If you have children and you’ve exhausted every toy and game you can think of to keep them occupied, check out our calendar on page 20 to find lots of familyfriendly events taking place over the next few weeks. Celebrity fashion campaigns always cause a stir (and a frantic shopping spree – remember Kate Moss for Topshop?!) And I think we’ll be seeing a lot of the new Versace Versus pieces, designed by singer Zayn Malik around this A/W17. This month’s cover star is the very cool Bella Hadid, who’s modelling for Zayn’s

F
ormer Tonbridge and Malling MP Sir John Stanley presented a hand-woven replica section of the Bayeux Tapestry entitled ‘Embarquement’ to Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council at Tonbridge Castle last month. The tapestry shows horsemen and foot soldiers embarking on a ship bound for the invasion of England by William the Conqueror in 1066. Sir John Stanley was accompanied by his wife Lady Elizabeth Stanley for the presentation ceremony, which also had an important educational dimension. presentation, with their teachers, as part of a school history project. “I am presenting ‘Embarquement’ to the Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council in appreciation of the Council’s outstanding work over a great many years in restoring Tonbridge Castle’s gatehouse and then the great hall,” Sir John Stanley said. “Without the council’s vision and determination, Tonbridge Castle would have remained just a ruin as it was when I first became Tonbridge and Malling’s MP in 1974. Tonbridge Castle is now one of the great historic castles in Britain for children and adults

I hope that ‘Embarquement’ will add to their interest and enjoyment for many years to come.” Mayor of Tonbridge and Malling, Cllr Roger Dalton, who was also in attendance says: “I am delighted to accept this beautifully hand-woven replica of a section of the famous Bayeux Tapestry, which will hang in pride of place in the Great Hall at Tonbridge Castle. We are very grateful to Sir John Stanley for presenting the council with such a lovely memento of a key moment in British history and I’m sure it will be greatly admired by visitors to the castle for many years.”

Where do you live? Tonbridge. How long have you lived there and what made you decide to move there? We moved over from Sevenoaks four years ago – you get so much more for your money along with great schools and trains into London.
The best place to get a cup of coffee? If I didn’t say 65mm coffee in The Old Fire Station I would get told off by David and Jade who run the company especially after their top 36 coffee shop award in Europe recently but I also enjoy visiting Beyond the Grounds by the river as the staff are great!
What’s your favourite shop locally? The best local independent would have to be The Gift Box which is perfect for a last minute gift!
Where do you take people when they come to visit? Mostly the park which has a good playground for our kids and the 1,000 year old castle and the grounds which personally I feel is an under-used attraction in the town.
Where’s the best place to go for a Sunday stroll? The river walk is lovely in Tonbridge around the castle grounds.
What’s the night life like where you live? When you have a young family it’s more about eating out. Tonbridge is changing, with places such as Havet, The Old Fire
If you’re looking to relax and unwind, where’s your favourite place to go? To relax and unwind would be fantastic… but weekends are spent working and time with family. Where’s the best place to meet friends and socialise? Running a busy venue such as The Old Fire Station and hosting Michelin chefs, it’s the first place most of our friends want to come and visit. What do you do when you spend a weekend or day off in the local area? Take the kids swimming as Tonbridge also has an outdoor pool and they love the model railway that runs at weekends near the park. Why do you love where you live? Tonbridge has more of a community feel than other towns and with lots of new developments. The demographics of the locals are becoming younger, and it’s a really nice place to bring up a family. www.tofstn.com

fter a break from the normal format in 2016, I am delighted to announce The Local & Live Music Festival is returning to the beautiful Calverley Grounds this August with an extended programme, in addition to an open air stage in the idyllic grounds of The Spa Hotel on the Bank Holiday Monday. The Forum will be hosting after show parties all weekend and there will be several pubs putting on plenty of live music under the umbrella of the festival including The Bedford, Cassidy’s, The Royal Oak with more to be confirmed. In Calverley Grounds, Local & Live is teaming up with numerous renowned local food and drink traders to provide a varied selection of quality concessions including beer tents from Fuggles and the Ragged Trousers, ‘Food Comes First’ traditional barbecue, paella, Pimms and bubbles from Sankeys, Alice’s Ices, Indian cuisine from the Raj Pavilion, organic vegan offerings
Orange Circus, David Migden & The Twisted Roots, Sarah Tonin, Steffan James and headliners HARLEY & WOODS. The grounds of the Spa Hotel will be the main focus on the Bank Holiday Monday with no stages running in Calverley Grounds. With music starting at 1pm crowds can enjoy live sets from the likes of local acoustic-style acts including Abi Hudson, Jack Burns, Alex Beharrell, Hannah Richards, Chasing Shadows, Alana Hazzard and many more. Renowned local songstress Phoebe Katis will be headlining at around 7pm. The Spa Hotel will be providing various food and drink concessions onsite. Don’t forget, Local & Live will be running free evening shows at The Forum on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 9pm until 1am. I would like to express my deepest thanks to TWBC and Tunbridge Wells Together who are both supporting the festival with grants of £2,000 and £1,000 respectively. Coupled with generous support from local businesses and individuals, this collective financial help has enabled Local & Live to return to its much loved home of Calverley Grounds and a similar format to the 2015 and 2014 events. WEDDING BELLS IN TUNBRIDGE WELLS Next month, The Wedding Singer comes to The Assembly Hall Theatre. Lorna Johnson caught up with the show’s associate director Cydney Uffindell-Phillips to find out more about the show that’s set to take Tunbridge Wells by storm… Tell us a little bit about what audiences can expect from The Wedding Singer The Wedding Singer is a funny feel-good musical. There is some music taken from the original movie but the majority was newly written for the piece. If you've seen the film you'll have a good idea of what might be in store. What are you most looking forward to about coming to Tunbridge Wells with the show? It's always lovely getting to work in Tunbridge Wells. I used to perform in the local venues when I was growing up so it is really great when you get to revisit with a production professionally. It’s also a great opportunity for family and friends to come and see the show when they might not manage to make it to venues further afield. How has the retro vibe of the musical allowed you to strut your stuff as associate director? Well I was born in the eighties and I love retro and vintage stuff so it was a great era to research. The creative team have done a fantastic job of integrating the eighties vibe into our production while maintaining a modern quality.
How do you feel the performances have been going so far? It's always a challenge when you’re touring weekly from venue to venue as the show has to adapt to all the various stage dimensions, etc. The team have been fantastic, and the show has been very well received. I always enjoy seeing reactions from within the audiences on tour, especially with a comedy like The Wedding Singer. Touring gives you the opportunity to reach a diverse audience which is fantastic. What is it really like behind the curtains on show night? Well there is a hive of activity! There is as much action going on backstage behind the scenes as there is on stage! What’s the most rewarding part of being so involved with this production? I have loved working on a comedy. Comedy has always been a huge passion of mine and I have done a lot of choreography for comedy so it was fantastic getting to contribute in a directorial capacity!

THEATRE How does this tour compare to the other shows you have been involved with? My involvement in this tour is very different from other shows I have worked on. I have been a performer for years, as well as often working within the creative teams, and I am used to working permanently on a production. I only visit The Wedding Singer every couple of weeks. You develop a different relationship with a show when you have a bit of time in between visits. It allows you to see things with fresh eyes which I think can be really useful. Tell us about your path toward such an interesting and creative vocation – how did you get involved in directing musicals? I have been working as a performer and a choreographer for the majority of my career. I have always been really passionate about storytelling and I love it when there is story behind choreography. I have worked with some really inspiring creatives during my career and have been very lucky to work within their development processes to create new work. A few years ago I was speaking to a director about a project I wanted to develop and he said it sounded like I wanted to direct it. Until then I don't think it had crossed my mind that I wanted to be a director, but I have now realised I quite clearly always had a passion for it. I used to write down ideas for film and theatre projects when I was at school and always had a clear vision of what I wanted to create. The ideas never developed because my time was primarily focused on performing growing up, but I now realise the passion
was always there. I am really pleased it has happened this way, as it has followed a really natural progression, and I have been able to learn so much from my work in other capacities, which now supports me as a irector. As a former TWIGGS school girl, were you involved with anything locally that inspired you to pursue your career? Yes, definitely. My mum, Zoe Uffindell, ran a dance school in Tunbridge Wells called Arts Umbrella and I was regularly involved with performances at Trinity, the Assembly Hall Theatre and the Stag Theatre. A number of us from the dance school also performed with The National Youth Ballet and London Children's Ballet as well as being involved in professional productions in London. I have fond memories of playing Gretl in The Sound of Music when I was six which gave me a taste for working in musical theatre at a young age. It was always really inspiring to see other local kids working in the arts too as it made it feel like a possibility as a profession.

This structure is then often used to label you and pigeonhole you based on where you trained, who your agent is…this can be really restrictive in terms of what people will consider you for. I believe there needs to be a major shift in how talent is identified to make the arts more accessible and therefore increase diversity in the industry. I have got the majority of my work through recommendation, and the wonderful thing about working this way is people have a sense of your potential and what you could do, rather than only having a reference of what you have done on a CV. Similarly to
how LinkedIn functions, Dokimi enables talent in the arts to have their recommendations visible on their profile. Recommendations become much more powerful on Dokimi as they can be seen beyond your own network, plus getting valued for specific skills and expertise can really help to open up new opportunities and therefore help talent to break away from their pigeonhole. What do you love most about your professional life? I love the variety of my professional life. I get to meet and work with so many different types of people, and I love how every project opens up a new area of investigation so I am always learning. Getting the opportunity to be creatively curious for a living is amazing!
You have also dedicated a lot of time in developing a programme to support new and existing talent in the arts. Tell us more about that. Yes, I have created a new online platform that introduces a new way to identify talent called Dokimi. It is a word of mouth network that revolves around professional recommendations. The arts is a really difficult area to break into professionally. There is a structure for performers for example, that involves getting professional training, getting an agent, getting

Revel in a rare piece on American history. “Nations May rise and fall, but an idea lives on”, and in this case, lives on in the form of a Cartier wristwatch. Once belonging to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, a new world record for a Cartier Tank was broken when it sold for $379,500 (approximately £300,000) at the Christie’s Rare Watches and American Icons auction in New York. It was estimated to sell for between $60,000 and $120,000 (£47,000 - £95,000); the fact that it tripled the higher prediction reflects its illustrious provenance. hoosing a summer party dress can be a pretty daunting task, especially when there are so many different styles out there for us to choose from. After all, dressing for the summer should be pretty easy: Sandals? Dress? Done! So, if you’re struggling to make the right decision on what to buy, here are my top tips to make that shopping experience that much more enjoyable. We tend to embrace summer with a crazed frenzy of floral prints and bright colours, which ticks so many boxes for our wardrobes (1). However, black can work just as wonderfully on a summer evening. So if you love the idea then look for a perfect summer evening little black dress option and wear it with confidence! (2) When it comes to material, think about opting for natural fabrics such as cotton, linen or bamboo for lightness. They are also better in terms of not showing any perspiration on those really hot days. For a summer BBQ party, halterneck dresses and shirt dresses are perfect for a no-fuss, easy option. Go for fun colours or prints and team with a gladiator
sandal or cute espadrilles to complete the look. (3) If your summer party is happening straight after a day at work, then a maxi dress is a great way to bring you from office to the cocktail venue with just a quick change of shoes and added layers of accessories. Stretch marks are caused by rapid stretching of the skin, which can be caused by sudden weight gain or pregnancy. The most commonly affected areas are the stomach, arms, breasts, thighs and buttock areas. Genetics and skin type can also play an active part. So how can you prevent stretch marks in pregnancy? Studies show that by using a skin oil or cream twice a day during your pregnancy can help to keep the skin hydrated and remain supple helping it to stretch without causing damage. Please note that creams and oils containing mineral oils are unsafe during pregnancy. What treatments can improve stretch marks? Diet and creams – although a good diet won’t affect the appearance of stretch marks, eating healthy and exercising regularly will keep your weight in check and prevent more from appearing. Rapid weight gain is the highest contributing factor in the appearance of stretch marks. DERMAL ROLLER – is a treatment where a roller with fine needles is rolled over the affected area repeatedly traumatising the skin and encouraging new cell renewal. ccording to England’s Chief Medical Officer, cancer patients should be routinely offered DNA tests to help select the best treatments for their cancer. Professor Dame Sally Davies emphasised that the NHS must deliver her genomic tests within five years. What is the difference between ‘genetic’ testing and ‘genomic testing’ of breast cancer?
While genetic and genomic may sound similar, they focus on different information. A genetics test can help to tell you the future risk for getting cancer, while a genomics test can help those patients who already have the diagnosis of cancer, but helps them to choose the best course of treatment. Genetic testing can help not only you but also your family as it identifies faulty genes. There is a 50% chance that the children can have the same gene if one of the parents is found to be gene positive. Genomic testing gives information related to the cancer that has been tested and therefore it has implications for the individual with the diagnosis of cancer.

It identifies the genes that influence tumour growth and how active they are. It helps to predict the aggressiveness of cancer. Breast cancer of an individual can differ completely from another and genomic testing helps to get personalised information of breast cancer in an individual. By measuring the activity, one may be able to make the decision of additional treatment following surgery i.e. chemotherapy. Genomic testing can help to choose the treatment. It can show which patients are unlikely to benefit, so they can avoid having unnecessary drugs and unpleasant side effects. How is it done?
It is done from previously biopsied cancer. The breast tissue is sent to a central laboratory for testing and a personalised report is prepared and sent to your doctor (oncologist). Your doctor will discuss the result and guide you about the treatment. What are the commonly used genomic tests?
The most commonly used genomic test in the UK is Oncotype DX test. Some of the other tests are EndoPredict test and Mammaprint. etc. How can I get this test done?

T
his year, I took the conscious decision to change the way I work in order to give myself a better work-life balance. I made a list of things that I wanted to change. I would walk more, meet new people and stop finding excuses not to do things. The list was quite lengthy. One of my first steps was to join a local community meet-up. Chatting with people I had never met before, I found myself learning things about Tunbridge Wells past and present. At around this time, I embarked on the Tunbridge Wells Circular Walk with a friend who has lived here all her life. She shared so much knowledge about the places we were walking through, most, if not all, of which I was totally ignorant. “How long have you lived here?” was a question repeatedly being asked of me. To my horror, I realised that I have lived in Tunbridge Wells for 25 years and that there is so much that I don’t know about the area and so many places I have never been. Once I started to think about this further, I realised that I tend to hang out in the same places, eat and drink coffee in the same cafés and restaurants, but that in doing so, I am missing out on discovering potential new favourites.
So, I have set myself a mini challenge or, more grandly, devised a proactive set of measurable goals, which I will undertake and complete within the year. For example… VISIT FIVE NEW RESTAURANTS AND CAFÉS I have already discovered The Fine Grind and The Velo House, where I treated myself to an amazing breakfast (I really should have done a long cycle ride afterwards). The Beacon, Framptons, The Kentish Hare and many more are on my wish list. Don’t worry Bicycle Bakery, Black Dog and Kai’s Kitchen – I will be back. ATTEND FIVE NEW EVENTS We are so lucky to have local theatres and concert venues of the calibre of Trinity Theatre, the Assembly Hall Theatre and The Forum, along with different types of specialist markets and outdoor events such as the Winter Lantern Parade, the recent Mela festival, Jazz on The Pantiles and Local and Live. I will be attending the Food and Drink Festival in September, the Puppetry Festival in October and actively seek out more open-air theatre.
TRY FIVE NEW ACTIVITIES This same friend and I walked just over one third of the Tunbridge Wells Circular and, by the time you read this, we will have completed the remainder. I have gone back to practising yoga regularly and am considering a weekend retreat. I will discover Happy Valley, new woodland walks and go kayaking with the children. Perhaps I can even persuade the family to participate in Run or Dye next year?

LEARN AT LEAST FIVE NEW FACTS ABOUT TUNBRIDGE WELLS I didn’t know that there used to be a racecourse on Tunbridge Wells Common and evidence of it can still be seen at one point on Major Yorks Road. I hope to be able to coherently describe Beau Nash and the history of The Pantiles to visiting friends, perhaps slightly embellishing the mystery of the Grey Lady. However, this is not just about eating, drinking and entertainment, as the more I
thought about it, the more I realised that doing these activities and events would be so much better with family and friends. As someone who enjoys meeting new people and hearing their stories, my final goal, therefore, was to make five new friends and reconnect with those with whom I have lost touch. I am so thrilled to say that I have already achieved this and my life is undoubtedly the richer for it. Dilly + Diti is a business born from two next door neighbours, Estelle and Afroditi, whose children were always at one another’s house. DATE Their biggest piece of advice prior to arranging your party is to make sure you send a ‘save the date’ at least two months before you intend to hold your party. With around 30 children in each class at school, natural party dates and times are going to clash, therefore sending a simple save the date can avoid this. Another benefit of sending a save the date is they provide you with an indication of how many children will be attending your party – making sure you have a head start in planning, as well as allowing you to budget accordingly.

Children’s parties are becoming increasingly popular, particularly for younger ages, and Dilly + Diti share with us their predictions of some of the key trends we will see over the next 12 months. “The love of oversized and statement balloons is a trend set to stay around for a while – they make such an instant impact and can be decorated in bold and fun ways, which of course all children love. ‘Doughnut walls’ are an emerging trend which is becoming more popular in the UK, they are super fun and enjoyed by everyone. These also prove extremely popular at wedding receptions as something a little different instead of a traditional dessert table. On the theme of food,
we are seeing a rise in popularity for ‘naked cakes’ (no icing!) and calligraphy cake toppers, which are a beautiful way to complement and incorporate your colour scheme as well as bucking convention. As for colours, metallic shades will always be popular as they are so eye-catching, however, following the trend of Pantone (their 2017 colour of the year ‘greenery’ influenced the tropical and palm themes this year) in 2018 we will see more vibrant colours rather than pastels, such as Pantone’s ‘minion yellow’. rt has played a very important part in my life. As a child my parents said that I used to look at paintings in exhibitions for ages, just staring. But the first sign of loving art was when I was about eight and I used to spend my time drawing the house from different angles. The worst thing I did when I was only 11, is I decided to take my parents’ Hepplewhite chairs and paint them purple, as you do…I must say, all credit to my parents they didn’t get cross, they just told me not to paint anything else! However, I painted the fireplace in my bedroom…they just couldn’t stop me! I carried on painting through school and
it became my best subject. Quite frankly, it was the only thing I was quite good at. I decided to go to The Heatherly School of Fine Art; I studied under Cubic Bevis doing sculpture for a year. This was such a privilege, and I didn’t appreciate how special this was until I was older. I then went to The Northwich School of fine art, to do a foundation course, and was persuaded to go into a three year interior design course. Interior design was not what I wanted to do, and I have never told anyone this except my close friends, but I refused to take the final of my exams and left two weeks before. I was doing something I wasn’t happy with, and I was worrying about failing. I never told my parents why. I then went on to work for Jack Kinnair Architects in the city, where I was given the opportunity to complete my SIA exams. I was doing layouts and building construction drawings for the Miller Howe Hotel at the time, and all I was interested in was meeting the chef John Tovey… There was this other life that I was
forging out for myself – cooking. It was only a hobby, but I loved it. I would get up at three in the morning and practice recipes – all I wanted to do was to cook. I do not want to go on about my career in cooking, but art and cooking are connected. I think food is a type of art form. The relationship between art and food is very similar, and it starts with an emotion. For example, when you go to a restaurant for a celebration, you are going to celebrate a birthday or an anniversary, and having food is part of it; the food is the vehicle to make the celebration for everyone to come together. So combining the two creates pleasure. When I look at and study a painting I find it emotional, I like to follow it through with the story whether it be modern or old. Food has been explored in every way in paintings too. You eat with your eyes – how many of you have seen a painting of a fruit or vegetable and said “that looks amazing”? One of my favourite food still life paintings is Renoir’s ‘Fruits of the Midi’; it’s a wonderful painting of peppers and tomatoes. He did so many still lifes, and every one is a masterpiece. When I think of a new dish I visualise it on a plate, I think of the picture, then work backwards and decide how I will make it. I look at balance, texture, colour and flavour. This is why I feel art is there – it’s how it’s executed onto the plate and for a brief moment before you eat it it’s definitely a form of art. I strongly feel that cooking is a type of conceptual art. It’s all about the ideas. I think art is the most exciting thing, it moves on with every new generation, each time, teaching us new things. Although I cannot go back, I can enjoy and encourage anybody to keep painting.

rior to the opening of Zorba, in the So office we regularly berated the lack of local Turkish restaurants in Tunbridge Wells. Despite plentiful (very good) eateries in the town, there was something missing – but, I’m pleased to report that the vacancy has finally been filled, by a very promising candidate. The sun streams through the windows as we arrive at the new eatery, instantly making us feel as though we’re about to sit down to meze in the Med. For this review I’ve decided to bring two guests, because in my view, this is a meal best shared. Not that I’m opposed to eating it all myself, by any means… It’s a Monday night, and even though Mr Zorba tells us that Mondays are the quietest, there’s still quite a buzz. Families, friends and even solo diners fill the restaurant, and as each party enters they’re warmly welcomed – like members of the family arriving for a Sunday roast.

We order drinks – Efes draft beer (£4.95) and Turkish red wine – Kavaklidere Yakut (£4.95) both of which go down a treat. Then, we begin the difficult task of choosing our food from the very extensive menu before us. Filled with cold and hot options, grilled meats and fresh salads, we really are spoiled for choice. The great thing about meze is you don’t have to choose – you can have the best of all worlds – especially if you order under the guise of “sharing”. We opt for a mix of dishes – the taramasalata and çali fasulye (both £4.95) from the cold list, and the peynirli börek and king prawns (both £5.95) as our hot choices. There is a danger in meze, in that even though you’re sharing, you have to be careful not to eat too much and ruin your appetite. That said, it’s tricky – the food is just too delicious not to devour. The taramasalata is smooth, creamy and light, the çali fasulye which consists of green

beans in an olive oil and tomato sauce is full of flavour, the peynirli börek, which are little parcels of feta cheese and spinach are light and moreish, and the king prawns are the biggest and juiciest I’ve ever tasted. There’s no denying the food is freshly prepared and cooked – with a large window looking straight into the kitchen, you can see the care and attention that goes into each dish – and, more importantly, you know exactly when your food is about to make its way to your table. Our main courses consist of the chicken wings coated in marinade (£14.95), the lamb chops (£14.95) which are described on the menu as ‘the most tender lamb chops you will taste’, and for me, the grilled sea bream (£16.95). We eagerly tuck in, and all around the table come the appreciative murmurs conducive with very good food. My guest who has ordered the chicken wings has Turkish roots and his speciality dinner party dish is chicken wings – so one could assume he’ll be hard to please.

“The great thing about meze is you don’t have to choose – you can have the best of all worlds – especially if you order under the guise of sharing” Not so – he’s impressed, describing the flavour as “unique”, and unlike anything he’s had before. Win. The lamb chops are also going down a treat – my other guest concurs that they are, in fact, the most tender she’s ever tasted. Praise indeed. My sea bream is equally pleasing – crisp on top and succulent beneath, it’s served with rice and salad and is full of fresh flavours. The staff are attentive and eager to please, but perhaps a little too eager sometimes – they begin clearing our plates before we’ve all finished, which makes an otherwise
leisurely meal feel slightly hurried. Unlike a Turkish restaurant in East London, the portions here are generous but not overwhelming, and Mr Zorba explains that it’s a conscious decision to make it that way – the Tunbridge Wells consumer doesn’t want quite the same amount on their plate. The good news about a smaller portion however, is there’s more room for dessert – in this case, tempting baklava, sticky with honey and crunchy with pistachios. You can tell this is the real deal – they’re sweet without being sugary or sickly, and incredibly moreish. Teamed with a Turkish coffee, which is small but strong, this is the perfect way to end what has been a truly delicious meal. Zorba is what Tunbridge Wells has been crying out for – a buzzy, traditional Turkish restaurant with a family feel and delicious food. Spend a couple of hours inside with good company and even better food and you really will feel as though you’ve been on holiday. No passport required…

Why is gin so in? We find out why ‘mother’s ruin’ has become our must-have tipple…
S
orry vodka, apologies rum – there’s a new cool drink in town. You may have noticed, but gin’s having a bit of a renaissance. More than a bit, in fact – according to the Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WSTA), gin sales have grown more than any other spirit sold in the UK in the last year, with 43million bottles, worth £1.1bn sold. That’s a lot of gin. Gin has been around since the 17th century, and in the 18th century it became so popular there was even a time period known as the ‘Gin Craze’. In the 1920s it became a favoured spirit in cocktails, and its inclusion in James Bond films in his favoured “shaken, not stirred” Martini, made it a household drink. But, although the big gin powerhouses, such as Gordon’s were still steadily making gin, there was little in the way of craft distilleries until 2009, when Sipsmith became the first
copper pot gin distillery in London for nearly 200 years. Since then, the rise in distilleries and the production of craft gin has been unprecedented – last year alone, 45 distilleries opened in the UK, bringing the total to 273, more than double the number from 2010. One such distillery is Greensand Ridge in Shipbourne, the passion project of drinks enthusiast Will Edge. In just a short space of time he’s seen the effects of the gin boom. “My distillery is only 9 months old but I’m now stocked in about 150 pubs and bars around the weald as well as many wine and bottle shops,” he explains. “Gin is going through the same process of reinvention that beer and cider have done: some initial brands enter an established but undifferentiated market and generate appreciation of a craft approach so consumers are willing to pay a little bit more for something of higher quality. This in turn means

It’s not that people didn’t like gin before, but you can only be so enthused about a category when there are four brands to choose from!” Gin producers aren’t the only ones seeing a hike in interest – trade sales have increased by 12% in a year with more people choosing it as their go-to tipple when out in restaurants and bars. “Having started out with 19 gins we now stock over 100 as the gin out sells everything else,” say owners of Chapel Place Gin & Wine Bar in Tunbridge Wells, Andy Over and Vicky Vyner. Noticing the growing gin trend, the pair set up the bar 18 months ago, and have seen a steady rise in demand for gin. “Artisan independent distillers have recognised the recent trend and started up in numbers. Gin’s no longer a stuffy drink for middle England – it's now a cool option for everyone to enjoy.” And enjoying it we are – the UK drank a record amount of gin last year – the equivalent of 1.12bn G&Ts. “2016 became known as the ‘Year of Gin’ and we have seen the quintessentially British spirit continue to fly off the supermarket shelves,” says Chief Executive of the Wine and Spirit Trade Association, Miles Beale. “The quality of the gin combined with the world’s love for brand Britain has seen British gin breaking records both at home and abroad. Gin sales in the UK broke the £1 billion mark for the first time last year and we sold more British gin overseas than
ever before – worth almost half a billion pounds”. As Miles points out, it’s not just us here in Blighty who are drinking up – the UK is the biggest gin exporter in the world, distributing to 139 countries across the globe. Since 2000, gin exports have increased by 73% and by value 166%. We might be drinking gin by the bucketload, but we’ve also become more interested in its creation and origins. “The latest WSTA Market Report shows that consumers are willing to spend more for a quality gin experience,” explains Miles. People have increasingly sophisticated palettes and are interested in the locality, provenance and authenticity of what they are drinking.” Since the creation of Greensand Ridge, provenance is something Will is very aware of too. “It’s very true that the look and feel of a brand is as important as ever, but now consumers are expecting different flavours whereas once upon a time no one would launch a gin that didn’t taste broadly the same as all the others,” he says. “We’re getting to the stage now where people will ask the same questions they might with wine – where is it made, with what botanicals, by who…. provenance as it applies to spirits is becoming better understood.” It’s official – the world is on the gin wagon, and it doesn’t look likely we’ll be getting off any time soon. As Miles puts it: “The ‘Great British Gin Take Off ’ has grown into a global phenomenon which shows no sign of slowing.” SO Magazine / AUGUST 2017 / 89

parks fly in the night sky as beautiful, sequin clad dancers twirl flaming torches and twist in and out of the beanbags that guests have gathered on. Cocktails in hand, we watch with delight and clap along with their singing and dancing. The vibe is relaxed, the excitement palpable and the merriment contagious. This is a beach BBQ Mauritian style… and it’s everything you would expect. Throw in artfully fringed palm trees, glittering seas as far as the eye can see and those infamous white sandy beaches that flood your mind whenever you picture paradise, and you can quite understand why Mark Twain once said: “You gather the idea that Mauritius was made first, and then heaven, and that heaven was copied after Mauritius.” That was back in 1896, so what’s new to say about the tropical utopia? Well, honeymooners don’t put away your bikinis just yet; it’s still one of the most picturesque places on earth and lures thousands of tourists every
year thanks to its glorious weather and stunning scenery. But while you could find that elsewhere – say the Dominican Republic, or even the Maldives – what sets this island nation off Africa’s east coast apart from other pretty corners of the world, is the exciting history and bubbling undercurrent of culture. The story of Mauritius is fascinating. This is the land of the dodo; a plump flightless bird who had no real reason to evolve into anything less eatable, as nothing was trying to kill it on the otherwise uninhabited island. That is, until humans descended in 1638. First the Dutch and then the French, who brought with them slaves from West Africa and skilled workers from China. By the time the British took over in 1338, bringing with them Indian labourers, slavery had been abolished and the dodo was extinct. So this strange start to life is what makes the country a wonderful mix of cultures, cuisines, religions and language. The British influences are still evident (cars drive on the left) and most people speak French.

With Indians, French, Chinese and Africans calling it home, the island is packed with Indian temples, colonial houses, tea plantations, botanical gardens and truly delicious food – with everything from Indian sweet shops (if you know, you know) and steamed dumplings on the roadside to fresh grown tea. Unlike the Maldives, it’s not just beaches here. Should you venture inland, you’ll find steep rugged hills and mountains ideal for exploring. This is best done on electric bicycles, to get you up to those hills without too much of a burn! Check out D’Unienville bike tours, who take you around the Chamarel area in the south, stopping off at the Rhumerie de Chamarel to sample the island’s famous rum. Those luxury resorts associated with lazy sun holidays are all here of course, and they’re done well. The tourist hub is located in the north, where most of these hotels are, including The Residence, a plantation house-inspired hotel on the renowned east coast. It’s relaxed yet still impressively grand and the traditional décor and luscious tropical gardens grab your eye at every turn. Fringed with a private beach and serviced by a never-ending stream of helpful workers, you’d be hard pushed to find fault in this perfectly polished and most beautiful resort. The south of the island is wilder, but arguably all the more beautiful for this. Here in Bel Ombre is where you’ll find Outrigger, a barefoot-chic resort with fun concepts like a tea library and wine tasting. Their beach-side crab shack serves up the
biggest shrimp you’ve ever seen and seafood platters to make your jaw drop. Most of these hotels focus on total relaxation and indulgence – spoiling you rotten with spa treatments, water sports, top-notch golf courses, world class restaurants and a steady trickle of totally Instagrammable cocktails that mean many guests don’t want to leave their sundrenched bolthole. But you must! There’s so much to keep the adventurous explorer occupied here. The 160km of coastline surrounded by coral reefs are enough to get you digging out your snorkel, while an animal sanctuary located on a tiny coral island (Ile Aux Aigrettes Island) only accessible by boat is packed with island wildlife and home to ‘Big Daddy’ – a giant tortoise pushing 100, who lives here with many females. A bit like a scalier Hugh Hefner, I imagine. The arts scene has come on in leaps and bounds and during my stay here the annual Porlwi by Light festival is in swing. It’s a chance for artists and performers to showcase their talents in the busy capital, Port Louis, and you really see the country some to life. Market stalls line the busy streets, serving up some of the most creative street food I’ve ever seen. After a week of exploring the island, I feel there’s a lot left to discover, and plenty more to draw me back here in the future. But for now, I’m happy putting my feet up at the beach barbecue, where that trickle of cocktails continues and platter after platter of authentic Mauritian food descends on the table. If I stay any longer I think I’d be as fat and useless as the dodo…

FUTURE TALENTS
Bethany’s Art & Design and Technology departments joined forces to put on an exhibition showcasing some of the finest work achieved by AS and A Level pupils over the past year. With a range of artistic forms on display, the colourful exhibition explored the versatility of the pupils’ talents and shared their stories, many of them striking an emotional chord with the guests who came to enjoy the exhibit. The show, ‘You Are the Future’, aimed
to explore the techniques and skills important to creative careers and with primary schools Marden and Lamberhurst St Mary’s coming along, they hoped they would spark inspiration and help to ensure creative industries continue to flourish for future generations. Mr Mike Turner, head of art at Bethany School, says: “pupils have worked on areas such as graphic design, filmmaking, game design, textiles, furniture design… it is great to see pupils work in such an innovative way.”
PLANS TO EXPAND
For the first time in nearly 50 years, Cranbrook School is celebrating the arrival of its first intake of 11 year olds. Thirty students will start at the ‘outstanding’ Ofsted rated school this September following recent approval by the government to expand. Cranbrook’s catchment area contains 12 major feed primaries and three preparatory schools. The chair of governors, James Peace, says: “With
Forest Kindergarten has launched a new forest school at Hosey Hill, Westerham. With the support of Squerryes Estate, they aim to provide local children with more opportunities to get outdoors. The new school will provide activities for children from 3 to 10 year olds – including den building, woodland art, crafts, and bug hunting. The school will run on weekdays in term-time as well as school holidays. A recent report found that 74% of British children spent less than an hour per day in the fresh air, with one child in five not playing outside at all. “I am excited to be able to offer our forest school now to parents, tots and children in the holidays, building on the success of our recent OFSTED ‘Outstanding’ rating”, says Caroline Watts, founder of Forest Kindergarten.

THE DIAMOND DRIVE Fiat has created a special-edition 500 in honour of the car’s 60th birthday. Jack Evans tests it out in Turin WHAT’S NEW? This year marks the 60th anniversary of the original Fiat 500. The compact forebear to the modern 500 was immensely popular, offering low-cost, affordable motoring to the masses. The new car took on the cutesy styling of the classic 500, bringing it into the modern age with better practicality and a lot more safety. To celebrate the car’s birthday, Fiat has released this – the 60th. It gets a range of retro touches ideal for anyone looking to stand out from the crowd – though nothing has changed mechanically. The familiar 1.2-litre turbocharged engine is under the bonnet, linked to a five-speed manual gearbox.

LOOKS AND IMAGE A range of special-edition 500s have been created throughout the car’s lifetime. There was a Riva model, built in partnership with the famous boat builders, as well as a range of cars made in conjunction with several fashion brands. This is the latest special-edition, and as such comes with a host of ‘look at me’ additions. There are retro Fiat badges dotted throughout the interior, as well as on the exterior of the car. A unique ‘dolcevita’ two-tone paintwork has been applied to the body, giving it all of the retro looks of the original, while chrome ‘hub cap’ style alloy wheels certainly ape those fitted to the old 500.
A new seven-inch TFT display has also been fitted inside, housing satellite navigation and media functions. Speaking of media, both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto have now been included in the 500’s infotainment system, giving drivers a better way of pairing their smartphones to the car’s system. SPACE AND PRACTICALITY As mentioned earlier, there haven’t been any mechanical changes made to the 60th, meaning that the 500 is just as compact as the standard car. It’s not as practical as the standard car, therefore, which is worth remembering if you’re planning on using the 60th as an everyday vehicle. BEHIND THE WHEEL Our test route took in the narrow, cobbled streets of Turin – the 500’s home territory. Its swift and nimble handling makes darting in and out of traffic a breeze, while the peppy engine suits the car’s frenetic, eager character. The ride remains quite firm, though the 16-inch special-edition wheels fitted to this car likely play a large part in this problem. Of course, the 500’s ‘city steering’ button
remains, which lightens the car’s steering to almost comedic levels, but makes the 500 ideal for travelling through urban areas – as well as changing parallel parking into a manoeuvre that only takes a moment’s notice. VALUE FOR MONEY As mentioned earlier, the biggest benefit to the 500’s interior is the all-new, larger infotainment display. It’s relatively simple to navigate, and has decent enough sensitivity. However, its lack of a cowl means that it’s a nightmare to read in direct sunlight, something which, in a car with a folding roof, is bound to happen. It’s an oversight that will likely prove a nightmare in daily use. Elsewhere, everything feels of a relatively good quality. However, the
red finish applied to the 60th Anniversary Edition’s dash feels scratchy and hard, something that you’d think would have been avoided in a commemorative car. The retro Fiat badges do make the car feel special however, while most people will no doubt be attracted by the car’s uber-retro styling touches. It’s also fitted with a commemorative plaque, signifying the car’s limited-edition status. WHO WOULD BUY ONE? The Fiat 500 60th is a good choice for those who want to stand out from the crowd, and like a little extra magic with their 500. The basic recipe remains unchanged, but given its limited-edition status, it’s one that is likely to appeal to many.

Go green at home with our guide to embracing houseplants

ouseplants are back in vogue. Once a popular feature in Sixties and Seventies homes, they fell out of favour in the minimalist Nineties, but now going green indoors is all the rage again. “We’ve observed the creeping return of greenery in the way some of the chicest folk around decorate their homes today,” says Kara O’Reilly, co-author with Ian Drummond of At Home With Plants. “Cool interiors are upping the variety of plant pots in their ranges, and there’s a revival of everything from terrariums to
hanging planters as decorative elements.” “One of the most amazing things about houseplants is that you enjoy them all year round, and there’s nothing more satisfying to the soul than nurturing a living thing,” adds Kara. “With a little know-how, even the least green fingered among us can grow an indoor plant. But be warned – once you start, the look will grow on you!”
LIVING ROOM “Houseplants can have enormous impact in
a living room because there are so many areas to display them,” says Kara. “Follow the fashion for hanging planters – in macrame, metal or marble – and attach them to the ceiling to create a ‘green screen’. Or invest in a set of open shelves, fill with potted plants to make a room divider. Quirky containers for foliage – such as vintage hampers – will inject personality into a setting” How to display: Surfaces from mantels to shelves, windowsills and side tables are perfect homes for plants. space, go to town with a group of different sized, floorstanding architectural palms to create a focal point. What to pick: Palms, weeping figs or finger trees are all conversation pieces. Choose plants in foliage colours to complement your ornaments or colour scheme, such as trailing plants, English ivy, chain cactus; or flowering plants such as flamingo flower, pink quill or vanda orchids.
KITCHEN “The kitchen’s the heart of the home, so why not show yours a little love with some creative planting?” says Kara. “Herbs are an obvious choice, as they’re attractive, an invaluable cooking ingredient and their fragrance can mask odours.” How to display: Try placing a large container of mixed herbs on a table, or plant individual varieties of herbs in matching pots and line them up along a shelf, a windowsill, or a work surface.
What to pick: Chives, coriander, mint, basil. They prefer a light, bright position such as a sunny windowsill and regular water and occasional misting. Ideally, buy plants from a garden centre as they’ll last longer. Asplenium ferns, echeveria succulents and moth orchids also thrive in kitchens with lots of light.
BATHROOM “Most bathrooms tend to fall into one of two camps: light and humid, or dark and humid. While light levels are obviously a key consideration when choosing plants for any space, with a bathroom you need to select humidity-loving plants above all,” advises Kara. How to display: Arrange plants so they’re within your sight line when taking a soak in the tub or a shower. In a small space, choose miniature varieties and dot them amongst your lotions and potions. What to pick: Cacti and most succulents are an absolute

no-no. Orchids, ferns, aloes and palms all like humidity and can also tolerate fluctuations in temperature. Trailing plants work well, including spider plants; heart-leaf philodendron and chestnut vine. Foliage plants are a better choice for a dark bathroom as flowering plants generally need higher levels of light.
“Plants don’t only look good in bedrooms – but they can also help us feel calm and act as natural air conditioners, gently raising the humidity levels and improving air quality,” says Kara. How to display: A plant on a bedside table will upgrade its look and is a welcoming touch for a guest. Consider an indoor tree by a bed, or hanging planters to bring interest to a dull corner. What to pick: Plants that cope with slightly lower temperatures and potentially lower light levels. Seek out varieties which are proven toxic filters, such as heartleaf philodendron and peace lily. Improve air quality by choosing plants that release oxygen at night, such as orchids, Barbados aloe and mother-inlaw’s tongue; while lavender (known as a sleep inducer) could scent the air. Our gardening expert Victoria Truman explains why gardening is good for your health Horticultural therapy: ‘Gardening makes us feel renewed inside’ Researchers have come to the conclusion that gardening is actually beneficial to your health. In fact, it has been found that pulling weeds and smelling roses can actually lower blood pressure, help you feel happier, and increase brain activity. Because of the overwhelming body of evidence, it has been dubbed “horticulture therapy,” which is used in a variety of settings to help people cope with their emotions and illnesses. Most notably, it’s being used in hospitals, schools, and even in prisons. From a personal point of view whenever I need to feel recharged or I’m in need of escaping I head out into my garden and spend the day working in it, weeding, mowing, clipping-seldom sitting! By the end I’m happy, aching, recharged and full of new ideas and designs!
Another study, published online in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, found that active hobbies like yard work and gardening were as good as going to the gym for heart health. Older adults with hobbies like this were able to cut their risk of heart attack or stroke and their chances of dying from any cause by 30%! When you walk out into a garden and you literally smell the roses, see the bees buzzing on the lavender it instantly uplifts the soul and mood. The people I deal with and work with in my field (pardon the pun) are helpful, engaging, free spirited and for the main relaxed and I am pretty sure that’s down to the amount of time we all spend engaging our senses with gardens, landscapes, plants and trees.
