LOCAL HITS
& LIVE
Paul Dunton reflects on what he's declared to be the best Local & Live festival yet thanks to record audience numbers, fantastic weather and brilliant musical performances
aving now had time to catch my breath, I thought I would take this opportunity to reflect on the recent Local & Live Music Festival. Following on from the success of the 2021 event, we have spent the past year working towards the goal of once again utilising Calverley Grounds and the various fringe venues that included The Forum and The Sussex Arms. Funding has proven very difficult to come by over the past year which I am sure is a knock on effect of the current financial climate. I sense there is still much uncertainty still lingering following the after effects of brexit and Covid enforced lockdowns. Local & Live is a free entry non ticketed event which costs close to £60,000 to stage and mid July we found ourselves at a crossroads, our projected funding deficit was well over £20,000 and a decision needed to be made as to whether we cancel or scale down to a smaller indoor format. However to our pleasant surprise the tables were unexpectedly turned at the end of July when local business Maxipay Accounting Services signed to be headline sponsor. This significant financial boost coupled with grants from The BID, numerous sponsorships and donations from the local business community and support and assistance from TWBC effectively saved the day and Local & Live 2022 could therefore go ahead as planned! My primary hope was that Local & Live would go on be a highlight of the summer, something for everyone to look forward to and enjoy, for the musicians involved, the local traders our sponsors and the local community. Despite all the difficulties we faced over the past year, I really enjoyed organising Local & Live

Armstrong, Paul Coe, Stephen Goodwin and Jason Dormon. Their collective support has been integral to the festival's success. Huge thanks is also owed to all our amazing volunteers, who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to keep the event running smoothly and to plan. They are all individuals from the local community who gave up their time over the weekend to help our cause.
Calverley Grounds is definitely its natural home and sometimes it is the little touches, having a face painter, arts & crafts, the food & drink quarter, various stalls and stands, all of which help to embellish the event and give it the family friendly festival vibe. Local & Live 2022 could not have happened without the help of my fellow trustees. Peter Taylor, Barney Jameson, Nigel Bent, Charles

On the photography side of things I am indebted to Nigel Martin, Sally Anne Low and David Warren for all of their hard work covering the event across the four days capturing memories and moments to inspire and document the 17th edition of Local & Live. They kindly give their time for free and do a fantastic job. I would also like to award a special vote of thanks to all of the musicians who performed and all the Local & Live Angels, Maxipay Accounting Services, our diamond sponsors - Cripps Pemberton Greenish, Rotosound, Berry & Lamberts and Sankeys. All of our food, drink and crafts traders, The Tunbridge Wells Forum and The Sussex Arms, Tunbridge Wells Borough Council,The BID and Tunbridge Wells Together, all of our big screen sponsors, David & Elisa Briers, Catherine Hazel, Lauren Grant, Frances Hocking, Black Deer Festival, Sean de Burca, Friends of Calverley Grounds, BBC Radio Kent and our media partner the Times of Tunbridge Wells for all their support and assistance. Roll on 2023!
2022 and I feel that we now have a solid festival team and format all in place that will enable the event to develop and thrive for years to come. Calverley Grounds once again proved to be a wonderful location as a central point for the event and I know all the musicians involved really enjoyed performing on such a wonderful stage to many thousands of people. Thankfully, the weather gods gently smiled on us, I can’t express how relieved I was to see the sun shining even if it was in small doses! The event’s attendance hinges on good weather to a degree although saying that, come wind, rain or shine, Local & Live has a dedicated following that I know would turn up no matter how inclement the conditions. It is this whole hearted support for the event that gives me the confidence and belief to keep doing it every year and I am ever appreciative to everyone who came along and supported this year’s festival. The atmosphere at this year's event was something very special, perhaps the best yet, we felt so much support from the audiences and there were so many amazing performances especially from our headline acts, Noble Jacks, Suncharmer and Dull Knife. It was also wonderful to see the likes of young up and GeordiethisElliotsinger-songwriterscomingGrahamopenyear'seventandHunter perform her first ever festival gig. That is what Local & Live is all about, showcasing a melting pot of creative grassroots music from seasoned campaigners like the mentionedaboveheadline acts to new artists making their first steps. This year's programme featured acts of all ages, incredibly our youngest performers were just 12 years old. In recent years I feel Local & Live has now developed a more laid back relaxed festival vibe.

Talented wedding and portrait photographer Dee Airey opened hew new studio on The Pantiles last month. Here she reveals to Eileen Leahy her passion for unposed photography, why she’s so happy to now be based in Tunbridge Wells and details of a special launch event that’s happening over the weekend of September 17 and 18… tepping over the thresholdsmart and into the pristine Dee onstudioPhotographyAireylocatedThePantiles, I immediately ask Dee if I should remove my shoes. The reason? It’s just so gorgeous and luxurious – think plush, wall-towall deep pile cream carpeting, sumptuous button-back sofas and bright white walls which are adorned with sprigs of pretty green foliage and lots of Dee’s beautiful images which capture everything from perfect wedding days, excited parents-to-be and giggling young families. “I just love things to be light and bright – I find it helps to capture people at their best,” smiles Dee who specialises in wedding and portraiture photography. Ushering me through the beautiful reception area towards her equally lovely studio, which is located at the back of her new premises, Dee explains that although her former studio in Crowborough was decorated exactly the same, it’s her Pantiles pad that has something really special about it. “I honestly couldn’t believe it when I came across it,” she says of the stunning space - which is handily located right next door to The Pantiles Bride boutique. “I actually came here to do a knew it was still an impossible dream. One day I spoke this out loud to my business coach and then did my usual trawl on the internet and there it was – my shop on The Pantiles! And I just thought ‘Wow!’ So, I sent an email to Targetfollow (who own The Pantiles) and they replied immediately. I thought ‘Oops I’m going to have to do something about this now!’ They told me where it was and I said ‘I don’t need to see it – I really want it.’ That was in March this year and I got the lease through in May.” From there Dee says it was all hands on deck in terms of getting the studio up and running.
Dee goes onto explain that she specialises in natural, un-posed, relaxed images that capture her clients’ true personality. She says that this approach helps her to get the most out of her subjects.
“I’m camera shy myself, so I understand how much of a challenge a lot of people find it to ‘switch on’. My real skill is in putting people at ease and helping them forget the camera is there, so they enjoy their big day or their portrait session. I guess it’s my job to make people feel at ease in front of the camera. For me it’s about creating natural images that capture the essence of people’s relationships and who they are.”
“I’m all about happy weddingsthings:andfamily”
“I hired a big contractor and they had the whole place gutted and decorated within about five weeks. It was absolutely amazing.” Dee also reveals the reason she wanted a proper bricks and mortar presence.
S
“I couldn’t believe it when I saw my dream space on The Pantiles was available”
The new portrait studio is where Dee and her team, which now comprises of a couple of additional photographers, will be capturing individual and family portraits for clients to treasure forever. And the reception, she says, is a ‘beautiful, welcoming space for couples to relax in and shoot for the charity Taylor Made Dreams in 2019. I instantly fell in love with it. I remember saying to the videographer at the time ‘Oh wouldn’t it be great to get a space like this?’ But as nobody gets a spot on The Pantiles I never gave it another thought.” And yet it becomes clear from chatting more to Dee, who lives in Tonbridge, that serendipity had a big part to play for her and her photography business because when she was doing her ‘regular trawl’ of the internet three years later she spotted that her ideal premises was indeed up for grabs. “I’d done various jobs in Tunbridge Wells and believed that The Pantiles was where my business needed to be but I

“In January this year I thought to myself ‘I really want a shop front’. I know it’s not really the done thing anymore but I just wanted people to be able to walk past and have the opportunity to come in when they wanted to. I’m all about happy things: weddings and family so I wanted to showcase all that and also be in a good area. Internet advertising is fine but you don’t get a proper feel for things like photography without seeing it properly.”

discuss their big day’. Dee adds that she is genuinely excited about having opened the only wedding photography ‘shop’ on The Pantiles. And although it officially opened last month she will be hosting a special launch event over the weekend of September 17 and 18 when visitors will have the chance to win free portraits or enjoy an exclusive discount on wedding photography packages. During the course of our chat Dee does admit that she’s also ‘slightly terrified’ about her new venture but given the success she’s achieved in just a decade of being a professional photographer it would seem the business will only go from strength to strength given her lifelong passion for taking pictures.“I’vealways loved doing photography as a hobby but it was only when my husband bought me a photography course ten years ago that I thought about turning it into a business. I did it and never looked back. That course taught me that I had a skill.
If I
2. Find your comfort zone The last thing I want for you is to feel uncomfortable on your big day, so an engagement shoot is the best time for you to start getting comfortable. So when the special day arrives, you’ll be used to having me around.
“I feel my thing is grabbing people’s memories so when you look back you think ‘Oh yes of course, do you remember when that happened?’ So, when kids start rolling around on the floor or giggling at a family shoot that’s when I start taking pictures – it’s something to look back at and laugh at and feel something. That’s where the memories are made.”
Dee explains that the family element of her work evolved naturally from shooting people’s weddings.
“My creative style is very natural: there’s no bells and whistles or fancy gimmicks as I don’t like that at all. I tried it in the beginning but it didn’t work for me. All that made me feel uncomfortable because it’s not me. I look at my work and think “I don’t like posed shots. For me it’s about naturalcreatingimagesthatcapturetheessenceofpeople’srelationshipsandwhotheyare”
WHEN YOU PUT A RING ON IT WHY NOT CAPTURE IT IN PICTURES?
“I teach people that it takes a while to figure out who you are as a creative. You look back at your first images and think ‘Oh no!’ But the truth is you evolve as a creative until you find out who you are. When you start out you try to emulate other people but you can’t do that. So I’m just glad I found out who I am because it’s really comfortable.
4. Telling a love story Your engagement photos tell part of your love story, and these are useful for your wedding invitations or if you have a wedding website. These photos can get your friends, family and your guests into the spirit and excitement of your upcoming wedding.
‘that looks stunning’ but I haven’t posed people. Some people love all that but I don’t and most people’s testimonials say ‘Dee made me feel very at ease’. So I feel I’m achieving the thing I’m meant to do.
There are so many reasons to have an engagement shoot. Dee says she can’t think of any reason not to. “The best thing is, they can be a lot of fun and help to get you into the spirit of your wedding photography on your big day. You can dress up or dress down, the choice is yours.” Here are Dee’s top tips: 1. Getting to know you This is the best opportunity to get to know your wedding photographer and start to build a relationship. You might have several conversations over the phone or Zoom, but nothing can beat getting to know your photographer when their eyes are on you, behind the lens.
12 | September 2022 | SO magazine Cover feature
3. Natural selection On your engagement shoot natural movement around each other – or those cute moments together - will just come naturally with your photographer present. This means that by the big day, you’ll be acting absolutely instinctively. When you’re like this in front of the camera it really does show the love between you, and that’s the memory you want to take away with you.
5. Location, location, location Having an engagement shoot at your venue is a great time for you and your photographer to explore cute little spots around the venue that great photos can be taken. And you might already have some favourite spots that you can show your photographer. Rather than just planning to have wedding photos in those areas, it’s a good opportunity to have some engagement shots there too.
“I like to keep my wedding couples – forever if possible - so when they get pregnant or their first baby comes along and then the family grows it’s nice to see a business opportunity I jump in with both feet and make it work. And that’s what I did after completing the course.” Dee now has clients all over the country and is so passionate about what she does, she also has more than 500 students across the world whom she is now coaching online every week to create successful photography businesses of their own.

“There’s so much that happens on your wedding day, and telling your wedding day love story in photos is best done candidly, without any posing. Grooms getting ready, feeling vulnerable and full of nerves is an amazing memory to capture, and it cannot be staged. Brides and bridesmaids getting ready is often chaotic and fun filled. But once that dress goes on, the bride usually takes on a certain look and glow of elegance, she moves differently and this is what I strive to capture. It’s almost guaranteed that when I hand a bride her flowers, she’ll delicately look down at themand I hit the shutter!” capture those moments. That’s what gave me the idea of having a studio in the first place. I have people who have been with me for years but the thing is you don’t know what you are going into if you’re shooting in someone’s house. The light might be terrible or there’s no natural backdrop. With a studio you know the light will be good, it’s a designated space and families can come to me and flop on the sofa. Oh, and there’s also prosecco in the fridge so people can relax and hang out!” laughs Dee. “I think photographic memories are definitely more of a thing now than they ever were. We’ve all got phones and we’re all taking pictures on them all the time but we’re not taking memorable photos and you don’t necessarily look back on them. Since the pandemic I think lasting photographic memories have become even more special because the reality is that life can change at any moment. So I think it’s an important investment, especially “The truth is you evolve as a creative until you find out who you are. I’m just glad I found out who I am because it’s comfortable”really
“Your wedding is a big deal, and you both want to look and feel as awesome as possible. I believe the only way for you to truly feel great on your wedding day, is if you are left to just be yourselves. I’ve literally laughed out loud when I’ve heard a photographer say to a couple “look at each other and pretend you love each other”. Seriously I’ve heard that! The most love you will ever feel for each other will be on your wedding day, so you don’t have to pretend.”

“It’s all about being who you are.” now. Professional pictures are heirlooms unlike the snaps you take on your phone.” And it’s the pandemic that gave Dee the idea for the online coaching.“I’dbeen doing regular networking meetings but as soon as lockdown happened we moved these to Zooms but they’d often get moved around or cancelled and as I’m pretty military in terms of organising myself I decided to create a group that was specifically aimed at coaching photographers.” It’s from this private Facebook group where Dee found two key local people who are now helping her to run her business. “I found two amazing people from Tunbridge Wells and thought ‘I’d like you to start my team’. My goal is that people come into the shop and they are buying ‘Dee Airey’ photography. I’m the principal photographer and now have assistants who shoot in a similar natural, unposed style. I want a fully functional team within two years who I will train up to assist me in expanding the business. “Having the two people I’ve found and trained up means I can DEE AIREY

Dee says the hope is for her and her team to continue expanding the other shoots they do for Christmas, Valentine’s and Mother’s Day. “We’ve actually converted the basement into another fabulous space where I can run photography classesprofessionalsforandthosewantingtotake their hobby to the next level.” It would seem that Dee and her team have their sights firmly focused on great success for this new business I say. “I guess I want people to feel really special in front of the camera,” she smiles.
Sometimes just touching your album, or seeing it on your coffee table brings it all back. You don’t even have to open it up, its presence keeps your magical day alive in your hearts forever.

A bit further afield, the Daily Bread café in Rusthall has wonderful fresh bread and cakes. Where do you take people when they come to visit? I enjoy taking them to places such as The Amelia Scott, the High Street, Chapel Place, King Charles the Martyr church, The Pantiles and a country pub and walk - usually around Penshurst or Chiddingstone. Little people enjoy visiting Wellington Rocks and the Spa Valley Railway.
What’s the night life like where you live? We are so lucky as we live near the town centre so there are lots of restaurants and pubs nearby. St John’s Yard is probably where we go the most but I do like to try new places too. Recently I’ve tried The Hidden Well on St John’s Road and Cantuccio’s on Camden Road which I hadn’t even heard of before I got there, but it was totally packedTunbridgeout! Wells has a that’sThemostmusicfestivalfantasticandlivescene, notablyForum, soavenue that’s definitely worth checking out. On my current go-to list is The Glasshouse bar on Mount Ephraim: apparently the cocktails are out of this world. Where’s your favourite place to eat locally? I like the Bicycle Bakery for breakfast, The Plant Base for lunch, Juliet’s for tea, Soprano’s for a fun dinner out and Kitsu for eat-in or takeaway. That said, a lot of Firezza pizza and Uptown Kebabs seem to end up in our kitchen!
Where’s the best place to go for a Sunday stroll? I take my dog, Hamish (aka Hammy), up to Ashdown Forest. It’s so peaceful and I love the views there. The best place to get a cup of coffee? Even Flow on St John’s Road. It has lovely coffee and is very welcoming. It’s also dog-friendly and great for informal meetings – it’s a change of scene from working from home. In town, I like to support Hillbothorbusinesses,CulverdensoBill’sBasil, whicharelocatedonLimeRoadarefavourites.
Where do you live? I live in the Culverden area of Tunbridge Wells, near St John’s Road and Mount Ephraim. It is a great privilege to represent Culverden ward at Tunbridge Wells Borough Council. How long have you lived there and what made you decide to move? We have lived here 10 years. Before that we were at Mount Sion, up from the High Street. When we viewed our house, I was bewitched by the garden, which at the time was full of crocuses and had a pond teeming with tadpoles. I love this area and actually grew up on the next street, so it really feels like home. I had such a happy, safe and secure childhood here and I wanted the same for my own children.
This month SO chats to Justine Rutland about all the places she loves to support locally. Here the councillor at Tunbridge Wells Borough Council and Cabinet Member for Tunbridge Wells Town and Local Areas, whose portfolio includes economic development and tourism, tells us all about her favourite spots to stroll, shop and socialise…

“Maybe because it’s where I grew up here, and was very happy, I feel emotionally connected to the town” Bill’s restaurant
What’s your favourite shop locally? The International Shop on Grosvenor Road is fab. It’s a grocer’s and being in there, even for a few minutes, is like being transported to places all over the world. I’m not much of a cook but trying new ingredients definitely makes it more fun. I also love the Green Duck for presents, Camden Butchers for its friendly service and advice, Locality for fresh food and bread, the Oxfam Bookshop for books and cards, and Jeremy’s Home Store for eleventy billion other things! I avoid shopping online and buy everything I can in the town. Camden Road has a brilliant mix of independent shops and services, and so do Rusthall and Southborough high streets.

SO Magazine | SepteMber 2022 | 17 Community Are there any nice views nearby?
Where’s the best place to meet friends and socialise?
What do you do when you spend a weekend or day off in the local area?
So many – but then that’s the benefit of living in a hilly town! Happy Valley is beautiful and a lovely walk through Nevill Park and Rusthall Common. Mount Ephraim near the Royal Wells gives you a wonderful view over the town, including a lot of the historic conservation area. Looking the other way, you can see to the North Downs, and there are often spectacular sunsets. I am really looking forward to seeing the view from the Trinity Theatre clock tower when it opens.
Why do you love where you live? Maybe because it’s where I grew up, and was very happy, I feel emotionally connected to the town. I want it to thrive and to evolve in a way that conserves and celebrates the best of the past while introducing the best of the present and future. Tunbridge Wells is historic and beautiful, with so many attractions, green spaces and parks, lots of culture, and interesting and unique businesses. My family and many of my friends are here. In the end, though, it’s the community. I am lucky enough to meet so many amazing people – endlessly interesting, generous with their time and expertise, and committed to making the town a better place for everyone. If I’m away from home, and happen to meet a Tunbridge Wells person, I always have a good feeling that we are going to get on!
I go for a walk in the beautiful countryside, especially around Groombridge, Hartfield and Withyham. Or we go to the coast. I love Rye, especially all the little antique shops and cafes. There’s also the Kino cinema there, the castle, and the gorgeous views out to sea from the citadel. If I ever leave Tunbridge Wells - which is doubtful - I might move there! We also visit Winchelsea Beach. There isn’t much there and it never gets very crowded, but that is why we like it.
In summer it’s anywhere outside! The gardens at the Townhouse or the Mount Edgcumbe or any of the cafes on The Pantiles are great. In winter, I like to huddle up in a pub like the Beau Nash, Fuggles or The Compasses. I have a lot of evening meetings but try to get to as many events as I can. I’m out quite often with my book group so that might be to Trinity Theatre.
Most recently we were there for poet Henry Normal and to see Prima Facie (National Theatre Live). This is also the year that I’m going to be super organised and book Bavarian curling at the ice rink before it sells out!

You may think turning away a customer is not good business but, the difference is, we want our customers for life not just for one sale.

Then shortly after, my partner left after 22 years together. It was an incredibly difficult and painful time in my life, yet I believe it made me stronger. Why should we support local? Quite simply, to preserve Tunbridge Wells and all its character. It’s our independents that provide variety and personality, not row upon row of big chains. Although Stampede also has an online presence, having a shop where you can see and touch products in person is important.
What’s in store at Stampede! going into the autumn? During the second lockdown I had to diversify and decided to train in balloon artistry. To be honest, it’s been the worst three years of my career. The pandemic was hard but there was some government assistance. This year, footfall is reduced, overheads have spiraled, supplier deliveries are sporadic, and the shop was flooded which damaged stock and closed the shop for a week. This is why the TN card is so important to us; it increases our sales whilst passing on savings to TN members for their much-needed loyalty.

I moved here from East London 25 years ago. I was drawn to this beautiful town as it felt very rural in comparison to where I lived. The people were kind and the town offered a variety of restaurants, entertainment, history and architecture. I was pulled to the eclectic mix of independent shops and restaurants, and residents had a real sense of pride in their town too - moving here felt like being part of a special club. The momentous celebration comes as no surprise to the reservoir who marked the very place where the vessel made her comeback in 2012 after being retired for over 70 years. Now back up and running after a pandemic fueled step back, spectators can once again see her engine roar back into life as they celebrate the 85th anniversary of the world water speed record set by Sir Malcolm Campbell in 1937. NEED FOR SPEED Sir Malcolm Campbell started racing cars in 1910 and in 1912 suffered the first of many near-fatal accidents at the famous Brooklands racetrack. His fortune and success were followed by nine triumphant years of victory, setting a new land high speed of 300 mph in 1935 shortly after receiving a knighthood. But his love affair for speed didn’t stop there. After defeating land, the British motorist set sights on a new challenge and very soon after announced his intentions to conquer the world water speed record, to which he broke four times in the Blue Bird hydroplane before passing away on New Year’s Eve in 1948. His son Donald continued his legacy, setting many more land and water speed records as he made history, but on January 4, 1967, Campbell’s life was cut short when he was killed in an attempt to take the water speed record over 300mph. decades of extensive work that was taken over by son Karl upon the death of his father, the dream to getting Bluebird K3 back on the water would soon become a reality.

What has been the biggest challenge you have faced over the last 12 months?
Moving from a remote working at home job role, to a busy, fast paced events role in the hospitality industry has been something I have had to adapt to over the past year. Reminding myself of what it’s like to be in a busy office again has been great, but a shock to the system at the beginning! What gives you the biggest buzz at work? Being part of someone’s event or wedding and helping bring their ideas and thoughts to life is always a great feeling. In particular helping plan a couple’s big day from start to end and seeing how happy they are on the day always gives me a buzz. What attracted you to the industry you work in? I have always wanted to be part of the events industry as I love meeting new people and sharing new experiences. Doing something different every day and being part of a great and supportive team within a busy industry is always what I wanted to be a part of. Planning my own wedding over the past year has also sparked my love of the wedding industry. What attributes do you think are most important to be successful in business? I think you need to be passionate about the industry you work in and be willing to learn and adapt to your surroundings. Working in a collaborative team is also important to help grow and be successful. Describe yourself in four words. Friendly, passionate, reliable and approachable. Whether it’s going the extra mile for clients, ensuring their services stand out from the crowd or helping to create a work environment that’s positive and transparent these three young entrepreneurs are definitely impacting each of their professional landscapes in the varying worlds of law, communications and hospitality. What gives you the biggest buzz at work? Seeing the difference I can make for our clients in real-time. We work with businesses that are innovating in their fields and deserve recognition for the work that they do. One of my clients can now proudly boast a turnover increase of 400% in the two years we have worked with them; another had their new book launch reviewed in The Sunday Times! It’s a pleasure to be a part of their success.

In my role, I work directly with our clients as their go-to person for content and PR, providing strategic advice and knowledge. This includes ensuring they have around-the-clock support and building their confidence that projects and initiatives will become a working reality with a positive impact. It’s been a great experience and has given me the tools and space to hone my own professional skills.
“Seeing the difference I can make for our clients is a big buzz”
What has been the biggest challenge you have faced over the past 12 months?
It’s too simple an answer to say ‘dealing with the ways things have shifted postCovid’! So instead I’ll say it constantly varies - whether it’s organising important launch events, getting hold of the people who matter (and are not always available at their offices) or getting my clients heard in an exponentially growing business market - there’s always a new obstacle to overcome.Wearea small agency — but we’ve quickly grown over the last year with a great selection of new and talented team members. Having more skilled, hands on deck has allowed us to achieve greater results normally expected of a bigger, more established agency, but has also required increasingly creative ways to go about it.
What attracted you to the industry you work in? I have an equal love of writing and learning. I originally trained as a journalist, as it’s a field that constantly brings you into contact with experts and their knowledge of diverse and niche topics. You’re never bored – there’s always something new! Where do you see yourself in five years' time? Continuing to develop and grow my skills, building wider relationships in the industry and helping even more brands flourish as market leaders. What attributes do you think are most important to be successful in business? Patience, determinationhonesty,–and a great marketing team! Describe yourself in four words... Driven, curious, resourceful, cat-bound.
I’ve worked as an Account Manager with Sharp Minds Communications, a PR, Consultancy and Marketing intelligence agency based in Tunbridge Wells, since March 2021. What will inflation mean for my retirement plans?
for
The soaring cost of living in recent months may have you wondering whether your retirement aspirations are still achievable. While it’s only natural to feel anxious about the impact of inflation on your long-term finances, there are several steps you could take to ensure your plans remain on track. A financial adviser is the best person to speak to for advice on your individual circumstances but, in the meantime, these are some of the main considerations. inflation mean my retirement plans.indd

Other income sources to consider include shares, bonds, property income and cash savings accounts, although make sure you keep six months’ worth of essential expenditure in an easy-access account as an emergency fund. A financial adviser will be able to take a holistic look at all your savings and investments and advise on the most efficient way to access them in retirement.

If it seems like you’re on course for a shortfall in your retirement savings, this is the time to consider ways to get your plans back on track.
Phasing or delaying retirement
It may be that a simple budgeting exercise reveals areas where you could cut back on your discretionary spending, enabling you to maintain or even increase how much you’re saving each month. Maintaining your personal pension contributions is especially valuable because you benefit from tax relief at your marginal rate of income tax, up until age 75. However, make sure you only contribute what you can really afford, as pension money is locked away until age 55 (rising to age 57 from April 2028).
You can focus on enjoying life today, safe in the knowledge that you’re doing the right thing with your money.
The value of investments, and any income from them, can fall and you may get back less than you invested. Tax treatment depends on the individual circumstances of each client and may be subject to change in the future. Information is provided only as an example and is not a recommendation to pursue a particular strategy. Information contained in this document is believed to be reliable and accurate, but without further investigation cannot be warranted as to accuracy or completeness.

Consider your tax-free lump sum
Getting back on track
Once you reach age 55, you are entitled to take a 25% tax-free lump sum from defined contribution pensions. But just because you can access this money, it doesn’t mean you necessarily should.
Another option to consider is to delay your retirement by a few years, giving you more time to earn an income and save into your pension.
Find out how inflation could affect you
Withdrawing a large lump sum from your pension could significantly reduce how long your savings last in retirement. Even if you don’t spend it and instead leave it in a cash savings account, there’s a risk that its real value will decline as inflation erodes its purchasing power. Think about whether you really need the money and make sure you seek advice on what is right for you.
In uncertain times, taking some smart advice can help you make informed and rational decisions about your long-term finances. An adviser can help you understand what the cost-of-living crisis really means for you and explain how to make up a shortfall in your savings.
Next steps
Your pension pot will have the opportunity to grow over a longer period, potentially providing a greater income in retirement.
Don’t forget other income sources
Remember that income in retirement doesn’t have to come solely from pensions. First off, there is the state pension, which pays £185.15 per week for those who qualify for the full rate1. Check your state pension record and consider filling in gaps in your National Insurance record to increase your eligibility. Your state pension will provide a guaranteed income for life once you reach state pension age, which is currently 66.
The first step is to understand how inflation could affect your plans for the future. Like many people, you may have found that rising prices mean you have less money to put towards your pension and / or other investments each month. At the same time, inflation could have increased the overall amount you need to have saved up in your pension pots, as higher prices inevitably demand greater retirement Theincome.only way to really understand the impact of inflation on your retirement plans is to speak to a financial adviser with expertise in cashflow modelling. They will be able to calculate the projected value of your pension at retirement and, based on your retirement income needs, show how long your money is likely to last.
ISAs are also a valuable source of retirement income. Although ISAs do not benefit from tax relief on contributions, you can withdraw money whenever you like without paying tax. Saving into ISAs may therefore be a good option if you’re concerned you might need access to the money before age 55. It could also prove more tax efficient to deplete ISAs before pensions in retirement.
If the thought of keeping up the nine-to-five any longer fills you with dread, there are alternative options. Many retirees are now opting for a phased retirement, whereby instead of stopping work abruptly, they gradually reduce their hours by working part-time or on a consultancy basis. If a phased retirement is a viable option for you, then it could be well worth considering. By working part-time or flexibly, you might be able to keep your pension fully invested and draw on other savings and investments to top up your lower income.

They attend Mayfield, the leading Catholic independent day and boarding school for girls. The girls achieved identical results, with an excellent four A*s in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry, alongside a Distinction in AEA Maths. “Not only have they confirmed that they can pass examinations, but more importantly, they know that they are part of an inclusive community providing a lifelong network of supportive friends and peers. need to consider how their extracurricular and sporting talents can be nurtured and developed. Good schools will do this intuitively, providing a supportive learning environment alongside a personalised approach to each child in order to ensure that all students are an integral part of the community. Within this guide, many of our local educational establishments will talk specifically about this…
And remember that when visiting a school it is just as important to get a sense of ‘fit’ as, don’t forget it is individual teachers we remember long after we leave, and very often subjects are chosen because pupils are inspired by those teachers. The most important factor when choosing a school is to make sure that you are matching the school to the needs of your child, rather than the other way round. First and foremost, your child needs to be happy, nurtured and challenged – all future success stems from this. Finally, we are lucky that many of our local schools also have extensive facilities to enhance a child’s education meaning they can provide an unrivalled range of sporting, artistic, musical and dramatic activities. Secondary Schools: There are 17 secondary schools in Tunbridge Wells. 13 are state schools, of which 10 are Ofsted Rating Outstanding. The catchment areas are well defined and much wider for the secondary state and grammar schools, with the emphasis on 11+, known as the ‘Kent Test’.
We can help you navigate your way through the schools and support on where to buy for all your schooling needs. Although it is a path well-trodden, there is a strategy to this… Please call us on 01892 519600 or pop into our Winkworth Tunbridge Wells office at 65 High Street.
Tunbridge Wells and its surroundings provide some of the best schooling in the country, with a strong selection of private, state and grammar schools to choose from. The real estate market in Tunbridge Wells is heavily influenced by the location of educational catchment areas. Landing a property in a sought-after and prestigious catchment road requires plenty of strategizing, pre-planning and a little bit of luck.
The catchment area game
• The top ranked girl’s high schools are Tunbridge Wells Girls’ Grammar School (TWGGS)and Kent College, Pembury.
Primary Schools: Particularly in the case of community primary schools, it is all about location, location, location. Let’s take Claremont Primary School (Ofsted rating ‘Outstanding’). It is located in the centre of Tunbridge Wells and is so popular that, in some years, its catchment area has been as small as 300m to 500m, with nearest-to-thedoor winning those limited places. However, get one child in and siblings can follow, as long as you stay within 2 miles from the school. Houses go for a premium on all the surrounding roads to Claremont, and, although you will be buying at a high price point, you will be in an envious position when it is time to sell. Other thriving areas for families wanting proximity to schools include St John’s, Frant Road, Bishops Down and the premium villages of Langton Green, Speldhurst, Bidborough and Wadhurst. New build areas out of town also have fantastic primary schools, such as in Hollyfields in Hawkenbury and Knights Wood.
Independent schools: There is a strong selection of independent schools through the town. Choosing this route has many advantages with smaller class sizes and longer days, with most providing extracurricular activities after school and on Saturdays.Onegreat primary school choice is Rose Hill Primary School. They take children up to 13 and have great results for the Common Entrance exam paving the way for independent secondary education in first class schools in Kent and Sussex such as Tonbridge, Sevenoaks, Bede’s, Ardingly and Kent College.
• The top ranked boy’s high schools are Tonbridge School, The Judd School, The Skinners’ School, Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Boys.

fter three years of hard work, Benenden Sixth Form students past and present were able to see their completed microlight aircraft take pride of place at the Headcorn Aerodrome this summer. Having spent so much time working on the construction of the aircraft – delayed by countless Covid restrictions – the young engineers, who worked on the joint project with partner school The John Wallis Church of England Academy, were proud to see their finished plane displayed among a whole host of other aircraft. The Sixth Formers – who were joined by three Benenden Seniors who had worked on the aircraft earlier in its development – were delighted to be able to sit in the plane, and to see their names inscribed on its control panel. Reflecting on the lessons learned throughout the project, Six One (Year 12) student Natalie said: “I’ve learnt about how a plane works – the most fundamental thing – but also about the importance of teamwork (even though that sounds really clichéd).
“The biggest challenge initially was in being able to understand how the plane works, it’s really hard to be precise and to get every detail right. Obviously, that’s really important because it’s a plane and you don’t want anything to go wrong!” Her teammate, Six One student Rosie, added: “I really enjoyed seeing how the plane is put together, because we don’t often get the chance to see things before they’re finished and complete. It really put into perspective how much effort goes into these things that are in our day to day lives.” Benenden staff member David Wellman was instrumental in building the light aircraft, he shares his experience: “Two lockdowns and a short period of social distancing prevented our aircraft project from completion for about two years. “This build is a joint effort between Benenden and The John Wallis Church of England Academy, who have worked very hard to a very high standard. Many inspectors have said as much and have praised all the students involved very highly“Thisindeed.yearsaw the engine being installed, both wings built and attached and all the control surfaces fitted and working. We are all very proud of everyone’s efforts and are pleased to be able to say that this time we’ve all built a light aircraft.” The gathering also marked an occasion for the students and staff present to give thanks to everyone involved for their continued dedication and hard work. This engineering project – the second time Benenden has constructed a microlight, following its successful project in 2018 – has been run with the British Microlight Aircraft Association (BMAA) as part of the organisation’s New Horizons scheme. The BMAA funds the project and the school is responsible for building the aircraft in collaboration with John Wallis.

A level pupils still make the grade...
Craig Fleming, the head of sixth form for the Skinners' School in Tunbridge Wells, said on results day: “Today has been an outstanding day of achievement for our students who have come through the last several years of secondary education and for the first time ever, have had to sit public exams. “They’ve proved themselves to be determined, able and have shown a considerable amount of resilience to achieve an outstanding set of results.” Some schools did quantify results however. They included St Gregory’s Catholic School in Tunbridge Wells who said one fifth of its students had achieved A*-A grades at A Level and over half the grades achieved were A*-B. “Nine out of ten students gained A*-C grades and for BTEC qualifications, the overall pass rate is 100 per cent,” a spokesperson said.

Kent County Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, Shellina Prendergast, said: “For many students, this will have been the first time they have sat public exams, having missed out on their GCSE qualifications two years ago.” Grades across the UK have dropped from pandemic highs, but remain above 2019 levels, with girls still outperforming boys and geography pushing English literature out of the top 10 most popular subjects.Theproportion of entries graded A* to E – fell by 1.1 per cent from 99.5 per cent in 2021 to 98.4 per cent this Universityyear.admissions have also fallen on last year, but are the second highest on record, according to Ucas figures. Ninju research showed a huge proportion of parents were concerned about sugar consumption, even with existing deemed ‘healthy’ products, it seems many simply don’t work hard enough.
Ninju’s existence all started in the kitchen at home when Aaron was drinking his daily ginger shot and his 5-year-old son asked to taste it, following which he swiftly spat it out -“it’s too spicy!”. So, what happened when the guys toned down the flavour, threw in some fresh fruit & veggies with a few Ninju powers? Boom! It was a winner and a light bulb moment – fresh, nutritional shots for kids, helping them to consume fresh fruit, more veggies, plus added vitamins and minerals in a quick, easy, and fun way.

This is a tiny snippet of the countless statistics illustrating this crisis, and Tunbridge Wells based Ninju founders, David Blackman & Aaron Rowe, are on an absolute crusade to change it – seeing there’s a clear correlation between obesity in kids and adults: “When you look at these statistics it’s obvious that so much of this problem begins in childhood when we form those crucial associations that ultimately shape us as people.

GCSE SUCCESS
Students in Tunbridge Wells received a strong set of GCSE results proving how hard they worked says Victoria Roberts
“This has certainly been a contributing factor in Benenden’s strong performance this year.
At Beacon Academy in Crowborough, headteacher Anna Robinson singled out five students who achieved grade 8+ (or equivalent) in all of their subjects, including many grade 9s – Abbie Jones and Hannah Robertson with eight 9s each, Theo Hall with seven 9s, Abi Nowicki with six 9s and Annabelle Bentley with five 9s. Mayfield, an independent Catholic girls’ school reported 44 per cent of those taking Further Maths achieved a grade 9, while almost all of the drama students achieved 8 or 9.
In 2021, the proportion of GCSE entries awarded top grades surged to an all-time high after exams were cancelled for the second year in a row due to Covid-19 and pupils were given results determined by their teachers. In England, the traditional A* to G grades have been replaced by 9-1 system, where nine is the highest. A ‘4’ is broadly equivalent to a C grade, and a ‘7’ is broadly equivalent to an TheA.proportion of entries receiving a 4 – considered a pass – dropped from 77.1 per cent in 2021 to 73.2 per cent this year, a fall of 3.9 percentage points, but higher than 67.3 per cent in 2019. Girls continued their lead over boys this year, with 30 per cent of entries achieving a 7, compared with 22.6 per cent for males.
Celebrating
TOP MARKS: (From top, clockwise) Year 11 students at Kent College, St Gregory’s, Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Boys and The Skinners’ School received their GCSE results on August 25th
The gap has closed slightly from last year, when 33.4 per cent of female entries were awarded 7 or above ,compared with 24.4 per cent for males, a lead of 9.0 percentage points.
Every region in England saw a fall in the proportion of pupils getting a 7 or above, although 32.6 per cent of London students achieved that level. In Southeast England, 29.2 per cent of entries were 7 or above, compared to 31.9 per cent in 2021 and 23.5 per cent in 2019. Hannah Knowles, Principal of The Skinners’ Kent Academy, said: “Despite all the challenges the world of the last two years, our Year 11 students have approached their studies with resilience and a determination to make the most of the opportunities while here at the Academy.“Thisyear is very much a ‘transition year’ between 2020 and 2021 (when assessment was done directly by schools and colleges) and 2019 (the last year exams took place),” she stressed. “This means that overall grades will be adjusted to lie between the two [years] Meanwhilenationally.”StGregory’s Catholic School said three-quarters of students achieved five or more ‘standard passes’ – at grade 4 or above.
“During Covid, we were in a position to immediately switch to online learning without students missing a single lesson.
“If only every student in this country had the same access to educational resource to enable them to achieve their potential.”
Over 90 per cent of pupils achieved a standard pass in English, with over three quarters gaining a ‘strong pass’ – of grade 5 or above. In maths, 80 per cent achieved a standard pass and more than half achieved a strong pass. Four fifths achieved the standard pass in English and maths combined, and over half achieved a strong pass in the two core subjects. Samantha Price, headmistress of Benenden School in Cranbrook, announced record results, which included 50 per cent of all grades being Level 9. But she added: “Frankly, however, our pride in these results is tinged with disappointment that not every student in the UK was able to benefit from continuity of education throughout the pandemic.

In his exclusive column for SO, optician Jamie Edney - who runs Edney & Edney with his optometrist wife Ayshah on Monson Road – reveals how to find the perfect frames – and a date for your diary…
So how do we do it? Well, we like to think we understand the importance of celebrating individuality with our frames, so why would we treat our clients any differently? We try to get to know you as a person, as your specs can speak volumes about your personality, and it’s far more important to match your frames to this – not your face shape. We maintain this sense ofbyindividualityneverstockingthesameframe twice - once it’s gone it’s gone! So you won’t see your frame on anyone Soelse.now let’s think about colour. Many of us have a natural affinity to warmer, autumnal colours like tortoise shells, reds and browns or colder colours including pale blue crystals and greys. More people are now embracing the eyewear wardrobe - why not have multiple pairs for different outfits and styles. A classic tortoise shell or black frame is a staple in the eyewear wardrobe and is excellent for day to day wear or with monochrome outfits. Additional pairs with contrasting colours and styles can dramatically change your entire look.Let’s put that into the context of what styles are ‘in’ right now. Thinner, smaller metal call-backs to the 90s are everywhere in pop culture. Although metal frames have historically been seen as the safer, more subtle option, when combined with creative shapes and bold colours, as seen in collections from Ahlem and Theo. Conversely, our infamous ranges make beautifully unique glasses, while the playful use of colour and unconventional shapes provide a sense of eccentricity.
Meanwhile the larger, bolder NOW OR NEVER and MILLE+80 collections combine titanium and acetate with beautifully engineered hinges and other design features. Selecting which Theo frames to keep in stock is one of my greatest buying challenges as it would be so easy to have them all! Which conveniently brings me onto our showcase event on September 10 where we will be joined by Theo and every single one of their irresistible frames.
ince launching six years ago Edney & Edney has been developing quite a reputation in Tunbridge Wells for expert eyecare and eyewear. Tunbridge Wells is experiencing a boom in trendy burger restaurants. Sarah Bond met Richard Oddy of the recently opened Roddy Burger on Camden Road to discover what makes his offerings a cut above the rest ormer Tunbridge Wells commodity broker Richard Oddy, known to everyone as ‘Roddy’, was the first person to spot a gap in Tunbridge Wells’ restaurant market back in 2020 – the lack of a good burger outlet. And when he was made redundant after the pandemic hit, he ended up following his passion for cooking and launched a muchneeded high-quality takeaway burger business in the town, which then led to his first restaurant, Roddy Burger, opening earlier this summer, in May.
“I went into the pandemic without a job and with a mortgage to pay. After six months of writing for a website I decided I didn’t want a city career again, and that I needed something that I really wanted to do,” Richard says. “I’ve always loved a burger and I figured that there were no decent burger bars or burger businesses in Tunbridge Wells. There was a McDonald’s on the industrial estate and a few pubs selling burgers, but that was it.
“I’ve also always loved to cook and always made my own burgers, and so I thought ‘right let’s go for it, let’s take the bull by the horns (so to speak!)’ I used my own delivery app and it all started from there,” he explains. With the orders soon piling up, Richard then needed a kitchen, and with everything still locked down in December 2020, his friend Matthew Sankey was happy to let Richard rent his kitchen at Sankey’s on Mount Ephraim, and business continued to boom with both deliveries and people coming to collect their takeaways.
“Richard Oddy - known to everyone as Roddy - was the first person to spot a gap in the market for a good business”burger
The secret to Richard’s success is the succulent meat used in his burgers, sourced specially from well-loved and happy Welsh dairy herds, and his flair for his own home-made spicy sauces.
“After three months Sankey’s reopened so I looked for another kitchen and ended up renting the kitchen at The Sussex Arms, and when everything started to open up again the business really grew.
So I still do burgers from there and its sister pub The Ragged Trousers as well as from Roddy Burger on Camden Road. And we deliver to other outlets on The Pantiles on Jazz Nights as well.”

“And the beef is then aged from anywhere between 30 and 40 days depending on the cut, and that goes into the mix to give it a depth of flavour, which makes it stand out against all others where the cow hasn’t really had a life,” RichardRoddyexplains.Burgeralso has chicken burgers and wings and great side dishes, such as Beef Brisket Dirty Fries and breaded Mac & Cheese Bites. They offer vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options, too, as well as an amazing range of milkshakes, including Kinder, Crunchie and peanut butter flavours. “People really love the milkshakes, especially in this weather, they have been flying out of the door!” laughs Richard. And his own favourite burger? “Ah, ‘The Gazza’, which is our most popular beef burger. It’s effectively a bacon double cheeseburger with sauce and hidden pickled onions. Or if I’m going chicken, The ‘Seoul Sandwich’, which is a Korean-style chicken thigh in sweet and spicy sauce. It is extremely crispy, with an Asian style slaw and sauce.” But running his own booming business is not without its challenges, especially in the current economic climate with staffing problems in the hospitality industry and rising prices.
Jason Stubbs put the newly opened Roddy Burger menu to the taste test – and was suitably impressed, declaring it a tasty triumph…
“We do six different beef burgers vegetarianwithandveganoptionsavailabletoo”
“I am looking for chefs as we speak, and that isn’t easy these days. I’m full time in the kitchen and full time running the back office as well. So it is difficult, but at the moment, needs must. “Ideally, I would like to do fewer hours in the kitchen and then I can work driving the business forward and looking at other avenues, such as offering pop-up opportunities to other businesses on the days we are closed. The community has supported me so brilliantly in this venture that I would like to give something back,” he says. And costs for people and businesses everywhere are increasing rapidly. “My business model was torn up two weeks after signing the lease on the restaurant because of the situation in Ukraine. Energy prices are triple what they were under my original model and other bills are sky high because the cost of everything has gone through the roof. “For example, the cost of buns has risen by over 50% and cooking oil has risen by 100% this year. My electricity is treble what I modelled, so it’s been incredibly tough, and we’ve done as much as we can to conserve power. “None of these things we could forsee, but I don’t want to raise my menu prices so the margins are exceptionally tight. We do six different beef burgers with prices ranging from £11.50 to £13.50,” heButexplains.withhis distinctive and flavoursome offerings, Richard has built a very loyal and large client base and loves the business, which is booming, so he’s not too worried about the rivals down the road. As well as Roddy Burger and the two Pantiles pubs, Richard also has portable kitchen equipment and caters for outside events such as festivals, sporting occasions, parties and weddings. So it looks like Roddy Burgers is looking forward to as long a life as the dairy cows. “I don’t think people will ever go off burgers!” laughs Richard. www.roddyburger.co.uk
Having always been partial to a burger, I was delighted when SO’s editor asked me to pop along to Roddy Burger, located on Camden Road, to sample their take on this tasty classic. I visited on a warm, sunny afternoon last month, so the large bifolding doors at the front of the restaurant were wide open which was a greatInside, bonus.the space is welcoming, contemporary and relaxed. I grabbed a seat facing the street, and one of the friendly members of staff brought me a menu to peruse. As you’d expect, all of Roddy Burger’s offerings come with a range of different toppings, from the classic ‘Americano’ (£11.50) with Monterrey Jack cheese, pickles and onions to the ‘Français’ (£11.50) which adds blue cheese and garlic mushrooms to the mix. There are also veggie, vegan and chicken options on offer, but I was in the mood for something a little spicy so went for the ‘Mexicano’ (£11.50) which came topped with guacamole and jalapenos. I also ordered (quite ambitiously as it turned out) some dirty fries (£6.95) from a broad range of side dishes on offer. The Roddy Burger drinks menu offers a good selection of craft beers, ciders and wines, as well as soft drinks as milkshakes. As I had to return to the office afterwards, this time a Diet Coke had to suffice forWhileme! waiting for my burger to be freshly prepared I could take in the hustle and bustle of Camden Road along with the sizzle and scent of the open kitchen at the rear of the restaurant where the staff were hard at work. When my burger arrived it didn’t disappoint. It arrived stacked high with freshly made in-house guacamole - which was superb – and sandwiched between a fresh brioche bun. The dirty fries were equally impressive. Generous in portion size, they came topped with a thick layer of melted cheese and were sprinkled with jalapenos and smoked bacon pieces. Now I have to say that this is a side dish to be reckoned with and is probably best shared between two people as it’s very filling - although I did my best to demolish my portion!Theburger itself was a real treat, and the toppings and sauces complemented it well overwhelming.without The taste of the two beef patties was able to shine, and you could tell the burger was put together with good quality ingredients. I also noticed that it held together well without falling apart during eating. As I worked my way through the burger, the dirty fries were a constant distraction, the bite of the jalapenos working really well with the gooeyness of the melted cheese. By the time I’d finished I felt satisfied and full which is pretty much spot on for how a good burger should make you feel.

As a broker, he worked in Madrid for five years, hence his top burger being the Spanish-inspired ‘The Manuel’. “I was put in touch with a fantastic beef supplier in Wales,” he explains about the brilliant beef. “They source all their beef from ex-dairy cows, so because the cows have already had a life in milking their meat has an incredible fat quality throughout. Optegra Eye Health Care is a network of specialist eye hospitals across the UK and internationally and has recently expanded with the launch of Optegra Eye Clinic Maidstone, which officially opened on 15 August 2022. Richard Armitage, NHS Director for Optegra, says: “We have worked closely with the NHS for a decade and since the pandemic this work has really stepped up a gear. “It is well known that many people across the UK face huge waiting lists due to the backlog of patients awaiting treatment, but in fact ophthalmology is the second largest waiting list. “Many people are suffering with cataracts, which will just get worse and impact vision, for far longer than they should. The only treatment is surgery, and we are delighted to be able to bring NHS cataract treatment in this specialist clinic to the people of Kent. “Simply ask your optician or GP to refer you for treatment within 4-6 weeks with our leading surgical teams.” The clinic was formally opened by Cllr Matt Boughton, Leader of Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council and Councillor of Medway Ward, Tonbridge. He said:“Opening Optegra Eye Clinic Maidstone, based in Kings Hill, will help significantly in tackling

The clinic will treat all cataract and lens replacement patients on site, while laser eye surgery patients will have pre- and post-op clinics in Optegra Eye Clinic Maidstone but have actual treatment at Optegra’s flagship hospital in London’s Harley Street district, with travel expenses covered.
“Everything from driving to watching TV and reading. It is all blurry, both in darkness and in light. It’s great to have such investment in our local community and I’m sure they will serve residents across Tonbridge and Malling well.”
The new clinic will initially focus only on NHS cataract surgery – however, in a few months it will extend its treatment offering to also include private cataract surgery (where patients can choose to ‘upgrade’ their lens to also be free of glasses) and also vision correction surgery – from laser eye surgery to lens replacement and implantable contact lenses.

om Carradine is adamant that he doesn’t have a cockney bone in his body. A singular individual, clad in sharp vintage clothes, he’s a man perfectly suited to the niche he inhabits – showman, entertainer, crowd pleaser.Itall started, of course, with biochemistry. “I was born in Coventry, in the Midlands, and grew up there,” said Tom. “To cut a very long story short, I was told by the careers advisors not to be an actor or a musician and that I needed to get a proper job. I’d always been fascinated by London – I’d poured over maps of it as a kid and knew the Tube lines inside out. I ended up doing a biochemistry degree at Imperial College London, that’s when I moved to the city.” It was while at university Tom realised music had a bigger pull for him than test tubes and Bunsen burners. Having always played piano, he became involved with the student operatic society. “I met West End musicians that way and gradually I was being asked to play for things like cabaret concerts, auditions and rehearsals. I finished off my degree as joint honours with business studies and then spent time touring as the keyboard player in shows such as “Blood Brothers” – living out of a suitcase for about eight years. Then I decided to hang up my touring shoes and was playing a bit for Les Miserables in the West End. While I was doing that, I was introduced to the London cabaret scene.” And so the sing-a-long was born -“Carradine’s Cockney Sing-A-Long was lots of different things coming together, my love and fascination for London and old-time music. We were playing at a vintage festival in Bedfordshire – actually based at the airfield where band leader Glenn Miller took off from on his last flight when his plane crashed and he was lost. After the show we ended up in an old Nissen hut, which was a pub, with a battered old piano. Half the keys workingweren’tand it was completely out of tune. So I started to play My Old Man Said Follow The Van and Knees Up Mother Brown – all the songs I knew from childhood and took living pushing around my mobile piano – Kimberley – and driving my van all over the country.”
“I’ve always loved Tunbridge Wells and happened upon a chance meeting with Matt, (the owner of the Green Duck Group) way back in 2016 when we both worked on their Panto, starring Su Pollard. I was Musical Director whilst Matt was Stage Manager and that’s where our comeaskingcallIabegan.friendshipOnedayfewyearslatergotaphonefromMattmetoanddoa gig in his new coffee house and I automatically jumped at the chance.”Tomnow plays at The Green Duck Coffee House & Bar over 16 times a year and it is the only place to catch him in Tunbridge Wells.

Smart developers and architects should be encouraged to incorporate rain water and recycled water based systems into house designs so gardens can be fed off tanked solutions rather than the mains.

I was talking to a friend at the weekend who lives in Stockholm and she was recounting the days in her childhood when it was almost guaranteed they would get plenty of snow throughout the winter. Not so any more. This year we have seen forest fires throughout Europe, and serious flooding in Australia, so something must be happening! Here in the UK having suffered a low water table from a mild winter and an excessively prolonged hot summer, it's not surprising we now have a temporary hosepipe ban.

this September: THINGS TO DO IN THE GARDEN
My son has just returned from Australia and 100% of new gardens created by the landscaping company he was working for have irrigation systems fitted already, or as part of a new landscaping scheme. “It really doesn't need to be complicated, but you should think this through at the design stage and ideally fit it as part of the garden construction”, comments George. “Clients and your staff can be trained to monitor and maintain it, its pretty straightforward once you are familiar with the system. The follow through and maintenance is also important. So in a garden fitted with an irrigation system it could become part of the regular gardeners routine to check the flow rates and also any animal damage to pipework and repair immediately, so you keep the system running at all times.” George is used to installing structure. Are you living in an area where you have a heavy clay strata just below your topsoil? In a situation like this in drought conditions any water fed into the system could dry out very quickly and hinder the growth of plant root structures, or it could suggest you only plant smaller plants with shallower roots. If however your topography is more free draining then it andexploredgardenlongerhelpmoresensiblemaybetoaddmulchtoretainwateretc.Manyofourgreatdesignershavethisconundrumcomeupwithsolutions.BethChattoisfamousfor her research into drought resistant planting and in 2000 published her book “Drought - resistant planting lessons from Beth Chato's gravel garden”Soin Beth's garden she has used gravel as mechanism to aid drainage around plants and protect the soil below from the heat through its reflection of the suns rays. Hunter and Rainbird systems and typically these include popups in lawns, drip lines in beds, leaky pipes around trees, and misters in areas where planting either needs a constant humidity, or where foliar based watering is required. The whole system can be zonalised and watering can be timed so as to focus watering at the correct times of the day and limit any water wastage. So thinking forward to summer 2023 it could be wise to investigate a more water efficient strategy for your garden, by all means contact George or myself and we will try be as helpful as weSocan.the other factor could be what we plant in gardens and how the soil copes with water.

THE LOCATION IS POSTCARD PERFECT
SO short morning commute can really set the tone for the day, I ponder, on the 30-second walk from my hotel room to the beach at Cooks Club Adakoy, Marmaris, Turkey. After a short detour to the hotel bar to get a fresh apple juice, I find a sunbed and commence the task of listening to the waves crash against the rocky shore. Part of the Cook’s Club franchise, Adakoy is without a doubt the lushest resort I have ever stepped foot in. And, although prices have been steadily rising, favourable exchange rates still make Turkey far more affordable than Euro favourites like Portugal and Spain. Here’s the lowdown on the luxe Turkish resort with all the trimmings, at a lower price tag.

EVENINGS CAN BE LIVELY RELAXEDOR
Every day, the hotel hosts sunrise and sunset yoga sessions on a pier overlooking the water and the nearby Bedir Island. The ultra-modern, white-walled spa offers a range of services. Although the idea of a body scrub in the hammam sounds intriguing, I opt for a Turkish massage, which costs €35 (£29.50) for 30 minutes. In what feels a little bit like a consensual beating, I have the knots forcefully removed from my back. But even though I do feel much better afterwards, I conclude a Turkish massage is not for the faint hearted.
DAYS CAN BE ACTION PACKED
At around 7am the following day, I join a group led by our hotel host, and begin a somewhat gruelling trek up to Nimara Cave, slightly hampered by my overindulgence of the all-inclusive gin and tonics at the beach disco the night before. Starting only minutes from the hotel entrance, we follow the path up to a high point of the national park, where we are greeted by incredible views of the ocean, Marmaris and beyond. On the way down, we visit the cave; a must-see huge expansive echo chamber accessed via a rickety wooden staircase. I also discover the joys of canoeing, which, despite being a first timer, is surprisingly enjoyable and costs only £7 an hour for a single canoe, and £10 for a double. We paddle over to Bedir, and jump in for a quick dip, before completing a lap around the island in our canoes.

The hotel offers a full itinerary of activities for water taxi ride (£3.90 each way). The taxis run throughout the day, from 10am-midnight, so guests can spend as much or as little time away from the resort as they like.Once in the old town, I am greeted by hundreds of shops, all serviced by somewhat keen Turkish venders, who have a wide array of designer (and not-so designer) brands. From Marmaris marina, where the water taxi drops us, there is also the option to hop on a 40-minute boat journey to Greek island Rhodes, close by. Central to the Huracan STO is FACTS AT A GLANCE MODEL: HuracanLamborghiniSTO PRICE: £260,012 MODEL TESTED:AS Huracan STO ENGINE: 5.2-litre aspiratednaturally-V10 POWER: 631bhp TORQUE: 565Nm 0-60MPH: 2.8 seconds TOP SPEED: 193mph ECONOMY: 20.3mpg EMISSIONS: 331g/km
The STO feels like the real deal, track-focusedbringingabilitywhichmeansitcangoasquicklyaspossible
WHAT’S UNDER THE BONNET?
WHAT IS IT? Lamborghini isn’t known for its shy and retiring nature. The brand’s created some of the most outlandish and awe-inspiring supercars around over the years, destined to be poster stars for car enthusiasts around the world – and the Huracan STO aims to be next in that star-studded lineup, bringing both huge thrills and looks that will turn heads wherever it goes.Butdynamically, can this latest Huracan edition stand up to the test? And how does it fare with the UK’s roads?
82 | September 2022 | SO magazine Motors
The STO is a hardened, more focused version of Lamborghini’s Huracan supercar. Jack Evans finds out what it’s like to live with in the UK its 5.2-litre naturally-aspirated V10 engine. At 631bhp, its output is mightily impressive, while its accompanying torque figure of 565Nm isn’t to be sniffed at. Flatout, you’ll get from zero to 60mph in just under three seconds before hitting a top speed of 193mph. Serious, it definitely is. Power goes to the rear wheels alone via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic too.Thankfully, Lamborghini has also seriously upgraded the braking system, equipping Brembo’s CCM-R set which takes learnings from F1 and brings them to the road. Though it can be easy to be swept up by the V10 engine barking away behind you, the brakes are one of the stars of the show with the Huracan STO.
WHAT’S NEW?
Slot yourself into the STO’s deep bucket seats and you’re faced with a variety of buttons all located on the steering wheel. A lack of stalks means aspects such as the fullbeam and wipers are all accessed via toggle switches on the wheel itself – and that, initially, is what you get used to. But all of this quickly slips into the background once you start to gather a bit of pace with the STO. It’s an doesrivals,manymuchsurprisinglyTheimmersiveencompassing,all-experience.steeringislight–lighterthanwithoftheSTO’sinfact–butitmeanthatthewholecarfeelsagileandsharp.Thebodycontrolisexceptional,withnexttonosidewaysmotionwhenheadingthroughcorners.Asmentioned,thebrakes are a real highlight; they’re superbly progressive and easy to manage but deal out a huge amount of stopping power as and when you need it. The engine sounds relatively muted at lower revs, but increase that throttle pedal travel and the V10 soars into life with an addictive howl. There’s also next to no rear visibility, with the engine cover and huge rear wing meaning you’ve got to rely on the mirrors instead.
WHAT’S IT LIKE TO DRIVE?
The Huracan STO – which stands for Super Trofeo Omologata, or homologation – is essentially designed to be a road-going version of Lamborghini’s Huracan Super Trofeo Evo race car. Acting as the most hardcore car in the firm’s Huracan line-up, the STO is lighter than the standard car –mainly thanks to the removal of its all-wheel-drive system – while a wide track, stiffer bushings and more downforce ensure that this is a far more serious beast. The cabin has been stripped out too, though thankfully some creature comforts, such as air-conditioning and Apple CarPlay, remain.
WHAT’S IT LIKE INSIDE?
As mentioned, Lamborghini has stripped out a huge amount of weight from the Huracan’s cabin in its STO transformation, but that doesn’t mean it lacks that ‘special’ feeling – quite the opposite. There are vast swathes of Alcantara used throughout, while the fighter plane-style toggle switches and huge red starter button do mirror the drama of the exterior design. The bucket seats have a decent amount of adjustability to them, while the driving position, in general, is excellent. It’s also best that you pack light if you’re travelling in the STO; there’s barely any extra space in the cabin, while the front clamshell – which is opened via a special key – opens to reveal only enough room for a single helmet.
VERDICT It’s common for car manufacturers to roll out the ‘race car for the road’ saying whenever they release a new lightweight model – and not all live up to this claim. However, the STO genuinely feels like the real deal, bringing that track-focused ability that you’d expect from something that has been astoThoughyes,Uncompromising,rewardingpossible.aroundhonedunashamedlytogoasquicklyacircuitasButit’sstillahugelyroadcar.butrewarding.it’seasyjudgethiscarsimplyahugewing head-turner, the STO is far more than just that. This is a Lamborghini which backs up its look with as dynamic and involving driving experience as you’re likely to get.
