After a rocky ride over the past 15 months due to the Covid crisis we thought it would be a good idea to get their steer on what they do and how they can help you make the most of your money. JAZZ HANDS Summer in Tunbridge Wells wouldn’t be complete without the weekly Jazz on the Pantiles.

Continuing throughout July, this year’s performances are socially distanced with entry only available by booking a table at one of the participating restaurants on the Georgian Colonnade.

Starting at 7pm to 10pm, you’re in for a magical musical evening at the bandstand with delicious food from some of the town’s best restaurants.

Restaurants taking part include The Tunbridge Wells Hotel,The Kirthon and La Casa Vecchia and entrance costs £5 per person.

KNIGHT IN SHINING ARMOUR Step back in time at Hever Castle with jousting events taking place throughout the summer, starting on July 10.

The Knights of Royal England will be performing stunts, falls and fights in an authentic arena complete with a Royal Box. The knights will compete for points to find this season’s ultimate champion. You can cheer on the competition from the medieval spectator stands, while keeping up with the jousting leader board throughout the season.

STEP BACK IN TIME On selected Saturdays or Sundays throughout the summer Penshurst Place will play host to the fabulous ladies of Tudor Legacies: The Queens of Henry VIII. They will be wandering the gardens throughout the day dressed as the extraordinary women who were married to King Henry VIII and visitors will have the chance to have a chat with the likes of Anne Boleyn, Catherine Parr and Anne of Cleves. FOODIE FESTIVAL The long-awaited Pub in the Pub is returning to Tunbridge Wells on July 9 to July 11.

Bringing chefs, music and food and drink producers together into a fantastic foodie festival it will be a must-visit experience.

Despite the extension of the lockdown restrictions which was announced last month, Pub in the Park have assured festival goers that extensive measures have been planned to ensure social distancing with extra space, management of queuing and pods in front of the stage.

Performances include Craig David and TS5, James Blunt, Beverley Knight, The Lightning Seeds and many more.

The festival is also throwing an evening exclusive to keyworkers to thank them for all their hard work during the pandemic.

With the summer holidays just around the corner it’s time to start planning your days out. This month’s top place to visit is Willows Bird of Prey Centre.

Director, Jodie Robertson takes Lottie Bulmer under her wing to show what the centre has to offer…

H

idden in the leafy Kent countryside not far from Knockholt, Willows is an interactive wildlife centre which among other animals, has 65 birds in its care.

It’s a family affair as director, Jodie explains walking me around six of the 22 acres the centre sits on.

There are six family members working at the centre and they worked through the lockdowns to reopen on April 12 along with government guidelines.

The centre supports the conservation of birds of prey, both at the centre and in the wild. They work to protect birds by raising awareness through their demonstrations about the problems that birds of prey face and how we can help them in the wild.

Jodie shares why the public awareness is needed: “We end up with a lot of rescue cases when people buy a bird then change their mind about it.

Beatlemania gets Trinity Theatre rocking this July.

BACK ON TRACK Spa Valley’s Summer Steam Up is taking place over the weekend of July 17 and July 18.

“When Harry Potter was released, we rescued a lot of owls – there’s no licensing for buying birds and we are one of the only countries which don’t have any regulations in place for buying them.”

During school holidays, Willows runs nine activities a day, starting at 10:30 in the morning. They are incredibly popular, and the last half term in June was fully booked.

Willows’ daily summer timetable includes a Birds of the Woods Demonstration, Hawk Talk, the Midday Demonstration and Owl Talk. Other experiences offered include Owl Encounter, Hawk Walk or an introduction to falconry.

Owl Encounter is available for ages eight and above. It’s a twohour experience where you get the chance to fly four birds. It’s really interactive and there is even the option for tea and cake after the experience.

recently taken on a new apprenticeship who is studying animal management, and Jodie says: “It’s fun! They get hands-on experience here which they wouldn’t get at college.”

As we come to the end of our visit, there is a display to visitors taking place with Meeka – a parrot who Jodie has had since he was 12 weeks old. His excitement to see Jodie when we approached shows how loved the birds in the centre’s care are.

Willows has also adapted to Covid regulations, as Jodie

“Willows offers lots of visitor experiences including owl encounters, a hawk walk and nature trails”

explained: “We’ve had to do a separate in and out and we have two lanes and hand sanitiser on entrance and exits. We’ve even looked into installing hand washing stations.”

The centre is only accessible when you book an experience which you will need to pre-book and pay for, and it takes about 40 minutes to walk around the outdoor nature trail.

fter a Covidenforced absence of nearly two years, the much-loved Tunbridge Wells community music festival Local & Live returns to its spiritual home in Calverley Grounds later this summer.

It will once again be free to attend and takes place over the August Bank Holiday Weekend from 27-30. In addition to bands playing live in Calverley Grounds over the first two days, there will also be live music

– yes you heard that right – at some of the town’s most favourite venues including The Forum on August 30.

Well over 100 acts will be involved in this year’s festival and audiences will be treated to an array of superb performances from the likes of Suncharmer, David Migden & The Twisted Roots, The Steffan James Band, Tom Williams, Cyrano, The Breretons, Alana Hazzard, Harry Whitty, Dull Knife, Steve Hewitt, Zoe Nicol, and many more.

MARIE WHITE How long have you been writing and performing and how would you describe your style and sound?

I started writing in my bedroom at about the age of 14. Nobody ever believes me, but you’ll have to just trust me when I say that I was terrible! Find my dad on Facebook for confirmation! I spent many years playing to anyone who would listen, whether that was in a pub or on the streets. I didn’t care, I just wanted to be heard. I would say that over the years there has always been a Tracey Chapman comparison to my sound (which I’m flattered by!) but now I’m trying to find the perfect balance of using production to emphasise the song as well as my voice.

Could you name some of your main music influences and artists you aspire to?

I think it’s always tempting to jump to the big names, but in all honesty my main influences are definitely my parents. We might not always agree on what we do and don’t like, but I’ve grown up with my dad blaring incredible artists and bands like ELO, Rod Stewart and Elton John out of the car speakers! I don’t think you can spend your whole childhood listening to timeless music and not be influenced somewhere down the line. My mum comes from the Soul and Funk world, so I would

say that hearing voices like Luther Vandross and Stevie Wonder has always encouraged me to use my voice in ways that other people don’t.

You have achieved so much in your career so far including winning the Glastonbury Emerging artist's award in 2019 leading to you appearing on the Pyramid stage! Can you share some memories from that experience?

I’m still overwhelmed by that whole experience but my favourite show from that weekend was the BBC introducing stage. I was absolutely terrified, mainly because they were airing the show on iplayer, and I forgot to look at the audience for our entire set! As we finished the last song I looked up and everybody was getting ready to leave. I turned to my friend Em who had her phone out to film and she said to me “They’re all standing up for you! ” As you can imagine, a standing ovation at the biggest festival in the world is enough to send anybody over the edge!

Do you have any plans for a new single, EP or album release in the next 12 months?

I have many plans, but you’ll have to wait a little bit longer to find out!

How are you feeling ahead of your headline show in Calverley Grounds for LocaL & Live and what can audiences expect from Marie White?

The audience can expect an hour of energy, laughter, many tears, and lots of dancing! Take that description as you will, but I can assure you that August 29 will be a night to remember!

Where can people find you online?

Find me @mariewhitemusic on all socials, although I’m particularly fond of “The Instagram” as I call it!

How did you become to be known as The Orange Circus?

My grandmother is from a small town in Virginia USA called Orange and since the music was originally inspired by Bluegrass and Appalachian music it was a tribute to her. The Circus part is the idea of a travelling group and our often chaotic live shows!

Can you share what gives The Orange Circus a close connection to the town?

I grew up in London and Tunbridge Wells and Raven our fiddle player grew up in Sevenoaks. In the band’s earliest days we played all over the South East in pubs and small venues. We have performed at The Tunbridge Wells Forum many times over the years as well as venues such as The Grey Lady and Trinity Theatre.

How would you describe the style and sound of The Orange Circus?

We’re a blend of Bluegrass, Folk and country music and we love to bring a lot of energy and feel good to our music. We’re inspired by so many bands. My personal top three are: Old Crow Medicine Show, The Lumineers and Bob Dylan.

You have achieved so much in your career including being championed by Radio 2's Bob Harris. Tell us about that experience with 'Whispering Bob'….

It was a beautiful sunny day, and Bob and his family were all super friendly and welcoming to us. That certainly helped when it came time to play live for his show and get the good vibes and sounds down.

Do you have any plans for a new single, EP or album release in the next 12 months?

We have a new single and video Sit Down by the Fire coming out this month taken from our most recent album Whistle in the Dawn.

We’re also currently rehearsing new material for our third album which we may release as three EPs. How are you feeling ahead of your headline show in Calverley Grounds for Local & Live?

We are so excited as the band has had a long and adventurous journey to headline status. All of our toes and fingers are crossed everything will go ahead. Audiences can expect plenty of energy and feel good music….

o the uninitiated, the world of investment management and financial planning can often be confusing and complicated, but wealth management company Charles Stanley’s mission is to ensure it is not only wholly transparent but also tailor-made for each one of its many clients.

And given they are one of the oldest firms on the London Stock Exchange and have numerous offices around the country, including one on Mount Ephraim Road here in Tunbridge

Wells, they certainly know a thing or two when it comes to investing wisely.

Established in Sheffield in 1792, the firm is one of the oldest on the London Stock Exchange. Over its 200-year history Charles Stanley has provided a variety of important financial services to its clients, who range from public trusts and national charities to financial advisers and institutions. But its principal focus is, and always has been, the provision of a high-quality personal service to its private clients. Today its investment

management services support individuals looking to invest or manage their money professionally. This could be for property, private education or for a self-invested personal pension or SIPP as it is known in the industry.

The office will be celebrating its 20th anniversary at the end of this year. And as Katie is a founding member of the original Charles Stanley team located here, she says she and the team are very much looking forward to celebrating when they can.

“It will probably be more likely that we mark the anniversary in 2022 given the current situation we are in,” Katie says, referring to the pandemic.

Two decades ago she was working at another wealth management firm in the town when she was asked by Charles Stanley HQ to open an office in Tunbridge Wells. Mark was working at Shaw & Co in Crowborough before he moved over when it merged with Charles Stanley in 2004 and Jon came onboard eight years ago.

Mark explains Charles Stanley’s unique way of doing business further: “Some firms have a client relationship manager who faces the client but then there’s another person working in an office in London who is actually doing the investing. We actually talk to our clients as we are the people investing their money so they really do see the whites of our eyes. We are not anonymous fund managers based up in London. We also are fee only and no commission – it’s all very transparent.”

made and transparent approach their professional hallmark.

“We make it fairly clear that we as individuals are the ones making the decisions and that it is our responsibility. We are different as it is not some centralised approach. We mostly know who is on the end of the phone when they call us.”

Jon says there are many reasons why people choose to invest including generating funds for education, property or travelling - or simply to secure a more buoyant financial future but things are changing in how this has been traditionally done.

“Things seem to be becoming far more centralised with relationship managers and such because there are potential cost savings by doing this. But it’s debatable whether it’s the best outcome for the client.”

“Ultimately it’s a people business and clients need to have confidence in you and your abilities. They really are placing their trust in you.”

This way of doing business for clients became even more important when the first lockdown was announced.

“What you must consider is it’s not just the world of finance that turned upside down when the pandemic struck, the whole world did,” remarks Katie. “I think everyone was quite emotional because lockdown had all of its own restrictions on us all personally as well as professionally, so I think clients did look to us for guidance and support through that.”

Katie reveals that she and her Charles Stanley colleagues went the extra mile by calling certain people who they knew might be vulnerable.

“I remember just before the Easter weekend looking at my clients’ list thinking who would be at home by themselves. Charles Stanley also asked staff members to visit vulnerable clients if they lived nearby.”

Jon also notes that it wasn’t unusual for the Charles Stanley team to offer to go shopping during the lockdowns.

“Demographically we have clients who tend to be older so we need considerable soft skills too. Very often it’s not about what their portfolio is doing, especially in the pandemic. During that time you’d talk to a client and they might not have spoken to someone all week.

“So you chat about what you need to in terms of their investments then afterwards you’ll have a friendly chat about all sorts of things like the grandchildren or their dog.”

But it wasn’t just Charles Stanley Investment Managers ensuring their clients were looked out for, the company also did that for their employees. Not something you would traditionally equate with the cut and thrust of the world of finance.

“We have to make sure people are OK at home. If they

haven’t taken enough holiday then they need to.”

Katie adds that Charles Stanley offered lots of online support too – both personal as well as professional development. “They reached out to staff who were experiencing poor sleep or stress or anxiety and put on specific lunchtime or after work webinars. They did online fitness and launched a book club.”

Has that always been the Charles Stanley ethos I ask her? “They have always been supportive in a quiet way but it came out more much in lockdown. I know teams in London would have a virtual drinks after work to keep everyone connected.”

And when it came to working from home the trio all agree that Charles Stanley got that right.

“They were very light footed in terms of setting things up remotely,” continues Katie.

“Most of us had home offices anyway but for the ones who didn’t they set them up very quickly.”

“Within about 10 days we had almost all staff working from home,” adds Jon. “It was relatively seamless and our clients weren’t affected at all,” Mark observes before adding that unlike many

others, their business hasn’t been dramatically affected by the coronavirus.

“We haven’t been impacted badly by the pandemic – it’s actually been good for other reasons such as the technology and online markets - they have boomed.

“Companies offering home delivery definitely benefited from people going online to shop, catapulting themselves in a very short space of time to where they would have been three or four years down the line if the pandemic hadn’t happened. If you’ve invested in American markets or tech then you’ve done really well.”

Mark explains that when the first lockdown happened the market fell by more than 30% but by the end of the year it was higher than it was before that point.

“But of course, you have to be investing in the right areas.

If you’ve put money into airlines or the travel industry then clearly these have not done well due to Covid 19.”

Jon adds: “It’s worth saying that during that period our advice was for clients to hold their nerve and most of them

did. When it comes to making money you have to have patience and to also have seen various market movements and cycles.

“If you have worked with someone for a long time and looked after their money for 20 years you know them pretty well.”

And it’s that trust, that personal and unique touch that really is the secret to Charles Stanley’s ongoing success.

“Personal service is one of the pillars of what we offer,” confirms Jon. “We’ve always done that to be honest. That hasn’t changed for us in my entire career here,” adds Katie.

“That’s definitely what we’re about but the pandemic has shone even more of a spotlight on what we do here,” states Mark.

Discretion is another obvious pillar but can the trio give SO readers an idea of what a typical starting point sum of investment would be?

“For our discretionary service we usually start at a quarter of a million,” Jon discloses. “But it’s fair to say

that if someone calls us regarding a smaller amount we wouldn’t just brush them off. We offer a variety of different services and solutions for all levels of wealth. With our DIY investment platform, Charles Stanley Direct, clients can invest as little as £50 per month for example.”

Katie, a former President of the South East branch of the CISI Financial Services Body, adds that the office has some clients who actively wanted to be represented locally instead of in the capital.

“The whole ‘support local’ movement was very much a part of lockdown and I think that’s filtering through in many ways in people’s lives.

Over the past year we have had some clients who wanted to switch their investments to local investment managers instead of being in London. I think the importance of having someone they know and trust as opposed to a computer screen or a telephone number means more to them.”

Mark comments that experience is also vital for a successful wealth management company.

“It is a key thing. We’ve been around a fair few decades and that does count.” The team recently totted up their accumulative years in the world of finance and it amounted to over 240.

“At times we have to deal with some very delicate situations,” Katie adds.

“You need to know how to adapt and be there to listen and support people through both tough and happy times.

We are very well supported by our own support staff who really know our clients too and are used to speaking to them. It really is a team effort.”

The inaugural TW Fringe has just launched and promises a plethora of exciting live entertainment at various venues across town until July 18. Its founder Debbie King (below) tells SO magazine all about the inspiration for it and what’s on where…

So what is TW Fringe all about?

It is an exciting new two-week community event in Tunbridge Wells to get people on stage and safely back into many of our incredible local businesses.

It’s also helping to fundraise for charity isn’t it?

Yes it’ll help to raise money and awareness for two local organisations: Fegans and Taylor Made Dreams. We are also supporting the Pickering Cancer Drop-In Centre and West Kent Mind. Our main aim is to bring people together and so far it’s certainly doing that!

What gave you the idea to do this particular event?

Tunbridge Wells has such a variety of businesses, venues and people that 18 | July 2021 | SO Magazine

make it the perfect location for a ‘fringe’ style event. Lots of our team have been involved with the Edinburgh Fringe, the largest arts festival in the world, and have experienced the incredible atmosphere and benefits of this event, which almost doubles the population of Edinburgh for the whole month of August.

So Edinburgh Festival inspired you then?

Yes and we wanted to help Tunbridge Wells reap similar benefits. The arts played such a huge important part in keeping everyone entertained (and sane!) during the various lockdowns but it has suffered hugely too and so we wanted to revitalise and engage the community as restrictions start to ease.

Can you tell us what the TW Fringe 2021 programme includes?

The festival has a little bit of everything including performance, comedy, workshops, art, storytelling, drama, dance, theatre, spoken word, live music and physical theatre - all suitable for every age. We have venues all over town including coffee shops, churches, pubs, restaurants, parks, a tattoo parlour and even a cave!

The TW Fringe is for everyone and anyone! We hope it will bring our local community safely back together whilst bringing people into our town to engage with our incredible local businesses.

Why did you feel it was important to it put on for the town?

Tunbridge Wells is a vibrant place full of creatives, and the TW Fringe is an incredible opportunity to bring all the different avenues together. We are so excited to be working with the organisers of other TW festivals to engage all parts of our creative local community. Covid has been really hard and a lot of people have been quite isolated so this festival is a safe way of enabling lots of different people with different skill sets to work together in order to create a real communal buzz.

Has anything been cancelled due to the government postponing the lifting of all restrictions?

Yes sadly we have had to adapt and postpone some of our events including our BBC Radio Kent and The Forum’s ‘Access All Areas’ night. Denny’s Fest, which is in aid of the late barber of Castle Street has been pushed back to July 25 and 26 July but our main priority is everyone’s safety. So we will

Can you sum up the essence of TW Fringe and what people will enjoy most about it?

The TW Fringe is all about our community. Coming out of a period that has been incredibly hard we think it is important that we support each other and rebuild it.

Local comedian Aimee Cooper (below) is staging a number of stand up gigs as part of TW Fringe. Here the popular funny girl tells us how she got into comedy and why she loves peforming so much “I started doing stand-up comedy about two years ago. BK (before kids) I was an actor, so the performance element has always been there but the leap to standing on stage in front of an audience abd my only job is to make them laugh was a very tough learning curve. The ‘why’ I got into comedy is a baffling one - even to myself. I had been filming short sketches and posting them online and whilst I got that dopamine hit of a virtual positive reaction, I really yearned to be back in a live atmosphere with an audience.

“I love creating characters; their mannerisms, their world and working out what their story is. People watching is my favourite thing to do and I’ve actually really missed that over lockdown.

“I met TW Fringe organiser Debbie King a few years ago at one of her singing workshops, so when I saw that she’d launched the TW Fringe I just shamelessly stalked and harassed her and pleaded to get involved! I’m doing various different shows: they are going to be such fun, with loads of variety and something for everyone. I’ll be presenting acts from across the comedy and cabaret circuit and curating a really incredible bill of entertainment. I cannot wait!”

ike many charities West Kent Mind has suffered enormously due to the impact the coronavirus has had on its fundraising efforts over the past 15 months.

Reflecting the plight of many other charities up and down the country, the mental health organisation West Kent Mind is usually reliant on doing everything from fun runs and black-tie balls to cake sales and sporting challenges in order to raise vital funds.

But all of these involve people – and plenty of them. So when lockdowns over the past year and a half put a stop to all that social interaction and fundraising, charitable foundations like West Kent Mind, which supports people with anxiety, depression and various other mental health issues, saw a dramatic drain on its resources.

Yet despite these problems the charity is still determined to keep helping others.

“We are wholly committed to putting the support in place for those people that need our help the most,” states the charity’s CEO Stevie Rice who has been in charge for the past two years.

“We know that Covid-19 has impacted so many of us in many different ways, and our mental health has taken a real hit.

We want people to know that we are here for them.

“Our ambitions are to enable people to have the tools and resources to support themselves and each other to have better mental health.”

Stevie Rice is Chief Executive at West Kent Mind. Here she tells Eileen Leahy all about her role at the mental health charity and why it would love your support for its upcoming virtual fundraising auction… the issue of not being able to run their usual variety of fundraising projects, Stevie and her team had to think of ways they could still raise money and awareness of the work they do.

They eventually came up with the clever idea of holding an online auction which is happening this October. So how did the idea come about?

“We wanted to plan a fundraiser that our supporters could engage with, despite the uncertainties we face around running and attending events due to the pandemic.

“I work with the team to ensure we are delivering the impact we strive for within the community and that we spend every single penny available to us in ways that have the greatest outcomes for communities in West Kent.”

Stevie says that one hundred per cent of the profits raised from the online auction in October will go towards helping local people to ‘get well, stay well and thrive.’

“The auction will run for one week from October 15 so there will be plenty of time for people to browse the lots and place their bids.

Individuals and businesses can get involved by donating prizes and placing bids in the auction once it goes live. We are aiming for all prizes to be donated, meaning all profits will go towards providing our vital services.”

In terms of what the charity would like for donations Stevie simply says anything that will make people want to bid.

“There is no set theme for the auction, but we are looking for fabulous prizes that will generate interest, excitement and most importantly bids!”

Stevie says this can be

anything from weekend getaways, spa packages and golf memberships to jewellery, bikes, signed sports memorabilia and VIP event tickets.

“Everyone needs to be uplifted by entertainment and we hope we can do that for people” The arts world has been hit hard by the pandemic but as restrictions lift, live theatre and performances can now start to go ahead. Hannah Rotchell and Oliver Tourle, co-founders of local production company Bravo tell Eileen Leahy all about how they survived lockdown and discuss their summer programme which includes the forthcoming extravaganza Night at the Musicals…

How has the past year of lockdowns been for Bravo Productions?

Like so many businesses, it has been such a challenging time to keep adjusting and still operate under the ever-changing restrictions put in place due to the Covid crisis. Having said that we have tried not to let it beat us and during lockdowns we produced a series of virtual concerts something we knew nothing about when we started them!

What positives can you take away from the past year of lockdowns?

Although it has been a bit of a rollercoaster ride, the pandemic has taught us a lot. Seeing restrictions gradually easing, it’s really exciting to now be planning performances. Although, whilst still being very conscious of socialdistancing and people’s safety, we’re thrilled to be seeing light at the end of a very long tunnel!

How confident are you now in terms of putting on shows?

We are more than ready! Nothing beats live music, entertainment and the atmosphere it creates. We are thrilled to still be doing what we love and are very excited to welcome back an audience.

We will do everything we can to ensure our audience and performers feel safe. We were newly formed just months prior to the first lockdown and we’ve been very fortunate to be supported by many people.

What’s on your programme for this summer?

On Sunday July 11 we are hosting our A Night at the Musicals as part of Tonbridge Music Weekend and it will feature a host of West End and Broadway stars accompanied by a 13-piece live orchestra.

Tell us a little bit about this year’s A Night at the Musicals?

The line-up consists of Ben Forster (ITV’s Superstar Winner and Phantom of the Opera) Lucie Jones (Waitress and Eurovision), John Owen-Jones (Phantom of the Opera and Les Misèrables) and Rachel Tucker (WICKED and Come From Away). Not forgetting, our extremely special guest Mazz Murray, renowned for playing Killer Queen in We Will Rock You for over 10 years in the West End and who is now playing Donna in the West End musical Mamma Mia. It’s going to be a once in a lifetime evening and a line-up that doesn’t often happen!

You are also hosting The Princess Picnic, what is that all about?

It’s the perfect entertainment for your little ones that will get them singing along and watching their favourite fairytale characters come to life on stage! We are very fortunate to be partnering up with Once Upon A Wish Events for this magical journey of a performance and have also just signed up Wicked Production’s Tom Swift as our host for the event.

What else do you have lined up for the rest of the year?

This Christmas will be extra special for us as we are producing Castlemas at Tonbridge Castle. This 10-day festive experience features an impressive pop-up heated igloo at the heart of the lawn which will serve as our venue. There will be a variety of around 50 one-hour performances to suit all age groups. Mistletoe Market will see 30 wooden chalets brought to life, featuring the very best of local businesses. In short, there will be something for the whole family to enjoy including creative workshops, outdoor performances, Santa in his grotto and even a sprinkling of snowfall every evening!

What else are you up to this year?

“We have been deeply humbled by our students’ resilience” The various lockdowns have had enormous implications for our children so how have they coped now they have returned to the classroom? Spokespeople for two of our leading schools reveal their experience…

Assistant Head (Student Welfare) Rebecca Hurton, Claremont Senior School The news has been awash with negative terminology describing the impact of the pandemic on teenagers, often referring to them as the ‘lost generation’, and we have seen many of our own students struggle with the isolation of lockdown, particularly during the second wave.

Overwhelmingly, we have been deeply humbled by our students’ resilience, with many reporting their anxiety levels alleviated by simply returning to school, but we have also invested in a bespoke pastoral support programme to include ongoing assessments and questionnaires that flag any hidden vulnerabilities some students may continue to have. That way we are able to explore and apply strategies that promote positive mental health and wellbeing, as well as keep students on track educationally. We are also lucky to have considerable flexibility in 26 | July 2021 | SO Magazine

the length of our school day to be able to offer additional support to those students in need, to include weekend workshops and theatre rehearsals to ensure performances match the professional standards we have all come to expect as the norm from our creative departments.

For Mental Health week earlier in the year, our Heads of School led a series of activities to help keep us all together from afar. These included group yoga sessions, a family quiz to raise money for Combat Stress and a challenge for the whole school community to collectively travel 40765 km, the distance covered by the famous Phileas Fogg.

Deputy Headmistress, Sharon Wade, Hilden Oaks Preparatory School & Nursery The vast majority of the Hilden Oaks pupils had a good lockdown, with access to their personal school iPad and a healthy mix of live and recorded lessons - many even thrived without distractions!

Assessments told us that the pupils’ learning was in good shape, however, what had been missed most by the children during lockdown, were their friends. Once back at school, the journey of learning together began again.

We started to notice that moments of stillness became very important in a busy class environment, which was when our mindfulness curriculum came into its own, providing space for calm reflection in the day. PSHCEE lessons were devoted to building friendships and positive working relationships with each other.

Our Year 5 pupils became AntiBullying Ambassadors with the Diana Awards and new playground equipment was purchased by our active Friends Association. This all contributed to a lively yet relaxed atmosphere on the playground, where everyone could have fun whilst re-establishing their friendships.

With lockdown lifting further, school trips were booked and the joy on the Year 6 children’s faces, as they climbed into the bus departing for their weeklong residential trip to Skern Lodge in

Devon, confirmed how much of a morale boost it was to be able to go away together. Other day trips for the rest of the school followed; to wildlife centres, castles and museums, and the thrill of adventuring together once again brought laughter to the halls and corridors in school.

SUMMER CAMPS AT TUNBRIDGE WELLS LAWN TENNIS CLUB Tunbridge Wells Lawn Tennis Club members are looking forward to playing on three newly resurfaced clay courts this summer. Work is being carried out to upgrade three hard courts to a high-quality clay surface which will allow members to play on them in most weather conditions. Club Chairman Tim Shilton said, ‘We are particularly proud of our grass courts but our British weather can be unpredictable, so we are delighted to provide members more all-weather courts. As a club

we are committed to providing the best tennis facilities in the area.’

The club has a busy schedule of matches and competitive tournaments. The Annual Club Championship Finals will be played on 17th July where the level of play is expected to be of a very high standard this year. Michelin star chef Tom Kerridge’s foodie focused Pub in the Park is on from July 9-11 and as usual it will be serving up another fabulous epicurean feast

The event is one of the biggest to happen in the Southeast but this year due to the ongoing coronavirus restrictions things will be a little different with fewer numbers allowed through the gates and pods in operation.

If you’re not familiar with it then in brief Pub in the Park is a smorgasbord of good grooves and fantastic food supported by some of the country’s top musicians on chefs.

In addition to pop-ups run by some of Tom Kerridge’s famous friends there are gigs to enjoy, tastings and food demos aplenty and stalls to brows selling all manner of tasty food and drink.

This year the Tunbridge Wells event is fourth on the Pub in the Park schedule coming straight after events in Warwick, Bath and Dulwich and just before others happening in St Albans, Chiswick and Marlow, where it all began five years ago in Tom’s adopted home town.

Serving up a feast of treats in TW will be the likes of Sankey’s, The Tanner Brothers from The Kentish Hare and Will Devlin from The Small Holding. Other celebrity chefs taking part include Michelin starred Atul Kochhar along with Tom himself who will be with his Michelin starred Hand and Flowers Team.

THAT’S THE SPIRIT! Ahead of World Rum Day on July 10, SO magazine meets the founders of The Rum Company and discovers how this fledgling business was established due to the pandemic…

S

ilver lining stories have been fairly scarce over the past 15 months, but thankfully there have been a few and one of them is the creation of The Rum Company, a Tunbridge Wells based business specialising in the tipple that’s set to be the next big drinks trend.

During the first lockdown in March 2020 rum fans and friends Tom Fantom and Ed Willshire found themselves wondering what rum to order. They quickly realised however there were literally hundreds of independent – and under promoted - rums out there to buy but there was no collective umbrella to help publicise them.

And that’s when Tom, a graphic designer and Ed, who works parttime in healthcare, had the idea to do something about it as they tell us here…

WHY DO YOU LOVE RUM SO MUCH? Tom: There are so many reasons to love rum, but for me I think it’s the variety I love most. All these British rum brands really go out of their way to put their own stamp on the rum world. As a designer, I am always drawn to the amazing bottle designs and branding first, but there is also so much variety in the flavours too from spiced to honey, pineapple to caramel and much more.

HOW QUICKLY DID THE BUSINESS GROW AND HOW DID YOU MAKE THIS HAPPEN? Ed: The UK rum scene continues to go from strength to strength, with new brands and concepts popping up across Britain. Happily The Rum Company is at the forefront of this scene, offering a platform for new emerging brands as well as your old favourites.

Tom: Since our launch day - which was on World Rum Day July in 2020 - we still remember the buzz of seeing the first orders flood in.

You never really know how it’s going to go until it’s all live and you start seeing your hard work payoff.

Growth has been phenomenal - particularly in our gifting sales and new rum subscription service The Rum Club.

Ed: There is a rum for every mood and occasion - tropical rums for summer days in the garden, elegant light rums for cocktails with friends, botanical rums for those sunset evenings, deeper more indulgent rums for those cosy nights in and eye-catching premium rums for gifting. Whether you're a rum novice, gin lover or salty sea dog, The Rum Company will have a rum for you.

WHEN DID YOU START TRADING AT THE PANTILES MARKET AND HOW IMPORTANT WAS IT TO HAVE THAT CUSTOMER FACING APPROACH TO YOUR BUSINESS? Tom: We were there for the first one of the year post lockdown!

Originally the focus was solely on the website, but as time went on, an opportunity to meet our customers face-to-face was an opportunity too good to miss. It’s great finding out which rums everyone likes or thinks they like, and there aren’t many things better than handing a small sample to someone who doesn’t drink rum at all, and them discovering a new favourite drink in front of your eyes!

WHAT WAS THE CATALYST TO START YOUR OWN COMPANY DURING A PANDEMIC? Ed: The supermarkets offer such a

We are looking at Tonbridge Farmers Market, Penshurst and options at Camber Sands.

WHAT ARE YOUR PERSONAL FAVOURITES? Tom: Favourite rums is a big question and it changes all the time as we are in the fortunate position to keep trying new ones! I normally like nice, sweet, spiced rum, so right now I am enjoying Rockfall, Lytham Jamaican Gingerbread Rum, and almost all of our honey rums! Oh, and Norfolk Rum’s Chocolate Orange - and yes, it tastes exactly like a certain spherical chocolate.

YOU HAVE OVER 100 TYPES OF RUM, HOW DO YOU CURATE YOUR COLLECTION? Tom: It’s tricky to choose, but our priority is always the smaller British brands. We want to be a platform for all rum eventually.

But it feels pretty good helping the smaller brands who really appreciate the support - hopefully we can grow together.

Ed: I also enjoy the honey rums: the combination is a match made in heaven. Sweet, silky smooth and all in balance with the punchy rum.

THE GOOD MIXER:

AND FINALLY, WHY IS RUM SO MUCH FUN? Tom: Its diversity! Just want a nice sipping short on the rocks after a hard week? We have rums perfect for that. Want to make some fantastic home-made cocktails? We have rums for that.

HOW THE RUM COMPANY WORKS “We want to be a platform for all rum eventually, but it feels pretty good helping out the smaller brands”

Each rum is listed with its origin, taste bars, perfect mixers and recommended serves. Flavour is everything so our website makes it easy to find a rum that has pineapple (just search pineapple)...

The majority of British brands we stock import rum over from the Caribbean to use as their base, but then that’s only the start of the process. They all put their own spin on things by adding their choice of flavourings or spices and ageing them in their choice of barrel for however long it takes to achieve the flavour they want.

But…. there are a few brands actually distilling here in the UK allowing them to be in control of the whole process from start to finish which is pretty impressive.

NEW STEAK RESTAURANT PROVES IT’S AT THE TOWN’S CUTTING EDGE

A CUT ABOVE THE REST One of the latest arrivals on Tunbridge Wells’ foodie scene is STEAK and as Lottie Bulmer discovers it’s certainly succeeding when it comes to serving up quality food for discerning diners – including vegetarians…

TEAK has had a difficult journey to its opening. It was scheduled to launch late last year but when Tunbridge Wells was put into the highest Covid tier that put an end to that. And then when the whole country was then plunged into lockdown in early January its shiny new doors had to remain firmly shut.

But now, with restaurants able to reopen and the lifting of most restrictions hopefully in sight next month, the restaurant - which is part of One Warwick Park Hotel – is finally up and running.

My editor asked that I go along to try out its menu as being a vegetarian it would be interesting to see if STEAK which clearly specialises in fine cuts of ribeye and the like also delivered for non-meat eaters…

The restaurant is One Warwick Park’s new flagship eaterie and on heading towards it my guest and I are instantly charmed by its scenic location on Chapel Place, away from the bustle of the town centre and surrounded by a cluster of artisan shops and cool bars.

On arrival we are warmly greeted

by STEAK’s manager, Robin Mallia. He offers us a complimentary glass of prosecco as is custom with every STEAK guest and shows us to our table.

Robin introduces us to our waitress, Olivia who takes our drinks order (for me an Aperol Spritz and my guest Brewdog Punk IPA) and hands us some menus. She’s very friendly and tells us that she has just finished school and was hired back in December before the lockdown, but only started waitressing at the restaurant a few weeks ago upon its official opening.

In terms of STEAK’s décor, the restaurant strikes a fine balance between being dark and atmospheric, yet glimmering with contemporary class. The mirrored walls give the impression that the restaurant is bigger than it is but also manages to add an air of intimacy as tables are sectioned off from each other with dividers, giving it an exclusive – and also safe socially distanced – feel.

Being a vegetarian in a steak restaurant usually gravely limits choices, but I’m happy to report not at STEAK. Despite its name there is actually a

good selection of meat-free options for those who have vegetarian or vegan diets.

To kick things off, I choose the panko crusted halloumi (£6.95) and my guest orders the crispy fried squid (£6.95).

The halloumi is garnished with pomegranate seeds. The latter’s tartness perfectly offset the creamy inside of the crispy halloumi and coolness of the cucumber crème fraiche. It isn’t your standard starter and takes you on a whistle-stop tour of tastes but it’s very pleasing on the palate.

The crispy fried squid and aioli is a classic starter done expertly well but with a slight twist thanks to the wedge of lime in place of lemon and a zingy mustard seed sauce on the side. The mixed leaf salad accompanies the dish perfectly.

When it comes to main courses STEAK offers two meat-free options: a vegan burger with roasted cauliflower steak (£14.50) and pan-fried smoky potato gnocchi (£11.50) – which I opt for.

ingredients conjures up images of autumnal afternoons. They include toasted pecans, crispy sage, dolcelatte cream and smoked cherry tomatoes.

The interesting combination presents an abundance of textures and enjoyable overall taste.

My guest chooses one of the steaks this restaurant is becoming well known for: the 10oz Ribeye (£24.50). It is cooked to my guest’s personal preference perfectly and served with a generous portion of chips and a mixed leaf salad and peppercorn sauce.

Obviously choosing a select cut from STEAK means there is a certain

level of taste expectation, and I’m happy to say my guest said it did not disappoint. If you’re looking for a classic, properly executed cut then STEAK goes above and beyond.

Unable to resist the selection of sides on offer we opt to share roasted broccoli with chilli and garlic (£4) which added enough of a kick without being too spicy.

We probably should have called it a day after our starters and mains, but we spot the intriguingly named ‘Eskimo Bars’ on the menu.

We discover they are two bars of chocolate brownie and vanilla ice

cream dipped in chocolate with hot salted caramel sauce (£7).

Garnished with flowers, fruit and a coulis along with a warm salted caramel on the side, they are a joy to behold – and taste. The sweetness of the coulis and salted caramel compliments the richness of the Eskimo bar perfectly.

The bars are probably enough to share between two, but if you’re looking for an indulgent pud then they will definitely hit the spot!

STEAK offers diners a calm and collected service, with a most welcoming atmosphere. And the important thing to stress is that you don’t have to be a carnivore to enjoy dinner at STEAK thanks to its options for vegetarians and vegans. I’m pleased to say it really is inclusive for everyone.

Children are also welcome thanks to a special menu tailored for little ones – they even have the option of a mini 4oz steak with chunky chips and peas!

As we leave and head off back up the cobbled streets we agree that STEAK is perfect for any occasion: from a midweek date night, to a family meal.

And it really is a cut above the rest…

f (like me) you need to shed a few Covid pounds you’ve probably found yourself googling gym memberships while reaching for that third custard cream. Or you’ve been telling yourself that after a very stressful year you should be treated to a relaxing spa day, maybe one a month… or every day... “It was a total mess. We worked out previous occupants had just literally papered over the cracks but we were determined to uncover all the original features to let the building become alive again.”

Thomas adds the key reason he ended up doing all the work was because they’d had to start eating into the set budget they had by the time they got the keys.

“We were six months behind schedule and Natalie had been on maternity leave so we were in a bit of a pickle and so we got to the point where we couldn’t afford builders. So I just watched some You Tube videos,” he chuckles before adding that he had a lot of additional help from his father.

“Luckily my dad’s an incredible engineer so he came in and helped out. We wanted to restore it to as good as we could get it back to its original roots. It was nice as we had this old guy who kept passing by and peering in and eventually we got chatting and he said that he used to work here when he was five years old!

He said it was a sweet shop at that time and that it now looks exactly like it did when he was a boy. That was a great compliment to receive.”

Thomas openly admits that the

GETTING TO THE ROOT OF HOW TO DELIVER THE BEST PROFESSIONAL HAIR CARE hen it comes to hair care Thomas Taw certainly knows a thing or two. Having worked in the industry for 25 years cutting and styling the tresses of some of the world’s most famous celebrities and supermodels, and working for top brands such as Aveda, he’s clearly incredibly talented and experienced.

But what sets Thomas apart from his peers is that he is also a qualified chemist who has spent the past decade working with cosmetic giants Unilever in its Research & Development department as its Global Damaged Hair & Colour Expert.

So far, so impressive but on meeting him at his newly opened and super impressive eponymous salon TAW at 68 The Pantiles, I swiftly discover that he has another couple of strings to his bow: that of an accomplished builder and interior designer.

“Yes I built and designed the whole salon,” he says casually as we bump elbows and exchange greetings.

“Wow!” I respond looking around the uber cool space which boasts reclaimed wooden walls and flooring, 40 | July 2021 | SO Magazine

trendy barber-style leather vintage chairs, oversized mirrors, glossy green plants and lots of original livery features polished up and proudly on display.

“It’s taken quite a bit of work but let’s face it I had time during lockdown,” Thomas laughs.

Thomas and his partner Natalie Piacun decided to relocate to Tunbridge Wells from globetrotting after they discovered they were expecting a baby.

“Up until the point Natalie found out she was pregnant we were going all over the world due to work. But when we returned to London and knew we were expecting we decided to have a look at moving somewhere more child friendly.”

Thomas explains that he is originally from West Sussex and therefore knew Tunbridge Wells a little bit. “I remember coming here with my grandmother when I was younger,” he reveals.

“The lease I’d had on a salon in Soho was coming to an end so moving out of London seemed like a good idea. We visited Tunbridge Wells one really rainy, cold afternoon in January 2020 and spotted quite a few empty

units on The Pantiles including this one and thought to ourselves let’s take a punt.”

But as we all know 2020 didn’t quite work out the way we wanted thanks to the Covid-shaped curve ball we were all thrown so Thomas decided to stall on signing the lease to take over the shop which up until then had been an oak furniture store.

When the pandemic first gripped the globe everything naturally went on hold but eventually Thomas and Natalie, an acclaimed make-up artist went on to seal the deal on the site and that’s when all the hard work began.

“It was the worst time to launch a business during a pandemic,” smiles Thomas as we sit down to chat in the upper area of the salon which boasts a stunning staircase.

“But I’d already put the offer in and so we were two feet in. It was a wreck but Natalie fell in love with it saying ‘oh it’s got so much potential’ - and I just said ‘yeah the potential to age me 50 years’!”

Because Thomas couldn’t obviously work due to the lockdowns he says he put all his effort into painstakingly bringing the historic building, which dates back to the 1700s, back to life.

“Our approach is more prescribed, we want to know what your issues are and how we get round to fixing them”

who have a good ethical approach - like Aveda - so I have carried that through with my own salon.

“I think that in 2019 we were on the cusp of realising the damage plastics can do in the world and now the pandemic has made people more aware of the environment. I just thought whatever we do we are going to create a certain amount of waste but if we can do so in an environmentally friendly way then that’s the best solution.”

As well as the eco-friendly gear Thomas says he has installed a high-density plasma generator too.

What on earth is that I ask him?

“It’s what they install in hospital operating theatres. It sucks in all the air from the building which it then cleans internally eight times an hour then it spits out clean air.”

Not what you’d find in your average salon I say but then as we continue to chat it’s clear that Thomas doesn’t do things in the traditional way.

Unlike most hairdressers who’ll buy in their products from big brands like Wella or L’Oreal, Thomas has once again leaned on his personal skill set to create a bespoke line of hair products which he says will be launching soon.

“We have set up our own lab in Morocco to do this making Argan and Rosemary oils. We wanted to look at what really works and that of course is age old recipes based on natural ingredients. We did a lot of research as we wanted to produce an oil you can put on your skin, cook with and obviously put on your hair. And so we have created five different holistic products. We don’t homogenise or pasteurise any of it we keep it raw – or cold pressed – and will only produce it in small batches. Hair grows from your skin which is why we formulated these products to be in harmony with both.”

whole project was ‘a bit of a grind’ but the hard work was tempered by some very interesting finds.

“I found German wrought iron shrapnel in the beams upstairs where trees had originally been hit by bombs and then were used as timber joints here. At the last count I pulled out 7,5000 hand cut nails from the walls and it took me nine days to sand them back!”

And because they weren’t doing a retrospective refit but starting from scratch they were able to space out their salon chairs and basins at two metres, thus ensuring that whatever happens their clients can be looked after safely.

When they were finally able to open in April this year Thomas says business at TAW was thankfully very brisk.

“I went from scrubbing paint off

Thomas says that due to delays with Brexit and the pandemic the first batch had to be scrapped. But he says they should be hitting his finely honed wooden shelves soon.

And that unlike most haircare products there will be no silicone in them.

For the meantime the team at TAW is using a selection of organic products called Natulique which are also vegan and cruelty free.

“They’re the world’s first properly

“I have always had a scientific approach to what I do” certified organic hair product company in the world,” explains Thomas. “They’re based in Denmark and as well as all the packaging being 100% recyclable they also do a 98.2% plant based hair colour.

That’s very rare but great as it eliminates the scary chemical element to using colour.

“We don’t want to pretend we’re a green wash company. If we’re going to do it then we’re going to do it properly, roots up. It keeps our ethic on track.”

So how did Thomas go from snipping hair to science then?

“Well I have always had a scientific approach to what I do as I studied as a chemist, my brother’s a biologist and my grandfather was a pharmacologist so it’s something I have always been surrounded by and interested in.

“Working with hair you look at it as a material but it’s also a chemical

structure. It’s really important to understand as much as you can about the hair itself in order to work more efficiently. You also need to understand the scalp and therefore skin too.

“I’ve got a girl who works with me and she’s a trained trichologist so with no disrespect to any other hairdressers here at TAW we’re not just about making someone look good and talking about holidays – not that there aren’t any to talk about right now!

“If people have a sensitive scalp we want to get to the root cause of it. Or is someone’s hair has been damaged through colouring we want to look at how we can remedy it. We’re not about selling you a bottle of shampoo to do that – we want to look at it structurally, see what you’ve done to it and work out how we can rebuild it. “ Thomas and Natalie will also be offering pop-up nail and make-up treatments as well as facials in the salon too. He says that the team get together every week to discuss any new trends or developments, always learning how to be at the cutting edge of things.

“We want to go to top-to-toe so at TAW,” concludes Thomas. “We’ll cover everything from your head to your toenails – not synthetically but systemically. Our approach is more prescribed, we want to know what your issues are and how we get round to fixing them.”

As I leave I compliment Thomas once again on the amazing job he’s done on creating such an aesthetically pleasing space.

“I thought it was a nice part of the story to bring it back to its natural state and make it more beautiful – I guess you could say it’s a bit like how we approach hair and skin.” www.thomastaw.com

That ethos he applied to getting the salon back to its roots (no pun intended) to make it breathe again is how he approaches the world of haircare.

“We have what we call this ‘intelligent approach’ to what we do so we thought we’d incorporate that into all areas of the business.

Why it’s Rosemary Shrager’s time to shine thanks to a special eye operation.

Eileen Leahy finds out why the celebrity chef went under the knife…

W

hen it comes to confidence celebrity chef Rosemary Shrager is positively bubbling over with it. But as she recently revealed in the press she’s been suffering from an eye condition that had started to chip away at her trademark cheery nature – until she found the solution at Bella Vou clinic on The Pantiles in Tunbridge Wells.

The popular cook and TV personality, who has starred in shows as diverse as Ladette to Lady, I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here and The Real Marigold Hotel and published numerous recipe books over the years, recently underwent specialist eye lid lifting surgery known as ‘Upper Blepharoplasty’.

The reason for this she tells me was to correct persistently heavy eyelids 44 | July 2021 | SO Magazine

which caused huge discomfort and affected her everyday life.

“The tops of my eyelids fell down and were very uncomfortable and made my eyes very sticky. I wanted to put match sticks in them to keep my eyelids up it was that bad – and in fact because of this condition you couldn’t see my eyes at all,” she explains at our interview in the luxury reception area of Bella Vou. Hooded, or drooping eyelids are a common problem, especially as one ages. They are caused by a weakening of muscle (known as ptosis) or excess skin, fat or muscle in the eyelid area (known as dermatochalasis).

Rosemary, who presented fun cookalongs every week on Facebook during lockdowns, decided that something had to be done about this when her eyes constantly streamed during filming. And so therefore

decided to ask leading local plastic surgeon Amir Nakhdjevani at Bella Vou clinic for his advice.

Amir told the chef who until recently ran her own cookery school just next door to Bella Vou that the condition was known as upper eyelid overhang and suggested a quick and easy solution to the problem: Upper Blepharoplasty surgery.

“The whole procedure lasted no more than 40 minutes and was a bit like going to the dentist,” laughs Rosemary.

“I arrived at the clinic, sat in the chair, had my local anaesthetic and then the next thing I knew Amir was telling me to open my eyes. It really was a revelation as before the operation my eyes were really slitty and I found it so hard to keep them open. Yet here I was after a short period of time able to properly see for the first time. It was absolutely incredible!

“It has made me feel so much more confident. My eyes are open, you can see that I have blue eyes which are my best asset,” she giggles - clearly still ecstatic with the results of the operation which was done in March.

“And for the first time I can put make up on! I’m really loving that – especially on photo shoots.”

“It’s a delicate area so understandably I was nervous but actually Amir and his team made me feel very comfortable so it was fine. I was so desperate to have it done that I was willing to go through anything – even my eyelids being slit!”

Rosemary needn’t have worried as she says straight after the operation Amir said ‘look’ and she certainly liked what she saw.

“I couldn’t believe I could actually see my eyes! It has such an immediate impact on my life! Of course there was some bruising and it took a week to heal completely but it was such a good result and I cannot recommend it enough. It has

genuinely changed my life and the good news is my eyes will get better and better.”

Amir says that this kind of reaction from clients who have this procedure done is very common.

“We do this operation pretty much daily and when people have this kind of surgery they can’t believe the results. It’s not big but it has a huge impact. No one knows you’ve had it done but it makes you look less tired you look refreshed.”

The talented surgeon goes on to say that not all of his colleagues in the world of plastic surgery carry out facial work as it is so ‘intricate’.

“You have to make sure the scar sits in the right place so when the eyes open it is hidden. Not every cosmetic surgeon does this type of work. They do tummy or breast operations but not facial work because it’s so intricate and if you get it wrong everyone can see and you can destroy someone’s life.”

Rosemary who has a new series of murder mystery novels coming out early next year adds: “It’s a huge responsibility when

“It was such a pleasure to sit in that make-up chair. I said to the lady doing my face ‘go for my eyes, go for my eyes. “I really wish I’d had done this years ago and would say to anyone with the same problem to go ahead and do it.”

Rosemary does admit however that she was a little apprehensive prior to the procedure.

“I write under the name Prudence Bulstrode but it’s to do with food and many of my experiences in life,” she reveals.

“I’ve got to promote my new book and travel around the country doing TV and literary festivals and it’s a totally different world now thanks to this surgery. It’s so small but it makes you feel so much more confident because I know it also makes me look younger - which is very important!”

This month our resident gardening guru Victoria Truman discusses the rise in popularity of the pergola – and why every sociable garden should have one ergolas are a main feature I get asked to include when designing a new garden.

The origin of the word comes from the Latin ‘pergula’, referring to a projecting eave. Your typical pergola offers shade and structure for plants to scramble over but as it is increasingly becoming obvious, they are becoming an extension of the inside, outside. With so many options available nowadays to make a dining or lounging area a place of seclusion and privacy, the pergola is fast becoming the key focal point in any outside space.

s holidaymakers search for hidden gems this year in the UK, gardens and visitor attractions in Kent and East Sussex continue to innovate and offer unusual immersive nature experiences.

The wonderfully romantic turrets of 15th century Herstmonceux Garden estates near Eastbourne, welcomed a flock of Herdwick sheep to the grounds three years ago in their continued effort to re-wild areas of the estate. The results of their No Mow policy and their industrious sheep, are two stunning wildflower meadows; home to orchids, oxeye daisies yarrow, butter cups and hundreds of butterflies and bees.

The Estate now welcomes a wonderful colony of butterflies including orange tipped butterflies, meadow-browns, peacocks, red admirals, white admirals and the gatekeeper butterfly.

The team there are carrying out a monthly survey of the butterflies and have also seen an increase all over the estate in birds of prey such as kestrels, red kites and hobbies, as well as the marsh harrier from nearby

Pevensey Levels.

The formal gardens at the castle which include the Shakespeare Garden, Elizabethan Garden, Magic Garden, Apothecary Garden, Lower Garden and the Folly Garden have all benefited from this increase in butterfly numbers.

The pollinators are busy among the flocks and the lilies in the Elizabethan garden, and the roses in the Sundial Garden are a magnet for the bees this summer.

Visitors to the Castle are encouraged to pick up a butterfly identification sheet along with a simple nature trail and to explore some of the 300 acres that surround the mediaeval castle.

Herstmonceux currently has a herd of 30 deer but the dream going forward is to have a managed population of red deer, buffalo (or bison) and rare breed sheep in order to create a mosaic patchwork of habitats that Guy Lucas says “will attract lots of rare flora and lots of invertebrates and pollinators which in turn will bring more birds and small mammals meaning an overall increase in the diversity and resilience of the estate.” www.herstmonceux-castle.co.uk SO Magazine | July 2021 | 51

Tunbridge Wells based gifting company Lime Tree London has grown from a kitchen table start-up to a hugely successful online operation in just under a decade. Here founders Hayley Adams and Natalie Jolliffe tell Eileen Leahy all about the secrets of their success - and some of their celebrity clients Let's start with you telling us in a nutshell what your business is all about?

Lime Tree London is an online independent retail business, selling our own designs and a growing handpicked collection of complimentary beautiful products.

What’s your USP? We specialise in home and gifts, from artificial flowers to personalised beach towels and aprons, children’s furniture to wooden toys and bed linen.

Only things we would love to have to in our own homes, for our children or ourselves make the collection.

When did you launch and why?

Hayley: I launched the company in 2012 after having the desire to make my own range of home textiles. This was followed quickly by the idea to have a Christmas stockings range. I then designed several items and quickly the Christmas

stockings became the best sellers, so they were the first collection to take off.

How did the name come about?

Hayley: The business was born around the kitchen table at Lime Tree Cottage my childhood home in the heart of the Kent countryside. The best things happen around the big wooden table there: Birthday celebrations, late night chats, Christmas dinner, and … business ideas!

How quickly did things happen for you?

Hayley: Sales exceeded all expectations in the first year; it was both crazy and fantastic!

We struggled to cope with demand – all orders were fulfilled at Lime Tree Cottage, taking over the entire house and stables!

How did you cope with such instant success?

Hayley: My family and I were up until the early hours most SO Magazine | July 2021 | 53

stockings! At first I hand painted names onto stockings but quickly realised with the growing demand, this would not be manageable.

Natalie: Hayley first found a printer to help and then moved onto embroidery, which gives a lovely luxurious feel.

What kind of personalised items do you offer?

Hayley: Over the years, as the collection has grown, we have a range of hi-tech machines to embroider, engrave, laser and print names on a vast majority of the range, not just fabric. We can now offer free personalisation on soft and wooden toys, aprons, towels, children’s furniture and much more.

Natalie: Adding a name or phrase, is so popular with our customers because it makes a gift more personal, thoughtful, or fun. It’s especially popular for Mother and Father’s Day, birthday presents, christenings, weddings and of course at Christmas time.

The Christmas Tree sat undecorated until Christmas Eve because we were still packing orders! Since then, running the business has tightened up a lot and we aren't so close to the bone these days thankfully.

Christmas stockings and sacks: they are our own designs, so they offer something unique. The best-selling designs, we stock year after year, and it’s the best feeling when families grow, and customers come back to us for a stocking for a new baby!

Hayley then joined you at Lime Tree London. How did this come about?

Natalie: I was a clothing buyer before I came on board and Hayley was a textile designer. Collectively we had 30 years’ experience between us when we started working together. Being friends and colleagues over the years, we decided to pool our skills and friendship together to create Lime Tree London into the lifestyle brand that it is today.

Hayley: The joy that comes from our own designs being appreciated by our amazing customers means we have never looked back.

Wooden toys: these also sell well, again they offer something different from the High Street.

Toy storage bags: the designs are fun or classic, and can also be personalised.

Do you outsource most of your products or are some of them designed by yourselves?

Hayley: We are proud to say that more than half of our collection is designed in-house by myself and made in our partner factory.

Natalie: The remaining balance of the collection is sourced globally to broaden the range of products we offer, bringing a specially curated collection to the Lime Tree London customer.

Monogramming is a big part of your business model. What made you go down this route?

Hayley: When we began selling our stockings eight years ago it only seemed like the right idea to personalise them so that Father Christmas would be able to identify individual 54 | July 2021 | SO Magazine

Where do you draw general inspiration from when it comes to designing/curating collections?

Hayley: Life! Being mums ourselves certainly helps as the demands change from our ever-changing families! We prefer to sell long lasting gifts that will last for generations to come, hence why we only sell wooden toys, high quality Christmas decorations that can be enjoyed year after year, and beautifully made home textiles.

What key lessons have you learnt over the past nine years of trading?

Natalie: Our lessons are to be never afraid to try something new, by staying creative and true to ourselves.

Be wise with costs, treat customers how you would like to be treated.

Hayley: As the collection has grown so have the sites on which we sell.

What makes your business unique compared to other lifestyle brands?

Natalie: We aren't your usual gift shop, so much of our collection is our own designs, that we design because we would love them for our own family and home.

You have several celebrity clients, are you able to tell us who some of them are and how they discovered you?

Hayley: We have had royalty buy from us, many footballers, pop stars and TV presenters such as Jake Humphrey who won’t mind us mentioning that he and his wife are regular customers of ours. A highlight last Christmas was when Nick Jonas sent a chauffeur to Natalie’s home on Christmas Eve to collect a last-minute Christmas stocking order. That evening his wife Prianka Chopra posted a lovely image on Instagram of their Lime Tree London stockings by the fireplace! A definite pinch me moment!

What's next for Lime Tree London?

Natalie: Always new collections!

Hayley has already designed a very exciting new collection for Christmas 2021, homeware will see a big expansion from August this year and there are plans to design and manufacture more children’s products in-house next spring.

And finally, why should we all have a little Lime Tree London in our homes?

Hayley: All the products in the collection are tried and tested by our own five children. If they don’t pass the test with them, they don't make the cut in the collection.

A spa to soothe the soul

Liz Connor visits Rockliffe Hall and finds a smart couple’s wellness retreat in County Durham’s epic countryside

T

he journey to Rockliffe Hall was an eventful one, that involved sprinting between tubes, trains, rail replacement buses and taxis – suitcase in one hand and half-drunk coffee sloshing down the sleeve of the other – but it was hard to stay mad about a bit of spilt milk when we finally pulled up to its gates.

Everything about the 18thcentury country house is grand, from the gothic redbrick architecture to the acres of manicured lawns surrounding it. Set in the quiet village of Hurworth, in the green sticks of Darlington and County Durham, it’s a private retreat that fringes a pretty stretch of the River Tees.

The fact that the main hotel has been closed for months due to government restrictions adds to its bygone feel, and in-line with rules, I’m staying in a self-catered apartment set

away from the main hotel (Rockliffe has four-bedroomed Woodland Mews homes, and Armstrong House, with six apartments featuring kitchenettes).

Steering away from the grandeur of the hotel lobby and towards the apartment blocks, it’s hard not to feel a bit short changed. Built in a way that’s sympathetic to the local landscape, the apartments are unimposing, but have an unmistakable ‘new build’ vibe in comparison to Rockliffe’s raw Victorian beauty.

Once we’d de-masked, dumped our bags and clicked on the kettle to make a pot of coffee, though, we soon felt at home, and that’s one of the major draws of the newer apartments: you can enjoy the freedom of an Airbnb-style staycation, padding over to make the most of the hotel’s spa before enjoying a cosy, pyjama-clad board game night in your living room.

Just like the Grade-II listed house, the Armstrong House apartments are big and homely, and they’re also dogfriendly, too. There are one and two-beds available – ours has a combined kitchen and living room, two bathrooms (one with a shower and a bath), and a bedroom with oodles of room to spread out.

Everything you need is here, from flutes for celebratory fizz and pans for rustling up home-cooked grub, to umbrellas for braving the inclement northern weather.

Rockliffe is catnip to golfers and spa lovers alike, which makes it a front runner for a couples’ weekend. Two showers later, we crunch down the garden’s gravel paths to the Clubhouse, a smart members’ bar, for a beer in the lateafternoon sunshine. The 18-hole championship golf course is said to be one of the most challenging in Europe (prices start from £30 per day),

and even if you couldn’t care less about sport, it’s almost medicinal to watch the golfers swing and putt from hole to hole, soundtracked by birdsong and the faint hum of lawnmowers.

One thing to know about Hurworth is that the people are very friendly, and we soon get chatting to a local called Francis, who gives us the lay of the land over another round.

As our bellies rumble, we venture the 30-minute walk into town to a pub called The Bay Horse (thebayhorsehurworth.co.uk); a local foodie tip from Francis.

The hotel has a 4AA Rosette restaurant called The Orangery, as well as a Brasserie, that won’t open until Covid rules change on May 17.

The faint glow from the 15th century coaching inn’s windows is all-too enticing, but we’d come layered up in thermals, jumpers and thick socks, to brave eating outdoors on one of their picnic tables.

It’s hard to narrow down the everything-sounds-incredible menu, but eventually settle on

roasted king scallops with a curried pear dressing, a rump of lamb with spiced Moroccan potato pave and summer squash, and a delicious bottle of red from Paso Robles, recommended by the friendly sommelier (starters from £7.95; mains from £12.50).

The next morning, we enjoy a homemade breakfast; our fridge is heartily stocked with locally sourced butter and yoghurts, eggs, porridge oats, milk, crusty bread and orange juice. Caffeinated, we robe up and make our way to the spa, which is open to other hotel guests, as well as spa day visitors. For now, to enable social distancing, we book a two-hour session in the spa, floating between the swimming pool, outdoor Jacuzzi and a hydro pool with massage jets (all breaks include two hours’ use of the spa and access to the gym).

Adjacent is a spa garden; a tiny hidden oasis with an infinity-edge pool that looks out across the grounds of the sprawling estate. This costs extra to book (£30 per person

for two hours) but is well worth it if the weather’s good.

We had the tranquil garden all to ourselves, and with the sun beating its welcome heat on my shoulders, all but the spa concierge’s thick county Durham accent made me feel like I could be in the south of France.

Next it was on to a massage.

I was concerned about how relaxing a spa treatment would be with rigorous rules in place, but my treatment, called Himalayan Splendour (£150 for 120 minutes), was so relaxing, I almost forgot I was wearing a face covering throughout. My masseuse gloriously sloughed away dead skin cells using a Himalayan salt scrub, before delicately rolling bamboo massage tools across the front and back of my body. She finished up with a relaxing facial, using goji berry and macadamia oil to soothe my skin.

Rockliffe Hall’s location on

the banks of the River Tees means there are some really pretty walks around the estate’s grounds. We throw on our trainers (mine, regrettably white) and take a short woodland stroll through the hotel’s Alice In Wonderland themed-children’s play area – Lewis Carroll grew up in nearby Croft. We loop onto a longer riverside trail that follows the banks of the Tees, which really shows off the wild beauty of the area. There are 59 species of butterfly in Britain, and Rockliffe Hall is home to 20 of these, as well as over 90 different species of bird.

There are also lots of lovely day trip options beyond the gates of Rockliffe Hall, and you’re in a decent jumping off point to visit Durham, York, the dramatic North East coastline and the rugged North York Moors. We decide to make a final pitstop at Saltburn-on-Sea, which is

45-minutes by car from the hotel, or a 50-minute train journey from Darlington (a taxi from the hotel to the town costs around £8; the train costs £8.40).

The Ship Inn pub (shipsaltburn.com) remains a focal point of the area, steeped in smuggling folklore, but it was closed because of the weather, so we ignore the spitting rain and settle on al fresco fish and chips. We stalk the seafront looking for an empty bench, finally resting our legs with the waves smashing against the shingle.

Forking at a polystyrene tub of battered cod, we embrace the refreshingly bad weather, intermittently stopping to gulp mouthfuls of Coca Cola and scream at the wind blowing away our napkins.

Bellies full and souls fuller, we leave feeling content – high on lungs full of sea air and a weekend of locals and laughter. It’s obvious Rockliffe Hall will take on a different kind of magic when it’s able to open in all its glory, but for now, it’s been bliss.

Volkswagen’s given its Tiguan SUV the R treatment – but does a go-faster engine and racy styling make for a compelling combo?

WHAT IS IT?

Volkswagen has hit on a pretty successful recipe: build cars for every segment, then slap an R badge on the boot, give it a sporty look and rapid engine, and you’ve got yourself yet another performance car as a halo for the line-up.

That might sound like a cynical intro, but it’s a recipe that works. We’ve got the Golf R hatchback, T-Roc R crossover, Touareg R SUV – and now the Tiguan R, a mid-sized SUV that takes the usual VW R combination and applies it to the firm’s bestselling model. It should sell like hot cakes then…

WHAT’S UNDER THE BONNET?

If you’re at all familiar with your Volkswagen performance models, you’ll recognise the engine used here. It’s the latest generation of the EA888 2.0-litre, turbocharged petrol unit, here with 316bhp and 420Nm of torque.

We’ve become used to its old-school, boosty nature, with the sports exhaust giving off a great sound. It doesn’t feel quite so urgent here as elsewhere, on account of being in a heavy SUV, but it’s got more than enough punch to make swift progress.

WHAT’S IT LIKE TO DRIVE?

When you’re really pressing on, the Tiguan does a great job of hiding its size. You never feel like you’re in a hot hatch, but covering country lanes at a rapid pace is less intimidating than you’d expect. And if you put it in sport mode and use the paddles to shift manually, the gearbox is almost seamless between shifts.

However, it’s let down slightly by its everyday driveability. The gearbox is sluggish and unresponsive, being too reluctant to drop down a gear, and the ride isn’t quite as settled thanks to its sportier setup, but that’s only a small issue.

WHAT’S IT LIKE INSIDE?

The cabin is large and spacious, with an imperious driving position that gives you a fantastic view of the road. The large glasshouse surrounding you lets lots of light in, helping the car feel airy despite the dark upholstery.

The seats are comfortable and the touchscreen is clear and easy to use. However, VW has an obsession with touch buttons elsewhere, and they’re quite unpleasant to use. The heating controls are fiddly, while the steering wheel’s touch buttons are genuinely unpleasant to operate. Minor irritants, but irritants you’ll use all the time.

WHAT’S THE SPEC LIKE?

Prices for the Tiguan R start at £45,410, and for the money you get 21-inch alloy wheels, some R styling tweaks, and LED front and rear lights on the outside, while inside there are clothupholstered sports seats, blue details, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter handle, and stainless steel pedals.

Auto integration in the infotainment system, and satellite navigation, while two USB-C ports in the front and one in the centre console in the rear mean charging devices is quick and easy.

Enticing optional extras include a panoramic sunroof (960), heated front washer nozzles and heated outer rear seats (£55), a Harman kardon premium sound system (£790) and a leather package (£1,605). For those who truly wish to amplify the engine note, there’s an Akrapovic exhaust upgrade that costs £3,155.

VERDICT

The Volkswagen Tiguan R might be a new model, but it’s an already familiar package. That 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine has long won plaudits for its boosty nature, while the handling is genuinely impressive for an SUV. It’s not perfect, though.

There are some concessions to comfort and running costs compared with less racy models, while the touchsensitive buttons common to the range continue to annoy.

However, as an overall package, the Tiguan R is a compelling, stylish and pacey SUV.
