It's not often that a college student starts building skis in a small garage, and produces anything worthwhile. It's even less common that said student sits back after building a couple garage sticks and thinks, “wow, this is really going places.” Building skis, especially good skis, is a difficult and complex task. A task complicated further when one is learning how to operate power tools for the first time, designing and building the equipment, and simultaneously learning and developing the ski building process.

The idea to press a small number of skis for myself and a handful of friends was almost two years old by the time the first pair was finally finished. When measured against the standards we set for our skis today, it would be generous to describe them as "rough." Nonetheless, they skied well, and didn’t fall apart. It took just a single pair of skis to validate those two years of hard work, sleepless nights, and seemingly endless setbacks. I was hooked.

The 2013/2014 season will be ON3P’s fifth year of production. We’ve grown - a lot - from a 200 sq. ft. garage to an 8,400 sq. ft. factory. We’ve had lots of highs and lots of lows. We've seen ON3P develop more than we ever thought possible. Nevertheless, ON3P’s bottom line hasn't changed since that first pair was pulled from the press: build the best skis possible, period.

Today, ON3P is staffed by a small crew of skiers. None of us were business majors. We're not simply a marketing team for foreign goods, and we don't outsource production — because we believe that in order to call it your product, you have to build it. Here, we are proud to be able to rightfully call ourselves ski builders.

No one likes moving... especially when it involves relocating an entire ski factory. As is often the case, though, change is good. Gone are the days of having to stop work on one machine to allow someone the ability to use another. Never again will we have to share production equipment or breakdown and modify a workstation to accommodate a different manufacturing process. It took a lot of time and effort to build a our ski factory from scratch, but ON3P’s new 8,400 square foot facility in northeast Portland ensures we now have the space to increase our production capability and capacity. We can now meet demand over the foreseeable future while maintaining our production process in-house, under our own control and quality demands, guaranteeing that the skis leaving our door meet the high standards we set for every pair of ON3P. Change is good.

At ON3P, we love rocker. We’ve had it on every model, regardless of purpose, since our second year of existence. However, on certain occasions there simply isn’t a substitute for camber. After several years of customer requests and feedback from our team looking for a ski more at home on the biggest of park features, we are proud to introduce the Prester.

Fully cambered, 86mm underfoot, with a directional sidecut and our standard 2.5mm x 2.5mm extra wide edges, the Prester is designed to meet the needs of the most aggressive park skiers out there. The bamboo core, along with top & bottom full-length carbon stringers, ensure the ski maintains the damp but responsive characteristics found in every ON3P — but in package that can be enjoyed by those whose skiing demands more substantial landing gear.

For skiers not interested in the standard industry approach to a park ski, we are happy to bring back the Filthy Rich. Featuring a symmetrical, elliptical sidecut and rocker profile, and medium flexing core profile, the Filthy Rich remains stable and aggressive when carving into features at speed, yet forgiving and easy to butter for those looking for high levels of responsiveness and playfulness when sessioning boxes and rails. Our standard 2.5mm x 2.5mm edges enhance the longevity of the ski after days of hot lapping the park, while the rocker profile allows the Filthy Rich to be skied comfortably around the mountain, even on soft snow days.

The Jeffrey was created in response to customer and team requests for a do-it-all freeride ski. It has quickly become our benchmark for a ski that turns the mountain into a playground. In its third year, we've altered the tip taper for better float and control, while keeping the swing weight down.

With elliptical sidecut, a wider waist and an elliptical rocker profile, the Jeffrey provides excellent crud busting ability while maintaining stability on harder snow. There's no other design that can so accurately be described as a freeride fail-safe on those days that you're not quite sure which of your quiver to put on the roof rack.

Since our inception, no ski has been designed, prototyped and produced more specifically for Cascadia skiing than the Caylor. Featuring a long, gradual rocker profile, a medium-stiff flex, and 120mm waist, the Caylor has long been one of ON3P’s best options for floating through pillows, bashing crud, and stomping cliffs on a deep days. Even so, many of us are guilty of taking the Caylors out on harder, non-pow days, made possibly by its stability and performance on hardpack and uncanny ability to make even the smallest amount of soft snow that much more fun.

Every once in awhile, we throw caution to the wind and design a ski with the understanding that it won't have to answer to anyone. Our ultimate test bed has been the Pillowfight, our 135mm underfoot, deep powder machine. Since its inception on a bar napkin many years ago, the Pillowfight has become the ski that truly embodies what most of us love to ski the most – powder.

We all know that we are not destined to be spending our seasons ripping Alaskan peaks, so ensuring that our ultimate powder tool can get us around the mountain has been important. Initially, this involved designing ~90cm of running length underfoot, capable of getting us to and from any spot on the mountain.

For the 2012 / 2013 season, we decided to push the design a bit further. We developed a base design that is convex edge to edge across the ski, that maintained the same amount of flat sidecut and effective edge underfoot, ensuring the skis would still perform on groomers while increasing the skis ability to plane and smear in soft snow.

When thinking about what we wanted to accomplish for 2013 / 2014, we knew we wanted to take the convex base concept a step further. This led to a complete overhaul of the existing Pillowfight. The sidecut was redesigned to feature 120cm of effective edge, utilizing our Reverse Elliptical Sidecut (RES). Once the sidecut was finalized, developed a new, asymmetrical base convexity profile that allows the ski’s inside edge to remain flat and support the weight of a skier’s downhill ski during a turn, while allowing maximum angulations of the outside edges of the ski to enhance the skis’s maneuverability and playfulness in soft snow.

This year, the Cease and Desist gains a lot from our revised Reverse Elliptical Sidecut (RES) design. With increased effective edge, the Cease and Desist will be more stable than previous models, with enhanced edge grip. The layup of the Cease and Desist will also change; with full width top and bottom carbon stringers, the weight of the ski will be dramatically reduced, without sacrificing stability or stiffness.

Occasionally, everything about a design just seems to fall into place, as has been the case with our best selling ski and the pinnacle of our efforts to create the ultimate directional soft snow ski. Featuring Reverse Elliptical Sidecut (RES), elliptical tip & tail rocker with slight camber underfoot, as well as tip & tail taper, the Billy Goat has quickly become the go-to ski for many of us at ON3P any time the snow is soft (and often when it is not). RES, which describes a ski which is completely reverse and elliptical sidecut from boot center on towards the tips, ensures that the Billy Goat will remain highly capable in any sort of soft snow by preventing the skis from experiencing hookiness of traditional sidecut. RES also provides the skis with a long effective edge and specially oriented contact zone in the tip, which results in a highly capable soft-snow ski that can also rip groomers and hard snow without the loss of edge grip and performance experienced in many hybrid or reverse sidecut skis.

After approaching perfection this season, the Wrenegade returns for 13 / 14 largely unchanged. Its gradual tail rocker allows for maneuverability in soft snow and trees, while its tip shape provides excellent float and stability in variable snow. This ski is for those who enjoy nothing less than bombing down the mountain as fast as possible. With its larger turning radius and stiff flex, the Wrenegade demands a strong skier who has the ability to ski them the right way.

The Tychoon is an everyday ski for those wanting superior performance on groomers, bumps, and other hard snow conditions. However, the Tychoon isn't to be left out of the fun on powder days. Featuring a slightly tapered tip and elliptical rocker profile, the Tychoon is capable of tearing up untracked in the morning, pounding bumps for a couple hours, and railing groomers all afternoon. Bamboo Cores

Tri-Axial Fiberglass

The heart of every pair of ON3P skis is the vertically laminated, 100% bamboo core. Bamboo provides a responsive, yet damp characteristic to our skis that we have grown to love. Our core shape gives the ski strength where it needs it, better resisting bending and breaking. Bamboo is also a quick growing, environmentally-friendly grass.

19oz or 22oz Tri-axial Fiberglass provides torsional stiffness, ensuring edge hold and power transfer.

Unidirectional Carbon Stringer

VDS (Vibration Dampening Strips)

Each ski incorporates unidirectional carbon around the core, adding pop, stiffness, and dampness without any significant increase in weight.

VDS rubber is applied to the edges & sidewalls, acting as a shear layer that provides improved bonding strength and vibration dampening.

1.8mm 4001 Durasurf Sintered Base

UHMW Sidewalls and Tip Spacers

Our Durasurf 4001 base material provides our skis with better glide and protection from damage compared to other sintered and extruded base material, and is 38% thicker than the industry standard.

UHMW (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) is an incredibly strong material, has a higher abrasion resistance than steel, and resists cracking (unlike ABS).

2.5mm x 2.5mm Extra Thick Edges

Extra Wide Binding Mat

We use a 3/4 wrap for our 2.5mm x 2.5mm Rockwell 48 steel edges. The 3/4 wrap allows the tips and tails of the skis to flex, decreasing the risk of delamination.

An additional layer of fiberglass mat provides increased screw retention and prevents pullouts. To ensure proper coverage for all types of hole patterns, we run our binding close to full width on every ski we make.

Tour Layup: A optional, redesigned, thinner core profile supported with additional layers of full-width carbon fiber results in light weight, tour-oriented ski.

Elliptical Rocker Profile The rocker profile and tip shape are combined into one progressively changing elliptical arc, which allows the tips to plane faster in powder, deflect less in variable snow, and helps the effective edge running within the rocker length to engage in a more natural, effortless way.

Elliptical Sidecut The sidecut consists of an elliptical arc that begins at boot center and gets progressively smaller as it extends toward the tip and tail of the ski, resulting in a ski that carves harder the more it is put on edge, yet remains stable when it is skied flat.

Bi-Radius Sidecut The sidecut consists of a smaller turn radius in the tip that works that in conjunction with a larger turn radius in the tail, creating a directional ski that is stable going straight, but will easily carve once the turn is initiated and the ski is on edge.

Reverse Elliptical Sidecut, or "RES", can be explained best by first discussing the shape of the ski in front of and behind boot center, and then discussing how the two parts of the ski work together.

Two separate sidecut profiles begin at boot center and extend towards the ends of the ski.

From boot center towards the tail of the ski, a traditional sidecut design with a large turning radius offers the benefits of a traditional pintail design. The large radius is slow to engage, allowing the skier to easily change direction and dump speed, and helps the tail sink in soft snow, enhancing the ski tip’s ability to float.

From boot center towards the nose of the skis, the sidecut design features a large, convex, elliptical arc that runs to the tip taper.

The elliptical nature of the arc allows for a smooth transition between the different tip and tail sidecut. The utilization of this more gradual section of the elliptical arc allows for the section of the ski that bears the most weight — directly underfoot — to be very straight. Soft snow, crud, and other snow conditions that are often able to manipulate the sidecut of traditional skis have very little affect on skis featuring RES , as there almost no sidecut shape to the ski for the snow to engage and deflect.

It is no secret that skis featuring reverse sidecut designs rip in soft snow and deep powder. They float well and are often more maneuverable than other large powder skis. Limitations are reached when a reverse sidecut ski encounters hardpack or groomed runs.

When an RES ski is angulated and engages in a turn on hardpack or groomers, the nature of the elliptical arc and its orientation relative to the snow surface allows for almost the entire edge to engage and maintain a solid edge grip through the turn, much like any "traditional" ski shape. Furthermore, the reverse elliptical arc allows the tips to create a well defined contact zone with the snow, which results in an excellent edge hold at the ends of the effective edge throughout any radius turn. As the tip bites into the snow, the traditional sidecut in the tail functions just as it would in any other ski; the sidecut allows the ski to flex and engage the edge as a section of an arc to produce a carved turn. These two zones work together to create an arc that can carve and hold an edge as well as any ski with a more traditional sidecut design.

RES combines the best of both worlds — skis with our RES design have all the advantages of increased float, maneuverability, and shredability exhibited by many of the completely reverse sidecut skis on the market, but does so without sacrificing edge hold, stability, and hardpack performance, creating a ski that is truly ready to take you wherever you want to go.
