W

ell, we’re back in print and we are SO pleased!

To say the past few months have been difficult, worrying and uncertain is something of a huge understatement but hopefully as we return to what is being dubbed the ‘new normal’ we can be thankful for the little things that an enforced lockdown due to the Covid-19 crisis gave us.

For you it might have been more time with your immediate family or the opportunity to do more exercise or expand your recipe repertoire. Personally, I found my regular walks in the countryside to be wonderful respite.

However you filled that unprecedented period of time where we couldn’t socialise with friends or visit the pub - or even a garden centre for that matter - I hope you got through it OK. Our return issue of SO is filled with stories of inspiring people, most of whom turned all the negative elements inflicted on them by the coronavirus crisis into positives.

SO coverstar Melissa Bandtock certainly did. The mother of four and business entrepreneur was poised to launch her beautiful lighting boutique lumière on the High Street in Tunbridge Wells when coronavirus put paid to that. But instead of despairing she kept on track, getting it ready behind the scenes with the help of her husband and children, determined to not let a health pandemic stop her vision. Read

ROYAL TREATMENT Hever Castle, the former childhood home of Anne Boleyn, King Henry VIII’s second wife, boasts 125 acres of glorious grounds and perfectly manicured gardens people can enjoy once again under social distancing and safety measures. It is now also possible to visit inside the castle but booking is essential. BEAUTIFUL BEWL Bewl Water is the perfect place to get away from it all. Since reopening earlier this summer the 800-acre site has welcomed hundreds of people who enjoy walking or cycling around its picturesque reservoir. HOLE LOTTA LOVE Hole Park near Rolvenden is now open and operating seven days a week in order to accommodate visitors. ART IS EVERYWHERE The Fairfax Gallery is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year so what better time to pay this artistic gem on The Pantiles a visit? Running until September 8 you can see a wealth of work from over the past

two decades on display. One of the artist’s work on display is that of Mary Jane Ansell who specialises in hyper real painting portraiture.

TIME TO GO APE Go Ape at Bedgebury is also now up and running once more, with all the necessary safety and social distancing measures in place. It is great for thrill-seekers to get stuck into with its tree top walks, swings and zip wires. FLOWER POWER Pashley Manor in Ticehurst is usually buzzing with plenty of exhibitions around this time of year. IT’S GREAT AT COMP Another garden well worth a visit albeit a little bit further afield is Great Comp in Sevenoaks. It reopened last month welcoming its annual season ticket holders back to see its salvias and spring trees dotted around its seven acres.

s the August bank holiday approaches, you would ordinarily find us getting ready to welcome thousands of music fans, picnic blankets in hand, to Calverley Grounds for the Local & Live Festival 2020 – and probably panicking about whether it’s going to rain or not.

This year, however, will be a little different. With coronavirus putting a very large spanner in the works for large events across the world, we’ve had to get creative in finding a way to celebrate Local & Live without compromising the health and safety of our wonderful artists, crew, fringe venues and, of course, the visitors who support the festival every year.

So, in lieu of a potentially soggy weekend in the park, we’re pulling together an online celebration of

our incredible local music scene and the Local & Live we’ve all come to know and love, broadcast directly into your living rooms on the bank holiday. It’s not the event we all hoped it would be, but it will be a chance to come together as a community and raise a glass.

local unsigned music, fundraising has always played a hugely important role in what we do, over the festival weekend and throughout the year.

Looking towards the latter half of 2020 and into 2021, we will continue fundraising to support the charity’s ongoing work, and hopefully, make next year’s festival bigger and better than ever.

How this woman can help you light up your life Melissa Bandtock launched her new lighting boutique lumière last month. And despite being thrown a huge lockdown shaped curveball the talented entrepreneur has made a huge success of it already. Eileen Leahy meets her to find out why she is so passionate about the wonderful world of illumination…

nyone who found themselves regularly walking along the High Street in Tunbridge Wells during the lockdown period can’t help to have noticed the fascinating unfolding story of a new shop emerging from the premises formerly occupied by Mark Wilkinson Kitchens.

It all started back in February – the 14th to be precise - when the building’s new occupier Melissa 8 | August 2020 | SO Magazine

Bandtock stood outside with her brood of four young children - all carrying a heart shaped balloon revealing she would be opening a designer lighting emporium called lumière.

Over the following weeks Melissa also started recording lumière’s exciting development on social media, posting pictures of the shop’s designer lighting brands as well as progress updates such as unveiling the shop frontage’s striking signature

turquoise colour as well as its stylish signage.

And despite doing all this in the peak of the Covid-19 health pandemic - which would have made most start-ups run for the hills Melissa kept her dream of opening lumière well and truly switched on.

As the weeks went on she and her husband, often accompanied by their children, got to work drilling, fitting, painting and prepping the boutique. It was turning out to be

quite the family affair and Melissa started garnering quite the following both in real life courtesy of curious passers by and also on Instagram.

Then finally, months after her original launch date, Melissa opened lumière on July 4 and since then it has been buzzing with customers and interior designers all keen to finally see what illuminating ideas can be found at lumière.

white clinical hospital room and sitting by a fire or in a candlelit space. Is a sunset just a state of the sun’s daily cycle? No, it is a beautiful, intense experience because of the colour and light the sun reflects in our sky.

Decorative lighting is the jewel of a room and it can either help tie all the elements together or make a space feel disjointed, impersonal and cold.

How did you take this passion and turn it into a bricks and mortar business?

I felt the time was right, I made my decision to go for it and I did not let anything get in my way until I had succeeded. It was a long and winding road and I had many setbacks and bumps along the way. Finding the right retail spot took a while and sourcing the right products was a lengthy process which involved numerous trips away to trade shows such as Maison et Objet in Paris.

So how did you come up with the idea of moving into running your own lighting emporium?

My husband and I have renovated a number of homes together and have always struggled to source the lighting. I love original, slightly quirky, good quality, decorative lighting and my friends are forever asking me to help them with their renovation projects. I get such a rush finding that perfect ‘forever light’.

My passion for lighting, my constant search for a creative outlet, the array of beautiful high-end bathroom and kitchen showrooms in Tunbridge Wells, all combined with the huge gap in the market for high-end lighting in this part of the country, all pointed to one obvious solution: lumière.

Tell us what it is about lighting that you love so much?

Lighting is not just a way of illuminating a room. It sets the mood, the vibe, it is pivotal in what emotions are conjured up when someone enters that room. Think of the contrast between walking into a brightly lit

Given that you were due to launch around the time the Prime Minister locked down the country how did you not lose your nerve?

I am a strong believer in what is meant to be will be, one way or another, at some point in time. I am also very stubborn and driven so when I set my mind to something, all my energy will go into trying to make it happen.

What kinds of things got you through this difficult and unpredictable period?

My yoga and meditation kept me grounded and my running gave me a much-needed opportunity for some me-time out of the house. Mostly though my four children, aged between 3 and 11 have been my little cheerleaders and my absolute heroes.

And is it true that your husband turned shop fitter during lockdown?

My husband has always strongly supported my aspirations and he installed all the lights with me alongside working full-time and managing his entire workforce remotely from his home office.

What have been the challenges so far in working for yourself?

The workload never really ends. There are times I feel that even if I worked 24/7, all the work would still not get done. For months I have been getting up at 6.30 am, for my morning run and not getting to bed again until at least 1.30 am, sometimes later. But I am doing what I love and that makes it all worthwhile. Waking up every morning excited about the day ahead is something money cannot buy.

And what about the benefits?

I get to do what I love, very close to home and within easy reach of my children’s schools.

This means I will always be the person to do school drop off and pick up. How many people are fortunate enough to have a job that ticks all those boxes?

How is business going so far and are you happy with it since you launched?

I am thrilled with the response and how busy we have been. Our main customers tend to be interior designers and we have already been contacted about projects as far as Austria and even Saudi Arabia. During lockdown we sent

orders out to Belgium, Sweden, Turkey, London and many local addresses.

Why do you think it is so essential to invest in good lighting?

I hope our beautiful lights speak for themselves when you visit our gallery or view our virtual tour on our mobile app. Mainly, investing in good lighting gives you quality, durability and impact.

You also stock some local brands in store, why do you think it is so important to support others?

I will always share and support local brands I love. Let’s support each other and not pull each other apart. That is the only way independent businesses like us have a chance of surviving, especially during these unprecedented times. Plus, it’s so much nicer and more fun facing the world when you ‘hold hands’ with other inspirational small businesses. There are so many opportunities to learn from each other and grow as a business together.

Are you developing a good relationship with any independent interior designers from the area?

Yes, in fact our main customers are interior designers. It has been tricky for people in that industry during lockdown and I am grateful for all the work they continue to send my way. As a way of giving interior designers and lumière exposure during a time when being invited into people’s homes has become a little bit more challenging, I am running free webinars every Wednesday inviting a different local interiors-related business to come and give a live talk from lumière about their company and projects.

In your shop you also have a consultation area, why did you decide to include this and how is it working so far with clients?

Lighting takes careful planning and

consideration. Choosing your forever light should not be rushed and it is such an individual choice. We have a catalogue of over 3000 lights so I wanted to offer a relaxed space where we could offer free lighting consultations to customers and where interior designers and property developers could bring their clients and spread their mood boards and lighting plans right out across the table. I had this vivid vison of there being this constant hive of creative activity and brainstorming in that space. Since we are currently only open part-time until September, we have been urging customers to book a lighting consultation slot. It seems to be a big hit and we have rarely seen that space not being used which makes me very happy. lumière is so much more than just a shop, you have an online presence and have invested in clever app plus webinar talks and also sell other desirable pieces such as candles and glassware. Why did you decide to add these elements into the mix?

I wanted lumière to be a destination showroom where both residential and trade customers could come to buy an eclectic mix of high-end homeware goods and gain inspiration on so many different levels. I am hoping more designers will use us rather than travel into London too. The lumière app offers our trade customers a tool for discussing lighting with their residential customers and it offers our own residential customers flexibility, in light of current restrictions, especially for our customers abroad.

You’ve had some special cards illustrated to sell in the shop in order to remember two friends of yours and raise money for the Hospice in the Weald. Tell us why you decided to this…

In 2018 I lost two of my best friends to cancer. The Hospice in the Weald looked after them both so well that I promised myself I would do something in return for that wonderful charity one day. This is the first of many charity campaigns I plan to run. It has been very special having cards with my friends’ names on them in-store. It feels like they have been part of this adventure with me.

Why did you choose the name lumière?

In French lumière means light and as part of my degree in politics and translation, I read

about the fascinating “siècle des lumiéres” (the enlightenment period in 18th century France). This was a time when people began to question the status quo, challenge the norm and from this era emerged a number of ‘philosophes’ (philosophers/ forwardthinkers). This new wave spread to the rest of Europe and lead to huge political events such as the French Revolution. What better name for a space I hoped to transform into not just a lighting gallery but a hub for a variety of creative activity?

And what’s the significance of your trademark turquoise colour?

The colour turquoise is thought to be a lucky colour in many Middle Eastern cultures and it reminds me of the sea in Corsica where I spent many childhood summers with family.

It also happens to be the colour of my favourite ring which was given to me by my mother-in-law as a graduation gift. I worked full-time throughout uni to support myself and this ring always serves as a reminder that hard work pays off. I had the paint mixed specially to match my ring.

WHY I LOVE TUNBRIDGE WELLS Melissa Bandtock

How long have you been in Tunbridge Wells and why did you and your husband make the move here?

In 2007 I booked a quad biking experience as a gift for my then boyfriend just outside Tunbridge Wells. We were a bit early for so decided to venture into town for the first time. We instantly fell in love with the feel and look of it and visited again at Christmas. When my boyfriend proposed to me shortly after, we decided to move out of South London to get married and start a family. Tunbridge Wells seemed the perfect choice!

Where’s your favourite place to shop?

I don’t want to upset anyone by leaving them out because I try to mainly shop locally. Instead I am going to tell you which two shops I found most inspirational during lockdown. Those are Bod and Ted in Tunbridge Wells and Maisie K Boutique in Cranbrook. When lockdown was announced they did not fall into a heap of despair mourning what once was, instead they took to social media. Sophie at Bod and Ted hosted live evening sales via Insta stories once a week and the owner of Maisie K Boutique did a video on her doorstep about an outift every single day.

Hats off ladies.You are amazing and inspirational.

And to eat out?

Sushi from Kiko or Kitsu- they were our weekend take away treat during lockdown.

The staff always smile and the food is always delicious.

If I want somewhere a bit more intimate the Town House is perfect and they have a brilliant DJ on the weekend for those of you who like a bit of old school Reggae and R&B like me.

And for coffee or cocktails?

The Ivy make incredible cocktails and I don’t drink much coffee but I really love the Juliet’s Tumeric fizz!

Finally, where’s the best place to go locally in order to get away from it all?

I love the sea so we escape to a house on Camber beach as a family once a year. On my own, more locally, I love attending private yoga studios with stunning views like the Yoga House, Flow or Kingdom.

When life gets a bit stressful or if I feel the need for grounding, I treat myself to reiki or a massage with one of my holistic healers, preferably in a cabin in the woods.

As much as I love exploring and travelling, first and foremost though my home is actually my sanctuary.

When the coronavirus crisis hit, popular local stylist Victoria Geneviève was quick to think how she could not only keep her business alive, but still communicate with her loyal clients. Here she tells Eileen Leahy how she did it

W

hen your career is based on face-toface contact with people and working with the retail sector daily, a complete lockdown triggered by a world health pandemic would pretty much put you straight out of business.

Happily this has not been the case for personal stylist Victoria Geneviève who has been running her image consultancy Victoria

Geneviève Styling for the past 15 years.

The London College of Fashion graduate and mother of two from Tunbridge Wells immediately went into survival mode at the end of March and was quick to think on her well shod feet about how she would keep her beloved styling business going – in a safe and socially distanced manner.

Victoria, who has worked in the fashion industry since 2004 and is one of the area’s best known stylists, had

the clever idea of switching her sartorial offering online.

These started initially with styling sessions via Skype which gradually evolved into very successful weekly Zoom ‘parties’ which for many here in Tunbridge Wells became an essential must-see. So apart from the obvious financial reason, why did Victoria decide to remodel her business?

“It came through my need to connect with my clients and support them as well as local businesses and

I think my passion for fashion is very clear to all my customers

independent designers,” she explains.

Initially Victoria hosted the Kitch events by herself but as lockdown eased she was able to invite friends and fashion fans down to have a styling session which others could watch online.

Roast monkfish tails, chorizo, lentil and vegetable cassoulet Ingredients 2 monkfish tails (any white fish will do here) 1 onion, diced 2 cloves of garlic, diced Half a ring of chorizo, diced 1 courgette, diced Handful of mushrooms, diced 1 can of lentils 100ml vegetable stock 30g butter Fresh parsley, tomato puree, lemon Method 1. Heat the oven to 180 2. Dice the onion and garlic and cook on a low heat for a few minutes. Add the diced courgette and mushrooms and mix well. Then add in half of a diced chorizo ring. Add in the stock and a squirt of tomato puree and simmer.

3. Place the monkfish tails on two slices of lemon on a baking tray, season and roast for 10 minutes before allowing to rest for 5 minutes. Meanwhile, stir a can of lentils into the vegetables.

4. Whilst the fish is resting, melt the butter in a pan and add in a handful of diced parsley. Stir well. Serve the cassoulet in bowls followed by the fish and top with the parsley butter

Roasted rainbow trout, kale, pea and courgette risotto Ingredients 1 onion 200g arborio risotto rice 1 courgette, diced 700ml stock A few kale leaves, chopped 1 handful of frozen peas 2 trout fillets 1 knob of butter 50g grated cheddar

3. Stir the cheese into the risotto and plate up. Arrange the crumbled trout on top of the risotto.

Method 1. Dice an onion and fry on a gentle heat with the butter. Add the rice, mix well then add a ladleful of stock, the kale and the diced courgette. Keep adding ladle after ladle until all stock is absorbed 2. Meanwhile, season the trout, place on two slices of lemon on a baking tray and roast at 180 for 10 minutes.

Chicken supreme, tarragon and garlic mash with a tarragon, cream and white wine sauce Ingredients 2 Chicken supremes (breast is also fine) 4 potatoes 3 cloves of garlic Half a glass of white wine 75ml chicken stock A bunch of tarragon 25ml cream

Method 1. Season the supremes and fry skin down for 10 minutes in a pan. After 10 minutes flip the chicken, add the stock and fry for another 15-20 until cooked through.

2. Meanwhile, peel and slice the potatoes, boil then mash along with the garlic and some chopped tarragon. Keep warm.

3. Remove the chicken from the pan and allow to rest for 5 minutes.

In the same pan add a knob of butter, the cream, white wine and some chopped tarragon. Cook for two minutes.

4. Put the mash on the plate, top with the chicken then pour the lovely sauce all over.

Spicy chilli salmon ramen Ingredients 2 salmon steaks 1 onion Baby sweetcorn 1 handful of mushrooms 1 large handful of frozen peas A few pieces of broccoli 500ml vegetable stock 2 nests of wholegrain noodles 2 large teaspoons miso paste For the marinade 3 teaspoons soy sauce 1 teaspoon rice vinegar 1 teaspoon hot sauce/sriracha 1 teaspoon honey

Tuna steak, mango and chilli salsa, black rice, charred spring onion, coriander and sweetcorn Ingredients 300g black rice 2 tuna steaks Half a mango, diced 1 tomato, diced A few jalapenos, diced 2 limes Splash of vinegar A bunch of spring onions 100g sweetcorn Cumin, paprika, fresh coriander Method 1. Boil the rice per packet instructions.

Mix together in a bowl the mango, tomato, jalapenos, juice of 1 lime, a splash of vinegar and some diced coriander. Refrigerate until you need it.

2. In a wide bowl mix a teaspoon each of cumin and paprika, juice of half a lime and a pinch of salt. Rub into the tuna and leave to stand for a few minutes.

3. Griddle the spring onions then add the tuna to the pan, cooking for 2 minutes each side.

4. Mix the sweetcorn with the remaining lime juice and a little coriander in a bowl. Place the rice on a plate, top with the spring onions, tuna and then the mango salsa 20 | August 2020 | SO Magazine

Method 1. Mix the marinade together, place the salmon on a baking tray and pour half of the marinade over the two salmon steaks. Roast for 12 minutes at 180.

2. Bring the stock to the boil and add the miso and the rest of the marinade.

Dice the onion, slice the sweetcorn, mushrooms and broccoli and add to the bowl. Add the peas.

3. Cook the noodles separately then drain and place in two large soup bowls. Remove the salmon from the oven, break up and place on the noodles then add the broth and vegetables. Easy!

Anything that you wouldn’t normally have with the little ones Foodie hacks to upgra de your dinner Sauces: A sauce really bri ngs a dish together. Make a sauce (or deglaze) in two minutes by using the pan you’ve just cooked your meat or fish in. Add in some wine, some stock, some milk or cre herbs and you’ll be amaze am and some d at what you can do whilst your meat or fish rests Crumbs: Sprinkle a littl e something on top of your dish to play with textures. Dice cooked bacon to make a crumb, or make a gremolata by whizzing a slice of toast with some parsley and grated lemon peel Add some fruit: Summe r in Kent and we have fresh fruit coming ou t of our ears. Not only is fruit so good for you but it’s bright and beautiful and will rea lly add to the visual impact of your dish. Due to having to postpone his popular Pub in the Park this year celebrity chef Tom Kerridge has come up with a clever socially distanced alternative event: a ‘Drive In Garden Party’.

or the past three summers foodies, fans of artisanal produce and music lovers have gathered at Dunorlan Park for Tom Kerridge’s three-day celebration of gourmet food and groovy tunes. So popular has this event proved to be it was coming back bigger and even better for 2020 - until Covid-19 put paid to all that.

After having to postpone seven Pub in the Park events around the country to 2021, celebrity Michelin star chef Tom Kerridge decided that the party still had to happen - albeit in a more considered way due to coronavirus.

First up was a series of ‘drive in’ dates at Hever Castle last month where Tom and his team served up a whole host of tasty treats and delivered them direct to the car doors of visitors while they watched a classic movie.

Thanks to that event’s success Tom decided that he’d roll out a similar one – this time though at Eridge Park and with a number

of live music acts too.

Taking place from September 18 – 20 the ‘Drive In Garden Party’ is a chance for people to enjoy Michelin quality food and music in a comfortable and socially distanced format. Tom will also stage garden parties at Henley and Knebworth earlier in September.

Headline acts include local lads Keane, Groove Amada, Gabrielle, Soul II Soul, Stereo MCs and Squeeze.

A Garden Party spokesperson told SO magazine “it’s an event that’s designed for these unusual times: an innovative way of enjoying amazing food, a great lineup of live music and all from the safety of your own private enclosure!”

Visitors simply ‘park up, pop out and party’ with a car-full of friends and family, whilst enjoying delicious food and top music in their very own socially distanced ‘garden’ in the grounds of Eridge Park which boasts 3,000 acres of stunning grounds thus

ensuring social distancing can still be adhered to.

Each visiting party has a private enclosure in which to park their car, spread out and enjoy food and tunes ‘Pub in the Park style’.

And although there won’t be as many epicurean offerings as usual there will still be a top quality choice of five different restaurants; courtesy of Michelin starred chefs including Tom Kerridge, Atul Kochhar and Paul Ainsworth.

So what’s Tom hoping to achieve by doing all this? “For people who have been to our Pub in the Park festivals before, Drive-In Garden party will have a really similar vibe.

“It is really great food, brilliant music acts and at Garden Party you get to drive into your own private area so you can hang out in the garden, have a dance, and eat some incredible food. And most importantly you can feel safe whilst you are doing it too.

“We remain committed to providing great food and drink events throughout these difficult and complicated times. But we’re also looking forward to returning to a full tour in 2021.”

o many fond childhood memories are decorated with images of Cornwall: sliding barefoot over silky moss while twirling nets in rock pools; colliding with frothing, angry waves then sprinting to the shelter of a windbreak; breathing sea air, licking lips and delighting in a taste tangier than a packet of salt ‘n’ vinegar crisps.

For most of us, England’s glorious southwest coast will be forever seen through rosetinted glasses, so it’s no surprise we’re all grappling for a slice of sure-fire summertime nostalgia in these uncertain times.

Cornwall is set to be one of the most popular staycation holiday destinations this year, with honeypots like Falmouth and St Ives already experiencing a surge of visitors on sunny days.

Just take a casual scroll through Instagram: from families swinging buckets and spades, to avid hikers stretching lockdown legs, and even glamorous trendsetters swapping Mustique’s cocktail bars for the surf shacks of Polzeath - everyone is migrating west.

friends, I’m off on my own adventure, determined to find some secluded spots. Eager to explore both coast and countryside, I’ve chosen a base inland at Southern Halt holiday park, close to the village of Dobwalls, not far from the southeast fringes of Bodmin Moor.

Dinner is prepared in a kitchen looking out to a glinting golden barley field and eaten on an open deck, washed with sunshine at the right times of day It’s an area where winding roads weave through a labyrinth of hedgerows, lined with open-air larders selling fresh eggs, jams and sweet, ripe tomatoes in exchange for coins dropped into an honesty box.

Tucked behind meadows and farm fields, a collection of wooden cabins is scattered around a landscaped area of gardens and ponds; some are available for rent, others can

be purchased as holiday homes. Set in the far corner and smelling of sweet pine, my two-bedroom property is shielded by tree boughs and wildflowers - providing much more privacy than other plots on the site.

Given a code to unlock the front gate and access a door key, I sidestep any human interaction to enter my temporary home. Named iGames, the new build has been designed as a play arena for adults and kids. A blackedout indoor cinema has reclining lazy boys with cup holders, while a games room features a pool table, darts board and arcade machine hosting Eighties classics like Pac-Man and Donkey Kong.

Although these retro references might be lost on a younger crowd, they elicit whoops of joy from my 40-something gamer friends.

Dinner is prepared in a kitchen looking out to a glinting golden barley field and eaten on an open deck, washed with sunshine at the right times of day. When we can’t muster the effort to cook, there’s the option of a visit to The Old Mill restaurant on sister site Stonerush (about 20 minutes’ drive away).

crowds when we visit fishing village Polperro later that afternoon, it’s a fraction of the number typically expected at this time of year.

Squeezing between the higgledypiggledy pile of cottages where buoys dangle from doorways and washing lines are strung up like bunting, I overhear local publicans and restaurateurs discuss whether they’re going to bother opening this year.

Pacing the quayside, disappointed seagulls look equally fraught, lamenting a lack of gullible victims to mug.

Although not great for the economy (or greedy birds), a lack of tourists does have one benefit: given space to breathe, Polperro becomes much more than a postcard setting; it has a life of its own.

Aside from its mighty boulders, Millook Haven Beach is empty. Hungry waves gorge at the shoreline, but hunkered into the folds of Penalt cliff, we still find calm in pockets where smuggler’s may once have hidden their treasures

Recently reopened with social distancing measures in place, the cosy, calm waterside space serves a menu of decent local dishes. Numbers are limited, surfaces are constantly cleaned, and one-way systems have been put in place. Yet staff still manage a friendly, upbeat greeting - even if smiles are hidden behind masks.

Then it’s back to the lodge to score a bull’s eye, rescue a digitalised damsel, or watch an Attenborough documentary in full HD. Creature comforts provide amusement, but Cornwall’s real 26 | August 2020 | SO Magazine

entertainment lies outside.

Rising from lime green grounds and exposed to big, open skies, Bodmin Moor’s prehistoric stones are blotted with slow-growing lichens and wrapped in mystery. A unique sight in England, three adjacent stone circles make up The Hurlers, thought to be Neolithic and Bronze Age ceremonial and funerary monuments, which can be found a 10-minute drive from Southern Halt.

Whatever their purpose, powers from the past have certainly carried into the present. Walking around the

ring-a-ring of granite roses, I’m struck by the stillness. There’s something so reassuring about rocks: solid, reliable, seemingly impervious to time.

A short walk away, in a quarry surrounded by 19th century tin and copper mining debris, granite tor the Cheesewring has a similar effect.

The stack of miraculously balanced flat stones is supposedly a result of weathering, but I prefer a legend suggesting it was the work of a giant’s hand.

Other Cornish sites, however, are already filled to their capped brim.

The myth-and-mist-cloaked castle of Tintagel on the north coast is only allowing 900 visitors a day (25% of the numbers they would typically see in July), and tickets are already selling out for the summer. Thanks to a new bridge installed by English Heritage last year, it’s easy for people to spread across clifftop ruins made famous by tales of King Arthur.

Although only remnants of the site remain, gaps can be filled with imagination. Regardless of whether there’s any truth to stories of the sword in the stone, it’s still fun as an adult to make believe.

Tickets aren’t required to explore caves below the castle, so to avoid inevitable crowds, we head further north along the coast towards Bude, in search of a quieter beach. While obvious map-marked spots are busy, less conspicuous coves and pebbly shores are undisturbed. After driving along narrow back roads almost overtaken by vegetation, we reach a steep drop looking out to the sea.

Taking a roller-coaster bend to the bottom, we find the only possible parking spot available on a grass verge.

Kitchen Meet the designer putting a contemporary twist on confidential: traditional craftsmanship Charlotte Williams has a passion for designing bespoke, luxury, made-tomeasure, handcrafted and handpainted kitchens people want to spend time in. Here the Speldhurst based designer tells Rachael Hale how lockdown changed her business and shares her tips for those dreaming of a new kitchen

What do you love most about running your own business?

The flexibility to be there for my girls, Josie, 9, and Florence, 7. To drop them off at school and have those random conversations on the way to Brownies, while being able to work around them and consult with clients in the evenings.

How Did Charlotte Williams Design begin?

Watching my own kitchen design become a reality 11 years ago was the start of a real love affair. I just loved the whole process and spent weeks getting the details right. I then started helping friends and realised not everyone can visualise a space like I can. I took the leap in 2017 to start my own business and Charlotte Williams Design was born.

And what are the key highlights of your job?

The moment I look at a design and think, ‘That’s it. That’s the best I can do. It ticks all the boxes for my client and they’re going to love it’. Then it’s the first day of installation when everything is unpacked, it’s like Christmas! Finally, it’s seeing my design brought to life and handing over my clients’ dream kitchen to them. It’s an amazing feeling.

What’s the most unusual item you’ve ever used for inspiration?

One of my clients was trying to choose a blue to paint her island when she received a coloured envelope in the post. She fell in love with the tone and I was able to match it. And the colour for a walk-in pantry I created was inspired by a bright pink highchair sitting in my clients’ kitchen. That’s the great thing about being independent, I can source anything my client wants.

Has lockdown changed the way you run your business?

I always give my clients’ installations individual, on site attention so lockdown has been particularly challenging on that front. The safety of my clients and tradespeople comes first, so I’m constantly adapting our

guidelines for the latest regulations.

That said, one of the biggest changes has come via Zoom. It doesn’t beat meeting people face to face, but it’s allowed me to continue carrying out consultations and presentations. It works so much better than expected!

I’ve also started using Instagram.

I’ve wanted to do it for a long time but I’m a perfectionist. I would agonise for ages over what to publish and then not do it. I’m now working with Jennifer Cooper (Time Saver) who helps me plan my content. It’s a collaborative approach and crucially she’s the one that hits ‘post’!

How has it affected you personally?

Home schooling has been an enormous challenge and I dread the question of ‘What’s for lunch?’ The hardest part was back in May when

They were so upset they wouldn’t be able to see their family and friends but my husband, Peter, and I created themed treasure hunts that ended up being brilliant.

Do you think lockdown has changed the way people are using their kitchens?

Definitely. People have been cooking more because they’ve had to and with more people being at home at the same time, the experience has highlighted problems such as awkward layouts and difficulties with storage.

It takes no crystal ball to predict this. As individuals and collectively, we subconsciously resist change until we have no choice. This is how our brain protects us from the unknown. When change is forced through circumstance, new neurological synapses are formed as we learn to adapt. The subconscious is creative, flexible and has superpowers when confronted with new challenges.

Our best asset at times like these are the young. Often maligned and always underestimated, they are our greatest hope for a prosperous future.

Brain power is at its peak in early adulthood. The young are more likely to take risks and step up to new challenges. Perhaps there is an opportunity now for parents, educators, employers and politicians to find new ways to motivate and empower the young to tap into their energy and brilliance.

How to maintain work, life and balance as we return to the new normal

During lockdown, Salomons-based hypnotherapist Karen Martin provided online sessions for everyone grappling with the stresses of living through a pandemic. Her regular column is therefore focused this month on returning to work - or expanding your professional horizons – and how you can embrace it

N

ow the wheels of commerce and industry have started turning again, there will be many offices, factories, shops, restaurants and bars where the doors will stay shut and the lights out.

The social and economic landscape has changed in a way that affects us all and we’re only now starting to emerge blinking into a post Covid world.

There has been a lot of ‘unprecedented’ this and that, generating a tsunami of speculation and anxiety about future consequences. Anything unprecedented causes change and uncertainty, both guaranteed to create fear and insecurity.

Billions of pounds have been showered on furloughed workers and blighted businesses to stave off the storm clouds of a recession predicted to be worse than anything in living memory. Whilst the spring sunshine gave some respite from the daily grind for those unable to work, many of them will have no jobs to return to or their ‘new normal’ will take some adjusting to.

JOBS FOR THE YOUNG The biggest job losses have been amongst the young working in entry

level jobs, often in the hard-hit hospitality and retail sectors. Many of the disenfranchised young adults I’ve seen in recent months are stuck at home with their parents, isolated from friends, without structure, order, routine or purpose in their daily life.

Screen time is their main occupation and they often become nocturnal, rarely seeing daylight before midday and becoming progressively more anxious and depressed.

It’s hard to give them any reason for optimism or hope when there’s so little to look forward to. Chancellor Rishi Sunak has pledged £2bn to ‘kickstart’ job creation for young employees by paying under-25s minimum wages for six month work placements. There will be more work coaches at job centres and cash incentives for companies to take on new apprentices.

WHAT ABOUT THE FURLOUGHED?

In the midst of lockdown, we’ve all had a bit of time to reflect on how we structure our lives and which values are most important. We are on the cusp of a revolution in the way we work, earn a living and spend our money. Being jobless post lockdown will be nothing like the picnicking in

the park while furlough funds flow.

As well as the unintentionally unemployed seeking new opportunities in a shrinking jobs market, there will be those who choose not to go back to jobs they hated competing for fewer vacancies.

Normal life has been turned upside down, providing the chance to press the pause button and think about resetting our lives.

Furloughed workers who have stayed healthy during lockdown and have secure, enjoyable jobs to go back to are the lucky ones. They've had an opportunity to enjoy quality family time and do all the things they never have time for when working.

Many have been able to save or clear debts as there’s been little to spend money on. Some have seen this as a golden opportunity to explore career changes or take the leap into a new business venture.

NOW WHAT?

Forecasts vary about how many will have jobs to return to when the furlough scheme is wound down at the end of October. Billions of pounds of public money has been pledged in order to protect existing jobs and create new ones.

There has been tremendous concern about mental health issues exacerbated by Coronavirus and the havoc it has caused. Investing in services to treat them is one way of fixing the anxiety pandemic.

Another is to tap into the energy created by fear to achieve dynamic change and progress.

We’ve all experienced the thrill of a roller coaster ride or a scary movie.

Controlled exposure to perceived danger is exciting and powerfully stimulating. Whereas anxiety robs us of the ability to think clearly, all our senses are heightened and brainpower accelerated by the demands of enduring or surviving a threat to our safety or wellbeing. This is why technological and social progress is so rapid during and after apocalyptic events.

My work as a hypnotherapist falls loosely into two camps: helping people to ‘fix’ thoughts, feelings and behaviours created by anxiety or enabling them to fulfil their potential by tapping into their best resources and using them to achieve their goals.

In unprecedented times of change, as individuals and on a wider scale, we are all being challenged to make changes for the better. This is how the worst of times can create the best of times. It is possible for all of us to benefit from living through unprecedented times by seeking out new precedents for happiness, wellbeing and success.

WHY GARDENING IS A PATHWAY TO HAPPINESS SO magazine’s resident gardening guru Victoria Truman reveals why so many of us have turned into keen gardeners since the coronavirus crisis

ince March the pace of life has slowed down considerably due to the Covid-19 health pandemic. When we were in full lockdown it suddenly became for many a perfect time to become more aware of what is around us - from the unbelievable daily birdsong to leaves waking up from winter and unfurling on the trees as spring was ushered in.

With everybody staying at home lots of people were indulging in far simpler activities including gardening.

As a result outdoor spaces and gardens became a haven however big or small a space and a rewarding way to occupy our time.

Gardening has always had so many positive benefits for our mental and physical health and now due to the coronavirus crisis many more people are aware of them.

It’s a great way to keep active and fit for example as it serves as a whole-body workout.

Stretching to prune or weed, bending to dig and pushing and pulling a lawnmower, you will

work most of your muscles and certainly feel it at the end of a long day spent outside.

Gardening is also a great way to improve your mood and also get a daily dose of vitamin D just remember the sunscreen.

When homeschooling started in March many parents had to juggle working from home with becoming teachers and so gardening became an ideal activity to do with children.

VALUE And not just to keep them active. Gardening combines maths, science and nature.

Children can plant out seeds and learn how to care for them from watering to pricking out and planting on and ultimately harvesting and eating their produce.

During lockdown neighbours also benefited with many reconnecting with one another.

Many started talking to each other more, sharing gardening tips, asking advice and pooling ideas in order to make their gardens a more inviting and useable space.

Thanks to the amount of time

people had on their hands due to the health crisis – not to mention the glorious weather - outside spaces became so much more than just somewhere you planted flowers.

They were suddenly retreats where online yoga classes took place via Zoom or burgeoning mini allotments as more people started to plant their own fruit and vegetables.

As a result lots of people have started investing more in their external space.

One of the initial victims of the Covid crisis was the horticulture industry which was forced to shut down but thankfully most have been able to bounce back since reopening. And they have come into their own during this time now that people can see the value in their garden and outdoor space like never before and are willing to spend on furniture, containers, outdoor kitchens and fire pits.

I hope this trend continues long after Covid-19 disappears.

As a nation the British have always been very proud of their gardens and I hope that as a small silver lining to this terrible health crisis many more will come out of it now cherishing their gardens - and the great outdoors.
