I

t’s recently dawned on me how reliant we are on technology (okay, so I’m a little late to the party on the realisation). At the end of last month it was national unplugging day – a day where we’re supposed to switch off and go gadget free.

Which, as it turns out, is easier said than done.

I had good intentions, but if you ate smashed avocado with poached eggs but didn’t post a picture online, did it really happen? What happens when you find yourself on a road diversion and only Google can get you out of driving round and round a one-way system?

Nowadays, everything is digital, and although from time to time it’s good to take a break (brunches don’t always need to be broadcast, after all), actually, technology is really useful. Like, for instance, when you decide it would be a good idea to walk around Tunbridge Wells and count how many steps you’re taking, like I did on page 98. Thankfully, I had my trusty fitness tracker watch to keep tabs, but had I been armed with just a calculator and my own counting skills, I’m pretty sure I’d be still be in The

Pantiles somewhere, frantically counting.

The warmer weather is giving us plenty of excuses to get outside, but if you needed one more, why not take a trip to see Olly Murs when he comes to Kent this month for his outdoor concert? I was lucky enough to catch up with him ahead of his show to talk all things summer – find out what he had to say on page 45.

If a summer adventure is on the agenda, then check out California’s central coast and head to San Luis Obispo for wining, dining and winding down (pg 104) – or if you want to feel like you’re on holiday a little closer to home, give new eatery Fego a try. An evening on their outdoor terrace really feels like you could be in the Med. (pg 80).

o celebrate windmills and watermills of the UK, the Royal Mail has issued a new collection of special stamps – featuring a local landmark.

The Woodchurch Windmill, near Tenterden is one of six mills recognised in the new set.

traditional Kentish smock mill, formerly one of a pair. Such mills are typically found in areas where there is a strong tradition of timber building. The upper mill, was used as an observation post in the First World War. Dating from the early 19th century, the mill stopped work in 1926 and has been restored by the Friends of Woodchurch Windmill,

together with Ashford Borough Council.

Philip Parker, a spokesperson for the Royal Mail says: “The windmills and watermills of the UK are much-loved landmarks and reminders of our rich agricultural and industrial heritage. We celebrate six of these fascinating structures with new stamps.”

Are there any nice views nearby?

I was born in Bilsington which is on the edge of the marsh. We got married in the tiny church there, and one of my earliest memories, and still one of my favourite views, is from here looking out over the marsh, particularly in spring when the lambs have arrived.

Where do you live?

I live in a farm cottage between Biddenden and Frittenden with my husband, Andrew, and our golden retriever, Penny.

How long have you lived there and what made you decide to move there?

I was born in Kent and spent most of my childhood just outside Woodchurch. When we were living in London, we spent most weekends escaping to the countryside, so decided to return to Kent on a permanent basis a couple of years ago.

What’s your favourite shop locally?

I’ve recently discovered the clothes shop Cordelia James in Hawkhurst which I love when looking for something a bit different.

We are also lucky to live down the road from West End House Gallery in Smarden,

which exhibits some very lovely artists, and is very hard to resist popping into when passing.

Where’s the best place to go for a Sunday stroll?

We live a mile or two from Sissinghurst Garden which is a great place to take the dog for a swim in the ponds and to walk around the beautiful National Trust grounds.

The best place to get a cup of coffee?

I’m not really a coffee drinker but Nutmeg deli in Tenterden does the best hot chocolate and cakes!

Where do you take people when they come to visit?

I like to take people to Boldshaves Garden.

It is a bit of a hidden gem and just happens

Where’s the best place to meet friends and socialise?

Somewhere that has either a fire in the winter or a garden in the summer. I’ve also recently come across the Three Legs Brewery in Brede which is a really great place to while away an afternoon.

What do you do when you spend a weekend or day off in the local area?

My perfect day off would involve a very leisurely breakfast, followed perhaps by a bit of yoga and a chance to catch up with friends and family.

Why do you love where you live?

Kent is very much home for me and there’s a definite sense of community where I live.

1st  Town Sounds Head to the Recreation Ground in Tenterden on July 1 and 2 for one of the biggest events of the year – Tentertainment. Headlining on Saturday is the Frequent Flyers, and Sunday’s headliner is local musician Adam Chantler who you might recognise from 2014’s Britain’s Got Talent. 3rd  Storytelling sessions Bring the whole family along to Knole Park for storytelling in the bookshop – running from 11am to 11.30am on July the 3, 10 and 17. 7th  Folk Fun Phil Odgers, one half of the The Men They Couldn’t Hang, is performing at St Edith’s Hall, Kemsing this July. usicStation Directors Julie Parker and James Sedge have been at the forefront of music education in Kent since 1999 and have taught students from beginner to BA Hons/ post-graduate level.

Many of these students now have successful careers in the music business.

ummer is in full swing, but we’ve got our eyes on autumn. As we enter our busiest season here at Trinity, we’ll try and tame our excitement about putting on two of our own productions! With our Artistic Director John Martin leading us off to the Land of Oz this Christmas, we first have a right ol’ hoot with One Man, Two Guvnors (August 26 – Sep 3). The National Theatre’s award-winning comedy is a glorious celebration of British humour – a unique, laugh-out-loud mix of satire, songs, slapstick and glittering one-liners.

Fired from his skiffle band, Francis Henshall becomes minder to Roscoe Crabbe. But Roscoe is really Rachel, posing as her own dead brother – who’s been killed by her boyfriend Stanley Stubbers. Francis spots the chance of an extra meal ticket and takes a job with one Stanley Stubbers – but to prevent discovery, he must keep his two guvnors apart. Simple.

Based on The Servant of Two Masters by Carlo Goldoni, with songs by Grant Olding, this production is a fantastic night

As much as we look forward to all this autumnal excitement, we’ve still got plenty on in the meantime. Our cinema is set to screen the re-mastered One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest, widely regarded as one of the best films ever made. Taking to the

stage this month, TTC bring us the classic Sleuth ( July 11 – 15). Made famous by the 1972 film starring Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine, TTC bring Antony Shaffer’s Tony-award winning play to Tunbridge Wells.

I

t’s a really sticky subject – you snoop and find something, you’re justified. You snoop and come up empty handed, you have (at best) broken your partner’s trust.

And what if you have just a little peek, only to find (whilst elbow deep in month-old Facebook messages) a slight hint of something to arouse suspicion? Not enough to throw around accusations, but enough to send your stomach rolling?

If ever your attention has been caught by a phone left unattended, or emails left open on the screen, then you are not alone: a 2012 study by Derby, Knox and Easterling found that about two-thirds (66%) of participants admitted to surreptitiously looking through a partner’s private messages, including social networking sites and texts on their phone.

Modern technology offers a whole new variety of ways to spy on your partner.

Looking through drawers and checking for lipstick on the collar is now quite an antiquated practice. Oh, no – jealousy has gone mobile.

But why do we snoop? Primary motives recorded from the study were ‘suspicions’ that

the partner was cheating, or even just a simple ‘curiosity’. Recently faced with my partner’s Facebook account left open on my iPad, the temptation was definitely there, and after spending the best part of an evening reaching for the tablet and then slapping my own hand away, I did what any twentysomething girl would do – I turned to my nearest and dearest group of girlfriends to ask about their sneakiest moments.

Conclusions were, for the most part, pretty synonymous; snooping may be a breach of trust, but it can also expose some untrustworthy behaviour. Overly friendly texts, plans with an ex, notifications from dating sites, and worse. Sometimes, you just have a sixth sense, a feeling that something is up. When your senses are tingling and a phone is ready for snatching, controlling the urge to snoop isn’t easy.

Yet, giving into temptation can have some drastic consequences. The risk that comes with checking your partner’s private correspondence is that you may find material, however ambiguous, that causes you to feel jealous, and all this sneaking around raises a

big question: is it wrong to read your S.O texts or emails if you end up learning they have been hiding things from you, or does prying make you the deceitful one in the relationship?

My friend Jodie’s snooping started innocently enough: looking through his Facebook to see if he was still friends with his ex. As her lurking continued, she discovered that they had been talking again and were planning on meeting up. The messages were from a couple of months back and their conversation was left on the promise of seeing each other for a ‘catch up’, but she had no way of knowing if their plans had come to fruition.

She was left in this awkward limbo – what she had found was enough to upset her, but not enough to confront him and expose her own (potentially lesser) transgressions. She decided the whole thing was a mistake and wished she had never bothered.

Unfortunately, Jodie’s sneaking was born from curiosity. Pandora’s Box springs to mind. If you’re going to snoop, you need to prepare yourself for what you may find.

Another friend Karen confessed that, when she found out an ex was cheating on her, she “injected two pints of milk into his mattress…in the height of summer”. Maybe it’s true what they say – hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.

This rant is certainly not here to offer advice – I am just as clueless. I have no idea what is the right thing to do (or not to do) in this situation. But, while you should enter into a relationship totally trusting your partner, when you get that unshakable feeling that something is up, trust your instincts.

And did I finally give in to taking a scroll on the iPad? Yes. Did I regret it? Yes. Would I do it again? Definitely. We don’t all have the willpower of saints…

My room is quite small – how can I maximize my space?

Irrespective of what theoretical physicists tell you, space isn’t infinite, worse still it can be bordered by big stuff like bricks and sometimes, tragically, you can’t knock through – never mind – let’s make the best of things.

The key to this is to pose and answer questions. How many people do you need to sit? Who eats at the dining table, or joins in the Christmas ludo championship around the coffee table? Then work backwards leaving as much space as you can.

Half a metre between a sofa and a coffee table is good, three quarters between a dining chair and a wall – lets you pull out the chair. A console table behind a sofa can be an effective reach for your glass of bubbles… whereas a distant coffee table can be a bit of stretch.

If you decide to use a designer, check a few points – to help you both. What is their ‘style’? Does it reflect your dreams and aspirations? One spot lit chair, glittery walls and Dire Straits booming from your Bose might look lovely, but won’t be very practical when the family arrives on Christmas morning!

ince bursting on to the scene in the X Factor eight years ago, Olly Murs has rarely been out of the charts, or off our screens. Known as the ‘cheeky chappy from Essex’ when he came runner-up on the music talent show in 2009, he’s now regarded as one of the nicest pop stars around – a reputation that might not be as headline grabbing as those of some of his peers within the industry, but nevertheless, it’s no bad label to have. And, having met Olly a couple of times now, I can confirm, that his reputation does precede him – he really is very nice.

It’s fair to say that generally, we want nice people to be successful – which is probably why to date, Olly has amassed more than 10million record sales, released five albums, had four UK number ones, achieved sell-out tours around the world, presented the Xtra Factor and the X Factor…and is showing no signs of slowing down.

Born in Essex in 1984, prior to his big break Olly was a recruitment consultant who had previously played football semiprofessionally. Always a lover of performing, he decided to take the chance in 2009 by auditioning for the X Factor, eventually finishing second, but landing a record deal nonetheless. The rest, as they say, is history.

This summer he takes to the stage again to do something a bit different to his usual packed-out stadium shows. His schedule is just as crammed, but to embrace the British summertime, he’s performing at a series of concerts in the great outdoors – where fans can sit back, relax and enjoy the sun setting (or the odd rain shower) to Olly’s back catalogue of hits. This month, he comes to the Spitfire Cricket Ground in Canterbury, so I caught up with him to find out more…

It’s been a tough time for live music with the recent events in Manchester. As a musician, how has the attack affected you and your approach to performing?

Manchester is a place I spend a lot of time, I’ve performed there and I’m a big Manchester United fan, I think they’re strong and they’ve all pulled together. As a musician you want everyone to be at your gig with a smile on their faces and enjoying themselves, that’s really what it’s all about.

Obviously you hope nothing like that ever happens, but you just have to carry on.

What can audiences expect when they come to see you this summer?

I mean, it won’t too different from the normal tour or how I normally perform, but obviously it’s outside and it’ll be a lot of fun.

my favourite is Justin Timberlake’s Can’t Stop The Feeling – although it’s quite funny because my mum actually thought it was one of my songs! When she saw me perform it for the first time, she said “I like your new song,” and I said “what do you mean?

Nobody’s heard it yet!”

Speaking of new songs, you’ve just released Unpredictable with Louisa Johnson, who’s also supporting you on tour – how did the collaboration come about?

I was presenting the X Factor the year she was on it, and so we got to know each other that way. We’re both from Essex and have a lot in common, so we’ve become good friends. She’s so talented too.

Is there anywhere on your summer tour you’re most looking forward to visiting or performing?

I’d probably say Colchester, because it’s near where I’m from in Essex, so it’ll be like a homecoming gig.

Apologies, you’ll have to cross the border to Kent when you come to Canterbury…

Well you asked! I’m obviously looking forward to coming to Kent too. There’s a Kent and Essex rivalry, but it’s a friendly rivalry!

It’s been eight years since your career began when you were on the X Factor…

[Laughs] Alright! Don’t make me feel old!

Sorry! But you’ve had some amazing successes and great longevity, which a lot of X Factor acts don’t have. What’s your secret to success?

I think I’m always striving for the next thing: you’ve got to have that drive. I always wanted to be successful in my career and I think when you’re passionate about what you do you become obsessed with it. This year I’ve tried to be a bit less obsessed.

The X Factor will be starting again soon. As someone whose career began on the show, how do you feel when people criticize acts

that come from the programme?

I think quite often people who say things like that are musicians who have something to promote or plug, and it’s an easy thing to say to get a reaction. I always say that the X Factor is just a platform, you have to work hard for your career once the show’s finished. But, if you’re a musician or love music, why wouldn’t you want someone to do well?

What do you get to do when you have down-time during summer?

I love to go on holiday and enjoy the sunshine, go to parties…I recently went to Vegas and LA with some friends which was amazing, we went to pool parties and just got to hang out in the sun and chill!

And, other than your own music, what’s your favourite song to listen to in the summer?

Oh that’s easy! Summertime by Fresh Prince and Jazzy Jeff. Actually I’m going to go and listen to it right now…

A “

m I not too old for this?” a question many of my clients who’ve already hit the big 4.0 often ask me.

“No” is my answer, because it’s not about what you wear, but how you wear it. And how you wear it often comes down to how confident you are.

Like most women, I’ve had my fair share of moments in my life where I’ve felt uncertain about myself, questioning whether what I’m doing is good enough. My clothes have always been my armour and have followed me on my path to discovering who I really am. From my teenage years through my 20s and 30s, I have experimented with lots of different styles and looks (some pretty good, others, less so). And now that I have myself reached 40, I can safely say that my style continues to help me express who I am, and that is a pretty comforting thing.

However, I am well aware that knowing how to successfully create your own style isn’t easy for everyone (which is one of the reasons I do what I do). But one thing is for sure; never let your age step in your way of defining who you are through your clothes. If anything, keep experimenting and trying new things in and out of your comfort zone until you feel truly happy with your style.

NEW TO BELLA VOU Sue Mitchell is an experienced aesthetic nurse who has recently joined Bella Vou. We met her to find out more about her role within the Tunbridge Wells clinic say “oh my god, I feel so much better about myself”. It’s not all about vanity; people used to think that cosmetic surgery was, but now there’s such a good availability of treatments to suit every pocket, age and needs. Actually when you don’t feel good about yourself you don’t express yourself well, but when you feel confident, you’ll feel better. There’s beauty within every decade of our lives, but we can look after it, keep it maintained and I think to do that is good.

How have your first few weeks been?

It’s been great, really lovely. I’m really enjoying it, it’s been very different. I’m in theatre and also aesthetics – I’m very lucky because I can do both, so half my week is downstairs in theatre and the other half is in the clinic doing things like botox and skin peels.

What’s your background?

I started as a nurse – I’d always been in the theatre area of nursing. I was actually at an appointment with another plastic surgeon to discuss a mole, and I said “I think there’s an opening for nurses who’ve got a special interest in plastics”, so he suggested I train as a beauty therapist.

So, I did a two year course, which I condensed into a year in Brighton, and during that time I was asked to go and work in London and train in sclerotherapy and filler. Following that I was asked to go and work for a plastic surgeon, and then after that I went and did cosmetic camouflage, so treating things like burns and tattoo covering. I then went on to do various courses in breast work, and then I trained as a counsellor!

What’s a typical day at work like for you?

It’s full on! I start just before 8am, and on a typical surgery day, like today we’ve done two facelifts.

In-between that I may well see a couple of patients

for botox and filler, but generally we try to keep the clinic appointments and the surgical appointments to separate days.

Another day I’ll start at 8am preparing for clinic and then it’s a full day of treatments.

Because of what you do, do friends and family often ask for advice?

Not very often, outside of work I rarely talk about anybody’s face unless they specifically ask me for advice on treatments they could have. I’d never say to someone “oh I could…” that’s not my style! To be honest, when I’m not in work mode I don’t even notice people’s faces!

Are there any procedures you particularly enjoy doing?

I haven’t got a favourite, I enjoy doing all of them, and I like the fact that I have a great mix, so no one day is the same. I’m quite passionate about peels after a facelift, or if you didn’t want to have surgery I think peels can give your skin a great quality, particularly when you’re middle-aged. It helps smooth the skin and can really do quite a lot.

What are some common misconceptions about cosmetic or aesthetic surgery that you regularly come across?

One of the most common things is people saying to me “I don’t want a trout pout”, I don’t want “that” look. The look they’re talking about is actually quite popular in younger people, some girls like that look.

Or they’ll ask: “Will I look like a celebrity?”

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?

I think seeing the patients about a month later, and they

ummer is the ideal time to ‘eat the rainbow’ and pack your plate with colourful, nutritionpacked ingredients, from seasonal fruit and berries to home-grown salad and vegetables. Nature serves up ‘superfoods’ all year round, however; it’s just a question of getting familiar with each season’s finest.

But, with our unpredictable climate, what should we be eating when the weather changes, so we’re in good health 24/7?

“While it’s important that we include superfoods in our diets all year round for their nutritional value, at certain points in the year our bodies naturally lack certain nutrients more than others due to seasonal changes,” says Safia Morsly-Fikai, health & lifestyle coach, Nurture You (www.trynurtureyou.com).

Here, she shares her tips on how to introduce healthy foods to suit the seasons...

SPRING BEE POLLEN: An extraordinary superfood, it acts as a great source of protein and contains more amino acids than beef. In appearance, it comes as a little orange ball made by honeybees and takes them about eight hours a day for one month to make a teaspoon dose, and each pellet contains more than two million flower pollen grains. Pick the organic version to avoid pesticides. It’s also a great ingredient to include in smoothies for an extra boost.

CORDYCEP MUSHROOM: Used by professional endurance athletes, cordycep streamlines your body’s energy use by increasing blood flow to your liver and other organs, improving overall oxygen use.

Additionally, cordyceps is thought to minimise fatigue and maximise stamina. Dried cordyceps can be added to soups or tea.

SUMMER RASPBERRIES AND MINT: Raspberries are an antioxidant powerhouse. They have a low glycaemic index (low in sugar). For a refreshing flavour, add a dash of mint.

It may not sound like anything new, but mint can be used as a medicinal herb to treat stomach aches, chest pains and even IBS. It can also be used as an essential oil for headaches or nausea during the summer heat.

SWISS CHARD: A leafy green Mediterranean vegetable, it tastes a bit sweet and is very easy to include in your diet. Rich in phytonutrients and antioxidants, it has antiinflammatory properties. It’s also an excellent source of vitamins C, E, A, manganese and zinc.

AU T U M N TURMERIC: Turmeric is a root that doesn’t look too dissimilar to its cousin, ginger root and contains chemicals that both prevent inflammation, and fight it once inflammation takes hold.

HOLY BASIL: A plant that has been

used in Ayurvedic medicine (one of the world’s oldest holistic healing systems) for thousands of years and it’s now making its way into the world of superfoods. It helps the body counteract the effects of stress, resist fatigue and exhaustion by supporting the adrenal glands and the immune system, helping to eliminate toxicity. It also contains many anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties and can be mixed with green tea for extra flavour.

WINTER REISHI MUSHROOMS: Highly regarded in Chinese medicine, they’re said to nourish and support adrenal function. Best known for promoting health immunity, resistance to colds and infections, and reducing inflammation, it also helps support the body’s natural abilities to detoxify.

Can also calm the nervous system and promotes deeper, more relaxing and restorative sleep.

WHEAT GRASS: During winter (aka the cold and flu season), it’s important to keep a strong and balanced immune system. Wheat grass, an amazing nutrient-dense superfood, helps detox and reduce inflammation, whilst offloading toxins – helping to avoid infections.

p until a few weeks ago, we assumed the Queen’s finely manicured nails were painted with a gloss spun from silk and adorned with the finest gold leaf, soaked in champagne…or something. We definitely didn’t think she used the very same nail polish we have at home, which only costs £7.99 a pop. But, it was revealed recently that Her Majesty’s go-to varnish is none other than Essie’s Ballet Slippers – a pale pink polish she’s been coveting since 1989. So, this got us thinking…what other everyday products do the royals use? And, as we’re in the vicinity of a royal town, should we be stocking our cupboards with these regal items?

WAITROSE You probably wouldn’t catch the Queen and Prince Philip pushing the trolley around doing their weekly grocery shopping, but nevertheless, Waitrose has held a royal warrant since 2002 after the branch in Windsor, Berks, began supplying the Royal Household. It’s the first, and so far the only supermarket chain to hold a warrant.

CLARINS In 1952 Queen Elizabeth II commissioned the company to make her own shade of lipstick to match the ceremonial robes, and has been using the brand ever since – although they were only issued a royal warrant in 2007. During the evening, fun was had by all, as guests tried the buzz wire challenge, helped themselves to sweet treats at the confectionary cart, and those who were feeling lucky played on a casino.

e don’t believe in rules.” That’s the ethos of Sevenoaks’ newest restaurant, Fego. The eighth (and largest) eatery in the group, the establishment is set to shake up the way we think about our meals – in fact, it’s actively encouraged to have pancakes for dinner and steak for breakfast.

When we visit it’s only been open a matter of weeks, but already seems to have a captive audience. Some guests sit out on the patio to enjoy a drink in the summer sun, big family groups celebrating occasions sit around enjoying platefuls of food, friends catch up…there’s certainly a buzz around Fego, and judging by the contended look on each person’s face, nobody regrets their decision to visit.

This is the type of restaurant that wouldn’t look out of place in a cool London suburb – the stylish interior, chilled

atmosphere and healthy, yet tasty food makes it both a foodie destination and an instagrammer’s dream.

We’re shown to our table – right by the doors to the outside patio, so we can enjoy the sunny evening without getting chilly,

and presented with the dinner menu. We order our drinks – the Hill & Dale Sauvignon Blanc (£7.50 for 250ml) and a glass of the Kleine Zalze Bush Vines Chenin Blanc (£7.75 for 250ml) which are both crisp, fruity and perfect for the

summer, and set about deciding what to have to eat.

I sometimes feel vegetarians get a raw deal when dining out. How often does the menu only proffer a goats cheese tart or risotto to appease the veggie among the group? Not Fego – their meat-free offerings are plentiful, from egg-filled brunches to vegetable curries. And, no limp pastry in sight.

As it’s a warm evening, and I’m sipping on white wine in the sun, I’m drawn to items I’d order on holiday – the grilled baby aubergine to start (£4.75) and the baked salmon to follow (£8.95), while my guest opts for the burnt aubergine (£5.25) and the vegetable curry (£11.50).

While we wait for our first course to arrive, we muse over the eclectic décor surrounding us – it’s like something straight out of a Pinterest inspiration board – a stylish mix of Mediterranean, industrial and Scandi-chic, with quirky pottery adorning the wire shelves, bright cushions on the long bench seats and patterned tiles lining the terracotta steps.

Our starters arrive and we eagerly tuck in. My guest’s aubergine is served like a dip in a bowl with strips of focaccia, while my grilled aubergine comes beautifully presented on a plate sprinkled with pomegranate seeds and drizzled with tahini, chimichurri and pomegranate seeds. My guest admits she’s not usually a fan of aubergine – but these she’s enjoying. My grilled aubergines melt in the mouth, and the flavours from the chimichurri and tahini, while subtle really elevate the vegetable.

The ambience in Fego feels very relaxed – there’s no pressure, and when we do eventually finish every last mouthful of our starters, there’s a decent amount of time before the next course arrives. When it does, however, I realise I’ve made an error. My salmon is beautifully presented atop a bed of kale, and served with roasted sweet potato – but, the menu didn’t specify that the dish came with any extras, so, before me is now my (quite generous)

plate of salmon and extras, as well as two sizeable side dishes (coincidentally, a kale salad and more roasted sweet potatoes – I’m nothing if not predictable). I ponder for a moment on whether I can consume everything in one go, before my guest suggests that perhaps I could take the leftovers home for tomorrow’s lunch.

Crisis averted, I begin to tuck into my salmon, and it’s delicious – fresh tasting, complemented the kale, and the sweet potatoes are roasted to perfection. My guest is equally as enthusiastic about her curry choice, which is lightly spiced and full of flavour.

The food feels wholesome, like good home cooking. Not like anything I could cook, mind you, but it’s fresh, filling and healthy, with generous portions. I begin to wish I lived in Sevenoaks so I could eat here every day and not have to worry about cooking ever again (I’m sure the husband wouldn’t complain).

Main courses finished, and side dishes boxed up for tomorrow’s lunch, we take a look at the dessert menu.

There are so many mouth-watering options, from hot cookie dough with salted caramel ice cream, to a fruit plate, but we’re just too full to contemplate anything other than a fresh mint tea. Even gentle encouragement from the staff can’t sway us – but we vow to return very soon. Maybe tomorrow to try everything on the dessert menu. After all, if Fego doesn’t believe in rules, then neither do we…

inner parties. The term can’t help but conjure visions of Hyacinth Bucket fussing over napkin rings and place settings.

But radio and TV presenters Alice Levine and Laura Jackson are keen to set the record straight.

Over the past four years, the pair, who met at a jumble sale, have devoted any spare time from their respective Radio 1 and ITV2’s Take Me Out: The Gossip hosting duties to cooking for paying guests at their London supper club.

And it’s not as fusty as the name implies.

“I remember being at university and having people round for dinner so I don’t think dinner parties have all those eighties connotations of it being avocado mousse or melon and Parma ham now,” says Levine.

“It’s a very modern way to have all your friends around the table and have a catch-up.

You go to a restaurant and you’ve got to be out at a certain time and maybe the wine is a bit too expensive, or maybe there’s a vegetarian and there isn’t a vegetarian option.

“With a dinner party, you call the shots.

It’s just about having all your friends around the kitchen table and entertaining.”

And now they’ve compiled their meal collections into their first cookery title, Round To Ours. They’re clear the book isn’t a one-stop shop for definitive recipes; it’s more a collection of meals for loosely themed food events, including hungover brunches, movie nights, late summer barbecues and

summer garden parties. Each is designed for ease of entertaining rather than hosting Michelin-starred events.

Neither author is formally trained in the kitchen, nor too proud to admit that sometimes things don’t go to plan – like, for example, when it took 12 attempts to make a successful lemon tart.

“No one is ever happy if something goes wrong when you’re cooking, because everyone wants it to be perfect, but at the end of the day, it’s just food,” reasons Levine.

“If it all goes wrong, you can order pizza.

It’s not the end of the world. You just have to think on your feet and usually, it’s just a little bit of the recipe that has gone wrong and the rest of it is salvageable. So if you’ve burnt the top, cut the top off and use everything else.

“Our evenings are about people leaving and thinking, I’ve had such a fun time, I’ve been well looked after and the food’s been plentiful.

“It’s not about having a cordon bleu experience, and with dinner parties, too, it’s about you making an effort and making people feel wanted and special, so if something goes wrong, you have to laugh it off.

It’s not about keeping it a secret and not letting anyone know. You have to be like, ‘You’ll never guess [what’s happened], it’s been a disaster. Let’s move on. Let’s get the crisps and dip out’.”

ROAST SALMON STUFFED WITH WATERCRESS ★ 115g unsalted butter, softened ★ Grated zest and juice of 1 lemon ★ 200g watercress, woody stalks removed, roughly chopped ★ 120g breadcrumbs ★ 1 small banana shallot, finely chopped ★ 1 whole salmon, about 2-2.25kg, gutted ★ 1 lemon, thinly sliced ★ Sea salt and black pepper ★ Preheat the oven to 170oC/gas 3.  Put 90g of the butter, the lemon zest and half the juice, the watercress,

breadcrumbs, shallot and plenty of seasoning in a bowl and mash together with your hands until well mixed. Spread the stuffing inside the cavity of the salmon.  Tie the salmon together at intervals with kitchen string, so that the space between each set of ties is roughly one portion - try to achieve equal portions while taking into account that the salmon tapers towards the tail end.  Cut a slit in each segment of salmon and insert a half-slice of lemon (you may not need all the slices). You can protect the head and thinner tail end of the fish with a layer of well-greased foil, to slow their cooking.  Squeeze the remaining lemon juice over the fish and spread the remaining 25g butter over the top.  Cook in the oven for 30 minutes, or until it is cooked through but still pink and lovely and moist.

SUMMER BERRY AND PISTACHIO PAVLOVA FOR THE PISTACHIO MERINGUES: ★ 10 large egg whites ★ Large pinch of salt ★ 500g caster sugar (white is better than golden) ★ 140g shelled pistachios, chopped FOR THE TOPPING: ★ 650ml whipping cream ★ 25ml elderflower cordial (optional) ★ 600g mixture of fresh fruit (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries) ★ 45g shelled pistachios, roughly chopped ★ Fresh mint leaves ★ Fresh edible flowers (optional)  Heat the oven to 110oC/gas 1/4. Line four baking sheets with baking parchment (you may need to cook the meringue in batches if you don't have enough baking sheets or oven shelves) and draw a circle 20cm in diameter on each sheet. Turn the sheets over so that the circles are visible from underneath.  Place the egg whites and salt in a large, clean bowl. Using an electric whisk, and starting on a low speed, whisk into a foam, then increase the speed a little and whisk until the whites stand

in stiff peaks. Up the speed again and add the sugar a tablespoon at a time, whisking for about five seconds between additions, until all the sugar is incorporated and you have a glossy mixture. Now use a metal spoon to fold in the chopped pistachios.  Place a tiny dot of meringue underneath each corner of the sheets of parchment to hold them in place. Divide the mixture evenly between the four trays and, using the back of a large serving spoon, spread the mixture out to fill the four marked circles.  Bake in the oven for two hours, then turn the oven off but leave the meringues in the oven until they are completely cold.

(At this stage, you can store the meringues in an airtight container, separating the discs with baking parchment; they will keep for a few days. Or you can freeze and use within one month.)  When ready to serve, whip the cream to soft peak stage, then stir through the elderflower cordial, if using.  Spread the cream over the meringue discs and top with the fruit. Sprinkle over the chopped pistachios, mint leaves and edible flowers if you have some.

ome of us can only dream of jetting to sunnier climes this month and for those of us stuck in Blighty and hankering after an oasis of calm with a smattering of holiday spirit, Jeans Kitchen and Wine Bar has the answer.

Tucked away behind Tunbridge Wells’ St John’s Road the popular eatery boasts a stunning courtyard, lush beds of flowers, delicious eats and thirst-quenching cocktails.

For those nursing a summer hangover or wannabe sun-seekers wanting to escape the 9 to 5 drudgery with a mood-boosting bite, there’s now a sumptuous newly-launched summer menu with plenty of healthy dishes along with the famous Jeans burger – already legendary in the town despite the restaurant opening barely six months ago.

Not only that, Garry Jeffery and his family-run business are flinging open their doors on Friday July 7 for a good-old fashioned garden party with canapés and a glass of Pimms or Prosecco to celebrate their new outside space.

The terrace – along with a sleek overhanging balcony – is luxuriously spacious, with 70 seats, generously filled flower tubs, comfortable garden furniture and even a koi fish pond at its

centre – perfect for little visitors to take a (careful) peek at.

“Everyone’s welcome here, there’s a lot of space for everyone from people fancying a break from the office to students to mums and dads with little ones, if you want to put your feet up and get into the summer sprit. Join us!” Garry says.

“The garden launch party on Friday July 7 will start from 5pm, and love to see old faces, new faces – people who want to see what we’re about… refreshing summer drinks are on the house as are some tasty canapés to get you into the summer spirit.”

Jeans Bar and Kitchen has been a labour of love for Garry and his family – his children Connor and Millie also help run and manage the 72-capacity eatery – and their enthusiasm is infectious.

Since opening one cold winter’s day in January, Jeans has undergone a series of mini-makeovers and now boasts a new all-day brunch menu along with a bottomless Prosecco option, a new dinner menu and a string of themed evenings including mid-week Mexican and YouMeWe, a house/electro DJ night on a Thursday.

More is on the horizon with plans for yoga classes, date nights and a pull-out roof for the garden when the British weather isn’t so kind.

There’s hundreds of residents, office workers, teachers, pensioners, young people, parents – we’ve asked Tunbridge Wells what they want and we’ve listened.

“Firstly, we’re not just about the burgers anymore, we quickly got a reputation for specialising in that and while it’s a firm fixture on the menu, we’ve expanded the menu to include healthier options like wraps, salads and club sandwiches.

“The bottomless Prosecco option has also proved popular so that’s something we’re keeping.

“Another great thing about Jeans, and something people seem surprised about on their first visit, is there’s lots of space. We’ve made a conscious effort to ensure there’s plenty of it, no-one’s crammed in and it’s working – we see people coming in for business meetings and mums meet-ups with young children who’ve discovered there’s plenty of room for prams.”

And the facilities on offer don’t stop there.

As well as the main kitchen restaurant downstairs, complete with striking timber floors and exposed brickwork, there’s also a separate and sumptuous bar upstairs with cosy snugs and Chesterfield sofas as well as a 19th century beautifully-converted coach

house outside for private parties.

“Being 150 years old the coach house takes 50 standing and is an intimate space in a really unique building,” Garry says.

“We’re taking bookings for a range of occasions from hen parties, parents’ gettogethers, private family meals and business meetings.”

And with the summer now in full swing, the outside space also comes into its own.

f you enjoy sipping on an ice-cold cocktail but cherish childhood memories of licking a lolly, then ‘poptails’ made with your favourite tipple will have you rolling, swirling and dipping your way to cocktail lolly heaven.

To make the perfect poptail, all you need to do is exchange your cocktail shaker for a mould, your jigger for a jug, and your bar spoon for a wooden stick.The garnish remains the same as a cocktail, but the preparation could inspire the most talented mixologist to raise the bar.  NOTE TO SELF: Turn your freezer to the coldest setting and be careful not to exceed the amount of alcohol stated in the recipe or it will remain slushy.

NAPOLEON'S RETREAT [MAKES 8-10] Champagne, strawberries, cream This delicate blend was invented by Napoleon’s chief steward and tastemaker, the Marquis de Cussy, at the time when champagne was drunk in secret by nobles who were afraid of the guillotine. It became Napoleon’s favourite dessert cocktail, and we’ve frozen it into a poptail. Enjoy the pops on their own or pour out glasses of champagne, prosecco or white wine, and swirl them as you get ready to ‘retreat’ into bliss.  INGREDIENTS: 450g strawberries, hulled and chopped, 100g caster or granulated sugar, plus 3tbsp, 200ml champagne, 120ml double (heavy) cream.  METHOD: Put the strawberries in a bowl, sprinkle them with sugar and stir, then pour in the champagne. Allow the mixture to sit for 30 minutes so the flavours develop, then blend to a puree in a food processor. Stir the three tablespoons of sugar into the cream. Pour the strawberry mixture into the moulds, leaving enough space to drizzle a little cream on top of each.

Freeze until slushy, 60-90 minutes, then insert the sticks and freeze until solid, at least five hours or overnight.

TANGO BRAVO WHISKY (MAKES 12-15) Whisky, tangerine, basil, lemon In this tangerine dream, the basil brings out the sweet and tangy citrus flavours, and is a perfect match for the warm chocolate and vanilla notes from the whisky. Great on its own, but for kicks, dip it in a shot glass of whisky.  INGREDIENTS: 160ml water, 140g granulated sugar, 1tsp finely grated tangerine zest, 15g fresh, torn basil leaves, 700ml freshly squeezed tangerine juice (from about 15 tangerines), 3tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice, 3tbsp whisky, plus extra for dipping. For the garnish (optional), sliver of tangerine and a basil leaf for each.

 METHOD: Put the water, sugar, tangerine zest and basil leaves in a small saucepan and bring to a simmer. Remove from the heat and allow to cool. Strain the syrup through a sieve, squeezing the leaves with your fingers to extract all the precious basil juice. Mix the syrup with the tangerine and lemon juices, and the whisky. Pour the mixture into the moulds, leaving a little space at the top. If you like, drop in a sliver of tangerine and a basil leaf.

Freeze until slushy, 60-90 minutes, then insert the sticks and freeze until solid, at least five hours or overnight.

PIMM’S ON A STICK (MAKES 8-10) Pimm’s No. 1, mint, apple, orange, strawberries, cucumber, lemon Pimm’s is still going strong after nearly 200 years. The chopped garnishes mingled with the lemonade and submerged in Pimm’s are a true expression of an English summer garden party. Re-dip into Pimm’s as you go.  INGEDIENTS: 250ml water, 100g granulated sugar , 15g torn mint leaves, 150g sliced strawberries , 60g thinly sliced apple, 60g orange, peeled and thinly sliced, 60g thinly sliced cucumber, 60ml freshly squeezed lemon juice (from about 1-2 lemons), 120ml Pimm’s. For the garnish (optional), mint leaf for each.  METHOD: Put the water and half the sugar in a small saucepan and bring to the boil. Take off the heat, drop in the mint leaves and steep for an hour, or longer.

Meanwhile, put the strawberries, and apple, orange and cucumber slices in a bowl and stir in the rest of the sugar, the lemon juice and Pimm’s. Leave to macerate for 30 minutes or more.

Strain the syrup into the fruit and Pimm’s mixture, squeezing the mint leaves with your hands to extract their juices. Pour the mixture into the moulds, making sure you divide the fruit pieces evenly and leave a little space at the top. If you like, drop in a mint leaf.

Freeze until slushy, 60-90 minutes, then insert the sticks and freeze until solid, at least five hours or overnight.

ROASTED BANANA RUMSICLES (MAKES 8-10) Rum, banana, cream, lime You can laugh at the name, but these aren’t just for banana lovers.

Roasting the bananas intensifies the flavour and creates a melting texture and, of course, roasted bananas cry out for rum.  INGREDIENTS: 3 large, ripe bananas, 90g muscovado sugar, 175ml whole milk, 175ml double (heavy) cream, 1tbsp freshly squeezed lime juice, 1tsp vanilla extract, 90ml rum  METHOD: Preheat your oven to 200oC/Gas 6. Place the bananas whole on a baking sheet (do not peel them) and roast in the oven for about 20 minutes, until soft and their skins turn black. Remove and allow them to cool, then peel. Put the banana flesh in a food processor with all the other ingredients and whizz until smooth.

Pour the mixture into the moulds, leaving a little space at the top.

Freeze until slushy, 60-90 minutes, then insert the sticks and freeze until solid, at least five hours or overnight.

IN TUNBRIDGE WELLS Charlie Bond finds out how to hit your daily step quota in the royal town

A

ccording to the NHS, the average person walks between 3,000 and 4,000 steps per day, but the World Health Organization recommends we try and achieve 10,000 a day to increase our health benefits. For adults aged between 18 to 64, it’s suggested they achieve at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity throughout the week.

In recent years there’s been a huge spike in the sale of fitness trackers, as more people want to monitor their fitness levels and strive to hit their daily step targets. But, 10,000 steps in a day is actually harder than it sounds, especially if you spend eight or more hours in an office glued to your desk.

So, in a bid to hit my 10k, I set off on a jaunt around the town, armed with my FitBit to keep count of my steps. Here’s my guide to hitting your daily step goal around Tunbridge Wells…

TUNBRIDGE WELLS STATION TO ROSEMARY SHRAGER’S PATISSERIE Steps: 1,956 (there and back) If there’s one thing guaranteed to get you walking, it’s the promise of a naughty treat

when you reach your destination. At almost 1,000 steps each way, and only a 12 minute walk from the station, it’s an easy way to get in some steps and indulge your sweet tooth at the same time.

Got more time?

Get some extra steps in by walking down to the end of The Pantiles, or even visiting the Spa Valley Railway, which is 0.2 miles from the Grey Lady, and will add about another 450 steps each way.

SHOPPING IN ROYAL VICTORIA PLACE Steps: 1,189 I’m certainly an advocate of shopping as exercise, and studies have shown that in the UK, on average women burn 14,844 calories a year while shopping (which certainly justifies all the tea and cake breaks in between trying on shoes).

I’m probably not the only person who whiles away many a lunch break by window browsing in the Royal Victoria Place shopping centre, and I found that walking up one side and down the other on both floors reached 1,189 steps.

many steps you take inside shops too. I popped in to M&S to look for a greeting card and a sandwich (on different floors) and took an extra 368 steps.

WALKING TO DUNORLAN PARK Steps: 5,604 (there and back) As someone who drives to work, and often sits in the Pembury Road traffic, I’d assumed Dunorlan Park was much further to walk than it actually is. Starting from the Town Hall and walking along Crescent Road and then Calverley Park Gardens, I expected the walk to take me the best part of half an hour, when in fact it took me…13 minutes.

Definitely do-able in a lunch break, although the walk there is mostly uphill so on hotter days I’d recommend taking a slower pace.

Got more time? If you want to switch up your route then heading back into town via Sandrock Road and Camden Road will give you a similar step total (mine was 1,987 back to the Town Hall steps), but takes a bit longer (around 18 minutes). Plus, you can pop in to some shops on your way past and rack up a few more steps there, too.

WALKING AROUND DUNORLAN PARK Steps: 2,481 Following the regular path around Dunorlan (and narrowly avoiding an altercation with a goose) was not only a lovely walk, but also

quickly added on steps and increased my heart rate. There are lots of variations on the route, so you can take things at your own pace and add more steps or do less depending on your aims. I walked at a moderate pace and completed the route in around 27 minutes.

Got more time? By taking some additional routes within the park you can easily gain more steps. From the main path, walk up to the Grecian temple and back, and add extra 512 steps. Then, before you reach the bridge down near the children’s play area, take the path up to the Victoria Park Grove entrance.

Walking there and back is another 502 steps, so if you add both routes in to your walk you’ll achieve over 1,000 steps.

SHOPPING IN TUNBRIDGE WELLS HIGH STREET Steps: 1,182 It’s not difficult to spend several hours wandering up and down Tunbridge Wells High Street. If you’re just window shopping you can achieve just over 1,000 steps by walking down one side and back up the other, but by the time you’ve ‘popped in’ to a few boutiques, you can easily add a few hundred more to that total.

Got more time? Go down to the end of the High Street and visit Chapel Place, where you can enjoy a gin at the Gin Bar or cocktails at One Warwick Park. You’ll sneak in an extra 100 steps too.

TOTAL DAILY STEP COUNT: 12, 402 I was surprised how easy it was to rack up steps in a short amount of time. Clearly, I couldn’t do all of these routes every day or I’d never be at my desk, but each trip was fairly quick and easy to complete, so I’ll definitely be trying to up my step count by a little bit each day.

hich is your favourite?” I peer at the wine list in front of me, hoping to reach a conclusion but I can’t – they’re all delicious. “Perhaps you’d like to try the gin too?” I certainly would, thank you.

After all, when in California, as they probably say…

I’m in the midst of a somewhat full-on USA road trip.

What began as relaxing honeymoon plans have quickly become a heady mix of furtive excitement and sightseeing – from Las Vegas to San Francisco and then down the West Coast of California, we’ve certainly been packing it in – but now I’m looking for a little respite, and I think I’ve found it in SLO County.

Located halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles along California’s Central Coast, San Luis Obispo County boasts beautiful beaches, stunning scenery – and, due to its unique microclimates it’s also a wine maker’s paradise – which is how I’ve found myself sampling the drink delights at the Grey Wolf Cellars in Paso Robles.

Due to unusual weather conditions at the end of last year, the traditional Highway 1 route is closed south of Monterey County while urgent repairs are completed on Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge, but it’s easy enough to get to the area. We’ve taken the alternative route via Highway 101, which

conveniently brings us right into Wine Country and the tranquil rolling hills of Paso Robles.

From Grey Wolf, we visit another local winery – Ecluse – where owner Steve invites us to taste straight from the tank, and then we’re merrily (well one of us is, the other is driving) on our way to our stop for the night – Little Sur Inn which is located in Cambria.

Our room has a stunning outlook over the seafront, a warming fire for chilly evenings and is the perfect location to sit and watch the sun set over the ocean. Once the last slivers of light drop into the sea, we venture out to the town itself in search of dinner.

Cambria is a charming town, named one of the most beautiful in America by Forbes Magazine. We drive down to the village area for dinner and are met with an eclectic mix of boutiques, gift shops and restaurants, eventually finding ourselves in Las Cambritas, a Mexican eatery where we enjoy some amazing flavoursome dishes, including the delicious (but not diet friendly) avocado fritas. Happy and full, we return to our hotel and fall asleep to the sounds of the sea.

We awake to a cloudless morning, and set off for our first excursion of the day – a visit to Hearst Castle, which is set

Our fish and chips are long-forgotten, and we set out to find somewhere to dine for the evening. There are so many options, but in the end we choose The Flour House – an authentic Italian pizza restaurant where the pizzas are fresh, wood-fired and nothing short of amazing. There’s even the option of vegan cheese, and the drink menu proffers a strong selection of local wines. This is the kind of restaurant I’d love to have on my doorstep, but if they won’t make the move to Blighty then perhaps I’ll have to set my sights on relocating to SLO Town instead.

We’ve had a brilliant, but busy day, so it’s time to unwind – and there’s no better way than hiring a hot tub at Sycamore Springs and spending an hour relaxing under the stars.

Nestled within the Avila Valley, the treecanopied hillside plays host to 23 open-air mineral spring hot tubs, each secluded and peaceful, with just the sound of the birds and the breeze. When our hour is up it’s almost impossible to peel ourselves from the cocoon of the warm water and to our hotel.

Thanks to a combination of sea air, soothing spring water and the softest super king bed at the Seacrest Hotel at Pismo Beach, I have the most restful night’s sleep. But, it’s almost bittersweet, because when I wake up I know our time in San Luis Obispo is soon to come to an end. However, there’s still time for one last attempt to take things slow, so we head down the steps directly from the hotel and sink our toes into the sand on the beach below.

Eventually though, it really is time to climb back into the car and continue on our American adventure. Just two days in SLO County has felt like a lifetime, but there’s so much still to explore. If I really can’t bottle it and take it home in my suitcase then perhaps I’ll just have to return, and next time for much, much, longer…

SYCAMORE MINERAL SPRINGS

at an altitude of 1,600 feet and offers unparalleled views across the surrounding Californian scenery. I instantly fall in love with this Mediterranean-inspired architectural masterpiece, and teamed with the fascinating guided tour, this is a real SLO County gem worth spending a few hours visiting.

Once back at ground level, we drive along to the Elephant Seal Vista Point at San Simeon, where hundreds of the creatures lie basking in the sunshine and playing in the sea. We learn that amazingly, the seals spend eight to ten months a year in the open ocean, before migrating thousands of miles for birthing, breeding and to rest. It certainly puts our road trip into perspective!

Lunch is at 60 State Park restaurant in Morro Bay – around a 45 minute drive from San Simeon along Highway 1, and is in an idyllic setting overlooking the bay and the park. The menu is filled with fresh, seasonal ingredients, and we both tuck in to beer battered halibut with chips, which I can safely say gives our British fish and chips a run for their money.

We follow lunch with a stroll around Morro Bay waterfront, where we duck into quaint seaside shops, watch boats setting sail, and breathe in the fresh sea air. It’s a wonderful place to while away the hours, and with plenty of water sport and boat excursions available, there’s certainly plenty to see and do.

As the afternoon draws to a close, we continue our road trip adventure by making our way to San Luis Obispo city itself (or SLO Town as it’s affectionately known), and exploring what it has to offer. It’s early evening and the streets are buzzing – the sun may be setting but here, things are just beginning to heat up. As stylish boutiques in downtown close their doors, restaurants with al fresco patios and bars bedecked with

ART THERAPY

Students from Sevenoaks School have been taking art therapy sessions with patients at The Hospice in the Weald. The 15 students are participating in the Art Project run by the Voluntary Service Unit (VSU). As part of this, a number of students travel to the Hospice every week to spend time with the patients and enjoy engaging in creative activities together – as part of their International Baccalaureate studies. Every session covers a different activity and the

students have been making clay vegetables, creating prints and experimenting with glazing.

Emma Delpech, Art teacher at Sevenoaks School, who runs the VSU project says: “Creativity is a great source of wellbeing; providing all those involved in or observing the activity with a space of meditation and purpose… the students who visit Hospice in the Weald on a Thursday afternoon benefit from this activity as much as the patients

RUGBY RECRUITMENT

Cranbrook School are tapping into some All Black magic to boost their chances on the rugby field next season.

The school have secured the services of former New Zealand forward Hika Reid as rugby coach and Tom Hillier, a former Wasps player, parent and Old Boy of Cranbrook School, to work alongside the 59-year-old All Black.

A Cobham Hall student has continued the school’s successful tradition of appearing in the Royal Academy A-level Summer Exhibition Online. With a theme of ‘Here, There and Everywhere’, Year 13 pupil Evie Fisher’s winning piece was one of a series of three.

“I was thrilled when I heard my piece had been selected,” she says. “It’s so exciting that my work will be displayed in this exhibition. The piece continued my investigation of light and identity. I returned to look at my home as there was interesting light entering through large windows. Eager to create atmosphere using light, I used oil paint which dries slowly, allowing me to layer colours creating the desired glow”.

“My main focus, with the help of Tom, is to establish a positive rugby culture at Cranbrook School,” says Hika. “By placing a strong emphasis on player development we will endeavour to help each player realise their potential in understanding their positionspecific duties and roles. We will also be introducing an array of skills for them to adopt, personalise and express out on the pitch.”

omeone who’s passionate about the charity and the work it does is Harry Collins from G Collins and Sons in Tunbridge Wells. The Queen’s jeweller has been involved with the DofE for over 15 years, having previously held the position of International Honorable Chairman, and is now committed to making a difference in the local area.

“It’s just a great charity, which I’m really thrilled to be involved with,” he says. “There are lots of great charities and it can be hard for people to choose what’s best to support, but this one covers the problems we have at the moment with youngsters. What we do is massive in terms of changing kids’ lives and sending them in another direction.”

THE AWARD If you’re not familiar with the award, it’s a three-part scheme, available to any young person aged between 14-24 years of age. It begins at bronze level which takes six months to complete, silver takes place over 12 months and the gold award takes 18 months to undertake. Each is made up of sections, including volunteering, physical, skill and the expedition.

“What we do is cool,” says Harry. “Kids can just be in jeans and a t-shirt and be themselves. We’re the biggest youth organisation in the world, and the aim is to hit every school around the world and give them the opportunity to join. Not everybody knows what teamwork is, but when you’re

dangling from a rope halfway up a mountain, you soon learn how important your team is!”

HELP FOR ALL A record 49,453 of new recruits in the last year were young people identified as being disadvantaged, at risk or marginalised.

“When I went to school we didn’t have this, but now you would,” explains Harry.

“Lots of the kids I went to school with went wrong, because their peer group was wrong – they never had anyone praising them. This does that sort of thing, which is really important. People also assume that because it’s a royal charity that it’s a scheme for rich kids, but it’s not – we’re involved with prisons, we’re taking youngsters out of an environment where it’s all bad news, and giving them something completely different that they’ve never done before, where they achieve, understand what teamwork is through working together.”

The numbers speak for themselves – the DofE has been helping young offenders at Feltham, and almost half who signed up for the scheme achieved their bronze award, while in South Africa, the re-offend rate of young

But, as Harry explains, the wealthier children can also benefit from all the award offers.

“The DofE has an impact on all young people, rich and poor. Children from wealthy families can go off the rails just as easily. Often they’re targeted by drug dealers because they have money and this can set them off down a destructive path. We see this a lot with wealthy families, but if we can get a hold of these kids at the right age, rich or poor, we can give them something they’ve never had. It’s really important to get kids off the street – ‘out of gangs and into teams’ is my saying.”

EMPLOYABILITY Over 100 top UK employers, including the likes of Google, ITV and Heathrow have endorsed a DofE Award as a recognisable mark of a young person’s transferrable soft skills, and many universities see the DofE as especially valuable due to the dedication applied by potential students.

“The DofE makes such a strong case on a CV because it’s about someone who’s willing to go through things and see things through to the end,” says Harry. “It’s particularly good if kids aren’t academic, this gives them another avenue completely where they can succeed and do well. If I was interviewing two people, and one person had done their Gold Award DofE and the other person’s done nothing, I’d take the one who has.”

GET INVOLVED Of course, it’s not just young people who can be involved in DofE. The charity is always looking for volunteers to help out in a variety of different ways so they can continue their work across the world. And, businesses can be a part of making a difference too.

“We always want volunteers, we’ve never got enough,” says Harry. “I’d like the alumni, the kids who have already done it, grown up and got good positions in their life – I want them to contact me more than ever, because we could get them to help us even more.

They’ve been there and done it, and it gives them the opportunity to do something for us.

They now might be a director of some big company who can put us on their charity list, or if they haven’t got money they can do volunteer work.”

More than two-fifths (43%) of people now think home services, such as cleaners, gardeners and dog walkers are a necessity.

Those who use these services are spending £109 on them on average every month, totalling £1,308 over a year, according to research from cashback shopping website TopCashback.co.uk.

The most popular services include hiring a cleaner, gardener or handyman to help around the house, the survey found, with some consumers also investing in smart tech, including robotic vacuum cleaners and voice recognition gadgets.

CASH CRUNCH

The age of 35 is the financial “crunch point” – the peak age at which people are most likely to be juggling the costs of young children with mortgages and loan repayments for cars, holidays and weddings, according to analysis.

Price comparison website

MoneySuperMarket analysed 2.7million credit card and loan enquires on its smart search eligibility tool to build a picture of the nation’s key borrowing milestones.

Dan Plant, editor-in-chief at MoneySuperMarket, says: “While it’s clear that people reach a ‘financial crunch’ point at 35, no matter how old you are, it’s always wise to plan ahead and choose your products carefully before you borrow, to make sure you can afford the repayments.”

FUTURE FINANCES

Around 40% of parents-to-be are saving for their child’s education before they are born, a survey has found.

Expectant parents anticipate that they will have put aside £1,204 in savings by the time their child turns one year old, saving an average of £904 before their baby arrives, comparethemarket.com found.

Simon McCulloch, director of insurance at comparethemarket.com, says: “It’s a

good idea to put aside what you can before your baby is born and before the cost of childcare, nappies and baby clothes start to kick in.”

A quarter of holidaymakers who rely on their credit or debit cards while travelling abroad have had their plastic blocked during their trip, research has found.

Some 26% of people who had used their card while travelling abroad said they had experienced it being blocked by their provider - despite nearly two-thirds (61%) of them saying they had notified their bank that they were going on holiday – uSwitch.com found.

Richard Koch, head of policy at the UK Cards Association, says: “Card companies take security extremely seriously and constantly monitor for unusual spending activity, which can include overseas transactions, in order to protect customers from fraud.”

How important is networking?

I believe that networking is vital for all businesses in 2017. It gives us a chance to get to know someone before doing business with them. It connects us with other people and their networks.

What are the common things that put people off networking?

Uncertainty, not knowing what to expect,

a lack of confidence and sometimes having the wrong impression that it’s very formal and only for people in certain industries.

What are the first things you should do if you’re at an event where you don’t know anyone?

Find and introduce yourself to the meeting host. Ask them about the meeting (format, what’s expected of you, who will be attending etc. if you don’t already know this).

Ask them to introduce you to someone.

Create rapport (the weather is always a good conversation starter, or ask about someone’s journey).

How can you deal with a fear of speaking in public?

If you need help there are public speaking coaches who will give you feedback about specific areas and work with you to prepare so you feel more confident.

Are there mistakes people make when trying to network? How can they be avoided?

The most common mistake people make is to talk too much about themselves when it’s better to ask questions of the other person.

A networking meeting is the opportunity to find out a little about the other person so you can then go on to a further meeting when you can see whether you could work together.

People forget to bring business cards and do any preparation before the meeting.

I recommend the following: ■ Check with the organizer that the meeting is still going ahead and what the format will be, what is expected of you, whether there’s a ‘one minute’ introduction etc.

■ Have business cards with your contact details on including your name, phone

number and email address (it still surprises me that people miss some of these details).

■ Allow enough time to get there slightly early to ensure you are not stressed when you arrive.

■ Have an outline of what you are going to say in bullet points.

■ Make eye contact when doing your one minute talk and don’t just read from your notes.

LinkedIn is the first place to start.

I describe it as a ‘loose’ network where you don’t have to be very active and you can find people when you need to.

I also find Facebook groups good for keeping in touch between meetings.

Most business networking groups have a Facebook group. Check the rules for each for what you can post and on what days.

Can you give any simple advice for someone starting up a business but has never really networked before?

Networking is not just about getting new clients. It’s a place to make friends, get support and help, try out new business ideas, find potential collaborators and much more.

Try several different groups to find the ones that work for you.

One important point is to remember that you need to go networking regularly so that people get to know you and they understand and remember what you do.

Networking is not about selling, it’s about attracting people to you (that both in person and online) It’s also about the ‘long game’ as most business only comes once you ‘meet, like, know and learn to trust’ the other person.

HURACAN SEASON

Lamborghini has given its Huracan super sports car a makeover, with trick active aerodynamics and even more performance. Darren Cassey took to road and track to find out how its character has changed

WHAT’S NEW

LOOKS AND IMAGE

SPACE AND PRACTICALITY

The Performante is based on the already super-quick Huracan supercar, but in order to make it capable of astonishing lap times – it recently broke the production car record at Nurburgring in Germany – the Raging Bull brand has gone to town.

As is often the case with such machines, there’s been plenty of weight saving. The Performante is down 40kg on the standard car, with the redesigned exhaust system contributing a large chunk of that.

However, the real headline is Lamborghini’s next-level active aerodynamic package. Dubbed ALA - Aerodinamica Lamborghini Attive – it manipulates the air flowing over, under and through the car to stick it to the road. In high speed corners you can genuinely feel it at work.

The standard Huracan is no shrinking violet, but beside the Performante it almost looks subdued. Even standing still, it looks ready to race. The prominent rear wing perched behind the engine hatch, the pointed front nose with its chunky front splitter and the angular cab-forward design combine to give the impression it’s ready to pounce.

Inside, the VW Group influence is immediately apparent. The switchgear feels solid and even the more intricate hexagonal flourishes have clearly been built to last. This car has not been put together with comfort in mind, but the standard seats are supportive without being so solid your back will throw in the towel on a long trip.

In its role as a track-focused supercar, the Huracan Performante gives little regard to space and practicality – almost everything that doesn’t contribute to the act of going quickly is removed.

However, in defence of this 21st century engineering marvel, it’s not as impractical as you might think.

Lift the bonnet and there’s the same 100-litre ‘frunk’ that’s in the garden variety Huracan, which will fit a few shopping bags or luggage for a weekend away.

Meanwhile, the cabin’s excellent ergonomics mean the balance between feeling snugly enclosed in a race car doesn’t come at the expense of adjustability.

The driving position is excellent and the reach and rake adjustments on the steering wheel make it easy to get comfortable.

BEHIND THE WHEEL We tested the car at the famous Imola circuit in Italy before taking it out in to the hills surrounding the circuit.

On track, the Huracan Performante feels at home, especially at such a high-speed circuit where the aero work can really be appreciated – in quick curves you can sense the car is being pushed into the road by the air it’s punching a hole through, rewarding commitment with near-endless grip.

When cornering, the active aerodynamics are altered so that there’s high downforce over the wheels inside the corner and low downforce on the outside to improve turn-in. It can also increase downforce under braking to help slow the car, and reduce it when accelerating on the straight to improve top speed. The car’s brain is constantly making calculations and adjustments – it’s quite remarkable.

Despite the race car-like looks and violent performance, it’s surprisingly forgiving on road and track and has the ability to make you look like a hero behind the wheel. And yet it still takes concentration to get the most out of it.

When you finally reach the upper echelons of its performance, it’s a genuinely emotional experience.

VALUE FOR MONEY It’s hard to consider any car that costs in excess of £200,000 being good value for money, especially when a Porsche 911 GT3 costs nearly £100,000 less and is utterly brilliant. But if you’re able to put such a vast sum of money down on a car, value almost becomes irrelevant – and you honestly can’t put a price on the way the Performante makes you feel.

So, what do you get for your money? Inside, there’s plenty of soft Alcantara and racey bucket seats as standard, though

‘comfort’ seats can be used instead. The digital instrument binnacle is a delight, switching the information it shows depending on which drive mode you’re in, and incorporating the satnav seamlessly.

For those who really want to splash the cash, the company’s Ad Personum personalisation programme allows near-infinite customisation.

WHO WOULD BUY ONE? Wealthy car enthusiasts will naturally be drawn to the Performante thanks to its 10-cylinder, naturally aspirated engine and frankly astonishing aerodynamic technology.

Lamborghini says that because the car represents such a huge step for the market segment, it has seen a lot of customers that have traditionally bought from the company’s rivals putting down deposits.

CHANGING PERCEPTIONS Dave Samuels takes a fresh look at Lexus

L

exus has taken a quantum leap in launching its all-new LC luxury coupe.

With its eye-catching low-slung supercar styling, distinctive lights and highlights, and the option of a thunderous V8 engine or quick yet frugal hybrid powertrain, this newcomer is designed to make car fans think again about Lexus – luxury arm to world number one carmaker, Toyota.

It could be as pivotal as the LS400, the legendary model that launched Lexus in the UK in 1990 and was famously advertised as the luxury car that could balance champagne glasses on its bonnet while the engine was running.

Nobody will be doing that on the LC’s swooping bonnet line, but anyone connected with Lexus may well toast the car in bubbly as they witness its ‘halo effect’ on the rest of the marque’s line-up.

Lexus has always prospered on quality, reliability,

customer service and value – its cars are always well specified as standard compared to key rivals.

But a chic and desirable image never quite stuck, despite efforts such as its current RC Coupe, performance saloons – such as the current GS F (0-62mph in 4.2 seconds) – and the hand-built LFA supercar (2010-2012).

The racetrack tuned LFA was one of the most expensive road cars ever from a Japanese carmaker – it cost around £350,000 at the time – but buyers of the new LC can have much of that glamour, appeal and driver experience for less than a quarter of that cost (from £76,595) as the new LC is built in Japan at the LFA’s Motomachi plant; more hightech race car workshop than traditional car plant.

This has allowed ground-breaking production techniques, such as the hi-tech bonding of aluminium parts to high-strength steel to keep the car light yet taut,

complementing the balance and handling of the LC’s driver pleasing rear-wheel drive layout.

The powertrains are also innovative, with the likely best seller being the LC 500h – upholding a proud tradition of petrol-electric Lexus – and the marque’s first to have a ‘Multi Stage Hybrid System’ designed to boost performance across the power range, deliver more direct response to driver inputs and enhance driving pleasure.

This powertrain comprises a 299PS (295bhp) 3.5-litre V6 multi-stage hybrid engine and advanced 179PS (176.5bhp) electric motor.

And while the 477PS (470bhp) 5.0-litre V8 LC 500 can echo the raucous appeal of big-engine rivals like the Porsche Boxster/Cayman and 911, Jaguar F-Type and Audi RS5, Lexus says it delivers smooth acceleration via its direct shift 10-speed auto gearbox.

I

f you’re rocking a seventies vibe by piling on the pot plants for an outdoor/ indoor theme, working a boho vibe with a high-back rattan peacock chair, or keeping it simple with eco-friendly paredback kitchen designs, then you’re ahead of the decor game.

Those are the fashion-forward trends identified by Pinterest, the social media site where millions find inspiration for their homes, and which has recently revealed its new Best of Pinterest UK Interior Awards, whose judges included designers Matthew Williamson and Kelly Hoppen.

“Pinterest is the ideal tool for

creatives,” says Hoppen. “I only wish this inspirational and informative platform was around when I first started in design 40 years ago. It’s so interesting to be able to look at the trends and styles of people worldwide and how each individual, culture or country interpret those.”

and even DIY to personalise their living spaces.”

Here are the key trends that emerged from the awards...

DREAMY & DIY Sustainable home decorating is on the rise, with Britons growing more confident about DIY and making the most of inexpensive materials and discovering plywood kitchens (which recorded 182% more saves than last year). Homes are no longer running with one colour scheme, with printed wallpaper recording 250% more saves than last year and navy bedrooms up 182%.

BRING OUTDOORS IN

IT’S ALL ABOUT SHAPES & SIZES Maths may not be your strong point but featuring geometric shapes is essential if you want your home style to add up, according to Pinterest.

Hexagons featured 93% more than last year, with herringbone tiles running a close second, and circular mirrors third.

Houseplants – the hip decorating statement of style from the late Sixties and early seventies – are back in vogue and create a lush outdoor/ indoor vibe. They’re particularly popular for living rooms and for conjuring an exotic, steamy atmosphere in a bathroom, especially hanging plants in a shower (up 302% on last year). Houseplants are in tune with our current passion for embracing nature and its colour palette – green is leading the colour chart this year and Pinterest research showed it’s a favourite for tiles.

TURN BACK THE CLOCK Vibrant colour choices are also inspired by the seventies – think mustard, orange, greens and even splashes of red.

HOME FAKEOVERS

They bring interest and character and help shake up spaces dominated by neutrals.

According to the research, there’s also a revival for shag pile rugs, record players and that boho retro piece, a peacock chair.

If you’re on the move – a renter rather than an owner – you need savvy, temporary solutions to smarten a space. Reusable wallpaper (up 344% on last year) is a home decor hero and can stun as a statement on one wall, glam up a chest of drawers, and is becoming a firm favourite for children’s rooms.

Bulky wardrobes eat space but simple clothing racks, rails or ladder storage are slimmer, and your favourite clothes can become an eye-catching display.

Turn on the style cheaply by jazzing up a room with new legs for a sofa or handles for cupboards, and use vintage trunks and baskets for storage.

INTERIOR LUST-HAVES Some pieces just hit the right decor sweet spot and the outright winner of the Pinterest Lust-have award was a Loaf Thankster sofa, from £1,195 with the runner-up an Oliver Bonas Luxe Round Bamboo Drinks Trolley, with marble top, £395. A Penn desk, £399, with matching wall shelves, £99, from Made.com won the best workspace idea award. A lightfilled space with Velux windows was chosen by Pinterest users in Glasgow as one of the regional winners of the awards.

Tell us first about the company.

How did it start?

Mark Wilkinson Furniture was founded in 1981 with Mark’s first iconic fitted kitchen commission inspired and became the model for the ‘English country style’ using the finest reclaimed timber. What had been in the past an unseen area of utility became an inspiring and stylish place to prepare food in. This was effectively the start of the kitchen development as the centre of the modern family lifestyle and Mark Wilkinson has been responsible for bringing the fitted kitchen into the highest echelon of luxury living today.

The craft element to your business is strong. Can you tell us about that?

The Mark Wilkinson handcrafted elements are our heritage and we do not churn out large numbers of factory-line furniture. Each Mark Wilkinson bespoke piece is handcrafted at our Wiltshire workshop with meticulous attention to quality and detail and from the finest timbers and materials - we create Furniture Alchemy. Each piece is hand carved and constructed ensuring an exquisite artisanal finish and most importantly sustainable too.

How does kitchen design work – where do you start when planning a project?

Clients will often visit our showrooms with Pinterest, mood boards and other inspirational imagery. They are also often influenced by their friend’s kitchen, brand advertising and have an image in mind. It is then our job to really drill down to produce a full brief, design and industry leading CGI’s.

There are three main criteria we generally see with projects: Rip out and replace, major refits and new build.

Garden design ideas

SPRUCING

Our gardening expert Victoria Truman has these tips for getting a gorgeous garden this July 1. Cut back lupins and delphiniums that have finished flowering to encourage a second flush later in the season.

6. Cut wild flower meadows to 8cm after they have seeded; remove clippings to keep fertility low.

2. Continue to deadhead the flower border on a regular basis as this will also encourage more flowers later on. Don’t forget to feed all the flower borders and containers every two weeks and water well in dry weather. Containers may need watering as much as twice a day in very hot weather.

7. Divide crowded groups of bearded iris once they have finished flowering.

3. Keep up with the weeding otherwise the weeds will take moisture and nutrients meant for your flowers.

4. Keep mowing regularly unless there is a drought. Set the mower blade slightly higher than before so that if it becomes very hot the grass will not dry out so much.

5. Only water any recently sown grass or new turf. If an existing lawn does go brown it will recover after the first rains.

8. Don’t deadhead roses that produce hips as these will be a valuable food source later on in the season.

9. Collect ripe seed from forget-me-nots and foxgloves and sow in pots or scatter in shady areas.

10. Use leftover tea and coffee grounds to acidify the soil of acid-loving plants such as azaleas, rhododendrons, camellias, gardenias and even blueberries. A light sprinkling of about one-quarter of an inch applied once a month will keep the pH of the soil on the acidic side.

Concentrating on making the most of your outdoor space which can increase your square footage by creating a social family outdoor area bringing the living room, dining room and kitchen outside, where you can eat, drink and entertain friends.

Clients are asking for a more distinctive outside room designed garden to allow for more useable space throughout the year – outdoor kitchens, fire pits, dining and sofa sets are top of most clients wish-lists. Landscape lighting is an effective way of prolonging your time outside especially in the autumn months, outside lighting can create the right ambience around these outdoor seating areas, using a combination of uprights as well as lights installed on outdoor structures to illuminate the area effectively. Pin spotlights in and amongst the planting areas can add interest and drama.

These well thought out areas are seen as an investment, a bit like adding a ground floor extension to your house.

Sculptures

You can’t place a sculpture anywhere – it needs to evoke a feeling or emotion of belief when placed.

Simple, large contemporary forms work well whether it be a series of large pots or large topiary shapes, and sets up a contrast with informal planting. Using repetitive forms is one of the simplest tricks to make a garden feel harmonious.

The best shapes are simple and big, complemented by planting. Hedging and topiary can achieve a similar effect.
