Today, though, we are in a different place dealing with a virus that is placing unheard of pressure on whole communities and businesses, from smaller independents to larger corporates. Everyone accepts we are facing unprecedented challenges; which means rising to those challenges requires unprecedented action. That’s why the Times is this week printing a special edition aimed at supporting local businesses and through them helping the community survive and thrive as

we emerge from this second lockdown. Every advertisement is being printed free of charge; a move that we believe is a first in British publishing. Some papers have carried free adverts but not throughout the entire paper. Some 80 clients are having their regular

ads appear in this edition at no cost to them, from full pages, to halves to quarters. Plus in last week’s paper we offered free adverts to smaller, independent businesses who might not have had the budget to place ads. All those who responded are in this week, again at no cost to them.

These adverts have a book value of more than £30,000. And remember the Times, which distributes over 10,000 copies each Wednesday, is free to readers. This means ads are our only income stream. We are not suggesting this initiative itself will solve all the problems. It’s just our way of going that ‘extra mile’ for the town and follows up on earlier in the year when we ran a Back to Business campaign where we profiled, again free of charge, dozens of smaller independent businesses. Many said it helped boost their business; we’re hoping this special edition will do the same. In a ‘normal’ year we would also have supported the town through our Business Awards that have become one of the most popular nights on the social calendar.

RVP owner hit by £700million loss looks to ditch retail sites By Richard Williams THE future of Royal Victoria Place [RVP] in Tunbridge Wells was thrown into further doubt last week after its owner admitted to planning further sales of its retail properties. British Land, which bought the Tunbridge Wells shopping centre in 2018, last week posted an after-tax loss of £730million. The news comes after the company admitted £1billion had been wiped off its property portfolio due to the Covid pandemic. The company also owns a large number of office developments, which have fared much better for the company during the last year.

Some cheering news for local pub where last orders had been called By Robert Forrester A PUB that was set to close for good after its owner fell into administration last month, has been saved. The Mark Cross Inn on Tunbridge Wells Road near to Crowborough, had been earmarked for permanent closure when pub chain Whiting & Hammond called in the administrators. The chain, which also ran the Little Brown Jug in Chiddingstone was owned by local businessman Brian Whiting, who says the collapse of the the pubs was due to the ongoing pressures of the coronavirus pandemic and the Government’s restrictions, including the 10pm curfew.

Valuation British Land, which last year shelved an £80million plan to upgrade RVP in favour of an £11million facelift, says it has collected just 62 per cent of the £64million collectively owed by its retail customers. In contrast, it has collected 97 per cent of the £48million in rent it is owed from its office tenants in three months to September. The group said that the value of its overall portfolio had fallen from £11.2billion on March 31 to £10.3billion on September 30. Its retail portfolio suffered the most, losing 15 per cent over the period for a valuation of £3.2billion at the end of September. So far, the company has disposed of around £400million worth of retail properties, and is now looking to sell off more, a move which could see RVP put on the market. UNCERTAIN The future of Royal Victoria Place is in doubt at the developer last week, said they will continue to sell retail assets as they were now concentrating on out of town shopping centres as well as looking to ‘repurpose’ existing locations. Almost half the company’s retail assets are now in out of town retail parks, which shoppers drive to and which have larger shops where it is easier to avoid contact with other people. Shopping centres such as RVP and Meadowhall in Sheffield, also owned by British Land, are seen as outliers in British Land’s portfolio. Mr Carter said: “There is a clear preference

from shoppers and retailers for out-of-town, open-air retail parks.” He continued: “The biggest potential [for logistics] is around our retail parks. There’s this real crossover happening on retail parks between urban logistics, both in terms of where the rents are and more and more retailers using click-and-collect. “We’re focused on having good assets, good strategy, delivering operational performance,” Mr Carter said. “That’s the best way that you defend against anything at any point in time.”

Mr Whiting managed to save three pubs from administration under the new name of WH Pubs. Four others were set for permanent closure. When he announced the news last month, Mr Whiting said: “It breaks my heart to see the Farm Friday Street in Eastbourne; the Mark Cross Inn, Mark Cross; the Blue Ball Inn in Walton on the Hill; and the Kings Head in Bessels Green disappear and the fantastic people that have been on this epic journey lost.” But last week, a spokesperson for hospitality chain, Elite Pubs, confirmed to the Times that the group has now bought the Mark Cross Inn. However, she refused to say whether Elite Pubs plan on buying any of the other Whiting pubs earmarked for closure. The news will be welcomed by the pub industry that has seen a number of closures announced in recent weeks,including Greene King which owns the Compasses on Little Mount Sion, Marston’s which owns the Pitcher and Piano in Church Road, and All Bar One owner Mitchell & Butler.

Council loses High Court final fight against housing targets CAMPAIGNS Housing quotas have caused a number of protests in local areas

By Richard Williams A LOCAL Council that refused to build the number of houses requested by the government has had its appeal thrown out by the courts. Last year, Planning Inspector, Karen Baker, asked Sevenoaks District Council [SDC] to withdraw its draft Local Plan – the document that outlines where all new houses will be built. The inspector says the document lacked ‘constructive engagement with neighbouring authorities to resolve the issue of unmet housing need’. The neighbouring authority had fallen short of the government’s quota for building 13,960 homes by the year 2035 by making provision for only 10,568 in its Local Plan.

Residents campaign for ‘safer’ Rusthall

Justified It was the only one of Kent’s 13 local authorities to reject the high housing targets imposed on it by Whitehall. They had argued that it had too much Green Belt so could not accommodate all the new properties. SDC then attempted to challenge the Government inspector’s decision to reject the plan through a Judicial Review. But in a decision published last week, Mr Justice Dove dismissed the appeal, saying: “It is clear that the inspector had careful regard to all the material which was placed before her and reached conclusions which were lawful and appropriate. In my view, her reasons were clear, full, detailed and justified. “It follows that there is no substance in any of

the grounds upon which this claim is advanced and the applicant’s case must be dismissed.” The court found that SDC did not officially ask Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council [TMBC] for help, and only asked Tunbridge Wells Borough Council [TWBC] ‘very late’ in the process. It is unclear whether either local authority would have been able to assist Sevenoaks with their housing demands, as both boroughs are facing their own pressures to build more new homes. Last month, planning inspectors cancelled a meeting with TMBC to discuss their own Local Plan after concerns were raised about ‘legal

compliance’ of the document. TWBC is also under pressure to produce its draft Local Plan, which is more than a year behind schedule. To meet its unmet housing need, TWBC is proposing an unpopular garden village in the village of Capel and an expansion of the town of Paddock Wood. Sevenoaks Council Leader Peter Fleming said he was ‘disappointed’ by the recent ruling. He added: “Court action is never something we would enter into lightly. “We will always stand up for the communities we serve. We are reviewing the judgement in detail and considering our options.”

A CAMPAIGN has been launched by residents to introduce a speed limit in Rusthall High Street. The ‘Action for Rusthall High Street’ campaign has outlined several ideas to make the road safer and calls for action from Rusthall Borough Councillors, Rusthall Parish Councillors, Tunbridge Wells Borough Council and Kent Highways. Ideas put forward includes double yellow lines down one side of Rusthall High Street, having timed two-hour parking with no return on the other side, or a loading bay being built near the chemist with deliveries by lorries staggered. The campaign has also asked that a traffic enforcement officer be appointed to see that any restrictions are obeyed. Launched by Angela Funnell, a Rusthall resident and wife of Lib Dem councillor Dave Funnell, the initiative comes after a fatal road collision involving local man Roy Bowen as well as another incident in which a pedestrian was hit by a car. She said: “I ask all residents and shopkeepers to support this petition and let’s ask for this consultation to solve the issues on Rusthall High Street, make it a much safer and more attractive place to shop, walk and spend time.” To voice your support of the campaign, search for Action on Rusthall High Street on www. change.org

Raft of ‘petty’ complaints costing Council thousands in legal fees By Robert Forrester

TUNBRIDGE Wells Borough Council has spent more than £20,000 of ratepayers money in paying legal fees because of complaints made against its members, the Times can disclose. Only one complaint was upheld. Over the last 12 months there has been a series of complaints about both borough and parish councillors, many of them from opposition members or local party activists. Most have come from Tunbridge Wells Alliance party and its supporters. At Tuesday night’s Audit and Governance Committee [November 24], councillors were told around ten members had formal complaints lodged against them in the six months between November 2019 and July this year.

Villagers band together to block phone mast By Lottie Bulmer A COMMUNITY group is attempting to block the installation of a phone mast on a local sports field over fears it could be bad for children’s health. The Friends of Hawkenbury Rec have been spurred to campaign against the erection of a new mobile phone mast after reading the Times [September 26, 2018] reporting on the Hawkenbury residents’ of Whybourne Crest and Forest Way fight against a similar installation. Waldon, who are working on behalf of Mobile Broadband Network Limited (MBNL) for network provider O2, is installing a mast on the Hawkenbury recreation ground which is surrounded by homes. Chair of the Friends of Hawkenbury Rec – Valerie Le Moignan explained the worries residents have.

Behaviour Just one of these complaints was upheld, involving a spat between a borough councillor and a local party activist, which was dealt with by a letter of apology. But since July, the council has received a tranche of other complaints, including allegations of inappropriate email content by a councillor, alleged misuse of Council resources, inappropriate behaviour at a meeting, as well as alleged inappropriate comments made in a letter to the Times of Tunbridge Wells. All of these complaints have been rejected by the Council’s Monitoring Officer as not passing any legal jurisdiction test. In one complaint, which is currently under investigation by the Council and has been seen by the Times, a Liberal Democrat member

suggested a Conservative councillor on the Borough Council was guilty of ‘bullying’ because he had accused the opposition party of ‘virtue signalling’. The same councillor also complained that the Tory member referred to him as ‘Mr’ and not ‘Cllr’, which he claimed was a ‘calculated insult’. In total, the Borough Council spent more than £23,400 in legal fees with Mid Kent Legal Services in just six months to deal with the complaints. One councillor, who did not wish to be named, told the Times he believes the complaint system had been ‘hijacked’ to ‘silence criticism’ of

councillors. He said: “Most complaints are petty and not worth the money the Council is spending on them, but there is also a nasty element who are using the complaints system to target and harass political opponents.” The party that has made most complaints against opposition members is Tunbridge Wells Alliance, whose members or supporters have lodged six complaints against other councillors in just six months. The Council is now investigating the complaints system to reduce the legal costs of dealing with conflicts between councillors.

She said: “Unfortunately the only thing we are allowed to object to is the location of the mast. “It is a residential area, and the mast could be unhealthy, but these complaints won’t be considered because the World Health Organisation says it’s safe. “There were only six houses consulted by the company with the new installation and apart from that there has been a mixed reaction. I have written to Waldon as the Chair of the Friends of Hawkenbury Rec and we are doing our best to get the company to reconsider the build elsewhere.” A spokesperson for MBNL told the Times: “The site at Hawkenbury Recreational Ground was selected after consultation with the Local Planning Authority. All O2 base stations are compliant to stringent International Guidelines. There is no evidence of adverse health effects to any member of the public.”

A CLOTHING store in Tonbridge looks set to close after the owners finally called in administrators last week. Edinburgh Woollen Mill [EWM] group which runs Peacocks, Edinburgh Woollen Mill and Jaeger had hope to stave off administrators while they found a buyer and had appealed to the High Court to delay its collapse. But last week, the company said talks to save two of its brands – Peacocks and Jaeger – were taking longer than expected and they had no choice to put the brands into administration,

Childrensalon to give a fifth of all sales to charity this Black Friday By Richard Williams A TUNBRIDGE Wells children’s online fashion retailer is to donate 20 per cent of all its product sales this Black Friday to charity. Childrensalon, which is based in Decimus Park in Kingstanding Way, is to support both Nourish Community Foodbank, which provides meals for people facing financial hardship in both Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge, and Porridge & Pens, a charity that provides food and education to children in Ghana. Black Friday, the name given to the first Friday after the US Thanksgiving holiday, is among the busiest days of the year for retailers online and in high street stores, and many shops are expected to conduct sales to mark the day. But instead of discounting, Childrensalon will donate 20 per cent of all product sales to the two charities taken this Black Friday on November 27.

Tonbridge Swimming club is struggling to keep afloat By Lottie Bulmer SWIMMERS from a local club have launched a crowdfunding appeal to save their pool. Tonbridge Swimming Club has been struggling throughout the pandemic and has been losing nearly £3000 a month due to outgoings outweighing income. The crowd funding page aims to raise £5,000 in a bid to reverse the financial losses and now it needs community support. The club had a number of club-wide sponsored events planned for December. However, due to the current lockdown, there is uncertainty as to whether these events can take place before their crowdfunding appeal ends on December 20.

Appeal The club’s chairman, Keith Roshier shared his hopes for the appeal. He said: “I hope members and supporters mobilise not just themselves but friends, family and business contacts to keep the local swimming club swimming.” The Tonbridge Swimming Club has been running since 1911 and is a part of the town’s history. The crowdfunding page includes a £400 Fortnum and Mason luxury hamper being drawn on 18th December. Tickets are £5 for the Christmas draw as well as £3 weekly snap prizes and more prizes are being

Store supports mental wellbeing charity A DEPARTMENT store has raised money for a Tunbridge Wells mental health charity. John Lewis & Partners, located at Kingstanding Business park has raised over £1,000 for Mental Health Resource, a charity run support group for those struggling with their mental health. The sum was raised through the John Lewis Community Matters scheme, with £125 through collection tins located at the store’s café and staff

dining rooms. Shop Support Partners Tina Arnold, Vicky Andrews and Katie Yeoman chose Mental Health Resource because of the work the charity does to provide safe spaces and person-centred mental health care for over 1400 people every year. Fusion Lifestyle has three sports centres in Tunbridge Wells and has launched Fusion at Home, a selection of virtual fitness classes for all abilities to help keep the town’s residents fit throughout the circuit breaker. Perfect for fitness fanatics and reluctant gym goers alike, the classes include advanced cardio classes like HIIT and Freestyle Combat all the way through to the accessible Mature Stretch and Yoga for All. There’s even a Gentle Postural

Hub to increase biodiversity FIVE hundred trees are due to be planted in Southborough as part of a community project. The Southborough Community Hub - a new community centre project to be delivered in early 2021 is to include the planting of 500 trees donated by The Woodland Trust to encourage wildlife habitats and more pollinators in the area. Southborough Town Councillor, and member of the Hub’s project board, Nick Blackwell said: “The benefits of planting more trees are in our community are enormous. This initiative will increase biodiversity, provide shelter for wildlife, prevent soil erosion and reduce flooding.” The saplings of 16 different varieties will be planted in and around the Ridgewaye pitches and near the fencing lines of the Yew Tree Allotment site. Mike Hill, Kent County Council’s Cabinet Member for Community and Regulatory Services, who is also chairman of the Community Hub Project Board, said: “This is a great

news for the environment and for the hub project itself. “It is a shame that we cannot engage as much as we would have liked to with the community in this part of the scheme, which is going to be a great benefit to the residents of Southborough and the various organisations which will be using the hub.”

Planting Originally, it was hoped that the event could be made open to the public, however with lockdown rules, the event has had to be pared back. Carol Mackonochie, TWBC Cabinet Member and representative for the hub, said: “Planting this rich variety of trees is a lovely example of how we can benefit and enjoy local biodiversity whilst we are changing and improving the built environment. “I think the planting will be viewed as a very positive aspect of the Southborough Hub scheme.”

Daughter urges faster action on easing care home rules By Jonathan Banks A TUNBRIDGE Wells daughter, whose mothers is in care after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, has become part of a national campaign to speed up the easing of restrictions on relatives visiting their loved ones. Tamasin Absolon joined the Rights for Residents campaign group after the ‘horrendous’ experience of mother, Jill Walker (76), when she entered a home during lockdown. The group was set up by families to put pressure on Government to move quicker on the issue of care home restrictions.

‘I had to find a suitable home, a life changing decision, without even being able to view it or meet any other residents or staff. I just had to cross my fingers’ “Her behaviour became more erratic and unpredictable and she even nearly set her flat on fire.” Eventually the family ‘made the impossible decision’ to move Jill Walker into care. “I had to find a suitable home, a life changing decision, without even being able to view it or meet any other residents or staff. I just had to cross my fingers.” She packed her mother’s belongings and sold her house to pay for the care: “Another incredibly difficult, stressful and regrettable situation.” Jill Walker took a Covid test that proved negative and the day came for her to make the move.

She is a former pupil of West Kent College, Tonbridge. Health Minster Matt Hancock has launched a pilot scheme in 20 homes that will allow relatives to be reunited with family members who have not had any ‘meaningful’ visits for almost nine months. The scheme will take around four weeks and could be rolled out in December. Mrs Absolon (45) believes the initiative is ‘too little, too late ...nothing short of a cop out’. She contacted Tunbridge Wells MP Greg Clark, prior to the Government announcement, and had a Zoom meeting with him lasting half an hour. She found him sympathetic. Mrs Absolon was prompted to get involved after she found guidance for care homes during lockdown was ‘not fit for purpose’. Her mother Jill Walker (76) was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2016. Previously she was a branch manager with Citizens Advice Bureau and ran her own business in Tonbridge, the Medway Narrow Boat Company. She later lived largely on her own with family support. That support became ‘more and more’ difficult when lockdown hit in March as ‘important supportive services were withdrawn’. “Things got so bad and began to wander if left alone for even short periods,” said Mrs Absolon.

How is this humane?” Mrs Absolon said that every single day, with the current visiting restrictions, she regrets putting her mother into a home. “I feel as though I have broken every promise I ever made. “Sometimes I feel as though this isolation is killing her and it might have been better to have left things as they were - at least I could then have held her’.

If he omits this and continues with the same ambiguous guidelines that currently exist it will mean blanket bans on visiting will continue to be the default. WHAT GREG CLARK MP SAYS “Everyone has been impacted by Covid-19 and the steps we have had to take to try and prevent this deadly disease from spreading, but for the residents of our care homes and their families, 2020 has been an extremely tough year. “During the first months of the pandemic severe restrictions on care home visits were an unfortunate necessity, but with the development of far better testing techniques in recent months, I see no reason why we cannot come up with a system that allows family members to visit their loved ones in care homes far more frequently than they are currently permitted to do so. “I have written to the Secretary of State for Health to push for plans to allow rapid testing at care homes to be rolled out nationwide as soon as possible and will raise this issue directly with him when he next attends a hearing of the Science and Technology Select Committee.” MP for Tunbridge Wells Greg Clark

Dunn family lose High Court battle HARRY Dunn’s parents have lost their High Court battle against the Foreign Office over whether their son’s alleged killer had diplomatic immunity. Mr Dunn, 19, was killed when his motorbike crashed into a car being driven on the wrong side of the road by American Anne Sacoolas outside RAF Croughton in Northamptonshire on August 27 last year.

Charged Sacoolas, whose husband Jonathan Sacoolas worked as a technical assistant at the base, left the country a few weeks later after the US said she was entitled to diplomatic immunity. The 43-year-old was ultimately charged with causing death by dangerous driving last December, but an extradition request was rejected by the US State Department in January – a decision it later described as ‘final’. Mr Dunn’s parents, Charlotte Charles and Tim Dunn, claim the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office

(FCDO) wrongly decided Sacoolas had diplomatic immunity and unlawfully obstructed Northamptonshire Police’s investigation into their son’s death by keeping the force ‘in the dark’. But, in a High Court judgment delivered on Tuesday, Lord Justice Flaux and Mr Justice Saini said: “Our conclusion is that Mrs Sacoolas enjoyed immunity from UK criminal jurisdiction at the time of Harry’s death.” The judges also rejected Mrs

Charles and Mr Dunn’s claim the FCDO ‘usurped’ Northamptonshire Police’s investigation into their son’s death, finding officials “sought to assist rather than obstruct Northamptonshire Police in their investigation”. Spending review to see boost for NHS but squeeze on public sector CHANCELLOR Rishi Sunak will set out the budgets for Whitehall departments today [Wednesday] against the grim economic backdrop of the coronavirus crisis. Despite the mounting costs of coronavirus, the Treasury has already indicated that huge sums will be spent on health and other priorities. There will be £3billion more to support the NHS, including £1billion to address treatment backlogs built up while attention was focused on Covid-19 patients. The criminal justice system will get £275million to help courts cope with the cases that have built up due to coronavirus capacity constraints and tens of millions will be spent on a new counterterrorism HQ. However, there are already hints that the Chancellor – who has built his reputation on expensive giveaways – will start to tighten the purse strings. Public sector workers appear to be in line to bear the brunt of that effort with a pay freeze,

although frontline NHS staff may be spared. Mr Sunak told Cabinet ministers they would have to ‘think about public pay settlements’ in the context of the ‘wider economic climate’. The Centre for Policy Studies – a centre-right think tank – has calculated that a three-year total pay freeze would save £23 billion, or £15.3 billion if the NHS is excluded.

Enshrined The Chancellor is expected to announce that he is suspending the UK’s commitment to spend 0.7% of national income on overseas aid, with a cut to 0.5% thought likely. But this is another controversial move, as the commitment is enshrined in law and was reaffirmed in the Conservative manifesto. Weekly Covid deaths Travellers to avoid pass the 2,000 mark quarantine with tests THE number of weekly registered deaths involving coronavirus has exceeded 2,000 in England and Wales for the first time since May, figures show. There were 2,466 deaths involving Covid-19 registered in the week ending November 13 in England and Wales, the Office for National Statistics said (ONS). This is the highest number since the week ending May 22, when 2,589 deaths were registered, and a rise of 529 deaths (27%) from the previous week (ending November 6). Covid-19 deaths made up a fifth of the overall deaths in the week ending November 13.

TRANSPORT Secretary Grant Shapps has said new tests to reduce the quarantine period for travellers returning from places not on the Government’s travel corridor list are ‘for anybody who travels’ and not just business travellers, despite them costing between £65 and £120. From December 15, travellers will be able to use the negative test results to come out of quarantine after five days instead of the usual 14 days. Mr Shapps told BBC Breakfast: “I expect what will happen as this market gets going is we’ll see the cost of tests being driven down.”

Sevenoaks did not have any selective school offerings. So if students passed the 11 plus exam which deems you suitable for a grammar education they would have to travel to nearby Tonbridge or Tunbridge Wells in order to attend one.

NEARLY a decade after the plan for a secondary annex for two existing boys and girls’ grammar schools was proposed to be built in Sevenoaks - in order to meet demand for that particular area - the boys’ element can finally go ahead after Kent County Council granted it planning permission.

The Weald of Kent’s girls’ annex was officially opened three years ago by Conservative MP Michael Fallon when the first 120 Year 7 students were welcomed into the £22million expansion but for many years the boys’ additional provision hadn’t any takers from local grammars. Last year however Tunbridge Wells

Grammar School for Boys (TWGSB) confirmed that it would be investing in the second satellite offering which is based on Seal Hollow Road in Sevenoaks, on the same campus as the Christian Trinity Comprehensive which boasts around 1,140 students. Until the go-ahead was given by the government for the annexs in 2014,

In 2011 a petition was launched by the Sevenoaks Grammar School Campaign, which accumulated thousands of signatures in just a few days demonstrating the overwhelming support for the additional grammar schools’ provision to press ahead. The Weald of Kent, whose original school is in Tudeley Lane, Tonbridge, opened its annex in 2017. And now the design for the

Tunbridge Wells Boys Grammar building has been approved by Kent County Council, building work can commence with the aim of welcoming a three form intake of Year 7 students next year (2021). Plans reveal the additional educational establishment will include 15 general classrooms, plus specialist science labs, technical workshops, music and art rooms

Support When fully occupied, the three-form entry boys TWGSB annex will house 450 younger students and 180 six-formers - the same as The Weald of Kent. Headteacher Amanda Simpson told the Times: “We are very excited that from September 2021 we will offer 90 Year 7 places (three-forms of entry) at our new Sevenoaks campus. “Some students have had to commute long distances but this additional campus ensures that in the future students won’t need to travel far to get the same rich educational experience, whether they are based in Sevenoaks or Tunbridge Wells.”

Well done to the Times of Tunbridge Wells A WEEK today the national restrictions that have been in place since November 5 will be lifted. This latest round of strict measures has made an already difficult year even tougher for many of our local businesses. Although the Government and the local council has stepped up with support in the form of grants, rates holidays, furlough for workers, help for the self-employed and interest-free loans to get people through the worst, the disruption caused by coronavirus has hit many businesses hard.

Takings From December 2, all of our shops will be allowed to reopen, and – depending on the tier we are in – I hope our pubs and restaurants will also open their doors again. It couldn’t be a more important time for many businesses - the run up to Christmas being when many earn much of their annual takings. Every one of our stores has taken great steps to be Covid-secure. So, even while we keep the virus at bay, I hope the festive season will bring people back to our streets, to shop in our stores and – I hope – to enjoy themselves in our cafes, pubs and restaurants. The Christmas lights are looking terrific – a great move by the Council and the traders to spread a little sparkle and cheer.

Joe Biden’s call for unity echoes across the pond YOU might have missed it, but America had an election earlier this month. Election night turned into election week which, even now, isn’t completely over. The outgoing president wanted the count stopped in some areas but not others, and he has called in teams of lawyers to argue his ‘alternative facts’. Although the battle between Republicans and Democrats was waged across the Atlantic Ocean, the result of this election affects us all and the ripples can be felt from here to Australia. Donald Trump has taken the US out of the Paris Climate Agreement, rolled back on limiting the emission of greenhouse gasses, allowed industry to pollute, and undermined the country’s Environmental Protection Agency. In the midst of a global climate change emergency, these reckless acts hurt us all, no matter where in the world we happen to live. Trump’s divisive personality and erratic behaviour have also eroded key relationships with global bodies, such as the World Health Organisation

– a relationship you’d figure might be vital during a raging pandemic. He never exactly mastered the art of diplomacy when it came to working alongside other world leaders. Simply put, Donald Trump doesn’t play well with others. He certainly never entertained the idea of working in partnership with the Democrats, and regularly butted heads with members of his own Republican Party.

Reminder This behaviour sparked division across the US. We all watch the news. And we see parallels between the conflicts in the States and polarising topics here in the UK – I’m looking at you, Brexit! It’s not just in the States or here in Britain where we’ve witnessed divisiveness recently. The entire world is seemingly pulling apart at a time when we need to band together more than ever. It may be easy to forget, but Australia was literally on fire at the start of this year. A reminder, if ever one was needed, that humanity is

facing its biggest threat yet. Joe Biden’s refreshing acceptance speech, in contrast to Trump, began with his pledge ‘to be a president who seeks not to divide, but to unify’. Promising not to see red and blue states, the President-elect added that he would “make America respected around the world again and to unite us here at home”. This call for domestic and crossparty unity is something we should all heed. In an age of renewed tribalism, it’s perhaps time for all of us, no matter our political stance, to shut our mouths, put down our pitchforks, and start listening. We won’t always agree with each other, but we might just find new solutions and good ideas – especially living in a democracy with more than just two parties. As the sayings go: two heads are better than one – and the more the merrier! Perhaps it’s time to look beyond the winner-takes-all version of politics that pits just two major powers against each another, and work together instead?

Greens will not stand against Labour and Lib Dems I’m sure the Lib Dems will reply to Councillor Bailey’s attack on them in your pages on 18 November, but may I point out that 15 per cent of the way into the 10 years left since the Council agreed to target 2030 for local carbon-neutrality, Councillor Bailey still hasn’t produced a plan. I know because when he said in the Times in July 22 that Tunbridge Wells Borough Council [TWBC] was ‘very much on track with its plan’. I emailed him to propose he publish it, but his reply only contained some information about studies into the Council’s emissions, and criticism of members of the Climate Emergency Advisory Panel that he chairs. But the Tunbridge Wells Green Party has a

plan. In contrast to Councillor Bailey’s view that the Conservative losses in the May 2019 elections are to blame for local stagnation, we see them as the first half of a democratic push to create a Council that responds to the needs of the people of Tunbridge Wells, and delivers. In May 2021 we will not stand against incumbent Labour and LibDem Councillors, but take on those who cling to the outmoded ‘jobs and growth’ mantra that has brought us the climate and biodiversity crises, and who promoted the Calverley Square and Hendy Congestion Generator projects. Attack on public servants unjustified I would take issue with Victor Bethell’s comment about councillors being paid when they are ‘no longer in office’. I presume he means no longer working in from their offices, but in any case, he’s wrong on both counts. Councillors and, more importantly, thousands of council employees are hard at work on our behalf as usual, often in very challenging circumstances. Its simply inaccurate and frankly offensive to suggest otherwise. Whether working from home or at an office, council services are being maintained under incredibly difficult conditions. It’s very easy to criticise local government as delivering dwindling services, but you need to look to central government for the lack of funding, rather than councillors trying to juggle limited funds in the middle of a global pandemic. It’s sad that Victor starts with a feelgood story about a couple of public-spirited citizens clearing litter leads to an entirely unjustified attack on public servants. Derek Barnett Tunbridge Wells

I was wondering why your regular correspondent Cllr Matthew Bailey, of Paddock Wood West, was so keen to pick on the Lib Dems in his letter in paper November 18? I’m quite sure they are not the only part on the planning committee, surely it is cross party and needs a majority vote? I am hoping he can bring forward some evidence that the Lib Dem party are solely responsible for putting Trinity Theatre under threat of permanent closure. Page 6 and 7 of the very same paper included ideas from both Lib Dem and Labour parties for making the most of Tunbridge Wells, and hopefully this will include cycling, as that is part of encouraging sustainable travel choices, part of TWBC green plan. I think it’s a bit rich for Tunbridge Wells Borough Council to note that the land on which the ‘Motor Village’ was proposed in Pembury was a potential Park & Ride site. Anybody else shouting: ‘Yes, but you didn’t build it!’ On the same page your article states that the town has lost £300million in investment. Now, apart from coronavirus, wouldn’t the radical change in consumer buying habits internet purchasing, have something to do with people’s disenchantment with high -street shopping and, if action had been taken earlier, wouldn’t a Park & Ride have mitigated or ameliorated the hollowing out of the town? Refusal is just sour grapes.

Giving independents a voice online During the last lockdown, a number of local independent businesses looked to moving to the virtual world, and local businesswoman Annie Morgan was there to help them out, as Lottie Bulmer finds out A BUSINESSWOMAN from Tunbridge Wells has set up an online marketplace in a bid to get residents to shop small this Christmas. Annie Morgan set up Tunbridge Wells Online [Twellsonline.co.uk] during the first lockdown. It is a free service to help small independent businesses, many of whom were moving online. Now, in the last month she has launched a virtual Christmas market to raise funds for Nourish Community Foodbank which serves those in need in Tunbridge Wells. Annie told the Times what spurred her to start the movement.

I’m Tunbridge Wells born and bred and apart from briefly moving to London, I’ve lived in the town all my life! “I set up Tunbridge Wells Online in the first lockdown as many local indies were pivoting online, especially local sports and fitness businesses who were offering Zoom classes. “Since then, I have added lots of different types of businesses from dog walkers to afternoon tea delivery services. “Our local indies are having a tough time at the moment and being self-employed myself, I wanted to do something to try and help. “Tunbridge Wells Online gives local, indie businesses a platform to advertise their services and events etc and for local people

to support them. “I have also set up a Facebook group which now has over 1.3k members. We have a ‘Selfie Wednesday’ thread for local businesses to advertise their services which is popular. I also regularly share local news and events plus posts from other platforms including the fabulous ‘My Tunbridge Wells’. She added how successful the group had been and what her plans for the website’s future was. “There are over 150 local, indie businesses listed on the website and the FB group is growing bigger by the day,” she said. “I’ve also received quite a few lovely emails

from people thanking me for setting up the platform and supporting local businesses. That’s exactly what I set out to do so to me that’s a success. Next year, I am planning to start an Indie Business Club to provide business support to local, indie businesses. Demand for residential properties in the South East remains very high By Lottie Bulmer NEW properties and homes in the South East are continuing to be snapped up according to new research. A survey conducted in October by the Royal Institute of Chartered surveyors has outlined that the market in the South East continued the years’ strong year throughout the month. The number of people looking to buy a new property across the region remained positive for the sixth consecutive month, with a net balance of +59 per cent of respondents citing an increase in new buyer enquiries slightly down from +63 per cent reported in September. In keeping with the growth in demand, the number of new properties being listed for sale also increased for the fifth successive report. A net balance of +33 per cent of respondents reported a rise in new instructions in the South

East. This is the longest run of growth seen in the RICS Residential Market Survey since 2013. Simon Rubinsohn, RICS Chief Economist explained the forecast for the market.

Caution He said: “The housing market remains very busy and despite the second national lockdown, the sense is that this will persist over the coming months and into the new year. “However, there is understandably more caution about activity looking beyond the first quarter of 2021. “Aside from the withdrawal of governments incentives, the market may also find the more challenging employment picture a significant obstacle even with interest rates set to remain close to zero for some time to come. “That said, medium term expectations for house prices and

Will the Covid vaccine affect Tonbridge pulls online buyers the UK property market? THE UK housing market is set to bounce back if the new Covid vaccine is successful. Taking the lead from the stock exchange, it is possible that the property market will see a similar rise when the new drug reaches the public. Tom Bill, head of UK residential research at Knight Frank spoke of the benefits the vaccine could bring. He said: “We’ve seen what’s happened in the financial markets with the positive news around the vaccine and I don’t see why the same won’t happen in the property market. “It will mirror what we’re seeing on the traders’ dashboards but over a slower period of time.” While this is positive news for estate agents and sellers alike, the bounce from the potential vaccine still has to compete with the end of the

stamp duty holiday in March 2021. The relief from the stamp duty tax has allowed buyers during the pandemic to complete their sales and save thousands of pounds.

Pressure However time is running out for those who haven’t found their new homes yet and March could bring a wind down for sales as people no longer have the benefit of the discount on stamp duty. Richard Donnell, research and insight director for online estate agent Zoopla explained the time pressure. He said: “Just half of sales agreed in January will convert into a completed sale by the end of March, so those looking to beat the stamp duty deadline will need to be well prepared.”

INTEREST in Tonbridge properties online have surged since last year. According to Zoopla – the online estate agent, searches for the Kent town have increased by 76 per cent since 2019. This rise in interest may be due to the transport links and proximity to London attracting the mass

exodus of London residents to the countryside due to Covid. The London Assembly Housing Committee released figures from their surveys in August where it was revealed that 33 per cent on Londoners want to move out of London, with 46 per cent want the home to be outside of London.

Highgate Hill remains hot commodity for developers THE developer in charge of the 1887 Pantiles project has submitted a new planning application for a small Kent village. Dandara Homes has made a bid for a total of 73 new properties on Highgate Hill in the village of Hawkhurst. This is not the first time Highgate Hill has been

the subject of planning applications however, previously Dandara submitted an application for 49 homes and Leander one for 31. There has already been a total of eight letters of complaint over the planning notice from residents, mainly regarding the traffic issues on the hill.

The Importance Of Property Inspections Many landlords who manage their own properties do not undertake regular inspections. We understand that often landlords don’t want to bother their tenants – who are generally lovely people – but that can be a false economy and lead to costly repair bills or other issues further down the line. Daisy had been letting her flat in Tunbridge Wells for many years. New tenants moved in 4 years ago and at the first inspection all looked in excellent condition so she decided not to bother with further inspections. “This year’s panto will be pure escapism and unbridled joy…” Despite our theatres being closed for the majority of 2020 - and a second lockdown - it’s still all systems go for a socially distanced panto at the Assembly Hall. Here the venue’s artistic director JJ Almond tells Eileen Leahy how they’re making it all work to take to the stage next month When did you realise that you could put on your socially distanced panto Jack and the Beanstalk? As soon as the Government had announced the roadmap for theatres, and the Council decided to re-open - we knew that all shows were again a possibility – even panto!

Why do you think pantomimes are so important to preserve? It such an important part of Christmas and starts so many on their theatre journey – so we just had to make it work! Carole our producer had originally thought about a higher volume of shows to fewer people but at the time the restrictions still looked as if it would not be possible. But then the roadmap came and the essence of panto began to call…

How will it differ from your usual productions? It won’t be as big in terms of set changes but the script is cracking, and will still pack a festive punch for everyone! The show will be 70 minutes long, straight through and there will be three shows a day on most days! How many are in the company? We’ve selected five amazing performers in order to really reduce the chances of the cast and crew getting ill. But their quality and high-octane energy will definitely make up for the fact that

we don’t have an ensemble this year. When do you start rehearsing? We’re going to be starting them in a couple of weeks. Instead of rehearsing elsewhere we’ll be on the stage in the theatre which is nice and open and airy! And we’ll be making sure the cast stay at least two metres apart and don’t sing too closely! Other than that, everyone is just being very, very careful, adhering to all the rules and regulations to keep everyone safe. What is your main goal – apart from the

audience having a lot of fun? Our hope and intention is that the audience won’t even notice that the cast are keeping safe – we want it to feel natural. The show should be pure escapism and unbridled joy so that families can forget the tough times and rejoice in live theatre again. Can you briefly tell us what audiences will enjoy most about seeing Jack and the Beanstalk? There’ll be all the fun of the fair as we usually see - singing, dancing, jokes and laughter – a hero with a twist and a quest to save

the essence of panto! Why is it so crucial for us as residents to support your panto for this year? Panto is part of the season, it’s when many families connect with theatres and live entertainment, sometimes the only time in a year. It the first experience many of us have of theatre and starts our lifelong journey with live entertainment. Panto is a gift, and it’s our gift to everyone. And why do we need real live audiences? We need them - we are lonely without them. If we are a theatre without an audience we lose our purpose. If we want to keep venues open and live entertainment vibrant in our borough we need people buying tickets and sitting in our seats; not just at the Assembly Hall Theatre but at all the venues in our borough – we all need audiences to stay open! Would you say it’s a case of use us or lose us then? Very soon it might be that case – and no one wants that. We all have a mission to protect live entertainment, and the part we must all play is to use our venues. We know we need people to shop local, but we also need people to be entertained locally! Gallery celebrates its first birthday By Lottie Bulmer A TUNBRIDGE Wells art gallery has managed to celebrate its first year in the town, despite the Covid pandemic. Last month, Art Hub located on Mount Ephraim marked its first anniversary with an exhibition from Sussex based artist – Carne Griffiths. difficult it has been opening in the art world just before lockdown. She said: “Lockdown wiped out a huge part of the industry, but the second hand market has been really strong.” “It has impacted us because there were no couriers to bring art to us, and it has really become a sellers’ market – not a buyers’ market. “We also had someone kick the gallery’s door in during lockdown which felt like such an injustice to us. “To make sure that we stayed relevant throughout the quarantine, we launched workshops on Zoom so people could still be involved from home.” Iaysha added that the location had helped maintain interest in the exhibits.

She said: “We have sold so many things from the window. I see people looking in as they drive past, and we get commuters come in on their way to work each day. “To me, Mount Ephraim feels like a village and it’s so nice to have an art gallery in the town.

Refreshing “We update the displays once a month, so they are refreshing to viewers and we use anything from pop art to landscapes. “When they come inside people are shocked that we’re here, I don’t know how people from further afield find us though.”

“When we were designing the showroom, we used a soft colour so people can imagine what the pieces would look like at home. Before it was painted it was a bright orange! Iaysha also spoke about the gallery’s plans for its next year in the town. Teatime for artist ORIGINALLY from Liverpool, Carne Griffiths is an embroiderer turned artist. His collection ‘By Day and By Night’ was displayed at Tunbridge Wells gallery Art Hub in October as part of their anniversary celebrations. Using the unique mediums of ink, tea and alcohol, his pieces always take inspiration from nature. He spoke to the Times at the first anniversary of

Art Hub last month about his creative process. He said: “I can’t visualise before I start. I just take shapes from within nature and the four elements and free-from. Tonbridge School boys are taking part in a variety of projects which are helping to support communities on both a local and international level. Third Years have been learning about the international refugee crisis while working with the RefugEase charity. As well as helping out in a warehouse in Tonbridge, and packing donations for deliveries to northern France and to Greece, boys set themselves a sporting challenge and are collectively cycling and running a distance of 2,000 miles to raise funds. Other boys have been helping out at the Sustain Food Bank in Tonbridge, preparing food parcels for local families in need. Following fundraising activities over the past couple of years, the School has been able to provide a new computer suite in the Child Action Lanka base in Kilinochchi, Sri Lanka. This has enabled the first live ‘link-ups’ between Tonbridge boys and

Three Tonbridge teams were placed in the top five in the country during the Schools Aerospace Challenge 2020, in which students presented a proposal to the RAF on the topic of hybrid power engine systems. The ‘top five’ teams will now be taking part in a final ceremony and will also be receiving prizes for their schools.

Springing into creative action... One local art gallery turned lockdown into a creative period thanks to a special open exhibition. T’S no understatement to say that 2020 has been a tough year for most of us. But one of the hardest hit areas has been the arts and culture section which has been pretty much shut down since March. Prior to the second lockdown a few galleries were fortunate enough to be able to reopen for a while. They included ArtSpring Gallery in Tonbridge which celebrated by hosting a very successful open exhibition last month. “We had over 100 entries showcasing art created during the first lockdown,” explains Jill Goldsworthy who helps to run the popular gallery on Tonbridge High Street. “The final selection of work by 30 Kent-based artists attracted many visitors and sales,” continues Jill. “So the gallery decided to donate a percentage of sales to charity and a cheque for £300 has been given to Young Minds UK which offers coronavirus advice and mental health support to children and young adults.” A spokesperson for Young Minds told the Times, “We are so appreciative of the support from ArtSpring Gallery – the money they have raised will go a long way in helping us fight for a future for all young minds to be supported and

empowered, whatever the challenges.” Since it launched in 2016 Artspring has proved to be very popular not just with painters and creatives but visitors too, receiving lots of positive feedback from its various exhibitions over the past four years from people coming from all over the South East. The gallery is artist run and features work by painters, photographers, jewellery makers, ceramicists and printmakers. The collection of work

exhibited changes regularly and can also be browsed online. In fact, the gallery is keen for those who would usually pay it a visit in person to actively go to their

Fall for these autumn wines

Having swapped salads for stews, Times Drinks Editor James Viner says it’s also time for a warming glass of wine and presents his favourite November bottles for autumnal imbibing and dining... WITH WINTER fast approaching, here’s a tasty suite of bright and lively wines to be enjoyed around the kitchen table with seasonal food and lockdown kinfolk. Cheers! 1) BARGAIN QUAFFABLE VIOGNIER TO SUIT THOSE WHO DON’T RELISH HIGH ACID WINES Pierre Jaurant Viognier 2019, LanguedocRoussillon, France (£4.49, Aldi) Autumn isn’t just red wine season. It’s also the time to drink rich, full-bodied white wines. Aldi lists over half a dozen cracking wines under the sub-£7 Pierre Jaurant label. This is a splendid Viognier – the extremely fashionable, heady, aromatic Rhône grape, which is also relatively low in acidity – with flavours of white peach, honeysuckle, apricot, mango, cream and tangerine. A brilliant everyday wine and one to pair with seared scallops, baked crab, Coquilles St. Jacques, Pad Thai, chicken Korma, Caesar salad, pumpkin/squash ravioli (or risotto), chicken tagines and chicken and leek pies. Try it but don’t delay as it’ll likely never be better than it is now or the next six months. Stupendously worthy at the price – under £4.50!

vivid, it’s hard to beat Beaujolais for ‘gluggable’ wines made from the early-ripening, old Burgundian Gamay grape. Chiroubles is a minute, hilly appellation to the west of Fleurie with light, sandy soils. It’s the highest and lightest of Beaujolais’ ten ‘crus’ (the top tier appellation with lower yields, better ageing potential, etc.), rising to a height of 450 metres.

This fine, sappy and racy example is suggestive of dark, brambly fruits, red summer-pudding berries, flowers and graphite. Acidity is bright, boosting both length and freshness. It’s a supple, low tannin wine from a small but very good grape harvest. A savvy choice with Thanksgiving/Christmas turkey, roast chicken, boeuf bourguignon, beef stroganoff, coq au vin,

A red plum and dark fruit depth charge with sparks of sweet tobacco, cassis, cocoa and allspice, this is the complete great-value autumnal red. It’s pure, layered, sleek and poised at every turn, with a filigree of fine-spun tannins and well-integrated oak. The finish takes care of itself. Creating the perfect winter warmers... with an exotic twist As the Great British Bake Off came to an end last night we meet former winner, Chetna Makan, who is now based in Kent and find out why she’s so passionate about food that’s full of flavour

HEN Chetna Makan appeared on our screens in the last Great British Bake Off aired on the BBC in 2014 we immediately learned of her passion for packing in as much taste into every bite as possible. Week after week she baked up a storm of exotic and delicious looking sweet treats for judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood which rightly saw her crowned champion before the popular show moved to Channel 4.

Flavour Since then Chetna, who was born and brought up in a small town in Central India and then moved to Mumbai for a few years before coming to the UK in 2004, has made a living out of giving western style dishes an epicurean kick of her Indian heritage. Having always had a keen interest in food, it was after having children that Chetna found baking to be the perfect outlet for her creativity, but since her triumphant win on The Great British Bake Off in 2014 Chetna has subsequently embraced various types of cooking and recipe development through her many recipe books.

Potato and peas cheesy balls Ingredients:  4 desiree provenance potatoes  120 gms frozen peas  1 tsp chaat masala  ½ tsp salt  ½ tsp garam masala

 ½ tsp chilli powder  200 gms mozzarella cheese  2 tbsp plain flour  2 tbsp cornflour  150 gms golden breadcrumbs  sunflower oil for deep frying

Method 1. Cut the potatoes into 4 and cover them with cold water. Bring it to a boil and cook for 6-8 minutes until the potatoes are soft and cooked. Cool them for 5 minutes, then peel and grate them into a big bowl. 2. In another pan bring some water to a boil then cook the frozen peas for 2 minutes. Drain and let the peas cool for 5 minutes. 3. Add to the potatoes the spices and the peas, combine well. 4. Make the balls by taking some of the potato mix in your hand, roughly the size of a lemon and put a small piece of mozzarella in the middle and seal the ball. Repeat with all the mixture until you have about 18 balls. 5. In a bowl place the plain and corn flour and add enough water to get a thin batter. Place the breadcrumbs in another bowl. 6. Now dip the potato balls in the flour batter and then roll them in the breadcrumbs and repeat the process. 7. Heat some oil in a deep pan for frying and once it is hot, roughly 180 C then deep fry these balls in batches for a couple of minutes until golden and crispy. 8. Serve warm with a tasty local chutney.

Yoghurt potatoes with a spicy chilli kick Ingredients  1 kg small potatoes, cut into half  2 tbsp sunflower oil  4 cardamom pods  1 bay leaf  2 medium onions  2 green chillies  1 inch ginger  200g natural yogurt  1 tbsp ground coriander  1 tsp mango powder (amchur)  1 tsp ground ginger  1 tsp chilli powder  1 tsp salt  1 tsp turmeric powder  handful fresh coriander leaves

Method 1. Put the potatoes in a pan and cover it with water. Bring it to a boil and cook for 4 to 5 minutes until they begin to soften. Drain and leave them aside for 5 minutes to get rid of all the water. Pat them dry. 2. Heat some oil in a pan for shallow frying, once hot add the potatoes and cook for 4-5 minutes until golden. You might have to do this in batches. 3. Leave the potatoes aside and start with the curry. Heat 2 tbsp of oil in a pan and add the cardamom and bay leaf and let it sizzle for a few seconds. Then add the onions and the chillies and let it cook on medium to low heat for 15 minutes until

Clodagh McKenna: Let’s live for every night Irish chef Clodagh McKenna shares her joy in releasing a new book and weeknight recipes that really work for all the family

LODAGH MCKENNA actually did what many of us vaguely imagined doing during March’s lockdown: she went and wrote

a book. During that first never-ending-feeling stint, when many of us were firmly confined to indoors, the Irish cook and telly presenter turned to Instagram. Posting a daily recipe video, she hoped to go some way in answering the many, many messages she was receiving from housebound people across the country in need of lockdown-suitable dishes, non-stressful suppers, family-friendly midweek meals, interesting dinners for one, and more. “I did them every day,” says McKenna of the videos. “Every single day – I did over 120 of them. It was exhausting, but it was also a real purpose.” A whole new community sprung up around these brief snippets of chic, McKenna whipping up a solo breadand-butter pudding, or a tray of retro chicken kievs. And that community provided real-time feedback that McKenna scooped up and used to help fuel the book: Clodagh’s Weeknight Kitchen. She considers it a “a real community cookbook” – which is what made her blub when she first got to hold a finished copy. “I wanted to focus on the weeknights,” explains the Ballymaloe Cookery School trained cook. “We’ve got so much going on during the day and it comes to six o’clock, and it’s like, you’re hungry, you’re tired and

you’ve had a hard day, how can you put a meal together? Without it getting on top of you?”

Simple The result is a 100-strong brand new cache – McKenna, 45, wrote them on top of all those Insta videos – of recipes she says are “incredibly simple to make with ingredients that are completely accessible; but they’re gorgeous and they’re fun, and they’ll make you feel good about yourself.” Split into sections including ‘quick fixes’, ‘Friday night gatherings’ and ‘store cupboard standbys’, the underlying message for McKenna is the difference cooking for yourself makes. “Especially when you’ve got to get up early in the morning, [you’ve got] kids or work to look after, you’ve got to keep

yourself motivated to work at home; you need to have that something to look forward to in the evening. “Sometimes a takeaway can be great, but it doesn’t give you that same feeling of – I call it a sprinkle of happiness because that’s what it is to me,” adds McKenna, who also presents recipe segments on the Today Show in the US. “Whether it’s for one or for two, you’ve made something for yourself; physically you feel better; mentally you feel better. “That’s where the importance of cooking yourself a lovely supper at least once or twice a during the week comes in. Some weeks go by and it’s like you don’t have any special moments at the table. It all becomes TV and a takeaway, or heated up food, and you live for the weekend. I’m like, let’s live for every night.”

Roast pumpkin, mozzarella and chilli recipe

ROAST PUMPKIN, MOZZARELLA AND CHILLI FOR A SWIFT SUPPER. “With sweet pumpkin spiced with chilli and creamy mozzarella, the combinations of textures and flavours in this dish are so wonderful,” says food writer Clodagh McKenna. “It couldn’t be more simple and easy to make – a great quick-fix supper. You can swap out the pumpkin for any type of squash you like.” (Serves 2) Ingredients: n 1 small pumpkin, deseeded and cut into 5cm-thick wedges n 2tbsp olive oil n 2 x 150g mozzarella balls, drained n 1 red chilli, thinly sliced

n Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper n 2tbsp extra virgin olive oil and 1tbsp balsamic

vinegar, to serve Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/gas mark 4. 2. Place the pumpkin in a baking tray or roasting dish. Brush with the olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Roast for 20 minutes or until browned at the edges. 3. Divide the cooked pumpkin wedges between two plates. Tear the mozzarella into small pieces and scatter over the pumpkin, followed by the thinly sliced chilli. Season with salt and pepper and drizzle over the extra virgin olive oil and the balsamic vinegar to serve.

Kimchi cauliflower fried rice recipe

SUPER SPEEDY, SUPER HEALTHY. “This is a super-fast, healthy and delicious weeknight supper,” says food writer Clodagh McKenna. “Cauliflower rice is so easy to make – you just whizz it up in a food processor until it resembles grains of couscous. “Kimchi is a staple of Korean cuisine – it is cabbage fermented with ginger, garlic and chilli, and you can buy it in most supermarkets. It has a distinctive sour taste, which goes perfectly with the fresh flavours of coriander, kale, the grainy texture of the cauliflower rice and the

richness of the fried egg. It will take you about 15 minutes to make this dish.” Ingredients: (Serves 2) n 1 small cauliflower n 2tbsp olive oil n 2tsp toasted sesame oil n 1 small bunch of kale, central ribs removed, leaves sliced into ribbons n 2 spring onions, thinly sliced n 150g kimchi n 2tbsp freshly chopped coriander, plus extra leaves to garnish (optional) n 3tbsp dark or light soy sauce n 2 fried eggs and finely chopped red chilli, to serve

Method: 1. Cut the cauliflower into small florets, then pulse in a food processor until the pieces are the size of couscous. 2. Heat the olive and sesame oils in a large frying pan over a high heat. Add the kale and cauliflower rice and sauté for three to five minutes until the kale is wilted and the cauliflower rice is beginning to brown. Mix in the spring onions, kimchi, chopped coriander and soy sauce. 3. Divide between two warmed plates and serve with a fried egg each on top, a sprinkle of red chilli, and some extra coriander leaves, if you wish.

Discover the perfect country retreat to explore Shakespeare’s historic Stratford-Upon-Avon Scarlett Sangster visits the historic 16th Century Billesley Manor House and Spa, which has recently been given a contemporary flourish reserved for functions ¬– though I couldn’t imagine visiting Billesley without having a chance to experience the grandeur of those high ceilings and stone-carved interior windows. One of the most dramatic changes to the hotel has been in the library, renamed the ‘As You Like it Lounge’. Dominated by a ‘cloud’ of floating books suspended from the ceiling, it feels more Alice In Wonderland than it does Shakespeare, though it’s endearing none-the-less.

COUNTRY PILE Shakespeare’s alleged place of work

UCKED along a narrow country lane just four miles outside StratfordUpon-Avon is the 16th Century manor house where Shakespeare allegedly penned one of his most famous

comedies. Across the gravelled driveway and up the stone stairs of Billesley Manor, we are greeted with a warm wood-panelled interior, tastefully accompanied by rich navy walls and a low glow from an open fireplace. Earlier this year, the property reopened its

‘Stratford has numerous Shakespeare museums and points of interest’ WHAT ARE THE ROOMS LIKE? The hotel’s 71 bedrooms are divided between the manor and the exterior barn. Personally, I recommend a stay in the main house. We stayed in a spacious Manor House Double with modern furnishings, original three-fold panelled windows and a sprawling window seat. The bathroom had everything we needed, with both a bath and rain-effect shower, along with complimentary toiletries. Other rooms provide an extra level of refinement. The Manor House Junior Suite is particularly stunning, with the indulgent addition of a free-standing roll-top bath. My room of choice, though, would have to be the Four Poster with its grand fireplace set against original Tudor panelling, iron chandelier, cushioned window seats, and an elegantly carved mahogany four-poster, delivering a truly unique blend of historic charm and modern luxury.

HOW ABOUT THE FOOD? When it comes to breakfast, you can expect two options: a full English or a vegetarian alternative. There’s also a small breakfast buffet which has a few pastries and some cereal, if the cooked option doesn’t take your fancy. The hotel’s Stuart Restaurant follows a similar theme of old meets new, by complementing original features with modern bistro-style furnishings. Dinner is an a la carte affair, and the menu offers a good range of meat dishes and a couple of standard vegetarian options at around £20 for a main. We had scallops to start which, served with black pudding and apple jam, set the bar high. Now, I can’t speak for all the mains, but the duck left me a little underwhelmed. You don’t have to eat in the hotel though. A taxi into Stratford costs around £11 and takes you to a great selection of pubs and restaurants, all set in stunning wood-framed Tudor buildings.

HOW’S THE SPA? There’s a 25m heated pool available to guests, although the hotel request you arrive in your swimsuit and that you book your swim time in advance. We ended up sharing the pool with three other swimmers, but it was lovely temperature and I thoroughly enjoyed my 45 minutes in the water. Ordinarily, the hotel would also have a sauna and steam room for guests to enjoy, but unfortunately these were not open during our stay. Spa treatments range from a classic manicure at £40, to a 60-minute facial at £65. What else is there to do? Stratford has numerous Shakespeare museums and points of interest, including a great Tudor museum (Tudor World), a number of lovely independent book shops and wide choice of quaint little tea rooms, where you can enjoy a traditional cream tea to refuel mid-explore.

Does absolute lightness corrupt absolutely with Renault’s latest featherweight Trophy-R? Jack Evans finds out

FIRST DRIVE:

Renault Megane R.S. Trophy-R

WHAT IS IT? Renault has a rich and varied history of creating unsurpassable hot hatches. There was the 5 Turbo, the Clio Renaultsport, and even the dinky Twingo Renaultsport; all have shared a similar verve for cornering, as well as an ability to transform even the most humdrum of trips out into special occasions. Now there’s the Renault Megane R.S. Trophy-R. Arguably the hardest and most serious version of the current-generation Megane, it aims to eclipse the accomplishments of its elders and show that modern R.S. models can keep up with the best of them. So, can it? WHAT’S NEW? There’s a lot to talk about here, mostly around how much is, well, lacking. You see the standard Megane R.S. has been stripped to create this Trophy-R version, which means it hasn’t got any back seats, nor the standard car’s headline-catching four-wheel-steering system. There’s a carbon composite bonnet, huge fixed bucket seats and an ultra-light Akrapovic exhaust. But the crash diet doesn’t stop there. The rear wiper and motor have ended up in the skip too, while even the carpet is thinner – and the glass on the side windows is thinner too. In total, the Trophy-R tips the scales at 1,306kg – some 130kg less than the standard Megane R.S. That’s a considerable saving and does go to show how serious Renault is about making this car go faster. WHAT’S UNDER THE BONNET? When it comes to the engine, things remain largely unchanged. You get the same 1.8-litre turbocharged petrol engine as you do in the standard Megane R.S.

and while its 5.1-second 0-60mph sprint time might be quick enough, it’s not exactly blistering. There’s only the option to have a six-speed manual ‘box on the Trophy-R too – you’ll find no gearshift paddles here – while a combined fuel consumption figure of 35.8mpg is verging on impressive for a car of this type. Flat-out it’ll do 165mph. But the bare performance figures for the Trophy-R don’t flatter it; this is a car which is far more than numbers would lead you to believe (we’ll get on to that shortly). WHAT’S IT LIKE TO DRIVE? A car doesn’t set a Nurburgring production front-wheel-drive car record with brute force alone, and that’s immediately noticeable with the Trophy-R. It’s quick – but not necksnappingly so – but the real merits in this car lie with the way it rides and turns. Ohlins dampers on all four corners give the car a prestigious ride at higher speeds – particularly over broken asphalt – which allows you to dial in to just how well this car handles. The lightness is noticeable through the bends, where the Trophy-R breathes in, hooks up and practically fires through any twist in tarmac. In the dry, the level of grip is sensational. But even in the wet, the Trophy-R does an excellent job of tacking itself to the surface. With a six-speed gearbox to hand – certainly not the most accurate in the segment but enjoyable to use nonetheless – you have a freedom to properly engage with the car, something which is lost on many automatic rivals. HOW DOES IT LOOK? With its garish decals and huge boxy arches, the Trophy-R’s design is

definitely a case of love it or hate it. We lie in the former camp, having found the car’s rather outlandish design to be a breath of fresh air against even the wildest rival hot hatches. It even makes the be-winged Honda Civic Type R look understated. The headlights of the currentgeneration Megane look particularly sharp, while the lights at the rear have a definite ‘signature’ to them; if you ever see a Megane at night, it’s likely that the look of the lights will stand out against any other cars on the road. WHAT’S IT LIKE INSIDE? The cabin of the Trophy-R is certainly focused around the process of driving and lightness, but that’s not to say it feels overtly sparse. The materials used up front are a little on the harsh side, but there’s plenty of Alcantara used to hammer the ‘racing’ feel home. The lack of rear seats can either be seen as a massive plus, or a rather large negative. For carrying luggage, the Megane is excellent – the ‘boot’, now open and easily accessible, is huge and can swallow up plenty of items. However, if you did want to use your Trophy R every day – and we’re sure many drivers would want to – then the lack of rear seats might become a chore. That said, a car like this wears its restrictions on its sleeve, so if you’re planning on opting for a Trophy R then

there’s a good chance that you’re already aware of the trade-offs it brings. WHAT’S THE SPEC LIKE? Though it might have been heavily stripped of any real additions, the interior of the Trophy-R features much of the extras that you’d want for daily driving. Air conditioning remains fitted – though many ‘hardcore’ cars often remove this as a first port of call – while though the seven-inch infotainment system is smaller than the 8.7-inch unit you’d usually find in the Megane – again, to save weight – it’s good to use and features Apple CarPlay, so you can seamlessly connect your smartphone. There’s even cruise control, which certainly does take some of the backache out of longer journeys. VERDICT Well, Renault has done it again. The Trophy-R is what proper hot hatches should be; engaging, exciting and bristling with personality. Though the car’s engine might not shine through as a key part of the car’s overall appeal, it’s more than made up for by the Megane’s sparkling dynamics which really do shine in the UK. Yes, it’s an expensive proposition given its more-than-£50,000 starting price, but seeing as it feels like the pinnacle of the current-generation of Megane, it’s a worthwhile cost to accompany it.
