Culture vulture: what’s on where this month

W

elcome to your February edition of SO magazine. With the long, dark and cold days of January behind us we can start to think about coming out of our traditional winter hibernation. And thanks to Covid restrictions being lifted we can start socialising a lot more – especially on Valentine’s Day if you’re celebrating it!

Which is why we thought it was the perfect time to talk to hair and beauty experts – and SO cover stars - 21…Lifestyle about looking and feeling good. Turn to page 8 to discover all about the talented team who run what has to be one of the town’s most stunning salons.

Also in this issue we have an education special which covers everything from how extracurricular sports can help progress learning, to the importance of STEM subjects and why students cannot be pigeonholed. It’s an informative read that starts on page 27.

LIGHT UP YOUR LIFE The annual Winter Lantern Parade takes place again on Saturday February 5 from 5.30pm until 7.30pm. Run by the artists’ collective CREATE the aim is to ‘Light Up The Town’ courtesy of the many homemade lanterns that have been made in a series of organised workshops run

by CREATE. This year the theme is ‘Food’ so expect to see lots of fun epicurean inspired creations as TW residents make their way up Camden Road, through town and onto Grosvenor and Hilbert Park. For more info see www.camdenroad.org

Around 100,000 snowdrop bulbs have been planted in Hever Castle’s gardens over the past few years. So why not wrap up warm and have a stroll around taking in some unusual varieties in the Winter Garden such as the yellow tipped ‘Wendy’s Gold’, a giant Galanthus called ‘Colossus’ which at 9 inches is one of the tallest snowdrops you can find. You can also spot Galanthus ‘Green Brush’ with its unusual green tipped flowers. Garden writer and galanthophile Val Bourne will also be delivering a snowdrop talk on Saturday February 12. HOODWINKED! Over at Trinity Theatre you can catch a performance of The Miraculous MisAdventures of Robin Hood which is showing from February 10 to February 16 at various times. Brought to you by the team behind venue’s Christmas production The Prince and the Pauper and outdoor touring aficionados The Three Inch Fools, this is a hilarious musical reimagining of one of the world’s best-loved folk tales. SOMETHING FISHY’S GOING ON Railway fans will be pleased to hear that the Murder Mystery Fish & Chip Suppers are returning to the Spa Valley Railway for 2022. The first event takes place on February 12 and if you’ve not been before then the Who Dunnit plot will unfold while on board the train after a ‘murder’ is discovered. Police have drawn a blank on apprehending the villain, so passengers are called upon to sleuth it out! The evening starts at Tunbridge Wells West Station with a briefing at 6.15pm and a fish and chip supper will be served as the train travels through the High Weald countryside.

The evening finishes back at Tunbridge Wells West in the Victorian engine shed when all will become clear.

JOIN THE GREEN PARTY Calling all budding, greenfingered families to Penshurst Place for February half-term!

The historic stately home has a new, fun and interactive trail for adults and kids to enjoy.

Though gardens during February may not be full of colour, the little glimpses of snowdrops and the birdsong overhead signals the beginning of a very exciting time as nature awakens.

Budding young visitors will learn tips on germination and sowing tomato seeds as well as how to make fat balls at home to support the local bird population.

The country park at Bewl Water, located just off the A21, is the South East’s biggest reservoir and as well as all the recreational activities on offer there, it’s fair to say that it’s just a perfect place to go for a relaxing winter’s day walk.

The 800-acre site is set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, right in the heart of the High Weald. Entrance costs £5 per vehicle.

“This is going to be our best festival yet…”

This month SO’s resident music columnist Paul Dunton talks to Black Deer founders Gill Tee and Deborah Shilling about their plans to finally host their beloved Americana festival after Covid cancelled it for the past two years.

It takes place over the weekend of June 21-23…

So let’s start with you telling SO readers all about the essence of Black Deer?

It is a festival on a mission to bring real roots-inspired music to the UK. We’re Europe’s leading Americana festival and an award-winning one at that! We were first established in 2018 but due to the pandemic couldn’t host in 2020 or 2021.Black Deer is not just about hearing the music you love, it’s about discovering music you’re going to love and experiencing the unique cultural richness that surrounds the everpopular way of life that is Americana.

What can festival goers expect for 2022?

Fun and good times with good people! Following postponements in 2020 and 2021, Black Deer Festival 2022 is going to be the best yet. On our music bill Americana pioneers Wilco will play their only UK date of 2022 and there’ll also be Mike Scott’s legendary The Waterboys as well as the iconic Irish singer-songwriter legend Van Morrison playing live in the deer park. Country music is well-represented with emerging heroes such as Courtney Marie Andrews, The Dead South and Pokey Lafarge all signed up, while the roots heroes that represent the very best of Americana’s broad church like Drive-By Truckers, Imelda May, Jake Bugg, Foy Vance and The Milk Carton Kids will all be appearing live.

Young visitors can learn music, rodeo, climb trees and explore hand-on skills with the likes of Woodland Tribe, a non-profit CIC promoting adventure play. They give kids access tools such as drills, nails, hammers and a whole lot of wood to build their own structures over the three days of the festival. It takes them all working as a team to build something magical and tangible they can take ownership of – we’ve had a western village, fortress and railway train in previous years – they get so involved and don’t want to leave it behind when it’s time to return home.

It’s a brilliantly healthy way to keep them engaged, learning and happy.

It's fantastic to see Black Deer working with the SupaJam foundation once again, what can we expect in this regard for the 2022 festival?

The SupaJam ethos is to be forward thinking, caring and encouraging whilst providing a structured, supportive and non-judgemental environment. There’s also an express blow dry salon and a gents’ grooming station too - complete with super cool retro barber chairs, funky statement lighting and oversized mirrors. In the basement are three beautifully appointed treatment rooms, and a wet room, while upstairs you’ll find the main ladies’ hairdressing salon which boasts floor-to-ceiling windows, and gorgeous views over the Common.

On the top floor is the salon’s newly launched Lifestyle Studio which is available to hire – mainly for yoga and Pilates classes. So far so impressive. This is most definitely not your average hairdressers…

experience in order to offer the good people of Tunbridge Wells and beyond a beauty emporium that could easily rival any of the capital’s finest.

Justine and Tina met while working at Toni and Guy in 1992 and the pair were there for a decade before joining another high end salon in Tunbridge Wells in 2002. It’s where they met Stuart who was one of the establishment’s original founders.

Justine and Tina stayed there for five years before deciding to launch their own salon.

“So in 2007 Tina and I decided to go it alone and opened Orchid, a boutique hair salon located on the Camden Road,” explains Justine.

Orchid proved to be very popular and the stylists went on to be regional finalists in the Wella Trend Vision international competition. The successful salon was also featured on BBC1’s Inside Out on a few occasions too.

That same year Stuart decided to set up his own place: Real Salon and Spa in Grosvenor Road. Rather cleverly he had the foresight to be the first hairdressers in Tunbridge Wells

“At 21… we believe age is just a number and don’t have a ‘look’, the cut, the style, the treatment is all yours. We listen to you and we find out what you want when it comes to your hair and beauty. We’re not afraid to help you be a bit more adventurous, but everything is

to exclusively stock the eco-friendly Aveda brand. .

“I wanted to stock Aveda as I believe in its environmental ethos and know how good the products are, not just in terms of their chemical-free efficacy but also the results they deliver,” reveals Stuart.

“I guess you could say setting up Real as an Aveda stockist was a small acorn of the vision that would go on to eventually evolve into our thinking behind 21…”

During that time Real went on to win a prestigious Environmental Business award.

The trio ran their respective salons for approximately 10 years before deciding to blend their collective experience and ideas together in offer to launch their London Road venture.

“We came from two completely different salon concepts and had an expansive and loyal clientele,” continues Tina, who is married to Stuart.

“Both salons were thriving and gaining a fantastic reputation with an in-demand team of stylists and therapists. But the three of us had

always shared a keen interest in educating and mentoring other stylists so we eventually decided to move on and go on our own business journey together. For us as directors it’s always been about building the team’s confidence and encouraging personal professional growth.”

Justine adds that thanks to both Orchid and Real salons being in great locations within Tunbridge Wells it gave a great community spirit to what they were doing and this was definitely something the three of them wanted to continue when launching next as a collective.

When the leases were up on both premises Justine, Tina and Stuart concluded that neither building had the adequate square footage needed to grow their individual brands, so five years ago they decided to join forces and started looking at a new location.

“The brief was to source an enviable and more desirable one with close proximity to The Pantiles, and preferably a period building,” states Stuart.

“We managed to fulfil that when we

found a beautiful Georgian building over four floors with wonderful view over the Common and that resulted in our new hair and beauty lifestyle concept store 21… being founded.”

Which brings us nicely to discovering the meaning behind the 21…Lifestyle name …

“It is the number of our address on London Road but the three dots at the end represent the three of us as directors, as well as being symbolic of a continuation of what we have started. We just felt the name cleverly tied in with the ever-growing business but also added a little intrigue,” smiles Justine.

When they took over the building at 21 London Road in 2017 the team certainly had their work cut out.

“All four floors were in a dilapidated state,” says Tina. But this didn’t put them off rolling up their sleeves and

getting to work. “With our creative vision, our own investments and the wonderful support of our families we went for it!”

The directors say that aside from having a lot of dedication, working with local builders W. Smithers and Sons and also the architect Melanie Pryor was a ‘fantastic experience’ and they are very proud of the magnificent space that’s been created.

“We initially opened just two floors, the ground one and our ladies’ salon on the first level,” Justine reveals. “Two years later we introduced our treatment rooms on the lower ground floor, creating a beautiful relaxing hub, where guests are able to fully unwind and switch off from the everyday stresses of life.”

and efficient running of 21…”

And in terms of the next five years of business what are Justine, Tina and Stuart looking forward to most?

“We are excited for the future and looking forward to expanding our team and evolving our brand.

As with all businesses, life is at times a balancing act - juggling a busy salon and family life can sometimes come with its own challenges,” admits Justine who is married with one daughter.

“But we have learnt and adapted over the years to be fully committed while also allowing ourselves to take time out away from the business for some muchneeded downtime, which is a real positive of 21… having three directors and being able to share the load is a real bonus.”

Being utterly confident of their staff’s ability is another string to 21… Lifestyle’s bow.

“They each have a wealth of knowledge in their field of expertise,” continues Tina. “They ensure they always create time for our guests to personalise their service requests. The environment here is a warm and welcoming one, with no egos and a supportive harmonious team - always with a smile.”

But having said all that they are not resting on their laurels.

Instead Stuart says they are always looking to further 21…

new year marks a new beginning and a clean slate. When the nights are long and days are short, it’s the ideal time to get into good financial habits that will make a real difference to yours and your family’s lives and give you valuable peace of mind.

Sadly, it’s inevitable that over the next few years businesses and citizens in countries around the world will face a greater tax burden to help pay for the cost of the Covid-19 pandemic. The UK is no different and that means people will have to pay more attention to their tax affairs to help reduce the pain, whether you are employed, self-employed or retired.

Here are a few simple habits to get into before the end of the tax year in April: MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR ALLOWANCES All of us have allowances that can help our money go further and our opinion is if something is limited with an allowance then it is usually good from a tax saving point of view.

PENSIONS – NOT JUST FOR RETIREMENT Make sure you are using up your pension allowances – most people are allowed to pay in £40,000 per year or 100% of their earnings if that is lower. HMRC help you pay for this – a basic rate taxpayer would only pay £32,000 of this and a higher rate taxpayer £24,000, on the basis that any tax relief over the basic rate is claimed via your annual tax return. You can even set one up for a non-earner or a child contributing just £2,880 whilst £3,600 is paid in for you.

For those who can afford more there is even the possibility of paying back into past years giving you an option of putting in up to £160,000 for a cost of £128,000 for a basic rate taxpayer.

BUILD UP A TAX-FREE NEST EGG Use up your ISA allowance in a Cash or Stocks & Shares ISA. ISAs have a contribution limit of £20,000 a year for an adult and £9,000 able to be paid in for a child. All of which will then get tax free efficient potential for the future. Cash ISAs can be good for short term monies but for longer term savings the returns from

Stocks & Shares can provide greater potential to really help build up a future savings pot for you. These can be a great addition in retirement enabling a tax free income to be paid out in addition to your pensions.

GIFTING TO YOUR FAMILY Each year we are all allowed to gift £3,000 to whomever we please so by planning to do this every year you can gradually reduce the amount your family may have to pay in Inheritance tax. It’s also a lovely way of seeing them enjoy some money now – I can’t tell you how grateful younger members of the family are to receive this – to have a holiday they might not be able to afford, help towards childcare or do some work to the house.

GET ORGANISED This is about controlling your money rather than letting it control you. Don’t wait until it is time to complete your tax return to scrabble around for paperwork and realise that you haven’t maximised ways to reduce your tax. A bit of planning means you could find next years tax bill more palatable.

SEIZE THE DAY The tax year may not end until 5th April, but there’s no need to create deadline stress by leaving everything until the last minute. In fact, the earlier these actions are taken the more tax efficiency you will gain.

SPEAK TO A FINANCIAL ADVISER, LIKE US This is perhaps the best habit to get into and the step that will drive other good financial habits. We regularly check in with our clients to remind them of their allowances and let them know what else might help them.

Tax can be a tricky area with lots of niche rules and frequent changes and therefore it’s important to seek out expert advice that’s just for you – no two people have exactly the same income, savings, assets and family set up, so tax planning is a very personal thing.

The value of advice is often overlooked but the estimated monetary value of advice is 1030% better returns than could be achieved without advice. 1This is because we make sure our clients make the most of their allowances and tax savings but also because we often stop them making costly mistakes.

When it comes to financial and tax planning in particular, getting into good habits so that they become second nature can set you up for the rest of your life. Now is the time to start.

Celebrating the opening of the new Luxe Vida emporium

When Anglo-Spanish, father and daughter business partners, Terence Pearce and Jessica Tucker couldn’t find a ‘one-stop shop’ for all their favourite little luxuries they decided to open their own. They hosted an exclusive launch of their new Luxe Vida store at the end of last year and since then it’s proved to be a huge hit on Tunbridge Wells High Street.

Originally the pair, who have over 50

years’ combined experience in luxury fashion and beauty, had wanted to go globetrotting in order to source all the sought-after pieces they now stock. But their plans to wander around the canals of Amsterdam, browse the souks of Istanbul and scour the flea markets of Brooklyn were firmly put on hold when the pandemic hit. So instead the pair set about curating an edit

of all the things they loved the most virtually.

Their new Luxe Vida boutique in town boasts an eclectic mix of fashion, homeware, fragrance and jewellery – with the cutest edit for kids in the funky basement too. And with a Barcelona outpost opening in April 2022 we think they’ve hit the jackpot when it comes to providing a stylish shopping fix for the fashion savvy.

If you’re looking to relax and unwind, where’s your favourite place to go?

Relaxing and unwinding isn’t usually my forte to be completely honest! But if I’m after some ‘me time’ a quiet pint in a nice pub ticks all the boxes for me.

Where’s the best place to meet friends and socialise – apart from Fuggles of course!?

That’s a really tricky question as we’ve so many great places locally – whether it’s food, drink or just going for a walk with the dog. There’s also loads of variety to suit lots of different occasions too. I’m not sure there’s enough space here to list them all!

This month SO magazine chats to Alex Greig, founder of Fuggles Beer Café and the newly opened Bottle Shop on Camden Road about where he likes to spend time in and around Tunbridge Wells when he’s not working Where do you live?

I now live in Southborough having previously lived in the town centre.

How long have you lived there and what made you decide to move?

We’ve been in our new home for just over a year – it’s a lovely, friendly area and close enough to town for everything else we might need.

What’s your favourite shop locally?

I’d probably have to say Locality the greengrocers on Camden Road. We use them at Fuggles and at home too.

They always have a great selection of seasonal fresh fruit and veg so you can’t really go wrong!

Where’s the best place to go for a Sunday stroll?

Hurst Woods is a lovely walk and always a favourite of ours to head out

What do you do when you spend a weekend or day off in the local area?

We’ve got a bonkers Cocker Spaniel and a one year old baby so days off usually involve a good dog walk and spending time with the family. That could be a nice meal with friends or family, or heading out a bit further into the countryside for a stroll.

Why do you love where you live?

I think we’re really lucky to be where we are: we have the countryside on our doorstep and a town centre full of great independent shops, pubs and restaurants too. This is a lovely friendly place to bring up a family and there’s plenty to do, whether it’s exploring what’s around us, seeing friends, seeing great live music or heading out for a meal. There’s lots of great events

to. It’s located on the north-west outskirts of Tunbridge Wells and features a number of non-native tree species. The dog loves the ‘water features’ – AKA the stream which flows through the woods - too!

The best place to get a cup of coffee?

The Black Dog on Camden Road is my usual go-to for my caffeine fix!

Where do you take people when they come to visit?

I’ll usually head to one of the great indie food and drink options we’ve got in town. We have such a great range of different establishments so it’s nice to show off the uniqueness of all the food and drink on offer here in Tunbridge Wells.

What’s the night life like where you live?

Southborough is pretty relaxed – so if we feel like going out properly then we tend to end up in town.

Where’s your favourite place to eat locally?

I’m a massive fan of Yatra on London Road in Southborough, their Indian food is really authentic. I love the street food style of everything they do and it’s perfect food to enjoy with beer.

Are there any nice views nearby to where you live?

The view on the Ridgeway in Southborough, either at sunrise or sunset, is lovely. The first full moon of this year was stunning to see first thing in the morning - and on a clear day you can see all the way to Hadlow from there.

This February, Jess Gibson of the TN card speaks to Grace Simpson, co-owner of Goupie - the much-loved local family business making ‘devilishly more-ish’ vegan confectionery for the nation. It’s also just announced it’s now being stocked at Liberty in London...

So Grace, what exactly is Goupie?

Goupie is a chocolate confection that’s been made by my family over three generations. It consists of a cocoa-rich syrup base, which is filled with toasted rice and biscuit, before being covered in chocolate. Goupie is very much its own thing, giving a uniquely chewy texture with a hint of crunch to our chocolate confectionery!

And how did the business begin?

Our business began almost by accident. Prompted by myself and my sister, my mum made a batch of Goupie and took it to some of our local cafes to see if it was something they might be interested in stocking.

Immediately we had orders, and so the business grew pretty organically from there! At the time, I was still in school,

onbridge School boys are putting their skills in creativity, innovation and teamwork to the test in the Junior House Engineering Competition.

In a ‘supercurricular’ programme being run by the Physics and Design Technology teams, Second Year boys are taking on a series of challenges ahead of

a grand final later in the year.

The latest round saw boys designing and building model rocket cars, before racing them over a distance of 50m at the School. The Whitworth team took the top honours – and the coveted trophy – after producing a rocket car which clocked up an amazing speed of more than 100mph.

Physics, said: “The main idea of the competition is to bring Physics and Design Technology to life, outside of normal classroom learning, allowing plenty of scope for creative thinking, innovation and fun way.”

t Skippers we value the importance of the individual. One of the most exciting elements of being in education is recognising a child’s unique abilities and encouraging their growth and development.

To help illustrate this we need to go back to the 1940s when the US Air Force started to wonder why so many of their planes were crashing. It was so serious that 17 pilots crashed in a single day. Their investigations led them to a

conclusion that was revolutionary. Back in 1926, when designing the first-ever cockpit, engineers measured the physical dimensions of hundreds of pilots and used this data to standardise the dimensions of the cockpit.

As part of the investigation into the cause behind the frequent crashes they measured ten body dimensions of 4063 pilots and found something stunning - not one of these pilots met the criteria of average. In other words, if you’ve designed a cockpit to fit

Elizabeth won her Scholarship for her project aimed at reducing cot deaths.

She is creating a tiny computer component that can be sewn into a baby grow and measures the temperature and orientation of a baby whilst sleeping.

The girls’ interest in applying for a scholarship was sparked by attendance at the

School’s STEM club. Mayfield’s Head of Physics & STEM Club founder, Dr Darragh Corvan, said, “We are actively encouraging the girls to explore the dynamic field of electronics and coding. In our STEM club, the girls get the opportunity to use Raspberry Pi microcomputers and Arduino microcontrollers to develop their projects. did not realise it was a party’. The infamous recent comments from the Prime Minister have been met with the full force of a 2022 social media barrage: memes have rapidly been created and proliferated, photoshop has been put to work and doctored images of BoJo at city centre raves have found their way into people’s Instagram stories. Perhaps one of the reasons why this story found so much traction, despite the obvious outrage at the core allegations, was the naked attempts by the main protagonists to craft alternative narratives out of the factual raw ingredients.

One might call it a party, but one might also call it a work gathering. It depends on how you want to look at it. If you want to view it in a negative light, be my guest, but that does not automatically mean that it is true! It is into this world of half truths, alternative realities, constructed narratives and faux outrage that our young people are growing up. It is the job of schools to try and provide

the intellectual and social tools our students can use to carve out an identity and career for themselves that has integrity, meaning and stability.

At Claremont we seek to instil good decision making at the heart of all that we do - both inside and outside the classroom.

Which is exactly why West Kent Youth Voices (WKYV) was founded three years ago and despite proving very successful so far the group is looking to recruit even more members to its choir.

Earlier this month it held a taster event at The Judd School in Tonbridge which saw a number of new recruits from local secondaries join but there is still the opportunity to join the WKYV ranks.

“This term we hope to have a workshop with international maestro Paul McCreesh and we are planning a collaboration with newly formed St Cecilia Wind Orchestra in the autumn.”

The choir hosts regular open rehearsals where students can try out the choir and sing as much or as little as they wish.

“If they like it they can sign up for a friendly constructive audition – which is really helpful if you don’t know which voice part you should sing,” explained Adrian.

Kindred spirits Eynsford and the symbol is said to represent eternity.

Can you tell us a little bit about the different types of gin you sell and what the key flavours are?

We have our multi award-winning Primo dry gin which is a contemporary take on the traditional London Dry. Our Rubesco Pink Gin uses the Primo base with strawberry and raspberry added for a slightly sweeter flavour and pink hue.

Which is your personal favourite?

I love a good quality premium dry gin and I’ve made one to my taste with the Primo so that’s my favourite. It tastes amazing with FeverTree Elderflower tonic, a crisp slice of Kentish Apple with a few blackberries and ice.

Where is Cantium gin distilled?

Well this is an extremely exciting time for us as we are renovating an old barn in Otford which will be our new distillery, bar and gin

academy. We also plan to build bespoke Shepherds huts in the nearby woodland where we will offer a ‘Ginstay’ experience for our distillery visitors.

How quickly has your business grown?

Our growth has been fairly restricted because of the ongoing pandemic. We started right at the beginning of it – which has to be the worst timing in history – and so we couldn’t do any fairs or events. But we have built a good retail business via our website cantiumgin.com and with local pubs and restaurants in Tunbridge Wells and beyond. We were also lucky enough to secure stockists at Fortnum and Mason in London and Harvey Nichols nationwide.

We’re also hoping to be in Fenwick’s soon.

Have you been able to start doing events now restrictions are lifting?

Husband and wife team Katie and Kevin Andrews tell us why they gave up their respective careers in PR and advertising to concentrate on launching Cantium – a local gin with a difference that’s stocked in lots of bars here in Tunbridge Wells but also Fortnum & Mason and Harvey Nichols stores So how did you come to launch a gin?

It all started in the garage of our old house in West Malling. Kevin has always been a gin fan and he was curious to know how it was made. So he decided to start making it - just for fun. Eventually he hit on a recipe that we both loved and, encouraged by positive feedback from friends and family, we decided to try and develop a brand.

You have used the Latin name for Kent – Cantium - as its name –what gave you this idea?

In the Iron Age, Kent was occupied by Cantiaci or Cantii tribes. Then when the Romans invaded this led them to name the

area ‘Cantium’. Our gin is inspired by the garden of England and its history, both in terms of its name and the ingredients we use, such as hops, lavender, cobnuts, apple and blackberry. Incidentally, many of these were actually introduced to Britain by the Romans.

Do you source all your key ingredients locally?

As much as we can yes as we want to keep our carbon footprint as small as possible. For example, the lavender we include comes from the famous fields at Castle Farm near Sevenoaks and our cobnuts come from Potash Farm in St Mary’s Platt. So we started looking into what we could do with any unwanted bottles. When we saw that one of the most requested items by homeless charities is receptacles to keep liquids hot, it was the answer we were looking for. We reached out to the charity and we now regularly donate both new and used flasks to them.

Have you won any significant awards since you launched in 2018?

We won our first Gold Award for Cantium Primo across the pond in the United States. We have also won bronze medals here and a design award at the IWSC for our bottle. We have also been listed as one of the ‘Must Try Gins of 2022’ by ShortList magazine and also The Gin Guide.

Why do you think craft gin has become so popular over the last few years?

Gin has always been popular in the U.K. but now we have moved on from mass produced brands with limited appeal and choice to lots of interesting smaller brands.

Having only been in business for a short while The Lyle on Forest Road is certainly making a name for itself as the place to dine out in Tunbridge Wells.

Eileen Leahy dropped by to discover the secret ingredients to its success so far…

I

t’s hard to imagine that the grand Tudor stylebuilding that is now the perfect home to The Lyle restaurant was once a run of the mill pub serving pints, a Sunday carvery and portions of takeaway fish and chips. But that in fact is exactly what it was before its new owners took over the sizeable Forest Road establishment in 2020.

My husband and I were invited along to dine there recently and couldn’t believe the transformation the building and epicurean offering - has undergone. In fact it is almost impossible to imagine it in its former guise as The Spread Eagle pub when you visit.

Outside the building has had a great deal of work done to it in order to improve its alfresco offering and bring its period charm back to life. The timber 40 | February 2022 | SO Magazine

framed building now boasts a smart paint job and to the back is a very nicely landscaped garden and alfresco dining area.

Inside it feels far more spacious than before and without a doubt far more sophisticated, elegant and luxurious. The décor is deeply stylish and firmly on point courtesy of its dark navy panelled walls, leather banquettes, burnt orange and pistachio velvet scalloped chairs and bronze statement wall lights which could easily double up as works of art. First impressions count and The Lyle has aced it when it comes to reflecting an air of effortless chic.

A glimmering brass panelled - and very well stocked - bar is the hero style statement in the space. It curves around the main run of the restaurant and on the night we visit is busy with couples sipping cocktails and

groups of friends sharing flutes of fizz.

The stylish overhaul of this historic building into a refined restaurant which looks like it could easily compete with some of London’s finest, is hugely impressive and if the food has the same impact then my guest and I are in for a very good evening.

On arrival we’re warmly greeted by our host and shown to our cosy corner table which is adorned with a crisp white linen cloth, gleaming glassware and shiny silver cutlery. Like the bar, the restaurant is full of contented diners happily chatting away, clinking glasses and clearly enjoying their culinary choices. It’s interesting to note that although The Lyle doesn’t boast a central location in town that clearly doesn’t matter given how busy the place is when we visit it.

As we settle into perusing our menus we’re introduced to our waitress for the evening. Ruby, who is also The Lyle’s Head of Front of House, is extremely cheery and clearly passionate about her role. She delights in telling us about the provenance and inspiration behind the menu and choices of wine she believes will complement certain dishes.

She even goes as far pouring us little measures so we can make our minds up.

To kick off proceedings Ruby suggests we order a serving of the restaurant’s fresh sourdough style bread which is baked daily and comes accompanied by a trio of signature butters (£4). In addition to a perfectly rounded quenelle of salted butter, there is also a delicious charred onion and parmesan offering and an intriguing sounding smoked beetroot and balsamic one. As we tear chunks of the warm bread and slather them with the different butters our taste buds immediately perk up. The onion one is sweet and fully flavoursome while the smoked

“Gary uses every bit of the scallop,” reveals Ruby and I can testify it works: the scallops are plump and pan fried to perfection and are further complemented by the smooth and sweet additional ingredients.

Who knew the humble roe could be so diverse?

Our mains arrive perfectly timed after we have scraped our plates clean and finished our glasses of Viognier. For the main event at The Lyle you can choose from the main A La Carte menu which like the starters has a good variety of vegetarian dishes too, or you can order from its Grill Menu or plump for one of its special Lyle Pies.

Ruby describes the Steak and Onion Suet Pudding which is elevated to fine dining status with a celeriac, pancetta and mushroom filling (£22) as being like a hug in a bowl. But after our generous starters and sourdough I fancy something a little lighter and my husband has already spied the filet steak and triple cooked truffle chips (£36) on the menu. He declares it one of the best steaks he has ever had and gives the feisty peppercorn sauce accompanying it a ten out of ten.

I like the sound of the roasted halibut which has been braised in butter lemon and curry salt

and comes with charred leeks, sweetcorn purée and an aromatic lobster sauce (£28).

But eventually I opt for the Gressingham duck which is pan seared and served perfectly pink with an indulgent and sticky confit leg croquette, baby fennel, fennel jam, samphire and a sweet yet fragrant lavender jus (£26). It is cooked to perfection, and every bite is a delight. On Ruby’s recommendation we opt for a side of tender stem broccoli to share which comes sprinkled with toasted almonds and is cooked al dente. We both go for a glass of red with our mains after Ruby has talked us through the various viticultural options.

The hearty malbec my husband has with his steak and the Sardinian red she suggests to partner the duck are both spot on.

By now the beautiful, mirrored bar is in full swing with waiters shaking up cocktails and artistically pouring them into all manner of chilled vessels.

Mojitos, Martinis and Old Fashioned are collected by numerous waiters and theatrically distributed to customers from trays.

The Lyle has been a fabulous dining experience. Amazing - much of it locally sourced – food; saturated in style and sophistication yet also hugely down to earth. The ideal recipe in my book for a restaurant of this quality and calibre’s success.

A tempting array of sweet and savoury treats is a delightful indulgence and we’re lucky enough to have lots of local establishments where we can enjoy a classic afternoon tea.

But, as SO magazine finds out, things are being taken to another level at One Warwick Park Hotel where they’re brewing up a delicious twist to this teatime tradition

rom quaint country tea rooms to rustic farm shops and luxury hotels, you’re never too far from a silver tiered stand of gooey cakes and freshly baked scones adorned with clotted cream and strawberry jam in and around Tunbridge Wells. But did you know there’s an establishment that likes to do something just a little bit different when it comes to your classic afternoon tea?

The four-star One Warwick Park Hotel, located on Chapel Place, is the place to be seen when it comes to enjoying teatime with a twist. For a couple of years now its kitchen team has been giving the traditional afternoon tea a little bit of a clever culinary twist by reinterpreting a number of its sweet treats and often adopting a different themed offering for each season.

They include smoked salmon, cream cheese and cucumber, roast beef and onion marmalade and egg mayonnaise and rocket. All the ingredients are ‘purposefully sourced locally,’ and served on a variety of breads all of which helps to make this decadent afternoon feast enjoyed in such pleasant surroundings such a triumph.

Delicious food and aesthetics aside, another key appeal of taking afternoon tea at One Warwick Park is that’s a very relaxed and incredibly sociable experience. You can take your time here, soak up the atmosphere and catch up very leisurely over tea and cake or perhaps with a glass of Prosecco. What could be better than that eh?

affternoon tea In the past the hotel’s talented pastry chefs have done mini stollens, mince pies and fruit cakes for Christmas and have even created Art Deco and summer holiday themes.

The Art Deco afternoon tea for example involved lots of elaborate garnishes and paper cut outs replicating the classic hallmarks of that era such as the flapper girls and speakeasy bars.

“There were a lot more savoury items on the Art Deco one,” explains a One Warwick Park spokesperson: “We had mini Caesar salads in shot glasses, devilled eggs and Jersey Royals stuffed with spring onions and baked cheddar and people loved it.”

With the Summer Holiday theme mini glazed donuts resembling inflatables, candyfloss as a little garnish on the cakes and caramelised white chocolate ‘sand’, chocolate shells and little sticks of rock were all cleverly crafted.

Due to the pandemic the creative patisserie team at One Warwick Park had to suspend doing these types of themed teas but they are still hopeful they can bring them back for special occasions such as Mother’s Day and Easter..

And the good news is the classic teas they now offer are just as enjoyable. As well as plump fruit scones and delicious homemade cakes, there are also lots of finger sandwiches

AFTERNOON TEA FACTS It dates back to the 19th century, when it’s believed that Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford, and other ladies of the upper social classes would get a little peckish ahead of dinner.

The solution was to have a cup of tea and a light snack mid-afternoon to keep hunger pangs at bay. This soon became part of a daily routine and the Duchess of Bedford began to invite friends to the house for refreshment.

Queen Victoria made it the more formal affair we enjoy today as, during her reign, tea service became increasingly grand. Etiquette played a big part, from the dress code to the way that tea was poured and stirred.

H

ow to live a healthy life at 60 and beyond. Writing this I am reminded of the wonderful book on The Blue Zones - the discovery of countries around the world where people live the longest and are the healthiest.

As you read through the book you notice that from Okinawa in Japan to Ikaria in Greece the nutritional habits are quite different. And so living a long and healthy life is not just about the food. The countries with the most centenarians have a few commonalities that run like a golden thread – but more on that later.

study of how our habits, behaviour, diet and environment effect our genes for better or worse. This is such wonderful news as we know that on a daily basis we can choose to improve our health.

SIX SECRETS TO A LONGER LIFE:

1. Avoid vegetable oils high in Omega 6: Sunflower oil, corn oil, soya oil. Ditch margarine and check food labels as these oils are often found in biscuits and confectionery. Omega 6 is linked to brain changes commonly found in people with Alzheimer’s and can promote inflammation and conditions like arthritis. The human brain is nearly 60% fat and saturated fat is a vital building block for brain cells. So instead consume health promoting butter from grass-fed cows, olive oil and coconut oil. If you are concerned about cholesterol and heart disease I recommend an insightful book called The Cholesterol Con by Dr Malcolm Kendrick.

2. Sleep well: The glymphatic system is a recently discovered clearance system that takes place in the brain when we sleep, clearing toxic waste. Poor glymphatic clearance is associated with impaired cognition and diabetes. If you struggle to sleep seek advice. It is one of the most important pillars of health.

3. Look after your heart: Magnesium keeps your heart rhythm healthy and it is a common deficiency. Subclinical magnesium deficiency is a principle driver of cardiovascular disease. The recommended RDA is between 300-350mg. It not only supports heart health but mood and sleep, is wonderful for restless legs, cramp, palpitations, anxiety and general well-being and energy.

4. Check your B2 levels: This is a common deficiency in the elderly and is an underestimated cause of cognitive decline and dementia. Other signs of this

It’s an absolute joy to be anticipating Spring this year without the same sense of foreboding which has hung over us all for the last two years. I’m pleased to say that not only are things looking brighter in general, but we are also making significant strides down at The Corn Exchange on The Pantiles to reanimate our own business.

We’re genuinely delighted to have been able to attract two of the leading names in the world of Art Deco antiques – and are currently fitting out new sales spaces for both David Hickmet and Jeroen Markies.

These two gentlemen have already built themselves enviable reputations, and are properly regarded as masters of their respective arts – catering for all your early to mid 20th century decorative and collectable needs !

Together, we’ll be able to offer a selection of bronze figurines which epitomised the elegance and

vivacity of the age - contemporary furniture, jewellery, decorative glass and artworks which is second to none, all here down on The Pantiles, ready to be taken away.

To celebrate this ‘great leap forward’ I’ll be personally hosting two talks on the subject of Art Deco on Friday the evening of Friday 4th March and a matinee performance on Saturday 5th March. The £20 admission includes wine, refreshments and posh nosh.

And if you’ve been cooped up in a tiny flat with a shared kitchen table/ workspace and still want to be with each other at the end of the day, then that’s true lockdown love.

Some couples flung together while furloughed however had a rude awakening after years or even decades of spending little time together. Such is the nature of married life when work, kids and different interests outside of family life take priority over marriage vows.

Others meanwhile discovered a powerful reconnection which strengthened in these difficult times.

Adversity makes us appreciate and value those we love all the more.

Whilst some marriages have strengthened, others have died.

Beginnings have been delayed and endings accelerated by the pandemic. Here are some tips for those figuring out how to have the best marriage possible and avoid becoming a statistic of the divorce epidemic which is sure to follow: TIME FOR LOVE ‘Busyness’ is a way of avoiding difficult issues and a distraction from problems in a relationship. It can be uncomfortable doing nothing with your partner when both of you are

used to rushing around and passing in the hall. Lockdowns made it much harder to make excuses for not having time for each other. Thriving relationships are those where time is spent maintaining and strengthening the bonds of security and commitment through open communication and prioritising ways to find pleasure in each other’s company.

TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THING? The strongest of relationships can be suffocating if there’s no breathing space. Too much dependence on one person is never a good thing.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder and a couple spending all their time together without other diversions are bound to get on each other’s nerves now and again.

Anyone who feels claustrophobic in a relationship will have a powerful urge to run away.

ADAPT AND SURVIVE Structure, order, routine and consistency are antidotes for stress and anxiety. When changes are global and out of our control, it’s easy to become overwhelmed and ‘aggy’. Forced confinement, the absence of a regulated working day and uncertainty about the future are unsettling to say the least. Whatever lifestyle changes have been

necessary, it helps to run daily life to a schedule of sorts, getting up at the same time, making plans, organising quality time together and keeping a diary. Now is a good time for a couple to share their hopes and dreams and maybe make some important changes in their life together.

FAMILY LIFE Small children, ageing parents and distant relatives are shared responsibilities within a marriage.

Division of labour requires collaboration and compromise as well as agreement about how to go about safeguarding family members and ensuring they are looked after properly. Couples who back each other up over family conflict and personality clashes will find other people’s dramas don’t have to be their crises.

MONEY TALKS Most people’s income has been impacted in some way by the pandemic. For some the threat of real hardship is a marriage-breaker, as harmful to wellbeing as the coronavirus. When there are two earners in a household, costs are shared and savings can be pooled when income is reduced. When debts are rising and bills unpaid, it takes a strong couple to ride it out until better times. Given that money is a major source of conflict in relationships, now is not the time to pretend the bank balance is healthy if it isn’t.

A LIFELONG COMMITMENT I’m going to declare a bias here.

Marriage is a wonderful, life enhancing thing when it works well.

Anyone coming to me about their marital problems will get my encouragement and support to put things right. Sadly, divorce is sometimes inevitable, particularly if one or both parties have emotionally checked out of the marriage.

Like all transactions, marriage has to have a point and a purpose for those concerned. It meets a complex mash up of emotional, economic, practical and cultural needs. One couple’s perfect marriage may be another couple’s nightmare. Shared beliefs, values and goals give couples the best chance of surviving decades of change through their lifetime together.

31B Hair Interview with local hair salon owner, Rod Prager - 31B, The Pantiles: We interviewed Rod, (owner & founder), to find out more about his established salon, his views on the hairdressing industry, post-pandemic, as well as an outlook for the next five years.

Rod has a wealth of experience from his long-standing career as a hairdresser. It had always been his vision to open his own hair salon and decided to fulfil this ambition back in 2016. Rod owns a renowned salon called 31B Hair which is situated in the heart of The Pantiles where he sympathetically renovated a beautiful example of one of the historic Victorian buildings. Full of character and charm alike, the hair salon has a warm and welcoming feel to it, an open-style café, (to serve clients their favourite refreshments), and carefully, handselected accessories throughout; this all adds to the welcoming ambience as soon as a client enters the front door.

1) How has the pandemic affected hairdressing?

“On many levels. Personally, I was lucky to keep my salon and I utilised my time effectively to expand my premises to two floors - to meet the ever-increasing requirements from our clients. We completed this whilst the salon was closed for business, and I applaud the other salon owners who did the same. Furthermore, I took the unique opportunity to take stock of my business e.g., reviewing protocols and new products, as well as evaluating each step in the client experience to assess where further improvements could be implemented to provide an overall better service to our clients.”

2) Why are less people entering the hairdressing industry and more people leaving?

“I think there are four factors to take into consideration: • Traditionally, hairdressing has a reputation for being low paid • Long hours of working are often required • Limited career progression • A lack of high-level training.

My concern is less about today, but about the future – the number of people starting hairdressing apprenticeships in England has halved between 2016 – 2020. * This level of skill gap will have a significant impact for the decades ahead.”

3) What can your industry do to change this?

“Improve all of the above and change the general ethos that we all work hard for so little, and we should accept it!

Of course, this is a paradigm shift, and it will take time, but there is much detail and individual care that goes into being a hairdresser; it really can feel like the most rewarding job, and as an industry we need to do better at attracting and retaining talent. As an individual salon, we have often had to compensate to improve on these factors ourselves to retain and develop our team.”

4) What does this mean to the hairdressing client?

“By making these changes, it will provide more choice, a better end-toend experience for clients, and ultimately the best outcome for hair quality.”

5) What is different about your approach to the industry and its workforce?

“Ultimately how my staff feel is how our clients feel, and having a happy culture is paramount to us. I ensure that my team are rewarded very well financially, I understand their work/life needs, as well as investing in training and development. I like to give my staff the flexibility they need, as well as the space to be creative in their work and make their own mark.”

6) Where do you see your business in 5 years?

“I plan to expand my business by opening another high-quality salon.

I am also working towards launching my own private, advanced Hair Academy where I will encourage young people to enter the industry, as well assist in upskilling hairdressers of any age and level. Hairdressing is my passion and I wish to share my experience and techniques with others.”

‘I love a challenge…”

In the last 18 months, Chloe Hannay, founder of Willow & Bert Interiors, has moved house, remarried, started a complete house renovation, had Covid and run a business while juggling a newly blended family that includes five teenagers and two dogs. Rachael Hale met up with her to discover how she manages it all

How would you describe the last year or so?

Exhausting and exhilarating!

It’s fantastic, but it can be a real challenge to organise everyone and everything they need while creating a new home for us all and running a business. I try to plan as much as possible, but there’s still an element of ‘winging it’. Especially when there’s a late night realisation that clean sports kit is required for the next morning!

Between yourself and your new husband Neil you have five teenagers, aged beween 13 and 16. Have they been involved in the decoration of their new home?

Definitely. This is the first time we’ve all lived together, so before we moved, I asked them to help me design their new bedrooms. I wanted to make sure they all felt at home so I asked them lots of questions – treating them like clients really, then made mood boards to give them an idea of what their rooms would look like. They really got into it when they saw how each design evolved around their choices.

Does being an interior designer makes it easier to decorate your own home?

No! I think it makes it harder.

Any tips for surviving a house renovation?

Try to be as organised as you can.

Pack up anything you don’t use every day, then ask everyone to keep as many of their belongings in their rooms as they can. Also, make sure you have somewhere warm to retreat to; it’s hard to relax when you’re cold. The last few months have also taught me to be flexible – as we know the building trade has been hard hit with delays due to Covid, Brexit and staff shortages so we’ve had to take a few deep breaths and go with the chaos for longer in order to get what we want for the house.

Why I love Tunbridge Wells CHLOE HANNAY Where’s your favourite place to eat?

I’ve yet to be disappointed by a Sunday roast at the Tunbridge Wells Hotel. The Pantiles are a great spot to stop and people watch.

Where’s your favourite place to stop for a drink?

The sun terrace at Mount Edgcumbe is always enjoyable.

And what about your favourite family day out?

It’s got to be the Ashdown Forest. It’s perfect for letting off steam, and there’s so much space up there; everyone can go their own way, and it never feels crowded. Willow, our black lab who inspired my company name, loves it!

You recently worked with local entrepreneur Jo Wimble Groves, TV presenter and interiors expert Sophie Robinson and Instagrammer Kate WatsonSmyth of ‘Mad About The House’, how did these projects come about?

No way! I love a challenge and business is booming. I work as a soft furnishings consultant for several other interior designers and also have other client renovation projects of my own on the go. Our house renovation is ongoing and I’m also giving my website a complete makeover. My business has changed so much since I started and, even though I

naturally - we’re school mums who got talking. She asked me for some help with her sitting room and I think it’s safe to say I got her to push her boundaries on colour and design, but everything is still totally ‘her’. We’re now doing a few more bits around her home.

With Sophie, it was a case of me taking a massive gamble and throwing my hat into the ring.

Something I would never normally do, but Sophie put a photo on Instagram mentioning that she’d like to do something with her curtains, and I commented saying I could help her, and she said ‘OK’. It was a real pinch-me moment, and then Kate saw what I had done for Sophie, and it went from there…

ebruary is a great time to be making plans for your garden. After two years of working from home and staycations we all appreciate just how lucky we are if we have a little green patch surrounding our home. The peace, privacy and feeling of wellbeing that come from appreciation of and relaxation in the garden is priceless.

A recent YouGov poll also tried to put a value on it finding that a quarter of British house buyers are now seeking outside space after the pandemic.

So how can we capitalise on our asset and what can we all do to make this a more pleasurable and healthy space? Well now is the perfect time to have a think about your garden and how you want to use it while the weather is still cold and you can’t get out into it that much.

So, from the comfort of your own chair why not first consider the picture your outside space creates with a particular focus on the combination of both hard and soft landscaping? Too much hard landscaping and it will feel cold and unwelcoming. Therefore try and combine seating and entertainment surfaces with planting that will help evoke a more comforting and relaxed environment. A small pergola, or archway can help define an area and create a calm space. A cedar corner bench can act as a focal point and provide a refuge to sit and reflect.

USE PLANTING THAT HELPS STIMULATE THE SENSES

Feature plants that have aromas; such as Jasmine, roses or lavender. Or why not consider some plants that move and create sounds; like oriental grasses, or bamboo as they rustle in gentle breezes. Trees that help create dappled light at certain times of the day or display amazing colours as the seasons change: Himalayan Birches cast fantastic shadow detail on terrace surfaces, Liquidambars reflect the most incredible autumn leaf colours while the Catalpa leaf, is almost fluorescent green against a vivid blue sky.

You should also think about the layout of the garden; how your eye is led through it, and how different areas are linked together. Take a look at our sketch of a typical small town garden space (8 x 8m). Try and

The 25hours Dubai One Central sets a new standard for boutique stays in the UAE’s shining emirate, says Sarah Marshall lobby to dainty handmade dioramas in lifts, artworks are displayed all over the hotel. Look out for the cloud-covered globe spinning in the lobby. It was designed by Myneandyours, a muralist whose fluffy motifs can be found across town.

Best known for their fun-loving, offbeat hotels found in major cities across Europe, the 25hours brand has launched in Dubai with a hotel promising to blow the sparkly brass taps off the UAE’s signature five-stars.

Close to the Dubai World Trade Centre and in view of the longawaited Museum Of The Future, it’s well located for work and play, with a host of features designed to attract a new generation of digital nomads.

WHAT’S THE VIBE?

Honouring the art of the hakawati (an Arabian storyteller), every nook, corner and shelf-space of this talkingpoint property has a tale to tell. It’s impossible to walk far without being distracted by a retro ghetto blaster, a gramophone or vintage toy car. A mishmash of antiques, kitsch bric-abrac and old heirlooms, showpieces were sourced by staff from junk and second-hand stores across Dubai.

But even though there are 434 guest rooms in the building, nothing feels mass produced.

Each floor represents an era in Dubai’s history; mine was dedicated to the Bedouin, with sand-coloured carpets and brass trinkets dangling from the walls.

A tangle of looping highways and buildings so tall they block out the sun, this isn’t the easiest city to navigate.

But the staff at 25hours are on hand to help. Once the concierge team have pinpointed recommendations on a map, guests can borrow a power pack to ensure mobiles never run flat.

A fleet of Minis parked outside can be loaned for four hours per stay (sometimes more, depending on availability) while a selection of Berlinbuilt Schindelhauer bikes chained to railings around the property (and even in some suites) are available for those who dare to explore on two wheels.

If you fancy a creative night in, a travelling trunk containing a podcast recording booth can be delivered to your room. Alternatively, indulge in some good old-fashioned reading by picking up one of the 10,000 books displayed on shelves, in grocery barrows or around the lobby’s Fountain of Tales.

ROOMS ARE FOR MORE THAN SLEEPING

Yes, the beds will swallow you whole, making it impossible to leave – but pillows and duvets aren’t the only in-room indulgence. A macramé swing took centre stage in mine, along with a very comfortable desk with plenty of USB ports. Far less practical but infinitely entertaining was an analogue phone in the loo.

Faithful to the destination, a copy of the Quran and a prayer mat can be found in the wardrobe, while a street art motif of a compass on the ceiling shows which way is east.

THE PARTY SUITE WILL MAKE YOU SHEIKH, RATTLE AND ROLL

Nowhere does decadence better than Dubai, as demonstrated by the penthouse Hakawaki Suite at 25hours.

Large enough to host a DJ booth and a dance floor, it’s playfully OTT. The star feature is a triple sheikh-sized bed with a bespoke single duvet, complemented by a bathroom with two side-by-side roll-top tubs. A secret staircase leads to two further bedrooms – great for nannies or a clandestine rendezvous.

from concrete and steel, the plantfilled top floor of 25hours is an exotic hideaway in the sky. Several wooden pods feature the first mixed gender saunas in Dubai, while a pool with sunbeds is a place to soak up urban views and sun.

Get ready for the evening with a trip to the spa, a workout in the semi open-air gym or a new hair do with celeb hairdresser Wassim Steve.

Based on a sister venue overlooking Berlin Zoo, the Monkey Bar serves fabulous drinks in a jungle of fake plants, with a view overlooking the yetto-open Museum of the Future.

But if you prefer arts and crafts to cocktails and craft beers, head downstairs to a dedicated pottery studio, where classes (with wine) are held. Stop at the Analogue Circus to spin one of 500 vinyl LPs on a selection of decks, or indulge in Eighties cassette classics at a Walkman carousel.

A selection of cool co-working spaces and Zoom booths make logging on less of a chore. One meeting room even comes with a sandpit for those worried about missing precious time at the beach.

WHAT’S IT LIKE TO DRIVE?

Refinement reigns supreme in the Bentayga, just as it did in the previous version. At speed, it’s gloriously quiet – sitting in the cabin on the motorway, you feel perfectly secluded from the outside world as it whisks past the window. There isn’t too much engine noise intrusion, either. That V8 engine remains largely muted at cruising speed and only makes its presence known when you accelerate hard.

But do just that and you’ll be rewarded with some fearsomely impressive performance. Given its size, the way the Bentayga shifts is quite remarkable, but it does so in a very composed, refined way. The well-weighted steering backs this up too, while the smooth-shifting automatic gearbox matches the package perfectly. The ride quality is also excellent – it’s particularly amazing given that the car rides on huge 21-inch alloy wheels.

HOW DOES IT LOOK?

ENGINE: Twinturbocharged V8

the Bentayga. It’s instantly recognisable as belonging to the brand, particularly thanks to the front-end design. This refresh has only helped things further, with the oval-shaped rear lights in particular giving the Bentayga a sleeker appearance.

It’s certainly not a car for shrinking violets, mind you, as its big, imposing styling is hard to miss wherever it goes. That said, in classier dark shades like green and red, the Bentayga can toe the line between over-the-top and understated nicely.

BENTLEY BENTAYGA Bentley has updated its Bentayga – but have the tweaks elevated the experience even further? Jack Evans finds out

WHAT IS IT?

The luxury SUV has become a mainstay of many car makers’ lineups. Roll back a few years and it was practically unthinkable that companies like Bentley would introduce an SUV – and yet here we are, with the Bentayga residing as one of the firm’s most popular models.

It’s now been updated, bringing a host of refinements to make it even more, well, refined. But with a variety of new rivals on the scene, can the big, bad Bentayga stay at the top of the food chain?

WHAT’S NEW?

From the outside, you might not think an awful lot has changed. Sure, the rear lights are quite a bit different to the previous model, but the Bentayga’s large size and huge onroad presence continue undiminished – though it’s now a little wider and the bonnet is a touch higher up.

replacing an older and less userfriendly display. Other changes include USB-C charging ports and the rear seats, which have the option to be cooled as well as heated, boosting the Bentayga’s comfort levels even further.

WHAT’S UNDER THE BONNET?

There are a number of powertrain options available with the Bentayga – including a plug-in hybrid – but today we’re looking at the V8powered version. It’s a petrol 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged unit kicking out a healthy 542bhp and 770Nm of torque, driven to all four wheels via an eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox.

Bentley claims it’ll power the Bentayga from 0-60mph in just 4.4 seconds before motoring on to a top speed of 180mph.

There’s a large 85-litre fuel tank and you’ll need it, as with a claimed consumption of 21.2mpg on a good day, the Bentayga has a predictably voracious appetite for fuel.

Sitting in the cabin, you’re able to appreciate the level of craftsmanship that Bentley offers. It feels like a noticeable improvement on the old Bentayga too, with the new screen giving it a far more futuristic feel inside. That said, the basics are covered off nicely – the seats are well-padded and comfortable, while the seating position offers plenty of adjustability. Those in the rear are well catered for in terms of leg and headroom, so you’re not going to feel short-changed by sitting in the back.

In terms of boot space, five-seater Bentayga models bring 484 litres of load area while four-seater versions bring a slightly smaller area of 392 litres.

WHAT’S THE SPEC LIKE?

As mentioned, it’s the Bentayga’s on-board technology that has made a real jump. So we’ve now got a crystal-clear 10.9-inch touchscreen display in the middle, which runs the latest software to make it quicker to function. There’s also Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to make mirroring your smartphone on the display easier. The basic operation of the system is easy enough though not the most intuitive available today. That said, it’s quick and responsive.

Our car came with a variety of other options, including extra mood lighting and a ‘Naim for Bentley’ premium audio system. Despite being expensive at £6,660, it’s well worth adding considering the quality of the sound it creates. Also, given that our test car came in at well over £149,000, it feels like a relative drop in the ocean.

VERDICT

This revised Bentayga succeeds in showing just why it’s proving so popular. The fundamentals remain unchanged; it’s still great to drive, effortless over long distances, and supremely comfortable for both driver and passengers. The V8 engine continues to be a great fit for the Bentayga too – though we reckon many buyers will be tempted by the new plug-in hybrid.

With these small but important improvements, we can only see the Bentayga’s popularity being extended even further.
