Battle of budget supermarkets it s ’ t a h W hots up with new stores planned worth? By Richard Williams
BUDGET supermarket giant Aldi wants to open three new stores in the area in Tunbridge Wells, Paddock Wood and Cranbrook. The German retailer already has a store at Great Lodge Retail Park in the unit formerly occupied by Toys R Us on Longfield Road. It was opened in 2019 and was the first budget store in Tunbridge Wells followed by rival Lidl on Linden Park Road this year. In total Aldi has earmarked 16 locations in Kent for new branches.

Supermarket rivals Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Asda all have large stores in the town and there are several ‘express’ branches. Aldi’s expansion is part of its ingoing £1billion plans where it aims ‘to open a new store in the UK every week’, boosting its existing 900 branches to around 1,000. Other locations in the county the retailer is looking at include Ashford, Broadstairs, Canterbury, Chatham, Dover, Ebbsfleet, Folkestone, Gillingham, Gravesend, Maidstone, Margate, Rochester and Tenterden.
No opening dates have been announced but Aldi says each site should be around 1.5 acres and able to accommodate a 20,000 sq ft store with around 100 parking spaces.
Demand Ciaran Aldridge, National Property Director at the supermarket giant, said: “We have been investing in Britain for more than 30 years now, but we know that there are still areas that either do not have an Aldi at all, or that need another store to meet customer demand.
“Shoppers are increasingly looking to get unbeatable prices on their weekly shop without compromising on quality. That’s why, more so than ever, we’re keen to explore all opportunities to open new stores across the country.” Lidl has also been expanding across the UK and is investing around £1.3billion in new sites. The German budget rival hopes to have around 1,000 stores in operation over the next few years. It struck a deal with Homebase in Tunbridge Wells and has been operating in one half of their Broadwater Lane site since February.
Hybrid working sees AXA sell two town centre offices By Robert Forrester THE largest local employer, AXA Health, insists it’s still committed to working in Tunbridge Wells even though it’s closing two offices and pulling 1,000 staff out of the town centre. Those staff are normally based at Phillips House and Eynsham House in Crescent Road which are now being sold. Since Covid-19 struck, the firm’s 2,000
staff have been taking a hybrid approach to work, with a mix of home and office working. AXA says it is building on what they have learned during the pandemic, during which they operated successfully by providing its workforce with resources and support to work effectively from home, and are making the change permanent. In a briefing to staff last week, the firm’s
CEO, Tracey Garrad said that by adopting a blend of home and office working permanently, it reduces the need for all of its Tunbridge Wells sites. She said even with the same number of employees, they will need fewer people to be in the office at any one time, paving the way to sell some offices.
