A lot has changed over the past eight years, but one fixture that’s been consistent is the presence of SO magazine. We launched our Tunbridge Wells edition in April 2008, and this

TALKING POINT The story everyone’s been discussing this month…

PRIMARK POTENTIAL Following the sad news that BHS is due to close its doors after the company went into administration earlier this year and no buyer was found, attention has turned to which retailer could be lined up to occupy the site.

Residents of Tunbridge Wells took to social media to express their desires for the next outlet to take over the premises, with many naming clothing retailers such as H&M and Zara. However, there was also strong support for a Primark to open – and it seems that if reports are to be believed, some locals’ wishes could be about to be realised.

When BHS went into administration, M&G Real Estate who own the Tunbridge Wells unit, said they were ‘working with other retailers’ who

had shown an interest in occupying any one of the 12 stores within their portfolio. Now, sources claim that Primark has made an offer – outbidding Wilko in the process.

Wilko is due to open in the previous HMV unit in Royal Victoria Place this August, but they were said to have expressed an interest in one floor of the larger BHS site instead. However, according to a source, “Wilko looked into the BHS site as soon as it was announced the company had gone into administration, as one floor would have been much better than the old HMV site they have at present. Primark, though, had been eyeing the site for a while and had made an offer that couldn’t be refused.”

Enjoy historical entertainment and a thrilling jousting tournament at Hever Castle’s Medieval Weekend taking place on July 23 and 24.

BODY CAST SCULPTOR LOUISE GIBLIN at SEEART For this exhibition, SEEArt proudly gathers together international artist Louise Giblin's sculptures, relief bronzes and drawings in the largest comprehensive gathering of her two and three-dimensional work anywhere in the world. Several new pieces have never been seen before while several others have not been previously exhibited in a gallery in England.

Born in 1963, Louise is a Member of the Royal British Society of Sculptors. She studied Sculpture BA Honours at Brighton plus History and Theory of Modern Art M.A. at Chelsea, London. Her tutors included Sir Antony Gormley.

As a body cast sculptor, Louise casts many pieces from living models. She then produces a body part or head copy of her model in clay and applies detailed imagery, often biographical, to the surface. This is fired in a kiln then moulded and reproduced in bronze or other media. Her body cast models include many celebrated Olympians, politicians, musicians, dancers, petrol heads, war veterans and pregnant women. She also works from imagination, creating smaller scale, delectable and sensual pieces inspired by literature, historical studies, history of art studies and life experiences.

Louise's sculpture and drawings have exhibited in London, across the UK, in the US and Asia. Her most widely reported solo exhibitions were 'England and Beyond' Hong Kong 2010, 'Body Casting Olympians' London 2012, 'Living Legends' and 'Lest We Forget' London 2014 and Florence Biennale 2015 where she received an international 'Lorenzo II Magnifico' award for sculpture. In April 2016 she was invited to represent UK in the International Artist Grand Prize Competition in ARTaipei Fair,Asia.

Louise is working on larger scale pieces for outdoor, especially garden, sites and is casting veterans of post-1914 wars for exhibition from 2018. Louise lives and works in East Sussex. !ii

THE UNSOCIAL NETWORK

Why are we all so afraid of bumping into acquaintances, wonders Agatha from Tunbridge Wells THE OTHER DAY, I was happily strolling

along Tunbridge Wells High Street, when I spotted an old colleague in the distance.

‘Great!’ I thought to myself, ‘fantastic – an old friend! I wonder what news he has to share? I wonder how he is? And brilliant, someone to chat to, someone to add a little more joy to my otherwise uneventful day…’

Whilst all these positive thoughts were popping into my head I waved frantically in anticipation as we approached one another.

But, wait. Oh no. It happened again. Lo and behold, he ignored me. He actively pretended he hadn’t seen me. And no, it was not my imagination, I am not prone to paranoid episodes of self-doubt (although oh my god, maybe I am?!)

This happens to me on a regular basis.

Why are people so afraid? Is it me? Do I frighten people? And if so, why? I am not that horrifically unattractive, surely!

Because I was starting to become ever so slightly paranoid, I asked family and

(relatively normal) friends about this occurrence and they confirmed it – they too have fallen victim to this strange phenomenon. My father once spent an evening with an acquaintance; they shared a couple of beers and laughed and talked, a very pleasant evening I was told. A few days later he bumped into said acquaintance thinking they’d pick up where they left off… and yep, you’ve guessed it, he was promptly ignored. Catastrophe!

What does this all mean? Will we all end up as strangers wandering the streets ignoring one another? Surely a connection is something to hold on to?

Before you think it, I am a pleasant individual – I don’t spend hours harassing people for company, I have impeccable social skills and don’t need any more friends. My theory as I mentioned above is that people are afraid. What of, I am not quite sure, but you can see the fear in people’s eyes as they glance furtively left

and right desperate for something to hold their gaze while the threat of small talk passes them by.

Undoubtedly putting all that energy into ignoring someone would be better put to use… I don’t know, saving the planet, or therapy or just plain kindness? I wonder if this only happens in Tunbridge Wells, or if it is specific to Kent. Is it a social disease that is spreading and will one day overtake our world, just like smartphones have? In this modern era where people are more and more isolated and hide behind technology, surely the one thing that could save us from a lonely existence is human interaction?

Isn’t a little greeting or a simple smile worth it? I have so many questions and I’m afraid this rant fails to answer any of them. But next time you see that face you recognise, don’t look away – just look up, wave and say hello. But don’t wink. Winking is completely weird and inappropriate, and will probably isolate you further.

BACK IN THE DAY WE TAKE A LOOK AT HOW LIFE HAS CHANGED BOTH LOCALLY AND GLOBALLY OVER THE PAST DECADE This month we celebrate the 100th issue of SO Tunbridge Wells – our monthly magazine launched in April 2008, when the maxi dress dominated the fashion pages, and The Brew House hotel was still in its infancy. Fast forward eight years and a lot has changed, both within the town (just look at the Brew House’s glamorous replacement, One Warwick Park), but across the world too. And, of course, some things haven’t changed – but the less said about the cinema site the better…

TECHNOLOGY It’s hard to imagine a time before we did absolutely everything on our phones, but when SO began, smartphones were still relatively new. “This will change everything,” promised Steve Jobs when Apple launched the iPhone in 2007, a statement that quickly became evident.

Pre-iPhone, we were still typing on keypads, but following its release phones with touchscreens became ubiquitous. Apps were also unheard of until 2008, when Apple launched the App Store, and the rest is history.

Smartphones have become the fastest-selling gadgets in history, outselling personal computers four to one, and today around 50% of adults own one – a figure that is expected to rise to 80% by 2020.

Since the iPhone’s release, we’ve seen the successful creation of the smartwatch, the tablet and the e-reader – all technology we now take for granted, but which just a few years ago weren’t in existence.

SOCIAL MEDIA If you told us back in 2008 that we’d be taking pictures of avocado on toast and broadcasting them to the world, we’d probably have laughed – but eight years on, here we are.

In the past decade, social media has become a way of life – Facebook now sees 1.1billion monthly visitors, while social media via apps has taken off – since its launch in 2010, Instagram has become the go-to site for celebrities and draws in over 400million monthly users. That’s a lot of avocado pictures.

A

few weeks ago I was asked during a radio interview about what skirt length was appropriate for women to wear. This all stemmed from the fact that many women who reach a certain age, no longer felt comfortable wearing short hemlines but equally weren’t ready to ditch their minis and jump into what is perceived as the ‘old lady look’ territory. My answer was simple, and one that I give to all my clients, whatever their age – it’s not all about the hemline, it’s about the style, the fit, the look and how you wear it.

Unfortunately we live in a society of pre-conceptions where women are expected to dress a certain way to fit the norm. And as much as I agree that yes, there is a fine line between dressing appropriately and drawing the wrong kind of attention, I don’t believe there should be any strict rules as to how short your skirt or dress should be (obviously I would probably recommend staying away from the tight bandage mini bodycon dress to avoid the ‘Real Housewives’ look.)

If short is definitely not for you then consider the many chic alternatives that this summer and autumn collections have to offer.

There is a wide range of midi or over the knee pencil and A-line skirts to look out for, like this one (right) from Marks & Spencer for £45. Simply pair with an open toe heel and a tucked in blouse to create a dressed up work or evening look. If you are going to show off your pins, pair a bold mini with a contrasting top and white trainers for a cool, casual look. Sclerotherapy is a safe and highly effective procedure used to treat smaller to medium varicose veins by injecting a solution into the vein being treated.

THE SECRET DIARY OF A BRIDE TO BE This month, our bride is having serious invitation angst…

EVERYONE TOLD ME that when it got

to the inviting people part of the wedding planning process, things would get stressful.

Having experienced stress throughout every element of the co-ordinating thus far, I was dubious. Surely, sending a few cards out to our friends and family would be one of the easier tasks? It certainly couldn’t be worse than attempting to get jackets for a groom and seven groomsmen…could it?

Shortly after our engagement, we went on holiday to a place with no Wifi, so with just a notebook and pen to keep us amused (and a crossword puzzle book) we set about making a list of potential guests.

Feeing smug about how organised we were, we wrote down a list of our nearest and dearest, plus some further away and less dear for good measure, and left it at that. “We won’t be those people who just invite people because we’re expected to,” I said, confidently.

Then, we returned from our holiday, and the list was immediately altered – extra cousins needed to be included, certain family members weren’t speaking so we needed to choose which ones to invite, and divorcing friends needed to ensure they each had a plus one so that they

could upstage each other. Within days, all promises of not pandering to other people’s demands were lost.

Eventually, we whittled the list down to a reasonable level, and then set about working on the invites. Thankfully, to save me attempting any sort of crafting, a creative friend offered to design them for us, so together we came up with some ideas.

The invites arrived and I was incredibly excited. Suddenly, the wedding felt real.

Before we could send them out, we needed to complete our wedding website, which would house all the important information for guests, such as menu choices and travel directions. However, as we typed the venue’s postcode into the site, panic rose inside of me. I grabbed an invite out and… the postcode on every single one was wrong. The one printed on the invites was one letter out, and unfortunately directed guests to a different wedding venue, some ten minutes away from ours.

After crying for a while, I headed to WH Smith and bought some cardboard and nice pens, and armed with a bottle of Prosecco, myself and my fiancé set about writing out the invites, with an additional ‘postcode amendment’ card for every guest.

We were nearing midnight, and the end of the writing, when my fiancé suddenly sported the very same panicked look I’d had previously. “I think I’ve mixed these up,” he said. “I think the evening and day guest invites are all in one pile.”

After a few expletives left my mouth, I began opening every single envelope in the hopes we would spot the rogue invites.

Thankfully, after opening 20, we found the culprits. But this now meant we didn’t have enough envelopes, or evening invites.

The solution was to drink the rest of the Prosecco, then send the invites out in batches while we waited for more to be printed.

Angry and embarrassed, I vowed not to tell anyone about our series of unfortunate events – I couldn’t believe how something so simple could be so difficult. But then something reassuring happened – I received an invite to another wedding, and when I went to RSVP, I realised the bride’s name had been spelled wrong.

Suddenly, my postcode blunder didn’t seem so awful after all…

Next month, our bride is wondering what’s really in a name...

SOCIAL ROYAL OPENING The great unveiling of One Warwick Park, Tunbridge Wells’ prestigious new hotel took place last month, with 200 esteemed guests attending the launch celebration ahead of its official opening on July 1.

Cutting the ribbon to formally open the hotel were Harry Collins, the Queen’s personal jeweller since 2000 and Crown jeweller since 2007, and Kiaran MacDonald, Managing Director of The Savoy, London.

THE KING OF CARDS As we celebrate 100 issues of So Tunbridge Wells, this month we speak to local magician Adam Smith, who began his business around the same time, and has been leaving a trail of magic ever since…

I

grew up in Tunbridge Wells in the village of Rusthall, and went to St Paul’s Junior school and then on to Huntleys secondary school, before beginning work as a civil engineer in the telecoms division.

I always played practical jokes on friends and family members as a child and was always making people laugh, but it wasn’t anything to do with magic. My interest in magic started when a work colleague showed me a trick in my lunch break – at that point I had to know how it worked and I was hooked.

After my colleague showed me this trick, I started learning basic magic and loved how you could amaze and entertain people whilst having fun. I decided I wanted to make this a profession of mine, so I looked for a private teacher in sleight of hand magic and for two years I had lessons with him whilst doing my full time job.

My tutor was one of the top sleight of hand card specialists and a member of the Inner Magic circle. I had lessons every couple of months and was taught many sleights which I would have to go away, practise and not return until I had mastered them. All this was done with a standard deck of playing cards which I practised with for six hours per day, on the train to and from work, in my lunch hours and in the evenings when I got home.

I finally took the plunge and decided to become a full time magician around nine years ago, because at this point I was getting so many bookings which were hard to do whist working full time. My first steps in starting

the business was to get myself out there and be seen by as many people as I could. Most evenings I would go to bars, and restaurants to perform magic for people for free, then would be asked for a business card and from this, more and more bookings came about.

Since then, I’ve been kept busy – I now have a magic shop in Southborough which I run with my partner Jaclyn where I practise and learn magic daily, and we also run workshops for others to learn – my oldest customer is 76.

In the evenings and at weekends, I attend and perform at the events I have been booked for – last year I performed at 55 weddings, and I have entertained many celebrities, including for Kate Moss at her wedding, Jude Law, Boris Becker and Rio Ferdinand to name a few. I never get a day off of magic as friends and family ask me to perform new stuff all the time, but it doesn’t bother me as I’m doing what I love.

Since I started, magic has become more street orientated, which I think is great but I still love performing with a standard deck of cards. When it comes to learning new magic, a trick can take me from as little as ten minutes to as long as my new effect, which I have been working on for around two months now and there is still much more to learn before I perform this one. My new tricks are always tested out on my girlfriend Jaclyn and my biggest critics, our children. here has been a big change in my circumstances with the Cookery School. I have gone into a joint

venture with Hadlow Group; as everybody knows we have been struggling with getting enough apprentices in, so I approached Hadlow. I feel very strongly that we can bring something different to the table and Hadlow can bring the infrastructure and expertise that we need, plus many apprentices. This is a very exciting time in moving forward, and I am so looking forward to doing great things with them in the future. The school will not change on the outside – we will still be doing courses, corporate, all different events, and chefs’ tables. I do hope you will come and join us.

Crab mastered, we move on to the squid, which works effortlessly with the chilli and coriander garnish and means that each mouthful is an explosion of textures and tastes.

Lobster is the next pick, and this is cooked to perfection – the meat is tender, flavourful and, although I’m enjoying it on its own, I can also vouch for adding a splash of the bloody Mary ketchup to the mix – the tangy tomato taste adds a real kick.

The ketchup is also my hero sauce when accompanying the oysters, which are satisfyingly salty and rich. Adding a dash of the shallot vinegar and the ketchup really creates a taste sensation, and I almost have to fight my guest for the last one – luckily he obliges and lets me have it in exchange

The benefits of being a new school is that it presents a blank canvas upon which we are able to establish a clear, strong set of values that permeate through everything we do.

Not weighed down by expectations of alumni and parents who often are seeking a recreation of their own school experience, Claremont has been able to define clearly the values that guide us – attitude, aspiration and activism.

Parents choose the school not for what they perceive it has represented in the past but what it represents now. Equally, starting a school from scratch allows us to avoid the difficulties that can often be presented by dragging an organisation into the new world.

There are no vested interests to combat and no ‘we do it because we always have done it that way’ sorts of conversations. Students benefit from state of the art facilities and an educational philosophy drawn from, and guided by, the cumulative experience of the past.

Above all else, in a new independent establishment there is not the sense that the school is more important than the students – that there have been hundreds of similar students in the past and will be hundreds more in the future. At Claremont it really is the students, rather than the historic buildings and traditions, that define the character and values in the school.

First-time visitors to Rose Hill are usually taken aback by the fact that, despite being one of the oldest Prep Schools in the country, it is a modern, purpose-built school. It moved from its original site on the London Road in 1966 and hasn’t looked back since.

Our history is very important to us. Baden-Powell was a pupil in 1868 and we continue his tradition by having our own Cubs, Rainbows and Brownie packs. His name lends itself to one of the three houses in the school, the other two being Mackinnon, a Kent and England cricketer at the turn of the century, and Grange, a former Headmaster, who brought the school to its new site in Culverden Down.

Rose Hill has developed in harness with the social and economic changes that Tunbridge Wells has seen over nearly two centuries. This leaves an indelible mark of tradition – a word unpalatable to some, but one which we take very seriously: traditional courtesies, traditional community spirit, traditional manners, traditional hard work.

Children love tradition and, as the school has developed, we have been able to cherry-pick those traditions which support the ethos of the school, for example, attendance at the Remembrance Service in Tunbridge Wells every November.

Although now in a modern, technologically advanced environment, Rose Hill is able to blend the old and the new and we are proud to be a part of the rich history of Royal Tunbridge Wells.

QUEEN OF THE CASTLE Director of Chiddingstone Castle, Ali Ditzel gives us an insight into life inside this quintessential English property

Have you worked at any similar properties in the past?

No – this is my first foray into tourism. I initially came to help with the marketing and stayed!

How have you been preparing for the summer season?

The small team that runs Chiddingstone Castle is here throughout the year, keeping a close eye on the building and the museum collections of the late Denys Eyre Bower which are housed and on display here. We have a collections manager to do the latter, and she has prepared us for this season by getting a team of volunteers together to help clean, catalogue and conserve the 4,000 books that are in Denys Bower’s library, which is now open to the public. She has also prepared new exhibits for display in all of the main collections rooms – the remarkable collection of Japanese Samurai armour and lacquerware; the Ancient Egyptian antiquities; the Buddhist items; the paintings of the Stuart monarchs and the Jacobite memorabilia.

What tasks will you be undertaking around the property this July?

Maintaining the 35 acres of gardens and grounds at the castle is an ongoing undertaking. The beautiful herbaceous south border is bursting with new life and our unique conceptual garden – a

grass maze on an Ancient Egyptian theme, called the ‘Fields of Eternity’ – will be at its best in July.

What is your approach to the property, both in terms of preserving its heritage and moving forward?

In the last few years the castle has gone from strength to strength, both in terms of increasing visitor numbers and in caring for the building and the collections. We were extremely proud to be awarded full museum accreditation in 2013 – a rare achievement for a small country house museum, which proves that we are giving exemplary care to the historic collections, as well as using them as a tool to enhance the education of schools, the community and the general public. To raise muchneeded funds, we are also delighted to offer the castle as a unique, heritage wedding venue – and we have received county and national awards for doing just that!

Which original features still remain in the property?

Chiddingstone Castle has its origins in Tudor times, but having undergone many

alterations over many generations, it is now almost entirely a Victorian gothic folly – not a ‘castle’ in the true sense of the word! One fascinating feature is a section of the oak panelling in the grand great hall, which is said to have been created from part of Anne Boleyn’s bedhead. She, of course, grew up in our neighbouring heritage attraction, Hever Castle, and her father owned a house in the Tudor village of Chiddingstone too.

What is the biggest challenge at Chiddingstone?

As the castle is run as a charity with a remit is to look after the historic building and the remarkable collections and keep it all open for the nation to enjoy, the biggest challenge by far is finding the money to do just that. We receive no public funding for this and the income from visitors and weddings doesn’t really cover the costs.

Therefore we are constantly coming up with new and innovative ways to bring folk to the castle – this year we held our inaugural Chiddingstone Castle Literary Festival which was a huge success, bringing

What’s your favourite area or element of the property?

In the gardens, visitors should really spend some time enjoying the beautiful herbaceous south border which has recently been lovingly restored thanks to the hard work of our gardening staff and volunteers. Indoors, don’t miss the fascinating Streatfeild room (located on the first floor) which explains the history of the castle building from its creation to the present day. Also don’t miss seeing the exceptional Japanese lacquer ‘Chiddingstone casket’ before we loan it in September to the British Museum to enhance their Japanese galleries for the next two years.

Gabrielle Fagan reveals how, when it comes to decorating and accessorising your home, keeping it pure and simple is the way to go

Colour may be cool currently – but if you prefer to dance to a different décor tune, and yearn for light-filled, calm, easy-onthe-eye rooms, then a white palette’s the obvious choice. Ignore the ‘white is for wimps’ wisdom; that only the brave stylishly splash on fashionably bright shades and enjoy a technicolour world, while the rest of us scaredy-cats pale at the sight of colour charts and scurry back to the safety of neutrals. What this theory fails to recognise is the simple fact that white works

What’s not to like about a palette which makes spaces appear lighter and larger? And, with such a huge variety of shades on offer (yes, really!), from subtle and warm, to crisp and sharp, there’s bound to be at least one, or more, that suits. “White, combining all the colours of the visible spectrum, is a dramatic, affirmative choice, rather than a passive one,” declares Karen McCartney, champion of a white palette and co-author of White Rooms: Decorating with Style, Pattern and Colour.

“White creates the sense of a blank canvas, a fresh beginning upon which we can impose our decorative style,” she adds. “Light reflects off white; it bounces around and has the effect of lifting the spirits.

“And its credentials have been proven over time – white’s been used for generations and in many cultures, to symbolise honesty, purity, perfection and spirituality.” She firmly believes white has the power to ‘set rooms free’ and suits any style of home, from modernist to Moroccan interiors, country cottages to industrial lofts – examples of which all feature in the beautifully illustrated book.

“It may be, of course, that other factors are needed to make a white scheme work – textured neutrals against a soft white background, a hint of pink in the paint to tie in with a key decorative feature, or being clever about the way in which gloss and matt contrasts. There are all sorts of additions which can enhance a white space, whether it’s sheer white curtains or shutters at a window, or lighting, from natural light to LED.”

Bewildered by the vast array of white paint shades? Follow a few simple guidelines to ensure a white scheme works.

“Simple white reflects light and helps to make a space appear bigger, but can feel cold and impersonal,” says Marianne Shillingford, creative director at Dulux. “Try a combination of pure white and a warm off-white with added light-reflective properties, such as Absolute White and Morning Light from our Light & Space range.

“Layers of subtle neutrals make a different kind of impact on a room than deeper shades, but they’ll still make an impact. The creative use of light from floor to ceiling brings subtle shades to life at night too, and of course, you can add colour to a neutral room in accessories. “ WHITE WISDOM: When you’re not using much colour in the room, you need to excite the senses with texture. Use a velvety flat matt on walls and layers of sensuous fabrics on furniture, with warm, smooth wood flooring. Use tester pots and view in all lights before making a final paint choice.

“What’s so appealing about white is its great democracy.

It doesn’t discriminate between high architectural art and a warehouse interior, where garage paint can cover every surface, rendering ugly pipes, bricks and stained floorboards invisible,” says McCartney.

“White allows the eye to float over every surface, and the furnishings, art and objects to take centre stage. Patterned pastels, bold artworks, antiques, sculpture, designer pieces and found objects all work stylishly within the context of white.”

WHITE WISDOM: If a white open-plan room with large floor-to-ceiling windows is eye-wateringly bright, use tints to soften the effect. A touch of grey/brown for paint and a low-reflection flat wall and ceiling paint will help.

Interesting white objects in a group act as an eye-catching feature in a space.

“The joy of grouping white objects together is that while they may vary slightly in shade, this only adds to the interest they provide when displayed in a pleasing cluster,” says McCartney. “Pay particular attention to the shape, materials, height and placement of objects, to ensure that, whether they’re showcased in front of a dark or light wall, their form is easily defined.”
