was rejected by Wealden District Council [WDO] due to concerns around its impact on neighbours.

The brewery has since raised an online petition that has garnered more than 1,300 signatures

Uncertain future as M&S announce store closures THE Tunbridge Wells’ Marks & Spencer stores have an uncertain future following the latest closures announced by the retailer last week.

M&S said it is going to shut 30 stores in the ‘next phase’ of its long-term transformation plan, after posting a £201.2million pre-tax loss for the year to March 27 after its clothing and home business was particularly hammered by pandemic restrictions.

The planned closures will be part of a shake-up of around 110 stores, with the majority of these sites set for relocation.

It has already closed or relocated 59 stores but said it is accelerating changes to its portfolio of shops following the impact of the pandemic.

“With the closure of pubs for such a long period of time, Chris’s wholesale business was decimated” and has now renewed its application for a licence with WDO. Felicity Tulloch, a solicitor acting on behalf of brewery owner, Chris Drummond, told the authority’s licensing panel: “We make no bones about it; the impact of Covid on the business has been catastrophic.

“It has been the case across all of the hospitality industry as one of the first sectors to be affected when the pandemic began and one of the last to recover as things begin to ease now.

“With the closure of pubs for such a long period of time, Chris’s wholesale business was decimated. That’s why, notwithstanding the refusal of the licence application he made last autumn, we are back before you, because Chris has no alternative but to try and seek a licence again.”

The licence would allow the business to sell alcohol on and off site, seven days a week.

However, under its terms the site would only be accessible to the public four days a week, Thursdays to Sundays.

Regulated Ms Tulloch said: “The refusal of the application last year has diminished the business that Chris is trying to create and he would like the opportunity to try and develop it, albeit in a very regulated and modest way.

“There is a huge amount of local support as I have said and very much two sides to this story.

A great many people want to see this business thrive. This isn’t just about balancing business interests against local residents, but also all

those added into the equation in support.

“The premises isn’t meant to be scary. It is supposed to be something nice, exciting for the community and something we would hope Wealden would welcome within its boundaries.”

Neighbours have argued the consumption of alcohol on the site would create disturbance, anti-social behaviour and public nuisance in a rural area.

Particular concern was raised by the Bowles Rocks Trust, a registered charity which operates a children’s outdoor activity centre immediately neighbouring the brewery site.

The charity argued any such facility in that location would raise safety concerns for its children and jeopardise its work.

The council is expected to publish the panel’s decision this week.

The group currently has 254 full-line stores, which sell food and clothing, but it plans to reduce this to around 180 over the next 10 years, with some of these being replaced by food-only or purely clothing and home sites.

Tunbridge Wells has both a food and homes outlet in the North Farm area of the town, as well as clothing site in Royal Victoria Place in the town centre.

M&S said the impact of the pandemic has provided it with a strong opportunity to purchase new locations, with the group currently targeting six new stores in former Debenhams units.

The group told shareholders that total revenues dropped after this slump offset an improvement in its food operations.

It reported that food like-for-like revenues increased by 1.3% over the past year but the company saw its clothing and home business report a 31.5% slump despite 53.9% online growth.

Clothing and home operations saw a £129.4 million operating loss, although an M&S spokesperson said the performance improved in the second half of the year.

Q: Do I need my ex-partner’s permission to take our children on holiday?

A: If your ex-partner has parental responsibility for the children (and there is no court order in place that allows you to take them out of the jurisdiction) you must either obtain his/her permission to take the children out of England and Wales or obtain permission (an order) from the court allowing you to do so. Some airlines require a letter of consent from the absent parent if one parent is travelling abroad with the children. If however you have an order from the Court confirming that the children live with you then you can take the children out of the country for up to four weeks without needing the other parent’s permission and some orders include general permission e.g. for an annual two week holiday. If your ex-partner does not consent to you taking the children out of the country, you can make an application to the Court for permission. It is important to ask your ex-partner for their consent as early as possible, so that you have enough time to make an application to the Court for permission if this is necessary. You should also consider the practicalities e.g. offering to pay for an extra test to reduce the isolation period might be appreciated and encourage consent.

Q: My ex-partner wants to take our children to an ‘amber list’ country but I don’t agree, what can I do?

A: If your ex-partner does not already have an order allowing him/her to take the children abroad then the onus is on him/ her to apply for permission. You should make sure you have formally notified him/her that you do not consent. It is an offence under the Child Abduction Act to remove children from the jurisdiction of England and Wales without either the consent of everyone with parental responsibility or permission from the court. If your ex-partner already has permission then the onus is on you to apply for a prohibited steps order preventing the holiday this year. Ultimately as with all Children Act applications the court has to decide what is in the best interests of the children. This will vary from case to case.

Children are likely to find periods of isolation frustrating and it may seem unfair for the parent who has not had the benefit of the trip to potentially have restrictions placed on them when the children return. The reason for the trip will be taken into account as well. Is it just a holiday for pleasure or will the children be seeing extended family that they have not seen for over a year and would benefit from spending time with?

Depending on the children’s ages their wishes and feelings may be taken into account. Again if required the application should be issued early and the practicalities properly thought through.

Tigers’ roaring success earns them a chance for international recognition

By Lottie Bulmer A Tunbridge Wells’ gymnastic team located on Chapman Way, is set to represent the country on the world stage.

From June 23 to June 29, the Tiger’s Gymnastic Club will be competing at The Acrobatic Gymnastics Age Group World Championships in Geneva, Switzerland.

The club’s gymnasts include William Clark and Harley Curtis - Lawrence who will be competing in the men’s pair event and Hector Kinghorn and Bea Henderson in the mixed pair’s event.

Harley said: “It felt really good to be selected for the World Championships, I am very excited and can’t wait!

“We have had a long journey to get to this stage; we missed out at trials due to illness, then I had an injury.

“We were then selected, only for it to be delayed due to Covid.

“My club has been really important because without it I wouldn’t be anywhere. It has brought me a long way in gymnastics and given me so many opportunities. Tigers has made me the gymnast I am today.”

He added: “I love competing the most, because I like being nervous and the adrenaline of knowing you want to do your best on the floor.

“It is amazing to be able to show what you can do to other people and see how they enjoy it.

Compete “Through competing, I have made many new friends and have been lucky enough to visit many different countries to compete.”

The Tiger’s coach, Chris Rogers told of his excitement at his team to be back doing what they do best: “I was delighted that our partnerships were

selected given their hard work and effort.

“Like so many others, I am looking forward to returning to a sense of normality, and of course with it being the World Championships, I am most looking forward to the high profile competition stake that a World Championships brings” James Thomas, British Gymnastics Performance Director, added: “This is another fantastic event to look forward to in the gymnastics calendar. It’s an exciting British team and one that will no doubt be glad to get back to competition.

“Having the opportunity to test themselves against the very best acrobatic gymnasts in the world is a great challenge. Congratulations to all of the gymnasts and coaches on their selection.”

Strictly star calls for ‘local heroes’ to be put forward THE people of Tunbridge Wells are being encouraged to vote for deserving projects to waltz off with funding from a National Lottery Award.

The campaign is being spearheaded by Strictly Come Dancing’s head judge, Shirley Ballas and the winners of the awards will receive a prize of £3,000 for their organisation and a trophy.

The National Lottery looks to recognise individuals from sectors including culture, arts and film, heritage, sport, community and charity.

In 2018, following her own cancer scare, Shirley presented the health sector’s award to a group of women in Glasgow who were using the Breast Cancer Care’s support app

BECCA and saw first-hand how important the fund is to those who receive it.

She said: “In 2018 I was fortunate enough to visit a National Lottery funded project and see firsthand where funding goes and how valuable it is to those in the community.

Astounded “It’s thanks to National Lottery players that £30 million is raised for good causes every week.

“The last 14 months have been extremely tough on us all. But as we hope for better days ahead, we are constantly astounded by the way people and projects responded to adversity with heroic yet simple acts of love, kindness and

selflessness that will be long remembered.

“I have been fortunate to witness how hard these local heroes work and how deserving they are of these awards and accolades. They should be celebrated and will only be celebrated if you put them forward – so please get nominating!”

Say Hi to Hawkhurst this weekend!

SMUGGLERS’ haven Hawkhurst is opening itself up to modern day treasure hunters this weekend.

As part of Tunbridge Wells Borough Council’s ‘Say Hi to your High Street’ campaign, the trail has moved to the Wealden village for the second of four local treasure hunts.

The village has pirating history and was home to the ‘Hawkhurst Gang’ who were a group of smugglers who operated across the South East of England from 1735 to 1749 bringing tea and other contraband into the country.

Local traders are welcoming hunters to find a total of nine hidden clues in order to be in with the chance of winning a selection of prizes including vouchers for gifts and products chosen by the shop owners.

Product prizes include a selection of handmade cushions from Ooh How Lovely, a core range of cooking pots and pans from IN Design Kitchens, a voucher for Lindsay Barrow Designer Florist and even a joint annual membership to Hawkhurst’s independent cinema, Kino.

Hawkhurst traders taking part in the campaign include Two Chicks gift shop, The Royal Oak pub and Martins, the kitchen appliance shop.

Pete Gibson and Nicki Crowhurst of The Royal Oak pub shared how they came to own a little piece of Hawkhurst Pete said: “We have been in hospitality our whole professional careers; I have been a chef since I was 21 and my partner Nicki has been in the hotel industry her whole life.

Bill if passed would increase the maximum sentence for the death offence from 14 years to life and for the serious injury offence from 10 years to 14 years.

Dubbed ‘Tony’s Law’, the clause is named after six-year-old Tony Hudgell from West Malling, who had to have both of his legs amputated in 2017 as a result of abuse he suffered from his birth parents.

He was then adopted by Paula and Mark Hudgell as a baby.

He now has raised over £1 million for charities including Evelina London Children’s hospital, which

treated him for his injuries.

The MP addressed Mr Johnson at Prime Minister’s Questions and asked: “Will he join Tony and Tony’s parents, Paula and Mark, and me, and many others around the country, in campaigning for Tony’s Law – new clause 56 to the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill?

“This is a very minor change to a very important Bill that would bring child abuse sentencing in line with that of adult abuse.”

New clause 56 proposes increasing the maximum sentence for the death offence from 14 years to life and for the serious injury offence from 10 years to 14 years.

Mr Johnson replied: “Of course I remember Tony very well, I remember his incredible campaign and the amount of money he raised and I thank him for it.

“It is very, very important that cases like that, injustices such as that suffered by Tony do receive the full force of the law.

“People who commit serious offences against children can see exactly the same penalties as those who commit serious offences against adults.

“But we will keep this under review and if there is a gap in the law – and I will study his amendment very closely – we will make sure we remedy it.”

COVID-19 restrictions will be eased in parts of Scotland on Saturday, but much of the country will retain tougher measures due to spikes in cases of the virus, Nicola Sturgeon has said.

She said parts of Scotland could move from Level 2 to Level 1 of the five tiers of restrictions, which run from 0-4.

But Edinburgh and Midlothian, Dundee, East Dunbartonshire, Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire, the three Ayrshire areas, North and South Lanarkshire and Clackmannanshire and Stirling will remain in Level 2.

Stable Glasgow, which was kept in Level 3 when measures eased in the rest of the country on May 17, will move to Level 2 on Saturday, with Ms Sturgeon saying the outbreak there had stabilised with case numbers falling slightly.

Glaswegians will be able to drink alcohol indoors, meet in private residences, and hug loved ones from the weekend.

Those in Level 1 areas can meet outside and indoors in public places in larger groups.

Numbers at events, weddings and funerals can also increase, and pubs can open slightly later indoors.

Scotland currently has the highest rate of new cases of Covid-19 of the four nations of the UK. But Ms Sturgeon said there are ‘many parts of mainland Scotland where cases are at very low levels and broadly stable or where case numbers might appear to be rising, but we are assured that they relate to clusters that are being managed’.

Meanwhile, Downing Street has indicated that Boris Johnson still sees nothing in the data to suggest the plan to end all legal lockdown restrictions on June 21 will need to be delayed.

Asked about the Prime Minister’s plans amid warnings over the spread of the Indian variant, a No 10 spokesman said: “The Prime Minister has said on a number of occasions that we haven’t seen anything in the data but we will continue to look at the data, we will continue to look at the latest scientific evidence as we move through June towards June 21.”

The response came as no deaths of Covid-19 were recorded on Tuesday, the first time zero deaths have been reported since july 2020.

Earlier Prof Finn, from the University of Bristol, told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “There’s vulnerability across the country. The idea that somehow the job is done is wrong.

“We’ve still got a lot of people out there who’ve neither had this virus … nor yet been immunised, and that’s why we’re in a vulnerable position right now.”

Professor Ravi Gupta, a member of the New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats Advisory Group (Nervtag), said a delay of a few weeks could have a significant impact on Britain’s battle against the pandemic.

He recommended it should be made clear to the public that it would be a temporary measure based on the surge in cases of the new variant and restrictions may have to be reintroduced.

“Even a month delay could have a big impact on the eventual outcome of this,” Prof Gupta told ITV’s Good Morning Britain.

Sarah Everard died from compression of the neck A POST_MORTEM has found Sarah Everard died from compression of the neck, police have said.

Marketing executive Ms Everard, 33, went missing as she walked home from a friend’s house in Clapham, south London, on March 3.

A major police investigation was launched and her body was found a week later in woodland in Kent.

The Metropolitan Police said on Tuesday: “A post-mortem examination into the death of Sarah Everard held at the William Harvey Hospital in

Ms Everard’s death sparked protests and a vigil in March, which was attended by the Duchess of Cambridge.

Man arrested after mother and son are found dead POLICE have arrested a 29-year-old man on suspicion of murdering a woman and child and injuring a police officer.

Daniel Boulton was detained by Lincolnshire Police at around midday on Tuesday after a 26-year-old woman and her nine-year-old son were stabbed to death in High Holme Road, Louth, at around 8.29pm on Monday.

The force said both victims had suffered multiple stab wounds, and a knife believed to have been used to inflict the injuries was recovered.

Another child was found unharmed at the property and is being looked after, police said.

An off-duty Lincolnshire Police officer was also injured in the Hubbard’s Hill area of Louth on Tuesday morning amid a manhunt for Boulton.

Screaming A neighbour near the scene of where a man was apprehended by police in Louth said the person detained had attempted to get into another neighbour’s car.

The witness, who asked not to be named, said: “He was hammering on the window of the car saying ‘let me in, let me in’. “(The other neighbour) is so shook up, she fortunately had the central locking on and managed to drive off before calling police.

“Police found him in one of the farm buildings but they are still looking for something.”

Armed officers and several police vehicles were involved in the arrest at a farm in Hallington,

near Louth, and two officers in high-vis jackets escorted a man into a police van around the back of a farm building.

He was wearing no shoes or socks, ripped tracksuit bottoms, an Adidas T-shirt and a Nike jacket.

Forensic officers could also be seen entering the property in High Holme Road on Tuesday, where floral tributes were left outside.

Shane Marshall, 18, and his partner Niamh Ismay, 17, who live two doors down from where the double stabbing happened, told reporters they heard a baby screaming at around 8pm on Monday.

Mr Marshall said: “We saw armed police and canine units arrive. We didn’t see any action, we just heard a baby screaming.

“Police said they couldn’t tell us much but they said ‘as you can see, it’s very, very serious’.”

An air ambulance and a number of police vehicles could be seen in the Hubbard’s Hill area where a police officer was injured.

Lincolnshire Police’s head of crime, Detective Chief Superintendent Andy Cox, said: “A woman and child have lost their lives in the most devastating way and I know that their loved ones will be feeling the magnitude of that today and our thoughts go out to them.

“We have also seen communities in Louth, and indeed further afield, who will undoubtedly have been anxious about the possible danger in the town since last night. To all of you I want to say thank you.”

No charges yet for Birmingham air zone DRIVERS will not be charged for entering Birmingham’s Clean Air Zone (CAZ) for the first two weeks, the city council has announced.

Enforcement of the scheme was due to begin on Tuesday but has been delayed until June 14.

Non-compliant cars, taxis and vans will have to pay an £8 daily charge – with enforcement cameras operating around the clock every day of the year.

Coaches, buses and HGVs which do not meet minimum requirements face a £50 charge for entering the zone, which covers all roads within the A4540 Middleway ring road.

Afford The AA said 100,000 vehicle owners will be affected, with the financial burden falling on lower-income and younger drivers.

Similar plans for London and Bristol could hit 600,000 car owners, according to the motoring organisation.

AA president Edmund King said: “Poor air quality is a threat that the majority of drivers agree needs to be addressed and reduced; in due course electric vehicles will largely eradicate those emissions.

“However, the car CAZs in Bristol and Birmingham and the extended Ultra Low Emission Zone in London are very blunt tools that create a tax burden for low-income families and workers.”

He added: “These drivers are least able to afford to replace the vehicles they depend on for work, often night shifts, and sometimes emergencies such as going to hospital or healthcare centres.

“They are also the ones least able to pay the fines.”

The all boys grammar school, which accepts girls in its sixth form, recently

announced it was taking over the second building – which has been empty for over four years - at the Weald of Kent Grammar School satellite site in Sevenoaks. Phase one of the building work is scheduled to finish in September this year.

A TWGSB commented: “Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Boys will provide the same rich educational experience for all our students, whether they are based in Sevenoaks or Tunbridge Wells.

“From September 2021 we will offer 90 Year 7 places (three-form entry) at our new Sevenoaks campus. The first phase will offer provision for a cohort of 90 boys to experience the whole curriculum within one building, over four floors, which will include specialist provision for Art, Science, DT and Music. Our students will also benefit from on-site modern, high-quality sports facilities.”

KICKING OFF The demolition of the old Sixth Form Centre has begun

TUNBRIDGE WELLS GRAMMAR SCHOOL FOR BOYS (TWGSB) is busy building for the future.

Work on its new Sevenoaks site is underway and now its old Sixth Form Centre has been demolished to make way for a state of the art one.

The building was razed to the ground as part of a transformative new school buildings programme. The work began after the school raised over 90% of its fundraising target.

Chair of Governors, Philip Drew, was there to see the old sixth form building come down last week. He said: “We are all overjoyed with the success of the Sixth Form Centre campaign.

The comments in your note appended to Robert Chris’ letter merely serve to highlight that his view of The Times’ uncritical reporting bias in favour of this Conservative Council is correct.

You omitted to mention that the cost of scrapping the Calverley Square theatre complex was less than the projected increase in cost of the project.

Furthermore, the Alliance was only one of the opposition parties who together gained sufficient votes at the last two Borough Councils to deprive the Conservatives of their majority.

The Alliance deserves a seat at the table because it has received a democratic mandate to be there. It is the Tories who need to demonstrate they are a mature party by: n accepting the loss of their majority is because, after 23 years, the public have lost confidence in their ability to run this Council. n showing contrition for doggedly pursuing the Calverley Square project and failing to acknowledge the ever-increasing concerns of the opposition Councillors and the residents. n acknowledging the residents have the right to know the magnitude of the financial deficit. n understanding the importance of working with the other parties to develop consensual policies to stabilise the financial situation and to resolve the challenges faced by the Borough.

Walk for bowel cancer Next month marks Bowel Cancer UK’s Walk Together fundraiser, a five-mile sponsored walk to show support for people undergoing treatment for bowel cancer, to remember loved ones and help stop others dying from the disease.

This year, we’re asking you to walk together on Saturday 12 June in your local area, with your household or in small socially distanced groups.

By walking on this date, we’ll be united as one bowel cancer community, completing our walks on the same day. However, if this date doesn’t work, you can walk any time in June that suits you.

Sean, who sadly lost his mum to bowel cancer when she was just 54, is lucky enough to visit some amazing walking routes as part of his job and has shared some of those ahead of the event.

The reason a Conservative minority Council has now been elected is because the opposition have refused to play ball and have said they would not ‘prop up’ this ailing Conservative administration.

They will, as night follows day, criticise the Tory move as undemocratic, but do they realise what the electorate asked them to do on May 6?

The local elections gave no party a mandate to run the Council alone, not the Conservatives, not an alliance of the opposition parties, and yet despite this, it was disheartening to read how steadfastly the opposition are refusing to work with the Tories in Tunbridge Wells.

You have been asked by the voters in the Borough to collaborate, so refusal is a direct snub to the electorate.

It’s Volunteers’ Week! The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on national healthcare charity, Sue Ryder, has been immense. Not only did it have a financial impact on the charity but it also meant that our incredible volunteers were unable to support us because of the national lockdowns.

We are extremely excited that we have been able to welcome our retail volunteers back since the roadmap allowed non-essential shops to reopen. Sue Ryder has over 5,500 dedicated retail volunteers across the country and since our shops reopened, we are welcoming 125 new volunteers to Sue Ryder every week.

Our volunteers have given over 200,000 hours to us since the reopening of shops in April 2021 and this week, we want to recognise the fantastic contribution they make to Sue Ryder. In fact, our hospices are only part funded by the government, with just 30% of their costs covered on average, so our team of retail volunteers, most of whom work tirelessly in our Sue Ryder shops across the UK, play a critical part in helping the charity raise the rest of the funds needed.

You can see why our volunteers are an invaluable part of the Sue Ryder organisation; they enable us to continue providing the expert and compassionate palliative, neurological and bereavement support that we are so well known for.

Tunbridge Wells Green Party Each week we invite a representative from one of the major political parties to share their views and thoughts. This week, it is the turn of the Green Party of Tunbridge Wells who stood for a record 12 seats at the last Borough election

Environmentalists achieve best election result so far WE here at Tunbridge Wells Greens want to say a huge thank you – thank you to everyone who voted for us, thanks to everyone who came out and leafletted for us, thanks to those who supported us on social media, and a big welcome to our new members who have joined our group during the campaign.

Your support is invaluable and so appreciated.

Greens achieved their best ever result in TW – doubling the number of votes we received across the board in our town.

We attended every husting event, and we stood a record number of candidates in the area.

Greens took seats in the surrounding areas with over 6000 Green votes in Tonbridge and Malling, and our first-ever seat on East Sussex County Council.

These elections were against the backdrop of Covid, which has shown so many of us the importance of our local area and the importance of looking after it.

We have valued being able to take a walk in a local field to allow the mind to escape the horror of the pandemic and get fresh air into the lungs - so many of us now want to protect that.

‘In areas where Greens stood, other parties were forced to look at environmental issues and take stock’ The cleaner air and lower traffic noise. We are no longer prepared to shrug shoulders and say ‘what can you do?’. We now know we can do something if we want to.

People are aware that if we want to leave a better town for the next generation, we have to protect our green spaces and improve our grot spots.

In areas where Greens stood, other parties were forced to look at environmental issues and take stock,

they couldn’t just let it slip quietly under the carpet.

People want to talk about those issues and work towards solutions – and the new council needs to urgently deliver the promised Citizens’ Assembly to give a mandate to their plans.

We have a new council being formed, and TW Greens will be vocal in our support of those who protect the environment and harsh in our criticism of those who would destroy it.

Our last council saw widespread support for the local plan, and we are coming to appreciate the damage those councillors have approved.

Many discovered this during the election campaign because Greens focused on it, a few promised to fight against it - and we will be holding them to that every step of the way.

OLLOWING its reopening, Penshurst Place has revealed an events programme for the coming months that celebrates its remarkable heritage and marks the 500-year anniversary of when King Henry VIII took possession of the famous and much-loved Penshurst estate.

As may well have been the case in Tudor times, the entertainment on offer will include open air theatre shows, falconry displays, archery and axe throwing, and the garden trails - all family friendly.

“It seems only right that we have a calendar of special anniversary activities - many of which King Henry VIII may well have enjoyed himself in these very grounds” After its enforced closure during the coronavirus lockdowns, the impressive 14th Century manor house reopened to the public on Monday May 17. Visitors are once again able to enjoy a visit to the property, following in the footsteps of Henry VIII who used Penshurst Place as a hunting lodge during his time as King of England. It

is widely believed that he also stayed there while secretly courting Anne Boleyn prior to their marriage in 1533.

The stunning formal garden at Penshurst Place, which was laid out in Tudor times,

FAMILY FUN Children can follow different trails around the glorious gardens

Tony Wiseman will be leading a number of free tours around the gardens this Saturday, June 5.

With the scented roses in full bloom and the herbaceous borders bursting with colour, this really is the optimum time of year to visit the glorious Penshurst gardens.

There is currently a special children’s garden trail running until June 6 which follows Tilly the Gardener and her tricky day in the gardens. This will be the first in a series of garden trails organised for children throughout the year.

Celebrate The Penshurst grounds will host two outdoor theatre performances, with The Hound of the Baskervilles opening on July 2, followed by Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night from August 15.

Tickets are now on sale via the Penshurst Place website and are expected to be popular so early booking is advisable.

Its much loved restaurant will be open for

drinks and some delicious food options prior to each performance. Doors open at 5.30pm and each ticket includes exclusive access into the gardens at dusk for a ‘golden hour’ amble before the performance begins at 7pm.

Falconry displays will be hosted by Joe’s Bows in the Penshurst grounds on Saturdays throughout the summer months, featuring falcons, vultures, hawks, eagles and a lovely little owl called Elf. This is a wonderful opportunity to watch and admire these magnificent birds of prey, up close and in their natural habitat.

In addition, Joe’s Bows will be back at Penshurst later in the

year with a series of archery and axe throwing experiences in the woods. More details will be made available on the Penshurst website in due course.

Once a month the Tudor Legacies’ six queens of Henry VIII will be seen wandering around the gardens in period costume, providing an opportunity for visitors to chat to them and ask questions about Tudor times. Upcoming dates for their visits include June 19 and July 11, with further dates listed on the Penshurst Place website.

Ben Thomas, General Manager at Penshurst Place and Gardens, told the Times: “It seems only

right that we mark the 500-year anniversary of when King Henry VIII took ownership of Penshurst Place with a calendar of activities fit for a king – many of which he may well have enjoyed himself in these very grounds.

“From outdoor theatre to archery and strolls around the Tudor gardens, there are plenty of great experiences and family days out here at Penshurst Place, providing a rare opportunity to walk in Henry VIII’s footsteps.”

N

ESTLED on the border of East Sussex and Kent, the Chequers is one of the oldest pubs in the borough of Tunbridge Wells.

The fifteenth century inn situated in the picturesque village of Lamberhurst has just undergone a major refurb after new owner Nick Brookes (pictured) took over the premises last year.

But with various lockdowns and tier restrictions, its grand reopening has been a long-awaited affair, although the pub has been offering takeaways and outdoor dining.

Now that restrictions have eased, pub-goers are finally able to try the delicious array of cask ales and fine food on offer in comfort.

And comfort is certainly the word of the day when it comes to the Chequers.

STARTERS ORDERS The menu is a combination of an array of refined classics along with some daring bites to tempt the more adventurous diner.

The homemade duck scotch egg is certainly proving to be quite the signature dish for this new kitchen team, but its daunting size made it too daunting a meal for a starter for this post lockdown restaurant goer.

being the ‘best burger I’ve ever eaten’ speaks volumes for the quality of the ingredients.

These include 100 per cent beef chuck steak and the not so ‘secret ingredient’ of bone marrow, all topped off with a bacon jam relish and mayo.

Instead, the gin-cured salmon was the perfect light bite to get the tastebuds working again after nearly a year of takeaways and homecooked dinners.

The sweetness of the gin certainly emboldened the delicate nature of the fish and was perfectly balanced by a tangy pickled cucumber relish.

Meanwhile, the Health Bowl, enjoyed by my guest, would have been enough to satisfy a lunchtime hunger, but the fresh and vibrant looking salad was an ideal starter for what was to come.

THE MAIN EVENT ‘Fresh local ingredients’ is a phrase used by many venues, but the Chequers simultaneously manages to celebrate Kentish produce while maintaining a menu with influences from around the world.

From the Cornish crab and blood orange salad to the truffle mac n’ cheese, there is a continental spin on many of the dishes, but all the usual pub favourites are there.

You can choose from burgers and sandwiches to beer battered Kentish haddock, but it is the special boards where you’ll find a real passion for the best food Kent has to offer.

The Huntsman’s Plate and Fisherman’s Plate offered a choice between locally caught bream and slow cooked pig’s cheek, and the pork dish won.

It came with an ample portion of mustard mash and perfectly wilted kale and ‘hearty’ would not do the subtle flavouring of meat and rich gravy justice, but if you are after comfort food, there couldn’t be a better choice.

My guest’s Chequers’s burger may be seen as a lesser adventurous choice, but its verdict of

ROOM FOR DESSERT? Portion size is not something that is scrimped on at the Chequers, but if you do find yourself with a little room, there’s some homely puddings on offer too.

The rhubarb frangipane tartlet was very tempting, especially as it boasts home picked rhubarb, while the cheeseboard could keep you occupied for another hour with its large array of local cheeses.

A shared brownie topped with Taywells honeycomb ice cream was enough for us to round off a perfect meal in some incredible surroundings.

THE VERDICT Not only is it harder to imagine a more amiable setting to enjoy dinner than sat by a crackling fire beneath 500-year-old oak beams, but the food on offer at the Chequers at Lamberhurst is also some of the most beautifully presented comfort food available.

I learned how to make Vietnamese food from scratch at home – and am hooked Sour, spicy, sweet, bitter and salty, Vietnamese food has the power to hit all your taste buds.

Ella Walker finds out how to make it at home

T

HE first pancake is always a dud.

This is true whether it’s an English pancake destined for lemon or sugar, or, as in this case, a turmeric-spiked rice flour and coconut milk crepe, laden with plump prawns and a forest floor’s worth of coriander.

Impaled by rogue bean sprouts and soggy rather than crisp, I have utterly massacred food

I hope she will forgive me.

I order in Vietnamese food every chance I get: fragrant chicken pho (‘fuh’); coarsely shredded papaya salads; pork-prawn wontons with sesame and chilli oil; chargrilled, fish sauce-drenched aubergines… but until now, I’d never attempted to cook it myself.

people make when approaching the cuisine, is “they think it’s more complicated than it is”.

You can’t really blame them (ok, me) when the “flavours feel and taste complex”. However, to hit those key Vietnamese flavours – sweet, sour, salty, umami, hot and bitter – it’s just a matter of combining ingredients, Luu insists.

There’s no need to be intimidated.

I start off slow with the stir-fried greens; a tangle of noodles, shards of pak choi and a sauce from maple syrup, soy sauce and sesame. It took literally 10 minutes to throw together, and the Thai basil I did go out and buy especially, was fully worth the trip.

The ginger chicken I try next proves to be an alchemical triumph of caramelised brown sugar, chicken thighs and a hefty scattering of fresh ginger matchsticks. I grow sceptical when told to add a full teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper to the bubbling pan but am an idiot

to argue. It brings warmth and depth and almost tricks you into forgetting that really, it’s the fish sauce you should be applauding, because that’s the umami holding everything together.

We crunch through spears of asparagus and broccoli on the side, a sign of Luu’s insistence to make

things work for you. She just specifies “greens” – whatever greens you’ve got will do perfectly. Hence why my dodgy first crepe is folded scrappily into shells of iceberg and baby cos lettuce, and although I have a few strands of Thai basil left, and a little coriander and mint, I bump it up with chervil from a pot on the balcony too.

Mastering As a general rule, the dishes we cook at home on autopilot are the ones we grew up eating. Ask chefs, food writers and home cooks, ‘Who taught you to cook?’, and we almost always invoke grandmothers, nonnas, abuelas.

The act of learning something new, grasping unfamiliar methods and skills, or mastering a flavour combination that once seemed daunting, can make your brain turn to the person who taught you the first things, way back in the beginning.

OARSOME Rowing is one of the best cardio exercises

Championed by the likes of Hugh Jackman, Conor McGregor and Gerard Butler, the rowing machine has built the bodies on the big screen and athletes alike. Lottie Bulmer learns about how it can change yours for the better…

IN RECENT years, the rowing machine has had a revival and is tipped as one of the hottest workout trends and it’s not hard to see why.

It is the most effective form of cardio and is a total body workout, using nine muscle groups and 85 per cent of the body’s muscles.

World Rowing Championships triple US silver medallist, Dani Hansen says this is more than double the engagement you get from cycling or running.

She shares how there’s a common misconception that rowing is all about upper body strength, but really, your arms, legs, core and back each play an equally vital role in the rowing stroke.

“It’s also an incredibly efficient exercise, so even if you only have 20 minutes, you’re still getting an amazing workout, which is perfect for people short on time.”

How to help others ease their vaccine nerves to get through to someone, but you will know your partner, friend or family member best. Some people need fears challenged, while others will respond better to a non-aggressive tone; employ the strategy you think will be most effective.

“Before you can start to chat about the issue, you need to understand what it actually is, are they worried about conspiracies – or could they be trypanophobic (scared of needles) or heamophobic (scared of drawing blood)?

“It’s always good to bear in mind that vaccination is a personal choice. However strongly you might feel, everyone has the right to choose what they feel is best for their health.

“That said, it’s important to remind a family member that their decision doesn’t just affect them – if you live together, then it has an impact on the whole family unit and could be the reason for someone getting ill. Rollison added that you should be cautious of sharing facts in the conversation: “If

WITH Covid cases worryingly on the rise again, and the threat of a new strain, it is of the utmost importance that we all play our part in the fight against the virus.

He said: “Don’t jump to conclusions – and certainly don’t jump to judgment. There are many possible reasons for reluctance – from a lack of understanding, to needle phobia, to disturbed thinking through illness.

Gentle “Show a loved one that you are really interested in their position by gentle questioning. Make sure they know you have heard their concerns, before challenging or presenting contrary evidence.”

Harley Street therapist Karl Rollison, who has written a book linked to the topic called ‘The Needle Phobia Handbook’ added his top tips to get through to others: “Vaccinations can be a really sensitive subject, so think about how you’re going to start the conversation.

Notes On Grief by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Available now Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s prose is never not emotive. When she approaches the trauma in her own life, her writing is just as powerful. Notes On Grief is a handful of pages that speak of the loss of her father, James Nwoye Adichie. A famed professor of statistics in Nigeria, he died aged 88 in 2020 – during the pandemic, as a result of kidney disease complications.

What Adichie captures in this

there is the captivating love story of this coming-of-age tale – the friendship between Bess and Eshal, a British Bengali facing her own difficult choices. Some of the other characters and relationships don’t feel quite as well-formed or real, but the book becomes much more gripping as it goes on. It’s ultimately a worthwhile read; a reminder that every young person should be able to have big dreams.

deeply personal, searing collection of short chapters is the confusing, fragmentary nature of grief, and how difficult it is to pin it down with words – let alone accept as fact. She describes the tiny things that break you open, and put you back together; gives a real sense of her family and its many moving parts; and outlines the strange tug-of-war between losing someone and the many practicalities you then have to untangle – all made worse by the injustices and restrictions in place because of Covid. It is a painful read, but reassuring too.

Adichie gives voice to something so many of us aren’t able to articulate. Quite beautiful.

Great Circle is the third book from Maggie Shipstead, the author of Seating Arrangements and Astonish Me. It is an enormous behemoth of a book, but don’t let that put you off persevering beyond the slow start. An epic tale of historical fiction that alternates its focus from trailblazing female pilot Marian Graves, who disappeared in 1950 while attempting to fly around the world, to Hadley Baxter in 2015, an actress about to play Graves in a Hollywood film. Both women had similarly difficult starts to life, losing their parents at a very young age. As the book progresses, Hadley’s research takes her deeper into Marian’s life; from her humble Montana beginnings, to Alaska, and beyond. This novel is ambitious, intricately detailed, rich and considered; definitely one to save for your long summer holiday. (Review by Frances Wright)

Available May 27 In his debut children’s book, England footballer Marcus Rashford uses stories from his own childhood to demonstrate to young people today how success comes from having the right mindset.

Written with journalist Carl Anka, this is an empowering read touching on the themes of building confidence, setting goals and finding your passion.

Rashford starts the book by saying it’s one he wished he had growing up, and many adults reading alongside their children will agree with this sentiment. It

gives an interesting insight into Marcus Rashford’s personality – his love for puns, tendency to play ‘knock a door and run’ as a child and just why his first nickname was Shot – making it a thoroughly enjoyable read for both children and adults alike. (Review by Sophie Morris)
